This paper assesses disparities in the use of mass media among the youth population in Nepal. Data for this cross-sectional analysis were extracted from the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey undertaken in 2016. The total sample of 8,010 included four population sub-groups – single and married males, and single and married females, ages 15-24. The forms of mass media assessed included reading the newspaper, watching TV, listening to the radio, or using the internet. Binary logistic multiple regression was applied to assess the net effects of covariates on the use of specific forms of mass media. Of the four types of mass media, TV was the most commonly used (52%), and newspaper and internet were the least used (14%). Radio was used by 34%. Any of the four types of mass media was used by 72%, while only 1% of youth used all four types. Household wealth status, followed by the educational background of the youth and their region of residence, were the main factors significantly and strongly correlated with the disparity in mass media use. Compared to single or married males or single females, married females were the least likely to use any of the forms of mass media. The results show that despite rapid growth in mass media over the last 25 years in Nepal, great disparities still persist in the current use of mass media among the youth population, particularly based on gender and marital status. The findings underscore the need for media-based interventions to be sensitive to both the gaps related to gender and marital status among the youth population in Nepal.

In this article the impact of the political unrest in the mid-1980s on the political consciousness of the Afrikaner student youth is investigated. Through a panel study of students of the Rand Afrikaans University in Johannesburg, South Africa, trends in exposure to political events were established. Exposure occurs through direct political participation, political discourse or through the mass media. The important role of the mass media for exposure of these youths is illuminated. Attention is also focused on which media are utilised for obtaining political information. The political implications of this exposure are considered. Mass-media have powerful influence on characteristics and development of contemporary societies. Modern societies are characterized by different varieties of violence as un-human social and anthropological behavior patterns of different societies and as shapes of social pathology. Media are the most significant mediator between sport and men of modern societies particularly of young people. Violence, as on expression of aggressive behavior, is not just a consequence of global society and mass-media influence on audience (especially hooligans), but it is developing as a consequence of socialization of personality. Youth violence is also a consequence of mass-media influence on young people's education. Children and youth are especially sensitive to violence in mass-media.

Analysing youth aggression topic in the press, it is noted that only statistics of youth aggression cases revealed in the public space is represented. There are no records reflecting the real situation. In this instance, the mass media, which is controlling the thoughts of society, has mostly influence to public attitude formation on youth aggression question. It is often based on stereotypes and myths, in that way representing the vision of distorted reality. The aim of this paper is to ascertain how is represented youth aggression topic in the mass media, and what is its formed image of inseparable from aggression informal groups of young people such as ultras (extreme football fans) and skinheads (nationalist attitude). After having analysed the numbers of daily newspaper Lietuvos rytas (January–December of 2011), 99 articles on youth aggression topic were detected. It is noted, that there are no articles about aggression of young people living in the wealthy and rich families. So the mass media is forming a view, that youth aggression mostly occurs in asocial families, whereas in wealthy families this problem simply does not exist. With regard to the portrayal of youth aggression in Lietuvos rytas, as well as paying attention to the fact that trust in the mass media in Lithuania goes up to 70 percent, we can state that readers form themselves a distorted vision of reality. The most common youth aggression cases represented in the mass media are − younger or peer sexual abuse, as well as a large demonstration of transaggression - aggression used to achieve the objective. Most of the images published in the press are attributed to anger aggression and aggressors are depicted as asocial, intoxicating substances tend to use young people. Analysing Lietuvos rytas (2011), as well as reviewing other newspapers (Lietuvos rytas (2007, 2008), Lietuvos Aidas (2008), Merkio kraštas (2011)) in search of information on Lithuania‘s ultras and skinheads formed image, we have to state that public opinion towards ultras and skinheads is formed mostly not by personal experience (communication, confrontation with them), but by mass media which is the main source of information absorbed by members of the society.

The purpose of this study is to explore the active and passive usage of the Javanese language by youths aged 10 to 17 in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Conducted in the province's five territorial units of Bantul Regency, Sleman Regency, Kulon Progo Regency, Gunung Kidul Regency, and Yogyakarta City, the specific objective is to determine the extent to which children and adolescents use mass media — particularly television, radio, and social media — as instruments to access contents in Javanese. It is crucial to examine how the constant flow of information affects their exposure to Javanese on various platforms as well as their use of the language on social media This quantitative study surveyed 330 elementary, junior high, and senior high school students from both public and private schools in the province’s rural and urban areas. Similarly, despite its popularity, social media has yet to be used to the maximum by Yogyakarta youth to access content in Javanese or as a means to express the language — a setback created by the dominance of the Indonesian language.

Mass media interventions are among the strategies recommended for youth cigarette smoking prevention, but little is known about optimal methods for reaching diverse youth audiences. Grades 4 through 12 samples of youth from four states ( n = 1,230) rated smoking-prevention messages in classroom settings. Similar proportions of African American, Hispanic, and White youth participated. Impact of audience characteristics on message appeal ratings was assessed to provide guidance for audience segmentation strategies. Age had a strong effect on individual message appeal. The effect of gender also was significant. Message ratings were similar among the younger racial/ethnic groups, but differences were found for older African American youth. Lower academic achievement was associated with lower appeal scores for some messages. Age should be a primary consideration in developing and delivering smoking-prevention messages to youth audiences. The unique needs of boys and girls and older African American adolescents should also be considered.

The need for security is one of the basic human needs, and it occupies one of the basic places in the hierarchy of human motivation. Since prehistoric times, the human community and individuals, first in harmony with nature, and then with social challenges, have developed solutions and responses to challenges and threats to their survival, existence and development. As human society has progressed in its development, new challenges and threats to both individual and collective security have progressively emerged. In today's age and in modern society, there has been a paradoxical situation, that we have an exponentially increased number of security risks, and that the security culture, or the culture of security of life, has practically disappeared from the culture. The reasons are complex, and there are many factors in that chain. One of the most important factors is the media, especially the mass media, which in most aspects determine social consciousness, especially among adolescents and young people. The aim of this paper is to investigate the correlation between media, public discourse and adolescent culture, mechanisms of media action, as well as ways in which these mechanisms can be directed towards better performance of socially useful functions, of which encouraging the development of security culture awareness is one of the key tasks for the common good.

Streszczenie:
The article reveals the role of the institute of mass media in the processes of formation of political consciousness and socio-political guidelines of modern youth. The formation of political consciousness and behavior of modern youth takes place in the context of the growing mobilization component of the global network, that is, the «mediatization» and «Internetization» of social life. These processes are characterized, on the one hand, by the growing interdependence of the world community in all spheres of life, primarily political, economic, and cultural ones, and, on the other hand, by the formation of a global media structure of these relations, connecting individual societies into a single system. The rapidly changing space of the Internet determines the specific vector of the socialization process of Russian youth. The analysis showed that the processes of Internetization and spread of modern information and communication technologies contribute to a significant increase in the effectiveness of interaction with the youth segment and social transformation. Therefore, not only the process of studying the behavior of the young generation in the context of the development of network technologies becomes relevant, but also the development of relevant tools and mechanisms for conducting political and public discussions in the conditions of politics mediatization, as well as more active and widespread inclusion of Russian youth in state construction. Modern processes of informatization of society and education have exacerbated the problem of information security of the individual in the educational environment. Propaganda of extremism and terrorism in social networks, the increasing negative role of prohibited information on the Internet, manipulation of the consciousness and behavior of the younger generation, and the lack of censorship of a significant part of the information space remain a social issue. It is justified that media educational technologies aimed at increasing media literacy of young citizens contribute to the implementation of their socio-political subjectivity and initiative in the interests of the state and civil society. The state should develop productive mechanisms of public control over the formation of spiritual values that meet the national interests of the country, the education of patriotism and civil responsibility for its fate.

Cross sectional and nationally representative sample drawn from Nepal Adolescent and Youth Survey 2011, this paper attempts to examine the correlates associated with knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among young population in Nepal. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate analyses have been used to examine the correlates associated with the knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases among youths. Bivariate analysis reveals that education, mass media exposure, mother’s education, marital status, ecological belts and regions are significantly associated (p<0.001). However, multivariate analysis shows that education and mass media exposure are the strong factors (p<0.001) associated with knowledge of at least one STD among youths after controlling others variables in the model. A special attention should be given to girls’ education particularly for the rural, remote and interior parts of the country. In addition, IEC through mass media may be an immediate action to improve the level of knowledge and awareness about STDs among youths in Nepal. Mass communication media technologies influence the structuring of reality, consolidation of value systems, and construction of common social denominators, and thus contribute to the formation of personal and national identities. While, as Edward Said has shown, mainstream Western (including Israeli) media have been dominated by Orientalist, anti-Arab/anti-Islamic perspectives, new media technologies have opened up a broad range of media options lying beyond the reach of Western media's hegemonic presentations. This article explores the use of new mass communication media technologies and their association with identity formation in connection with Bedouin Arab high schools in the Negev, Israel. The findings of this research indicate that Negev Bedouin Arab youth developed diversified patterns of mass media consumption. They also show a preference for Arab media sources. Media consumption patterns are related to their national and civic identities. The findings also indicate that Bedouin Arab youth have a stronger Palestinian national identity than Israeli civic identity.

Based on the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the data obtained, it is concluded that in the structure of social ideas about the trust of Syrian youth in QMS, cognitive components predominate, followed by behavioral components, and then emotional components. It was revealed that the content ideas of Syrian youth about the media are “News”; "A television"; "Journalism"; "Facebook"; "Internet". The most noticeable elements entering the structure of social ideas about the media are “Propaganda”; "Advertising"; "Live"; "Social media"; "Entertainment"; "Radio"; "Information". In general, the media are perceived positively, assessed as necessary for obtaining news and information, playing an entertainment role and at the same time having great powers of manipulation and propaganda. It has been determined that in order to increase media trust in Syria, it is necessary to take measures to combat fake news and disinformation, improve the transparency and responsibility of media organizations, which leads to the restoration of trust in the media – a necessary condition for a healthy democracy and an informed society.

Abstract This article examines the potential of screen media to disrupt the negative social images of African American youth projected in mainstream culture. Black youth in America have historically been negatively misrepresented and misread within our society through mass-mediated images on television and film. The “negative social imagery” of African American youth across media continues to contribute to their marginalization and plight within society. Recent scholarship suggests that problematic values and behaviors of inner-city Black youth—violence, hypermasculinity, misogyny, drug addiction, educational failure, unemployment—is attributed to their near-total immersion in the mainstream mass media. This supports the notion of “they will be what they see.” But what if we offer them something different? Something more positive? Something within a Black cultural history rooted in a strong tradition and legacy. Drawing from such social media platforms as YouTube and Vimeo, in conjunction with ethnographic fieldwork and music analysis, this study investigates the potentially positive outcomes of presenting an alternative representation of Black youth through a jazz tradition that extends back to the great Buddy Bolden. Recreating the image of African American youth requires a multidimensional paradigmatic shift, disrupting mythological narratives that invoke further harm and misconceptions. To successfully redirect this pathology, I draw on Tyrone Howard, Terry Flennaugh, and Clarence Terry's (2012) lead and incorporate the views, ideas, and perspectives of the Black males themselves in re-creating their own mediated images. This project offers a model suggesting a more profound and critical approach to narratives, histories, and ethnographies of African American youth across screen media.

The article is devoted to the formation features of the civic consciousness among the youth in mass culture and media communications. Civil self-consciousness is represented through a system of personal values, a person's ideas about himself as a citizen, as well as about the state and society where he belongs and in relation to which he is self-determined. The purpose of the article is to present how the youth consumes the mass culture products and socio-political media content in the context of the formation process of their civic consciousness. The design of an empirical study is based on the principles of a political and psychological approach. The empirical basis of the research is the materials of the All-Russian survey of the youth aged 18 to 30 years, conducted in 2020 using the formalized interview procedure (n = 1600) and the in-depth interview method (n = 200), as well as the materials of the expert survey (n = 20). The materials reveal attitudes of the youth to printed publications, television content, Internet resources, film products, fiction, musical compositions, perception characteristics of the presented socio-political information. The character of media consumption among the youth is determined by the values of freedom and autonomy, justice, truth and truthfulness, and trust in information sources that are significant for them. The lack of critical thinking skills necessary for processing and analyzing a huge array of information determines their primitive perception of the political, the inability to identify political plots and political problems presented in the works of mass culture, a high degree of reactivity to the appearance of various media products. The civic consciousness formation of the youth becomes “broken” and fragmented under the influence of the media space as a factor of political socialization.

Theory-driven, mass media interventions prevent smoking among youth. This study examined effects of a media campaign on adolescent smoking cessation. Four matched pairs of media markets in four states were randomized to receive or not receive a 3-year television/radio campaign aimed at adolescent smoking cessation based on social cognitive theory. The authors enrolled 2,030 adolescent smokers into the cohort ( n = 987 experimental; n = 1,043 comparison) and assessed them via annual telephone surveys for 3 years. Although the condition by time interaction was not significant, the proportion of adolescents smoking in the past month was significantly lower in the experimental than comparison condition at 3-year follow-up when adjusted for baseline smoking status. The media campaign did not impact targeted mediating variables. A media campaign based on social cognitive constructs produced a modest overall effect on smoking prevalence among adolescents, but the role of theory-based constructs is unclear.

For a comparative analysis, three words were used, the factors of popularity of which are political propaganda, the frequent use of the word in a certain youth magazine and the widespread prevalence of the word on the Internet. A wave-like dynamics of an increase in the frequency of the word, which has become popular thanks to publications in the youth media, has been revealed: matured readers of the magazine, after 20-25 years, begin to actively use the word introduced into their vocabulary by the authors of the publications. The question is raised about the significance of the mass media for the dynamics of changes in the vocabulary of the language. A method has been developed to prove the influence of the mass media on the dynamics of changes in the vocabulary using the tools of quantitative linguistics. The history of the frequency of use of the analyzed words in the Russian language allows us to speak about the importance of youth mass media as determining the worldview and linguistic picture of the world of the text. Moreover, for other words in which the frequency correlates with the historical setting, the contexts of use themselves indicate the connection of the increased frequency with the personality of a particular publicist or writer and with the texts he generates.

The article is devoted to the study of media literacy skills of young people. On the one hand, theoretical studies of the issue are taken as a basis, and on the other hand, the practical understanding of media literacy that has developed among young people and is reflected here as a result of a sociological survey of schoolchildren aged 10-18 and students aged 18-29. In contemporary studies there is a certain lack of a single definition for media literacy and an integrated approach to this concept from the point of view of interdisciplinary research is in demand. Generally, media literacy include abilities to read and write; to distinguish fake from the truth and check facts; to distinguish opinions from facts; to recognize the emotional background of the message; to think critically; to evaluate the message in terms of the opposition «good – bad». This work results in establishing the following priority: for schoolchildren the ability to evaluate mass media content in terms of the opposition «good – bad» and for students the ability to think critically.

The paper is devoted to the description of the results of a sociological research, which was conducted for the empirical verification of the hypothesis about the transformation of videoblogs into an alternative of mass media for representatives of Russian youth. An analysis of recent scientific literature in the area sociology of youth leads author to the conclusion that discussions about the transformation of video blogs into an actual analogue of traditional mass media for representatives of Russian youth have become quite common in current research practice. But at the same time the degree of substantiation of this idea remains not entirely clear: the inclination of young people to treat videoblogs as a substitute for traditional media is often described only speculatively and does not correlate with specific empirical data. Trying to take a step in overcoming this problem, the author uses the data of his own research, carried out in early 2020 on the basis of the Ural Federal University. The key conclusion of the author’s analysis is that it is somewhat premature to talk about videoblogs as a ready-made alternative to traditional media for young people. Although such services are popular among young people, they are perceived primarily as entertainment tools and only few see them as an important source of information.

The paper addresses the issue of attitudes to religion and, in particular, to Russian Orthodoxy, of the Russian youth with the focus on the effects of secular and religious mass media. Both religion and media are integral parts of social interaction, with mediatization taking shape challenging Orthodox media. The research used qualitative survey methodology to grasp students’ attitudes. It showed that the informative activities of Russian Orthodox media have an insignificant effect. The main sources from which the youth gets specific information about the church are federal and regional media. But it would be too preliminary to conclude that student youth is a lost generation for the Russian Orthodox Church, as only a tiny fraction of young people call themselves Orthodox. This implies that not only the mediatization, but rather atheism or not-observance plays a major role in student indifference. A content analysis of top local media outlets of Saint Petersburg on the issue of the church activities coverage shows that providing news and information is one-sided and weak in secular media. The distorted image of the Russian Orthodox Church in secular media pushes the youth away from confessional media. Thus, the youth remains doubtful when the latter is concerned, and are trapped in secular media bias.

The aim of the study is a comprehensive analysis of the main directions of optimizing the system of political socialization of young people in the context of the development of the electronic media environment. The article identifies and reveals the main problems of the influence of media information flows on the formation of socio-political orientations of young citizens. The mass media were and remain the most important institution of political socialization of the younger generation, having a direct influence on the assimilation of social norms by young citizens, the formation of political values among them and, as a result, the expression by the younger generation of various forms of socio-political activity. An assessment of the role of the media in the political socialization of modern Russian youth showed that the activities of traditional media in the Russian political space are noticeably lost in relation to electronic media resources. In the digital age, it is advisable to assess the possibilities of the influence of various digital media channels on the political consciousness and behavior of young people. The conclusion is justified that young people are not only an object, but also a subject of political socialization. Under the influence of the media environment, this process is increasingly not vertical, but horizontal in nature, when young citizens demonstrate alternative forms of socio-political activity and models of political behavior — from electronic elections to the signing of online petitions, as well as continuously choose from possible images of the world thanks to the activities of electronic media, etc. Electronic media, especially network media, are largely responsible for initiating models of socio-political activity of young citizens. Based on a large factual material, the author considers the media preferences of young citizens when exposed to traditional, electronic and online media. The role of Internet socialization of youth in the activation of institutional forms of its participation in the democratization of Russian society is justified.

Abstract Introduction Approximately 25% of youth in the United States speak a language other than English at home. These youth may have less exposure to English-speaking media, including public smoking prevention initiatives such as the FDA’s “The Real Cost” campaign. Research is needed to explore potential gaps in the reach of “The Real Cost” campaign among bilingual youth. Aims and Methods Data were pooled from the 2017–2019 National Youth Tobacco Surveys. Participants were n = 12 803 middle and high school students who were either: (1) susceptible never smokers; or (2) ever smokers that had smoked less than 100 cigarettes; these criteria reflect the FDA’s definition of “target population” for “The Real Cost” campaign. Multiple, logistic regression analyses examined the relationship between speaking a language other than English at home (ie, bilingual) and self-reported exposure to “The Real Cost” campaign among both samples. Analyses controlled for sex, race/ethnicity, grade level, tobacco marketing exposure, and current tobacco use. Results The majority (61.7%) of youth who met “target population” criteria self-reported exposure to “The Real Cost” from 2017 to 2019. Regression analyses found that youth who reported speaking a language other than English at home were significantly less likely to self-report exposure to “The Real Cost” campaign (adjusted odds ratio: 0.85; p < .001), adjusting for covariates. Conclusions Bilingual youth were significantly less likely to report exposure to “The Real Cost” campaign. Findings suggest the need to develop methods of increasing reach among bilingual youth, given the high smoking prevalence among these youth. Implications This study highlights a social and cultural gap in the reach of the FDA’s “The Real Cost” campaign. Agencies such as FDA should consider enhancing existing mass media campaigns to reach diverse communities, including the nearly 25% of youth who speak a language other than English.

The article presents an analysis of the role of mass communications in the formation of modern political culture of youth. The topic is particularly relevant in the light of events on the world political arena: redistribution of spheres of influence and change of the balance of power. Also of great importance is the development of information technologies and emergence of more and more options and forms of mass communication, as well as increase in the number of information flows. In this regard, the question of how a modern person can navigate them becomes quite rational. And how not to get under negative influence? The study is theoretical in nature. The purpose of the article is to consider the role of modern mass communications in the political culture of young people. The author has analyzed a significant amount of scientific literature. The materials for writing the article were the world’s leading and Russian studies on political culture and media competence. As a result of the work done, a fairly detailed description of modern youth political culture was obtained, and the place of media competence in it was determined.
