Abstract The Russian antiquarian and explorer of the Orthodox East Petr Ivanovich Sevast’anov was one of the first to take photos of the architectural monuments, art treasures and manuscripts of Mount Athos. During the 1850s he organized several expeditions. In 1856, Sevast’anov studied photography in Paris at the atelier of Belloc and bought the materials and equipment needed. In March of 1857, he arrived at Athos and started his work in St. Andrew’s Skete. With the assistance of the librarian of St. Panteleimon’s Monastery Azarii, Sevast’anov got access to many Greek and Slavonic manuscripts. In October of 1857, he returned to Paris and presented the results of his work in a photo exhibition, followed by a public lecture at the Academy on February 5, 1858. The recently discovered two large format cartons of Sevast’anov’s photos at the French Photographic Society, along with the correspondence preserved in his archives, are an important contribution to the history of Byzantine Studies.

Ketegaran dan kesabaran yang luar biasa, sebagai sesama wanita, dari para wanita penambang pasir di Lereng Selatan Gunung Merapi, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta menjadi inspirasi bagi penulis untuk diungkapkan dalam karya fotografi dengan bentuk potret hitam putih karena potret bisa mewakili keadaan sebenarnya dari objek. Penciptaan ini bertujuan mengungkapkan kehidupan wanita penambang pasir di Lereng Selatan Gunung Merapi, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta dalam fotografi potret hitam putih dikaitkan dengan aspek teknis kreatif dan fungsi nilai sosialnya.Proses perwujudan mencakup tahap-tahap penciptaan dan media yang digunakan untuk mewujudkan karya seni fotografi potret yang tentunya membutuhkan bahan, alat, dan teknik. Prosedur pelaksanaan meliputi persiapan, pemotretan, proses editing, penentuan lay out, dan pencetakan hasil akhir. Karya penciptaan ini menampilkan karya-karya yang merupakan serangkaian fotografi potret wanita penambang pasir di Lereng Selatan Gunung Merapi, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Melalui foto-foto yang ditampilkan diharapkan dapat memberikan sudut pandang bagi masyarakat dalam mengapresiasi sosok wanita penambang pasir, melalui ketegaran dan kesabarannya yang luar biasa. Keunggulan karya ini adalah menampilkan foto potret wanita penambang pasir dengan hitam putih sehingga tampak lebih dramatis. Obstinacy and remarkable patience, as a fellow woman, from the women sand miners in South Slope of Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta became the inspiration for the author to be expressed in the form of photographic works with black and white portrait because a portrait can represent the actual state of the object. The aim of this creation reveals a woman's life sand miners in South Slope of Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta in black and white portrait photography associated with the creative and technical aspects of the function of social value. The embodiment process includes the stages of creation and media that are used to create works of art portrait photography that will require materials, equipment, and techniques. Implementation procedures covering the preparation, shooting, editing, determination lay out, and print the final results. This creative work featuring the works is a series of photographic portraits of women sand miners in South Slope of Mount Merapi, Yogyakarta. Through the photographs displayed are expected to provide viewpoints for society to appreciate the female figure sand miners, through fortitude and patience were outstanding. The advantages of this work is to show a portrait photo woman sand miners with black and white so that it looks more dramatic.

The subject of the research is the study of the traditional art of ‘kurak’ by folk craftsmen and its dissemination among the people and in light industry. The purpose of the study is to study the art of craftswomen who create products using kurak. Creating favorable conditions for the production of traditional products using kurak, thus contributing to the production and dissemination of traditional kurak among the population. Ensuring conditions for the preservation in each epoch and the transfer of the art of kurak to future generation ns by using patchwork in clothing and costumes in accordance with fashion trends. The research was carried out in stages: Information was collected on national traditional patchwork products, clothing and dried apricots from printed and online sources. The following methods of empirical research are applied to the collected information and photographs: observation, experiment, comparison, as well as methods of analysis, systematization, generalization and classification of theoretical scientific research. The main stages of patchwork sewing technology have been identified. Equipment and materials have been selected for the manufacture of dried apricots and products with its use of high quality. The technological process of manufacturing the type of kurak ‘kattama’ has been developed.

In the article the author determined the main directions of foreign economic activity of the country and was established that the main course for Ukraine is foreign trade and international investment activity. The author done analysis of the foreign trade balance of Ukraine for 2017 shows the passive balance of trade balance. The analyzed indicators of foreign trade balance show that in 2017 Ukraine economy was opened (0.93), i. e. it is risk-prone, import-dependent (46.8%), the share of exports in the total amount of the gross domestic product was 45.8%, the coefficient of coverage the export over import was 98%. The calculated coefficient of the international intraspecific specialization of the country shows that Ukraine is import-dependent from the following groups of goods and services: works of art (–75,5%), polymer materials, plastics and articles (–75,0%), means of land transport, aircraft, floating means (–68.4%), optical and photographic equipment (-59.9%), state and government services (–99.5%), royalties (–83.3 %), financial services (–74.2%). The author was determined and substantiated the factors influencing the tendencies of export development of Ukraine, which were the basis of correlation-regression analysis. The export links with all selected factors based on the pair correlation coefficients are analyzed. A high correlation was found between exports with imports (0.987), a rather close but inverse relationship with the US dollar (–0.887), a significant and direct correlation between export of FDI to Ukraine (0.693) and a noticeable but inverse relationship exports with GDP (–0.693) and consumer price index (–0.690). During the analysis, the author built two regressive models of export dependence from import transactions and under the influence of the exchange rate. The author substantiated the effect of the fluctuation of the US dollar exchange rate on exports of goods and services, and predicted Ukraine’s exports in the short period.

The aim of this study is to analyze the architecture of residential interiors and furniture making presented at the exhibition in 1912, to indicate the sources of inspiration for designers and to place them in the context of foreign furniture making. The sources of information were the exhibition catalog, press articles, and the archival materials stored in the National Archives in Krakow that had not been used so far, as well as photographs from the collections of the Print Room of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow and the Museum of the Jagiellonian University.The interiors and furniture presented by the artists from the society for Polish applied arts (TPSS) at the Krakow exhibition in 1912 perfectly matched the trends prevailing in designing around 1910. How far they were from the curvy-line Art Nouveau. The designers consciously and creatively used their native tradition, especially the furniture making of the Biedermeier period and folk art. On the one hand, Polish artists drew from the architecture of manor interiors, and on the other they were close to the inspiration of an English home. Their projects can be compared with the works of Austrian artists from the circle of the Vienna Workshop and German artists associated with the Deutscher Werkbund. They were a harbinger of simplified, geometrized, folk-inspired, influencing the beauty of the material, Polish furniture of the interwar period. The equipment for the house of a worker and a craftsman being an example of cheap furniture was characterized by solidity, modesty, operating with economical, but noble forms, inspired by folk ornamentation. They were the beginning of attempts by Polish designers to create minimalist, functional, solid and cheap equipment that were continued in the interwar period.

A valuable aspect during crime scene investigation is the digital documentation of the scene. Traditional means of documentation include photography and in situ measurements from experts for further analysis. Although 3D reconstruction of pertinent scenes has already been explored as a complementary tool in investigation pipelines, such technology is considered unfamiliar and not yet widely adopted. This is explained by the expensive and specialised digitisation equipment that is available so far. However, the emergence of high-precision but low-cost devices capable of scanning scenes or objects in 3D has been proven as a reliable alternative to their counterparts. This paper summarises and analyses the state-of-the-art technologies in scene documentation using 3D digitisation and assesses the usefulness in typical police-related situations and the forensics domain in general. We present the methodology for acquiring data for 3D reconstruction of various types of scenes. Emphasis is placed on the applicability of each technique in a wide range of situations, ranging in type and size. The application of each reconstruction method is considered in this context and compared with respect to additional constraints, such as time availability and simplicity of operation of the corresponding scanning modality. To further support our findings, we release a multi-modal dataset obtained from a hypothetical indoor crime scene to the public.

Currently, technological developments have made it possible for photographic works not only to be present in the form of a flat 180 degree two-dimensional panorama, but even being able to present reality with a 360 degree perspective. This research on the creation of photographic works aims to optimize photographic equipment for photographing with a 360 degree perspective. Eventhough there are many 360 degree application in smartphones, but using a DSLR camera to create works with a 360 degree perspective has the advantage that it can be printed in large sizes with high resolution without breaking the pixels. The method of creating this work is based on the experimental process of developing DSLR camera equipment. This 360 degree photography creation technique uses the 'panning-sequence' technique with 'continuous exposure' which allows the images captured by the camera can be combined or mixed into one panoramic image. In addition to getting an important and interesting visual appearance, the presence of a 360 degree perspective in this work can also give a new nuances in the world of the art of photography.

Diana Arbus is a photographer to be criticized for unethical practices, yet her unique photographic style has left a lasting imprint on civilization. She's good at capturing marginalized societal groups, confronting the harsh realities and ugliness. Her work influenced people's contemplation of photographic art, while simultaneously subjecting her to significant ethical controversies. Arbus's photographs evoke feelings of terror and discomfort, but at the same time, she shed light on the people and experiences hidden in the shadows, revealing the greatness and sacredness of suffering and its essence. This gave rise to an aesthetic of alienation that contradicts traditional aesthetics. In Arbus's photographic works, there is a juxtaposition and fusion of oppositions between art and morality. Traditional aesthetics pursue happiness, harmony, and beauty, whereas Arbus's photographs present pain, distortion, and ugliness. Consequently, some argue that Arbus violates the moral principles of beauty. However, on the other hand, Arbus's works also bring visibility, attention, and understanding to marginalized groups, achieving a fusion of art and morality in a divergent way.

The subject of the study is the analysis of the preservation and creation of an image in the art of photography. The invention of photography and the creation of a technical image is considered the second turning point in human culture. An image is an imagination, an illusion, it is a reflection of the sensory world. The object of the study is the specificity and evolution of attitudes towards the concept of an image in photography as an aesthetic phenomenon. The language of fine art, as an earlier phenomenon, had a significant impact on the creation of a photographic image, but the role of photography in changing the language of fine art is also noted. The purpose of this work is to identify the features of the formation of photographic thinking, in the analysis of its evolution. As a methodological basis of the study, the formal-stylistic method of cognition, the method of sensory cognition and historical and cultural analysis are used. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the analysis of the role of imagination, illusion, magic in creating a photographic image. Causal relationships do not work here - the image of the acts as an intermediary between the world and man. Both the photographer and the subject are the directors of the creation of the image, and the game becomes part of its creation. The image is what the director-photographer wants to see, and how the subject feels. However, the freedom of the photographer is limited by the quality of the equipment, which makes it necessary to improve the technical means of the camera more and more. Creating an image is the implementation of the technical capabilities that are embedded in the camera. The image of photography is the subjective vision of the master, the transformation of the real world into the world of illusion.

La present tesi doctoral s’ha centrat en el repte d’aconseguir, mitjançant Fabricació Additiva (FA), models per a assaig quirúrgic, sota la premissa que els equips per fer-los haurien de ser accessibles a l’àmbit hospitalari. L’objectiu és facilitar l’extensió de l’ús dels prototips com a eina de preparació d’operacions quirúrgiques, transformant la pràctica mèdica actual de la mateixa manera que en el seu moment ho van fer tecnologies com les que van facilitar l’ús de radiografies. El motiu d’utilitzar FA, en lloc de tecnologies més tradicionals, és la seva capacitat de materialitzar de forma directa les dades digitals obtingudes de l’anatomia del pacient mitjançant sistemes d’escanejat tridimensional, fent possible l’obtenció de models personalitzats. Els resultats es centren en la generació de nou coneixement sobre com aconseguir equipaments d’impressió 3D multimaterials accessibles que permetin l’obtenció de models mimètics respecte als teixits vius. Per facilitar aquesta buscada extensió de la tecnologia, s’ha focalitzat en les tecnologies de codi obert com la Fabricació per Filament Fos (FFF) i similars basades en líquids catalitzables. La recerca s’alinea dins l’activitat de desenvolupament de la FA al CIM UPC, i en aquest àmbit concret amb la col·laboració amb l’Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Barcelona (HSJD). El primer bloc de la tesi inclou la descripció de l’estat de l’art, detallant les tecnologies existents i la seva aplicació a l’entorn mèdic. S’han establert per primer cop unes bases de caracterització dels teixits vius -sobretot tous- per donar suport a la selecció de materials que els puguin mimetitzar en un procés de FA, a efectes de millorar l’experiència d’assaig dels cirurgians. El caràcter rígid dels materials majoritàriament usats en impressió 3D els fa poc útils per simular tumors i altres referències anatòmiques. De forma successiva, es tracten paràmetres com la densitat, la viscoelasticitat, la caracterització dels materials tous a la indústria, l’estudi del mòdul elàstic de teixits tous i vasos, la duresa d’aquests, i requeriments com l’esterilització dels models. El segon bloc comença explorant la impressió 3D mitjançant FFF. Es classifiquen les variants del procés des del punt de vista de la multimaterialitat, essencial per fer models d’assaig quirúrgic, diferenciant entre solucions multibroquet i de barreja al capçal. S’ha inclòs l’estudi de materials (filaments i líquids) que serien més útils per mimetitzar teixits tous. Es constata com en els líquids, en comparació amb els filaments, la complexitat del treball en processos de FA és més elevada, i es determinen formes d’imprimir materials molt tous. Per acabar, s’exposen sis casos reals de col·laboració amb l’HJSD, una selecció d’aquells en els que el doctorand ha intervingut en els darrers anys. L’origen es troba en la dificultat de l’abordatge d’operacions de resecció de tumors infantils com el neuroblastoma, i a la iniciativa del Dr. Lucas Krauel. Finalment, el Bloc 3 té per objecte explorar nombrosos conceptes (fins a 8), activitat completada al llarg dels darrers cinc anys amb el suport dels mitjans del CIM UPC i de l’activitat associada a treballs finals d’estudis d’estudiants de la UPC, arribant-se a materialitzar equipaments experimentals per validar-los. La recerca ampla i sistemàtica al respecte fa que s’estigui més a prop de disposar d’una solució d’impressió 3D multimaterial de sobretaula. Es determina que la millor via de progrés és la de disposar d’una pluralitat de capçals independents a fi de capacitar la impressora 3D per integrar diversos conceptes estudiats, materialitzant-se una possible solució. Cloent la tesi, es planteja com seria un equipament d’impressió 3D per a models d’assaig quirúrgic, a fi de servir de base per a futurs desenvolupaments.
La presente tesis doctoral se ha centrado en el reto de conseguir, mediante Fabricación Aditiva (FA), modelos para ensayo quirúrgico, bajo la premisa que los equipos para obtenerlos tendrían que ser accesibles al ámbito hospitalario. El objetivo es facilitar la extensión del uso de modelos como herramienta de preparación de operaciones quirúrgicas, transformando la práctica médica actual de la misma manera que, en su momento, lo hicieron tecnologías como las que facilitaron el uso de radiografías. El motivo de utilizar FA, en lugar de tecnologías más tradicionales, es su capacidad de materializar de forma directa los datos digitales obtenidos de la anatomía del paciente mediante sistemas de escaneado tridimensional, haciendo posible la obtención de modelos personalizados. Los resultados se centran en la generación de nuevo conocimiento para conseguir equipamientos de impresión 3D multimateriales accesibles que permitan la obtención de modelos miméticos respecto a los tejidos vivos. Para facilitar la buscada extensión de la tecnología, se ha focalizado en las tecnologías de código abierto como la Fabricación por Hilo Fundido (FFF) y similares basadas en líquidos catalizables. Esta investigación se alinea dentro de la actividad de desarrollo de la FA en el CIM UPC, y en este ámbito concreto con la colaboración con el Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Barcelona (HSJD). El primer bloque de la tesis incluye la descripción del estado del arte, detallando las tecnologías existentes y su aplicación al entorno médico. Se han establecido por primera vez unas bases de caracterización de los tejidos vivos – principalmente blandos – para dar apoyo a la selección de materiales que los puedan mimetizar en un proceso de FA, a efectos de mejorar la experiencia de ensayo de los cirujanos. El carácter rígido de los materiales mayoritariamente usados en impresión 3D los hace poco útiles para simular tumores y otras referencias anatómicas. De forma sucesiva, se tratan parámetros como la densidad, la viscoelasticidad, la caracterización de materiales blandos en la industria, el estudio del módulo elástico de tejidos blandos y vasos, la dureza de los mismos, y requerimientos como la esterilización de los modelos. El segundo bloque empieza explorando la impresión 3D mediante FFF. Se clasifican las variantes del proceso desde el punto de vista de la multimaterialidad, esencial para hacer modelos de ensayo quirúrgico, diferenciando entre soluciones multiboquilla y de mezcla en el cabezal. Se ha incluido el estudio de materiales (filamentos y líquidos) que serían más útiles para mimetizar tejidos blandos. Se constata como en los líquidos, en comparación con los filamentos, la complejidad del trabajo en procesos de FA es más elevada, y se determinan formas de imprimir materiales muy blandos. Para acabar, se exponen seis casos reales de colaboración con el HJSD, una selección de aquellos en los que el doctorando ha intervenido en los últimos años. El origen se encuentra en la dificultad del abordaje de operaciones de resección de tumores infantiles como el neuroblastoma, y en la iniciativa del Dr. Lucas Krauel. Finalmente, el Bloque 3 desarrolla numerosos conceptos (hasta 8), actividad completada a lo largo de los últimos cinco años con el apoyo de los medios del CIM UPC y de la actividad asociada a trabajos finales de estudios de estudiantes de la UPC, llegándose a materializar equipamientos experimentales para validarlos. La investigación amplia y sistemática al respecto hace que se esté más cerca de disponer de una solución de impresión 3D multimaterial de sobremesa. Se determina que la mejor vía de progreso es la de disponer de una pluralidad de cabezales independientes, a fin de capacitar la impresora 3D para integrar diversos conceptos estudiados, materializándose una posible solución. Para cerrar la tesis, se plantea cómo sería un equipamiento de impresión 3D para modelos de ensayo quirúrgico, a fin de servir de base para futuros desarrollos.

Curiosity, it can be said, alerts us to the interface between art and science, with the ‘object’ being suspended somewhere between the two. Curiosity interfaced with photography and collections are the main components of this thesis. This thesis is organized around two principle outcomes: a written component and an artistic component. The written component investigates how the use of photography as a method of inquiry into the secondary manipulation of ready-made material results in objects that become sites of new meaning and encourage new interpretations. The artistic component was comprised of a photographic installation titled ‘herbarium imaginaire’ (imaginary herbarium), which featured hand-built pinhole cameras and auxiliary photography equipment used in the production of a photographs, as well as featuring an open-house and presentation of botanical specimens and plant collecting processes that was held in the University of Victoria Herbarium.

What we call Lo-Fi photography is defined as a collection of photographic techniques that require little in the way of elaborate technology and that concentrate on home-made cameras, found materials, and kitchen chemistry. Accessibility is emphasized; the processes should be inexpensive, require only a modest space, and pose little risk to the environment or the photographer’s health and safety. The techniques should lend themselves to experimentation, and they should be capable of subtlety, variation, and further elaboration. A connection is drawn between the physical nature of the Lo-Fi photographic processes and the physicality of the resulting photograph. Examples by six contemporary photographic artists are discussed in light of these concerns.

Também pode ser empregada para tratar testemunhos de rochas fragmentados. São dadas instruções passo a passo desde a embalagem, marcação e preservação dos testemunhos logo após a coleta. Na fase de laboratório são apresentadas possibilidades de análises não destrutivas do conteúdo antes de abri-lo. São apresentadas também instruções para o corte dos testemunhos, fotografia, confecção de "peels" com epoxy, impregnação de seções com resina de polyester, amostragens e arquivamento. Ao final são feitas sugestões para interpretações sobre contatos entre unidades sedimentares e suas sucessões. Uma lista de equipamentos e materiais necessários para o processamento de testemunho é apresentada ao final do texto. Palavras-chave: testemunho, sedimentos, geotecnia, perfilagem. Abstract This methodology describes techniques for processing unconsolidated sediment cores recovered in plastic (PVC) or aluminum pipes. It can also be used to treat fragmented rock cores. Instructions are given for packaging, marking and preserving the cores right after collection. Several non-destructive analyses of the content are presented before opening the core. Instructions are given for cutting the cores, photography, making peels with epoxy, impregnating sections with polyester resin, sampling and archiving. To finalize, suggestions are made for interpretations of contacts between sedimentary units and its succession. A list of equipment and materials needed for cores processing is provided at the end of the text. Keywords: corer, sediments, geotechnics, profiling.

Long abundant, photography’s ubiquity and multiplicity has undoubtedly intensified in recent years. Photographs proliferate in the digital domain at an unprecedented scale, offering the partial realisation of many longstanding desires from a global encyclopaedic mapping of the visual world to a museum without walls. Photographic multitudes, however, also embody multifarious fears: of visual noise and mindless repetition, of metaphorical promiscuity and overpopulation. To engage with the apparently unmanageable excess of images is, it seems, to gaze into the abyss. This chapter considers the photographic abyss through an examination of the visual and literary device of mise en abyme and through WJT Mitchell’s concept of the metapicture. Through an exploration of contemporary artists who explore photographic enormity as their subject matter, particularly in relation to works that utilise obsolete photographic materials – in the form of 35mm slides from deaccessioned art history slide libraries – this chapter examines how such works and such materials employ and embody metapictorial strategies. As the works constitute images of images of images, this chapter argues that they offer a productive metapictorial site for surveying desires and anxieties about image abundance and excess.

The fire damage FFS assessment is based on the material degradation associated with heat exposure. The proposed identification of heat exposure zone will be provided in the API 579-1/ASME FFS-1 Standard. As the useful judgments, temper colors and mechanical properties such as tensile strength, hardness, impact energy, ductility and so on for the damaged materials. However, the reference temper colors are shown only by the names of colors without photographic examples and the details of metallurgical analysis are not available in the Standard. This paper presents the temper color reference shows by presenting several photographic examples of different exposed temperature, elapsed time and cooling rates for carbon steel and stainless steel. The metallurgical analysis guide describes typical degradations in mechanical properties and appearances in microstructure observed in the materials exposed to fire, evaluation criteria, procedure for replica preparation, personnel qualification and so on.

(RS), a subsidiary of Rollei, Franke & Heidecke, West Germany, has grown into a mass manufacturer of high precision optical, optomechanical and photographic components/equipment in Singa­pore since 1970 with the majority of designs licensed by Carl Zeiss, West Germany. The author projects Singapore's industrial structure and economic policies. He spot-lights RS for history, general policies, scope, spread and its versatility in a first generation manufacturing base. The effect of major features, to that effect, viz., machinery and equipment used, technologies applied and control techniques observed are dilated. Particular stress is laid on applied modem cost-effective techniques of manufacturing processes ensuring reproduceability and reliability through the State of Art.

The correct specification and application of the materials not only guarantees the accessibility of this space, but also favors and enhances the urban mobility of pedestrians, the walkability, much defended by several professionals of urbanism. Have you stopped to observe the city we live in? The streets, the sidewalks and all of your public areas? Note the immense "invasion" of public space, making life on sidewalkssomething stimulating and interesting, by the enormous confusion implanted: kiosks, street vendors / street vendors, cars parked in a forbidden place and sometimes on the sidewalks, barbecues, holes, steps, obstacles, furniture and urban equipment very poorly located,results of the complete dysfunction ofthis space. The problem observed reflects the current dismay of people and public authorities in relation to accessibility, mobility and safety of people, especially those with reduced mobility,disabled or not. That said, this work objectives tofind a floor of easy installation and low cost that meets the principles of universalaccessibility, urban aesthetics and enhances the mobility of people in the city with autonomy and security. Based on an observational and photographic study of the sidewalks of the Pelinca neighborhood, together with a technical survey of existing sidewalks,the information obtained will be compared with the guidelines contained in the accessibility and urban mobility legislation in force, whether at the municipal, state and federal levels. The data extracted in the evaluation of existing floors, will provide subsidies, for the identification of a new type of pavement, contributing to the Public Power in the elaborationof booklets for the implementation and or adoption of guiding measures for the construction and reformulation of sidewalks, in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes

The Camisea Pipeline Transmission System (PTS), owned by Transportadora de Gas del Perú (TgP) in Peru, consists of two parallel pipelines, a Natural Gas (NG) pipeline and a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) pipeline. The NG pipeline is 834 km in length, including a 105 km loop. The LNG pipeline is 557 km in length. The first 210 km, are defined as having Amazonian geotechnical characteristics, with the presence of sedimentary and metamorphic rocks and a deposit of materials that are easily altered, which are associated with the transition between the Amazon plain and the Andes mountains. The area between km 210 and km 420 is defined as a mountainous sector with materials having better mechanical properties while the section between km 420 and km 730 located in the coastal sector and has erosive processes such as those associated with wind erosion, seismic activity, alluvial deposits, etc. Due to the variety of geological and geotechnical circumstances of the TgP’s RoW, its PTS incorporates many types of geotechnical monitoring in order to maintain and increase the reliability and integrity of the system. In several sectors not all of the types of monitoring are applicable. Some types of monitoring are: inclinometers and piezometers, aerial surveillance, patrolling, strain gauges (SG), topographic, GIS images (satellite, laser, radar, etc.), culverts, geotechnical optical fiber, accelerometer stations, etc. This article describes some unprovoked errors that can occur in a complex operation (in terms of logistics, geological, geotechnical and socially), in the development of geotechnical monitoring activities of an RoW. Some of the errors that can occur are: • Unacceptable photographic record through aerial surveillance; • Damage to the coating during topographic verification; • Field reports with incorrect data; • Incorrect SG records; • Improper placement of equipment over the pipeline; • Incorrect records in the GIS database; • Errors in the topographical record; and • Inexperience of monitoring staff, etc. However, occurrence of the above-mentioned errors has been lessened through improved operating procedures. These procedures are based on discussions from the various “lessons learned” sessions, which improved: • the appropriate recording of conditions identified in the field; • the labor climate; • crosswise communication between the different areas; and • the preventive approach within the operation of the PTS.

Pipe supports were originally intended to be low or no maintenance items. Consequently, pipe supports had become low priority items for the plant’s attention. However, as plants operate well beyond their original design life or are situated in locations that are corrosive, plants are becoming more aware that some pipe support maintenance must be expended. Short comings in the application, material, design, etc. of pipe supports are becoming more and more apparent as plants age. The effect is to impose unintended stress and loading into the equipment and piping that ultimately can become a safety or reliability issue. This is a photographic essay intended to provide graphic evidence of the types of problems that plants face with their aging pipe supports. The intention is to reenforce the need for plants to institute and maintain pipe hanger assessments as part of the total plant reliability effort.

The result of determining the quantitative relationship between the temperature and humidity of enrichment waste materials based on the analysis of digital photographs of laboratory experiments using RGB and Lab methods is presented. Using standard equipment, a laboratory experiment was performed to determine the temperature and humidity of samples of the tailing dam surface layer. Digital photographs of the samples were taken in natural light. The images were processed on a computer to obtain the components values of two color models � RGB and Lab. As a "zero" approximation, the simplest analytical dependence (linear) of temperature on humidity (and vice versa) was studied. The coefficients of calculated linear dependences are compared with the corresponding coefficients of direct processing of experimental data. Indexes and colors of reference pattern are recommended when processing similar laboratory experiments and field studies directly on the dusting object. It was shown that the minimum deviations for the dependences of temperature on humidity correspond to the redness index in the RGB method and the black reference pattern in the Lab method. The minimum deviations for the dependence of humidity on temperature correspond to the saturation index in the RGB method and the black reference pattern in the Lab method.

Abstract Cracks and other defects in ceramic materials can be difficult or impossible to examine and photograph due to the extreme lack of contrast. A method for inspecting translucent ceramics using scattered light, also known as vicinal illumination, will be described. This method has been known in the ceramics industry for quite some time, but is not well known in the testing and failure analysis community. Electronics applications include substrates, packages, multilayer capacitors, and thin film resistors. Ceramic materials are used in electronic applications as microcircuit packages and substrates which carry signals and power between microcircuits. Fine cracks in ceramic materials can result in mechanical failures, electrical failures, and loss of hermeticity. Often, fine cracks are difficult or impossible to detect using standard nondestructive inspection techniques such as visual inspection, ultrasonic inspection, or vapor crack detection. Dye penetrant inspection is usually effective, but contaminates the part, which is unacceptable for space flight hardware. One effective nondestructive inspection method of detecting cracks involves examining the way in which light scatters through the ceramic material when viewed with a standard bright field reflected light microscope. This method, termed vicinal illumination, has been used for detecting cracks during failure analyses of several part types, and screening of space flight hardware. The technique has proven effective on several different types of ceramic materials as well. A related method for use with dark field equipment has also been used to successfully locate otherwise invisible cracks.

Emergency responders, due to the specifics of their work, are exposed to a combination of several different risks and there may be several possible consequences for their safety and health. The relative risk significantly influences the decisions regarding the compromise that must be made between the level of protection, functionality and comfort provided to the emergency worker. The aim of this research was to develop modular PPE systems that protect the emergency responders from injury while acting/ operating effectively in hazardous environments and provide the highest level of protection against a range of possible threats. The modular PPE system, built upon a duty uniform, integrates state-of-the-art protective technologies; provides basic protection from most likely threats (for example: fire, extreme weather etc.); enhances daily-wear comfort; provides increased localized protection as needed (for example: knees, forearms); includes next-to-skin layer and outer layer to provide varying levels of protection as needed; the modular layers easily donned and undonned. This modular approach: i) provides several advantages, including preserving comfort and flexibility until the intervention mission requires the use of the next level of protection; ii) it is a guarantee that emergency responders are not in a position of choosing between their safety and the effectiveness of the mission; iii) the use of modular layers could be the most cost-effective option, because only certain layers may become damaged or be in need of decontamination following an incident.

Self-compacting concrete developed as a material that does not need vibration for compaction has been increasingly being used in routine practice. Successful application of self-compacting concrete (SCC) is difficult to achieve due to increased flowability of the concrete mixture. Segregation of aggregate is one of the major problems during construction and ultimately influences the strength and durability of SCC. A fresh self-compacting concrete with poor segregation resistance can lead to a nonuniform distribution of coarse aggregates in the concrete volume, contributing to blockage of concrete flow, and nonuniform mechanical properties and durability at the hardened concrete. The article presents the unique method for quantitative assessment of aggregate segregation in hardened self-compacted concrete. A digital image analysis procedure using original lighting microscope equipment has been placed to investigate the concrete segregation behavior. The photographs of concrete specimen surfaces were taken to calculate measurements of aggregate volume in concrete. The research results showed that the originally developed attachment and unique aggregate segregation assessment method are useful in laboratory tests and could be used in the on-site application.

Many traditional methods for the repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements require meticulous construction processes with specialized equipment and long material curing periods in order to develop adequate strength and durability prior to returning the pavement to service. This paper summarizes the results of research projects conducted by the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center in order to develop innovative pavement repair procedures and evaluate numerous commercial repair materials that can produce fast long-lasting repairs that facilitate the rapid re-opening of critical pavement infrastructure to traffic. This paper summarizes methods used for the certification and selection of suitable concrete pavement repair materials. In addition, this paper outlines the key activities included in expedient concrete repair processes. In 2008, Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) took the initiative to identify the main causes of reportable incidents in compressor and pump stations. Data was gathered from several sources including the United States� Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Canada�s National Energy Board, and PRCI member companies. More than 1600 incidents were reviewed over an 18 year period (1990 to 2008). The incidents were evaluated based on their frequency of occurrence and the consequences of the incidents (injury, ignition, environmental impact, etc�). In pump stations, pump seals, valves out of sequence due to operator error, and gasket and bolting were identified as the highest impact incidents types. In compressor stations, the three highest impact incident types were found to be pipe components, natural forces (hurricanes and lightning strikes), and gaskets and bolting. During the 2008 project, research roadmaps were developed based on the results of the incident data review. In the process of defining the research projects, a brief review into the available technology for the incidents types was conducted. It was quickly found that a more detailed state-of-the-art review was needed to accurately identify the research required for several of the incident areas. Therefore, a state-of-the-art review of the three highest impact incidents in pump and compressor stations was proposed. The work documented in this paper is the state-of-the-art review of these incidents. In the PRCI CPS 9-1 (2008) project, it was found that more information was needed on several of the incidents in order to fully define the root cause. Therefore, the first task of the PRCI CPS 9-1 (2009) effort was to attempt to gather more information on the top three impact incident types. Thirty-two pipeline companies were contacted and additional information was provided for approximately 25% of the incidents. From the review of this additional and past data, several focus areas were identified for the state-of-the-art reviews. The state-of-the-art studies included a survey of the current technology, identification of common failure mechanisms, and review of strategies to reduce incident occurrences. These studies are reviewed in detail in the appendices of this document. From the state-of-the-art studies and the incident review, technology gaps were identified. Technology gaps are areas where new innovative technologies or applications are required to address current inspection/maintenance strategies for a particular piece of equipment or task. Technology gaps were only identified for pump seals. These gaps included the inability for pump seals to survive process upset conditions, inability to correctly identify and model expected loads and operating conditions for pump seal selection, and lack of installed seal inspection or life prediction methods except through leakage detection. All other incident types (valves out of sequence due to operator error, gaskets and bolting, pipe components, and natural forces) have adequate technology to address the incident occurrences. In the majority of the incidents, even though the technologies exist, it may not be used or applied correctly. Several recommendations were made for future work. These included work that a company may consider conducting internally to reduce the occurrence of incidents and future research. The recommendations for future work for operators and research for industry are summarized in a list below. Research items included on the research roadmaps are indicated with an asterisk.
