Tanner, Jennifer L. Mental Health in Emerging Adulthood. Redaktor Jeffrey Jensen Arnett. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199795574.013.30.

Streszczenie:
This chapter examines the role of mental health in emerging-adult development and adjustment describing a stage-specific model of mental health. It first addresses the importance of the mental health needs of emerging adults before considering a model that conceptualizes and measures mental health based on four general approaches: mental health as normality, mental health as a set of personality traits, equating mental health with personal maturity, and considering whether an individual has achieved average development for age and stage. The chapter also explores three hypotheses that scientifically probe associations between criteria of “adulthood” and mental health: social exclusion, social adaptation, and developmental maturation. Finally, it looks at how the theory of emerging adulthood can be used to set the context for conceptualizing not only new social norms, but also new developmental norms, complemented with the concept of “recentering.”

Streszczenie:
Network approaches have been proposed as an alternative way of thinking about relations between symptoms of mental disorders. Unlike traditional psychometric approaches, network models view these associations as the result of direct interactions between symptoms. Disorders are defined as alternative stable states of a network due to increased connectivity between symptoms. This increased connectivity creates a pattern of reinforcement, so the system can get stuck in a state of prolonged activation. Mental health is defined as the stable state of a weakly connected network. Although symptomatology may be temporarily increased in a healthy network (e.g., due to adverse life events), as the influence of a shock wanes the network will spontaneously return to its healthy state. Strongly connected networks, however, may transition into disordered states upon similar external shocks, and may not naturally recover. Thus, the proposed definitions yield plausible conceptualizations of resilience and vulnerability.

Streszczenie:
There is considerable research evidence indicating that rates of psychiatric disorders are higher in homeless individuals, although in some cases, psychiatric illness itself may lead to homelessness if no safety net is available. These rates of psychiatric disorders across nations, be they high-income countries or low- and middle-income countries, are broadly similar. Homelessness and psychiatric disorders are both strongly affected by various social determinants and may feed into each other. Exploring these issues across the globe, this volume aims to provide up-to-date research and policy evidence from across different countries and cultures. The bidirectional relationship between homelessness and mental ill health is still far from being completely understood, but the impact of social and psychological factors is of interest. In addition, the result of transgenerational factors on people’s mental health is crucial. The devastating and well-proven association between homelessness and mental illness needs to be approached at all levels of governmental policy in each country with policy changes as needed. There needs to be a joined-up approach across departments. Every nation needs to develop optimal models of social care and rehabilitation that build on the particular local research-driven needs of homeless people with mental illnesses. This volume aims to provide a more cultural and international overview with contributors and experts from across continents.

Streszczenie:
Ethical decision making in school mental health provides mental health professionals with a seven-step approach to managing ethical predicaments. It combines guidance from four major codes of ethics, including the American School Counseling Association, National Association of School Nurses, National Association of School Psychologists, and National Association of Social Workers. Ethical issues are endemic for mental health professionals working with minors in a host setting like schools. New interventions, evolving technologies, and a patchwork of ethical and legal guidelines create a constant stream of new ethical dilemmas. Longstanding and complex questions rarely give way to quick and easy answers. The seven-step model presented here enables readers to apply a practical process that minimizes their liability and protects their students. Beginning with an introduction of the moral, legal, and clinical foundations that undergird ethical practice, the authors present an ethical decision-making model with seven steps: know yourself and your responsibilities, analyze the dilemma, seek consultation, identify courses of action, manage clinical concerns, enact the decision, and reflect on the process. The second edition includes meticulously updated chapters based on recent changes to all of the codes of ethics over the past 10 years. It also has a new chapter on the universal issue of ethical recordkeeping. This handy guide is written for multidisciplinary teams of mental health professionals, including school social workers, school psychologists, school nurses, and school counselors. It provides a trusty resource with the following elements: Clearly organized chapters that introduce a process approach to ethical decision-making; Interprofessional and collaborative approach to working with other stakeholders; Case examples and practice exercises illustrate real work application of ethical guidelines; and Glossary, web resources, and U.S. Supreme Court decisions on students’ civil rights.
