Both mania and psychotic symptoms are well known to result from vascular brain injury, but their pathophysiology remains largely unknown.A 69-year-old man with diabetes and hypertension was seen for sudden behaviour disturbance: euphoric, talkative and uninhibited, he continuously shouted he trusted in Medicine, called the doctor the “King of Medicine”, and repeatedly said “I love doctors, I love nurses, I love Hospitals”. He was overcompliant during neurologic exploration, clearly amused with it. Left sensitive hemi-inattention and left homonymous hemianópsia could also be found. MRI showed an acute right temporo-parieto-insular cortical infarction. The following day he was euthymic and embarrassed for what happened. When visited that afternoon by his wife, she noticed he was strangely suspicious, continuously surveilling all her moves. He progressively worsened, believing she was having affairs with several men. This delusion persisted for the following months, even on risperidone 1 mg/day, culminating in Christmas Eve, when the patient shocked his family saying that his wife was having an affair with one of their sons. At this time, risperidone was discontinued and replaced by quetiapine 200 mg/day, resulting in rapid fading of all symptoms. Both post-stroke mania and psychotic symptoms have been consistently associated with right hemisphere damage, but, to our knowledge, were not previously reported after the same injury. We believe our patient provides evidence that the same anatomic dysfunction, in this case a temporoparietal infarct, can cause both psychiatric phenomena.

In 1837, two years before the nation began its exuberant love affair with daguerreotype portraits, Nathaniel Hawthorne made a prophetic observation about Americans' problematic obsession with “true” likenesses. In his story, “The Prophetic Pictures,” an unnamed, colonial Boston portrait painter portrayed not merely a man's features, “but his mind and heart.” The painter, as Walter Ludlow tells his fiancée Elinor, “catches the secret sentiments and passions, and throws them upon the canvas, like sunshine – or perhaps, in the portraits of dark-souled men, like a gleam of infernal fire. It is an awful gift.” Other colonists deemed the painter's gift “an offense against the Mosaic law, and even a presumptuous mockery of the Creator,” and still others considered him “a magician, or perhaps the famous Black Man, of old witch times, plotting mischief in a new guise.”

Army is one of the noblest professions. Army men usually strive for the welfare of our nation. They should be adulated for their unique sacrifice. “The Victoria Cross” throws light on the life of a unique army officer. It is a biography penned by Ashali Varma who might have felt completely satisfied with her portrayal of her parent’s glorious virtues. She has depicted PremBhagat and Mohini who could lead a meaningful life by exchanging love perfectly and exhibiting warmth to the people who have sought succour. Prem was able to attract many people with his humanness. So, he exhibited empathy, gregariousness, veracity and tenacity to make his every endeavour successful. He never pussyfooted. He was down-to- earth. He was true to the adages “The rarer action is in virtue than in vengeance” and “To err is human; to forgive divine” His wife was Mohini. She was an ideal wife to justify a maxim: “There is a woman behind every successful man”. She could shoulder the domestic burden confidently. Her love to her husband is obvious: “I love you more than anything else in this world” (p.no.39). One can find a lot of instances in which Mohini has involved herself voluntarily to buttress PremBhagat even in official affair. She demonstrated her hospitality impeccably. Hence, the book “The Victoria Cross” has been written in eulogy of PremBhagat and Mohini who have proved to be an epitome of a couple.

The main objective of the present research was to study psychological distress (depression, anxiety, stress) and its relationship with emotional regulation in patients with substance-related disorders. Emotional regulation and psychological distress are directly linked as psychological distress takes place when an individual has difficulties with regulating their emotions. It was a correlational study that followed a cross-sectional research design. G power analysis with a medium effect size suggested a 153-sample size. A sample of 155 men in the age range of 18 to 55(M=30.39, SD=7.97) was drawn from government hospitals admitted for the treatment of the substance-related disorders through purposive sampling. Demographic information sheet, Drug History Performa, Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-42 (DASS 42), and Emotional Regulation scale were used to collect data. Descriptive analysis, for demographic and social variables, depicted most of the participants belonged to a lower socioeconomic class. The mean duration of drug addiction was 12 years (SD =2.45). Most of the participants were multiple drug abusers. Peer pressure, failure in love affairs, and stress were reasons for drug addiction while reasons for relapse were peer pressure along with withdrawal symptoms and cessation of treatment. Descriptive analysis revealed that expressive-suppression emotional regulation strategies were common in study participants. Pearson product-moment correlational analysis demonstrates a significant positive relationship between psychological distress and expressive-suppression emotional regulation. In the present population, both social (peer pressure and bad company of friends) and psychological (stress, loneliness, curiosity and failure in love affair) factors are proven related to drug addiction problems. It is important to consider them for assessment as well as therapeutic intervention plans for patients with substance-related disorders.

This essay examines the structural and representational strategies employed by Michel Marc Bouchard in Lilies, or the Revival of a Romantic Drama to effect a transformation of the traditional images of homosexuality in the contemporary theatre. At the centre of the play is a love affair between two young men in the rural and oppressive environment of Roberval in 1912; a complex metatheatrical structure, incorporating numerous mises en abyme surrounds this nucleus and facilitates an exploration of problems which relate directly and indirectly to its expression of adolescent passion. Within this structure, Bouchard, like his characters, makes use of theatrical revival as a narrative technique in order to reconstruct present meaning out of the past. Bouchard shows that the theatre can arrive at the truth while remaining an artifice, and through its revival and revision of the past can create an alternative theatrical representation of homosexuality.

The article raises the topic of “new sensuality” (“new sensualism”) as a phenomenon that revived the sentimentalism of the 1960s movie drama in the computer age and was embodied in a number of films of the last decade. In such films as Blade Runner 2049 (dir. Denis Villeneuve, 2017), Ex machina (dir. Alex Garland, 2015), I’m Here (dir. Spike Jonze, 2010) robots, replicant androids, and even laser projections act as men and women; and in the Spike Jonze film Her (2013), the main character, although a real man named Theodore, falls in love with the voice of the operating system Samantha, an affair with which becomes more real and valuable for him than anything he has previously experienced in relationships with real women. The plot of the film provides the basis for further practical and theoretical development of the film image of “akousmêtre”, a voice without a body. Digital technologies embodied in the film provide an opportunity to apply and rethink the concept of corporeality, which is relevant in phenomenological aesthetics, as well as to develop the meaning of synesthetic perception in the modern art space. At a new level of correlation between reality and virtuality, the ideas of dialogism that developed within the framework of philosophical anthropology in the twentieth century can be applied in the analysis of the film. Thus, the material of the presented films allows us to expand the art history discourse and raise a number of issues that are relevant not only for the screen arts of the 21st century, but also for people living in the world of digital technologies, but who have not lost the need for genuine human feelings.

World War II, some scholars have argued, interrupted Americans’ “love affair” with the automobile. According to this school of thought, gasoline rationing temporarily curtailed car driving and suspended car culture before both surged in the postwar era. This essay argues that World War II strengthened, rather than interrupted, Americans’ attachment to the automobile and solidified driving as a fundamental part of American culture. Ration boards distinguished between “essential” and “nonessential” driving and justified gasoline rationing as the only method to preserve civilian driving when supplies of gasoline were low. Thus at the same time as government and private industry were encouraging Americans to limit their driving, they were sending a strong message that Americans needed to drive and that foregoing driving whenever one wanted was a true, if temporary, hardship. Advertisements and government propaganda conflated car ownership with citizenship and portrayed driving as integral to the American way of life. But this mode of citizenship was not available to all: posters, pamphlets, and advertisements portrayed the American driver almost exclusively as white and most often as male. Such depictions implied that the mobility and independence that driving afforded were the sole domain of white American men.

Salvation, present for Matthew (24:40b,41b), is future for Luke, who may have discarded the image of the two men in the field, and substituted the two in the bed. As at the Redemption from Egypt almost all Israelites were made into companies by Yahweh and led (with a strong arm) out of Egypt, whereas their Egyptian comrades were left behind, so the critical moment on the path to the Promised Land, coinciding with the coming of the Son of man, will find people of apparently like circumstances divided into the saved and the damned. There is no more time for probation and amelioration than there was at the first Exodus, for all necessary warnings have been issued to him/her who, willy nilly, consorts with the ‛world’ (Lk. 12:30). The Redemption from Egypt not only created a special obligation of obedience towards God and love towards the ‛neighbour’, but also excluded the idea, encouraged by appearances, that those who share the life of this world will share in the next. Luke’s ‛on that night’ ensures that we refer to the Exodus, which is a suggestive way of describing Jesus’ activity as leader (Ps. 78:52). Nevertheless mere membership of a group will not avail (cf. Mt. 23:9-10,27-29), since redemption is an individual affair. Slaves of sin, lacking faith in the redeemer, will not be ransomed at the final Exodus.

Abstract By examining mahragānāt, a genre of music common among the low-income working class in Cairo, and upper-class pop music, this article studies the expression of love and grief across socio-economic classes in Egypt. It challenges the mainstream argument that men, especially those belonging to lower socio-economic classes, are expected to perform ‘like men’ and suppress their emotions and affection. These mahragānāt exhibit extreme affection and grief as men threat of inflicting self-harm or committing suicide if they lose their female lovers. This genre's popularity on social media resonates with increasing suicide rates among lower socio-economic classes due to failed love affairs. By focusing on expressions of love in Egyptian music, this article suggests a dialectic relation between love, class and the understanding of masculinity.

This article is embedded in discourses surrounding the new mobility of people as well as scientific, technological and socio-cultural changes in a late-colonial setting. It investigates how a number of prominent and less-known male authors from the centre and margins of the twentieth-century Hindi literary canon, including Rishabhcharan Jain, Shriyut ‘Arun’ and Durgadas Bhaskar, depict unconventional family constellations and human relationships that challenge normative conceptions of family, fatherhood, conjugality and blood bonds as well as gender roles and responsibilities. The short stories under investigation suggest that human relationships require constant negotiation and investigation of the meaning of kinship, caste, class and the human. In the process, we encounter adulterous husbands, strong wives and nurturing fathers’ life struggles and tribulations. These short stories centre on husband–wife, man–mistress, wife–mistress and father–son relationships. Their male protagonists are authoritative towards their wives, caring towards their mistresses and nurturing towards children. At times, their self-sacrifice goes as far as to complete self-annihilation for the sake of the offspring, and, at other times, they lead double lives. Mothers are absent in these short stories. Instead, male protagonists claim parenthood and are ready to go as far as to abduct infants in order to perform fatherhood. I argue that parenting constellations and conjugality became negotiable for a number of factors that are addressed in my selection of Hindi short stories: (a) parenthood was not contingent upon biology (as stories on adoption and abduction suggest), (b) contraception was readily available to women and men (as promoted in periodicals of the time) and in the process also changing attitudes towards sexuality and conjugality, (c) abortion emerged as a medical option to undo a pregnancy emerging from an illicit love affair and (d) the new mobility enabled people to get around easily and frequently and even lead double lives. In addressing these factors, fiction published and circulated in periodicals offered novel imaginative and innovative spaces for the negotiation of family models once projected as normative in social reformist and nationalist discourses.

This paper, which deals with Central European literature in the comparative perspective, contains an analysis of the representation of intimacy and love (female desire) in the epistolary novels Hanka (1918) written by the Slovene Croat writer and feminist Zofka Kveder (1878-1926) and Jedno dopisivanje. Fragmenti romana (A Correspondence. Fragments of a Novel, 1932) by the Serbian writer and feminist Julka Chlapec-Đorđević (1882-1969). Both of these South Slavic women writers and feminists were cultural nomads with multiple linguistic identities, part of the Habsburgian myth, and they lived for a time in Prague, then an important city of European modernism and the avant-garde. In the novels, they created a picture of a new woman and her intimate world, focusing on the motifs of love and extramarital affairs. In the novel Hanka, readers follow the thematization of the new independent woman and her intimacy in the chaos of the apocalypse of the First World War, focusing on representations of the idealized love of a woman for a man and a woman’s suppressed desire. Julka Chlapec-Đorđević inherited the legacy of Zofka Kveder in Prague, and her novel Jedno dopisivanje is an homage to Kveder’s artistic achievements. The writer depicts gender intimacy in fictitious letters between Marija Prohasková from Prague and her lover Oton Šrepan, a doctor from Slovenia. In both case studies, the representation of the secret love affair and writer´s understanding of intimacy and romantic love as the key concepts of modernity will be examined.

This approach is a pure approach to literature mixing other disciplines into the discussion. The theory used is the extrinsic theory of literature itself, and is also supported by the flow theory where the character Noah Calhoun seeking his true love. This study also uses structural methods, in which all data is only analyzed in the elements that make up the literary works themselves, such as grooves and characterizations. In this study the authors found: (1) Noah left Allie because Allie's parents did not approve of their love story, and Noah decided to go to war. Allie's parents did not approve of their relationship because noah was born from a poor family. And Allie's parents set her up with another man. (2) Noah's love affair occurs when Noah reunites with Allie and new problems arise when Allie is already fiancee with another man. Problems can be seen when the relationship is contrary to the parent because of the difference in status. But Allie kept making sense to Noah about her parents' decisions. (3) when Noah returns with Allie after Allie realizes that she loves Noah over Lon and after Allie's parents see her daughter's love for Noah they finally agree on the relationship. This novel tells about the love of the first story that turned into true love. And this novel tells about how a character Noah to be able to maintain his first love despite many obstacles.

AbstractLooking beyond the notorious “Brideshead” aesthetes and homoeroticism of 1920s Oxford, this article explores the queer sensibilities of the university's male undergraduates and their associates through the 1930s. Steadily through the decade, Oxford's unique brand of queer aestheticism and same-sex love affairs became embroiled with wider debates about the hegemony of socialism and communism and the supposed degeneracy of standards at Oxford. At the same time, the assimilation of medicalized concepts of perversion and homosexuality increasingly made Oxford's aesthetes and same-sex love affairs objects of critical scrutiny, effeminophobia, and homophobia. For many of the university's queer male undergraduates, the Oxford University Dramatic Society provided a safe haven and a platform for queer expression both in Oxford and beyond. A group of images by the Russian émigré photographer Cyril Arapoff provides further insights into the male homoerotics of 1930s Oxford. Situated within the context of Arapoff's life in the city between 1933 and 1939, his extraordinary photographs of nude and seminude young men offer glimpses into the queer lives and loves at Oxford in a period when such experiences were rarely articulated in written form. The images include the spaces the young men inhabited and their interconnections to London's vibrantly queer dance and theater scene. Such insights help establish more firmly interwar Oxford as an important hub of queer modernism, with national and international import for the course of modern queer history.

Despite the expansion and diversification of contemporary physical activity culture, curricula of many secondary physical education programs remain narrowly comprised of sport content. Given the personal and contextual nature of teaching and the immense amount of control teachers exercise over their programs, we examined how a group of 15 secondary physical educators selected content. Using Interpretive methodology we spent two school years working with the teachers. The main finding of this study revealed that the deeply embodied biographically based emotional connections these teachers had with sports played a powerful role in how they selected content. In particular, we found that the teachers’ discussion of their emotional bonds with sports were very akin to how one might explain a love affair. Sternberg’s (1986) Triangular Theory of Love and other literature are used to explain what this love affair may mean for all stakeholders concerned with curricula in secondary physical education.

Streszczenie:
This article is based on a field study I made in trying to understand the everyday life of drug users. I tried to answer the question why drugs stay in addicts’ lives. Is it because of the power of the drug? Or has life on the drug scene any advantages compared to the available life in ordinary society? The material, which was collected through ethnographic fieldwork in the milieus where the drug users spend their time, is based primarily on observations, conversations, and in-depth interviews. In this article I focus on a group of seven key informants, five men and two women, whom I met during the field-work. In between 1989 and 1995 I met these and other informants more than five hundred times. I introduce a metaphor by which I look at the addict's relation to the drug as a love affair. The relationship begins with a phase of falling in love, which leads to a decision either to live separately or to live together. In the latter case, the relationship is established as a marital relation, characterized by security, habits and routines, moments when passionate love flares up again, periods of doubt, and possibly a decision to break up. This break-up can lead to divorce from the drug, but the relationship can also be resumed after a period of separation. When I began my study after having worked for many years as a social worker, one of my basic assumptions was that there was a solidarity among drug addicts and that it was one of the main attractions of a life on drugs. I have since arrived at the conclusion that there is extensive sociality, but without solidarity. There is outward solidarity, vis-à-vis outsiders, authorities of various kinds. The primary expression of this outward solidarity is the principle of not to “snitch”. There is no inward solidarity, however. People let others down, trick their friends, steal from each other, expose others to risk, ignore pleas for help, and so on. The lack of solidarity is due to the fact that the addicts all do business with each other. The most important ways of making a living are based on deals: selling drugs to other addicts, doing break-ins together and sharing the loot, receiving goods from others and offering to sell them, exchanging goods for drugs, treating someone to a fix and expecting a fix in return, charging people who use their flat as a crash-pad, arranging contacts with pushers, selling on a commission basis for a pusher. Relations between the actors in the drugs world are generally permeated with economic relations. The lack of real solidarity is perhaps the main reason why addicts want to leave drugs behind. Only one of the key informants never talked about kicking the habit. Quite a few of them have tried to break out of their addiction. These attempts to break out - or to break into normal society - have demonstrated some of the difficulties facing an addict who wants to get established in ordinary life. As competent drug addicts, with a large network of contacts and a short planning perspective, they come to a world where this competence has no value, where it is essential to be able to plan one's economy, and where they know very few people who do not take drugs. They move to a new world, but the old world of drugs is always alongside it. Even if they move to a new town, they can recognize people of “their own kind” around them. Although staying in the addicts’ world means misery, betrayal, and even death, it has other features: the sociality, eventfulness, the short perspectives, the everything-will-work-out-fine attitude, the sense of competence, having something to do (in the form of criminal ways of making a living), and the artificial pleasure of the drugs. This can be contrasted with the alternatives offered to them by ordinary life: solitude, unemployment, poverty, idleness, the sense of being superfluous. Despite the difficulties, many of the informants make constant attempts to break into ordinary life. I see this as an expression of their having the same basic goals in life as people in general: that they want to live a normal life and be respected by normal people. The result of their efforts depends to a large extent on how they can fill the emptiness they meet when they quit drugs and a lifestyle completely connected with drugs.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the socio-pragmatic manifestations of love and gender differences in the love text messages of the University of Uyo students. Specifically, the objective of the paper is to confirm whether or not the differences are statistically significant and culturally conditioned. Thus, adopting quantitative analytical methods (chi-square and percentages), the analysis is anchored on the socio-pragmatic theory of Leech (1983) and supplemented by Thurlow and Brown’s (2003) romantic and sexual orientations. Twenty (10 male and 10 female) students of the Faculty of Arts supplied their two most preferred love text messages. The data are categorized according to thematic frames of Love Reiteration (LR), Wooing (Wg), Love Wordplay (LW), and Sexual Behaviour (SB). The results indicate that LR texts were the most preferred (18/45%), while SB texts were the least preferred (5/12.5%). Again, whereas the male students preferred both LR and Wg texts most (6/31.6%) and LW texts least (3/15.7%), the female ones loved LR texts most (12/57.1%) and SB texts least (1/4.8%). Thus, the chi-square quantitative analysis of the results shows that the differences in the text preferences are significant. The paper submits that the University of Uyo students’ love text preferences affirm the second-wave feminist linguistic typology of socio-cultural differences in the language use of men and women in Nigeria. Again, the findings have revealed interesting and varied ideologies about how women and men ought to speak in their speech communities. Based on the conclusion, it is recommended that further socio-pragmatics research be carried out in other tertiary institutions, preferably in the South Eastern and Northern parts of Nigeria or schools outside Nigeria, but beaming research light on the socio-pragmatics of age and status differences as well as differences in the students’ years of study.

By the mid-nineteenth century up to 1910, stories of a love affair between a European colonial and a native woman were missing in European settler writing. The point is that these stories were not allowed any more. The reasons for which they were no longer allowed and the way the European imperialists and the colonized people viewed these interracial romances were among the things which motivated Abdulrazak Gurnah to write Desertion (2005). In this novel, he explores the love relationship between a British colonial, Martin Pearce, and a Zanzibari woman, Rehana Zakariya, and how this affair was determinant in the failure of Amin and Jamila’s romance. One may wonder whether Rehana’s bad reputation is simply due to the fact that she was in love with a European man. One may also wonder whether Jamila’s tarnished name is only caused by the fact that she is Rehana’s granddaughter. From a cultural and postcolonial perspective, the paper will deal with Woman’s Virtue in Gurnah’s Desertion. Based on postcolonialism, racism and culture as theories, the study will analyze, on the one hand, the way the two main female protagonists in Desertion are viewed in their community and, on the other hand, the sad end of the love relationship between Amin and Jamila.

Kaikilai is the lust that appears only in one of the two, male and female. In short, a kaikilai is a one-sided love affair. Kai means smallness. kilai means relationship. A petty relationship or a prideless relationship means a branch. The content explains that the branch is monogamous. During Tolkappiyar period, it was called kaikilai to make love to a woman who had not reached sexual maturity. A branch was also said to be masculine. A woman is not told to fall in love with a man who has not reached puberty. However, the unilateral preference of the male and female who has reached puberty is ignored. This is evidenced by the fact that the Kaikilai song sung by Nakkannaiyar about Amurmallan is compiled in Purananooru (83, 84, and 85). Masculine hymns kalithogai in the hymns (56, 57, 58, and 109). It is worth noting that all the songs in the muthollayiram are kaikilai songs about one-sided love. A branch is also a member of the Kalambaka. Reliability takes branches both internally and externally. It calls the initial stage of love the inner branch. Showing love to an immature woman is called introversion. The puraporul Venba Malai depicts the one-sided love between a pubescent man and woman. Often talking about veils, the Puraporul venpamalai also excludes one-sided love as subliminal.

Abstract: William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1595 or 1596) was based to some extent on the English translation of the Old French Huon of Bordeaux by John Bourchier, 2nd Baron Berners (1467–19 March 1533) from 1513 (not 1533, as Jones and Kibler state, xxi). Already before Shakespeare, a play with the title Hewen of Burdocize had been performed in 1593. A Middle Dutch translation had also made this text available to the non-French audience. Huon continued to be highly popular throughout the following centuries, apart from Shakespeare’s play, if we think, for instance, of Christoph Martin Wieland’s epic poem Oberon of 1780 or Goethe’s Faust I (1808). André Norton produced a free translation in 1951. After all, the text deals with the king of the fairies, with numerous secrets, magic, heroic adventures, a love affair with a Muslim princess who later converts to Christianity (of course), the conflict between Christians and Saracens, and criminal charges against the young protagonist and thus his conflict with Charlemagne.

Abstract This article examines how a major twentieth-century Korean writer, Kim Tongin, adopted the language of Western medical science to produce the effect of literary interiority as an iteration of the individual in his novella “Oh, the Frail-Hearted!” (1919–20). My reading of the story unravels the ways in which this work draws several equations between the practice of medical science and that of literature. The main character’s diary and letter are treated as his medical records; a well-known man of letters acts as his doctor by identifying his symptoms through the “medical” gaze; readers are invited to read his “mind” the way doctors examine those of their patients; his illness gives his interiority an identifiable form; and his extramarital affair is not only a love story but also a trigger of his mental illness. The medical gaze allows him to explore his sexuality beyond the traditional conjugal norm—whether via a heterosexual love affair or homoeroticism. His pursuit of individuality is, however, bounded by the “colonial” gaze, under which he appears as an accomplice of the collective debilitation of the colony through a moralistic prism.

Does a triumphant marriage require love? In this philosophical short story, Donna wed her high school sweetheart, nurtured three splendid offspring, only to find herself gradually adrift in emotional detachment from her husband. With her spouse laboring in a distant city, their encounters dwindle, and when they do occur, separate beds are the norm. Amidst a supportive yet ardor-deficient matrimony, Donna crosses paths with Chris, a local carpenter. An unconventional connection sparks, ultimately propelling her into an affair. The eventual decision to divorce her husband for the sake of newfound love sees her embracing Chris, a man deemed less conventionally attractive and materially successful. This choice ignites fury within her children, who lay blame on Donna for the divorce.

The Quran talks about the residence of man, his homeland, his feeling and inclination towards that homeland and this what is called-belonging (to the homeland). Allah created man with a disposition to love his homeland and incline to it. All men of different ages, races and genders love their homes and the Shariah does not oppose or reject this tendency, feeling and love of the homeland. The researcher depended on the inductive method through collecting texts that study verses related to belongingness to the homeland in light of the Noble Quran. He also used the analytical method to analyze the collected information. The research found the following results. The common sense of humans in term of association of a person with his homeland and inclination to it accords with the Shariah as deduced from the Book of the Almighty Allah and the meaning of its verses which explain legality of association with the homeland. Commitment, adherence to and implementation of values of association with the homeland cornubite greatly to supporting and strengthening the homeland if it is taken and implemented with sincerity and honesty and considered as an act of worship (of Allah). Moreover, several verses of the Quran indicated that the homeland is favour as it includes the residence of man, his livelihood and what Allah put on it from bounties and blessings. Additionally, the Almighty Allah explained in the Quran that the man is inclined to love his homeland, incline towards and defend it. The Almighty Allah also showed the great effect on the souls of people when they leave their homelands and families whether for seeking livelihood, as punishment or for saving their religion for the sake of Allah and His pleasure.

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911), a renown Austrian composer, died of subacute bacterial endocarditis, when antibiotic treatment was not yet available. Earlier in his life, he developed a mitral stenosis with systolic murmur which was a legacy of frequent throat infections and rheumatic fever which he had as a child. This condition was diagnosed accidentally when he was age forty-seven. Throughout his adult life, however, Mahler was asymptomatic and became a very successful conductor and musical director, as well as a prolific composer. His preoccupation with fate and death was notorious, probably having its roots in many deaths of his young siblings. The fatal blow came in a form of betrayal by his beloved wife, Alma, who had a love affair with a younger man. This sudden abandonment constituted a severe emotional stress, which superimposed on other past and present adverse events in his life, weakened his immune system. He developed bacteraemia-cum-endocarditis and finally succumbed to a cruel fate, a theme that repeatedly appears in his music.Key wordsMahler, endocarditis, betrayal, immune system, fate

In her late novel, love, again (1996), Doris Lessing represents a penetrative insight of love, providing the widest perspective of love than in any of her previous work. The abundance and variety of plausible les affaires d’amour, which transgress the boundaries of gender, age, geography, and social status, make love, again Lessing’s most “loveful” novel. The narrative responds to this multiplicity accordingly. The essay explores the theme of romantic love of the central female character, Sarah Durham, who is at the centre of the narrative and whose emotional landscape is meticulously mapped. It also aims to unveil the ways Doris Lessing exploits a longstanding tradition of interpreting love in Western philosophy and culture – from Plato to contemporary theorists, including Alain Badiou. Special attention is paid to the interweaving of love and friendship in the relationship of woman and man as well as friendship’s “healing” power for unrequited love encapsulated in the character of Stephen Ellington-Smith. Also, by tracing the transformative impulse of love, the essay tries to bring light on the constructive (in the case of Sarah) and problematic (Stephen) consequences of love.

AbstractIs it possible for human beings to establish romantic relationships with robots? What kind of otherness, or alterity, will be construed in the process of falling in love with a robot? Can a robotic companion mean more than being a tool for house-work, a caretaker, an aid of self-gratification, or a sex-doll? Phenomenological analysis of love experience suggests that romantic feelings necessarily include experiencing the alterity of the partner as an affective subjectivity that freely, willingly, and passionately commits to its partner. The romantic commitment is expected to stem from the sentient inner selves of the lovers, which is one of the features that robots are lacking. Thus the artificial alterity might disengage our romantic aspirations, and, as argued by many, will make them morally inferior to intraspecies love affairs. The current analysis will restrain from ethical considerations, however, and will focus on whether robots can in principle elicit human feelings of love.

This article argues that one of the most significant and best documented moments in Dewey's private life, his love affair with writer Anzia Yezierska, sheds considerable light not only on Dewey's character but also on the strengths and weaknesses of his philosophical conception of the moral life.

The data source of this research is the verses of the Qur'an which relate to gender, especially those related to differences in roles, rights and obligations between men and women. The results of this study indicate that men and women from the perspective of the Koran are not merely biological identities. Male and female are terms intended to denote the different characteristics, duties and roles of each other's presence on earth. Men are characterized by characteristics of aggressiveness and independence, while women are characterized by tenderness, obedience, and love to decorate. The main duties and roles of men are matters relating to public affairs, especially with regard to leadership and earning a living (economic sector). Women who are pre-marital and intend to have marriages have the same requirements as virgin marriages (not pregnant) and there will also be no rejection of marriages from the religious affairs office. Unless the bride and groom are not yet old enough, if this happens, the bride and groom must request a marriage dispensation letter at the Local Religious Court. Sam Sheppard, a contemporary American playwright, is well-versed in the creation of family dramas, and Fool for Love is a good example. Sam Shepard focuses on the conflicts between family members in Fool for Love and describes a pair of half-brother and sister, Eddie and May, who are caught in an unforgettable incest love without knowing it. The male characters in Fool for Love show a series of discourse power relations with women as the mirror center and emphasize the male identity of "the single opposite of women/motherhood". However, male characters who are cheating and violent, such as "absent" father who is free from extramarital affairs and a violent son who is struggling with "incest" relationship, have neither established the positive image of ideal dominant masculinity nor become the "hero son" of mother, and found the "real father". In the social relationship, they also failed to fulfill the authoritative identity of self in the tyrannical behavior and even failed to gain the recognition of male identity in the performance of "non-female" temperament, which ultimately confirmed the lack of self-male identity. Based on the study of masculinity, this paper attempts to explore the causes of the lack of masculinity of father and son in the novel through a close reading of the text of Fool for Love and reveal the identity crisis and gender dysphoria faced by mainstream men in the American social background at that time.

This article provides a reading of Vladimir Solovyov’s philosophy as expressed in his ‘Lectures on Divine Humanity’ and ‘The Meaning of Love’. It seeks to unpack his eclectic thought in order to answer the question of whether there is a Jewish Kabbalistic influence on the Russian thinker amidst his usual platonic, gnostic, and Schellengian tropes. Interested as a young man in Jewish Mysticism, Solovyov fluctuates in his ‘Lectures on Divine Humanity’ between a platonic reading of Schellengian Gnosticism and some elements of Kabbalistic origin. In ‘The Meaning of Love’, he develops a notion of love that puts him very close to what Moshe Idel calls ‘theosophic-theurgical Kabbalah’. Showing how ‘The Meaning of Love’ completes the narrative of ‘Lectures’, we can affirm that there is a certain Christian Kabbalistic line in Solovyov’s thought that culminates in his theurgical understanding of love. In this sense, Solovyov might be called a philosophical Marrano as he is certainly a heterodox theosopher that fluctuates between Christian Gnosis and Christian Kabbalah, never assuming a solid identity.

The Plautine corpus contains five letter-plays, comedies in which epistles are composed, delivered and/or read onstage and figure as a major element of the plot. These embedded missives, both stolen and forged ex nihilo, are variously employed by the personae to enact deception and engender duplicitous maneuvering of epistolary conventions, as well as sophisticated jokes about literacy and the dynamics of the medium. The Bacchides features the most elaborate manifestation of this motif. A servus called Chrysalus schemes to facilitate the love affair between his erus minor, Mnesilochus, and the young man's beloved Bacchis. Bacchis resides at Athens with her sister, another hetaera likewise called Bacchis, whose name and affair with the Bacchides’ second adulescens, Pistoclerus, precipitate a misapprehension that causes the play to reset. Under the mistaken impression that Pistoclerus is in love with his own Bacchis, Mnesilochus returns the money Chrysalus has successfully filched from his father, Nicobulus, informing on the tricky slave and undoing his progress. Once the mistake is clarified, Mnesilochus prevails upon Chrysalus to invent a new ruse for getting the girl. The schemer uses epistles to do it all over again. His second round of tricks consists of a two-pronged stratagem in which he forges and delivers a pair of letters to Nicobulus allegedly from Mnesilochus. The missives serve to pilfer not one but two sums of gold from the old man, permitting Chrysalus and his younger master to both purchase Bacchis’ freedom from her contract with the miles and have some fun.

The article studies Rachel Givney’s novel “Jane in Love”, which conjectures the biography of Jane Austen who is considered to be the mother of chick lit. The study proves that Givney uses: 1) the principles and techniques of chick lit, a modern literary genre of the post-feminist era, at the same time revising the matrix of chick lit; 2) a fabulous narrative theme, discovered by V. Propp, which also undergoes some revision. Givney rethinks the happy ending conceptually important for chick lit and for the fairy tale with regard to a psychological novel devoted to an artist who has found his voice and his place in world literature. In her narrative about Jane Austen, a time traveler, the writer conceptualizes her significance for modern English culture and the Englishmen structuring her novel with formulas-codes of Jane Austen’s oeuvre. The main storyline of her novels is devoted to the complexities of love, and their plots assume a certain set of components. A love affair with a happy ending in the spirit of the Cinderella fairy tale is the main formula of Jane Austen’s novels, which is in demand in chick lit. R. Givney reduces this formula and fills it with a new content: her Jane Austen sacrifices a man for the sake of the future.

The novel The Night Watch(2006)by Sarah Waters, a contemporary British novelist, tells the story of four women whose fortunes were intertwined before and after World War II. By Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, this paper analyzes the wartime female images in the novel. Women’ s wartime drag subverts the binary opposition of people’s presupposed notion about sex and women’ s occupation of men’ job that breaks the fictitious perception of gender opposition; the lesbian love affairs challenge the compulsory heterosexuality. Through the interpretations of the feminist thoughts conveyed by Waters in The Night Watch and Butler’s theory of gender performativity, it can be discovered that the nature of gender identity is actually fictional and can be constructed, reflecting the appeal for gender equality.

Jurgen, a comedy of justice, by James Branch Cabell is one of the most classical pieces of American fantastic literature and has inspired many writers, especially Terry Pratchett, that follows the idea of parodying medieval-inspired countries with a touch of magic, displayed mostly for laughs. Jurgen tells the story of a pawnbroker/poet that one day makes the Devil a favour and the Devil, grateful, grants him for a period of one year the possibility of returning to his youthful self to enjoy life and have love adventures. In the fantasy-medieval land where he lives, the Arthurian legend is real, and he will encounter the great characters such as Guinevere or Anaitis, the Lady of the Lake and have love affairs with every single one of them. But, at the end of this period, he returns home with some material for his poetry and to the normal life of a miserable married man.

How can so exemplary a heroine of sensibility as Sidney be so brutally punished in an apparently typical conduct fiction like Frances Sheridan’s Memoirs of Miss Sidney Bidulph (1761)? This essay locates one cause for the novel’s unsatisfying effect in the hostility depicted between the sexes, which undermines the novel’s conduct-fiction moral code. Through close reading informed by queer theory and social history, I argue that all the major characters experience relationships poisoned by conflicting loyalties and interests—in familial bonds, homosocial friendships between pairs of both men and women, and heterosexual affairs. The emotional dysfunctionality of these social relations reflects the eighteenth-century cultural confusion over such issues as the social value of sensibility, the nature of sentimental friendship and its relationship to same-sex relations and to heterosexual unions. The account of these toxic rivalries suggests that this novel offers a satirical critique of conduct fiction because the genre endorses an anti-feminist ideology predicated on gender division.

Sufism (tasawwuf) states strongly the equity of human beings: men and women. Existinggender differences do not hinder the spiritual achievement of men and women because spirituality connotes universal meaning free from any particular gender identity. Spirituality concerns eternal life and values, whereas gender identity is a profane affairs and consituting a wordly life. In this light, although men and women assume different gender role in their worldly life, both of them have same potency to achieve the highest spiritual experience and gain ascetic happiness. Sufis doctrine celebrates oneness without any individuality. The history of sufism witnessed the effifacy of women to the top highest state of spirituality. Rabi'ah Al-Adawiyah was the phenomenal example of one who initiated the concept of mahabbatullah in its holistic meaning. Through her concept of hubb (love) Rabi'ah reached the highest spiritual maqam (state) in sufis ranks, higher than other sufis could reach at her time. The achievement of Rabi'ah to the ultimate stage of spirituality through her notion of mahabbah is a clear and firrn proof that spirituality never requires particular gender identity; both women and men have equal potency and opportunity to attain or experience such ultimate encounter with spirituality.

In Chaman Nahal’s The Gandhi Quartet. illegal relationships assume a crucial part in the fictionalization of numerous authentic and political occasions of Indian history from 1915 to 1952.They are utilized predominantly to fill in as an artistic method to lessen the characters to simple humans by depicting them as being not able to oppose the enticements of their lustful cravings, along these lines keeping them from being romanticized and causing them to show up as standard individuals, not as demi-divine beings. Yet, for their unlawful relationships, every one of the noticeable characters, particularly Gandhi’s adherents, specifically Sunil, Kusum, Raja Vishal Chand, Vikram and Rahena would have showed up so great. Another reason that illegal issues serve in the epic novel is the impression of socially inadmissible types of man-lady relationship like elopement, free love, inbreeding and live-in winning both in Indian culture just as in British society during the hour of Indian opportunity development.

Bedaya Duradasih: A Cultural Expression During the time of Sunan Pakubuwana III-IV in the Surakarta Palace. Bedaya Duradasih is a form of bedaya dance created at the Surakarta Palace. Its creator was Sunan Pakubuwana IV who at that time, still had the title of Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Anom. Sunan Pakubuwana IV was a king who had a very significant artistic spirit, so it cannot be denied that artistic and cultural life was very flourishing during his reign. Bedaya Duradasih was one of the cultural expressions at that time. The created expression was inspired by the mood of being infatuated/falling in love with the Madurese princess. Looking at the words Duradasih and Madura can be connected with several opinions regarding the meaning of the word Duradasih. It is said that Duradasih derived from the words Dura and dasih, which mean a woman from Madura. Then it is also mentioned from the words Dara and dasih, which means girl/virgin who brings happiness. Furthermore, it is interpreted from the words Dora and dasih, which means lying for political interests at that time, which ended up with a love affair. From these descriptions, it can be concluded that Bedaya Duradasih reflects one of the cultural expressions. Keywords: bedaya; Surakarta; expression

The process of selecting cabinet ministers often takes place behind closed doors, including weighing the need to balance or manage factions within the president's party and/or coalition partners; addressing demands for diversity in the cabinet, such as appointment of women or other historically underrepresented groups; sending signals about the administration's policy agenda; and enabling the president to have people he or she trusts close at hand. On the other hand, ministerial exits are usually less private affairs. In some cases they come after weeks of public or congressional scrutiny and criticism of ministers for policy failures or follow extended speculation about who will lose their seat when the president reshuffles the cabinet. Some ministers depart to pursue lucrative private-sector opportunities. Other ministers switch posts but stay in government. How ministers exit can have implications for the administration since a president who is frequently forced to shuffle the cabinet or sack ministers looks ineffective, and comparisons to rats and sinking ships are difficult to avoid in the wake of excessive changes. At the same time, an administration with zero turnover may also not be healthy, as it would suggest that presidents are staidly bound to their initial course of action and unable (or unwilling) to adapt to changing circumstances.

The aim of this article is to analyze the issue of adultery in the Polish town of Wisnicz. The basis of the study was “Acta Nigra Maleficorum Wisniciae” (1665–1785). This source provided data from 49 cases. Moreover, it constituted the basis for establishing the number of cases pertaining to adultery, determining the number and origin of the defendants, examining the circumstances of the offense as well as examining the court procedure, sentence and the imposed penalties. The paper attempts to answer all these questions and to present ruminations on the norms which regulate this issue as well as to delineate the attitude of the courts in other Polish towns towards adulterers. Among the aforementioned court cases in Wisnicz, four instances were related to the charge of adultery. The perpetrators of this crime have committed adulterium simplex (it is a category of adultery in which only one person is married). Furthermore, in the course of the discussed love affairs, there were two instances in which only the men were married (the women were single) and the women were married (and the men were single) in theremaining two examples. Only one person was convicted of adultery. The remaining defendants were also charged with murder, infanticide or incitement to commit these crimes. The love affairs mentioned above were brief in character. Also two of the people charged with adultery were servants of their respective lovers. Finally, the circumstances of these acts were passion and deserting the wife by her husband. Another aim of the article was to delineate the punishment system. Just one person was convicted of adultery only. It was treated as a felony then and punished by death inthe form of decapitation. In this instance, the sentence was subsequently commuted to a fine. Additionally, it should be added that both penalties were prescribed by the urban legal principles for this crime. All perpetrators who were found guilty of adultery were sentenced to death. However, the punishment was commuted in each case to flogging. This commutation correlates with a general view on the liberalization of the punishment system in the 18th century.

As Hippocrates said to one of his students: “Let your best means of treating people be your love for them, your interest in their affairs, your knowledge of their condition, and your recognized attentiveness to them.“ A physician who is guided by this teaching must be a very caring person. He or she must care deeply about people. To care, in this sense, means to be troubled about the troubles of others. He or she must also care about being a good doctor, about being competent in all relevant respects. I believe that all thoughtful people want such women and men as their personal doctors. We want our doctors to be caring persons, to be attentive to our needs and responsive to our concerns. When our doctors talk with us, we hope that they will speak to the unique individuals we each correctly believe ourselves to be.
