Illumination of the manuscript is an integral part of the manuscritpt itself. Illumination of the manuscript can help readers understand the origin of the manuscripts as the characteristic and pattern of the motive of the manuscripts of each region is different from one to another, besides indeed the style and the subjectivity of the writer. One of the regions which has the manuscripts with various illumination is Cirebon, a border area between two poles of the two big cultures: Java and Sunda. The tradition of making manuscript illumination is developed in line with the tradition of the writing and rewriting the manuscripts. The illumination is made based on the contain of the text or the adjustment of the genre of the manuscript. This writing is discussing various types of the illumination and their functions in the manuscript and social-economic of Cirebon community.

<p>The most Indonesian written manuscripts were written in the Netherlands language. These manuscripts could be accessed by one of the following catalogs: Juynboll Catalogue (1899), Ronkel Catalogues (1909), Riclefs and P. Voorhoeve Catalogue (1977) etc. Unfortunately, the Indonesian researchers have no way to utilize them. According to the international catalogs written in Indonesian and foreign languages, The Malay manuscripts found in Banda Aceh reached about 300 titles. After conducting preliminary research and direct observation to the individual and institutional collectors, it was found that the real numbers of them could reach to a thousand titles of manuscripts that still have separated in various local places. On behalf these facts, the research aims to rescue these manuscripts from a disappearing and extinction by conducting inventory that is predicted to be able to push the Indonesian researchers ahead to discovering their substantial contents that in opinion useful for human life. The output of the research is compiling catalog documents of 1000 titles of Malay manuscripts found in Banda Aceh.<br />The theory and method used in this research are the theory of the codicology and the method of the catalog of manuscripts register. The codicology is subfield studying all of the manuscript’s aspects in details such as the place of storing, the owner of the manuscript, the content of the manuscript, etc. Whereas the catalog of a manuscript register is describing all of systematically manuscript’s physical and objective aspect in details. The results of the research will be proposed to be the main gate for entering later philology works i.e. presenting and interpreting the text that in turn can be positioned as a manual directive in social and national life.</p>

As a note written directly by the copyist/owner of the manuscript outside the text of the manuscript, the colophon can serve as a source of information about the history of its manuscript. Not only that, colophons can also function as a source of past knowledge outside the manuscript’s tradition. This is as shown by the colophons contained in the Malay manuscripts collection of A.B. Cohen Stuart stored in the National Library of Indonesia. This research on colophon manuscripts was carried out using descriptive methods and philological work steps to analyze data sources in the form of colophons. The results of the analysis, it can be concluded that 38 Malay manuscripts from the collection of Cohen Stuart are estimated to have been collected during his duty as conservator at Bataviaasch Genootschap, Batavia (Jakarta) in 1862-1871. These manuscripts were copied and/or owned by as many as 22 copyists/owners who lived in 16 villages in Jakarta in the period 1863-1869, except for two manuscripts which are estimated to be dated to the 1840s. Most of the manuscripts were copied for commercial purposes, i.e. for rent or sale. In addition, this colophon analysis also reveals some of the history of the city of Jakarta in the 19th century, including the structure of government, the villages in Batavia, as well as the formation of the Betawi ethnicity and the livelihoods of its people.

Manuscript AM 239 fol. is central for the so-called Helgafell-manuscripts, as it connects the group of some sixteen manuscripts and fragments to the Augustinian house of Helgafell on Snæfellsnes in west Iceland. The manuscript’s significance lies not only in the ownership note on fol. 1r, but also in the fact that it was used as an exemplar for two manuscripts, AM 653 a 4to (with JS fragm. 7) and SÁM 1. The codicological structure of the manuscript is complex and was recently described as a composite consisting of two late-fourteenth-century production units. This article revisits the codicology of AM 239 fol; it shows there are, in fact, three production units from that period and explores the ways in which these relate to one another. The genesis of the manuscript is important to keep in mind when discussing AM 239 fol. as exemplar, as it offers a possible explanation as to why only one of its texts was copied into SÁM 1.

The purpose of this paper is to study one of the manuscripts on the verso side, namely “Bazhong Cuzhong Fanduo” (八種粗重犯墮) which means “Eight Gross Transgressions”. Individual tantric classes have their own enumeration of precepts. Anuttara Yoga Tantra tradition abides by precepts such as the twenty-five uncontrived activities, samaya of the five Buddha families, the fourteen root downfalls, and the eight gross transgressions. Among them, the “Eight Gross Transgressions” manuscript, unique to Anuttara Yoga Tantra, is an important tantric material. Analysis of its content suggests that the manuscript “Bazhong Cuzhong Fanduo” belongs to the precepts of the Anuttara Yoga Tantra. Abstract: The material manifestation of late medieval parchment manuscripts results from their history, which is shaped by owners, fragmentators or bookbinders. While certain characteristics, such as the dissection or palimpsesting of manuscripts, are clearly recognizable and analyzable, these objects contain further significant information about their past, which is, unfortunately, invisible to the human eye. Using three music manuscripts from the early fifteenth century, we demonstrate how processed multispectral data can provide digital images that contain new evidence about the manuscript’s past, its production, and its use and interaction with other objects. Multispectral data have until now been generated – mostly at great expense – to make obscured writing visible. Our approach relies on a secondary use of these data to elucidate a manuscript’s production and its afterlife, and some results consequently compelled us to undertake further codicological and material investigations. Our specific findings include the imprints of spectacles used by Florentine monks, the traces left by Viennese bookbinders and Nuremberg librarians, and a music scribe’s unexpected change of inks. This paper is aimed at manuscript researchers and imaging scholars, as well as librarians and conservators, who are interested in the information on materiality that can be gleaned from manuscripts by applying MSI, and that can thus enrich our understanding of these unique objects.

This research is based on the case of the well-preserved collection of Gelumpai Manuscripts, which is estimated to be centuries old and believed to date back to the year 1300 C. The manuscripts serve as authentic evidence of Islamic civilization in Palembang at that time and can strengthen historical value through the collective memory of the nation. The study aimed to determine the manuscript’s supporting factors and the Gelumpai Manuscript preservation process. The research method used was qualitative with a case study approach. The research object was the Gelumpai Manuscript, which used the Ka Ga Nga script. Data was obtained through interviews, field observations, and related documentation studies. The results showed that several supporting factors for the preservation of this manuscript included adequate humidity, ideal light intensity, and effective protection against pests and pollution. This means that the South Sumatra Museum has implemented the appropriate standard. The museum carried out preservation by coating the manuscripts with white oil and periodically cleaning and checking the collection in the storage room. Furthermore, this museum held conservation support activities such as Museum Goes to School, Museum Goes to Village, and Collaboration Exhibitions, which were held to educate the public about the specialty of the Gelumpai Manuscript. So, the society will work together to maintain the existence of the collective memory contained in the manuscript.

In the early nineteenth century, the antiquarian James Savage produced a print edition of John Winthrop's seventeenth-century manuscript journal. This transmedial reproduction illustrates the differing affordances of print and manuscript as vehicles for connecting to the past. Manuscripts offer a tangible link to long-dead people, but manuscripts' rarity encourages their sequestration in archives. In contrast, print editions make historical content more broadly accessible but provide a less direct material link to earlier eras. Print facsimiles of manuscript, such as the reproduction of Winthrop's handwriting included in Savage's edition, seek to embody the best of both media. But print facsimiles' promise of access to manuscript materiality elides their nature as temporal hybrids and their tendency to distort and damage their originals. The way that nineteenth-century antiquarians negotiated manuscript's and print's temporal affordances and juggled the competing prerogatives of past, present, and future makes those antiquarians useful models for understanding the stakes of digitization projects today.

AbstractThis essay sheds new light on the controversial fourteenth-century poet and compiler Lodewijk van Velthem. Specifically, the article considers the possible relationships between The Hague, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, MS 129 A 10, the manuscript containing the famous Lancelot Compilation, and Leiden, University Library, MS BPL 14 E, the only extant manuscript with Velthem's entire Fifth Part of the Spiegel historiael. A note written at the end of the manuscript in The Hague naming Velthem has been interpreted in different ways, either as a note of the manuscript's ownership, or as the attribution of the compilation to Velthem. Other scholars have considered Velthem the 'corrector' of the manuscript. The relatively low quality of these two manuscripts, as well as the types of annotations made in the margins of MS 129 A 10, however, can be explained when we consider both books as the poet's working copies, as manuscripts which formed part of Velthem's own literary archive.

The notebooks and papers of Captain Alexander Matheson (c. 1833-1897), a shipowner from Dornie, Kintail, are commonly referred to as the Dornie Manuscripts.  The bulk of the collection consists of Gaelic verse and song taken down from the oral recitation of old people in Wester Ross, and composed, for the most-part, by poets native to that area. The main aim of this thesis is to present a representative selection of Gaelic verse from Alexander Matheson’s collection.  Sixteen texts have been selected for full editorial treatment, ten of which are not known from any other written source.  These texts are presented in a standardised Gaelic orthography, in chronological order, together with appropriate notes and references.  Also included are relevant indexes, appendices, and a glossary. A substantial part of the thesis consists of transcripts of all the Gaelic verse from the Dornie Manuscripts, with cross-references to other versions and appropriate notes.  An index of the poets featured in the collection is included. The introduction to the thesis contains a brief biography of the collector, a description of non-verse material in the manuscripts, and an account of previous work based on the Dornie Manuscripts.

In the 1930s, Oregon State University received an impressive oversized manuscript, now known as "The Gradual," as part of a large donation of books. Not much was known about this manuscript. It does not have documentation attached from the time of its acquisition, nor had any methodical study been undertaken regarding the manuscript. This thesis examines the OSU Gradual, aiming to provide research tools for the identification of musical manuscripts of unknown or unclear provenance that could be useful to conservators, archivists, and librarians, irrespective of musical training. It is conceived as a "rough guide" for working situations where there is no dedicated manuscript specialist, in particular, a fulltime Latin paleographer or a chant scholar overseeing a massive collection. Instead, its "how-to" nature addresses curators and catalogers managing smaller manuscript collections as generalists, offering an interdisciplinary approach both beneficial and suitable to the aims of this study.

This doctoral dissertation intends to provide a complete, critical, and up-to-date edition of the scholia of Book IX of the Odyssey, including both the minor as well as the major scholia. This book, along with the next three, presents the so-called adventures of Ulysses, which have drawn the attention of scholars of Homeric work since early time. To accomplish this task, it has been necessary to analyze and systematically confront the previous editions that either in its totality or partially include scholia related to Book IX of the Odyssey, and at the same time, to establish the corpus of manuscripts we will use, established at 37, which have different genetic typologies and filiations. The methodology novelty of classifying the scholia by types based on their content stands out: referring to titles, dedicated to argumentative summaries, centered on lexicological aspects, on grammatical aspects, or contextualized or mythographic. This classification, besides helping to understand the meaning of each scholium, also offers an interesting vision about the filiation of the manuscripts. The objective, therefore, is to offer a corpus that collects the scholia, annotations, and also the significant corrections of the Homeric text. In this corpus, there are contents of different types, ranging from myths in versions different from the traditional ones to words that need to be interpreted, including syntactic expressions or morphological annotations.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the production of the Middle English poetic manuscript. It analyses the mise-en-page of manuscripts created during a crucial period for book production, immediately after 1400, when there was a sudden explosion in the production of vernacular manuscripts of literary texts, when the demand for books increased, and the commercial book trade swiftly followed. It offers a close analysis of the mise-en-page of the manuscripts of three central authors: Chaucer’s, Gower’s, and Hoccleve’s manuscripts were at the heart of this sudden flourishing and were, crucially, produced when scribal methods for creating the literary page were still unformed. Previous studies have focused on the localised readings produced by single scribes, manuscripts, or authors, offering a limited examination of broader trends. This study offers a wider comparison: where individual studies offer localised analysis, the multi-textuality of this thesis offers broader perceptions of book production and of scribal responses to the new literary texts being produced. In analysing the layout of seventy-six manuscripts, including borders, initials, paraphs, rubrics, running titles, speaker markers, glosses and notes, this thesis argues that scribes were deeply concerned with creating a manuscript page specifically to showcase texts of poetry. The introduction outlines current scholarship on mise-en-page and defines the scribe as one who offers an individual response to the text on the page within the context of the inherited, commercial, and practical practices of layout. The three analytical chapters address the placement of the features of mise-en-page in each of the seventy-six manuscripts, each chapter offering three contrasting manuscript situations. Chapter 1 analyses the manuscripts of Chaucer, who left no plan for the look of his page, causing scribes to make decisions on layout that illuminate fifteenth-century scribal responses to literature. These are then compared to the manuscripts of Gower in Chapter 2, directly or indirectly supervised by the poet, which display rigorous uniformity in their layout. This chapter argues that scribes responded in much the same way, despite the strict control over meaning. Chapter 3 focuses on Hoccleve’s autograph manuscripts which are unique in demonstrating authorial control over layout. This chapter compares the autograph to the non-autograph manuscripts to argue that scribal responses differed from authorial intentions. Each of the three chapters analyses the development of mise-en-page specifically for literary texts. Focussing on the mise-en-page, this thesis is able to compare across a range of texts, manuscripts, scribes, and authors to mount a substantial challenge to current perceptions that poetic manuscripts were laid out in order to assist readers’ understanding of the meaning of the texts they contain. Instead, it argues that though there was a concern with representing the nuances of poetic meaning, often scribal responses to poetry were bound up with presenting poetic form.

Ahvensalmi, Juulia Kirsikka. "Reading the manuscript page : the use of supra-textual devices in the Middle English Trotula-manuscripts". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2013. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4628/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the use of supra-textual devices in the Trotula, a set of Middle English gynecological and obstetrical medical treatises. Through close examination of the thirteen manuscript versions dating between the early or mid-fifteenth century and the late sixteenth century, this thesis studies the way in which punctuation, layout, colour, marginalia and other visual devices are used to structure and present the texts. Combining quantitative and qualitative methods, this thesis examines the ways in which supra-textual devices are used to organise the texts into units of various type and length (major and minor sections, paragraphs, recipes, sense-units, sentences, clauses, phrases), and how the presentation of these units contributes to the reading of the text, showing that, despite the lack of standardised punctuation practices, each manuscript text uses a consistent system of supra-textual devices. Their use is not haphazard, as has previously been asserted; supra-textual devices are used purposefully to structure the texts and to communicate with the reader. The definitions of ‘sentence’ and ‘sense-unit’ in the Middle English context are also discussed, as well as the terminology used to describe medieval punctuation practices. In particular, the often-made binary division between ‘grammatical’ and ‘rhetorical’ punctuation is examined, showing that this division is neither very informative nor useful in practice for describing the systems of supra-textual devices present in medieval English writing. While the majority of the units can be described in terms of ‘sense-units’, the development towards the modern ‘sentence’ can be evinced in the data. This thesis also examines the role that scribes played in adapting and modifying the textual presentation in their exemplars, arguing that scribes played a key role in modifying the appearance of the manuscript texts to suit the needs of their audiences. Emphasising the importance of contextualisation, the final chapter focuses on the pragmatics of supra-textual devices, and how they can contribute to our understanding of the ways in which these texts were read and used by private individuals, professional medical practitioners or textual communities. This thesis argues that the Trotula had a number of different audiences, with varied literacy skills, and the supra-textual devices in the manuscripts suggest a range of reading practices, from private to communal, silent to oral, intensive to extensive. This thesis demonstrates that a close examination of supra-textual devices can bring new insights into Middle English grammar as well as scribal and reading practices.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines diagrams found in English medieval manuscripts dating from the ninth to the fourteenth century. It is based upon a survey of diagrammatic material, the results of which are presented in the catalogue raisonnee (Appendix A). The lack of adequate terms to define diagrams is addressed, as is the lack of a consistent and coherent treatment of diagrams in existing literature. A close critique of diagrams can be an aid in dating manuscripts and tracing textual recensions, and therefore a well-defined yet flexible framework must be established in order to further future research. The catalogue establishes standard types for particular diagrams, which can be used for comparison and identification of examples in manuscripts. The discussion of the thesis is largely structured on a chronological basis, studying the types of diagrams which were in use in three periods; late Antiquity, the Dark Ages, and the twelfth to fourteenth centuries. The main diagrammatic forms which were transmitted from late classical commentaries in medieval manuscripts are analysed in terms of their content and technique. These diagrams are still influenced by Greek learning. Changes and adaptations in these forms and techniques are then observed. The degeneracy of learning in the Dark Ages is characterised by diagrams based on cyclical rather than circular forms. The availability of translations of Greek texts through Arab sources in the twelfth century leads again to precise diagrams which accompany logical textual exposition. Diagrams are finally viewed within the wider context of medieval art. Features of medieval aesthetics are highlighted which make it possible to approach diagrams in the same way as works of art. The importance of geometric structures to artistic composition is increased by the symbolic meanings which are attached to certain shapes and proportions. Pictorial diagrams themselves migrate into wall-paintings and floor-mosaics, and also eventually into literature

Streszczenie:
This paper aims to give an account of some of the manuscripts related to Lothar. In its first section an attempt is made at retracing a set of books that could have belonged to Lothar’s library, nowadays known only from secondary sources. In the second section some display codices are discussed, either commissioned by Lothar, or dedicated to him, such as Lothar’s Gospel Book MS Par. lat. 266 or those traditionally referred to as the «Lothar-Gruppe», whose actual connection both to Lothar and to each other is questioned here. The third and last part of the paper contains some considerations on the manuscripts produced during the years of Lothar’s government in Italy, that essentially coincide with the second quarter of the ninth century.

It was the translation movement in Islamic civilization which made the works of Greek scholars available to the Muslims.[i] But not only did translators put the various works of Aristotle, Plato, Galen, and other philosophers into Arabic; the works of the Greek philosophers were also classified and catalogued, in which context mention should be made of two works by Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī, in one of which he presented the works of Plato, and in the other the works of Aristotle.[ii] Ḥunayn b. Isḥāq in his letter to ʿAli b. Yaḥyā mentioned individually 129 books that his co-workers had translated with him, and he gives a detailed description of how he obtained the manuscripts and how he compared the manuscripts with each other in order to arrive at correct and complete texts.

Both manuscripts are supposed to presumably represent one monument of ancient writing made in two copies. Over time, the original variant and the copy were chaotically mixed up and ended up in different museum collections of the two countries — Bulgaria and Ukraine.

Streszczenie:
ndramayu Regency has many ancient manuscripts that contain valuable information. Paper-based manuscripts are very easily damaged. Therefore, it is necessary to preserve ancient manuscripts. Switching to a digital flipbook is considered appropriate because it provides an interface that is similar to the original script. This study aims to describe the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of ancient manuscripts owned by the Bandar Cimanuk Indramayu Museum. Digitization can be an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts. The research used descriptive qualitative method. Data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation study. It is hoped that the research results in the form of flipbook development can be used as an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts that represent, protect, and exceed the physicality of ancient manuscripts. The conclusion of this study is that the ancient Legok Kolot manuscript is the identity and wealth of the Indramayu people, so it needs to be digitized so that the preservation of the script is maintained. The media transfer process at the Bandar Cimanuk Museum goes through three main stages, namely the pre-digitization process, the digitization process, and the post-digitization process. In its process, there are three important things that must be considered, such as source characteristics, product usability, and technological characteristics. The use of digital flipbooks as an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts is considered to protect, represent, and exceed the original ancient manuscripts

Streszczenie:
Background: The tens of thousands of academic journal websites that are on the Internet today often do not have a clear organizational structure for their website. If most of them are convenient enough for readers (if the journal is open access), then many have problems informing authors about the conditions, the process of submitting and reviewing the manuscript. The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops. Aim of Study: To develop a website model for an academic journal that takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high quality scientific manuscripts. Material and Methods: The academic journal website model is based on a structural-functional approach. The website content consists of text and integrated applications. This model takes into account the basic requirements for the preparation, publication, and archiving of high-quality open access scientific manuscripts, as well as the indexing of journal articles by leading indexing agencies. Results: The academic journal website model is structured with the following menu and submenu elements: 1. HOME: 1.1. Journal information; 1.2. From the editorial office; 1.3. Databases, Indexing; 2. EDITORIAL BOARD: 2.1. Editorial board; 2.2. Reviewers; 2.3. Editing and reviewing process; 3. EDITORIAL POLICIES: 3.1. Editorial policies; 3.2. Plagiarism policy; 3.3. Open access policy; 3.4. The ethics codex of scientific publications; 3.5. Disclaimer; 3.6. License terms; 3.7. Terms of publications (fee); 4. ARCHIV: 4.1. Previous issues; 4.2. Current issue; 4.3. Articles online first; 5. INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS: 5.1. General recommendations; 5.2. Manuscript templates; 5.3. Supplemental materials; 6. STATISTICS: 6.1. Publications; 6.2. Authors; 6.3. Readers; 7. CONTACTS: 7.1. Contact; 7.2. Subscriptions; 7.3. Search. Conclusions: This academic journal website model was implemented for the International Journal of Science Annals (IJSA). Authors and readers of IJSA noted the advantages of the model proposed by the author, including: a convenient and understandable website interface, the availability of the necessary hyperlinks to the pages of the journal's website and external media (sites of indexed agencies, library archives, etc.), convenient search for information on the website and published in the journal articles (by author, publication, text of the article), availability of integrated applications (online submission of manuscripts, filing appeals against the decision of reviewers and complaints about published articles, viewing the interactive printed version of the journal, etc.), availability of templates (for authors, reviewers), availability of multiple formats for archiving articles (PDF, DOAJ, XML, TXT), the ability to choose the style of citing the article and the website language (English, Ukrainian), etc. Keywords: journal, model, website, academic, indexing

Streszczenie:
The names of the kings of the Fifth Dynasty may serve as a prototypical example for the re-evaluation of Manetho’s king-list: Userkaf, Sahure, Neferirkare, Shepseskare, Reneferef, Nirewoser, Djedkare-Isesi and Unas are all recorded in the king-list of Manetho as transmitted by Sextus Julius Africanus according to the Ecloga chronographiae of George Syncellus. Although the names as preserved have obviously suffered on a long way of copying manuscripts over and over again, a closer look at the Greek transcriptions reveals the high quality and the still unbroken relevance of Manetho’s Aegyptiaca for modern Egyptological scholarship, when dealing with chronology, onomastics and linguistics. As will be shown, there is a line, identifiable with variable degrees of difficultly but finally clearly discernible, which leads all the way down from the Old Kingdom to Manetho’s Aegyptiaca.

Streszczenie:
The study of expressions of filiation has already been the subject of several articles, which were limited to periods prior to the Third Intermediate Period. The aim of this article is to evaluate these expressions within the specific framework of the Books of the Dead from the 21st and 22nd Dynasties. These periods are marked by a significant increase in the variety of expressions employed, whereas the New Kingdom manuscripts expressed filiation according to a more uniform and rigid scheme. Similarly to what happens with titles and despite the diversity of expressions, one observes a progressive decrease in the mention of filiation which almost disappears from funerary papyri, while long genealogies on temple statues are developing. This contribution attempts to understand the motivations behind the use of these expressions and more generally to grasp their purpose in expressing the identity of the deceased.
