Streszczenie:
Illusions of Democracy: Malaysian Politics and People offers an up-to-date and broad analysis of the contemporary state of Malaysian politics and society. Transcending disciplinary boundaries, it offers a look at Malaysian politics not only through the lens of political science but also anthropology, cultural studies, international relations, political economy and legal studies touching on both overlooked topics in Malaysian political life as well as the emerging trends which will shape Malaysia’s future. Covering silat martial arts, Malaysia’s constitutional identity, emergency legislation, the South China Sea dilemma, ISIS discourse, zakat payment, the fallout from the 1MDB scandal and Malaysia’s green movement, Illusions of Democracy charts the complex and multi-faceted nature of political life in a semi-authoritarian state, breaking down the illusions which keep it functioning, to uncover the mechanisms which really underlie the paradoxical longevity of Malaysia’s political, economic and social system.

Tan, Lee. Buddhist Revitalization and Chinese Religions in Malaysia. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463726436.

Streszczenie:
Buddhist Revitalization and Chinese Religions in Malaysia tells the story of how a minority community comes to grips with the challenges of modernity, history, globalization, and cultural assertion in an ever-changing Malaysia. It captures the religious connection, transformation, and tension within a complex traditional belief system in a multi-religious society. In particular, the book revolves around a discussion on the religious revitalization of Chinese Buddhism in modern Malaysia. This Buddhist revitalization movement is intertwined with various forces, such as colonialism, religious transnationalism, and global capitalism. Reformist Buddhists have helped to remake Malaysia’s urban-dwelling Chinese community and have provided an exit option in the Malay and Muslim majority nation state. As Malaysia modernizes, there have been increasing efforts by certain segments of the country’s ethnic Chinese Buddhist population to separate Buddhism from popular Chinese religions. Nevertheless, these reformist groups face counterforces from traditional Chinese religionists within the context of the cultural complexity of the Chinese belief system.

Streszczenie:
Already celebrated as a busy entrepôt and the most glorious of the Malay kingdoms of the past, Melaka has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List (together with George Town) since 2008 on the strength of its multi-ethnic and multi-religious urban fabric. Yet, contrary to the expectations of heritage experts and aficionados, the global mission of safeguarding cultural heritages has become a tumultuous issue on the ground. In World Heritage and Urban Politics in Melaka, Malaysia: A Cityscape below the Winds how the World Heritage 'label' has been, and continue to be used by different actors – such as international organizations, nation states, and society at large – to generate new economic revenues as well as to attract tourists and investments for large-scale real estate development projects is analyzed, revealing the complex and often contradictory stories behind heritage designations in urban milieus.

Streszczenie:
The Perspective of Knowledge Society in Malaysia presents the state-of-the-art of the concept of Knowledge Society. In particular, the focus is given to the definition of a Knowledge Society (KS), the KS model and its significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context. The discussions are not only focusing on the Malaysias perspective, but also on the global initiatives to achieve the KS.The importance of knowledge and the rapid advancement of ICT were among the contributing factors towards the agenda. This book is a result of a doctoral research which aimed to develop and validate a model and indicators of a Knowledge Society from the Malaysian perspective. It examined the definition of a Knowledge Society (KS) and validated the KS model and its significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context. To date, there is lack of available definition of KS in Malaysia, as well as in other developing countries; lack of consensus in terms of KS dimensions; lack of KS indicators and the need for a holistic model of KS.Thus, the research involves the analysis of the concept and definition of KS, and the development of a model of KS comprising significant dimensions and indicators in the Malaysian context.A mixed approach methodology known as the Iterative Triangulation method was adopted which involved three phases. Thus, a number of experts were involved and in-depth analyses were conducted to achieve the objectives. This book may be used by policy makers to plan the development of a KS to meet the goals to be a developed nation by the year 2020.

Streszczenie:
The politics of nation-building has always been a central issue in Malaysia.Whilst the country has been able to sustain a relatively stable politics since the 1969 tragedy, and hence generate a rapid economic development (at least until the 1997 Asian economic crisis and later in the post 2008 General Election), the project of nation-building remains a basic national agenda yet to be fully resolved. The book explores the delicate process of nation-building in Malaysia in the post 1970s, especially in the context of the vision constructing the Bangsa Malaysia or a united Malaysian nation enshrined in Mahathirs Vision 2020 project which was introduced in 1991.It discusses the underlying socio-political parameters that shape and influence the politics of nation-building in the country and the construction of Bangsa Malaysia. As such, the book provides an alternative perspective in the analysis of ethnic relations and nation-building in Malaysia, thus broadens the understanding of Malaysian politics and society.
