Streszczenie:
George Leslie Mackay (1844-1901), the first Presbyterian missionary to northern Taiwan, is considered to be one of the most important persons who influence the development of education and medicine in Taiwan. Recently, the manuscripts written by Mackay which detailed his work from 1871 to 1901 in Taiwan have been computerized and published as Mackays diaries. Researchers who are interested in historical topics concerning religious, educational and medical development in Taiwan hence concentrate their attention on these materials. However, little research applied computational techniques to analyze the content of the diaries. That motivated us to apply text mining techniques to explore the content of diaries. The content analysis methodology was used in this research to unveil the context of Mackays missionary work in northern Taiwan. Finally, the context was presented by data visualization techniques.

Clusters often grow by adding concentric layers of atoms in such a way that the overall symmetry of the cluster is left unchanged. Icosahedral shell structure was first envisioned by Mackay1 while working on the difficult geometric problem of sphere packing. Shells with icosahedral symmetry have since been identified in clusters composed of inert-gas atoms,2–4 metal atoms,5,6 and even complex molecules. In this report experimental evidence will be presented for shell structures based on geometries other than the Mackay icosahedra. The results which will be discussed include: (a) octahedral shells in Al and In clusters, (b) non-Mackay-like icosahedral shells of metal deposited expitaxially on a C60 molecule and (c) new data on very large cubic shells of alkali halides. In all these cases, the evidence for shells consists of mass spectrometric anomalies that appear periodically when plotted on a (mass)1/3 scale. Each geometry is associated with a unique periodicity.

Kata Kunci: Rinosinusitis kronis, biofilm bakteri, tube method, skor Lund-Mackay ABSTRACT Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is inflammation of the nose and paranasal sinuses with the symptoms duration more than 12 weeks. Many conditions have been linked to its pathogenesis such as bacterial and fungal infection, superantigens and biofilm. Many studies showed the presence of bacterial biofilms in patients with CRS. Bacterial biofilms can facilitate the resistance to antibiotics. Paranasal sinuses (PNS) CT scan is the method of choice for radiological diagnosis of CRS. Lund and Mackay has developed a scoring system based on the CT finding to assess the quantification of inflammatory process in PNS. Some research suggested that patients with bacterial biofilms have higher Lund-Mackay score pre-operatively. Purpose: To determine the role of bacterial biofilms to the severity of CRS according to Lund-Mackay score. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study with 48 CRS patient’s sample. Nasal discharges were taken by swab in middle meatal using sterile cotton buds, followed by identification of bacteria and detection of bacterial biofilms using tube method. Lund-Mackay score was counted from coronal section of PNS CT Scan. Data was analyzed by Fisher’s exact test. Results: Proportion of patients CRS with high Lund-Mackay score was more common in patient with biofilm (46.2%) compared to patients without biofilm (44.4%). Statistically, there was no significant difference of Lund-Mackay score between patient with biofilm and without biofilm (p=1.00). Conclusion: There was no relationship between the bacterial biofilm with the severity of CRS according to Lund-Mackay score. SUMMARY Comparisons of the MacKay-Marg and Tono-Pen applanation tonometers in open and closed in vitro systems were made for the eyes of cats. Both instruments significantly underestimated intraocular pressure (iop) vs direct manometry (P < 0.001), but in readily predictable manner, with high coefficients of determination (r2 = 0.99). For tonometer 1 (MacKay-Marg), calculated actual iOP = 1.36 × (MacKay-Marg measurement) − 1.67 mm of Hg; and for tonometer 2 (Tono-Pen), calculated actual iop = 1.37 × (Tono-Pen measurement) + 0.8 mm of Hg, using measurements from 11 enucleated eyes. In vivo comparisons were initially made in 81 clinically normal eyes (n = 41 cats) by applying the Tono-Pen first followed by the MacKay-Marg. Compared with the MacKay-Marg, the Tono-Pen significantly (P < 0.001) underestimated iOP in these cats. When the order of tonometer applanation was subsequently reversed in 73 clinically normal eyes (n = 37 cats) the Tono-Pen again significantly (P < 0.001) underestimated iOP, compared with the MacKay-Marg. Alterations in tonometer order did not result in significant differences in measured iOP for the MacKay-Marg when compared with itself, but Tono-Pen measurements were significantly (P < 0.05) less when its use followed, rather than preceded, that of the MacKay-Marg. Mean (± sd) iop in clinically normal cats when each tonometer was used first was 22.6 ± 4.0 mm of Hg (range, 14 to 32 mm of Hg) for the MacKay-Marg and 19.7 ± 5.6 mm of Hg (9 to 31 mm of Hg) for the Tono-Pen. The mean (± sd) absolute value of the differences between MacKay-Marg measurements and those obtained by use of the Tono-Pen was 3.2 ± 3.1 (range, 0 to 13 mm of Hg difference).

An incursion of sugarcane smut in Queensland was identified in 2006 in Bundaberg, Ingham, and Mackay. In 2008, two cultivars, ‘Q205’ and ‘Q170’, were highly susceptible in Bundaberg but remained disease free on a heavily infested farm in Mackay. A glasshouse experiment was established to determine whether the differences in disease expression were due to the sources of the two cultivars sourced from Bundaberg and Mackay in 2009. These were inoculated with the Mackay population of Sporisorium scitamineum spores. These cultivars had the same levels of disease, indicating that the variation in the clonal source of the cultivars was not responsible for the observed differences. A second glasshouse experiment in 2013 confirmed that highly susceptible Q205 and Q170 were resistant to the Mackay population of S. scitamineum but remained susceptible to the Bundaberg population. In 2010, S. scitamineum populations of smut fungi from Mackay and Bundaberg were compared in a field trial and the Mackay population had significantly less disease than the Bundaberg population on four cultivars (Q170, Q205, ‘Q174’, and ‘Q138’) but had significantly more disease in ‘Q188’. These results confirmed the field observations and suggested that there was a differential response among the cultivars for the smut fungi collected from Mackay compared with Bundaberg and are genetically different. This finding suggests that a mixture of spores should be used to inoculate sugarcane clones for resistance screening.

Objectives The Lund-Mackay score is widely used in assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis. We aimed to describe its relationship to other measures of pre- and post-treatment health status. Study Design Multicenter prospective study of 1840 patients undergoing surgery for chronic rhinosinusitis in the UK. Results There was no absolute threshold for surgery, but patients with higher Lund-Mackay scores underwent more extensive surgery. There was no correlation between Lund-Mackay and SNOT-22 scores. The Lund-Mackay increased with increasing grade of polyposis. The Lund-Mackay score was associated with symptom reduction (coefficient = 0.24, P = 0.02) complication rates (odds ratio, 1.08, 95%CI 1.06 to 1.1), and revision rates (odds ratio, 1.03, 95% CI 1.001 to 1.06). Conclusions The Lund-Mackay score measures a different aspect of disease to “subjective” symptom scores. However, it correlates well with other markers of disease severity, the nature of surgery offered, and its outcome. Significance This demonstrates the strengths and limitations of a commonly used staging system.

The aims of this paper are to analyze the missionary endeavors of the first Canadian Presbyterian missionary in Taiwan, George Leslie Mackay (1844–1901), as described in From Far Formosa: The Islands, Its People and Missions, and to explore how Christian theology was established among and adapted to the Taiwanese people: the approaches that Mackay used and the missionary strategies that he implemented, as well as the difficulties that he faced. Given that Mackay’s missionary strategy was clearly highly successful—within 30 years, he had built 60 churches and made approximately 2000 converts—the question of how he achieved these results is certainly worth considering. Furthermore, from the outset, Mackay was perceived and received very positively in Taiwan and is considered something of a folk hero in the country even today. In the present-day narrative of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, Mackay is seen as someone whose efforts to establish an independent church with native local leadership helped to introduce democracy to Taiwan. However, in some of the scholarship, missionaries such as Mackay are portrayed as profit seekers. This paper seeks to give a voice to Mackay himself and thereby to provide a more symmetrical approach to mission history.

Abstract: Theories suggest that nasal polyps occur as a result of chronic inflammation of the nasal and sinus mucosa. Eosinophils are the main inflammatory cells found in nasal polyp tissue. The severity of nasal polyps can be seen from the CT Scan of the Paranasal Sinus (PNS) using the Lund-Mackay score. The purpose of this study was to determine the description of the eosinophil count of nasal polyp tissue and the Lund-Mackay score of CT Scan PNS of nasal polyps patients in Arifin Achmad Hospital, Riau Province. Examination of the eosinophil count was carried out microscopically using histopathological preparations of nasal polyp tissue with semiquantitative assessment, and Lund-Mackay score was assessed from the CT Scan of the PNS. From the 14 samples collected, there were 8 men (57.1%) more than 6 women (42.9%) with an average age of 30.43 ± 17.36 years old. Eosinophil counts were obtained in 5 (35,7%) samples 1/2+, 5 (35.7%) samples 1+, and negative in 4 samples (28,6%). While the Lund-Mackay score obtained an average value of 10.21 ± 6.87 with a low category in 11 (78.6%) and high in 3 (21.4%) samples. Patients with high Lund-Mackay scores tend to have higher eosinophil counts which reflect a more severe degree of disease severity in nasal polyps. Keywords: Eosinophil; Lund-Mackay Score; Nasal polyp; Paranasal sinus

My earliest memories are of 39 Juliet Street, Mackay. The house was built in the 1920s, my parents bought it in 1949 and it was sold after my father’s death in 1998. I have positioned the house within the environment and architecture of North Queensland, and particularly the town of Mackay. Changes are illustrated and dated through the inclusion of some family photographs, which double as a pictorial history of a Queensland family between the 1950s and 1970s. We all think of ourselves as part of families, but when one house contains a family over decades, it too is part of the upbringing. The essay begins with a discussion of North Queensland houses – ‘Queenslanders’, as they were known – and the weather conditions that influenced their architecture. This is followed by a description of the house and its immediate neighbourhood, the uses made of the upstairs and the downstairs areas, and 1960s renovations. My parents are described, along with our means of transport, the Protestant–Catholic divide of the 1950s and 1960s, and my upbringing and that of my brother and sister. The article also discusses holidays, schooling and discovering the world beyond Mackay.

‘For him the streets of the great city of learning which we wished to build lay all clearly laid out before his mind’. These words describe the first Rathbone Professor, the imposing John Macdonald Mackay – who arrived in Liverpool, after a spell in St Andrews, at the precocious age of twenty-eight. Mackay was always portrayed in the image of the modern-day prophet. This was not only a matter of his posture, seen in a famous Liverpool picture in which he is represented pointing the so-called New Testament group of his fellow university progressives to the Promised Land (Figure 1), but also of his rambling style of speech (his lectures lasted nearly two hours) and in the characteristic pause, as the archaeologist John Garstang observed, after you addressed a question to him: ‘an interval during which his eyes roamed among things unseen’. Lytton Strachey, briefly a pupil, put it more brutally: ‘Professor Mackay is very weird and somewhat casual’. But with all this, as my opening quotation suggests, Mackay was one of the chief architects of the faculty and university; discoursing passionately, for example, on the need for Liverpool to maintain its distance from the ‘repellent American type’ (of which he evidently knew very little). By comparison with the great Mackay, and still more with my immediate predecessors, I feel I must begin by lowering expectations.

Streszczenie:
Objective: To determine the association between the laterality of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) and the laterality of sinonasal disease, based on temporal bone ct-scan results and Lund-Mackay Scoring system, among patients admitted for ear surgery in a tertiary government hospital in Metro Manila. Method: Design: Retrospective review of records Setting: Tertiary Government Hospital Patients: Ninety-eight patients diagnosed with chronic suppurative otitis media admitted for otologic surgery in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery from January 2011 to June 2014 were considered for inclusion. Hospital charts and temporal bone ct-scan results were retrieved and analyzed for ear and sinonasal radiographic abnormalities and laterality. Excluded were those without CT-scan plates, who underwent temporal bone surgery for reasons other than chronic suppurative otitis media, and those with incomplete records. The Lund-Mackay Scoring System was used to grade sinonasal findings which were compared to CSOM complications. Data was analyzed using t-test, ANOVA for homogenous numerical data, Kruskal-Wallis for heterogenous numerical data, and chi-square test for nominal type of data. Results: Of the 64 patients included in the study, 12 or 18.75% had radiographic sinonasal abnormalities. There was no significant association between the laterality of ear disease and the laterality of sinonasal pathology as there was no significant difference in the proportion of subjects with sinonasal disease according to laterality of CSOM (p=.32). When site of nose pathology was compared to Lund-Mackay graded scores, it was found that bilateral nose pathology generally had a higher Lund-Mackay score of 8.60 ± 5.60. However, there was no significant difference in the Lund-Mackay score according to the nose pathology site (p=.20). An association was seen between total LMS and patients with ear pathologies, but no significant difference was noted (p=.44). Although patients with ear complications had higher LM scores, this was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Laterality of ear disease was not associated with the laterality of sinonasal disease, although CSOM complications were associated with high Lund-Mackay scores. Future, better-designed studies may shed more light on these associations. Keywords: chronic suppurative otitis media, sinonasal disease, Lund-Mackay, Temporal Bone CT-Scan

The Borah Peak, Idaho, earthquake of October 28, 1983, caused two deaths in Challis and injured one person in Mackay. The most severe damage occurred in Mackay and Challis, where 11 businesses and 239 homes were damaged. Maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VII was rated for both Challis and Mackay based on damage due to vibrational effects. Intensity IX was assigned to the area along the 34-kilometer-length of surface faulting. This event is comparable to the 1959 Hebgen Lake, Montana, earthquake, which was assigned an intensity X based on geologic effects and VII - VIII on vibrational effects (Steinbrugge and Cloud, 1962). The Borah Peak event was felt over 855,000 km2 of the United States and Canada.

Streszczenie:
Abstract OBJECTIVE. We investigated the relationship between Lund-Mackay scale, olfactory bulb depth and width, and Keros classification in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). MATERIAL AND METHODS. In this retrospective study, paranasal sinus computed tomography (PNSCT) images of 47 patients with CRSwNP and 47 healthy subjects (control) were evaluated. In the CRSwNP group, PNSCT scans were assessed based on Lund-Mackay scale. In both groups, olfactory fossae (OF) depth and width, and Keros classification were evaluated. RESULTS. The total Lund-Mackay score was 17.1±5.9. There were no significant differences between OF depth and width values of the nasal polyps group and control group. For both groups, Type II Keros was the most detected type; secondly, Keros type I and rarely Keros type III were detected. There was no significant correlation between Lund-Mackay score (All items and total score) and OF depth and width, and Keros type. There were negative correlations between ipsilateral OF depth and width (p<0.05), whereas there were positive correlations between contralateral OF depth and width (p>0.05). Keros type was positively correlated between ipsilateral and contralateral OF depth and Keros type (p<0.05). In older patients, left OF depth and Keros type decreased (p<0.05). CONCLUSION. As a conclusion, there was no correlation between Lund-Mackay score and olfactory fossa dimensions (depth and width). When considering age, one could notice that Keros type decreased in older patients.
