Purpose – This study aims to examine the association between the use of three types of controls (input, behaviour and output) with the level of employee organisational commitment (EOC) across organisational life cycle (OLC) stages. Design/methodology/approach – Data were collected by a survey questionnaire from a random sample of 343 general managers in Australian manufacturing business units. Findings – The level of EOC was found to be highest in growth and revival stage units, suggesting that EOC relates to the level of innovation. The analysis revealed that the types of controls were significantly associated with the level of EOC. In particular, a significant positive association was found between input controls and the level of EOC in both the birth and revival stages. Originality/value – This study contributes to both the management control system (MCS) literature and practice. First, because only a limited number of studies have examined the effect of MCSs on the level of EOC, and there is no published study to date which has examined the association between the types of controls with the level of EOC from an OLC perspective, this study fills a gap in the literature by examining these associations. Secondly, the findings have important implications for Australian manufacturing organisations. Specifically, by providing an insight into the association between the types of controls with the level of EOC across OLC stages, the results suggest that managers of organisations in the birth and revival stage need to place greater emphasis on input controls so as to enhance the level of EOC.

In India, most of the streets within the habitations are illuminated from evening until morning, averaging roughly 12 hours per day. Throughout the night, some streets may not have automobiles or even pedestrians travelling through them which results in power loss. In addition, the number of vehicles on the road is increasing every day, and traditional traffic management is still in use, road accidents are one of our country's key issues. Many important lives are lost as a result of these accidents, which occur when emergency assistance is unavailable. So, our proposed solution for this problem is that we are designing a model that first detects the traffic and examine then based on situation it controls the lightening system and send traffic intensity data to internet hour wise. For accident detection we used the SOS button to get help immediately and crewman get the exact location of accident. According to the results obtained from the proposed method, energy usage is greatly reduced, and we can receive a very quick alarm when something unpleasant occurs.

This paper aims to discuss the concepts and methodological issues of enterprise risk management (ERM). The case study of company A shows that ERM has been implemented and integrated with management control as a means of monitoring its subsidiaries. First, ERM system was implemented through comprehensive review of corporate risk policies, risk management processes, roles and responsibilities, and risk culture. Second, company A integrated ERM with the existing management control system in order to evaluate the risk underlying the current management activities. Finally, ERM implementation was expanded to all subsidiaries so that each business unit would be delegated for its own risk management. This paper provides insight on the process how group-level internal auditors can use ERM as a tool to manage risk of subsidiaries, thereby filling the gap between academic research and practice. This successful ERM adoption case can be used as a guideline for other organizations, which plan to adopt ERM with reduced costs and improved processes.

A larger entity of the cost management system which assists executives in fulfilling organizational objectives is known as management accounting and control system (MACS). It is used for planning, monitoring and control of different organizational activities, to optimize the use of resources, to support the process of decision making and to the performance evaluation process. The scope of the MACS can be divided into two broad groups: technical considerations and behavioral considerations. Technical considerations fall into two categories: (i) the relevance of information generated and (ii) the scope of the system like the value chain, total life cycle costing, target costing, kaizen costing, benchmarking, balanced scorecard etc. whereas the behavioral consideration involves individuals and their behavior within organizations.NCC JournalVol. 3, No. 1, 2018, Page: 153-166

The aim of this article is to develop a conceptual model of the institutional analysis, planning and control comprehensive system, which, according to the authors’ point of view, has to be integrated organically into the overall system of the governmental management. The article starts with the analysis of the of the “new institutional economics” methodology’s contributions to theoretical research in the area of applied economics, with particular emphasis to developing countries, particularly to Ukraine. Then authors continue by providing an overview of the new institutional economics theory and methodology as well as their several branches. Particularly, it is described the authors’ point of view in regard to the fundamental definitions of the institutional theory. One of the article’s purposes is to outline the basic features of the institutional planning theory and to justify its interpretation in the general planning theory framework. Carrying out this task, the authors describe the existing diversity of planning theories and the main achievements of the new institutional economics in the development and implementation of planning procedures. From authors’ point of view, institutional planning is the economic theory in which planning is described as the sequence of actions of organizations or/and people responsible for planning procedures and stakeholders in order to get the immediate and final planning results. The successful implementation of such model would help the planners and stakeholders to get the results that consist in the effectiveness of the national economy and its competitiveness.

Purpose This paper aims to examine the association between the interactive and diagnostic approaches to using controls and Miller and Friesen’s (1984) organizational life cycle (OLC) stages (birth, growth, maturity, revival). Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from a random sample of 343 general managers in Australian manufacturing organizations. Findings The results indicate that both approaches are used to a greater extent in the growth and revival stages than the birth and maturity stages, whereas the interactive and diagnostic approaches are used to a similar extent in each of the four OLC stages. Research limitations/implications This study contributes to the management control system literature by examining the use of the interactive and diagnostic approaches from an OLC perspective. The findings highlight that the complementary nature of the interactive and diagnostic approaches applies in each OLC stages, and suggest that similar attention should be placed on the use of both the interactive and diagnostic approaches in each OLC stage. Practical implications The study provides managers with an insight into the prevalence of the use of interactive and diagnostic approaches across the birth, growth, maturity and revival stages. Originality/value This study contributes to the management control system literature by adopting the configuration approach to examine how multiple contingent variables simultaneously affect the approach to using controls. Specifically, this study examines how organizations adjust their emphasis on Simons’ (1995) interactive and diagnostic approaches to using controls as they move across different development stages. These development stages were labelled as OLC stages and are determined based on the simultaneous consideration of multiple contingent factors.

Safety and Reliability are fundamental and challenging problems in the Battery Management System (BMS). To maximize the lifetime of battery, the process of charge and discharge must have to consider consensus. This paper provides a theoretical framework for analysis of consensus control with an emphasis on robustness due to the battery differentiation. A hybrid model is constructed to illustrate the process of updating energy state and topology structure. Based on the model, a consensus algorithm for BMS is proposed. It’s useful for evaluating optimal utilization of battery management at design phase. Related analysis reveals that the energy state of discharge process in battery modules converges to balance. A prototype of simulation was developed according to the constructed model. Simulations results are presented that demonstrate the effects on the speed of consensus algorithms and cooperative control of battery modules.

The commercialization of lithium-ion batteries enabled the widespread use of portable consumer electronics and serious efforts to electrify trans-portation. Managing the potent brew of lithium-ion batteries in the large quantities necessary for vehicle propulsion is still challenging. From space applications a billion miles from Earth to the daily commute of a hybrid electric automobile, these batteries require sophisticated battery management systems based on accurate estimation of battery internal states. This system is the brain of the battery and is responsible for estimating the state of charge, state of health, state of power, and temperature. The state estimation relies on accurate prediction of complex electrochemical, thermal, and mechanical phenomena, which increases the importance of model and parameter accuracy. Moreover, as the batteries age, how should the parameters of the model change to accurately represent the performance, and how can we leverage the limited sensor information from the measured terminal voltage and sparse surface temperatures available in a battery system? With a frugal sensor set, what is the optimal sensor placement? This article reviews estimation techniques and error bounds regarding sensor noise and modeling errors, and concludes with an outlook on the research that will be necessary to enable fast charging, repurposing of batteries for grid energy storage, degradation prediction, and fault detection.

Despite the importance of the role of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing and growing economies, little is known regarding the use of management control tools in them. In management control in SMEs, a holistic system needs to be modeled to enable a careful study of how each lever (belief systems, boundary systems, interactive control systems, and diagnostic control systems) affects the organizational performance of SMEs. In this article, a fuzzy logic approach is proposed for the decision-making system in management control in small and medium enterprises. C. Mamdani fuzzy inference system (MFIS) was applied as a decision-making technique to explore the influence of the use of management control tools on the organizational performance of SMEs. The electrical transmission and distribution systems are working on their own independence in operation. The operation of these systems can be modified by manual switching process. The switching process takes place only there is a need for transmission line alteration and transmission line fault attendance period. The manual switching operation during fault occurrence period consumes lot of time for the trained person to reach the place and it may leads to severe damages to the transmission system, also it’s a threat to human safety. In order to avoid such drawbacks circuit breakers and automatic trippers were installed to the transmission lines and distribution systems. The circuit breakers and trippers are able to switch off the system only after the fault observation in the transmission line system. The proposed artificial intelligence based management and control system consists of several sensor elements and wireless IoT transmission to predict and avoid the fault occurrence by monitoring the physical and atmosphere condition of the transmission and distribution line. The control structure fitted with the transmission line monitors the environment and line fault condition and the IoT transmission unit gives a possible communication from the remote monitoring system to the transmission line system for switching operations.

Construction managers rely on ready access to a large amount of project information. The entry, processing, and flow of information are important in avoiding problems, delays, and claims on construction projects. This paper describes a study of the extent and nature of project documentation and project information flows within the construction industry. The study mapped various types of project information against the documents that typically provide the information and the construction management functions that provide and access the information. From this analysis, a computer system to support the task of project information management was designed. The problem analysis, requirements specification, system design, and system implementation are described. The system allows construction managers to enter information for a wide variety of project events, cross-reference the various bodies of information, and use the information to monitor and control various aspects of a construction project. The objective of the study was not necessarily to improve upon commercially available project information and documentation tools, but to deepen and formalize our understanding of project information as an input to a larger body of work on integrated project information systems and data standards for the construction industry.Key words: construction management, project management, document control, information flow, databases.

The aim of this study is to investigate the role of control and develop the common approaches to the control in a key area of management – the organization of the process of preparation, adoption and implementation of managerial decisions, which could serve as the basis for creating and maintaining an efficient system of control in organizations and a reference for solving problems in a variety of managerial situations. The structured analysis of the necessary and sufficient set of stages (phases) and the procedures of development, adoption and implementation of managerial decisions that ensure the managerial cycle have allowed the author to evaluate the role and place of the stages and procedures, specify the role of control in the process of management, and the relationship of the control and other managerial procedures. Understanding the characteristics of the relationships and the role of control can be required by the management in order to create a system of control taking into account the specifics of the organization. Analysis of the “managerial” and “executive” decisions allowed the author to identify the ratio of different types of control at their implementation. Interconnection between development technologies, adoption and implementation of managerial decisions and control procedures provides some practical importance for management. The results of the study can be used by management of various organizations to develop common approaches to solving problems in various managerial situations, using the conclusions drawn by the author. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the management control systems developed by universities and groups within them, to manage research within UK University Business and Management Schools. Specifically, the paper analyses how universities develop their internal management control systems in response to an externally imposed regulatory system. It also provides an agenda for future research. Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses a middle range approach to consider the UK Research Excellence Framework (REF) and the previous Research Assessment Exercises. It uses the language provided by a number of conceptual frames to analyse insights from the lived experience, and builds on previous literature that has recognised the perverse outcomes of such performance measurement systems. Findings – The study finds that the internal management control systems developed by academics themselves amplify the controls imposed by the REF. These internal control systems are accepted by some academics although they encourage a movement away from previously held academic values. Originality/value – This study contributes to debates about the dysfunctional impacts of the use of performance measures to manage research. Its originality lies in explaining that the management control systems developed to resist the imposition of external performance measurement systems may lead to symbolic violence where participants become involved with their own subjugation.

ABSTRACT Using an online survey of 468 U.S. employees from diverse industries and professions, we provide empirical evidence that management control system design choices can affect autonomous motivation in employees. Drawing on self-determination theory and the levers of control framework, we predict and find that employee autonomous motivation is positively associated with the use of beliefs control systems and interactive control systems and negatively associated with the use of diagnostic control systems. Moreover, we find that the joint use of diagnostic and interactive controls is positively associated with autonomous motivation. We also find a positive association between employees' autonomous motivation and individual self-reported effort, job performance, and creativity. Additional analyses examine the sources of motivation behind these results, focusing on identified motivation. The theory and results of our study provide a potential explanation for the recent trend in practice of organizations increasingly emphasizing their values and higher purposes. The article is focused on the concept definition and basic elements of the system of management and quality control of goods. Economic and legal means of ensuring the quality of goods are claimed to outline legal procedures and mechanisms of solving the state's tasks concerning: a) creation and maintenance of the required level of safety of domestic goods (products, works, services) concerning consumers and the environment; b) promoting the competitiveness of goods in economic turnover. The modern sphere of technical regulation of quality of goods (products, works, services) is outlined in terms of such types of normative documents as: technical regulation; standard; technical conditions, the key features of each concept are defined and analyzed. It is established that the forms of conformity assessment are: product certification and application of conformity marks; conducting laboratory tests in accredited laboratories; self-declaration of conformity claimed by the market operator, which may be combined with the application of a control (supervision) system. The quality management system (hereinafter – QMS) is defined as a system of tools, methods and activities of the subject of economic relations – the producer, aimed at meeting the requirements and expectations of consumers regarding the quality of goods (products, works, services). QMS (quality management systems) are preventive. QMS can be focused on products, works, services, environment, production process or encompass all application spheres. Within the QMS, in turn, the product quality control system is a set of interrelated objects and subjects of control, the types, methods and tools used to assess product quality and prevent production defects / poor quality at different stages of the product life cycle and quality levels management (effective system of quality control of goods allows, in most cases, to make a timely and targeted impact on the quality level of goods, to prevent various defects in the work, to ensure their prompt identification and elimination with the least resource costs). The main elements of the quality control system include the following subsystems: planning; inspection control; incentives and responsibilities. The types of quality control of goods are covered in the article. In order to improve product safety nowadays most of the manufacturers in the field of economics are revealed to apply quality management systems based on the following standards: ISO, HACCP, GMP. Relevant international and national standards used by many producers in quality management and control systems to improve product safety in modern economic realities are analyzed.

Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to reveal the relations between management control system (MCS), leadership style and gender ideology. It investigates how a female leader’s gendered personal values are formed, translated, produced, and reproduced in her leadership style, the subsequent MCS and organisational life. Design/methodology/approach This is an interpretive case study that uses the anthropological lens of emic and etic views. The emic view is derived from the interpretation of the company’s subjects. The etic view refers to the interpretation of outsiders (the researchers and previous literatures). The combination of these two views enables an in-depth understanding of the case. Interviews, observation and documentary analysis were used to collect the data. Findings In a gendered society, a female leader will gain full respect if she demonstrates leadership behaviours that fit her subordinates’ gendered expectations. The leader’s and followers’ common gendered cultural background will result in leadership and followership that support each other. Gendered leadership produces gendered MCS. Gendered MCS is based on gendered cultural values that direct the behaviour of organisational members to focus on certain competencies based on a single gender perspective. In turn, the gendered MCS sustains and reinforces the gendered leadership. Research limitations/implications The study does not focus on the potential value of including feminine measures in MCS. In the future, MCS literatures need to explore the strategic advantages of introducing measures into the system in order to develop feminine competencies in organisation. Furthermore, the processes by which MCS reinforces gendered practices in a society are not explored in the study. Therefore, another important next step is to examine the patterns of the reinforcement processes and their magnitude in strengthening the biases beyond organisational boundaries (e.g. in professional and industrial practices). Practical implications This study encourages leaders to consider the use of masculine and feminine characters in MCS to increase organisational effectiveness, build a more humane organisational atmosphere, establish organisational cohesion and harmonise different personal aspirations. Originality/value MCS literatures tend to hide gender bias in the system. This study offers insight on how MCS translates, produces and reproduces societal gendered practices in organisational life.

Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) has been providing services that increase convenience for users by connecting objects to a network. As a result, the number of users and smart devices utilizing IoT is also increasing. So, the existing system has a problem that when a variety of devices are added, a bottleneck or an overload of the server occurs, because of structure of the system. In this paper, we propose IoT task management system using control board to solve these problems. The server performs only simple communication and analysis, and the management of tasks such as remote control is carried out using the control board. Also, it analyzes the user's remote control command and recommends to users the most used equipment. Through this, it is possible to reduce the data throughput and traffic of the server and to provide the service with increased convenience and accuracy of operation.

Streszczenie:
The development of technology for manufacturing products and machines carrying out technological operations is closely linked to developing systems for tracking and controlling product and production process parameters. This paper shows how the development of quality control and production management systems such as TQM and MES is related to the development of imaging and image analysis methods used in industry. The development of imaging methods is discussed in the context of developing product quality control capabilities. It is also shown as to what extent image analysis can be used to observe manufacturing parameters and process management capabilities. It was noted that the use of vision systems as an industrial measurement-quality control system would still increase. Due to the increase in imaging resolution, there was an increase in the imaging frequency, growth in the spectral range of imaging, and the dynamic development of three-dimensional and hybrid imaging methods. Based on experience from industrial applications and tasks described in scientific publications, areas where vision systems will play a key role in inspection tasks have been identified. This is the introductory article for the Special Issue “Image Analysis for Product Quality Control” on using vision systems in various industries to execute production quality control tasks.

Streszczenie:
Autonomous systems are becoming pervasive in everyday life, and many of these systems are complex and safety-critical. Formal verification is important for providing performance and safety guarantees for these systems. In particular, Hamilton–Jacobi (HJ) reachability is a formal verification tool for nonlinear and hybrid systems; however, it is computationally intractable for analyzing complex systems, and computational burden is in general a difficult challenge in formal verification. In this review, we begin by briefly presenting background on reachability analysis with an emphasis on the HJ formulation. We then present recent work showing how high-dimensional reachability verification can be made more tractable by focusing on two areas of development: system decomposition for general nonlinear systems, and traffic protocols for unmanned airspace management. By tackling the curse of dimensionality, tractable verification of practical systems is becoming a reality, paving the way for more pervasive and safer automation.
