Mary Pope Osborne is a prominent contemporary children’s book author, best- known for her Magic tree house series. She creates an imaginary world in which the books in the magic tree house literally transport her child protagonists, Jack and Annie, to other times and places. Osborne’s books are written simply so that young readers can follow a story that engages them, as they learn about diverse cultures, history and science. In Buffalo before breakfast (1999), the eighteenth book in the Magic tree house series, Jack and Annie travel to a Lakota camp on the Great Plains of North America in the 1800s, before the arrival of white prospectors, settlers and soldiers. By recreating the life of a traditional Lakota camp, Osborne gives readers a version of Native American history that has been silenced and marginalised. This article will examine her representation of Lakota history, culture and spirituality in Osborne’s Buffalo before breakfast, and cite research to support the story she tells.

This book offers a bounty of fresh materials for both storytime novices and veterans, including songs, flannel boards, rhymes, stories, and recommended book lists to engage the audience. Updating their 2009 Storytime Magic, authors MacMillan and Kirker use the same format for this volume, but with new materials. As with the earlier title, chapters have themes, such as “All About Me,” “Fairy Tales and Castles,” and “The Natural World.” The new materials in these chapters are useful when planning storytimes. Some activities and flannel boards are tied to specific books. For example, Toni Yuly’s Early Bird (2009, 19) is the focus of a flannel board, and an ALA web link is provided for flannel board patterns, which makes it easy to use. Song lyrics listed in the book can be sung to familiar tunes, including childhood favorites. As in the previous book, some American Sign Language is also included.

In this article we show that the (7, 3)-cycle books B[(C7, 1), (C3, n), P2] admits edge-magic total labeling. In addition we prove that (a, 3)-cycle books B[(Ca, 1), (C3, n), P2] admits super edge-magic total labeling for a = 7 and extends the values of a to 4x − 1 for any positive integer x. Moreover we prove that the (7, 3)-cycle books B[(C7, 2), (C3, n), P2] admits super edge-magic total labeling.

The topic of book curses has not hitherto been discussed in Incantatio and is often ignored in the wider literature on magic and magic charms, perhaps because it is neither folklore nor literature. Book curses can serve two purposes. The obvious one is to try to prevent the theft of books by terrifying potential thieves; the less obvious one is to attract readers or buyers with promises of secret or forbidden knowledge. In our article, we shall examine one of each kind found together in a single Russian volume.

This thesis examines adaptations of Thomas Malory’s 'Morte Darthur' produced for children between 1862 and 1960. It aims to interrogate the complex link between children and the Arthurian legend that has existed since J. T. Knowles’s first adaptation for a juvenile audience in 1862, and which remains strong today. By comparing authors’ alterations to their medieval source, I explore the ‘child’ as a discursive construct, as a mutable and protean category that is equally revelatory of assumptions about adult identity as about childhood itself. Tracing adaptations of the 'Morte' chronologically, I examine the ways in which they participate in wider cultural dialogues relating to national heritage, citizenship, mental health and masculine development through their representations of childhood. Against the backdrop of empire, changes in educational policy, the increasing application of psychology to childcare and two world wars, the diverse ways in which this versatile text is offered as relevant to children illuminates both shifting conceptions of childhood and the complex relationship between adapters and their imagined child readers. This study contributes to enquiries regarding the refashioning of Arthur and the function and manifestation of medievalism, and to studies of children’s literature, by illuminating the ways in which the elusive ‘child’ has been used to focus shifting perceptions regarding the essence and significance of the Arthurian legend over a century.

In my diploma I continue in the topic which I solved in my theoretical part of diploma. I study that "Fantastical moment" in practise. I am interested in its uprise or creation, in its character in memories of other people and in its evoking. The book is documentation of my collecting work and also of my secret interventions in personal places of my kith and kin which are hardly accesible by spectator. The book (or issue) is set in 4 pieces. In ideal case I would like to edit it in about 100 pieces and distribute it in galerie´s shops. In this way it would be possible to lent it in some chosen places in Brno.

Abstract Delaurence began his publishing empire at a time when most books of substantial length were bound in hardback. This kept production costs high and, consequently, while some of his titles went through numerous editions, their price was still out of the reach of many. In 1913, for instance, we find a small advertisement in one American newspaper offering new copies of The Book of Magical Art for sale at $5, knocked down from $12. This may have been a bargain indeed, but it was hardly affordable out of loose change. As we have seen, cheap, mass-produced grimoires had been produced for several hundred years in Europe in the form of chapbooks and the Bibliothe`que bleue.

Abstract THE OTHER DAY I was planning on reading for relaxation and pulled out my old copy of Aristotle’s The Parts of Animals. Every time I start to read this extraordinary man’s work, the following lines from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales seem to come to mind: Those words are a delightful description of the ideal scholar, whose most cherished possessions were bound volumes of philosophy. All of which gets one to thinking about Aristotle’s position in intellectual history. For the past 400 years, starting about 200 years after Chaucer’s death, Aristotle has, in my opinion, gotten a bum deal. A variety of circumstances and a group of unsympathetic readers have combined to blur our understanding of the man and his works. I am absolutely amazed at how often at cocktail parties, banquets, and other social functions one hears some thoughtless, unfeeling, prejudicial remark about his savant, and one is forced to correct the misconceptions. There is a trade-off for setting the record straight. Some people can get quite touchy about having their sloppy philosophical and historical ideas amended.

Education through active citizenship means empowering the learners to take part actively in society and to think critically about certain issues in society. Harry Potter books are a good resource for educators in attaining active citizenship skills.

We live in challenging times. And to flourish in these times and work towards a sustainable future, I believe creativity is the best instrument we have. I see creativity as the magic ingredient for complexity competence, that is, the ability to navigate complex contexts. Thus, my goal is to enable people, teams, and organizations to be more creative. When we create truly agile work settings, these three levers are addressed astonishingly well. When they are mishandled, however, they can turn highly creative and well-motivated teams into mobs of zombies who are merely doing their jobs by the book, failing to think and find solutions for themselves.

The purpose of sleep is to help children grow and develop, which is why many parents try to lull their children to sleep. The present paper investigates what types of feelings, desires, blessings and expectations from a childare contained in lullabies sung by different nations, as well as what perspectives on sleep and lulling a child to sleep there are. The corpus consists of 120 lullabies published in Milutin Đuričković‟s book “Zvezdice sna: uspavanke naroda sveta” (2021). The content analysis technique and descriptive method are used in analyzing the corpus. The obtained results show that the blessings and desires in the lullabies are concerned with the child‟s health, happiness and long life. They are related to dreams that come to life, which provides evidence for lullabies having a magic function. The expectations from a child show that the child was raised to fulfill the expectations of his/her family and the community. The analysis of the perspectives on sleep and lulling a child to sleep shows that emphasis is placed on the quality of sleep, the things that help the child go to sleep and the role of family, primarily that of mother, in creating optimum conditions for going to sleep and removing sleep distractions. The analyzed lullabies also contain a model of raising a child – encouraging the desired behavior (sleeping) by rewarding a child or punishing a child for misbehavior by frightening him/her as a means of reactive discipline. The analysis shows that the lullabies belonging to different nations have many elements in common. The fact that the lullabies used to have other functions besides the basic one suggests the need for further research.
