Streszczenie:
Understanding patterns of species richness is a major goal for ecologists, especially in space-limited habitats where many organisms live on top of others (epibiosis, e.g. by algae growing on gastropods in marine environments). We tested the hypotheses that species richness of epiflora on the gastropod Turbo torquatus would not differ between regions with similarly rich algal floras, and that epifloral richness would increase with increasing gastropod size. Macroalgal floras of Hamelin Bay (HB), Marmion (M), Jurien Bay (JB) and Kalbarri (K), Western Australia, ranged from ∼20 to 40 species reef–1 (JB = HB = M ≥ K). Epiflora on small T. torquatus (shell area <150 cm2) did not differ among regions but epifloral richness increased with increasing basibiont size. Large T. torquatus (>150 cm2) were only found in Hamelin Bay and Marmion, where epifloral richness differed substantially. Epifloral richness was positively related to basibiont size in Marmion but not in Hamelin Bay. However, densities of patellid limpets on large T. torquatus were ∼4× higher in Hamelin Bay than in Marmion, implying that limpet grazing suppresses epifloral richness. Epifloral richness on turbinids is not simply associated with regional species pools or gastropod size; rather, biological interactions at the scale of individual basibionts apparently govern broad scale patterns of epibiosis.

Streszczenie:
John Edmond was a geochemist the unifying theme of whose research was a quantitative understanding of the processes involved in the transfer of the chemical elements into and out of the oceans; in short, what controls ocean chemistry. He achieved this through oceanographic explorations sampling ocean waters for rare metals and explorations of hot springs on the deep sea floor, rivers from the Amazon to Siberia, and the rift valley lakes of Africa. This accompanied a strong background in chemistry and an almost reverent recognition of the value of data. John challenged established paradigms and pioneered developments in element and isotope systematics as applied to geochemical processes. He will alsobe remembered for his enthusiasm, his insight, his honesty, and his defence of anyone or any group he felt was badly treated.

Streszczenie:
Abstract A fifteenth-century manuscript gives an account of how a post-Conquest lord of Tamworth castle expelled nuns from nearby Polesworth (Warwickshire), later restoring them after he had been admonished in a dream by the nuns’ patron, St. Edith. The story can be tested against copies of twelfth-century charters, which show that the nuns were installed in Polesworth church anew by Robert Marmion (d. 1144), acting with his high-born wife Milisent. Political considerations were probably foremost in this process, and close ties with the royal family help to explain the convent’s association with the prestigious Continental Benedictine house at Cluny.

Venerated at Polesworth (Warws.) in the late Anglo-Saxon period, the identity of St Edith remains uncertain, with medieval chroniclers suggesting various candidates, but she is likely to have been a seventh-century Mercian princess, perhaps also connected with a church near Louth (Lincs.). Buried at Polesworth, where miracles were still being recorded in the thirteenth century, and perhaps with relics in the collegiate church at nearby Tamworth, her cult was very localised, with only a few outliers elsewhere in the Midlands, probably linked to the Marmion family, lords of Tamworth castle and the founders in the mid twelfth-century of a female religious house at Polesworth.

For a very long time, contemporary western societes and cultures have operated a censorship of emotions (Cambi,1998:37): indeed, they have been studied especially in the psychoanalytic discipline and as main topic in the investigation of human behavior (Ivi,1996:9). More recently, sociology has re-appropriated this “emotional” reflection, focusing the discourse on Homo Sentiens or Homo Patiens, in a passage from the individual identity the to the social one through a circular and self-poietic process: feelings and emotions (both primary and secondary) represent, the foundamental relational connection thanks to which are activated mechanisms of socialization and cultural transmission. The artiche aims to reflect on the emotions as social construction and linked to technologies with a high emotional connotation (Marmion, 2015,252:28-33).

AbstractPainting can only be thought in relation to the image. And yet, with (and within) painting what continues to endure is the image of painting. While this is staged explicitly in, for example, paintings of St. Luke by artists of the Northern Renaissance—e.g., Rogier van der Weyden, Jan Gossaert, and Simon Marmion—the same concerns are also at work within both the practices as well as the contemporaneous writings that define central aspects of the Italian Renaissance. The aim of this paper is to begin an investigation into the process by which painting stages the activity of painting. This forms part of a project whose aim is an investigation of the way philosophy should respond to the essential historicity of art (where the latter is understood philosophically).

Streszczenie:
Abstract The present article aims at making again a connection with central intuitions of the early Liturgical Movement in francophone Belgium at the outset of the 20th century. The reason for doing that is that it is still quite uncommon for professional theologians to consider liturgy as a real source for theologizing. The major focus of the article is the Body of Christ, a profound image, symbol, doctrine and reality, the impact and potential of which were rediscovered then in the circle of Benedictine monasteries. It was interpreted both in an ecclesial and sacramental way and it arguably constituted the basis for many other theological renewals prompted by subsequent representatives of the Liturgical Movement. Relying on a careful analysis of key texts by Dom Columba Marmion (1858-1923), Dom Lambert Beauduin (1873-1960) and Dom Maurice Festugière (1870-1950), I argue that their dealings with ‘liturgy intuitions’ ‐ which are not equal to ‘liturgical intuitions’ ‐ should be retrieved not only for scholarly purposes but, even more so, for a deepened understanding of the intrinsic and organic connections between Church, liturgy, Christ and life.

Streszczenie:
The source of nutrients that sustains abundant benthic primary productivity on Western Australian coastal reef systems is unknown, but it is possible that cycling between organic matter production and remineralisation contributes and may be enhanced by variations in the magnitude of physical forcing. We have used a 5-year nitrate dataset collected at weekly, daily and hourly temporal scales to investigate dynamics and supply mechanisms in Marmion Lagoon, Perth, Western Australia. Nitrate concentrations were variable over short time scales (hours) and formed pulses of elevated nutrient concentrations. On average, nitrate concentrations were highest during the high energy winter period (June to August) and scant wave data (June to August 1984) suggest a general correlation between wave activity and nitrate concentration. While it was not possible to definitively link variations in nitrate to wave forcing, increased energy may have promoted carbon recycling and nitrate release (possibly through abrasion of macroalgae, resuspension of detrital material or enhanced pore water exchange). Rapid uptake suggests that the nitrate pulses observed here may help sustain primary productivity in this shallow high energy environment. High temporal (hourly) variability suggests future surveys must sample at a frequency adequate to isolate long-term temporal trends from short-term background variations.

‘Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive’. Marmion, Sir Walter Scott 1808. Conflict is unpleasant, it is aversive, we tend to avoid it. Yet inevitably tension between individuals or between individuals and society is inevitable as the wants of one collide with the purpose of the other. Most of these tensions resolved peacefully but a societal level aggression can sometimes spill out. In the hinterlands between individuals and larger groups these can play out more safely through the courts or sometimes the avoidance of conflict can be the only tactic that the individual can use. As doctors we are used to sing medical problems with patients have true disease believe they have two disease and want to get well-the standard social model of medicine. But sometimes this plays out differently there are those who may fabricate symptoms to avoid punishment or for reward: malingering. There are those who believe they have a disease but the distress is disproportionate to any possible recognised component; somatic symptom disorder. There are those whose anxiety about whether they have a disease or not is paralysing and perhaps most distressing for all of the groups who self-harm or malinger with authentic illness or disease. In this talk Dr Wise will, using case examples, look at a couple of the tools that exist to assist psychiatrists in piloting a pathway through the stormy waters of abnormal illness in litigation.DisclosureNo significant relationships.

Many temperate reefs are experiencing a shift towards a greater abundance of tropical species in response to marine heatwaves and long-term ocean warming worldwide. Baseline data for coral communities growing in high-latitude reefs is required to better understand ecosystem changes over time. In this study, we explore spatial and temporal trends in the distribution of coral communities from 1999 to 2019 at 118 reef sites within the five marine parks located in the south-west of Western Australia (WA) between 30° to 35° S. Our estimates of coral cover were generally low (<5%), except for a few sites in Jurien Bay Marine Park and Rottnest Island Marine Reserve where coral cover was 10% to 30%. Interannual changes in genera assemblages were detected but were not consistent over time, whereas significant temporal increases in coral cover estimates were found at the lowest latitude site in Jurien Bay. Coral assemblages were primarily distinguished by Turbinaria spp. at Marmion Marine Park and Ngari Capes Marine Park, and Pocillopora spp. and Dipsastraea spp. at Rottnest Island and Jurien Bay. Our findings suggest that conditions in south-west WA are favorable to the ongoing survival of existing genera and there were minimal signs of expansion in coral cover at most study sites. Coral cover and composition on these reefs may, however, change with ongoing ocean warming and increased occurrence of marine heatwaves. This study provides a valuable benchmark for assessing future changes in coral assemblages and highlights the need for targeted hard-coral surveys to quantify subtle changes in high-latitude coral community assemblages.

The Archaean Steep Rock Group of northwest Ontario, situated in the Wabigoon Subprovince of the Superior Province, Canada, comprises five formations: Wagita Formation (clastics), Mosher Carbonate, Jolliffe Ore Zone, Dismal Ashrock, and Witch Bay Formation (metavolcanics). Reinvestigation of the geology of the group has shown that the basal clastics of the Wagita Formation (0–150 m) unconformably overlie the Marmion Complex (a massive tonalite – tonalite gneiss terrane, 3 Ga old). Overlying the basal elastics is the Mosher Carbonate (0–500 m), containing diverse stromatolite morphologies. Extensive zones of carbonate breccia occur adjacent to fault zones and mafic dykes. Stratigraphically above the Mosher Carbonate is the Jolliffe Ore Zone (100–400 m), which is divided into a lower Manganiferous Paint Rock Member and an upper Goethite Member. Within the Jolliffe Ore Zone thin layers of "Buckshot Ore" occur. These are horizons of haematitic pisolites and fragments, set in a lighter ferruginous matrix of kaolinite and gibbsite. Overlying the Jolliffe Ore Zone is the Dismal Ashrock, a dominantly high-Mg pyroclastic rock (22% MgO) with minor interbedded lava flows (15% MgO). In contact with the Dismal Ashrock are the metavolcanics of the Witch Bay Formation. This juxtaposition is not exposed in the Steep Rock mine section, and the Witch Bay Formation may be separated from the Dismal Ashrock by a structural break. The Witch Bay Formation is only provisionally included in the Steep Rock Group. The group is interpreted as a sequence deposited in an extensional or rifting environment. The unconformity has regional significance, and it may be possible to define an extensive cratonic nucleus of 3 Ga or older age in northwest Ontario.

Streszczenie:
POSTCOLONIAL READINGS OFJane Eyre have often highlighted the historical occlusion of West Indian slavery in the novel. Carl Plasa, for instance, argues thatPenny Boumelha points out that by her reckoning there are “ten explicit references to slavery in Jane Eyre. They allude to slavery in Ancient Rome and in the seraglio, to the slaveries of paid work as a governess and of dependence as a mistress. None of them refers to the slave trade upon which the fortunes of all in the novel are based” (62). While Jane Eyre's allusion to slavery in the seraglio is indeed the most precise historical allusion in the novel, critics working with general schemes of slave and imperial history have not been able to identify or unpack its topical reference to an anomalous moment in the history of British abolition of slavery. Like all of Jane's references to slavery, however, this allusion gains considerably in importance when read against that history, as I will demonstrate in this essay. I will also elaborate the generic and more broadly historical intertextuality of Jane's Gothic narratives of identification with the slave. By doing so, I disclose further meanings of slavery and empire in Jane Eyre, as well as the ways in which Gothic and heroic modes become a means, for Brontë and her characters alike, of articulating fraught racialized identifications and disavowals. Jane's growth of religious feeling, which Barbara Hardy has influentially suggested is taken “for granted” rather than demonstrated (66), is, I argue, grounded in her consciousness of the tensions between slavery and Christianity as they are played out in domestic and imperial spheres at a particular historical moment. That historical moment may be established through Brontë's allusions to slave rebellions and charters, and to a particular edition of Sir Walter Scott's poem Marmion.

It has been ten years since the publication of Lorenzo Lazzarini's monumental volume on the quarrying, use and properties of the coloured marbles of Greece: Poikiloi Lithoi, Versiculores Maculae: I Marmi Colorati della Grecia Antica (Lazzarini 2007). The first study since Angelina Dworakowska's Quarries in Ancient Greece (Dworakowska 1975) to attempt a large-scale examination of quarrying across Greece, Lazzarini's approach is fundamentally an archaeometric one. Analysis of the evidence for quarrying in different regions is set alongside minero-petrographic and geochemical analyses of the materials extracted. Lazzarini focuses on 12 lithotypes: marmor lacedaemonium from Laconia, variously referred to as serpentino and porfido verde antico; three stone types from the Mani peninsula: rosso antico tenario, nero antico tenario and cipollino tenario; from Chios, the famous marmor chium or portasanta, breccia di Aleppo and nero antico chiota; the breccia di settebasi and semesanto of Skyros; the intensively exploited marmor carystium or cipollino verde, as well as the marmor chalcidicum or fior di pesco from Euboea; and from central and northern Greece, marmor thessalicum or verde antico and the breccia policroma della Vittoria. For each of these lithotypes, Lazzarini considers the evidence for their use and distribution, illustrated with a distribution map in each case, and provides a thorough overview of what is known about their quarries. Archaeological and geological approaches are here combined, and this is a hallmark of much recent work on the question of quarrying and stone use through Greek history.

Streszczenie:
The Steep Rock Group of northwest Ontario's Wabigoon subprovince is one of the world's thickest Archean carbonate platform successions. It was deposited unconformably over a 3001-2928 Ma gneissic terrane, and contains a remarkable group of biogenic and oolitic limestones, dolostones, micrites, and karst breccias capped by a thick paleosol developed between and over karst towers. The presence of aragonite fans, herringbone calcite, and rare gypsum molds suggests that the carbonate platform experienced at least local anaerobic and hypersaline depositional conditions. This sequence shows that a combination of chemical and biological processes was able to build a carbonate platform 500 m thick by 3 billion years ago. The carbonate platform is structurally overlain by a mixture of complexly deformed rocks of the Dismal Ashrock forming a mélange with blocks of ultramafic volcaniclastic rocks, mafic volcanics, carbonate, tonalite, lenses of Fe-ore rock, and metasedimentary rocks, in a shaly, serpentinitic, and fragmental ultramafic volcaniclastic matrix. The mélange shows evidence of polyphase deformation, with early high-strain fabrics formed at amphibolite facies, and later superimposed brittle fabrics related to the final emplacement of the mélange over the carbonate platform. An amphibolite- through greenschist-grade shear zone marks the upper contact of the mélange with overlying mafic volcanic and tuffaceous rocks of the ca. 2932 Ma Witch Bay allochthon, interpreted as a primitive island arc sequence. We suggest an evolutionary model for the area that begins with rifting of an arc sequence (Marmion Complex of the Wabigoon arc) that initiated subsidence and sedimentation on the Steep Rock platform and its correlatives that extend for a restored strike length exceeding 1000 km. Shallow water carbonate sedimentation continued until the platform was uplifted on the flanks of a flexural bulge related to the approach of the Witch Bay allochthon, representing collision of the rifted arc margin of the Wabigoon subprovince with the Witch Bay arc. Mélange of the Dismal Ashrock was formed as off-axis volcanic rocks were accreted to the base of the Witch Bay allochthon prior to its collision with the Steep Rock platform.

Revealing paradoxes abounded in early Third Republic French representations of the marmiton, or culinary apprentice. Investigative reportage and reformist discourse exposed apprentices’ miserable existence while still depicting these young fellows as playful and carefree. Conversely, popular marmiton mythology, particularly in children’s literature, idealized culinary apprenticeship, amid glimpses of harsh living and working conditions, while also highlighting admittedly rare opportunities for ambitious apprentices to achieve substantial public success. Max Jacob’s children’s book Histoire du Roi Kaboul Ier et du Marmiton Gauwain provides an emblematic example with its parodic fairy-tale rendering of celebrity chef Auguste Escoffier’s extraordinary triumphs. Ultimately, while enchanting, the rosy popular vision of the magical marmiton obfuscated exploitative child labor practices underpinning the whole culinary enterprise in this supposed golden age of French gastronomy.

Streszczenie:
The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 63 (2015), issue 4. The painting Ascent into Heaven (88.8 x 39.9 cm; dendrological dating: 1482–1490) kept in the Palazzo Ducale in Venice is one of the four eschatological panels (the other three are: Earthly Paradise, Fall of the Damned, Hell) which probably were in the collection of the Venetian Cardinal Domenico Grimani in the 1520s. The panels’ original arrangement and function are unknown. The paintings are not signed and their attribution to Jheronimus Bosch (c. 1450–1516 ) is based largely on the grounds of stylistic criteria. In the study, I put Ascent into Heaven into two fundamental contexts for the iconographic analysis of this work: eschatological literature and Netherlandish/ Flemish painting and in the context of near-death experiences (NDE) as well. The answer to the question posed in the title of the study must remain twofold. On the basis of the data gathered in the study, the content of the painting can be comprehended by references to the most frequently quoted sources of inspiration for Bosch: one painting by Dieric Bouts (left wing of the Last Judgement Altarpiece; Lille, Palais des Beaux Arts), two illuminations by Simon Marmion (Le livre des sept Ages du monde; Brussels, Bibliothèque royale de Belgique, Ms. 9047, fols. IV & 12r) and a literary work Dat rike der ghelieven by Jan van Ruusbroec. Its content can be equally understood by reference to the role of the painter’s imagination (categories of inventio and fantasia), using his theological and astronomical knowledge. The above line of interpretation that emphasizes the influence of biblical logosphere, takes into account undeniable religious experience of the painter from ‘s-Hertogenbosch resulting from being a member of the Church. The factor of an epistemological importance which influences the form of the answer to the title question is hypothetical non-verifiable Bosch’s personal transcendental experience, thus it becomes impossible to evaluate the translation of what is spiritual (experience) into visual (image). Due to the elusive, not fully scientific nature of NDE this phenomenon should be excluded from the final conclusion.

The paper examines the function of storytelling in the novel Ceremony. Leslie Marmon Silko includes traditional stories about the Laguna Pueblo, retelling stories, which have been passed down through the generations throughout oral traditions, stories that explore the nature of magic, that go into the origin of evil, and which can also show the way to redemption. Silko uses stories in the form of poems, oral narration, intertextuality, she even writes without chapters. She did not give chapters to her novel because she did not want to adapt to the standard format of the novel, she tries to avoid Anglo centric conventions. As many postmodern texts, the novel Ceremony can be seen as a response to the horrors of World War II. But unlike other literary works of postmodernism, Silko argues that we must present this tragedy throughout oral narration in order to heal ourselves.

Leslie Marmon Silko is one of the most prodigious Native American writers of the 1970s. She is distinguished for her engagement with folklore traditions, religious inspirations, and quest narratives. In her novel, Ceremony (1977), Silko introduces a man on a journey that is full of hardships and frustrations. Accordingly, the present paper explores Tayo’s journey through which he quests for healing his psychological distress and physical illness caused by the atrocities of World War II. The paper also investigates different kinds of journeys the protagonist, as a war veteran, takes up and the various motives behind them. Finally, the paper tries to answer questions such as “What is the significance of the people the protagonist meets during his healing quest? Is he healed physically and psychologically at the end of the novel? How? Why? How do all the processes of healing contribute to affirming his identity and restoring his humanity?”
