Streszczenie:
Mental health issues, and more specifically suicide, within the policing community have been a growing concern in recent years. In 2018 alone, there were nine suicides among active and retired police officers in the province of Ontario. At the time, nine suicides in one year were shocking and began to raise focused awareness of mental health challenges facing the profession. In 2021, the Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General created Mental Health Collaborative Tables comprised of key stakeholders, subject matter experts, public safety personnel (PSP) with lived experience, mental health clinicians, and researchers. The Mental Health Secretariat (MHS) is responsible for supporting the tables. The MHS is accountable to the Deputy Solicitor General and has a mandate to provide a provincial action plan to address mental health issues among PSP. This article explains key observations regarding Ontario’s innovative approach to improving mental health supports for PSP and describes the perspective offered by Karen Prokopec, Manager, MHS at Ontario Ministry of the Solicitor General, and her colleague, Zarsanga Popal, Senior Performance Measurement and Evaluation Specialist with the MHS, on the establishment of the MHS.

Streszczenie:
BackgroundEmployee Occupational Health (‘occupational health’) clinicians have expansive perspectives of the experience of healthcare personnel. Integrating mental health into the purview of occupational health is a newer approach that could combat historical limitations of healthcare personnel mental health programmes, which have been isolated and underused.ObjectiveWe aimed to document innovation and opportunities for supporting healthcare personnel mental health through occupational health clinicians. This work was part of a national qualitative needs assessment of employee occupational health clinicians during COVID-19 who were very much at the centre of organisational responses.DesignThis qualitative needs assessment included key informant interviews obtained using snowball sampling methods.ParticipantsWe interviewed 43 US Veterans Health Administration occupational health clinicians from 29 facilities.ApproachThis analysis focused on personnel mental health needs and opportunities, using consensus coding of interview transcripts and modified member checking.Key resultsThree major opportunities to support mental health through occupational health involved: (1) expanded mental health needs of healthcare personnel, including opportunities to support work-related concerns (eg, traumatic deployments), home-based concerns and bereavement (eg, working with chaplains); (2) leveraging expanded roles and protocols to address healthcare personnel mental health concerns, including opportunities in expanding occupational health roles, cross-disciplinary partnerships (eg, with employee assistance programmes (EAP)) and process/protocol (eg, acute suicidal ideation pathways) and (3) need for supporting occupational health clinicians’ own mental health, including opportunities to address overwork/burn-out with adequate staffing/resources.ConclusionsOccupational health can enact strategies to support personnel mental health: to structurally sustain attention, use social cognition tools (eg, suicidality protocols or expanded job descriptions); to leverage distributed attention, enhance interdisciplinary collaboration (eg, chaplains for bereavement support or EAP) and to equip systems with resources and allow for flexibility during crises, including increased staffing.

The study developed a model for projecting potential economies from manpower substitution among the four core mental health professions and applied the model to a proposed substitution situation which would substitute psychologists for psychiatrists in the delivery of a proportion of present private practice (fee-for-service) psychiatry services in British Columbia. The model identifies three controlling variables: treatment substitutability (TS), practice privilege constraints (PPC), and relative payment rates (RR). In the model, TS and PPC are conceptualized as determining the estimated substitutable share of costs (SSC%); RR, in combination with the values derived for SSC%, is then used to estimate potential cost savings (CS%). Two conditions were defined for each of the three controlling variables in order to provide a range of possible values for SSC% and CS%. For reasons of data availability, data were obtained from the Manitoba Health Services Commission for private practice psychiatry services for FY 1984 and estimates of SSC% calculated. These estimates were then applied to B.C. Medical Services Commission data for FY 1984, and projected values of CS% calculated. Calculations were made both for all services and for the subset of psychotherapy services, which accounted for 80 percent of the larger set of services. The results of the study indicated considerable possibilities for manpower substitution, ranging from 35 to 70 percent for all services and 40 to 75 percent for psychotherapy services. However, the study also found that while salaried psychologists offered the possibility of substantial cost savings, a fee-for-service arrangement suggested virtually no potential savings. Projected values of CS% for the salaried alternative were 20 to 40 percent for all services and 15 to 30 percent for psychotherapy services but in the fee-for-service alternative, only 4 to 8 percent for all services and 4 to 7 percent for psychotherapy services. Licensure and market rigidities which might pose barriers to implementation were evaluated and a review of professional training standards (TS), licensure standards (PPC), and funding alternatives (RR) indicated that the projected economies could be achieved with no necessity for modifications in existing arrangements. PPC appear to present almost no barriers to economies from the proposed manpower substitution and those barriers which are presented by TS and RR limitations still allow considerable potential for economies. Thus, the greatest opportunities for intervention in achieving and enhancing the projected, economies appear to be in the exploration of relative payment rates and relative effectiveness of treatment methods (e.g., psychotherapy vs. pharmacotherapy). The study concludes with a discussion of factors lying outside the boundaries of the model but which impinge, nonetheless, upon the feasibility of the proposed substitution and fall, necessarily, to policy makers to address. The existing network of B.C. community mental health centres was suggested as a possible mechanism for the delivery of the substitutable share of private practice psychiatry services.

Streszczenie:
Understanding and assessing the needs of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel and other first responders is crucial for providing these individuals with the resources needed within their community. The literature discusses how EMS personnel are at risk for psychological impairment due to routine exposure to traumatic events and occupational stressors within EMS organizations. Additionally, the research has supported the importance of positive coping abilities, organizational belongingness, and social support within the lives of EMS personnel to enable them to resiliently handle the occupational stress of their job. This study investigated the occupational needs of EMS providers to determine if they are receiving resources within their organization to cope with occupational stressors. Participants for this study comprised (n=153) paramedics and fire-fighters from the Tidewater EMS Council organization. A needs assessment was conducted to explore correlations between quality of life, resiliency, years of service, level of education, burnout, secondary traumatic stress, interpersonal support, positive and negative religious coping, and the occupational needs of EMS personnel. The results revealed that burnout (r=4.27**) and secondary traumatic stress (r.215*) were important factors for determining occupational turnover among EMS personnel. Furthermore, EMS providers reported occupational needs such as easier access to mental health, improved staff relations, adequate staffing, and improved shift hours are needed within their organization. Future research should explore differences in occupational needs with EMS providers among EMS organizations in metropolitan and rural communities. Scope: Burnout syndrome evaluation in Medical Oncology and Radiotherapy personnel. Method and material: This study has involved 50 persons employee in Medical Oncology and Radiotherapy Department, from all categories: 11 superiors personal (medical doctors, physicists, psychologist), 31 nurses, and 8 auxiliary personnel (stretcher-bearer). The following questionnaires were used: professional exhaustion level questionnaire (with 25 items), questionnaire for attitude and adaptation in stressed and difficulties situations, BRIEF COPE and SES scale. Results: After professional exhaustion level questionnaire for superior personnel, emotional exhaustion prevalence, followed by reduced personal achievement and an accentuated increasing of affecting grade after first year of activity, with a pick around 10 years of activity were revealed. For nurses, share of depersonalization is relative homogenous, in moderate - low limits. The results revealed that 56% of personnel from this study have risk for burnout syndrome developing, without any prevention methods and 12% has already burnout syndrome. Conclusions: In general, this syndrome is under-evaluated and under-diagnosed, and its incidence can be diminishing by using the techniques of stress resistance, psychological counseling, cresting a friendly and tolerant professional climate.

Streszczenie:
Scope: identification of burnout syndrome at the mentioned medical personnel and implementation of some measures to reduce its effects. The study had been prospective, performed in the period between February and April 2019 on a sample of 180 subjects comprising AIC (Anesthesia & Intensive Care) physicians, nurse anesthetists, nurses, and healthcare assistants from ICU and from the surgical unit within Emergency Clinical Hospital of Galati. MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory) survey, validated in Romanian, was self-administered to collect the data. 141 subjects responded out of 180, representing 78.33%. Out of these, a number of 99 subjects present burnout syndrome, respectively a percentage of 70.21%. As reported to the three components of the survey, 73.76% of the subjects present emotional exhaustion at medium and high levels, 46.81% present depersonalization and 62.42% present personal accomplishments’ reduction. According to the professional categories, the highest stress level is registered at the ICU healthcare assistants with 100% burnout, followed by AIC physicians with 80%, nurses and healthcare assistants from the Surgical Unit 64.45%, ICU nurses 61.29%, the “lowest” level being 55.56% for the nurses from Anesthesia Department. It must be noted the severe burnout level according to the profession: as per the emotional exhaustion level, AIC physicians are affected in a percentage of 33.33%, ICU nurses 19.5%, nurse anesthetists 16.67%, nurses from the Surgical Unit 16.36% and ICU healthcare assistants 13.64%. In conclusion, this study shows that the most affected categories are the ICU healthcare assistants and AIC physicians, the physicians having the greatest level of emotional exhaustion, and the healthcare assistants the greatest level of personal accomplishment’s reduction.

During the careers of military personnel of the Parachute Infantry Brigade, who, due to the needs of their service, are exposed to various stimuli in their activities considered high risk, the physical and mental health of these professionals is essential, as they can be affected by high levels of stress, suggesting impacts on their quality of life. Based on the encouragement of professor Janiara de Lima Medeiros provoked by concerns about the inclusion of the female body in the Agulhas Negras Military Academy, starting in 2018, this research was directed to questions about healthy living in the barracks. The objective of this research was to correlate the stress levels and quality of life of 113 military personnel of the Parachute Infantry Brigade, who are fit for airborne activities. Five instruments were used in this research: free and informed consent form; letter of consent; sociodemographic data; stress inventory (LIPP-2000) and quality of life assessment instrument of the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-100). The results highlighted positive correlations between quality of life, length of service and age, and there was no significant correlation between total stress and quality of life. The limitations of the research are discussed, since it did not include samples from other genders, thus restricting the scope of other possibilities inherent to the researched public, since in its active personnel, we have female representation. Another issue is the size of the sample in relation to the population, since it did not include a sufficient number of participants to achieve a smaller margin of error and a higher level of confidence in the results. We emphasize the importance of a more comprehensive study to verify whether the results found in this study will be maintained in the face of changes in the scenario of this military institution.

Mental health is a state of an individual’s emotional and psychological wellbeing (Mental health basics,2018). People with mental illness. // Unresolved mental health problems can to a great extent affect the social, emotional, physical and educational development of teens and young adults, which in turn can have an enormous long-term negative effect on their adult life. (Fraser et al 2007). Studies [ show that young people that have positive mental health are much less likely to exhibit risk-taking behaviors such as addiction and even suicide (Reynold et al., 2013). According to the W.H.O. (2019),1 in 5 of the world's children and adolescents have a mental disorder with About 50% of mental health issues beginning before the age of 14. // Studies in Nigeria reveal that there is an existing high level of ignorance about mental illness with people tending to exhibit negative attitudes towards people who identify as having mental health illness. Also, the Rates of mental health workers vary from below 2 per 100,000 populations in low-income countries like Nigeria to 70 per 100,000 in high-income countries. // Presently openly discussing mental health issues is seen as a taboo in a Nigerian setting and people are scared of being stigmatized or labelled as being mad as madness is abhorred as a sign of a cursed bloodline. Research shows that 1/5th of suicide cases in Nigeria are of people aged 13-19, between January- June 2019,30% of suicide committed in Nigeria were students between the ages of 15-29 (Daily Trust,2019). These are worrying figures showing that young people are not able to access the help they need. // This project safe space project is an open-access web-based innovative inclusive system that makes mental health care accessible to teens and young adults in Nigeria who would have been excluded from accessing necessary education /information because they would be unable to afford to see mental health personnel or are so afraid of being stigmatized. In the website is contained age-appropriate carefully curated OER in the form of informative and easy to understand write-up on the different mental disorders, explainer videos, inspirational stories and a provision of a safe online hub connecting people sharing the same diagnosis. Here users can anonymously share their feelings with an understanding and supportive group. This presentation will be centered on the import of this particular project and giving a walkthrough of the project to demonstrate its design features and functionality.

Abstract Like most business sectors, the oil and gas industry had to adapt to virtual meetings and working from home in the new reality of the global COVID-19 pandemic. This has introduced new complications to completing activities that traditionally require personnel to be on site and collaborate in teams. This paper reviews digital initiatives that allow workers to collaborate virtually on EHS (Environmental, Health, & Safety)-driven practices such as safety audits and engage remotely for improved morale. Specifically, the paper reviews the recent implementation of digital connectivity solutions for remote workers to join virtual ‘Safety Walk and Talks’ in processing facilities and offshore platforms. It also reviews programs to promote connectivity between workers, including virtual town halls and online coffee-hours conversations. While these digitally enabled remote engagement initiatives are still relatively new, they have quickly provided benefits to the safe operation of offshore assets and the morale and mental wellbeing of the workforce. The first virtual ‘Safety Walk and Talk,’ which was conducted in Indonesia, brought together a cross-functional team that was split between a few in-person attendees and a majority of people joining virtually from remote locations. While the digital connection was not seamless, this first-of-its-kind virtual meeting proved the concept. The process improves EHS metrics by minimizing travel of teams to and from the site. It also keeps more people out of potentially hazardous work environments and minimizes exposure to coronavirus or other health hazards. Other digital connectivity measures such as virtual town halls and worker-submitted videos have increased engagement between management, workers, and teams located around the globe. A virtual ‘Coffee Roulette’ program, in which workers spin a virtual wheel that connects them with other employees for informal chats, has allowed people to make new connections and feel less isolated.

To date, there is a wide range of research in Asia, America and Europe on the “first wave” of the COVID-19 pandemic. These studies prove that the main negative factors affecting the mental and somatic health of people include measures of social distancing. In most countries of the world, in order to reduce the burden on the health system, quarantine was introduced. The decrease in social contacts of people due to forced self-isolation caused some psychological problems such as loneliness, stress, fear, apathy. Also, the issue of professional burnout among medical personnel working with COVID-infected patients in conditions of extreme stress and the threat of infection is relevant.

Streszczenie:
Review question / Objective: The aim of this scoping review was to examine what is known about the relationship between the resilience and mental health of undergraduate students enrolled in university or college programs globally. Background: For many undergraduate students, higher education acts as a personal investment in preparation for the workforce, while ultimately allowing students to develop cultural capital (Kromydas, 2017). The transition to university or college is also accompanied by important life changes such as moving to a new campus, meeting new people, and increasing self-efficacy to maintain independent responsibilities (i.e., meeting deadlines, completing household chores, and managing expenses; Henri et al., 2018). As a result, navigating these life changes can contribute to feelings of isolation, as many undergraduate students are disconnected from their friends and families (Diehl et al., 2018). Saleh and colleagues (2017) found that young adults in university or college experience higher levels of stress compared to their non-student counterparts. These stressors are attributed to a more challenging workload compared to that of high school, living with new roommates, and financial concerns (Karyotaki et al., 2020). In the face of these stressors, many undergraduate students are likely to experience mental health challenges either for the first time or in an exacerbated manner, potentially depleting their resilience (Abiola, 2017).

Streszczenie:
This study explores the psychosocial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the population in Greece during the general lockdown period. Specifically, depression, anxiety and stress scores, as well as the factors associated with vulnerability to developing mental health conditions during this period, were investigated. A total of 911 adults participated in an online survey by completing a self-reporting questionnaire that included demographic questions, DASS-42 items (anxiety, stress and depression scales) and other questions related to personal experience. Regression modelling uncovered a significant relationship between gender and DASS scores, with women having significantly higher scores than men for all mental health problems. Participants aged 20–39 years were especially vulnerable to experiencing poor mental health. Unemployed participants reported having worse mental health than others. Having more perceived psychosocial support during the pandemic was associated with lower overall scores. Thus, women, young adults and the unemployed exhibited particularly high levels of vulnerability, while individuals who received social support from relatives and friends during the lockdown were more resilient to the effects of social isolation.

Streszczenie:
Background: This scoping review concerns deaf adult sign language users from any country (e.g. users of South African Sign Language (SASL), British Sign Language (BSL), American Sign Language (ASL) and so forth). It concerns well-being understood to include subjective well-being and following the WHO’s (2001) definition of well-being as “mental health as a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Well-being has three components (Steptoe, Deaton, and Stone, 2015; Stewart-Brown, Tennant, Tennant, Platt, Parkinson and Weich, 2009): (i) Live evaluation, also referred to life satisfaction, which concerns an individual’s evaluation of their life and their satisfaction with its quality and how good they feel about it; (ii) hedonic well-being which refers to everyday feelings or moods and focuses on affective components (feeling happy); (iii) eudaimonic well-being, which emphasises action, agency and self-actualisation (e.g. sense of control, personal growth, feelings of purpose and belonging) that includes judgments about the meaning of one’s life. Well-being is not defined as the absence of mental illness but rather as a positive state of flourishing that encompasses these three components. The review is not concerned with evidence concerning mental illness or psychiatric conditions amongst deaf signers. A specific concern is deaf sign language users’ perceptions and experiences of well-being.

Streszczenie:
This research examined a unique approach to anxiety disorder, one of the most prevalent and growing mental health concerns internationally. It uncovered the mostly invisible and challenging experiences of mothers caring for a child with an anxiety disorder and the value of their reciprocal relationships with their children for both their health and wellbeing. In addition, it explored social identity in making meaningful connection using a generative action-oriented social approach to address anxiety in the community. An appreciative inquiry, using social constructionist theory, and underpinned by elements of kaupapa Māori values, was utilised to explore the research questions. The data was collected via paired interviews, focus groups and small questionnaires with three to four mothers, after which thematic analysis was undertaken to identify important themes. There were four key themes discovered in the findings: (1) the mothers’ ongoing and challenging experiences of being silenced and isolated on the fringes, navigating the quagmire of social and institutional systems to help them help their children; (2) the mothers’ learning to cope by creating calm in the home, the child, and in themselves, often requiring them to ‘suspend’ their lives until their children become more independent; (3) the mothers employing a mother as advocate identity to face the challenges, and co-creating a mother as advocate group identity to continue to face those challenges to design a collective initiative;and (4) the value of freedom that the mothers experienced participating in the appreciative inquiry process with other mothers facing similar challenges and sharing their stories. This study demonstrates how appreciative inquiry is aligned with and supports the value of social identity theory and creating meaningful connections to help position and address anxiety disorder in the community. A key insight gained in this study is that our current social and institutional systems create disconnection in many facets of Western life, which contributes to the generation and perpetuation of stigmatisation, isolation and anxiety disorder. Within a Western capitalistic and individualistic culture, mental illness has become predominantly pathologised and medicated, positioning anxiety disorder within the child, and relegating the social dimension of the biopsychosocial approach as almost irrelevant. As mothers in this system spend valuable energy advocating for more support for their children, they put their own mental health at risk. There is no one solution; however, this study demonstrates that when mothers are supported through an appreciative inquiry process, strengthening their personal and social identities, there is the potential for health and wellbeing to increase for them, their children and the community.

Streszczenie:
Understanding the complexities of human psychology and addressing mental health challenges require a multidimensional approach that transcends conventional boundaries. This manuscript explores the intersection between quantum mechanics and human science, proposing novel insights into the dynamics of human traits and behaviour. By examining the principles of quantum mechanics, particularly superposition, we hypothesize that human traits may exist in a state of potentiality, coexisting with their respective values. This perspective suggests that individuals possess a spectrum of traits, and deliberate effort plays a crucial role in determining their manifestation. Drawing inspiration from quantum mechanics, we advocate for a proactive approach to nurturing positive traits and addressing destructive tendencies. This involves recognizing the power of choice, fostering self-awareness, and actively engaging in personal growth initiatives. We discuss the implications of trait activation and highlight the importance of voluntary effort in shaping behaviour and character. Additionally, we explore practical strategies for navigating psychological challenges. This manuscript underscores the potential of interdisciplinary inquiry to inform innovative approaches to psychological intervention and therapy. Through further empirical research and theoretical exploration, we can unlock new perspectives and strategies for enhancing human flourishing and addressing the complexities of the human psyche.
