If experience is the best teacher, then reading may be the best life experience. Reading books is a unique experience that will take you on a journey into another world. You will learn about people you have never met but who have already left an indelible mark and a legacy that inspired so many generations. Reading is an institution devoted wholly to the mind and the imagination. Books contain spiritual values of all ages and we perceive them as simultaneously present and vitally alive. Each book is a precious treasure with countless implications and the reader is ultimately left to discover not only the subject at hand but also the deep layers of the spell cast by a tremendous force with its innermost meaning for each individual with a curious mind and its probing questions.

Mary Pope Osborne is a prominent contemporary children’s book author, best- known for her Magic tree house series. She creates an imaginary world in which the books in the magic tree house literally transport her child protagonists, Jack and Annie, to other times and places. Osborne’s books are written simply so that young readers can follow a story that engages them, as they learn about diverse cultures, history and science. In Buffalo before breakfast (1999), the eighteenth book in the Magic tree house series, Jack and Annie travel to a Lakota camp on the Great Plains of North America in the 1800s, before the arrival of white prospectors, settlers and soldiers. By recreating the life of a traditional Lakota camp, Osborne gives readers a version of Native American history that has been silenced and marginalised. This article will examine her representation of Lakota history, culture and spirituality in Osborne’s Buffalo before breakfast, and cite research to support the story she tells.

This book offers a bounty of fresh materials for both storytime novices and veterans, including songs, flannel boards, rhymes, stories, and recommended book lists to engage the audience. Updating their 2009 Storytime Magic, authors MacMillan and Kirker use the same format for this volume, but with new materials. As with the earlier title, chapters have themes, such as “All About Me,” “Fairy Tales and Castles,” and “The Natural World.” The new materials in these chapters are useful when planning storytimes. Some activities and flannel boards are tied to specific books. For example, Toni Yuly’s Early Bird (2009, 19) is the focus of a flannel board, and an ALA web link is provided for flannel board patterns, which makes it easy to use. Song lyrics listed in the book can be sung to familiar tunes, including childhood favorites. As in the previous book, some American Sign Language is also included.

There is an ongoing challenge with STEM education: making physics, math, and science, in general, interesting, understandable, and retentive for college science and non-science majors, K-12 students, and the public. If not imparting detailed knowledge, at least one would like to introduce important concepts that will be remembered, appreciated, and hopefully would be pursued in more detail by audience members. One solution: as noted by Socrates, “Wisdom begins in wonder.” Indeed, magic as a form of wonderment dates back to Socrates and even earlier. One of the first magic books, The Discoverie of Witchcraft by Reginald Scot, was published in 1584, predating publication of many science texts. In this paper the author, based on recent research, advocates using special forms of magic to both amaze and teach, and in particular to illustrate the wonders of modern physics, i.e., Nature’s magic, but with connections also to classical physics.

The article presents five fifteenth- to sixteenth-century Pali inscriptions from Sukhodaya, Thailand. Three of them are engraved in the Khom alphabet on large square stone slabs, with considerable attention to format; they seem to be unique in Thai epigraphy. Two of these carry extracts from the Abhidhamma; the third gives a syllabary followed by the recollection formulas of the Three Gems. The other two epigraphs are written not on stone slabs but are inscribed on small gold leaves; they contain the heart formulas of the books of the Tipi?aka and the qualities of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sa?gha. The exact find-spots and functions of the slabs and gold leaves are not known. I suggest that they are the products of widespread and enduring Buddhist cultures of inscription, installation, and consecration, as well as of customs of condensation and abbreviation that have have been intrinsic to Thai liturgical and manuscript practices up to the present.

This article aims at defining a privately-owned manuscript from the end of the eighteenth century; a notebook of charms, recipes and ritual prescriptions, presumed to be connected with known manuscripts of magic, that were kept secret and hidden away. The study attempts to reconstruct the context of ‘The Sandvik Notebook’, in order to find out who penned it, when, and why. What kind of knowledge was sought: was it collected for antiquarian reasons, for esoteric interest, or for practical use – such as curing livestock and human beings? Was it copied from books or collected from peasant informants, and could it be related to the extant manuscripts ‘The Black Book’ and ‘The Red Book’, objects of the same line of enquiry? The three manuscripts are from Sandvik Manor, of the joint parish Burseryd-Sandvik, Sweden.

The Magic: The Gathering trading card is an underexplored bookish medium for literary theory and print culture that promotes the interrogation of existing conventions of authorship, paratext, and ephemerality. By focusing on the Magic card through a literary lens rather than one of game studies, the cards reveal as much about themselves as they reveal about literary theory. As a user centric medium, Magic cards connect to the larger history of commonplace books and support Barthes’ claim of author death. Conversely, the diverse discursive contexts in which Magic cards are used demonstrate the usefulness of Foucault’s “author function”. Additionally, the compact size of the Magic card creates tension that strains paratextual understandings of unity. By looking at the Magic card as a bookish form, current theoretical understandings are further developed, and real word applications, creating anti-racist spaces and promoting nonlinear and communal storytelling, become demystified.

The two earliest Arabic treatises explaining the construction of magic squares date from the 10th century ad. One is found in the Commentary on the Arithmetical [Introduction] (Kitāb tafsīr al-Arithmāṭīqī) by ʿAlī ibn Aḥmad al-Anṭākī (d. 376 H/ad 987). Only book 3 of the original three books is extant, and that in a single manuscript. This book is divided into three chapters: the first is a collection of arithmetical definitions, statements of propositions, and identities assembled from Greek and Arabic sources; the second is on magic squares; and the third deals with “hidden numbers”, in which a person thinks of a number and another discovers it after operations are performed on it. Curiously, none of these chapters have anything to do with Nicomachus’ Arithmetical Introduction, on which the book is supposed to be a commentary. Reviewed by: Jeffrey A. Children today tend to be more interested in playing with mobile phones than reading storybooks. The Interesting fairy tales from legends and traditional children's stories tend to be in the form of storybooks. And parents in the past often read fairy tales to their children. However, in modern times, each of them is busy with their mobile phone. Therefore, there is a need for a solution so children can be interested in reading fairy tale books without reducing the pleasure of playing games. The purpose of this research is to develop more interactive storybooks with Augmented Reality technology. The research method used is experimental research which starts from collecting data on needs through questionnaires and interviews with related parties, then analyzes and designs and manufactures prototypes which will be evaluated by usability testing and heuristic evaluation. From previous research, Augmented Reality technology has been widely applied in learning material. in schools and universities and also applied to the introduction of museums. From the storybooks themselves, there are already some who have implemented Augmented Reality or Gamification in applications. However, there is still no interaction between the user and the storybook. Therefore, this study develops an AR BOOK application where users can read storybooks while playing with Augmented Reality technology. The evaluation results show that the AR Book application can attract users to read stories from the application and users are entertained by this AR Book application. So it can be concluded that the addition of Augmented Reality and Gamification technology can attract the attention of users to read storybooks in a different way. For further development, traditional stories can be developed so that they can be better known by the younger generation.

INTRODUCTIONVery soon after I began working on the identity of magic-workers in classical antiquity, I realized that it was necessary to come to terms with a thesis about depictions of erotic magic-working in Greek and Roman literature. It asserted that male writers engaged in a systematic misrepresentation of the realities of magic-working in portraying erotic magic as an exclusively female preserve; the reality was that men were the main participants in this form of magic-working. The thesis is based on the supposition that the truth about erotic magic and the people who performed it is to be found in the formularies or spell-books preserved in papyrus and indefixiones. These two sources of information are said to show us that erotic magic was performed by men and not by the women who are the persons depicted engaging in love-magic in literature. The scholar who first presented the thesis was the late John Winkler. A version of it is to be found in Fritz Graf's general account of Greek and Roman magic. There is agreement over what are taken to be the facts, but views diverge over their interpretation. Winkler appeals to the Freudian notion of denial and transference to offer an explanation not only of the discrepancy between life and literature, but of what he took to be the belief held by the young men who cast erotic spells that the girls who were the objects of their spells were as sexually eager as they were: men, when overwhelmed by sexual desire for unattainable women, through a process of denial transfer that feeling to women, whether old or young, whom they fondly imagine suffer the same intense sexual longings as themselves.

Abstract Magical realism, which combines reality and fantasy, has become a trend in the world of literature, sparking a new way of thinking while producing a literary work. Studies on magical realism in literature are crucial as they could reflect the cultural and societal norms of the society featured. This article utilised the theory of magical realism by Faris (2004) to discuss the aspect of magical realism presented in the novel “Cebisan Mantera Terakhir” (2013) by Hasanuddin Md. Isa and published by the Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM). The genre of the novel is classified as mystery or mysticism in the setting of a supernatural world where shamans practise “santau” (a type of black magic) in the Malay community. This qualitative study aims to identify and analyse the way the author depicts magical realism through content analysis of the text. Findings showed that the magic element in the form of “santau” was evident in the Malay community featured in the novel. The application of Faris‟s principles showed the clear connection between reality and the magical elements of “santau” which can be categorised into particular aspects of the text, such as objects, events, characters, beliefs and texts. Religion and beliefs are also inseparable from the Malay community, a factor portrayed as a connection between reality and the supernatural worlds. Keywords: magical realism, novel, Cebisan Mantera Terakhir, shaman, santau, black magic Abstrak Kemunculan aliran realisme magis dilihat melalui gabungan antara dua dunia, iaitu dunia nyata dan dunia fantasi yang membawa pemikiran baru dalam karya sastera.

There are two women called Salpe who are said to have written books in antiquity: one is described by Athenaeus (7.322a) as the name or pseudonym of a writer of ‘Paignia’ the other is cited by Pliny the Elder who calls her at one point Salpe obstetrix. Salpe is a rare name in antiquity—I know of no other examples—and few ancient books were ascribed to women. That two of these rare female writers should be called by the same name is something of a coincidence. That the name they shared was the very rare Salpe is a priori distinctly unlikely. It is much more plausible that they were one and the same.

The historical-genetic connection between the narrative structures of fairy tales and initiation rites was defined by V.Ya. Propp in “Historical Roots of the Magic Fairy Tale” (1946) and became a milestone in the development of both humanitarian knowledge in general and the science of cinema in particular. The scholar’s idea that the composition of a magic fairy tale goes back to the initiation rite and the myths accompanying it as a source of vital information, and in the cultural and historical context of the ritual practices of primitive societies and life itself, is no less significant than the discovery of the linear order of the syntagmatic deployment of the functions of the actors constituting the invariant set of motifs of a magic fairy tale, made by him in “Morphology of the Fairy Tale” (1928). The article uses the example of Frank Perry’s film “The Swimmer” (1968) to prove the usefulness of both Propp’s books for the development of film analysis as an analysis of cinematic identity.

Based on the posthuman new materialism, we would like to examine the characteristics of Baek Hee-na or picture books and the entanglement between humans and more-than-human’ world. After selecting four picture books: “Strange Mom,” “A Strange Guest ,” “Magic Candies” and “I'm a Dog,”, diffraction analysis was conducted. Baek Hee-na picture books have the characteristics of polystyled entanglement of text-picture texts, the lively and related material (world) system, and various emotions in daily life. Next, Baek Hee-na's picture books were intertwined with post-human new materialism, first with 'acting background: assemblage relationship among all', second with 'cross-existence breaking boundaries: strange hybrid', and third with 'response to non-human beings: ability: relationship and ethics of care'. The discourse on posthuman new materialism became materialized with the world of picture books. This paper’s proposition may broaden the academy to discuss the theoretical picture books foundations and directions of early childhood education in the posthuman era.

Introduction. The language of the folk magic tale is characterized by a wide use of artistic means, including epithets; this may be explained by the worldview, aesthetic ideas, certain concepts that developed in the course of the people’s history, as well as with folk philosophy and the specific features of the language. So far there has been no special study devoted to imaginative-expressive means of Bashkir magic tales; hence, to fill in the gap, the present article undertakes the study of epithets of the stock of artistic means characteristic of the Bashkir folk magic tale that add to the expressiveness of the language in magic tales. Thus, the study aims at identifying and analyzing epithets that characterize the main character of the magic tale from different sides; A. I. Aliyeva’s method has proved useful for this part of the research, while the examination of their structural types draws on the method elaborated by the Altai researcher M. A. Demchinova. Data and research methods. The sources for the research data were the texts of magic tales published in the Bashkir language in the two books of the scholarly collection Bashkir Folk Art; the analysis of the data was carried out with the help of textual and analytical methods. Results. The texts of the tales were examined first to identify epithets; then, the analysis focused on the epithets that characterize the main character: their appearance, marital status, social status, clothing, housing, etc. It appears that the epithets that characterize the protagonists in Bashkir magic tales have a systemic character. There is a certain sequence in the complex portrayals of personages that help to create the image of an ideal hero who may be poor but, also, kind, generous, and always ready to help those in need. The second part of the article focuses on the structural types of the items, including simple and complex epithets. Each of the type is illustrated with examples.

The contents of a manuscript text of Byelorussian origin dated to the mid-sixteenth century, discovered by A. Turilov, are discussed in this article. The text is a magical instruction for the invocation of rain, snow, draught, hail and storm with the help of a magical stone taken from a beast or bird, permanently moistened with fresh blood. The text is a part of Prince Semen Belskii’s archive, who re-emigrated back to Poland from Muscovy. The magical motifs of sinking a stone into water and moistening it with blood are analyzed and linked with ancient, pre-Christian customs, as well as with later practices recorded in spell books and trials of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Parallels from manuscript, folkloric and ethnographic materials are discussed. The article concludes with a translation of this unusual text into English in an appendix.
