Streszczenie:
Abstract Magic and literature are mostly understood as mutually exclusive domains. Magic is taken to be part of religious life, an aspect of the human desire to overcome the order of things and strive for the supernatural. Literature, on the other hand, is commonly described as an artistic endeavor and thus associated with secular art and culture. For this reason, it is possible to read about magic in literature, but it is very rare to read literature as magic. This article aims to reverse that trend. It entails a contextual and critical discussion of Carl Einstein’s 1912 novel Bebuquin oder die Dilettanten des Wunders, suggesting that this novel is best understood as magic, that is, as a sincere and radical attempt to reach the supernatural and transform the present. The article also suggests that the avant-garde is precisely the context for a renewed appreciation of literature and religion.

Accompanying Keith Thomas's account of its defeat by scientific rationality, supernatural magic, which I designate magic1, receives scholarly attention denied the stigmatized magic2—stage magic and the “gulling” practices popularized by Tondon's con artists and pickpockets, who exploited distraction through sleights of hand, body, language, and thought. As Othello's paratheatrical “entertainment unconscious,” competing and collaborating with theater, magic2 informs the play's sensationalism, gull's gallery, source-tale revisions, and transformation of much traditional tragedy into a genre less about epistemology than about perception. Practicing early modern magicians' fundamentals—conveyance (legerdemain, misdirection) and confederacy—and exposing his own tricks, the entertainer-villain Iago's tactics and handkerchief prop illuminate phenomena such as “inattentional blindness,” important for cognitive psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, and performance. His “helpmeet” wife and apprentice Emilia emulates his misdirecting visual and conversational skills, until their team, echoing a celebrity magician-and-animal partnership, finally implodes. Situated between Montaigne's and Adorno's views on distraction, Othello transforms wonder from tragic affect into the capitalist distraction pleasure of a discursive entertainment revolution. Its hero-dupe himself adopts magic2 technology for a spectacular suicide—arguably the suicide of tragedy's tradition.

Streszczenie:
Magic realism or magical realism is a genre where magical or unreal elements play a natural part in an otherwise realistic environment. Although it is most commonly used as a literary genre, magic realism also applies to film and the visual arts. An example of magic realism occurs when a character in the story continuous to be alive beyond the normal length of life and this is subtly depicted by the character being present throughout many generations. On the surface the story has no clear magical attributes and everything is conveyed in a real setting and breaks the rules of our real world. Magic realism is term used to describe the everyday reality with supernatural events. The two terms ‘magic’ and ‘realism’ have become to intertwined that strange, unearthly happenings become almost an accepted, even normal part of daily life. Magic realism considers being a postcolonial phenomenon. Magic realism is to be found only in the post colonial texts. The writers of colonized countries incorporate magic realism in their writings as a mode of resistance to western rationalism. There is no place for logic in magic realism. In countries like India, People believe in myths and ghosts as they believe in history. Magical things do not constitute the Indian culture. There is realism also. Diaspora writers’ characters make use of magic realism to escape to a world of fantasy for it provides them pleasure, relief, and an escape from the excruciating pain they experience in an alien land. The term magical realism was introduced by Franz Roh, a German art critic in 1952. When Roh coined the term the mean it to create an art category the strayed from the strict guidelines of realism, but the term did not name an artistic movement until the 1940s in Latin America and the Caribbean. Magic realism or Magical realism is a genre of 20th century English literature. This paper deals Magical Realism in Indian literature and its authors.

There is a long tradition among scholars to establish a link between the practice of black magic and culture. Black magic is seen as a category under which various beliefs and practices which are usually separated from religion and science are placed. These practices are most of the time associated with evil and demons. It has been observed that the role of black magic and witchcraft influenced Western societies to a large extent as it was not only the subject of literature but also of the interest to the whole society. Fears of witchcraft and black magic grew more intense and consequently led to “witch hunts” in many Western societies. In this paper, I argue that in English literature, the practice of black magic and witchcraft has been represented as a cultural practice. My paper provides a quick survey to trace back the practices of witchcraft in selected literary works from English literature. In my analysis, I focus of how the practice of black magic and sorcery is embedded within the texts to reflect people’s obsession of it. For the sake of my argument, I will use the word “Maleficium” as an umbrella term to refer to all the practices, which include: Black magic, witchcraft, sorcery, necromancy, and voodoo

No society ever existed without performing music, and most cultures display many variants of music. Music also played and still plays an important part in different religious rites. From the days of yore, music has been intimately connected with the cult, whether it is performed as epic or lyric expressions. The Old Norse society was no exception to this statement and early finds from as far back as the Bronze Age reveal that different instrument were used in daily life. The most conspicuous specimens from this time are the bronze lures, which probably are depicted on the rock-carvings. All these examples emphasise the character of music in Old Norse literature as connected with the magic aspect of religion, and particularly with divination. This does not mean that all music in the Viking Age was performed with a magic purpose, but what has survived in the sources is the conspicuous role of music as something that affected the human mind to the extent that it was experienced as a magic feeling, even able to reveal the future.

Streszczenie:
It is undeniable that literature reflects much about the society that produces it. The give-and-take relationship between a society and its literature is especially interesting when medieval texts are considered. Because most medieval plots and characters are variants of existing stories, the ways that the portrayals change has the potential to reveal much about the differences between medieval societies separated by distance and time. Changes to the treatment of these recurring characters and their stories can reveal how the attitudes of medieval society changed over time. Perceptions of magic and attitudes toward its female practitioners, both real and fictional, changed drastically throughout the Middle Ages among clergy members and the ruling class. Historically, as attitudes toward women became more negative, they were increasingly prohibited from receiving a formal education and from gaining or maintaining positions traditionally associated with feminine magical power, such as healer, midwife, or wise woman. As the power of the Church grew and attitudes changed throughout the Middle Ages, women’s power in almost all areas of life experienced a proportional decrease. Using a combination of historical and literary sources, this paper will explore whether this decrease in power is evident in literary portrayals of magical female characters in medieval literature. Specifically, it will examine the agency and potency, or the intrinsic motivation and effectiveness within the story, respectively, of female characters within medieval narratives, comparing the characters to their earlier iterations. This research will offer a unique perspective on the roles of magical women in medieval literature.

Streszczenie:
This dissertation examines five figures associated with magic in contemporary literature: voodoo ghosts, magicians, automata, fortune tellers, and freaks. While glancing at a number of novels, this study chiefly examines five books published between 1972 and 2001: Ishmael Reed's Mumbo Jumbo, Allen Kurzweil's A Case of Curiosities, Michael Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, Susan Sontag's The Volcano Lover, and Thomas Wharton's Salamander. In these novels, figures of magic display different aspects of the work of representation, coded as magic, as well as the effect of magic on representation. In fiction, magic localizes enchantment as an inherent product of the representational act, as spectators or readers are compelled to think about the relation of perception to deception during magical performances.
Magical characters highlight the problems of literary bodies, which in these texts are bizarre, exotic, and glamorous. Ishmael Reed employs voodoo ghosts to liberate the novel from cultural essentialist representational practices; voodoo, the marriage of form to spirit, is plural and polymorphous. As celebrations of trickery, voodoo bodies do not reflect inner character. Similarly, magicians are sleight-of-hand artists or escapologists who confound perception. In Chabon's novel, magicians and super heroes evade the bounds of representation through crafts of illusion. Magicians invent visual illusions; analogous to authors, magicians animate inert forms such as golems or automata. The automaton, a spectacular parody of the human body, questions whether any represented body is alive or not. In Kurzweil's A Case of Curiosities, readers wonder about the veracity of the automaton as extensions of or surrogates for novelistic characters. Fortune tellers, on the other hand, turn bodies into objects of destiny. Tarot readers, such as Efrosina in The Volcano Lover, interpret bodies through visual texts in relation to the past and future. By contrast, in Salamander, the freak poses riddles to readers regarding the authenticity of the body. Not unlike automata or voodoo fetishes, freaks are human puzzles that resemble narrative invention rather than mimetic representations of character. Contemporary novels articulate magical bodies as spirit cabinets, ineffable spaces rendered briefly and spectacularly visible for the delight of readers.

Streszczenie:
Anthropology and literary criticism can interact fruitfully in the investigation of theoretical, general and specific issues concerning literature. Anthropological concepts of magic and ritual are useful to account for those fictions which defy neat labels and sit at the crossroad between the fantastic and the mimetic impulses. Furthermore, the reading process of such fictions can be interpreted as a liminal experience, whereby the reader’s consciousness is ritualized. Adopting a phenomenological stance and a socio-anthropological methodology, the thesis presents the author’s auto-ethnography of reading, also integrating the latest findings of cognitive linguistics and psychology of fiction into the theoretical reflection. Other conceptual tools, such as ideas concerning performative language, the hero quest and epiphany, metaphor and symbolism, are elaborated in order to illustrate the reading of ‘hybrid’ fictions, and how the reader is actively involved in the process. Moreover, three sample novels are analysed in the light of concepts of magic from a thematic and structural point of view, as texts which posit the issue of the de-reification of the real and of the imagination itself as a critique of the discourses of modernity. Overall the thesis supports an ecological view of the (literary) imagination, conceived as a relational process whereby nature and culture are seen as co-extensive and not in opposition to each other.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines adaptations of Thomas Malory’s 'Morte Darthur' produced for children between 1862 and 1960. It aims to interrogate the complex link between children and the Arthurian legend that has existed since J. T. Knowles’s first adaptation for a juvenile audience in 1862, and which remains strong today. By comparing authors’ alterations to their medieval source, I explore the ‘child’ as a discursive construct, as a mutable and protean category that is equally revelatory of assumptions about adult identity as about childhood itself. Tracing adaptations of the 'Morte' chronologically, I examine the ways in which they participate in wider cultural dialogues relating to national heritage, citizenship, mental health and masculine development through their representations of childhood. Against the backdrop of empire, changes in educational policy, the increasing application of psychology to childcare and two world wars, the diverse ways in which this versatile text is offered as relevant to children illuminates both shifting conceptions of childhood and the complex relationship between adapters and their imagined child readers. This study contributes to enquiries regarding the refashioning of Arthur and the function and manifestation of medievalism, and to studies of children’s literature, by illuminating the ways in which the elusive ‘child’ has been used to focus shifting perceptions regarding the essence and significance of the Arthurian legend over a century.

In this paper, a control oriented rational tire model is developed and incorporated in a two-track vehicle dynamics model for the prospective design of vehicle dynamics controllers. The tire model proposed in this paper is an enhancement over previous rational models which have taken into account only the peaking and saturation behavior disregarding all other force generation characteristics. Simulation results have been conducted to compare the dynamics of a vehicle model equipped with a Magic Formula tire model, a rational tire model available in the literature and the present rational tire model. It has been observed that the proposed tire model results in vehicle responses that closely follow those obtained with the Magic Formula even for extreme driving scenarios conducted on roads with low adhesion coefficient.

Abstract High-risk organizations are continuously striving to minimize risks and establish a safe working environment. While technology and high standards are crucial, a core aspect of an effective safety management system lies in safe human behavior. The primary aim of this study was to provide an understanding of some of the human and organizational factors that influence safety behavior of employees in the oil and gas industry. Transformational and transactional styles of leadership were explored along with assessing safety culture with a view to understand their influence on safety behaviors. The commonly investigated form of safety behavior is Safety Compliance, which is seen as the answer to achieving positive safety results. However, in order to go above and beyond, in other words, taking ownership and accountability of safety, another form of behavior is crucial, called the Safety Citizenship Behavior (SCB), which has gained a lot of attention in the past years. In addition to leadership styles, various leader attributes (e.g. leader fairness, trust) were examined in terms of their influence in safety context. Data was gathered from about 200 employees in the oil and gas sector using the highly recognized measures like the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire. Mediation and moderation effects were tested based on Baron and Kenny's guidelines. The results highlighted interesting findings as they threw light on the pivotal role played by trust in influencing safety behaviors, particularly SCBs. Similar effect was seen with regards to fairness and personal identification with the leader; due to its strong correlation with trust. In addition, safety culture, which has been emphasized in the safety/risk literature over 40 years also showed up as a stronger predictor of safety compliance, whereby subordinates’ safety compliance was reinforced with a strong safety culture. The augmentation effect of transformational leadership, which is known to build on transactional leadership were also investigated, however, the results did not offer as much support as in the literature. This brings into question the considerable emphasis placed on transformational leadership, particularly where prioritization of safety is key. The results will aid organizations analyze their safety leadership training programs. Further, it also helps leaders understand key attributes they need to embed in interactions with their immediate and wider teams to bring about positive impact on safety. Lastly, the study also highlights the concept of SCB, which is a significant aspect in building an accountable and mindful safety culture.

Integration of the driver’s steering input together with the four-wheel steering system (4WS) in order to improve the vehicle’s dynamic behavior with respect to yaw rate and body sideslip angle is possible with intelligent vehicle dynamics control systems. The goal of this study is to develop a fuzzy logic controller for this purpose. In the first stage of the study, a three-degree of freedom nonlinear vehicle model including roll dynamics is developed. The Magic Formula is applied in order to formulate the nonlinear characteristics of the tires. In the design of the fuzzy logic controller, a two-dimensional rule table is created based on the error and on the change in the error of sideslip angle, which is to be minimized. Fuzzy logic controlled model is then compared with front wheel steering vehicle and the vehicles having different control strategies that have previously been studied in literature. Simulations indicate that fuzzy logic controlled vehicle can provide zero body sideslip angle in transient motion and quick response in terms of yaw rate during steady state cornering and lane change maneuvers.

The epic and lyrical works of Babur, who wrote and created excellent works in Cigatai after Alishir Navai,, have reached our time. Although Babur is more famous in the history of literature for his work "Baburnama", his lyrics have always been in the center of attention with their artistic features. Babur proved that he was not only a powerful ruler, but also a poet with delicate feelings and fragile feelings, by depicting human feelings and thoughts more powerfully and beautifully than they were, adding thousands of colors to them with the magic of words and creating beautiful works from each other. The innate talent of the poet plays an important role in the expression of this beauty andelegance, because at this time human feelings and experiences are compared with inanimate natural objects and abstract concepts. In these comparisons, the innate talent of the writer to express any idea in a figurative way is clearly evident. These works, which are expressions of the poetic power of the word and the mysterious world of colors, attract more attention due to the artistic expression style, have stood and are still standing above time.

Abstract Simulation and Virtualization of robotic systems and Autonomous Guides Vehicle (AGV) is one of the most important aspects in the future development of such systems. This paper will contribute a framework and an entire toolchain to present a holistic and systematic approach for development of future robotic AGV systems. In the first section this paper will present the first descriptive study which is the literature survey and the definition of the scientific gaps and research questions related to systematic approaches based on Systems Engineering and Model Based System Engineering. In section number two this paper will present a new approach and framework called “Munich Agile Concept for Modell based Systems Engineering (MAGIC)” to develop entire virtual tool chains for virtualization and simulation of different functions in a virtual environment. This aspect is one of the important contributions of this paper. MBSE is based on three important core pillar which is 1) Methods/Processes, 2) Language and 3) Systems. The purpose of the new developed Munich Agile Concept Approach is to handle the complexity over the entire holistic information framework for simulation and virtualization of AGV function development from the system requirement definition process up to the test and validation of the system. Furthermore, with MAGIC there is a holistic approach and method to carry out the entire virtual development process by means of capable simulation and virtualization tools based on MAGICLOOP. The Munich Agile Concept contains six different levels which are System Requirement-, System Functional-, System Architecture-, System Validation-, System Test and the System-Usage-Level. For defining the first three-level, a graphical language called System Modelling Language (SysML) has been applied. The third chapter will apply the developed approach in an industrial Use Case which is based on simulation and virtualization of AGVs in a manufacturing environment. The last chapter will summaries the results of the applied Method. A lot of verification and testing are required robot and AGV development. ore the autonomous driving system can be deployed. However, testing in a real world will consume a lot of resources and may also bring security risks. Therefore, simulation is particularly important for autonomous driving systems.

Even if there are many software and mathematical models available in the literature to analyze the dynamic performance of Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs), it is always difficult to identify or collect the required vehicle parameters from the vehicle manufacturer for simulation. In analyzing the vehicle handling performance, a difficult and complex task is to use an appropriate tire model that can accurately characterize the ground-wheel interaction. Though, the well-known ‘Magic Formula’ is widely used for this purpose, it requires expensive test equipment to estimate the Magic Formula coefficients. The design of longitudinal and lateral controllers plays a significant role in path tracking of an UGV. Though the speed of the vehicle may remain almost constant in most of the maneuvers such as lane change, Double Lane Change (DLC), step steer, cornering, etc., design of the lateral controller is always a challenging task as it depends on the vehicle parameters, road information and also on the steering actuator dynamics. Although a mathematical model is an abstraction of the actual system, the controller is designed based on this model and then deployed on the real system. In this paper, a realistic mathematical model of the vehicle considering the steering actuator dynamics has been developed by calculating the cornering stiffnesses from the basic tire information and the vertical load on each tire. A heading angle controller of the UGV has been considered using the Point-to-Point navigation algorithm. Then, these controllers have been implemented on a test platform equipped with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and a Global Positioning System (GPS). A wide range of experiments such as J-Turn, lane change and DLC have also been conducted for comparison with the simulation results. Sensitivity analysis has been carried out to check the robustness and stability of the controller by varying the cornering stiffness of tires, the most uncertain parameter. The longitudinal speed of the vehicle is assumed to vary between a minimum value of 1.4 m/s and a maximum value of 20 m/s. It has been found that when the vehicle is moving at a constant velocity of 3.2 m/s, a heading angle change of 20 degrees can be achieved within 3 seconds with 2% steady state error using a proportional controller. It was observed that at lower speeds, the controller is more sensitive to the steering actuator dynamics and at higher speeds, the controller is more sensitive to the cornering stiffness of tires.

Streszczenie:
This research builds upon ideas introduced and discussed many years ago that focus on the problem of visualizing multiple attributes on surfaces in a single view. Here we present a new perspective to this problem as well as a solution that allows us to design, visualize and interact with multivariate data on surfaces. Building upon multidisciplinary aspects, we present a new way to visualize multivariate data on surfaces by exploiting the concept of layering. First, we introduce a new real-time rendering technique and the concept of Decal-Maps, which fills a gap in the literature and allow us to create 2D visual representations such as glyphs that follow the surface geometry. Building on this technique, we propose the layering framework to facilitate the multivariate visualization design on surfaces. The use of this concept and framework allows us to connect and generalize concepts established in flat space, such as 2D maps, to arbitrary surfaces. Decal-maps opens up other new possibilities such as the use of interaction techniques. Here we demonstrate this potential by introducing a new interaction technique that allows us to explore multivariate data and to create customized focus+context visualizations on surfaces. This is achieved by introducing a new category of lenses, Decal-Lenses, which extends the concept of magic-lenses from flat space to general surfaces. Finally, this thesis showcases the process of multivariate visual design and data exploration through a series of examples from several domains such as Medicine and Geology.
