The conditions of the Covid 19 outbreak during 2019 and 2020 made some people lose their jobs or income, which resulted in increased financial pressures. This research examines the influence of present fatalistic, materialism, financial knowledge, and marital status on financial stress. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The number of samples that can be processed in the study was 484 respondents. The analysis technique used is the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The direct test results show that present fatalistic and materialism significantly increase financial stress, while financial knowledge and marital status reduce financial stress. Present fatalistic has been shown to positively mediate materialism's effect on financial stress. Meanwhile, marital status strengthens the negative influence of financial knowledge on financial pressure. It means that marital status encourages someone with good financial knowledge to use their ability to manage their finances to avoid financial stress. This study recommends to the public the importance of controlling materialistic behavior, reducing hopelessness, and increasing self-control to reduce financial pressureJEL : D12, D14.ABSTRAKKondisi wabah Covid 19 selama tahun 2019 dan 2020 membuat sebagian masyarakat kehilangan pekerjaan atau penghasilannya, yang mengakibatkan tekanan keuangan semakin meningkat. Penelitian ini menguji pengaruh fatalistik masa kini, materialisme, pengetahuan keuangan, dan status perkawinan terhadap tekanan keuangan. Pemilihan sampel didasarkan pada metode purposive sampling, dan pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner. Jumlah sampel yang dapat diolah adalah 484 responden. Teknik analisis yang digunakan adalah Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Hasil pengujian pengaruh langsung menunjukkan bahwa fatalistik masa kini dan materialisme secara signifikan meningkatkan tekanan keuangan, sedangkan pengetahuan keuangan dan status perkawinan mengurangi tekanan keuangan. Fatalistik masa kini terbukti secara positif memediasi pengaruh materialisme pada tekanan keuangan. Sementara itu, status perkawinan memperkuat pengaruh negatif pengetahuan keuangan terhadap tekanan keuangan. Hal ini berarti bahwa status perkawinan mendorong seseorang yang memiliki pengetahuan keuangan yang baik untuk menggunakan pengetahuan tersebut dalam mengelola keuangannya agar terhindar dari tekanan keuangan. Studi ini merekomendasikan kepada masyarakat pentingnya mengendalikan perilaku materialistis, mengurangi keputusasaan, dan meningkatkan pengendalian diri untuk mengurangi tekanan keuangan.Kata Kunci : tekanan keuangan, materialisme, pengetahuan keuangan, fatalistik masa kini, status perkawinan.

The present research examined the dual nature of the materialistic personality in terms of temporal perspective, subjective well-being, and materialism. The dual-nature model hypothesizes an anxious “mouse” type and a more flamboyant “peacock” type of materialist. Previous research has found a relationship between materialism and past-negative and present fatalistic temporal orientation. This study extended this research by examining the future-negative perspective and its relationship to materialism and well-being. It was hypothesized that the two types of materialists would have different temporal profiles. In addition, it was predicted that a future-negative perspective would mediate the relationship between materialism and well-being as was previously found with past-negative temporal orientation. The results indicated higher dark-future, future-negative, and past-negative scores with the “mouse” type materialists and higher present hedonistic scores in the “peacock” type materialists. Mediation analysis showed an indirect effect of a future-negative perspective in the relationship between materialism and well-being.

The article analyzes various projects of hybridization of materialism and political theory in one conceptual system. Special attention is paid to the critical analysis of the phenomenon of economic materialism of the nineteenth century, which for a long time remained the only example of a materialistic analysis of politics. The subsequent development of materialism that became a new limit of economic determinism, put new problems in the context of the capabilities of materialistic policy. The author proposes to follow the argument of the French philosopher Louis Althusser as a philosophy of aleatory materialism created by the thinker himself, including to substantiate the variations of materialistic understanding of the political. The article consistently disassembled the prerequisites for the crisis of the Marxist economic interpretation of history, which, at the original stage of its own formation, had extremely few common with philosophical materialism. The further struggle of new materialists with the idea of a universal explanatory principle ultimately allowed them to create a new type of philosophical knowledge that is not related to the idea of universal history. The focus in this case is chained to the political aspect of Althusser's Materialism regarding the theory of conjuncture as a genuine object of any materialistic politics. Finally, the author compares aleatory materialism with a number of other directions of post-modern materialistic ontology, whose representatives direct their own criticism towards the anthropological component of the political theory, which, however, leads to the denial of this discipline in principle. Thus, it is Althuserianism that in couple with Schmitterism, are the only examples of a successful project to create a materialistic theory of politics.

In recent years, the work of a diverse range of thinkers has been grouped together under the label ‘new materialism’. This article offers a critical introduction to new materialism that challenges its understanding of historical materialism. It aims to demonstrate not that historical materialism is superior to new materialism, but rather that the latter would benefit from engaging with rather than ignoring or dismissing the former. It begins by defining new materialism in relation to its reappraisal of science, its concept of agency and its underlying ontology. Second, it locates new materialism by demonstrating how and why many new materialists are hostile to historical materialism. Finally, it responds to new materialist criticisms of historical materialism, arguing both that there are potential areas of agreement between the two materialisms and that historical materialism offers valuable resources for analysing historically specific and asymmetric power relations.

Resumo: A obra Eclipse da razão, de Horkheimer, é tensionada por uma ambiguidade conceitual. No texto Meios e Fins, o conceito de razão objetiva tem uma fundamentação metafísica, que é contestada pela análise materialista exposta no texto Sobre o conceito de filosofia. Essa ambiguidade conceitual repercute nas reflexões teológicas tardias de Horkheimer, em que o conceito originalmente metafísico do Absoluto é recepcionado em termos materialistas. Nesse sentido, a teologia negativa postulada por Horkheimer reflete problemas relativos à fundamentação conceitual do materialismo dialético no campo filosófico. O objetivo deste artigo consiste em expor essa ambivalência, e também apontar os problemas conceituais envolvidos na fundamentação filosófica do materialismo dialético. In this sense, the negative theology postulated by Horkheimer reflects problems related to the conceptual foundation of dialectical materialism in the philosophical field. The purpose of this article is to expose this ambivalence, and also to point out the conceptual problems involved in the philosophical foundation of dialectical materialism. La pandemia del Sars-CoV-2 sollecita la sociologia dell'ambiente a interrogarsi sugli approcci adeguati a renderne conto. A lungo la disciplina è stata dominata dal dibattito tra realismo e costruttivismo, de facto privilegiando quest'ultimo. La "svolta ontologica" nelle scienze sociali e umane ha portato alla ribalta materialismi anti-dualisti, idonei sulla carta a confrontarsi con un ibrido socio-materiale quale il Sars-CoV-2. Tuttavia, le implicazioni emancipative tratte dalla critica dei dualismi moderni non hanno riscontro in una situazione in cui l'estrazione di valore coincide sempre più con la negazione della distinzione tra natura e tecnica. Il dibattito sull'Antropocene offre una prospettiva utile a fare chiarezza.

Although "simple" brands encouraging mindfulness and favoring minimalism are becoming popular at rapidly increasing rates, the relationship between consumer materialism or voluntary simplicity (VS) ideology and formation of consumer self/brand connections after exposure to the ads with materialistic or VS theme has not been studies and directly compared. The process underlying the formation of self/brand connections has not being empirically tested either. This paper addresses these gaps in the literature by using an experimental approach. The findings indicate that after exposure to the ad with VS (but not materialistic) appeal, voluntary simplifiers form strong bonds with the brand. On the other hand, materialistic consumers form strong self/brand connections when exposed to the ads with both materialistic and VS appeals. The findings show that both high materialists and simplifiers form brand connections when exposed to the ads with VS appeal, but for fundamentally different reasons. Materialism fosters self-brand connections by evoking thoughts about wisdom and good life, while voluntary simplicity fosters self-brand connections by evoking ad-related nostalgic thoughts and thoughts about equality. The results have important implications for brand managers trying to forge strong brand connections while targeting segments of consumers with different values.

As a starting point, this article looks at the nexus between New Materialisms and Indigenous Studies, concluding that the New Materialists' almost entire failure to interact with Indigenous knowledges and scholarship whilst employing the nomenclature ‘new’, is merely another over-exaggerated example of western claims to knowledge itself. The majority of the article discusses Indigenous Materialisms more specifically, introducing a new framework for defining eras of colonialism, namely ‘sovereignty colonialism’, ‘biopolitical’ or ‘disciplinary colonialism’, and ‘ security colonialism’. In the final third of the article, I focus on ‘biopolitical’ or ‘disciplinary colonialism’ in particular, fleshing out notions such as Indigenous materiality preceding thought, the materialism of colonisation including colonial sport, and the agency of Indigenous bodies to resist.

Neste artigo pretendemos estabelecer uma relação entre o "materialismo especulativo" de Quentin Meillassoux e a filosofia materialista de Louis Althusser. Se ambos os materialismos se definem a partir da afirmação de uma dimensão objetiva, externa ao sujeito, e da possibilidade de conhecê-lo, distanciam-se, porém, em um ponto fundamental: o registro do espaço constituído pelas práticas sociais que ultrapassam e determina à filosofia. O objetivo deste artigo é, nesse sentido, elucidar e ponderar essa distância entre um materialismo e outro, a fim de dar conta da diferença que se joga entre eles em termos de alcance e significado político das teses que o caracterizar.

AbstractPrevious research in Australia has inferred that materialism and its possession-defined ‘Success’ subtheme described by Richins and Dawson (1992) has characteristics in common with specific Type A behaviour including competitiveness and aggression. Given that Australian materialists appear to have similar inclinations to their North American counterparts, assumptions by the latter that materialism and Type A behaviour fall under the same cultural value of work and wealth might also be applicable in Australia. Hence, the present study aims to explore the relationship between materialism and Type A behaviour, with psychometric measures of each administered to 193 Australian participants. Scores on Materialism were positively correlated with Type A behaviours, while the Success subscale was only significantly correlated with the second Type A item, assessing competitiveness. However, while materialistic pursuits might provide a culturally sanctioned outlet for competitive behaviours deriving from existing Type A personalities, it could also be argued that contemporary consumer society encourages such behaviours.

Frente a la tradicional comprensión de la materia como un conjunto de objetos pasivos, desorganizados e inertes, sostenida también desde el pensamiento materialista clásico, la autora propone una nueva consideración de la materialidad como agente de transformación, un enjambre de realidades vivas y efervescentes que suspende la distinción entre lo humano y lo no-humano, entre lo orgánico y lo inorgánico. De este modo, y consciente de su tradición, el libro reconstruye una genealogía heterodoxa de (proto)vitalistas materiales, junto a los que piensa nuevas aplicaciones políticas, afectivas y ecológicas de este materialismo vibrante.

XIX a. pabaigos – XX a. pradžios Lietuvos materialistai materijos netapatino su kokiu nors realiai egzistuojančio pasaulio elementu. Materiją jie traktavo kaip begalybę konkrečių struktūrų su daugybe įvairiausių savybių ir sąveikų. Visi tuometiniai Lietuvos materialistai laikėsi nuomonės, kad atomas yra ne tik mažiausia, bet ir nedaloma medžiagos dalis. Jie tęsė senovės graikų filosofo Demokrito ir vėlesniųjų materialistų atomistines tradicijas. Kartu buvo reiškiamas ir naujesnis požiūris, nesiejantis materijos su materialių objektų konkrečiomis fizinėmis savybėmis, būviu ar rūšimis. Daroma išvada, kad Lietuvos materialistai, pabrėždami materijos ir sąmonės santykį, materializmo ir idealizmo, agnosticizmo ir religijos skiriamuosius bruožus, buvo priartėję prie lenininės materijos sampratos, nors ir nesugebėjo iki galo įveikti kai kurių trūkumų, būdingų prancūziškajam ir metafiziniam materializmui.

A partir de una lectura centrada en On the Nature of Marx’s Things. Translation as Necrophilology, el siguiente artículo intenta situar la lectura de Marx desarrollada por su autor, Jacques Lezra, tanto en el contexto de sus demás contribuciones relativas a un materialismo salvaje, como en el contexto de los actuales debates sobre nuevos materialismos y ontologías orientadas al objeto. La referencia lucreciana de Lezra permite activar lo que Althusser llamó una corriente subterránea de materialismo aleatorio, cuestión que no sólo problematiza el materialismo histórico convencional, sino la dialéctica materialista y su origen hegeliano. En efecto, subyace tanto a su libro sobre Marx, como a sus demás monografías una lectura fuerte de Lucrecio y su De Rerum Natura, cuestión clave para comprender la singularidad de sus aproximaciones al problema de la traducción, de la mercancía, de la filología negativa y, sobre todo, de un republicanismo no normativo ni soberanista, constituido por instituciones defectivas y abiertas.

Modern consumer lifestyles have a negative impact on people’s welfare. Currently, debt is an indication of modern consumer behavior because income is considered insufficient to meet needs and wants. This causes society to become more consumptive. What factors influence the tendency to get into debt is an interesting issue to research. This research aims to examine materialism, self-control, savings orientation, and income in influencing propensity to indebtedness in metropolitan communities. Sampling was carried out purposively in two metropolitan areas, namely DKI Jakarta and its surroundings and Surabaya and its surroundings. Data were collected using a survey by distributing questionnaires to the community in both areas where the unit of analysis was the family. The data analysis technique used in this research is Partial Least Square. The results of this research show that of the four variables tested, there are two variables that have a significant effect on the propensity to indebtedness, namely materialism and self-control. The savings orientation and income variables were proven to have no effect on the propensity to indebtedness. Materialism has a significant positive effect on the propensity to indebtedness, meaning that the higher an individual's materialistic attitude, the higher the propensity to indebtedness. Self-control has a significant negative effect on propensity to indebtedness, meaning that the higher a person's self-control, the lower propensity to indebtedness. The implication of the results of this research is that metropolitan communities should reduce their materialistic attitudes and increase their self-control in order to be able to reduce the propensity to indebtedness so that ultimately the community can be free from debt. Saat ini berhutang merupakan salah satu indikasi perilaku konsumen modern karena pendapatan dianggap kurang untuk memenuhi kebutuhan dan keinginan. Hal ini mengakibatkan masyarakat menjadi lebih konsumtif. Faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi kecenderungan berhutang merupakan isue yang menarik untuk diteliti. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji materialisme, pengendalian diri, orientasi menabung, dan pendapatan dalam mempengaruhi kecenderungan berhutang masyarakat metropolitan. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan secara purposive pada dua wilayah metropolitan yakni DKI Jakarta dan sekitarnya serta Surabaya dan sekitarnya. Pengumpulan data dengan menggunakan survei dengan menyebarkan kuesioner pada masyarakat di kedua wilayah tersebut dimana unit analisisnya adalah keluarga. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Partial Least Square. Hasil penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa dari keempat variabel yang diuji, terdapat dua variabel yang berpengaruh signifikan terhadap kecenderungan berhutang yakni materialisme dan pengendalian diri. Untuk variabel orientasi menabung dan pendapatan terbukti tidak berpengaruh terhadap kecenderungan berhutang. Materialisme berpengaruh positif signifikan terhadap kecenderungan berhutang, artinya semakin tinggi sikap materialime individu semakin tinggi kecenderungan berhutang. Pengendalian diri berpengaruh negatif signifikan terhadap kecenderungan berhutang, artinya semakin tinggi pengendalian diri seseorang semakin rendah kecenderungan berhutangnya. Implikasinya adalah bahwa masyarakat metropolitan sebaiknya menurunkan sikap materialismenya serta meningkatkan pengendalian dirinya agar mampu menurunkan kecenderungan berhutang yang akhirnya masyarakat dapat terbebas dari hutang. El presente texto es una aproximación crítica al Ensayo sobre un proletariado sin cabeza de José Revueltas. A partir de las indicaciones metodológicas heredadas por Louis Althusser en su tratamiento de El Capital y de las nociones de posición idealista y posición materialista, se reconstruye el contenido del Ensayo. En el interior de este, se denota la coexistencia de estas dos posiciones: la idealista que remite a una filosofía de la historia y la materialista, que aborda los problemas específicos de una coyuntura. Finalmente, se apuntala una lectura crítica, en donde la noción de “proletariado de cabeza” debe ser repensada en el conjunto de la historia del movimiento obrero en México y de su relación con el Estado. From the methodological indications inherited from Louis Althusser in his treatment of Das Kapital and the notions of idealist and materialist position, this paper reconstructs the content of the Essay. In his interior, the coexistence of these two positions is denoted: the idealist that refers to a philosophy of history and the materialistic one, which addresses the specific problems of a conjuncture. Finally, underpinned in his critical reading, the notion of “head of the proletariat” rethink the history of the labour movement in Mexico and its relationship with the State. This essay investigates the differences and points of contact between Walter Benjamin's concept of ‘constellation’ (developed in various texts written between 1920 and 1940) and the notion of ‘assemblage’ as theorised by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. Both concepts address the entanglement of discourse and matter, bodies and devices, and raise questions regarding the historicity and temporality of different kinds of multiplicity. Presently, the term ‘assemblage’ figures prominently in the context of the new materialism, a theoretical movement which calls for a renewal of materialist ideas, proposing a break with the historical materialism of the past. Against this backdrop, the essay has a twofold purpose: first, by focusing on the notions of constellation and assemblage, it seeks to highlight the differences and analogies between the materialisms of Benjamin, on the one hand, and Deleuze and Guattari, on the other. Second, by examining the new materialism's appropriation of Deleuzian ‘assemblage theory’, it will not only analyse what is ‘new’ about the new materialism, but also underline its conceptual errors and political problems. Eventually, what the essay argues is that our contemporary (‘new materialist’) understanding of assemblages might indeed benefit from a more thorough engagement with the historical materialism of an author like Benjamin.

Unit analisis pada penelitian ini adalah individu dosen Universitas Kristen Indonesia Maluku (UKIM) selaku konsumen online shopping yang pernah melakukan pembelian impulsif secara online. Metode pengambilan sampel menggunakan metode nonprobabilitas, pengambilan sampel menggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Penentuan sampel berdasarkan pertimbangan (judgment sampling), dengan kriteria yakni, (1) dosen tetap Universitas Kristen Indonesia Maluku (UKIM), dan (2) dosen yang pernah melakukan pembelian impulsif secara online. Jumlah sampel yang dianalisis dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 48 orang. Analisis data menggunakan metode statistik Moderated Regression Analysis. Hasil penelitian membuktikan Sifat materialisme berpengaruh terhadap pembelian impulsif online. Sifat dosen UKIM selaku konsumen yang menekankan nilai pada materi, mementingkan diri sendiri, ingin memiliki banyak barang, dan merasa kepemilikikan tidak membuat bahagia meningkat, maka perilaku pembelian tampa berpikir akibat, pembelian spontan, pembelian terburu-buru, dan pembelian dipengaruhi keadaan emosional akan meningkat. Konsumen yang memiliki sifat materialisme tergolong konsumen berusia muda serta memiliki kecenderungan interaksi dengan media sosial yang tinggi berpotensi melakukan belanja impulsive secara online. Penelitian ini membuktikan Dampak moderasi kontrol diri sebagai pengontrol sifat konsumen dalam hal penilaian barang berdasarkan simbolik barang, status sosial, membangun status sosial dari pembelian suatu barang, serta prestise secara berlebihan. Dampak moderasi kontrol diri terbukti berkontribusi pada pengaruh sifat materialisme terhadap pembelian impulsif online. Kata kunci : Sifat materialisme, kontrol diri, pembelian impulsif online. Abstract This study aims to (1) examine the effect of materialism on impulsive online purchases. (2) To examine the moderating effect of self-control on the relationship between materialism and impulsive online purchases. This type of research is a causal research. The unit of analysis in this study is an individual lecturer at the Indonesian Christian University of Maluku (UKIM) as online shopping consumers who have made impulsive purchases online. The sampling method using nonprobability method, sampling using purposive sampling technique. Determination of the sample based on judgment (judgment sampling), with the criteria namely, (1) permanent lecturers at the Indonesian Christian University of Maluku (UKIM), and (2) lecturers who have made impulsive purchases online. The number of samples analyzed in this study were 48 people. Data analysis used the statistical method of Moderated Regression Analysis. The results of the study prove that materialism affects impulsive online purchases. The nature of UKIM lecturers as consumers who emphasize the value of material, are selfish, want to have a lot of goods, and feel that ownership does not increase happiness, so the buying behavior without thinking results, spontaneous purchases, rush purchases, and emotional purchases will increase . Consumers who have materialistic characteristics are classified as young consumers and have a high tendency to interact with social media with the potential to do impulsive shopping online. This study proves the impact of moderation of self-control as a control for consumer behavior in terms of valuing goods based on symbolic goods, social status, building social status from purchasing an item, and excessive prestige. The impact of self-control moderation has been shown to contribute to the influence of materialism on impulsive online purchases. Keywords: Materialism, self-control, online impulsive buying.

This study aims to further explain Badiuzzaman Said Nursi's thought on prophethood. This library study employs a historical approach in extracting data and content analysis. The study shows that Said Nursi's thought concerning prophecy stems from his criticisms of the materialistic-mechanistic paradigm of Western civilization. This view basically rejects the transcendental perspective and spiritual values in understanding nature. The notion of materialism from the West attacks the key concepts of Islamic teachings. Realizing this, Nursi was called upon to give a very serious intellectual response. It was at this point that Nursi offered his ideas on prophethood. In Risālah an-Nūr, Said Nursi strives to revive prophetic values by applying theological approaches to be easily understood by society. Nursi’s thought is built on an effort to revive prophetic values so that it could shed light on Turkish people who had suffered serious illnesses due to the influences of the Western paradigm of mechanical materialism.y. This prophetic knowledge would eventually end in faith, which leads to eternal happiness for believers and eternal misery for unbelievers.Artikel ini bertujuan untuk lebih menjelaskan pemikiran Badiuzzaman Said Nursi tentang kenabian. Studi literatur ini menggunakan pendekatan historis dalam mengekstraksi data dan melakukan analisis konten. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa pemikiran Said Nursi tentang nubuat berasal dari paradigma materialisme-mekanistik yang lahir dari peradaban Barat. Pandangan ini pada dasarnya menolak perspektif transendental dan nilai-nilai spiritual dalam memahami alam. Gagasan materialisme dari Barat menyerang konsep-konsep kunci ajaran Islam. Menyadari hal ini, Nursi dipanggil untuk memberikan respons intelektual yang sangat serius. Pada titik inilah Nursi menawarkan gagasannya tentang kenabian. Dalam Risālah an-Nūr, Said Nursi berusaha untuk menghidupkan kembali nilai-nilai kenabian dengan menerapkan pendekatan teologis agar mudah dipahami oleh publik. Pemikiran Bediuzzaman dibangun dalam upaya untuk menghidupkan kembali nilai-nilai kenabian sehingga dapat memberikan cahaya kepada orang-orang Turki yang sudah menderita penyakit serius karena pengaruh Barat dengan paradigma materialisme mekanis yang tidak memiliki dimensi spiritualitas. Pengetahuan kenabian ini pada akhirnya akan berakhir dalam iman, yang oleh Bediuzzaman disebut kebahagiaan esensial (manusia memiliki iman) bagi manusia, dan yang menolak (kufur) keberadaan peran Tuhan dan Nabi, yang merupakan kesengsaraan sejati.

No presente artigo, pretende-se expor e analisar as críticas que Noam Chomsky (2000) dirige contra o materialismo em filosofia da mente. Para o referido autor, a rigor, não faria sentido questionar o estatuto ontológico da mente, na medida em que os próprios físicos e filósofos materialistas desconhecem 90% da matéria que constitui o universo (a matéria e energia escuras). Deste modo, Chomsky dirá que no tempo de Descartes, da filosofia mecânica, o que se fazia era ciência normal, ao passo que após o advento das ideias de Newton, o universo passa a ser antimaterialista. O presente trabalho pode ser útil/valioso à filosofia e história das ciências naturais, à física e à filosofia da mente. Palavras-chave: Materialismo; Matéria Escura; Filosofia Mecânica. Abstract The aim of this paper is to expose and analyze Noam Chomsky’s criticisms against materialism in philosophy of mind. For this author, strictly speaking, questioning the ontological status of the mind would not make sense, considering that the materialistic physicists and philosophers themselves are unaware of 90% of the matter that constitutes the universe (dark matter and energy). Accordingly, Chomsky will say that in Descartes’ time, or in times of mechanical philosophy, what was done was normal science, while after the advent of Newton's ideas the universe becomes anti-materialist. AbstractThis article sets out the major tenets of new materialism and maps out its implications for international law. It considers what new materialism might offer for those of us working within international law in the way of new insights, resources, practices or politics. It first sets the contours of new materialism within the broader material turn. It then elaborates three main tenets of new materialism’s methodology, theory, and ontology: its attention to matter in its physicality; the embedded and entangled subject; and the vitality or agency of objects. The article focuses on how new materialist work might help us to understand, first, subjectivity and second, power and accountability in international law. It concludes that new materialist approaches offer important and compelling insights, working against entrenched categories and structures that continue to perpetuate or excuse violence and harm in international law’s doctrines and practices. These insights provide resources for rethinking power and subjectivity, and the role these play in international law. However, those of us working to consider how we can respond to pressing crises of justice and coexistence within international law may find new materialism most powerful when brought into relation, and deep conversation, with more structural methodologies. Notably ‘older’ (Marxist or historical) materialisms grasp embedded power relations and deep-rooted systemic harms in more concrete ways. This is, the article concludes, a conversation that international law scholars are well placed to contribute to, deepening both ‘old’ and ‘new’ materialist insights for international law.

Feuerbach-teesejä koskevan esitykseni pohjustukseksi luon katsauksen Marxin näkemyksiin hänen intellektuaalisen työnsä kahdesta ”kohdeyleisöstä”, työväenluokasta ja porvaristosta, sellaisina kuin ne nousevat esille hänen Pääomansa yhteydessä. Artikkelissani luen Feuerbach-teesejä eräänlaisena ”agendana”, toimintasuunnitelmana, joka pohjustaa ja suuntaa Marxin käsityksiä teorian ja käytännön, työväenluokan ja hänen (”marxilaisen”) teoriansa suhteista. Abstrak Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui hubungan antara peranan keluarga dan materialisme dengan perilaku compulsive buying online pada remaja di wilayah Kecamatan Bulak Surabaya. Sampel penelitian yang digunakan sebanyak 75 orang yaitu Remaja di Kecamatan Bulak Surabaya dengan pendekatan menggunakan kuantitatif korelasional. Penghitungan statistik menggunakan analisis regresi linier berganda, dengan hasil signifikansi yang diperoleh yaitu p = 0,000 (p<0,05), maka dapat disimpulkan bahwa ada hubungan antara peranan keluarga dan materialisme dengan perilaku compulsive buying online pada remaja di wilayah Kecamatan Bulak Surabaya. Adapun hubungan antara masing-masing variabel, peranan keluarga dengan compulsive buying diperoleh nilai p = 0,740 (p>0,05) yang berarti tidak ada ada hubungan antara peranan keluarga dengan compulsive buying, sedangkan hubungan materialisme dengan compulsive buying diperoleh nilai sebesar p=0,000 (p< 0,05) yang berarti ada hubungan antara materialisme dengan compulsive buying. Kata Kunci: Peranan Keluarga, Materialisme dan Compulsive buying Abstract The aim of this study is to find out the correlation between family roles and materialism with behavior compulsive buying online in adolescents in the Bulak District of Surabaya. The research sample used in this study was 75 people with a quantitative correlation approach. The calculation of statistics using multiple linear regression correlation shows that the significance obtained is p = 0,000 (p<0,05), it can be concluded that there is a correlation between family role and materialism with behavior online compulsive buying in adolescents in the Bulak District of Surabaya. The correlation of each variable between the role of the family with compulsive buying obtained a value of p=0.740 (p>0.05), it means that there is no correlation between the role of the family with compulsive buying. The correlation between materialism and compulsive buying obtained a value of p = 0,000 (p<0.05), it can be concluded that there is a correlation between materialism and behavior online compulsive buying. The purpose of this study was to prove the influence of religiosity on materialism in housewives. The population of this study was 183 housewives from 4 areas with different characteristics in Gresik Regency, namely urban, rural, industrial and santri areas. The sample determination was carried out using propotionate stratified random sampling technique, with a total sample of 126 people. The materialism scale adopted from Richins and Dawson (1992) and the religiosity scale adopted from Glock and Stark (1968), have been tested by Lutfia & Hidayat (2020). Each of these scales obtained a Cronbach Alpha value greater than 0.70, so that this research instrument can be said to be reliable. Data collection was carried out using a questionnaire with a Likert instrument, and processed with simple linear regression analysis. The test results show that the level of religiosity of housewives has a significant negative effect on the level of materialism, with a coefficient of determination of 11.3%. This means that high religiosity will reduce materialism. The majority of respondents rated their level of religiosity as moderate and their level of materialism as low. ABSTRAK Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk membuktikan adanya pengaruh religiusitas terhadap materialisme pada ibu rumah tangga. Populasi penelitian ini sebanyak 183 orang ibu rumah tangga dari 4 wilayah dengan karakteristik berbeda di Kabupaten Gresik, yakni wilayah perkotaan, pedesaan, industri dan santri. Penentuan sampel dilakukan menggunakan teknik propotionate stratified random sampling, dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 126 orang. Skala materialisme yang diadopsi dari Richins dan Dawson (1992) dan skala religiusitas diadopsi dari Glock dan Stark (1968), telah diuji coba oleh Lutfia & Hidayat (2020). Masing-masing skala tersebut didapatkan nilai Cronbach Alpha lebih besar dari 0,70 maka instrumen penelitian ini dapat dikatakan handal (reliabel). Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner dengan instrumen likert, dan diolah dengan analisis regresi linier sederhana. Hasil pengujian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat religiusitas ibu rumah tangga memiliki pengaruh negatif signifikan terhadap tingkat materialisme, dengan koefisien determinasi sebesar 11,3%. Hal ini berarti religiusitas yang tinggi akan dapat menurunkan materialisme. Mayoritas responden menilai tingkat religiusitas mereka sedang dan tingkat materialisme rendah.

After some three decades during which scholarly discussion of materialism lapsed, a revival of interest is taking place. The social sciences and critical humanities have embraced “new materialisms” with their “new” ontologies and epistemologies, while within disciplinary philosophy debates between reductionist philosophy of mind and emergentists present sharply opposed versions of materialism. In theoretical biology, “biosemiotic realism” promotes an emergentist materialism focused on mindlike processes in nature as codetermined by physicalist and informational causalities, while nearly everywhere where scholarship intersects with political–economic issues, a resurgent interest in Marxist materialisms has begun recapitulating elements of the debate between “Western” and “orthodox” positions. To make sense of the welter of present discourse from a Marxist perspective, it is useful to compare the positions of these contemporary tendencies with those of critical realism and allied strong versions of Marxist materialism, such as that associated with the writings of Friedrich Engels.

The United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 the “International Year of Millets” in order to promote millet cultivation, consumption, and conservation. Millets play an important role in food security, livelihoods, and biodiversity. Despite its numerous benefits, millet cultivation and consumption in Uttarakhand have declined due to a variety of constraints. This paper examines the effects of regiocentrism and materialism on intention towards Uttarakhand’s regional food products (millets). It employs PLS-SEM to investigate relationships between latent variables and generate results on a sample of 460 participants. This study elucidates the intricate interplay between materialism, regiocentrism, and intention towards regional food products in the Himalayan region, enriching the theory of planned behavior (TPB) with a nuanced understanding of personal values and regional identity. It reveals materialism’s positive association with attitudes towards regional food products, suggesting materialistic individuals may view these products as status symbols, thus affecting behavioral intentions. Additionally, the research highlights regiocentrism’s dual influence—enhancing attitudes yet deterring purchase intentions—underscoring the complexity of regional pride in consumer decision-making. These findings advance TPB by integrating broader value systems and cultural context, offering significant theoretical and practical insights for promoting sustainable consumption patterns.

Abstract Benjamin J. Robertson’s None of This Is Normal (2018) addresses the entire fictional project of the New Weird writer Jeff VanderMeer. In doing so, Robertson intervenes within recent discussions of new materialism, accounts of which have been entwined with the New Weird. Robertson finds VanderMeer querying the normalizing discourses of capitalism and colonialism, showing how the New Weird can serve as a site to extend and challenge the sometimes-limiting frameworks of the new materialisms. As its critics have shown, object-oriented ontology and other new materialisms risk reinforcing problems of primitivism and positivism. For Robertson, VanderMeer evades such problems by foregrounding the liberal, humanist frameworks marginalizing planet and colonized subject alike. Examining what he calls VanderMeer’s fantastic materiality, Robertson contends that VanderMeer supersedes what Darko Suvin calls cognitive estrangement; VanderMeer asks readers to encounter a world that is estranged but not cognitively recoverable. And yet, by reminding readers of VanderMeer’s poststructuralist attention to language and narrative, Robertson avoids the often-masculinist tendency to posit a primitive world beyond human cognition. None of This Is Normal will be useful to scholars interested in pushing past new materialism’s limits while retaining the field’s insights for questions of climate change and nonhuman agency.

PurposeThis paper studies the sociocultural drivers of materialism cross-culturally. Research in this area is scarce, even though rapid social transformations worldwide, fueled by globalization, make it imperative to identify the conditions under which commonalities and differences in materialistic tendencies are most likely to evidence among consumers as they seek to assert, restore, or enhance their self-concept and status in the context of global consumption trends.Design/methodology/approachThe psychographic determinants of materialism were rigorously validated across a diverse set of eight countries, by investigating which facets of acculturation to global consumer culture and national ethnic identity, along with consumer ethnocentrism, encourage or repel materialism. Using multigroup SEM and other analyses, the authors confirmed construct dimensionality and ascertained the stability of the relationships.FindingsThe most consistent positive drivers of materialism were self-identification with global consumer culture and exposure to American-based global mass media. The results demonstrated the compatibility of national identity and traditions with materialistic tendencies. Materialism was positively related to or independent of consumer ethnocentrism.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings offer consequential insights for both research and practice, although the cross-sectional character of survey research and certain sampling characteristics limit their generalizability.Practical implicationsThe results pinpoint segments that spill over national boundaries, and those that remain geographically constrained, thus providing guidance for marketing and communication strategies to practitioners.Social implicationsThe authors shed light on two widely held yet insufficiently researched assumptions: that the homogenizing effect of global consumer culture may be fomenting materialism worldwide, and that nationalistic, parochially oriented consumers may be more capable of resisting materialistic values.Originality/valueThe study design addresses several shortcomings of prior research, and its findings advance the understanding of materialism and its antecedents by identifying the conditions driving materialistic tendencies.

Purpose This study aims to investigate emerging adults’ emotional responses to a commercial with materialistic cues, and the commercial’s perceived and actual effect on materialism – taking the role of pre-existing attitudes toward advertising into account. Design/methodology/approach The paper used a mixed-method design to gauge emotions evoked by materialistic cues both qualitatively and quantitatively. Emotions were assessed using both open-ended and close-ended questions. Perceived effectiveness was also measured using close-ended questions. To establish the commercial’s actual effect, an online experiment was conducted. In total, 179 individuals between the ages of 18 and 25 years participated. Findings Emerging adults’ pre-existing attitudes toward advertising predicted their emotional responses toward a commercial with materialistic cues (i.e. influencing whether they are negative, neutral or positive) as well as the perceived effectiveness of materialistic cues in advertising. A one-time exposure to a commercial with materialistic cues does not increase materialism. Practical implications Emerging adults who dislike advertising, tend to also dislike advertising with materialistic cues and perceive it as less effective. However, young consumers with an interest in advertising do appreciate the use of materialistic cues and perceive them as being effective. Although no actual effect was found, this could be a reason for advertisers to use materialistic cues. Originality/value This paper is the first to investigate consumers’ emotions toward materialistic cues, and to study their perceived and actual effect. Moreover, it is the first to examine the link between advertising exposure and materialism among emerging adults.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh kualitas produk, citra merek dan materialisme terhadap kepuasan pelanggan. Analisis data yang digunakan adalah regresi linier berganda, dengan menggunakan SPSS 25. Menggunakan rumus Slovin, peneliti menggunakan sampel sebanyak 100 responden. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa variabel kualitas produk, citra merek, dan materialism secara Bersama-sama dan secara parsial berpengaruh signifikan terhadap kepuasan pelanggan produk MS Glow. Hasil ini memberikan implikasi penting yang dapat didiskusikan. Materialisme menjadi faktor yang memiliki pengaruh dominan terhadap kepuasan pelanggan. Hasil ini membuktikan bahwa produk kecantikan dapat menjadi salah satu produk materialism bagi konsumen, karena produk kecantikan mampu memunculkan pengejaran rasa kebahagiaan bagi konsumen.

Although research generally showed that holding materialistic beliefs would lead to poor developmental outcomes, few studies have used adolescent delinquency as an outcome measure. In addition, the intervening processes between materialism and adolescent developmental outcomes are unclear. In particular, it is not clear how materialistic beliefs influence egocentrism and adolescent delinquency. Methodologically, the existing studies have several weaknesses, including small samples, cross-sectional research designs, and being limited to people living in Western cultures. Using two waves of data collected from Sichuan, China (N = 4981), we studied the predictive effect of adolescent materialism on delinquency and the mediating role of egocentrism. Over two occasions separated by six months, students aged 11 and above responded to a questionnaire evaluating adolescent materialism, egocentrism, and delinquency (mean Wave 1 age = 13.15, range between 11 and 20.38). Results of multiple regression analyses suggested that materialism at Time 1 positively predicted Time 2 egocentrism. Additionally, Time 1 materialism positively predicted the level and change in Time 2 delinquency. Finally, based on 5000 bootstrap samples with gender, age, ethnic group, and Time 1 delinquent behavior as covariates, PROCESS analyses showed that egocentrism partially mediated the influence of Time 1 materialism delinquency and its change at Time 2. This study suggests that materialistic beliefs shape egocentrism, which further strengthens adolescent delinquent behavior. This study also replicates the findings of a pioneer study in China reported previously.

Se oli varhainen ja melko yksinäinen luontoelokuvan edustaja, vaikka luonnonmaisemat olivat vastakin yhtiön elokuvissa tärkeitä. Villilintujen parissa -elokuva keskittyi luonnonvaraisten eläinten kuvaamiseen, ja se otti avoimesti kantaa luonnonsuojelun puolesta.Ajan tavan mukaan elokuva on värjätty. Elokuvan värit ovat ”itsenäisiä” siinä mielessä, että ne eivät liity kuvattujen kohteiden väreihin, vaan mustavalkoinen filmi on lopuksi kylvetetty väriliuoksessa siten, että kuvaruudut värjäytyvät yhdellä värillä kokonaisuudessaan. Eri väriset jaksot rytmittävät elokuvan kulkua. Paikoin värit saavat representatiivisia tehtäviä, mutta toteutustekniikastaan johtuen ne on myös helppo nähdä esittävästä sisällöstä irrallisina. Elokuvan tarinan ja värien käytön huipentuma on kuululla lintukosteikolla Äyräpäänjärvellä koettu joutsenten ylilento, johon latautuu tunteikkaita kulttuurisia, esteettisiä ja nationalistisia merkityksiä. The film is a rather lonely representative of early Finnish natural history film. It concentrates on birds and makes a clear stand for the protection of nature.It was common to add colouring to films at that time, and Villilintujen parissa is no exception. The colours are autonomous, that is, they are produced by dyeing the black and white film with a monochrome tone. The colours in the film may have representational functions, but they retain their independent role due to the dyeing technique. In this way, the emotional and affective functions of colour are highlighted.The makers of the film, Heikki Aho and Björn Soldan, probably knew the vitalistic theories of their time, so the thoughts of Jane Bennett, a contemporary representative of vitalistic materialism, do not seem out of place in this context. Bennett introduces the concept of enchantment by which she refers to the feelings of wonder in nature. The result can be a disappearance of borders between humans and non-human creatures. The affective boost of energy that enchantment gives is required in transforming the moral call for the protection of nature into action. The close-ups of animals and anthropomorphic narrative features produce enchantment in the film, but especially the effects of the colours strive for admiration toward nature. The narrative climax, an overflight of swans, is situated at the Lake Äyräpäänjärvi, famous for its birdlife. The scene carries various cultural, aesthetic, and ideological meanings which are accentuated by the emotional and sensual effects of the colours.The film conveys knowledge of natural environments and aims at a multi-sensuous experience of nature. Purpose The purpose of the study is to investigate consumers’ perceptions of status motivations on retailers’ sustainability efforts and whether collectivism and materialism moderate this relationship. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research methodology using survey data was used. Data were collected by administering questionnaires from millennial respondents (n = 386) from the USA and Turkey. Findings The results show that cultural value (collectivism) and materialism can serve as moderators of the effects of status motivation and sustainability. The findings indicate that the link between status motivation and sustainability perceptions (both environmental and social sustainability) is stronger for more collectivist consumers. In terms of materialism, while it did not moderate the relationship between status motivation and perceptions of environmental sustainability, it did moderate the relationship between status motivation and perceptions of social sustainability, particularly the uniqueness aspect of materialism. Research limitations/implications The stronger link between status motivation and both environmental and social sustainability for collectivists suggests that the bandwagon effect may be impacting their need for status. The stronger link between status motivation and social sustainability for those more materialistic suggests that their need for status may be more impacted by a snob effect as they want to appear unique. The use of college students is a limitation of this study, and future research needs to explore a wider range of age groups to determine if there are generational differences. Additionally, future research could examine other cultural dimensions such as power distance and masculinity versus femininity. Practical implications Findings from this research provide insights for retailers, especially those targeting the status and luxury market when developing their sustainability plans. An interest in sustainability may aid consumers in meeting their need for status, particularly for those status consumers who are more collectivist, as a means to fit in with their group. For more materialistic consumers, retailers may want to focus more on unique social sustainability efforts that are more publicly noticeable. Social implications Social sustainability, a topic not studied as frequently as environmental sustainability, has significant implications for consumers. The findings suggest that the link between status motivation and social sustainability is stronger for collectivists, suggesting a bandwagon effect. Additionally, the authors find that the link between status motivation and social sustainability is stronger for materialists, particularly the uniqueness dimension of materialism, suggesting a snob effect. Originality/value The originality of this study lies in the exploration of how status motivation impacts consumers’ perceptions of retailers’ environmental and social sustainability efforts and if these relationships are moderated by collectivism and materialism. Few studies have examined social sustainability, especially in terms of culture.

Desde a sua sistematização como ciência, a Geografia, seja através dos diferentes métodos de produção do conhecimento científico, ou das categorias e conceitos delineadores do pensamento geográfico, tem buscado a interdisciplinaridade com as diversas áreas da Geografia Física e da Geografia Humana. Tomando o método como o vetor de articulação na produção do conhecimento, o presente artigo, resultado da tese de Livre Docência, tem por objetivo refletir as inter-relações existentes entre Geografia, Natureza e Sociedade, tomando como base o materialismo histórico e dialético e o pensamento complexo na construção de uma Geografia que caminhe para a conjunção entre os saberes das áreas ambientais (Geografia Física) e das humanidades (Geografia Humana). This study investigates the path that leads materialists to purchase foreign products online. The study finds materialism's effects as bandwagon luxury consumption behaviour and perceived brand globalness. It also shows how consumer innovation affects consumer behaviour between bandwagon luxury consumption and inclination to purchase foreign luxury goods online. An online cross-sectional survey was utilized to collect data from 210 respondents who bought luxury goods from abroad in Pakistan. The findings demonstrate that Bandwagon luxury consumption patterns and brand-perceived globalness have a significant positive relationship with materialism and intention to purchase foreign luxury goods online and that Bandwagon luxury consumption patterns positively mediate this relationship. Consumer innovation significantly moderates the relationship between bandwagon luxury consumption and the propensity to purchase foreign luxury goods online. This study will be beneficial for foreign brand marketers interested in targeting Pakistani consumers through various channels and identifying bandwagon behaviour among Pakistanis

Consciousness -- pain, emotional feeling, sensory experience, and so on -- certainly exists. So materialismPM is the view that consciousness is wholly material. It has, historically, nothing to do with denial of the existence of consciousness. Its heart is precisely the claim that consciousness -- consciousness! -- is wholly material. [2] 'Physicalism', the view introduced by members of the Vienna Circle in the late 1920s, also has nothing to do with denial of the existence of consciousness. [3] Recently the words 'materialism' and 'physicalism' have come to be treated as synonymous, and as names for a position in the philosophy of mind that does involve denial of the existence of consciousness. They've been used to name a position that (i) directly rejects the heart of materialism (materialismPM) and (ii) is certainly false. This is a pity, because they're good terms for a view that is very likely true.

Previous research in the unintended effects of television advertising has been conducted largely in Western countries with little research being conducted in other setting. The results suggest that The development of people’s satisfaction with life seems to contradict the growth in materialistic consumption promoted by advertising messages. This study examined the effects of television advertising on materialistic tendencies and life satisfaction in a non-Western setting. In a first step, a conceptual model based on existing hypotheses was developed, and in a second step, this model was tested using a sample of 131 Algerian students. Usingregression analysis and structural equation modeling, the findings show that advertising exposure is positively related to materialism and negatively related to life satisfaction. The results suggest that the effects of advertising on both materialism and life satisfaction could be moderated by the extent to which advertising is perceived to be materialistic. Materialism, in turn, contributes significantly to dissatisfaction with life.

Pela ponte com o núcleo duro da Geografia Crítica (Lefebvre, Harvey e Quaini), transmutamos o debate filosófico para o campo geográfico ao mostrar as tão ignoradas raízes, lógica e vícios da Geografia Moderna. This paper aims to investigate the effects of personal characteristics such as gender, income, education and age on consumer materialism. Research hypotheses are based on both existing marketing literature and an additional integration of gender studies literature in order to further the study of materialism. By using random sampling and surveying 1000 respondents living across different regions in Lithuania, the results show significant differences along gender, age, self-perceived relative income and education in terms of consumers’ materialistic dispositions. The study confirms that younger consumers are more inclined to materialistic values than older ones. Women differ from men on materialism centrality, as well as happiness and success measures. Regarding consumers’ self-perceived relative income, Lithuanians with low income are more prone to aspire to material possessions. Furthermore, research indicates higher rates of consumer materialism to appear among less educated individuals. This is one of the first representative studies in Lithuania revealing what effects different demographic consumer characteristics have on materialistic behaviour. Our findings have some practical implications; for example, they show that vulnerable segments of the population are more susceptible to materialism, necessitating educational policies to reduce such behavior and encourage a more responsible approach. As a result, these educational programs should be tailored to these individuals, with a greater emphasis on the risks associated with overconsumption.

Although the Industrial Revolution in Britain’s Victorian era contributed significantly toward Britain’s development, it also led to the emergence of materialism issues in society. This research aims to identify how materialism was constructed and to reveal the worldview on materialism expressed in A Little Princess (2017). Goldmann’s Genetic Structuralism is operated in this qualitative research. The results indicate that the materialism issue brought some adverse impacts or social problems, such as the division of social classes, the social gap between the upper, middle, and working classes, and child labor in the Victorian age. Besides, the worldview of Burnett’s social group resisted materialism by delineating these social issues and a binary opposition between a materialistic character shown by Miss Minchin and a non-materialistic character presented by Sara. Through the binary opposition, Burnett wanted readers to be aware of the negative impacts of practicing materialistic traits such as possessiveness, envy, and non-generosity. Possessiveness is shown by Miss Minchin's desire and attitude to retain all of Sara’s luxury stuff. Envy appears in Miss Minchin's envy of Sara’s wealth and prosperity. Non-generosity as Miss Minchin hard to donate her possessions or do charity. As a human fact product, A Little Princess can be interpreted as a view to getting a better life for poor child workers at that time.

The essay looks at the challenges Australian Indigenous materialisms make to the Western concept of human and its relation to the inhuman, and it does this through reading the novels of Waanyi writer, critic, and activist Alexis Wright. In the Australian context, a highly productive knot is being tied between post-humanism and postcolonialism, such that the binary of “culture” and “nature” is understood in relation to another binary couple that sits snugly within “culture” and “nature,” and that is “colonizer” and “native.” The place of Indigenous-signed literary texts in critiques of Western materialisms cannot be underestimated. It is through the arts that most encounters between Indigenous and settler Australians take place. How non-Indigenous readers might approach these literary texts is a key ethical question with implications for new materialist and post-humanist projects.

Numerous studies have foundthatfinancial literacy may assist in averting irresponsible spending that linked to materialistic values. However, the area of knowledge that delivers financial literacy varies among studies. The study determines whether credit hours of financial courses,namely, economics, finance and accounting, affect materialism. Consequently, three moderator variables namely gender, year of study and financial sponsorship, were added into the analysis. A survey was conducted on 1022 business undergraduates in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris using money attitude scales as a proxy to measure materialism. Findings indicate that there werenodirectcorrelations between credithoursof financial courses cumulatively or individually, with materialism scores. However, when the year of studyvariable,specifically fourth-year students category, wasinserted as a moderating effect, all three financial courses credit hours were found to be negatively correlatedwith materialism score. The findings demonstrate that accounting courses credit hours affect all materialism dimensions. Meanwhile, three and two materialism dimensions negatively correlated with economic and finance courses, respectively. It indicates that final year students materialistic values lessen as particular financial courses credit hours increased. The findings may provide input to financial literacy modules to mitigateyoung-executive debt crises.

The association between attitude toward advertising and materialism was positive. The African-American respondents held more materialistic values than their Caucasian peers; they exhibited a more favorable general attitude toward advertising and held more favorable beliefs about advertising. These findings are consistent with the criticism that advertising is at least connected with materialistic values in our society.

The subject of this study is materialism, understood in the broadest sense of this concept: both as a philosophical doctrine and as a way of life corresponding to a certain worldview position. The aim is to clarify the objective role of this worldview position in various fields of human activity. At the center of the research is the question of the essence of materialistic ideas about the world hiding behind the sensually given reality to man. The study consists of two parts, published in separate articles. The first part is devoted to the origins of the materialistic worldview and the main question of philosophy, and in this, its second part, the question of the philosophical problems of non-classical physics is considered, the root of these problems is revealed, a comparative worldview analysis of the basic concepts of classical and non-classical physics is carried out and the overall result of the research is summarized. The methodology of this research is the principle of materialistic monism, according to which absolutely all phenomena of the human-cognizable world can be based only on something material, "influencing". The general conclusions of this study are as follows: the roots of the materialistic worldview go back to the origins of life, to such a condition of successful vital activity of living beings, which is inherently ideological; this condition, called by the author the Main Question of Life, is the historical forerunner of the Main Question of Philosophy; the worldview position, equivalent to the materialistic solution of the OVF, is inherent in the vital activity of absolutely all living beings; all people in their daily and practical activities are born materialists. In addition, this study clarifies the idea of the essence of materialistic teaching; shows the exclusivity of the materialistic worldview as the only true worldview; provides a refined definition of the concept of matter; proves the need to shift the "center of gravity" of modern materialistic teaching from dialectics to the principle of materialistic monism; formulates the missing requirement for scientific theories to ensure their ideological viability; shows the ideological inconsistency the main ideas of the new, non-classical physics.

El presente artículo ofrece una caracterización del materialismo antropológico de Walter Benjamin, interpretándolo como el programa teórico-político a través del cual el autor modula en un ámbito profano, concreto y materialista sus intereses metafísicos y antropológicos juveniles, con el objetivo de dotar al marxismo de nuevas perspectivas. El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es abordar el mencionado materialismo antropológico del autor, desglosándolo en cuatro zonas que, sin agotar los temas de su interés, contribuyen a dar una caracterización aproximada de sus problemáticas. La primera de esas zonas vincula el materialismo antropológico a la inauguración retrospectiva de una tradición. La segunda, establece la idea de “cuerpo colectivo” como sujeto político de dicho materialismo. La tercera, hace de este último una tentativa de redefinir las relaciones entre técnica, naturaleza y humanidad en la modernidad. La cuarta, trata de la perspectiva antropológico-materialista como un intento de redibujar los contornos de lo humano a partir de un humanismo “más real”.
