Streszczenie:
Abstract From the most ancient times, the astrological beliefs have played an important role in human history, thinking, world-views, language and other elements of social culture. The practice of relating the movement of celestial bodies to events in financial markets is relatively newer but despite the inconsistency between financial astrology and standard economic or financial theory, it seems to be largely spread among capital market traders. This paper evaluates one of the astrological effects on the capital market, more precisely the Mercury retrograde effect on US capital market. Despite the fact that it is just an optical illusion the astrological tradition says that Mercury retrograde periods are characterized by confusion and miscommunications. The trades could be less effective, the individuals more prone to make mistakes so there is a long-held belief that it is better to avoid set plans during Mercury retrograde, signing contracts, starting new ventures or open new stock market positions. The main findings of this study are lower return’s volatilities in the Mercury retrograde periods, inconsistent with the astrologic theories assumptions but consistent with the idea that trader’s beliefs in Mercury retrograde effect could change the market volatility exactly in the opposite sense than the predicted one.

Streszczenie:
Aims. Asteroids in mean motion resonances (MMRs) with planets are common in the solar system. In recent years, increasingly more retrograde asteroids are discovered, several of which are identified to be in resonances with planets. We here systematically present the retrograde resonant configurations where all the asteroids are trapped with any of the eight planets and evaluate their resonant condition. We also discuss a possible production mechanism of retrograde centaurs and dynamical lifetimes of all the retrograde asteroids. Methods. We numerically integrated a swarm of clones (ten clones for each object) of all the retrograde asteroids (condition code U < 7) from −10 000 to 100 000 yr, using the MERCURY package in the model of solar system. We considered all of the p/−q resonances with eight planets where the positive integers p and q were both smaller than 16. In total, 143 retrograde resonant configurations were taken into consideration. The integration time was further extended to analyze their dynamical lifetimes and evolutions. Results. We present all the meaningful retrograde resonant configurations where p and q are both smaller than 16 are presented. Thirty-eight asteroids are found to be trapped in 50 retrograde mean motion resonances (RMMRs) with planets. Our results confirm that RMMRs with giant planets are common in retrograde asteroids. Of these, 15 asteroids are currently in retrograde resonances with planets, and 30 asteroids will be captured in 35 retrograde resonant configurations. Some particular resonant configurations such as polar resonances and co-orbital resonances are also identified. For example, Centaur 2005 TJ50 may be the first potential candidate to be currently in polar retrograde co-orbital resonance with Saturn. Moreover, 2016 FH13 is likely the first identified asteroid that will be captured in polar retrograde resonance with Uranus. Our results provide many candidates for the research of retrograde resonant dynamics and resonance capture. Dynamical lifetimes of retrograde asteroids are investigated by long-term integrations, and only ten objects survived longer than 10 Myr. We confirmed that the near-polar trans-Neptunian objects 2011 KT19 and 2008 KV42 have the longest dynamical lifetimes of the discovered retrograde asteroids. In our long-term simulations, the orbits of 12 centaurs can flip from retrograde to prograde state and back again. This flipping mechanism might be a possible explanation of the origins of retrograde centaurs. Generally, our results are also helpful for understanding the dynamical evolutions of small bodies in the solar system.

Streszczenie:
Renal kallikrein is localized in the connecting tubule cells and secreted into the tubular fluid at late distal nephron segments. The present experiments were performed to further test the hypothesis that renal kallikrein reduces bicarbonate secretion of cortical collecting duct (CCD). The effect of orthograde injections of pig pancreatic kallikrein (1 or 3 μg/ml) into the renal tubular system was investigated. Urine fractions (Fr) were collected after a 2-min stop flow. Changes in the urine fraction with respect to those in free-flow urine samples (Ff) were related to the respective polyfructosan (Inutest) ratio. Renal kallikrein activity (Fr:Ff kallikrein/Fr:Ff polyfructosan) increased significantly in the first two urine fractions collected after glandular kallikrein administration (kallikrein, 1 μg/ml, P < 0.05; kallikrein, 3 μg/ml, P < 0.01).[Formula: see text] secretion of collecting ducts was significantly reduced dose dependently by orthograde and also reduced by retrograde pig pancreatic kallikrein administration. Release of kinins into the fractions was not affected by the retrograde kallikrein injection, even though the kallikrein activity increased considerably (2.26 ± 0.2 vs. 1.55 ± 0.2, P < 0.05). Adequacy of retrograde injections for delivering substances to the CCD was demonstrated by injecting colloidal mercury and detecting the appearance of this mercury in the renal cortex by transmission electron microscopy. The integrity of the renal tissue after a retrograde ureteral injection was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. These results confirm and extend previous data (M. Marin-Grez and P. Vallés. Renal Physiol. Biochem. 17: 301–306, 1994; and M. Marin-Grez, P. Vallés, and P. Odigie. J. Physiol. 488: 163–170, 1995) showing that renal kallikrein reduces bicarbonate secretion at the CCD, probably by inhibiting [Formula: see text]transported by a mechanism unrelated to its kininogenase activity. Support for this assessment was obtained in experiments testing the effect of kallikrein on the luminal bicarbonate secretion of a subpopulation of Madin-Darby canine kidney cells capable of extruding the anion. Kallikrein inhibited[Formula: see text]/Cl−exchange, and the degree of inhibition was dose dependent. This inhibition occurred in the absence of kininogen in the bathing solution.

During a 7-year period, 2382 cases of battery ingestion were reported to a national registry. Button cells were ingested by 2320 of these patients; 62 patients ingested cylindrical cells. These cases are analyzed to reassess current therapeutic recommendations, hypotheses about battery-induced injury, and strategies for prevention and intervention. Hearing aids were the most common intended use of ingested cells (952 cases, 44.6%); and in 312 (32.8%) of these cases, the battery actually was removed by a child from the child's own aid. Overall, 9.9% of patients were symptomatic. Two children experienced severe esophageal injury following the ingestion of large diameter cells and required repeated dilatation. In this series and in prior reports, most batteries which lodged in the esophagus and caused esophageal injury were large diameter (20 to 23 mm). However, neither battery diameter nor symptom occurrence could be used to detect all patients with esophageal battery position. Outcome was not affected by battery discharge state, but was influenced by chemical system. Lithium cells, with their larger diameters and greater voltage, were associated disproportionately with adverse effects. Mercuric oxide cells were substantially more likely to fragment, compared with other chemical systems. No clinical evidence of mercury toxicity occurred in this series, although one patient demonstrated minimal elevation of blood mercury levels. In this series and 10 prior reports, all patients with elevated blood mercury levels had ingested batteries which fragmented and showed evidence of radio-opaque droplets in the gut. Special monitoring may be advisable for individuals who have ingested 15.6-mm-diameter mercuric oxide cells. Ipecac was administered in 37 cases of button cell ingestion, causing battery expulsion in only one patient. Retrograde battery movement from the stomach to the esophagus necessitating emergent endoscopic retrieval occurred as a complication of ipecac administration in another patient. The use of endoscopic and surgical intervention declined more than fivefold during the study period. Endoscopic retrieval success was a function of battery location, with batteries in the esophagus more readily retrieved than those in more distal gastrointestinal locations (90.0% vs 46.7%, respectively). A current management protocol is presented advocating a noninvasive approach for most cases of button cell ingestion where an esophageal position is excluded. Manufacturers are urged to provide more securely fastened, child-resistant battery compartments on hearing aids as well as other battery-powered products in household use.

In this paper, the DBR all-visible mercury-free high-temperature and high-pressure multifunctional formation fluid PVT analyzer developed and produced by Schlumberger company is used to conduct an experimental study on phase behavior characteristics of one offshore high CO2 condensate gas wells. The experiments include two-phase flash experiment, constant composition expansion experiment (CCE experiment), and constant volume depletion experiment (CVD experiment). Experimental results show that the higher the CO2 content in the condensate gas system, the higher the gas-oil ratio of condensate gas, the greater the density of condensate oil, the higher the dew point pressure of condensate gas, the greater the relative volume of condensate gas, the smaller the amount of retrograde condensate oil. And the higher the CO2 content in the condensate gas system, the phase diagram is shifted to the left and up, the critical point of the phase diagram is shifted to the lower left, the smaller the area of the two-phase envelope, the lighter the condensate gas system, the condensate oil recovery is higher. The above experimental results revealed that CO2 is well soluble with condensate gas, the expansion capacity of the condensate gas system was slightly enhanced, and because CO2 has a good extraction capacity, the light components of condensate gas were constantly extracted, the retrograde condensate rate of condensate oil decreases, and the maximum retrograde condensate volume also decreased. However, the condensate oil was produced along with the natural gas, and the higher the CO2 content, the stronger the extraction, the more condensate oil was produced. It is mainly because CO2 has the strong gasification and extraction capacity, on the one hand, the retrograde condensation of condensate gas was inhibited, and on the other hand, reverse evaporation of condensate oil was enhanced. The above experimental results indicate the law of the effect of CO2 on the phase behavior characteristics of condensate gas reservoirs, providing theoretical basis and guidance for the efficient development of condensate gas reservoirs at sea.

The fate of inspired mercury vapour (Hg0) is critical in the central nervous system (CNS) where it can circumvent the blood—brain barrier (BBB) at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) and accumulate indefinitely in motor neurons by retrograde transport. The detoxification of systemic Hg0 by lung and liver requires investigation. We exposed 129/Sv wild-type (Wt) and 129/Sv MT-I, II double knockout (KO) mice to 500 μg Hg0/m3 for 4 hours to investigate the expression of MT in the lung, liver, and spinal cord following Hg0 exposure using unexposed groups as controls. There were congestive changes in liver and lung of both Wt and MT-KO groups of Hg0-treated mice; these changes appeared more pronounced in the MT-KO group. Motor neurons in the spinal cord did not show any pathological changes. Based on expression of MT, liver appears to have a major role in trapping and stabilising mercury. In the spinal cord, MT was expressed in all white matter astrocytes and in some grey matter astrocytes. Notably, motor neurons did not express MT, and the presence of MT could not be demonstrated in the axons of the ventral root. The absence of MT expression in motor neurons and their axons suggests the dependence of the motor system on the detoxifying capacity of liver MTs.

In open-chest anesthetized dogs we measured phasic coronary blood velocity in an epicardial artery (left anterior descending), a small epicardial artery (within 0.5 cm before penetration into the myocardium), and an intramyocardial artery (septal) during changes in perfusion pressure and extravascular pressure. Circumflex artery diameter was also measured during pressure changes to directly assess vascular compliance. At low and normal arterial pressures (less than 125/86 mmHg) and during aortic insufficiency, the phasic character of blood flow velocity in the large epicardial arteries was markedly different from that in the small epicardial and septal arteries: there was retrograde systolic blood flow velocity in the septal artery and small epicardial artery, whereas antegrade blood flow velocity persisted in the left anterior descending artery. At pressures greater than 150/106 mmHg, the differences in the phasic character of blood flow velocity in the left anterior descending artery from that in the septal artery and small epicardial artery were small and decreased as aortic pressure increased. At pressures greater than 125 mmHg, the cross-sectional area change per millimeter of mercury was approximately three times less than at pressures between 30 and 75 mmHg, indicating decreased coronary compliance at the higher pressures. Increasing extravascular pressure in the septum (right ventricular hypertension) greatly increased retrograde systolic blood flow velocity in the septal artery (P less than 0.05). However, right ventricular bypass (0 right ventricular pressure) did not alter the phasic nature of blood flow velocity in the septal artery. From these results we confirmed that epicardial capacitance is inversely related to distending pressures.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Streszczenie:
Abstract. Estimating the porosity of slates is of great interest for the industries dealing with sub-surface areas such as CO2 sequestration, nuclear waste disposal and shale gas but also for engineering purposes in terms of mechanical stability for underground or surface constructions. In this study, we aim at understanding estimates of the porosity of slates from the Infrahelvetic flysch units (IFUs) in the Glarus Alps (eastern Switzerland). Surface and sub-surface samples were collected along a temperature gradient from 200 to 320 °C and therefore give the opportunity to link pore types along this temperature and deformation path. In addition, we indicate which porosity is the effect of surface processes and indicate the contribution of artificially induced porosity. The developed workflow consists of a combination of bulk rock measurements including helium pycnometry (He pycnometry) and mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) with image analysis. Image analysis was performed with high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on broad ion beam (BIB) prepared cross sections (BIB-SEM). Different vein generations provide evidence of porosity formation at depth, as they present paleo-porosity. Towards peak metamorphic conditions (prograde path), porosity reduces to < 1 vol%, indicated by matrix porosity detected by BIB-SEM. During exhumation (retrograde path) porosity increases due to the formation of microfractures interpreted as the effect of unloading (open fractures). At the surface, porosity is further increased due to the formation of macro-fractures (fracture apertures up to 1 mm), which are interpreted as being either due to the effect of weathering processes such as freeze and thaw cycles or artificially induced by sample preparation. Additionally, porosity and pore morphology are strongly dependent on mineralogy, sample homogeneity and strain, which change dynamically in time and space.

Streszczenie:
Throughout history, observations of the motions of objects in the Universe have provided the foundation for various cosmological models. In many cases, the invoked causes of the observed motion appeal to mysterious elements. Indeed, the very first test motion was that of the retrograde motion of Mars, which lead to a required epicycle to save the model (e.g., Ptolemy’s unmoving Earth). By the early 1840s, from approximately 50 years of orbital data (since its 1789 discovery) it was apparent that Uranus was disobeying the Newtonian rules in its orbit and speculation mounted that a “large unseen mass” was perturbing the orbit. Using Uranus as a test particle then yields the first notion of dark matter (DM). Alas, it was not DM but merely Neptune, discovered in September 1846. By 1859 enough data had been gathered to reveal that Mercury is also not obeying Newtonian physics but rather revealing curved space–time. The continuation of this history is now set in scales larger than the Solar System. Observations suggest two basic choices: (i) gravity is fully understood and Newton’s second law is invariant (except in very strong gravity) and observed motions on galactic scales require the existence of DM (a currently unproven “epicycle”) or (ii) Newton’s second law can be modified (e.g., MOND) in certain low acceleration scale environments. In this contribution we discuss the case for and against MOND on various scales and conclude that neither MOND nor our current cosmology (ΛCDM) consistently explain all observed phenomena. In general, MOND works much better on small scales than ΛCDM but encounters difficulties on large scales. Moreover, the nature of the acoustic power spectrum of the CMB now pretty clearly shows that a fully baryonic Universe is ruled out, thus necessitating some DM component. But this should not diminish the consideration of MOND as its introduced acceleration scale; ao is fully consistent with the observed structural properties of galaxies in a way that the DM halo paradigm cannot match. Indeed, despite many attempts to falsify MOND, it has always come back from its proclaimed death to provide unique insights into the gravitational nature of galaxies, consistently raising the specter that our current understanding of gravity acting over large spatial scales may be flawed.

The aim of this study was to analyses the surface chemistry of different materials used as retrograde filling and compare it with bulk chemical analyses reported. Surface analysis carried out using an X—ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS) built by VG Scientific. Samples of HAP, GIC and Amalgam materials used were prepared as Discs of 10 mm diameter. These transferred on to XPS aluminum stubs. XPS spectra were obtained from the wide scan spectrum of amalgam, the following elements are present: tin (23.2%); mercury (6.6%); carbon (19%) and oxygen (51.2%). The wide scan spectrum of GIC the elements present in the surface of the material are: oxygen (41.1%); aluminum (5%); silicon (4.6%); carbon (36.1%); calcium (11.3%); fluorine (2.1%) and sodium (0.T). The XPS spectra were obtained from the wide scan spectrum of Hydroxyapatite the elements present in the surface are: Oxygen (49-4%), Carbon (33-9%), calcium (8-6%), and Phosphorus (8-4%). In conclusion, the chemical XPS analyses of the materials used as retrograde filling, have shown them to vary considerably with respect to bulk chemical composition. Further surface analysis could include narrow scans, manipulation of surface chemistry, coupled with in vitro and in vivo tests and experiments to determine the importance of different surface components on biocompatibility.
