Streszczenie:
This article explores how the efficiency of Internet search is changing the way Americans find romantic partners. We use a new data source, the How Couples Meet and Stay Together survey. Results show that for 60 years, family and grade school have been steadily declining in their influence over the dating market. In the past 15 years, the rise of the Internet has partly displaced not only family and school, but also neighborhood, friends, and the workplace as venues for meeting partners. The Internet increasingly allows Americans to meet and form relationships with perfect strangers, that is, people with whom they had no previous social tie. Individuals who face a thin market for potential partners, such as gays, lesbians, and middle-aged heterosexuals, are especially likely to meet partners online. One result of the increasing importance of the Internet in meeting partners is that adults with Internet access at home are substantially more likely to have partners, even after controlling for other factors. Partnership rate has increased during the Internet era (consistent with Internet efficiency of search) for same-sex couples, but the heterosexual partnership rate has been flat.

The present research analyzed automatic self-regulation during mate searching. Specifically, we tested the hypothesis that in a dating context, individuals who are currently looking for a mate show increased automatic attention allocation (focusing effect) to faces of opposite-sex others who display signs of reciprocal romantic interest. We tested this hypothesis in a longitudinal dating study by analyzing intra-individual change in attention allocation to romantic reciprocators and non-reciprocators. Attention allocation was assessed using a visual cueing paradigm prior to and after the announcement of mutual interest in a date between two participants of the study. In line with our hypothesis, focusing effects were obtained selectively for romantic reciprocators. This focusing effect was restricted to participants with a secure attachment style, indicating interindividual differences in adaptive automatic self-regulation processes during mate searching.

Streszczenie:
In this paper we describe the mate-searching behaviour of male Corophium volutator (Pallas), an intertidal amphipod. We expected male choice of mates because males invest in mating by mate guarding, and also because adult females greatly outnumber adult males at our study site. We predicted that males would choose large females carrying many eggs and females close to moulting or close to being receptive. We found that individual males "assessed" an average of ca. 5 females in their respective burrows before entering the burrow of a prospective mate. Males were more likely to cohabit with females that were close to being receptive than with females that were far from being receptive. Over the season, the size of mate-searching males declined, whereas the number of females encountered by males increased, which may relate to the seasonal distribution of receptive females. However, there were no differences in size between paired and unpaired females regardless of time of season. Our results support mate discrimination by males based on one criterion (stage of receptivity). The proximate and ultimate causes of the biased sex ratios of C. volutator need' to be determined before other predictions based on mate-choice theory can be made.

Streszczenie:
Risks inherent in mate-searching have led to the assumption that females moving sequentially through populations of courting males are sexually receptive, but this may not be true. We examined two types of fiddler crab females: wanderers moving through the population of courting males and residents that were occupying and defending their own territories. Sometimes residents leave territories to look for new burrows and we simulated this by displacing wanderers and residents and observing their behaviour while wandering. We predicted that the displaced wanderers would exhibit more mate-searching behaviours than resident females. However, wandering and resident females behaved nearly identically, displaying mate-searching behaviours and demonstrating matching mate preferences. Also, males behaved the same way towards both female types and similar proportions of wanderers and residents stayed in a male's burrow to mate. But more wanderers than residents produced egg clutches when choosing a burrow containing a male, suggesting females should be categorized as receptive and non-receptive. Visiting and rejecting several males is not the defining feature of female mate choice. Moving across the mudflat by approaching and leaving a succession of burrows (mostly occupied by males) is an adaptive anti-predator behaviour that is useful in the contexts of mate-searching and territory-searching.

Streszczenie:
Mate-searching success is a critical precursor to mating, but there is a dearth of research on traits and tactics that confer a competitive advantage in finding potential mates. Theory and available empirical evidence suggest that males locate mates using mate-attraction signals produced by receptive females (personal information) and avoid inadvertently produced cues from rival males (social information) that indicate a female has probably already mated. Here, we show that western black widow males use both kinds of information to find females efficiently, parasitizing the searching effort of rivals in a way that guarantees competition over mating after reaching a female's web. This tactic may be adaptive because female receptivity is transient, and we show that (i) mate searching is risky (88% mortality) and (ii) a strongly male-biased operational sex ratio (from 1.2 : 1 to more than 10 : 1) makes competition inevitable. Males with access to rivals' silk trails moved at higher speeds than those with only personal information, and located females even when personal information was unreliable or absent. We show that following rivals can increase the potential for sexual selection on females as well as males and argue it may be more widespread in nature than is currently realized.

Streszczenie:
The trait complex approach (Ackerman&Heggestad, 1997) makes it possible to study the individual holistically by taking account of various individual differences at the same time, such as abilities, personality, motivation, and vocational preferences. Recently, Kanfer, Wolf, Kantrowitz, and Ackerman (2010) provided support for taking a whole-person approach in predicting academic performance. They also showed the incremental role of non-ability predictors over the role of ability predictors. Objectives of the present study were to further explore the non-ability variables of the science/math trait complex. Identifying the personality correlates of the science/math trait complex was the first objective. Investigation results yielded four personality factors as correlates of the complex, which play important roles for engineers and scientists at different stages of the vocational track: toughmindedness was the personality marker of the science/math trait complex and was associated with intending to pursue a STEM career; achievement and control were associated with academic success in STEM majors; and cognitively-oriented behavior was associated with more cognitively challenging pursuits, such as attending STEM competitions and planning to go on to graduate school. The second purpose was to revisit the vocational interests associated with the science/math trait complex and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) groups. A new measure was introduced, referred to as STEM Interest Complexity, which measures interests towards engaging in increasingly complex tasks in the Numerical, Symbolic, Spatial, and STEM-related Ideas domains. It was developed to assess the level of vocational interests, in addition to the traditionally assessed direction of vocational interests (Holland, 1985). Validation of the new STEM Interest Complexity measure showed adequate construct and concurrent criterion-related validities. Construct validity was established by demonstrating associations between the new measure and measures of the direction of interests, cognitive abilities, intelligence as personality, and learning goal orientations. Support for the new measure's criterion-related validity was found by demonstrating that the measure discriminates between majors, and predicts vocational criteria (i.e., college achievement in STEM, attachment to STEM fields, major satisfaction, and one's intentions to chose a complex STEM career). With dominance analyses, it was shown that STEM Interest Complexity was the most important vocational assessment in the prediction of criteria. Results support the assertion that vocational interest inventories can be improved by incorporating the level of complexity dimension. Finally, a science/math trait complex composite score, including the personality factors and STEM Interest Complexity, in addition to the previously determined ability, interest, and self-concept associates, showed moderate associations with STEM-related vocational criteria. The non-ability individual differences, which were the focus of the present study, added to the conceptualization and predictive utility of the science/math trait complex.

Streszczenie:
The crania from a mass grave associated to the Battle of Good Friday (1520) in Uppsala were re-examined in this study. The total skeletal material has been analysed before, but blunt force trauma was excluded and therefore a comprehensive trauma pattern could not be presented. In the current study, the perimortem cranial weapon-related trauma was examined by reconstructing the crania and conducting a trauma analysis. Standardised methods were used to identify and document blunt, sharp and puncture trauma. The results reveal that new blunt and sharp force trauma as well as one puncture trauma could be identified. Furthermore, the majority of weapon-related trauma were identified as sharp injuries, less than ten percent as blunt injuries and a few as puncture injuries. The cranial trauma pattern is interpreted to reflect the battle tactics, the situations in the battle, as well as the armour and weapons used by the soldiers. The notion of sharp force injuries forming the majority of trauma could imply that bladed weapons were used the most and blunt weapons were used less or caused less injuries visible on bone. The dominance of cranial trauma might indicate that head was a primary target. The trauma pattern implies that blunt weapons were used at least in face-to-face combat and bladed weapons were used in a variety of situations from face-to-face fight to more chaotic situations and against fleeing soldiers. Most of the new documented injuries were observable or easier to observe during or after the cranial reconstruction, indicating that reconstructing the crania is important for observing and identifying the maximal number of injuries possible.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This research paper set out to discover whether a Christian Spiritual perspective (within a framework of a theology of affirmation and a psychological strengths perspective of fortigenesis) on basic threatening existential issues, such as HIV/AIDS Stigma, Homophobia, etc. can help MSM to reformulate the quest for meaning and be integrated in a holistic approach to spiritual healing in order to overcome the schism in HIV/AIDS: Friend or Foe? Setting the stage for exploring the world‟s worst global challenge within the health sector, and how it relates to the South African context for MSM. The research uncovered that MSM face the greatest challenge and burden of HIV/AIDS in many countries, however little research has focused on MSM and HIV/AIDS in South Africa. Literature links this to the fact that throughout Africa, the predominant view of same sex relationships as being un-African, sinful and an abomination. Pointing out that for MSM, the development of God-images usually occurs during the process of growth and maturation as an individual, where a multitude of experiences are based primarily through the filter of belonging to a minority, which are seen predominantly from society as being sinful. The possible multitude of traumatic and often fearful life experiences, including the potentially highly stressful and difficult process of informing their parents and families of their sexuality, may influence their emotional experience and ultimately their God-image. The God-image of parental love, acceptance and caring may be impacted on by fear of rejection and the lack of acceptance. The development of ambivalence may strongly impact on MSM God-images, resulting in conflicted experiences and understanding of God, where the God-image could become distant and judgmental (Hoffman, 2009:15-18). Something that is exacerbated by the stance of some belief systems promote the concept of “love the sinner, hate the sin”, which only results in MSM being ignored or having their partners/relationships rejected, thus isolating them within their own faith community. This impacts their spiritual/religious development and their participation in a non-affirming faith community can result in levels of increased internalized homonegativity (this is defined as negative attitudes to one‟s own homosexuality), causing poorer psychological health and lower self-regard. The dignity, identity and meaning of MSM are further impacted on by their minority existence within the context of South Africa, which places various traumatic stresses on MSM. These traumatic stresses are amplified by the constant negotiation of fear regarding the contracting of HIV/AIDS or even being diagnosed with the life threatening disease. Despite all these external and the resultant internal stressors, Graham and Kiguwa (2005) found that religion and spirituality is important to MSM-youth as it provides possible supportive structures and environments. Many of the MSM-youth believe in the Bible or ancestors (or even both), yet have chosen to adapt their beliefs by taking what was important for them from the Bible and ancestral belief systems. This they have done as the traditional view of religion and the Bible held by most people, where the scriptures are taken literally, is that homosexuality is a sin (Graham and Kiguwa, 2005:7-8). Within this research, the interviewees experienced all this; however the results also showed that all the participants found some beneficial aspects out of contracting HIV/AIDS, with various levels of meanings relating to a sense of growth for each interviewee, while 4 out of 5 indicated that spirituality played an important role in assisting them in improving their lives. It aided in helping them to develop a sense of connection to themselves and others, something that many felt was missing within their lives. They felt that if it hadn‟t been for HIV, they would not have increased their levels of spirituality. This is an important empirical finding with respect to the research question and hypothesis, which hypothesized that HIV/AIDS promoted changes within MSM that results in spiritual growth and the development of internal strengths that allow them to transcend above the stressor of HIV/AIDS. The idea that MSM experience spirituality as something helpful and essential, makes it important to note that comments in the empirical research indicated that they tended to believe that if a Higher Power is involved, that it is unconditionally loving, kind and friendly. This is an important description of a God image within Christian Spirituality, a possible God-image of a Partner for Life or Friend. Thus, for Christian Spirituality to play a role within the healing of MSM and to better enhance spirituality and lay a better spiritual foundation, and develop better internal strengths and existential states, it thus becomes important to explore how Christian Spirituality will be able to address these needs of MSM, within a theological framework of affirmation.

Torsekar, Viraj R. "Ecology of predator-prey interactions in the context of mate searching". Thesis, 2019. https://etd.iisc.ac.in/handle/2005/4582.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Animals communicating in the context of mate searching benefit by increasing their likelihood of encountering mates. Mate searching begins the important process of individuals of opposite sexes forming pairs, which is necessary for achieving mating success and improving their chances of attaining reproductive success. But mate searching individuals also experience costs of being conspicuous to unintended receivers such as eavesdropping predators. Prey respond to and manage such predation risk by typically reducing activity or moving away from the risk. Such alteration in behaviour can have potential costs on foraging and mating opportunities. Costs of such behavioural management of risk on an ecological timescale have been studied extensively in the foraging context but have not received enough attention in the reproduction context. Hence, my thesis aims at understanding the ecology of predator-prey interactions in the context of mate searching, using the tree cricket Oecanthus henryi as a model system. I first estimated the relative predation risk experienced by communicating and noncommunicating, male and female crickets from their primary predators, green lynx spiders, at multiple spatial scales. I then manipulated predation risk in enclosure experiments and observed how it affects communication and survival, to compare their relative fitness consequences. Finally, I examined how crickets and spiders use space at two different spatial scales, in order to explore whether crickets behaviourally manage the risk they experience while searching for mates. Before observing how prey respond to predation risk, it is important to estimate what risk they face in nature. And since mate searching typically has two strategies of pair formation, including signalling and responding to signals, with each generating different cues, it is vital to know whether the risk these strategies face are different. Hence, I estimated predation risk of mate searching in natural cricket populations, at multiple spatial scales at which predators and prey interact with each other. I partitioned predation risk into constituent probabilities of prey cooccurring, encountering and being eaten by their predator. Each probability was estimated separately for mate-searching males and females and compared with males and females not motivated to search for mates, as controls. Predation risk was found to be similar across all comparisons, suggesting that mate searching in O. henryi does not face costs from predation. Another result of estimating predation risk was that probability of mortality from predation was observed to be very low at a within-night timescale. Although low, crickets could potentially perceive this risk to be either large, or maybe even negligible. Hence, to explore how crickets respond to predation risk in the context of mate searching, I manipulated predation risk and observed differences in mate searching behaviour in male and female crickets, and their survival. Mating success of individuals was also recorded to investigate whether modification of matesearching behaviour and survival bears fitness consequences. This experiment was conducted inside field enclosures and predation risk was manipulated by varying cricket-spider ratios inside the enclosure. Males altered mate-searching behaviours including likelihood of calling, calling effort and likelihood of movement whereas female mate searching behaviour remained unaffected with changing predation risk. Survival for both was strongly affected. Finally, in addition to survival of both male and female crickets affecting their mating success, male likelihood to move also negatively affected mating success. Hence, varying predation risk does affect mate searching in O. henryi males as they shift from calling to moving, and this shift has negative fitness consequences. In addition, males and females differ in their response to predation risk even though the risk they face in the field is similar. Since male crickets’ management of predation risk has adverse fitness consequences, I was interested in investigating whether crickets can instead manage predation risk by controlling their spatial distribution and potentially move away from predators. Hence, I studied space use patterns of predators and prey at two spatial scales: broad scale or across bushes and fine scale or within bushes. I hypothesised that fine scale evasion of spiders by crickets will depend on their broad scale overlap with spiders. I found that at the broad scale, space use by spiders is not affected by the presence or absence of crickets on the bush. Hence, at the fine scale, I expected crickets, regardless of their mate searching strategy, to exhibit similar predator evasion movement behaviour. Instead, both calling and non-calling males turned more towards spiders on average, when close to the spiders, whereas responding and non-responding females moved the same when a spider was present or absent. Males, predicted to be the more risk-taking sex, could be inspecting predators to gather information on spider location. Therefore, cricket space use at the fine scale appears to be driven by the sex and context of the individual, rather than their spatial overlap with spiders at the broad scale.

While looking back, it is all the fragments that interwoven with my teaching career; a self-dialect and reflection. Moreover, it is a self-analysis of my own intention and reaction. The shifting roles from being a regular teacher to a special class teacher has aroused myself various reactions and feelings. Therefore, I would like to review all my own teaching process and deconstruct it. Through the intercommunication between the “text-selfness” and “actual-selfness,” it offer an opportunity for my own retrospection and dialogue. And further, a power of self-encouragement may thus produce to construct “a road of being a teacher.” The paper aims to explore, collect and categorize my result from my own experience of “learning to become a teacher.” By the self-narrative approach to data collection, and then to phase my theme in to six stages: a. “the commencement: trying to begin my teaching career;” b. “Being an earnest teacher without knowing my will and future plan;” c. “ The teaching process goes on smoothly and commonly;” d. “Return my old duty with the shifting condition;” e. “ A new beginning with active power;” f. “ the mature period of knowing when and how to let go.” During the whole process of my learning to become a teacher faces several issues: a. the pursuit of personal accomplishment, self-recognition of existence and the desire for power and control. My students taught me lot and influenced me the most. They let me have a chance to practice my philosophy of education, allow me to learn and grow from the mistakes.

The aim of this paper is the evolution of system safety approach in aviation, which consists in three main research areas: technical factors, human factors and organizational factors. As the airline traffic has risen rapidly in the last years, in countries around the world, there is a need to employ new methods and programs to drive down accident rates. Related to safety, major airlines have employed programs and activities to ward off accidents, in order to make better their records. This difficulty to assess the risk focuses in searching an equilibrium between reality and measurements and also in deciding which settlements have to be made, to reach the objectives.

Streszczenie:
This rapid review was sourced from key websites and used some keyword searching whilst making an effort to filter out news and media. As systematic searching is not possible within the scope of this review, it cannot be considered a comprehensive listing of activity in the area of vaccine rollout. It is also likely that initiatives and support are occurring which are unpublished. This report should, therefore, be considered a snapshot of activity in this area. It comprises a list of what was found and cannot make assertions about inactivity based on what was not found. The question asked for ‘initiatives’ to be identified, and it has been interpreted broadly. The search identified reports describing support for rollouts, published guidelines, frameworks, calls to action and opinion pieces. The information is organised by institution type. Often information was in the form of a news piece or blog rather than formal documentation, as the situation is current and unfolding and recent information is only available in this type of media. Vaccine passports were outside of the scope of this review.

Hutchinson, M. L., J. E. L. Corry i R. H. Madden. A review of the impact of food processing on antimicrobial-resistant bacteria in secondary processed meats and meat products. Food Standards Agency, październik 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.bxn990.

Streszczenie:
For meat and meat products, secondary processes are those that relate to the downstream of the primary chilling of carcasses. Secondary processes include maturation chilling, deboning, portioning, mincing and other operations such as thermal processing (cooking) that create fresh meat, meat preparations and ready-to-eat meat products. This review systematically identified and summarised information relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) during the manufacture of secondary processed meatand meat products (SPMMP). Systematic searching of eight literature databases was undertaken and the resultantpapers were appraised for relevance to AMR and SPMMP. Consideration was made that the appraisal scores, undertaken by different reviewers, were consistent. Appraisal reduced the 11,000 initially identified documents to 74, which indicated that literature relating to AMR and SPMMP was not plentiful. A wide range of laboratory methods and breakpoint values (i.e. the concentration of antimicrobial used to assess sensitivity, tolerance or resistance) were used for the isolation of AMR bacteria. The identified papers provided evidence that AMR bacteria could be routinely isolated from SPMMP. There was no evidence that either confirmed or refuted that genetic materials capable of increasing AMR in non-AMR bacteria were present unprotected (i.e. outside of a cell or a capsid) in SPMMP. Statistical analyses were not straightforward because different authors used different laboratory methodologies. However, analyses using antibiotic organised into broadly-related groups indicated that Enterobacteriaceaeresistant to third generation cephalosporins might be an area of upcoming concern in SPMMP. The effective treatment of patients infected with Enterobacteriaceaeresistant to cephalosporins are a known clinical issue. No AMR associations with geography were observed and most of the publications identified tended to be from Europe and the far east.AMR Listeria monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria could be tolerant to cleaning and disinfection in secondary processing environments. The basis of the tolerance could be genetic (e.g. efflux pumps) or environmental (e.g. biofilm growth). Persistent, plant resident, AMR L. monocytogenes were shown by one study to be the source of final product contamination. 4 AMR genes can be present in bacterial cultures used for the manufacture of fermented SPMMP. Furthermore, there was broad evidence that AMR loci could be transferred during meat fermentation, with refrigeration temperatures curtailing transfer rates. Given the potential for AMR transfer, it may be prudent to advise food business operators (FBOs) to use fermentation starter cultures that are AMR-free or not contained within easily mobilisable genetic elements. Thermal processing was seen to be the only secondary processing stage that served as a critical control point for numbers of AMR bacteria. There were significant linkages between some AMR genes in Salmonella. Quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) resistance genes were associated with copper, tetracycline and sulphonamide resistance by virtue of co-location on the same plasmid. No evidence was found that either supported or refuted that there was any association between AMR genes and genes that encoded an altered stress response or enhanced the survival of AMR bacteria exposed to harmful environmental conditions.
