Visual art is dynamically developed in Malaysia. The opening of many art galleries shows that people are more receptive to the visual arts as a part of their community. These collisions create the art sector as a career field. This phenomenon encouraged artists to exhibit their artworks in the gallery and economically increased the numbers of art collectors as buyers to support the art scene and build a new bridge of connection between artist, gallery, and buyer. There is interest growing yet little research in this area has been discovered. This research is to identify the relationship between the artist, gallery, and buyer which is related to the role, art activity involved, and economic factors based on the Islamic perspectives. These relations are common and have become the norm in the social environment of visual arts. Furthermore, the role, art activity involved, and economic factor between the relationship of the artist, gallery, and buyer are rarely been discussed. The gap identification will occur by using the qualitative method through observations on the content analysis. This research has the potential to extend the understanding of the relationship between the artist, gallery, and buyer from the Islamic perspective.

Loosely translated into English as “Between Two Classes”, this 1960 film chronicles the social class differences between two families; hence leading to endless misery. The author does not intend to elaborate on the two ‘social classes’ as depicted in the film, and would rather discuss ‘the two classes’ in the vehicle safety scenario in Malaysia; so that the latter can be deliberated and resolved in the best manner.

The trans-cultural consumption of Japanese Manga in Malaysia has prompted a significant amount of manga-influenced local works. As an outcome, traces of Japanese Manga can be found through its iconic art styles, storytelling and Japanese culture in these works. While fans show the positive response for these manga-influenced local works, the artists’ community shows the opposite response, in particular, related to the representation of the “typical Japanese manga-style”, resulting in the idea that these artists are turning away from the “local art style” which has been pioneered by the predecessors. The sentiment of Japanese Manga as a “single art style” contributed to this misconception on what constitutes a Japanese manga identity. In which the researcher proposes the introduction of ‘Essay Manga’ (コミックエッセイ or エッセイマンガ) as a way to divert the attention of Japanese Manga’s art style, by shifting to the other attributes of Japanese Manga which is the story. Essay Manga is a manga work that describes the events that happened around the manga artist but without any specifications towards manga visual conventions. To illustrate the importance of story versus art style in Essay Manga, the characteristics, forms, examples are sketched out trough the works of Hosokawa Tenten and Azuma Hideo. A section on Malaysia “local art style” is also discussed and ties in with the discussion of Manga. Eventually, the study argues that Japanese Manga is not limited to visual representation; instead, it is accommodated by its engaging storytelling, thus justifying Essay Manga’s potential as a multimodal literacy works.

Visual artwork is a platform to convey the meaning of the theme chosen in producing the work. However, it is difficult to understand the meaning through the symbols highlighted by the artist. Based on that situation the objective of this study is to collect information on visual artworks that apply animal symbols in the SI + SA 2020 exhibition. Five artists have been identified using animal symbols in the production of their artwork. This study is based on qualitative research approach using four types of data; namely the study of literature that explains the meaning and symbol of animals from the point of view of previous scientific writing. The second method is based on information obtained from the artist statement in the SI + SA 2020 Exhibition catalogue. The third method, the researcher interviewed (partially structured) five artists who have been selected using animal symbols in their artwork. The fourth method is to use the theory of Edmund Burke Feldman (1994) which has four stages in the theory, namely description, analysis, interpretation and evaluation. Triangulation (qualitative) studies are conducted to obtain more data and the validity of the findings obtained. The result shows an understanding of the meaning and symbol varies according to the needs of the individual or society. Some artists associate symbols in the context of personal experiences or observations of an event. Symbols can also carry meaning in the context of social sciences. In the production of their artworks, the use of symbols is a method to convey a message and an easier way to communicate. Conclusion clearly shows that the meaning of these animal symbols depends on different personal perceptions - different from the references studied. It can reveal to the general public that the use of animal symbols applied in the work can carry various meanings. Researchers suggest for future studies to conduct comprehensive research on the use of symbols in contemporary visual arts Malaysia.

The word ‘education’ comes from the Greek word ‘educare’ which means carrying out the potentials stored in the children's psyche to be guided in order for them to grow. It involves the dissemination of information or knowledge to, and acceptance by, a student which results in the receiver’s behavioral changes. The “Artist in Schools” (AiS) program was initiated by the researchers and became the platform for the collaboration between schools and artists aimed at increasing the students’ motivation in arts education. It encompasses the sharing of knowledge and experiences between the two groups. This paper is aimed at analyzing the students’ creativity and motivation in visual art by using the ARCS Motivational Model. Using the multi-case studies, nine secondary schools from Peninsular Malaysia were selected as the sample of the study. In-depth interviews, observation, and analysis of related documents were applied. The data were presented narratively. The result revealed that AiS was significantly functional and instrumental in enhancing and encouraging the level of creativity and motivation of the students in visual arts. The presence of photography around the 1890s when Malaya (now Malaysia) which was still under British rule was not an obstacle for the field of photography to grow to this day. Photography is a medium that can be used to produce creative works that have their own artistic elements (Sabki Md. Noh, M. Shariful Hafizal, 2017). The production of the work is produced according to technical procedures that require repeated experimentation to get the best results. Emphasizing the element or line element in the production of a work is none other than to show the relevance of the art element in photography, but also to focus on the use of pattern elements. In the form of social relationships, the artist tries to convey that when filming, visuals should always be taken with care so that every art element that is blended in the production of the work is not overwhelmed or runs away from the original concept. For the artist, this visual is a conversation about what is done as well as what can be conveyed, in addition to aiming to make the audience aware of the artist’s creative process while creating, which illustrates the meaning of the artist’s work which usually describes literary language in visual form. A comic is a form of sequential art that incorporates the integrated textual and visual aspects to reveal the desired meaning. It involves storytelling techniques with narrative elements as found in conventional literary works. Nowadays, comic art is flourishing in Malaysia with the advent of abundant comics from various old and new local authors. The uniqueness of Rejabhad, who was widely known as the King of Malaysian Cartoon, allows the researcher to analyse his comic works in the aspects of textual and visual designs. Prior studies have only discussed the outer layer of Malay comics. In fact, Malay comics especially Rejabhad’s works need to be examined more deeply to unravel their outer and inner layers of meaning. It is essential to fully understand the overall meaning of the work as well as to appreciate the author’s identity. This study focuses on one of Rejabhad’s particular comic work entitled Selendang Siti Rugayah (1997). The study uses a spiritual hermeneutic reading or exegesis (takwil) method is applied to obtain the inner or spiritual meaning of Selendang Siti Rugayah comic work. The results of this study allow the public to understand the inner meaning of the comic work and to appreciate the identity or personality of the author in his or her comic works. This study which based on the spiritual hermeneutic reading is very significant. It is a new exploration that may change the views on the creativity and wisdom of a Malay comic artist, Rejabhad, who had been appreciated and understood only based on the outer layer of reading.

For the first time in history, full-scale performances on musical compositions by a Malaysian composer, Razak Abdul Aziz, were presented through two academic recitals—27 July 2019 and 6 February 2020—at Orchestra Hall, Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA). These recitals consisted of solo and collaborative piano works, performed by me and a team of music collaborators that were specifically selected for this purpose. Razak Abdul Aziz, who is still actively composing, spent most of his career life as an academic, first serving for Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM), then Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) until his retirement in November 2019. Besides fulfilling the academic requirements set by Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) for my doctoral degree, I had chosen to perform works by this composer as he is generally known to the local music community as one of the earliest contemporary composers in the country (started composing in the 1980s). Yet, a full-scale performance of his works was long overdue, though he had the opportunities to have some of his works premiered and performed on local and international platforms as part of concert programmes. This artist project talks about the preparation I made for both recitals, briefly explaining the creative process I journeyed through and the challenges I faced during this time span, discussing each work I had selected for these academic recitals. These recitals could, perhaps, be the pioneers in studying and performing works by Razak Abdul Aziz, hoping to expand this effort to national and international levels.

Streszczenie:
Usage of code-switching in the scene of stand-up comedy is one of many creative strategies for comedians to deliver jokes and connect with a multilingual audience. However, not many employ this strategy, especially in Malaysia. Malaysian standup comedians rarely use code-switching in the delivery of their jokes as many use the local variety of English in achieving humour. Code-switching enables comedians to reach out to their audience and ensures their jokes are delivered more effectively and appreciated by the audience. Centring upon the use of codeswitching from English to Malay in two stand-up comedy performances by a wellknown Malaysian artist, Harith Iskander, this article delves into the frequently used forms and functions of code-switching found in the performances. Shana Poplack’s categorisation of code-switching and Hoffman’s functions of codeswitching frame the basis of this descriptive analysis. Both frameworks are used to determine the types of code-switching used and its functions. The findings show that intrasentential code-switching is the most used in one performance while tag switching is used most frequently in the other performances. The discrepancy of outcomes between the two performances is a result of language accommodation by the comedian for the target audience; the first performance is targeted to a Malay audience while the second has a more diverse audience. In terms of functions of code-switching in both performances, they differ only in frequencies; where code- switching is mostly used to talk about a particular topic and express group identity in the first performance while in the second, it mainly functions as interjection. The overall results show that the target audience influences the way code-switching is used by stand-up comedians in order to engage with them. The findings indicate that code-switching becomes less prominent when the audience is more diverse. This implies that the type of audience influences the extent and limits on code switching in stand-up comedy. This research can benefit stand-up comedians regarding the incorporation of code-switching in delivering jokes.

In this research, the authors discussed the impact of Covid-19 towards creative industries globally, issues with Malaysian creative industry and batik during Covid-19, batik paintings during modern Malaysian art in between 60s-70s, Kwan Chin’s style of Modern Malaysian batik paintings, exploration of Lim Anuar’s batik paintings in contemporary Malaysian art. Three significant batik paintings of the artist’s interest namely Gotong-Royong II, Best Friends, and Family Togetherness, produced in 2021 were discussed in terms of subject, form, and content. The researchers found that there are some influences from the Western art namely Cubism and Kwan Chin’s “crackle” effect in Lim Anuar’s batik paintings. This study also clarifies that local artists especially those with special needs who contributed to the development of contemporary Malaysian art should be given more opportunities for career expansion and voice in the creative industry during the post-pandemic era of Covid-19.

Painting for presentation Self-portraits have been revolutionised on several occasions. To achieve different effects in their portrait painting, the artist experimented and manipulated various media. Portraits are commonly defined in art as a likeness of a person, particularly a face till shoulders, but there are other ways to define a portrait and a painting. There is a lack of comprehension and interpretation of the topic. As a result, the purpose of this research is to trace the history of the self-portrait. From the 1940s to the 2000s, reviews were written in the form of a year-by-year chronology, identifying the approach used by local painters. Conclusion: The shift in the art movement from naturalistic approaches to a variety of styles resulted in new interpretations and opportunities for artists to create exciting portrait paintings. The development of a new understanding of the term "portrait painting" resulted in new interpretations and suggestions for a new way of presenting self-portraits, contributing to an alternative and creative way of practising portrait painting for Muslim artists.

Good governance concept plays an important role in the modern government system through creating sustainable public policies. Good governance is a concept that has been used globally, including in Malaysia. Ironically, Malaysia has the highest number of foreign laborers in Southeast Asian countries reaching approximately six million. The dependency is shockingly becoming a major concern for the government in formulating policy. In formulating policy, it is important to consider various stakeholders such as employers and Malaysian people. Therefore, the government is trying hard to find an equilibrium point in managing and the best way to reduce dependency on foreign labor. This article examined various issues and challenges in managing Malaysia’s foreign labor dependency, including the good governance concept perspective. This study uses a qualitative research approach. There are 7 key stakeholders identified through purposive sampling. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken to identify and understand the issues and challenges faced in the foreign labor governance. The findings found out that Malaysia’s foreign labor governance has overlapping governance arrangement, vague job scope, poor governance management system, and lack of mutual participation. Therefore, it is important to improve the foreign labor governance and policy in Malaysia because shortcomings in governance arrangements hinder the implementation of effective policies. The improvements are crucial to reduce the dependency on foreign labor and Malaysia’s development efforts will progress efficiently.

The halal industry in Malaysia plays a very significant role in its economic growth. It contributed about 8.1% to Malaysia’s GDP in 2020. Notwithstanding that, the applications of and compliance with halal certification among Muslim entrepreneurs remains significantly low. Ironically, Muslim entrepreneurs stand to suffer losses of up to 60% due to the absence of the halal logo on their products resulting from their low halal compliance behavior. This study proposes to identify factors affecting the compliance behavior among Muslim entrepreneurs in relation to the Malaysian halal certification. Data were collected through personally administered questionnaires that were distributed to 400 selected Muslim entrepreneurs in Malaysia. Research samples were chosen using random sampling techniques from the list provided by Small and Medium Enterprise Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp). This study used the structural equation model (PLS-SEM) analysis to process the effects of independent and mediator variables on the compliance behavior of the Muslim entrepreneurs. Result shows that there is a positive and significant effect of attitude, social influence, and awareness on the behavioral intention to comply with the Malaysian halal certification. Mediating factors of attitude and awareness show positive and significant relationships between social influences and the intention to comply with halal certification. Finally, intention also has a significant and positive effect on the compliance behavior of Malaysian Muslim entrepreneurs on halal certification. Research outcomes highlight the importance of local authorities and policymakers enhancing their strategies to ensure more Muslim entrepreneurs comply with the Malaysian halal certification. This study hopes to contribute to existing scholarship particularly on the compliance behavior of halal certification among Muslim entrepreneurs.

This research aims to analyze factors that could affect preferences for zakat rebates (i.e., zakat as a tax deduction) in Malaysia. In 1967, Malaysia’s Income Tax Act legalized zakat and made it tax-deductible. An applied quantitative method (SmartPLS) was used to construct a formative model on Muslims in Malaysia. Participants in the research were economics faculty members from universities in Malaysia. The results show that satisfaction affects preferences for zakat rebates and may prove that Muslims pay zakat because they are satisfied with their zakat institution. Other findings show that Malaysian Muslims only focus on income zakat and not on maal (wealth) zakat, which may be caused by the monthly zakat rebate system. This may be the first research paper that discusses zakat rebate preferences in Malaysia using a theory based on service quality and behavioral consequences. Besides P. Ramlee, Yasmin Ahmad’s name is synonymous with Malaysian cinema. The award-winning Malaysian filmmaker’s death impacted not only the Malaysian film industry but also those who admired her work. The late legendary filmmaker was a liberal Islamic Malaysian who explored Islam and humanity through interracial love stories. These filmic stories resonated with the ordinary Malaysians as they were compelling and courageous, often challenging the norms and conventions of other Malaysian films by daringly dramatizing and visualizing societal taboos and hypocrisies on the cinematic screen. The employment and integration of cosmopolitan themes of love, humanism, and humor in her films sets her apart from other local filmmakers. Yasmin’s films had attracted international attention and garnered awards at film festivals in Europe, North America, and Asia. This paper attempts to analyze her cinematic approaches of the construction of Malay subjectivity in all of her six films. For example, interracial relationships in Muallaf and Talentime is the dominant leitmotif of each, which connects the films with parallel events occurring in real-life Malaysia. The author interviewed production crew members who worked closely with Yasmin for her six films and tried to have a better understanding of the narrative motifs and themes in her films. These interviewees provided a comprehensive picture which drives her films, even now, to move beyond being focused on multiculturalism and to more socially, culturally and politically issues related to Malaysians.

This article examines some intriguing shifts in Islamic thinking on questions around citizenship and multiculturalism that have emerged in the Malaysian context in recent years. It does so in the light of the March 2008 election results and other recent political developments, notably the rise of Anwar Ibrahim’s PKR, and considers the implications for Malaysia. Of particular focus is the novel Islam Hadhari concept articulated by UMNO leader Prime Minister Badawi and the relatively doctrinaire Islamic state ideas of Islamist PAS. The article argues that these shifts in Islamic thinking are largely propelled by politics. Partly they are propelled by the logic, in a narrow political sense, imposed by the particular political circumstances that confront these Muslim-based political parties in Malaysia’s multi-ethnic, multi-religious setting. Partly the impetus is derived from growing general concerns in Malaysia that a new and more stable and enduring settlement of the issues associated with the country’s notorious horizontal divisions must be found if Malaysia is to avoid a disastrous plunge into communal conflict or tyranny.

Contemporary Young Talent (CYT) is a visual arts competition organized by the National Visual Arts Gallery (NVAG) which is the most prestigious in Malaysia. Its 40 years of organization have successfully produced many renowned artists who are now pioneers in the Malaysian and regional visual arts arena. In line with the strength of CYT as a reflection of the future of Malaysian visual arts and the role of art as a cultural vehicle, the objective of the study is to analyze and further dismantle the latest visual art works of Malaysian artists from the perspective of national culture through the CYT platform from 2000 to 2013. This study aims to clearly understand the visual elements and features that are the cultural identity in the latest Malaysian visual arts. This objective was achieved through observation and reading of CYT catalog books published by NVAG, scholarly books, journals, and relevant previous studies as well as interviews on three artists and academics who won the CYT competition. This study uses a qualitative approach, guided by the 4 components of the theory of art criticism Feldman E.B. (1994) namely description, analysis, interpretation and evaluation. 9 works will be analyzed from the aspects of ‘form’ and ‘meaning’. The results of the work analysis will be compared with national cultural elements (data triangulation) and then justify and classify CYT visual art works based on the 3 cores of the National Cultural Policy, namely, the culture of the region's indigenous peoples, other appropriate cultures and Islamic culture through descriptive text.). This study is important to create awareness, deeper appreciation and provide knowledge to art admirers in understanding the meaning and approach and content in the latest visual artwork. The results of the study through descriptive texts explain the existence of national cultural elements and their relationship in selected contemporary works of CYT (2000-2013).

End of the Cold War had contributed to the plentitude of firearms within the Southeast Asia region which led to the increase of small arms and light weapon (SALW) smuggling activity. For decades till today, most countries in this region continue to face internal armed conflicts. Malaysia strategic location, situated at the world’s busiest sea lane trades had resulted in rampant cross border crime of SALW smuggling activities. Malaysia’s strict firearms law disallows the possession of SALW without a license. In spite of such strict SALW legislations, these smugglings continues. What are the factors that contribute to the increase of SALW smuggling into Malaysia? The main objective of this article is to scrutinise the external factors that promote the increase of SALW smuggling into Malaysia. This study employs a qualitative method with primary data obtained through preliminary and formal interviews with Malaysian and Thailand security agencies, crime desk journalist, non-governmental organizations, smugglers, former separatist member, former Thai residents, informers and prisoners of SALW related. Whilst secondary data was acquired via credible research. The study found that the national factors and non-national factors have influenced the increase of SALW smuggling into Malaysia.

The National Art Gallery (NAG) introduced the Young Contemporary Award (YCA), also known as Bakat Muda Sezaman (BMS), in the early 1970s with the goal of improving the creative thinking of the art scene. The platform has resulted in a significant percentage of notorious local artists producing remarkable artworks. Nevertheless, with the fast advancement of the modern era in Malaysia, the intention of presenting national culture and traditions especially the Islamic values through visual art among the Muslim artists appears to dissipate. The new generation of Muslim artists' preference for western and universal styles led to the abandonment of Islamic symbols. They appeared to ignore their own cultural motifs and ideals without concerning the impact of their decisions on the next generation of Muslim artists. Thus, this paper will discuss the examples of Islamic elements depicted in the Young Contemporary Award artworks based on the principles from the National Culture Congress 1971 using the qualitative method. It is important for these visual arts to be studied for their contribution in Islamic art. These findings can be used as source of reference to improve the content of Malaysian art making.

Streszczenie:
The Malaysian general election in March 2008 raised an interesting and new phenomenon. For the first time since independence in 1957, the ruling alliance known as the National Front (Barisan Nasional, BN) failed to secure two thirds of seats in parliament and lost control of five of Malaysia’s 13 states. This was due to the challenge presented by the new opposition alliance known as the Alternative Front (Barisan Alternatif, BA) or the People’s Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat, PK) which won more than 36% of seats in parliament and gained control of the five states. In the 2004 election, BN secured the largest ever percentage of seats in parliament with 91%. What is interesting is that it seems that this significant increase in support for the opposition is due to their offer to change the way minorities and ethnicity is managed. They propose a move from “Bumiputera Supremacy”, or affirmative action for the approximately 65% of “Bumiputera” Malaysians (the rest being largely of Chinese or Indian ethnicity), to “The People’s Supremacy”, which involves eradicating affirmative action based on ethnicity, basing it instead on need, for instance need due to poverty. This would potentially increase the likelihood of justice and equality for all ethnic or racial groups. This paper connects the phenomenon of change, as seen in the about turn in the results between the 2004 and 2008 elections, to the more global trend in which minorities are standing up to demand their rights in this era of globalization, and to the challenge multiculturalism presents to parts of the Muslim world such as Malaysia. Malaysia, a Muslim majority nation that has formally declared Islam the official state religion with Yang di-Pertuan Agong (the King) as Head of the State and symbol of Islam, is one example, though not necessarily representative, of how Islam and Muslims manage minorities and identity or multiculturalism within the process of globalization.

The objectives of this research are to identify the factors influence the green purchase intention and to determine the relationships between the factors (determinants) and green purchase intention among Malaysian consumers. A descriptive research was conducted to address the research objectives. The survey research was undertaken among the Malaysians who are members of one of the Activist Groups in which is a Non-government Organization (NGO) in Malaysia. The adopted sampling method was simple random sampling. There were 230 usable questionnaires which were analyzed with the Statistical Package for Social Science Software version 19. Five hypotheses were developed for this research and all hypotheses were tested using Pearson Correlation Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis. The results of the study indicated that government initiative has the most significant influence on green purchase intention among Malaysian consumers. In contrast, eco-label failed to show significant relationship to green purchase intention. The finding of insignificant impact of eco-label on the green purchase intention from this study is in contrast with the finding from Nik Abdul Rashid (2009) because both studies were carried out among Malaysian consumers.

Abstract: At the zenith of the Mahathir era, amidst the economic boom and rapid development of the early 1990s, Malaysian art exhibitions were charting a novel path in the arena of installation and performance art. This paper will closely examine three seminal installation art exhibitions, namely Sook Ching (1990), 2 Installations (1991), and Warbox Lalang Killing Tools (1994), where some of the artists involved chose to perform and/or collaborate with dancers and theatre makers, culminating in some of the earliest experiments with performance art in Malaysia. What sets them apart from other installation exhibitions of that period is their use of performance as a tool to confront, unsettle, and challenge audiences in institutional spaces, thereby opening up new possibilities for experimentation and risk-taking.

Art's function has allowed artists to express themselves for centuries. Art was once created solely for religious reasons, especially with the rise of the Catholic Church. The Industrial Revolution and the church's declining influence in the 19th century opened people's eyes to emotion and imagination, which Romanticists later portrayed artistically. This led to nature mysticism and landscape paintings. Similarly, St. Ignatius' Ignatian Spirituality corresponds to the divine yearning in nature. Spirituality and art can go hand in hand, say Jesuit priest-artists. Mystical landscapes reveal humanity's spiritual connection to nature. Artists explore emotion and spirituality through monochromatic art because it can provoke deeply personal experiences My art explores landscape's spirituality. I like how it evokes spirituality, longing, and comfort. Keywords: Spirituality; Papar Landscape eISSN: 2398-4287 © 2022. The Authors. This paper examines whether or not there is any relationship between executive directors’ compensation and the effectiveness and efficiency ratios of non-financial companies in Malaysia. Two variables are used in this study as independent variables (IVs), that is, company effectiveness ratio (return on equity) and company efficiency ratio (asset turnover); and six control variables, that is, firm visibility, liquidity, profitability, working capital, firm net-worth, and leverage. The executive directors’ compensation is the dependent variable (DV). Data are collected from 360 observations (120 companies’ annual reports for 3 years). STATA software analysis is used to examine the collected data. The results show that company effectiveness is one of the determinants of executive directors’ compensation but not company efficiency. Firm visibility, firm net-worth, and profitability also have strong relationships with executive directors’ compensation. However, liquidity and leverage do not show any significant relationship with executive directors’ compensation in Malaysian listed companies. This study focuses on Malaysia during the period of 2012 to 2014 because Malaysia is one of the developing countries in Asia, and in 2010, the Malaysian economy exhibited strong signs of recovery from the global financial crisis. However, the period between 2012 and 2014 was a critical period for the Malaysian economy; the Ringgit experienced depreciation and was devalued by more than 40%, which negatively affected the Malaysian economy as a whole. In addition, this study examines new variables in the Malaysian context, that is, firm efficiency, firm visibility, and firm net-worth.

This article seeks to explore the impact of digital technologies upon the material, conceptual and ideological premises of the colonial archive in the digital era. This analysis is pursued though a discussion of creative work produced during an international, multidisciplinary artist workshop in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, that used digital material from colonial photographic archives in the Netherlands to critically investigate the ways national, transnational and personal (hi)stories in the former colonies in Southeast Asia have been informed and shaped by their colonial past. The analysis focuses on how the artists’ use of digital media contests and reconfigures the use, truth value and power of the colonial archive as an entity and institution. Case studies include: Thai photographer Dow Wasiksiri, who questions the archive's mnemonic function by substituting early twentieth-century handcrafted association techniques with digital manipulation; Malaysian artist Yee I-Lann, who compresses onto the same picture plane different historical moments and colonial narratives; and Indonesian photographer Agan Harahap, who recomposes archival photographs into unlikely juxtapositions disseminated through social media. By repurposing colonial archival material and circulating their work online such a re-imag(in)ing of Southeast Asia not only challenges the notions of originality, authenticity, ownership and control associated with such archives, but also reclaims colonial-era (hi)stories, making them part of a democratic, expanding, postcolonial archive.

Halal Certification provides an opportunity for food premise operators to prove that the food provided complies with the laws set in Malaysia. Although there are laws and regulations related to halal implementation, the misuse of halal logos such as halal logos forgery, misuse of Islamic images, and using expired certificates still arises within the industry. This study's goal is to shed light on Malaysia's legal guidelines for halal food premises and halal enforcement. This study applies a qualitative approach while the data is collected through content analysis. The content analysis has been carried out involving a few provisions of law and official documents related to halal enforcement of food premises. Those documents are the Malaysian Halal Certification Procedure Manual 2020, Trade Descriptions Act 2011, Food Act 1983, and Local Government Act 1976. The finding of this study shows that Halal enforcement in Malaysia is based on multiple provisions, regulation, and act as there is no halal-specific act governing halal certification matters. This has led to ineffective enforcement as JAKIM and JAIN have limited power to perform halal enforcement, especially towards the misused of the halal logo, deceiving or misleading Muslim consumers with Quranic verses and halal self-claim. As a result, halal issues have not been properly handled and solved. To have a deeper understanding of halal enforcement, it is advised that the future study examine other relevant aspects of Malaysian law and regulation governing halal topics. Additionally, the researcher may investigate the operators of food premises’ knowledge of halal enforcement, including their knowledge of raw materials, and their understanding of the penalties for breaking the law.

This paper looks at the genesis and development of the Jama’ah Islah Malaysia (JIM), a modernist-reformist Islamist organisation that today has played a vital and visible role in the political landscape of Malaysian politics. Little is known about the early genesis of JIM, and how it began in the 1970s and 1980s as a student-based cadre organisation, created by Malaysian Muslim students studying abroad in Europe and North America. JIM’s roots therefore lie in the Islamic Representative Council (IRC) that was a semi-underground student-cadre movement that was created outside Malaysia, and which aimed to bring about the Islamisation of Malaysian society through the process of social and political mobilisation. Working through the archives of JIM today and interviewing the foundermembers of JIM and the IRC, this paper is the first historical account of the formation and development of IRC and JIM to be published.

Public performances revolving around public transportation continue to be a common sight in transit areas such as London's Tube and the New York subway. Malaysia is even taking a step further by allowing various performing art events to take place at stations and in transit. This exploration is carried out to investigate the possibilities of utilising public transportation services to benefit performing artists in Kuala Lumpur. This research argues that this symbiotic co-existence between transit areas and serving arts practitioners, with the case study of the Kertapi Sarong activity, would foster vibrant arts lifestyle community whereby these efforts will continue to enrich public transport commute experiences. After the Asian financial crisis in 1997, firms listed on Bursa Malaysia were allowed to repurchase their shares on the open market. The number of companies engaged in share buyback is increasing and has become a tool to stabilize price by signaling undervaluation of the share. However, studies on share buyback in Malaysia are limited to the price performance surrounding the buyback events. This study aims to fill this gap by examining long-run price performance after the actual share buyback event over a sampling period of 2 years from 2009 to 2010 for Malaysian firms listed on FTSE Bursa Malaysia. There is no evidence to conclude that there exist long-term abnormal returns using the calendar-time portfolio approach that support the inefficient market hypothesis. On the contrary, buy-and-hold method was found to be significant supporting that the Malaysian stock market is semi-strong efficient.

Streszczenie:
The important aspect of business performance among women-owned SMEs in Malaysia is scarce and still underperformed. Hence, Malaysian SMEs needs to empower the entrepreneurial competencies among women-owned entrepreneurs and the support of Malaysian government. In this study, the questionnaire survey has been selected as the data collection method for this research. A total of 116 responses from the women-owned entrepreneur in Malaysia were obtained and analysis was carried out using Smart PLS software to generate findings. The results reveal that strategic competencies, opportunity competencies and conceptual competencies have significantly impacted the business performance of women-owned entrepreneurs among SMEs in Malaysia. The moderating effect of government support on the relationship between strategic competencies, opportunity competencies and business performance proved to be significant. Surprisingly, the interaction of government support between conceptual competencies and business performance is not supported in the findings. Hence, the current paper will further provide a women-owned SME with substantial information to focus on fostering entrepreneurial competencies within their respective companies to ensure peak business performance. Findings from this study anticipated being extremely useful to the Malaysian government, in specific Policy Makers. With these results, authorities will be better informed when implementing new strategies and programmes to enhance the skills of entrepreneurs, which will result in better business performance.
