Streszczenie:
This study deals with Ivan Lucic-Lucius (Giovanni Lucio, Iohannes Lucius) (1604–1679), the father of the Croatian historiography and his manuscript heritage which contains more than 2000 mostly medieval documents. In 2015, a research group came into existence at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest led by Tamás Körmendi to research the manuscripts, particularly the unpublished documents of the Árpádian and Angevin era and the author of this study is a member of the group. In this paper, I present Ivan Lucic-Lucius’s life, scholarship, research methodology and analyze his place in the Croatian historiography. The main subject of the paper is the manuscript heritage which is a collection of sources gathered together by Ivan Lucic-Lucius and his colleagues, friends, and family members from all around Dalmatia from the 1630s. Ivan Lucic-Lucius and his helpers researched in many secular, ecclesiastical and family archives, copied documents, and after a critical analysis, Lucic-Lucius arranged them by regions and put them in writing in chronological order. Many of the collected sources were published in his works, but hundreds of them are still kept in Ivan Lucic-Lucius’s heritage while the original documents, from which they were copied, are lost by now. The manuscripts are kept in the Archbishopric Archive of Split and a twentieth-century handwritten copy also exists in the Archive of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb. The heritage of twelve books contains hundreds of unpublished medieval documents for example Hungarian royal and ducal privileges, documents of the urban administration and the burghers of many Dalmatian towns, charters that can be connected to the Hungarian administration in Dalmatia, and ecclesiastical documents.

Streszczenie:
InMetamorphosesApuleius used a highly exquisite technique of literary casting. This technique implies exploitation of different literary models or molds, both Greek and Roman, which help to hold the novel together on various levels. The story of Io the cow in its dramatic, tragic version (Prometheus BoundandSuppliant Women)has been chosen as one of the basic molds. Io’s story was exploited by Apuleius for shapingboththe ‘inset’ plot about the adventures of Psyche and the main, principal plot—the one about the adventures of Lucius. More than that: the close association between Io and Isis in the Roman tradition provides an important link between the first ten books and the final one. We may consider Io’s story not only as the plot-forming matrix that links together ten books of the novel with its 11th, concluding book, but also as the solid foundation of the unity of the entire novel.

Streszczenie:
During the systematic archaeological excavations in the fortress of Timacum Minus in Ravna near Knja'evac in 1991, a votive altar of Jupiter Paternus, dedicated by Lucius Petronius Timachus, a veteran of the legion VII Claudia, was discovered. The name (cognomen) Timachus was noted for the first time on this monument. It was developed from the ethnonime Timachi, or the hydronime Timachus, known from the historical resources of the Roman period. Timacum Maius and Timacum Minus, the fortifications and settlements in Upper Moesia, were named after the river Timachus (modern Timok), as was, probably, the whole region of the Basin of Timok. The votive altar of Jupiter Paternus was in secondary use as a construction material in the reconstruction of the horreum in the last phase of life in Timacim Minus, in the first half of 5th century A.D. The analysis of the archaeological context of the votive and funeral monuments from Ravna, used as spolia, have distinguished the three periods of their use from the last third of the 3rd century to the middle of the 5th century A.D.

The effect of F. culmorum inoculation on the yield and quality of grain of AF Cesar and AF Lucius barley varieties was monitored. Field experiments were conducted between 2015-2017 at two locations. In grain harvested from plots grown under natural infection conditions, the deoxynivalenol content was very low. Inoculation caused a decline in germination, a certain reduction in yield and a change in some qualitative parameters (reduction in protein and fiber content, increase in starch content), but the effect of inoculation was weak and significantly influenced by the environment and the variety. The β-glucan content was not affected by inoculation. The varieties differed significantly from each other in β-glucan content (AF Cesar > AF Lucius). The deoxynivalenol content of both varieties was comparable after the inoculation while it differed under conditions of the natural infection (AF Cesar < AF Lucius).

‘As in the decade after C. Gracchus' murder, so in the decade after Saturninus’ murder popular fervor abated …’In the unexceptional judgement quoted above Saturninus is clearly identified with the ‘popular cause’ and from that equation all sorts of assumptions flow. The presumption that Marius turned to Saturninus (as to Glaucia) because he needed his strengths, amongst which, it is assumed, was his influence with the populace, is rarely challenged. That is understandable. The presumption of Saturninus' popularity would seem to be based onancientjudgement.

We compared growth, survival, diet, and angler catch of muskellunge (Esox masquinongy), northern pike (E. lucius), and tiger muskellunge (E. masquinongy × E. lucius) through 5 yr after their introduction into three Ohio reservoirs. Muskellunge grew slower than northern pike and tiger muskellunge through the first year but faster than northern pike in subsequent years. Large stocked esocids (180–205 mm) survived better than small ones (145 mm). Survival patterns established through the first fall were maintained through age 5; northern pike survived best, followed by muskellunge and tiger muskellunge. Angler catch reflected differences in survival as well as catchability among taxa. Northern pike were caught at smaller sizes and younger ages than other taxa. Gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) dominated esocid diets for all taxa and age classes, followed by centrarchids and cyprinids. Prey length consumed increased linearly with esocid length; northern pike selected larger gizzard shad than either muskellunge or tiger muskellunge. These differences in population characteristics among esocids should influence mangement and stocking programs. Whereas northern pike maximize angling opportunities, muskellunge probably will provide trophy fisheries. Although tiger muskellunge can be reared inexpensively, they appear to provide little recreational fishing in return.

Streszczenie:
Energy partitioning was studied in the larvae and early juveniles of two species of freshwater fish with different life styles, Coregonus lavaretus and Esox lucius, by measuring simultaneously the rates of feeding, oxygen consumption and growth in long-term experiments. Comparison between the two species is based on measurements at 15 °C, but a group of C. lavaretus was also monitored at 10 °C. The intensity of routine oxygen consumption was mass-independent in the smallest larvae, but above about 10 mg wet body mass (m) it scaled with an allometry of m−0.103 in C. lavaretus and m−0.154 in E. lucius. Routine, minimum and maximum rates of metabolism were higher in C. lavaretus than in E. lucius, whereas the mass-specific rate induced by feeding showed a quite different and more complex relationship to species. The mass-specific rate of growth scaled with m−0.133 (r=0.54) in C. lavaretus but with m−0.24 (r=0.90) in E. lucius. Comparison of five experimental groups, differing from each other with respect to species, type of prey (Artemia nauplii orRutilus rutilus larvae), experimental temperature and body size, suggested a general pattern of energy partitioning, with 62±3.7% of metabolizable food energy being allocated to growth, and 38±3.7% to metabolic expenditures. The relationship between metabolic rate and growth rate, expressed as the ‘yield ratio’, mg dry body mass μmoll−1O2, the inverse of the net cost of growth, proved to be nearly invariant in all experimental groups, namely 0.043 mg μmol−1. However, two experiments with the smallest pike larvae led to higher growth rates per metabolic expenditure, suggesting that in E. lucius oxygen consumption may reach an aerobic maximum for growth at a routine rate of about 200–220 μmol−1O2g−1 dry body mass h−1. Gross costs of growth include mass-dependent maintenance expenditures. Expressed in mass-independent units, E. lucius was more efficient in converting food energy into growth than was C. lavaretus; its superiority in this respect ranged from 7 to 17 % depending on body mass and diet. The results are discussed with regard to the question of whether in small poikilothermic metazoans the allocation of metabolic energy follows the rules of addition or compensation. Furthermore, growth performance of the fish larvae is compared with that of microorganisms on the basis of the ‘yield ATP’ concept.

In Book 6 of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, Lucius contemplates his possible death at the hands of the robbers. After one robber threatens to throw him off a cliff, he remarks to himself how easily such an act would kill him (Met. 6.26):‘uides istas rupinas proximas et praeacutas in his prominentes silices, quae te penetrantes antequam decideris membratim dissipabunt? nam et illa ipsa praeclara magia tua uultum laboresque tibi tantum asini, uerum corium non asini crassum, sed hirudinis tenue membranulum circumdedit. quin igitur masculum tandem sumis animum tuaeque saluti, dum licet, consulis?’‘Do you see that ravine nearby and the sharp rocks jutting into it which will impale you before you hit the bottom and tear you limb from limb? For that wondrous magic of yours gave you only the appearance and hardships of an ass, but in truth it surrounded you not with the thick hide of an ass but with the thin little membrane of a leech. Why not, therefore, take up your manly spirit at last and seek your safety while you can?’Lucius seems to contradict the description of his metamorphosis at 3.24: pili mei crassantur in setas, et cutis tenella duratur in corium, ‘my hair thickens into bristles and my thin skin hardens into hide’. Met. 6.26 suggests that Lucius’ metamorphosis may not be as complete as it initially seemed: his skin is not the thick hide of an ass but the delicate membrane of a leech. This passage is further complicated by a textual dispute: where all modern editions and most translations read hirudinis, ‘leech’, our earliest and best manuscripts have hirundinis, ‘swallow’. I propose that we should restore ‘swallow’ on the testimony of these manuscripts and because it better reflects Lucius’ initial desire for an avian rather than an asinine transformation. My examination of this passage will also highlight the liminal nature of Lucius’ metamorphosis. Despite his apparent physical transformation, he remains caught between the human and the animal worlds in both mind and body.

This article argues that female characters are active participants in the text of theOnos. Among women who are in control of their experiences we encounter the slave girl Palaestra. She uses a forceful metaphor equating a man with the food being prepared in her kitchen, which prefigures much of the ensuing narrative and has the effect of transforming Lucius into food/text to be consumed by the reader. It becomes clear that she and various other female characters, whose abilities go further than the usual novelistic antagonistic skill of controlling their own experience and manipulating other characters, choose and choreograph Lucius' narrative.
