Conduto, Alexandre Manuel Siqueira.
ABSTRACT - Gastrointestinal parasites in dogs from Macau, China - Dogs are currently considered one of the most popular pets, as they promote the physical and psychological well-being of their owners, but their role in the transmission of zoonotic infectious and parasitic diseases is well reported. Gastrointestinal parasites are often underestimated and their impact on animal welfare and public health should not be ignored. In Macau, more and more households are adopting a dog as a pet, but many are unaware of the dog's role in the transmission of zoonotic parasitic diseases. Data on the epidemiological situation in China is scarce and non-existent in the case of Macau, thus the present study was developed with the intention of filling this gap. Between December 2016 and February 2017, 118 faecal samples were collected, of which 51 belonged to household dogs and 67 to shelter dogs. All samples were submitted to perform coprological exams, which included a faecal smear, passive flotation technique and the modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining technique. The overall prevalence of parasitism was 57% and the parasites identified were Ancylostoma spp. (51%), Uncinaria stenocephala (19%), Toxocara canis (2%), Giardia sp. (5%), Cystoisospora ohioensis (2%), Cystoisospora canis (1%) and Dipylidium caninum (1%). No Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts were detected. Dogs originating from shelters showed a higher prevalence of parasitism (82%) compared to household dogs (24%). The study revealed a high global prevalence of parasitism and the identification of zoonotic species signals the importance of adopting appropriate prophylactic measures and educate owners and caregivers of the shelters in order to reduce environmental contamination and avoid zoonotic transmission. The high prevalence in these shelter dogs in Macau, indicates that there is a need for more effective and better control and prophylactic measures.

Pełny tekst źródłaThis study aims at analyzing some conceptions regarding the East, present in the first half of the 20th century, which interfered directly on Camilo Pessanhas (1867-1926) writing about Chinese life. As a resident of Macao for twenty-six years, he wrote a few prose texts about Chinese life and culture, besides being in touch with some very important sinologists such as Silva Mendes (1867-1931) and José Vicente Jorge. Pessanhas remarks on the East, as well as those of other writers, are relevant for they portrait influences from Orientalism, exoticism and sinology in order to reproduce or challenge certain aspects related to the logic of the colonial discourse established in Portugal and applied in Macao. At first, this paper intends to reflect upon Camilo Pessanhas action as a student of Chinese culture, in which he is confronted by his fellow and co-worker Silva Mendes (who was also a teacher at Macaos Lyceum) as well as his pupil Luís Gonzaga Gomes (1907-1976). The European authorized discourse which derives from the idea of dominance of the so-called inferior peoples seduced the Western intellectuality and had a major impact on many of Pessanhas assessments on Chinese culture. Besides this dimension, we will also analyze a possible connection with exoticism, believed to be true by some researchers who studied the poets life. Having set the scene, we propose an outline of what would be a new Portuguese view on Macao, when comparing its colonial past, clarified in the Portuguese administrative practice by authors such as Oliveira Martins, with new possibilities for understanding Macaos idiosyncrasy, derived from some initiatives of writers like Camilo Pessanha and Silva Mendes.

Abstract: Considering the ethnographical work conducted in the Casa de Macau in São Paulo, we shall retrace here the experience of these people that abandoned their city in China and immigrate to São Paulo between 1953 and 1977. We intend to discuss both the identity dynamics of this group, with the diaspora as reference, and how this group reacts to the changes around them and continually reinvent a universe of traditions. In order to do that our research considered the narratives of their individual story (Macanese in São Paulo)and some reports of Macanese from Rio de Janeiro, Lisboa and Macao, Macao¿s singularities itself, and the contemporary historiography on it. From direct contact with interviews, talks and reports of life stories, we wanted to understand some unknown stories of Macao: those that concern to the successive movements of families leaving it due to the crises that has marked that enclave since the middle of the XIX century

The arrival of Portuguese Navigators in Macau in the middle of the 16th century marked the start of almost five centuries of continuous contact between the Orient and Western Europe. Macau is often characterized as a meeting point of cultures, harmonious co-existence and intercultural exchange (particularly between Oriental and Portuguese culture). There is a wide range of publications about Macau, especially in the area of children ’ s literature. The aim of this dissertation is to carry out an in-depth analysis of a collection of stories for young adults written by Alice Vieira which include reference to the Orient. They contain representations of the Orient within the context of contemporary Portuguese children ’ s literature and reflect some of the most common depictions and significant symbols of the local culture.

This dissertation traces the formation of powerful urban discourses in the context of rapid economic transformation in Macau to understand different levels of symbolic production as they are situated within the larger symbolic structure of power. The research is motivated by my attempt to assess the Neo-Marxist utopian proposition about local culture being a possible counter-hegemonic space where revolutionary politics will develop. Exploratory in nature, my research questions are: Can local culture in the forms of personal and localized practices actually generate oppositional politics? Or do they merely serve as marketing tools for the expansion of economic development? What is the role of local culture in the context of Macau’s urban restructuring? To answer these questions, I view the ongoing cultural production of discourse as indications of local culture. Employing the extended case method, I apply reflexive science to ethnography as an ongoing process that looks continually for patterns of situations and elements to inform me about the relationship between local culture and social change. My research adopts a variety of qualitative methods --- I conducted 7 focus groups, 50 in-depth interviews which included life stories and photo-elicitation, critical discourse analysis, as well as extended ethnographic participation. Three types of discourses were identified during fieldwork to understand the formation of local culture with relation to power and social change: authorized, everyday, and mobilizing discourses. Drawing from the theoretical concepts of Pierre Bourdieu such as symbolic power, field, and misrecognition, I connect and map the production of discourses and argue that they represent the macro-, micro-, and meso-levels of a symbolic system whereby authorized discourse (such as political rhetoric and global neoliberal ideology), everyday discourse (such as local narratives and emotions), and mobilizing discourse (such as protest slogans and grassroots campaigns) interact with one another in multiple fields where the struggle over meanings reinforces and creates social relations linked to power positions. My overall argument asserts that discourses should be conceptualized as a symbolic structure—one that provides the organization and transformation of power relations. Since the struggles over symbolic power via the construction and maintenance of effective discourses involve the production, transmission, and transfusion of cultural meanings that provide appropriate frames and positions for social agents who occupy multiple and sometimes overlapping sub-fields (e.g. fields of social activism, politics, everyday life) structured by the larger field of power relations, social change does not transpire in the field of local culture separate from or innocent of hegemonic power relations. In Macau, local culture simultaneously contains both hegemonic and counter-hegemonic frames and arguments. Social change occurs dialectically when agents negotiate their specific sets of economic, political, and ideological interests within the sub-fields they find themselves in by choosing from the reservoir of possible cultural symbols and thereby reproducing part of culture as structure, while repurposing and tailoring them to create new social practices in pursuit of what they deem desirable and valuable.
