Streszczenie:
Recent years have seen a dynamic development in statistical methods for analysing data contaminated with outliers. One of the more important techniques that can deal with outlying observations is robust regression, which represents four decades of research. Until recently the implementation of robust regression methods, such as M-estimation or MM-estimation, was limited owing to their iterative nature. With advances in computing power and the growing availability of statistical packages, such as R and SAS, Stata, the applicability of robust regression methods has increased considerably. The aim of the study is to evaluate one of these methods, namely M-estimation, using data from a survey of small and medium-sized businesses. The comparison involves nine M-estimators, each based on a different weighting function. The results and conclusions are formulated on the basis of empirical data from the DG-1 business survey.

<p>In this paper, several bootstrap properties of $ m $-generalized order statistics ($ m $-GOSs) with variable rank (central and intermediate) are revealed. We study the inconsistency, weak consistency and strong consistency of bootstrapping central and intermediate $ m $-GOSs when the normalizing constants are assumed to be known or estimated from the re-sampled data using a proper re-sample size. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the weak and strong consistencies of the bootstrapping distributions of central and intermediate $ m $-GOSs based on the normalizing constant estimators are given. Finally, a simulation study is conducted to determine the optimal bootstrap re-sample size corresponding to the best fitting of the bootstrapping distribution.</p>

We develop a method to approach quantum gases of quasiparticles with generalized statistics. This way is based on Fibonacci hierarchies and offers an alternative issue to the Haldane–Wu method. We give the statistical weights densities ρM of gases of quasiparticles with s = 1/M : mod (1), M ≥ 2, using the combinatorial aspects of M-generalized Fibonacci series. This is a remarkable feature which envelopes naturally the Fermi and Bose statistics.

Statistics is a critical tool for robustness analysis, measurement system error analysis, test data analysis, probabilistic risk assessment, and many other fields in the engineering world. Traditionally, however, statistics is not extensively used in undergraduate engineering technology (ET) programs, resulting in a major disconnect from industry expectations. The research question: How to effectively integrate statistics into the curricula of ET programs, is in the foundation of this paper. Based on the best practices identified in the literature, a unique “learning-by-using” approach was deployed for the Electronics Engineering Technology Program at Texas A&M University. Simple statistical concepts such as standard deviation of measurements, signal to noise ratio, and Six Sigma were introduced to students in different courses. Design of experiments (DOE), regression, and the Monte Carlo method were illustrated with practical examples before the students applied the newly understood tools to specific problems faced in their engineering projects. Industry standard software was used to conduct statistical analysis on real results from lab exercises. The result from a pilot project at Texas A&M University indicates a significant increase in using statistics tools in course projects by students. Data from student surveys in selected classes indicate that students gained more confidence in statistics. These preliminary results show that the new approach is very effective in applying statistics to engineering technology programs.

Radiation traversing the observable universe provides powerful ways to probe anisotropy of electromagnetic propagation. A controversial recent study claimed a signal of dipole character. Here we test a new and independent data set of 361 points under the null proposal of statistical independence of linear polarization alignments relative to galaxy axes, versus angular positions. The null hypothesis is tested via maximum likelihood analysis of best fits among numerous independent types of factored distributions. We also examine single-number correlations which are parameter free, invariant under coordinate transformations, and distributed very robustly. The statistics are shown explicitly not to depend on the uneven distribution of sources on the sky. We find that the null proposal is not supported at the level of less than 5% to less than 0.1% by several independent statistics. The signal of correlation violates parity, i.e. symmetry under spatial inversion, and requires a statistic which transforms properly. The data indicate an axis of correlation, on the basis of likelihood determined to be [ R.A. = (0 h , 9 m )±(1 h , 0 m ), Decl. =-1°±15°].

Many students perform poorly in courses on psychological statistics, and it is useful to be able to predict which students will have difficulties. In a study of 93 undergraduates enrolled in Statistical Methods (18 men, 75 women; M age = 22.0 years, SD = 5.1), performance was significantly associated with sex (female students performed better) and proficiency in algebra in a linear regression analysis. Anxiety about statistics was not associated with course performance, indicating that basic mathematical skills are the best correlate for performance in statistics courses and can usefully be used to stream students into classes by ability.

Two-dimensional systems can host exotic particles called anyons whose quantum statistics are neither bosonic nor fermionic. For example, the elementary excitations of the fractional quantum Hall effect at filling factor ν = 1/m (where m is an odd integer) have been predicted to obey Abelian fractional statistics, with a phase ϕ associated with the exchange of two particles equal to π/m. However, despite numerous experimental attempts, clear signatures of fractional statistics have remained elusive. We experimentally demonstrate Abelian fractional statistics at filling factor ν = ⅓ by measuring the current correlations resulting from the collision between anyons at a beamsplitter. By analyzing their dependence on the anyon current impinging on the splitter and comparing with recent theoretical models, we extract ϕ = π/3, in agreement with predictions.

Abstract The International Academy of Manual/Musculoskeletal Medicine (IAMMM) has completely revised the protocol for reproducibility studies of diagnostic procedures in Manual/Musculoskeletal Medicine (M/M Medicine). The protocol was and is aimed at the practitioners in the field of M/M Medicine. This IAMMM protocol can be used in a very practical way and makes it feasible to perform reproducibility studies equally well in private practices and clinics for M/M Medicine with two or more physicians and as by educational boards of the societies of M/M Medicine. This IAMMM protocol provides practical solutions for sample size calculations in reproducibility studies using kappa statistics. Step by step, many different statistical aspects of reproducibility studies are explained, resulting in a very structured protocol format of how to perform a reproducibility study using overall agreement and the kappa value as statistical outcome.

BackgroundIn recent years, the proportion of bipolar disorder among ceramic artists has increased significantly. From the perspective of positive psychology, the study further analyzed the risk factors of bipolar disorder.Subjects and MethodsThe study recruited ceramic artist volunteers as research objects and divided them into a bipolar group and a non-bipolar group. According to artistic creativity, family, endocrine function and other factors of the study subjects data statistics. Statistical software Statistica was used for data analysis, and the T-test or correlation coefficient were used to evaluate the correlation of factors.ResultsBy analyzing the social media texts of science and engineering students, the study found several factors related to employment anxiety. In the bipolar group, the score of creative stress was significantly higher than that in the non-bipolar group (M=4.62 in the manic-depressive group and M=3.31 in the non-manic-depressive group, P<0.001). Competitive stress (M=3.81 in the manic-depressive group and M=2.92 in the non-manic-depressive group, P<0.001) and personal negative experience (M=4.19 in the manic-depressive group and M=3.24 in the non-manic-depressive group, P<0.001) also had significantly higher scores in the manic-depressive group.ConclusionsBased on the analysis of positive psychology, this study analyzed the causes of bipolar disorder induced by ceramic artists. Through statistical analysis using Statistica, the results showed that creativity, competitive pressure and personal negative experience were positively correlated with the manic-depressive index of ceramic artists. This study provides valuable information for psychological support measures for patients with bipolar disorder, thus promoting the artistic development of ceramists.

People forget what they do not use. But attitudes “stick.” Our article emphasizes the importance of students’ attitudes toward statistics. We examine 15 surveys that purport to assess these attitudes and then describe the Survey of Attitudes Toward Statistics, a commonly used attitude survey. We present our conceptual model of Students’ Attitudes Toward Statistics (SATS-M), which is congruent with Eccles and colleagues’ Expectancy-Value Theory (Eccles’ EVT), as well as others. The SATS-M includes three broad constructs that impact Statistics Course Outcomes: Student Characteristics, Previous Achievement-Related Experiences, and Statistics Attitudes. We briefly describe Eccles’ EVT and other theories that support our SATS-M. We relate findings from research using the SATS to our model and end with implications for statistics education. We honor Blalock’s legacy by assessing how using Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) in statistics classes can enhance student learning and increase statistical literacy among social science gradaute students. In addition, we assess whether using MTurk has an impact on student ability to make professional progress. We find that, compared to traditional teaching methods, using MTurk increased student performance, perceptions, and outcomes. In addition, using MTurk resulted in a measurable increase in statistical literacy. We recommend that instructors teaching statistics consider how MTurk or similar technologies can be used in their classrooms.

The exponentially tilted family of densities is used to discuss the relationship between the encompassing principle and the M-test or conditional moment testing principle. It is shown that the two principles are capable of generating the same test statistics and in this sense equivalent. However, there are differences in motivation and emphasis underlying the principles that are important in econometric modeling. In addition, parsimonious encompassing interpretations for test statistics, including those of Cox (1961, in Proceedings of the Fourth Berkeley Symposium on Mathematical Statistics and Probability I, pp. 105-123; 1962, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B 24, 406-424) and Atkinson (1970, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Series B 32, 323-344) are provided.

Streszczenie:
Statistical characteristics of the wind speed in the Samaria region of Israel have been analyzed by processing 11 years of wind data provided by the Israeli Meteorological Service, recorded at a 10 m height above the ground. The cumulative mean wind speed at a measurement height was shown to be 4.53 m/s with a standard deviation of 2.32 m/s. The prevailing wind direction was shown to be characterized by a cumulative mean azimuth of 226° with a standard deviation of 79.76°. The results were extrapolated to a 70 m height in order to estimate wind characteristics at the hub height of a medium-scale wind turbine. Moreover, Weibull distribution parameters were calculated annually, monthly, and seasonally, demonstrating a good match with histogram-based statistical representations. The shape parameter of the Weibull distribution was shown to reside within a narrow range of 1.93 to 2.15, allowing us to assume a Rayleigh distribution, thus simplifying wind turbine energy yield calculations. The novelty of the current paper is related to gathering wind statistics for a certain area (Samaria), and we are not aware of any published statistics regarding wind velocity and direction in this area. These data may be interesting for potential regional wind energy development in which the obtained Weibull distribution could be used in calculations for the expected power generation of particular turbines with a known power dependence on velocity. We have given an example of these calculations for three different types of turbines and obtained their yield in terms of electric power and economic value. We also point out that the fact that realistic wind velocity statistics can be described well by an analytic formula (Weibull distribution) is not trivial, and in fact, the fit may have been poor.

In this paper, we study the concomitants of m?dual generalized order statistics (and consequently m?generalized order statistics) from Huang-Kotz Farlie-Gumble-Morgenstern bivariate distribution (HK-FGM) of the types 1 and 2. Some important information measures are derived and studied for ordinary order statistics and sequential order statistics with a comparison. Specifically, the Shannon entropy, inaccuracy measure, and Fisher information number. Moreover, a comparison between the two types of HK-FGM distribution is carried out.

Mesoclemmys heliostemma (Testudines: Chelidae) was described based on five vouchered specimens and nine live spec-imens from the western Amazon basin. Some authors questioned its status as a valid species, suggesting that it representsa junior synonym of M. raniceps. Here, we report on eight additional specimens from eastern Peru and northern Brazil, and provide descriptive statistics of morphological characters for hatchlings, juveniles, and adults of M. heliostemma, M.raniceps, and M. gibba. We also test for group differences through univariate and multivariate statistical analyses, anddiscuss some advantages of this methodology. Our data suggest that all three taxa are morphologically divergent, and that M. heliostemma is a valid species.

There is a lack of studies focusing on spatial variance of chemical attributes in Amazonas, Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate geo-statistics and sample density of chemical attributes in soils under sugarcane and agroforestry, Humait&aacute;, Amazon state, Brazil. The research was carried out in the municipality of Humait&aacute;, Amazon state, the areas were in meshes of 70 m x 70 m regularly spaced by 10 m, with 64 points per area, and then soil samples were collected in layers of 0.0-0.2 m and 0.4-0.6 m. We performed chemical analyses of the proprieties of soil. Then, it was applied descriptive statistics, geo-statistics and sample density techniques based on semivariogram coefficient of variation and range. As a result, we observed spatial dependence for most of the chemical proprieties in the two areas. Based on Cline, sugarcane presented a sample density of 237 (0.0-0.2 m) and 225 (0.4-0.6 m); and agroforestry had 356 (0.0-0.2 m) and 465 (0.4-0.6 m) points per hectare. Yet in the range sample density, sugarcane showed 30 (0.0-0.2 m) and 5 (0.4-0.6 m), whereas agroforestry areas had 23 (0.0-0.2 m) and 9 (0.4-0.6 m) points per ha.

Streszczenie:
In medical, health, and sports sciences, researchers desire a device with high reliability and validity. This article focuses on reliability and validity studies with n subjects and m &ge;2 repeated measurements per subject. High statistical power can be achieved by increasing n or m, and increasing m is often easier than increasing n in practice unless m is too high to result in systematic bias. The sequential probability ratio test (SPRT) is a useful statistical method which can conclude a null hypothesis H0 or an alternative hypothesis H1 with 50% of the required sample size of a non-sequential test on average. The traditional SPRT requires the likelihood function for each observed random variable, and it can be a practical burden for evaluating the likelihood ratio after each observation of a subject. Instead, m observed random variables per subject can be transformed into a test statistic which has a known sampling distribution under H0 and under H1. This allows us to formulate a SPRT based on a sequence of test statistics. In this article, three types of study are considered: reliabilityof a device, reliability of a device relative to a criterion device, and validity of a device relative to a&nbsp; criterion device. Using SPRT for testing the reliability of a device, for small m, results in an average sample size of about 50% of the fixed sample size for a non-sequential test. For comparing a device to criterion, the average sample size approaches to 60% approximately as m increases. The SPRT tolerates violation of normality assumption for validity study, but it does not for reliability study.
