Streszczenie:

Baby boys can and do succumb as a result of having their foreskin removed. Circumcision-related mortality rates are not known with certainty; this study estimates the scale of this problem. This study finds that approximately 117 neonatal circumcision-related deaths (9.01/100,000) occur annually in the United States, about 1.3% of male neonatal deaths from all causes. Because infant circumcision is elective, all of these deaths are avoidable. This study also identifies reasons why accurate data on these deaths are not available, some of the obstacles to preventing these deaths, and some solutions to overcome them.

The purpose of this study was to uncover the unique and devastating consequences of untreated head injuries in a population that self-monitors their return to play after an injury. The secondary purpose was to identify the general perceptions of head injuries in the action sports culture and the themes that are common challenges for action sport athletes during their TBI rehabilitation in order to examine the coping skills that were used during their attempt to return to their sport. Seven athletes were interviewed. The sports represented were snowboarding, BMX racing, BMX freestyle, and motocross. The interviews assessed the following concepts: injury experience, symptoms, recovery, perception of the sport, return to sport, personality factors, and perception of head injuries. The interviews were transcribed and coded by the researcher in order to identify common themes and perceptions. The results indicated that the high frequency of injuries in action sports contributes partially to the perception of head injuries. It is a part of the culture to ignore injuries and push through pain. While the athletes have found success with this method in the past, it takes personal experience to convince them that head injuries should not be treated in the same manner. Since many of the athletes were unaware of their exact medical diagnosis, the severity of their injuries were established by how much their symptoms affected their day-to-day life. Physical symptoms were the most commonly reported, but psychological symptoms had a greater affect on the participants' day-to-day life. Generally, the participants who returned to play had higher levels of self-efficacy and self-awareness than the athletes who were not able to return. However, it is unclear from the study if the athletes had high self-efficacy because they were able to return, or if they were able to return because of their pre-injury characteristics. There was also a general consensus among the participants that more support and awareness about brain injuries were needed in their sport.

The United States has resettled unaccompanied minors before. In the 1960s and 1970s, minors from Indochina were resettled in the United States. In the 1970s, the U.S accepted 14,000 unaccompanied minors from Cuba through Operation Peter Pan. Many of these Cuban minors, aged five to eighteen, were sent to the United States by parents fearing their children would be indoctrinated in communist schools. In the case of these minors, they arrived in the United States with the consent of their still-living family members. In contrast, about 3,500 Sudanese Lost Boys were resettled in the United States in 2000, and more recently in 2010, 53 “lost children” from Haiti were brought to the United States following a devastating earthquake. This study investigated the integration and assimilation patterns of the Sudanese Lost Boys in the Kansas City area with the purpose of understanding the sociological impact on these Boys from their own perspective. As opposed to previous studies done on these Boys in Kansas and other areas in the United States, the present study used interview-based research and analyzed data using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. The study concluded that the Lost Boys were both “Lost” and “Found” in complex ways. The study found that unaccompanied refugees labeled as minors at the time of resettlement integrated more “successfully” than those resettled as adults. Minor Boys received certain advantages over Boys who were labeled legal adults. Over time, those resettled as minors accumulated more social capital relevant in American society, while those resettled as legal adults fell behind. The findings highlighted problems associated with age-based treatment of refugees, especially in the case of the Boys who were arbitrarily classified as adults. Assigned ages significantly impacted their assimilation process into American society. Unlike those Boys resettled as minors, legal adults did not have access to structure and immersion opportunities afforded by foster families, formal education, and social activities. This study concluded that age-based disadvantage was evident in the case of the Lost Boys.

This essay discusses how female and male characters are represented in the novel Peter & Wendy by J.M Barrie from 1911 and the Disney version Peter Pan from 1953. Jane Sunderland’s models on social gender are used as a substructure to help clarify how the characters are portrayed as individuals, in relation to other characters and through their own actions and speech acts. The essay shows that there is a major difference in how male characters are portrayed compared to the female characters and that every character of the story lives up to what seems to be socially constructed gender roles.

This thesis investigates why the Lost Boys, a group of young South Sudanese refugees who have long expressed a desire to return home, are not returning in numbers. It finds that variables generally cited in the existing literature (family ties, securing, occupational opportunities and patriotism) have similar values for those who have resettled permanently in the US, those who have returned to South Sudan, and those who have expressed interest in returning but not done so. Personal factors such as age, marital status, income and education levels are found to contribute to overall risk averseness, which is highest among the resettled and lowest among the returned.

Reading plays an important role in establishing lifelong learning and providing the reader with an avenue to new experiences and a language with which to express their ideas and feelings (Owen 2003; Hamston & Love 2005). In particular adolescents need a language that allows them to 'play with their identities in a safe and controlled manner to explore who they want to be in this ever changing world' (Koss & Teale 2009, 569). Block (1995) advances that there is a distinct correlation between what we read and how we live in the world, and argues 'if what we read influences our identity in the world, the ways we are able to imagine and live in the world, then there is some responsibility to address these various texts, their readers and possible reading experiences' (Koss & Teale 2009, 569). Within my research I attempt to take on this responsibility by establishing a connection between reluctant adolescent male readers, and their reading experiences and by using their opinions to create a novella that seeks to more fully engage them. Centred within the larger debate about boys and books are two central discussions: why don't boys read and what should boys read? While a number of reasons why adolescent boys don't read are mentioned in this paper and it might not be possible to fully account for why many are reluctant readers, it is possible to argue that specific forms of literature addressing certain themes and topics relevant to the age group might appeal to reluctant readers. The conceptual framework for this research was structured using a mixed-method approach consisting of four phases. In positioning my research for determining literature that reluctant readers may want to read I draw on a variety of material which tends to support the longevity of S.E Hinton's (1967) argument that 'teenagers today, want to read about teenagers today' (cited in Smith & Wilhelm 2002, 6). My practice-based research was conducted within a high school in Brisbane, Australia. Six participants were selected and required to read three recently published Australian Young Adult novels, and opinion was collected via semi-structured interviews on these case studies. Grounded Theory (Charmaz 2003; Charmaz 2006; Glaser & Strauss 2011) informed the design of the questions, and the process of concurrent interviews and analysis of opinion. This analysis led to construction of my theory: adolescent male reluctant readers want to read about female relationships and family conflict within a story that consists of an adventure that, although unlikely to happen, could happen. From this study there are two main contributions, which have theoretical and practical implications for stakeholders with a vested interest in the discussion regarding boys and books. First, this study, through the research methodology, presents key findings that indicate that reluctant readers are interested in realistic texts addressing themes that will help with the construction of, and understanding of, their own lives. Secondly, the grounded theory derived from these findings is applied to my own praxis and my creative artefact (Duende) is included with this exegesis as a text intended to create a connection between engaging texts and adolescent male reluctant readers.

From the release of their first single “Surfin’” in 1961 to the release of the album Pet Sounds in 1966, rock history traces the arc of the American rock group the Beach Boys in broad terms of the early-sixties Southern California surf music trend and the revolutionary effects of the Beatles’ stateside arrival in 1964. Typical claims for progress, autonomy, the significance of the album, and myths of authenticity in the study of the emergence of the rock concept, however, tend to promote an essentialist understanding of what rock music is about and what it is for. This study proposes an alternative narrative in which the regulating dichotomies of rock—art versus commerce, seriousness versus schlock, the authentic versus the inauthentic— are historicized, in the case of the Beach Boys’ transition from surf band to a complex studio recording project, as matters of creative practice and conflicting sensibilities. This work explores the limiting beliefs that modern American man is surrounded by that create suffering and isolation for him. Utilizing heuristic and hermeneutic methodologies, this thesis leans into the primary feelings of anger, guilt, and shame typically expressed by American males. It examines how these feelings came to the forefront of his expressions and how he can allow himself to find ways to safely express the other feelings repressed inside him. Just as the blind man when given a matzo turned it over and over, examining it with his fingers and exclaiming “who wrote this?”, this thesis suggests new interpretations regarding how males express themselves. Through awareness of the value of rituals and metaphors, this natural language of men can serve as a beginning toward his feeling safe in expressing his repressed feelings. El presente trabajo se propone discutir acerca de los límites entre el Análisis del Dasein de Medard Boss y la Analítica del Dasein de Martin Heidegger. Tomando como punto de partida la aparición de la dimensión orgánica en las consideraciones de Boss, se discutirá cómo es que se devela una oposición en los énfasis temáticos correspondientes a una consideración filosófica y a una psicológica del ser humano. Dicha oposición será aclarada indagando en las respectivas motivaciones de ambos programas, para destacarlas como sus eminentes límites. Finalmente, comprendiendo dichas motivaciones como límites, el artículo planteará que la insistencia de lo orgánico vigente aún en Boss señalaría problemáticas que pueden competer aun a la Analítica del Dasein del mismo Heidegger.

The influence of the boss-tip radius ratio of the impeller on the aerodynamic performance of a multistage centrifugal compressor were numerically and experimentally investigated. Three impellers, which boss-tip radius ratios were 0.28, 0.34, and 0.40, were developed for a design suction flow coefficient of 0.125. The inlet radius at the shroud of each impeller was designed to provide the minimum inlet relative velocity, and the exit width was also designed to keep the inlet to exit relative velocity ratio. The numerical and experimental results suggested that the impeller pressure-rise decreased as the boss-tip radius ratio increased. The decrease of the impeller efficiency due to the increase of the boss-tip radius ratio could be minimized by minimizing the inlet relative velocity at the shroud side and by keeping the inlet to exit relative velocity ratio constant in the tested cases. The ribbed diffuser seemed to be useful to improve the performance of compressor stage with the high boss-tip radius ratio impeller, although further investigations will be needed to clarify the change in the flow fields and the loss generation mechanism in the ribbed diffuser with the high boss-tip radius ratio impeller.

A widely spread acknowledgement states that most children are enticed by computer games as well as by every other activity related. In this respect, neither the children with intellectual disability are an exception, while many of them have not the opportunity to use a computer at home, therefore they have to ?benefit? from the occasion offered by the school they attend. We purposely planned the time spent by the pupil in front of a computer to at utmost efficiency, as o helped by an educational software adapted for the pupils with special educational needs. The present research was thus developed on the hypothesis that those pupils using this educational package would prove visible progress in acquiring a higher attention level, both in quantity and quality terms. Following the theoretical considerations, we built an investigative procedure with the target of identifying the impact resulted from using a computer-aided educational software adapted to the children with special educational needs, as mainly concentrated on the direct influence on pupils? focused and distributive attention. The research was applied to two sampling lots of subjects ? a control lot and an experimental lot, each of them containing 90 pupils selected from the special education system in Bucharest. In compliance with their chronological age, the subjects are ranging between 10 and 16 years old, boys and girls, while their years of study vary from the 4th to 8th grade. As results, progress can be noticed in terms of the attentional level, both within the experimental lot and the control lot. However, the experimental lot recorded a meaningful progress form the statistic point of view as related to all variables investigated, if compared to the control lot, where progress is insignificant.

Teams of small (mm-to-cm scale) robots, often known as swarm-bots, can provide unique functionality owing to their small form factor, distributed sensing capabilities, resilience to disruptions and agent-loss, and likely low cost. Such swarm-bots are being increasingly touted to support various indoor surveillance, hazard detection, and search and rescue missions. This paper presents the conceptual design, fabrication, and testing of a new cm-scale wheeled swarm-bot. Simulated investigation of a simple particle-swarm-inspired approach to coordinated path planning for these swarm-bots is also presented. The swarm bot is developed around a modular platform, comprising snap-on (3D printed) structural components, a stepper-motor actuated wheel system, a Raspberry Pi computing node, a wireless radio module, a Lipo battery, and proximity sensors; all components are readily detachable, thereby allowing reconfiguration flexibility. Through three design generations, a stable prototype offering >20cm/s speed and ∼50 min endurance, was developed, assembled and tested. A virtual simulated environment is developed by combining MATLAB-based modules and a V-Rep environment, in order to simulate the coordinated operation of these swarm-bots. A 78% rate of success in completing target (light source) search missions was observed during the numerical experiments, and performance robustness was observed to improve with increasing swarm size.

Setup-related aspects of background-oriented schlieren (BOS) experiments are discussed focusing on a sensitivity parameter S, which represents the relation between light deflection and resulting BOS signal, and the geometric blur. An analytic expression for the geometric blur by means of the circle of confusion (CoC) was derived which shows a proportional relation to the sensitivity factor S. The theoretical findings were validated in a reference experiment using generic distortions in glass plates. It was found that the filtering effect of the blur decreases the maximum background shift and its influence can be expressed with a blur loss factor B, which depends on the size of the CoC in relation to the investigated object. Multiplying the setup sensitivity S with the blur loss B results in the effective sensitivity Seff that determines the maximum achievable BOS signal of a schlieren object. For the investigated reference objects, the maximum effective sensitivity Seff was found to occur at CoC sizes in the object domain from 2.5 to 3.8 times the extent of the investigated objects. A step-by-step method is proposed for designing BOS experiments to obtain a maximum signal strength. The design parameters are further discussed specifically in regard to rotor tip vortex visualization, for which a variety of previously reported experiments are compared. A simple prediction method for the BOS signal of blade tip vortices is proposed and validated with experimental data from a rotor test stand. The application of the method to rotor systems of different size shows the requirement for increasingly higher sensitivity values for visualizing vortices of small-scale rotors.

ABSTRACT Tracking the changes and peculiarities in the manifestation of motor abilities in school age is one of the prerequisites that determine the effectiveness of the learning process. Effective learning, in turn, is a leading goal of modern education. In this sense, tracking and identifying peculiarities and changes in the manifestation of motor abilities is an enduring issue in the theory and practice of physical education. On the basis of the above, we set as the aim of the present study to identify the peculiarities in the manifestation of the motor ability speed in pupils at the lower secondary stage of primary education. In order to achieve this aim, we set ourselves the following tasks: 1. Reading about the problem in scientific sources. 2. Processing the results of the 30-meter-race test of the boys. 3. Revealing the impact peculiarities of the speed performance of schoolboys in the aspect of age. We fulfilled our study tasks by processing the achievements of the boys aged 10 - 14, who participated in the 30-meter-race test. We applied a variance and comparative statistical analysis which allowed us to specify the impact peculiarities of the motor ability in its age aspect. After processing and analyzing the results of the study, we found a lot of changes in the speed performance of 10-14 years old schoolboys. In this regard, it is significant to note the changes recorded within one school year, which had the appropriate level of reliability to allow us to formulate recommendations for the work of teachers of „Physical Education and Sport“.

Un bot conversacional es una aplicación de software que cuenta con capacidades de Inteligencia Artificial – IA y Procesamiento de Lenguaje Natural para entablar conversaciones habladas con seres humanos. El acelerado desarrollo de las tecnologías de IA ha permitido la creación de bots conversacionales con los cuales es posible interactuar de forma amigable, fluida y coherente. Las aplicaciones prácticas de estos sistemas varían en un amplio rango, sirviendo como asistentes de voz, en servicios de audio-respuesta, educación en todos los niveles y en el área de la salud. La aparición de bots en el contexto de la disciplina psicológica data de 1958 cuando Göllnitz habló por primera vez de estas aplicaciones en un contexto neurológico. Pero no fue sino hasta 1977 y luego en 1985 que aparecieron las siguientes publicaciones sobre el tema, siendo estas aún incipientes tanto en producción como en el nivel de desarrollo de potencial que alcanzan estos recursos tecnológicos al servicio de la salud mental y afines. Podría decirse que es en el año 2012 que se observa un avance importante en el área (Scopus, 2022). La incorporación de estos sistemas autónomos inteligentes en Colombia, se ha trabajado en contextos de evaluación, diagnóstico e intervención psicológica en temáticas relacionadas con estrategias para el control de la ira en la conducción (Yoo et al., 2022), conversaciones con respuestas emocionales para atención a clientes (Drouin et al., 2022), entrenamiento en habilidades blandas en contextos escolares (Dell’Aquila et al., 2022), entre otros; todos ellos conducentes al desarrollo de herramientas orientadas a mejorar la calidad de vida de individuos, grupos y poblaciones, con características de usabilidad pertinentes, que promuevan la atención oportuna en salud mental (Santamaría-Puerto & Fernández-Rincón, 2015). Los grupos de investigación OSIRIS & BIOAXIS y de Psicología de la Salud, Deporte y Clínica, de la Universidad El Bosque, han venido trabajando en un proyecto conjunto para desarrollar un bot conversacional cuyo objetivo es apoyar a los profesionales en psicología en los procesos de evaluación del dolor oncológico pediátrico. El resultado de este trabajo ha sido Kenito, un bot conversacional desplegado a través de una aplicación móvil que, a través de múltiples personajes animados, está en capacidad de entablar conversaciones con niños. Kenito surgió de la necesidad de desarrollar una primera línea de atención emocional a niños diagnosticados con enfermedad oncológica pediátrica. Para sostener conversaciones, la aplicación implementa diferentes capacidades de inteligencia artificial, tales como el reconocimiento de voz, traducción de texto a voz, identificación de intenciones y generación automática de respuestas. Las conversaciones responden a un flujo previamente definido y las son almacenadas en la nube para el análisis posterior de los profesionales de la salud. Actualmente, el proyecto en fase de aprobación por un comité de ética médica para proceder a realizar pruebas con niños. A futuro, se espera que la aplicación pueda servir para la atención de problemáticas relacionadas con violencia intrafamiliar y orientación emocional, incorporando reconocimiento de emociones a través de análisis facial.

La cultura amazónica es resultado del mestizaje racial y la integración cultural, donde la experiencia de vida de los habitantes generó, a través del sincretismo de elementos indígenas y europeos, una cultura en la que el ensueño de la imaginación de la sociedad cobró especial importancia. El Festival de Parintins es un espectáculo de proporciones monumentales, al aire libre, en medio de la selva y los ríos del Amazonas, un espectáculo al aire libre, donde los Bois, Garantido y Caprichoso, se enfrentan para el deleite de alrededor de 80 personas. mil turistas. Como en un teatro, asistimos a una epopeya de cabocla donde personajes y elementos imaginarios sirven como fuentes de conexión y origen a través del mito, que no es más que la puesta en escena poética del lenguaje. Ships travel in waves most of the time. The horsepower increase or speed loss in waves can become large in adverse sea. Speed loss needs to be compensated for by increasing the power. Moreover, the associated speed-loss can possibly not be compensated due to the limit of installed power. This will cause delays, and may even lead to safety concerns in maneuvering. Thus, there is a need for minimizing added resistance due to both economical and safety reasons. Ships with better performance in waves even with reduced power are desired. Latest researches on advanced ship optimization are taking added resistance into account. Ship bow optimization has been the main measure to reduce added resistance in waves. Based on analyzing the working principles and potential benefit of the different kinds of novel ship bows, a novel measure is proposed to reduce the ship resistance in waves is proposed. A novel measure to reduce the ship resistance in waves of existing ships by installing a simple structure at the ship bow. The structure is designed to sharpen the ship bow and therefore reduce added resistance due to wave reflection. Thus, it is suitable for the large tankers and bulk carriers, which have blunt bows. The volume above free surface was expected to reduce ship motions and the added resistance due to ship motions consequently. This measure does not change the original ship design. It can be retrofitted on existing ships fairly easily at low cost. In order to verify the benefit due to the retrofitted structure, CFD simulations are performed in both head and oblique waves, which can take 3D effect into account. Four different retrofitted structures are designed and the numerical simulations are performed with the same numerical and mesh settings in each wave condition. The CFD simulation results confirm that the novel measure can reduce ship added resistance efficiently and it also has benefits in oblique waves.

This rapid review updates a previous report (Fraser and Martineau-Searle, 2018) with evidence from 2018 onwards. It finds an evidence base on online gender-based violence (OGBV) covering a wider range of countries than the previous report. Some key findings on the nature and prevalence of OGBV include: The most recent surveys show a prevalence of OGBV ranging from 16% to 58%; Men and boys also experience online abuse in high numbers, but it is less likely to be gender-based; Several studies from different countries identify Facebook as the top location for incidents of OGBV; Higher levels of online harassment and abuse are faced by people with intersecting inequality factors; According to victim-survivors, perpetrators are more likely to be unknown and acting alone, but large numbers are known to the victims. Perpetrators themselves report divergent, multifaceted and often over-lapping motivations for their actions; Analysis of underlying drivers of OGBV highlights an overarching theme of power and control, and heteronormative expectations around gender roles and sexual practice. Many authors recommend that OGBV be understood as part of a continuum of abuse where normalised behaviours, such as sexual harassment in public spaces, shade into behaviours widely recognized as criminal, such as physical assault. The societal impact of OGBV includes: Media freedom is compromised; Democracy being undermined; Economic losses resulting from lost productivity; A ‘climate of unsafety’ prevails. Evidence base: The number of surveys about self-reported experiences with online harassment has increased rapidly. The majority of the research found during the course of this rapid review came from international and domestic non-governmental organisations and think-tanks. Academic research studies were also found, including several literature reviews.

Situated in a complex region of the world, Puntland State in Somalia is dealing with a range of threats and instabilities such as droughts, floods, locusts, the movement of internally displaced people (IDPs), and armed actors. COVID-19 has added yet another strain on its tremendously fragile infrastructure. The impact of the pandemic has been far reaching, affecting livelihoods and hampering unpaid and underpaid care work and responsibilities. The multitude of crises and rates of inflation have left the majority of families food insecure and without income, halted education and health services, and exacerbated existing vulnerabilities and the incidence of violence. This gender analysis was conducted and funded by the German Federal Foreign Office (GFFO), in partnership with Oxfam in Somalia and KAALO, to better help local government bodies, agencies, NGOs, and INGOs grasp the differentiated impact of the crises on women, men, boys, and girls, and host and IDP communities, during this time of intense loss and instability. The analysis provides an overview of the experiences of the affected communities, and gives recommendations on how to address immediate concerns and plan future programming.

Las explotaciones del sistema ganadero doble propósito están constituidas por animales mestizos en diferentes proporciones Bos taurus-Bos indicus; su principal característica es el ordeño con presencia del ternero. Otro aspecto para tener en cuenta es que, en la mayoría de las explotaciones no se cuenta con información y, si existe, no es analizada ni interpretada. El documento tiene como objetivo presentar información de la funcionalidad técnica y estructural del sistema doble propósito en Arauca. Los datos fueron recolectados durante el desarrollo de un proyecto de investigación; se realizó una descripción de las características generales del sistema, su estructuración, aspectos de manejo y alimentación, así como los indicadores productivos y reproductivos, expresados en producción de carne y leche de los grupos raciales. Este es el primer manuscrito que reporta información de tipo productiva de los grupos raciales existentes. Se concluye que el manejo del sistema ganadero doble propósito, aún tradicional, y su mejoramiento genético para aumentar la producción consiste en la introducción de “razas de moda”, por lo que se olvida el efecto de los factores medio ambientales. La falta de registros se asocia al desconocimiento de la productividad y de la estructura, así como la funcionalidad del sistema doble propósito.

Incontinence is the medical term used to describe the involuntary loss of urine or faeces. Women, men, girls, boys and people of all genders, at any age, can experience incontinence. A person with incontinence can experience leakage occasionally, regularly or constantly; and leakage can happen at any time, day or night. A person may also experience leakage of urinary or faecal matter due to not being able to get to the toilet in time or not wanting to use the toilet facilities available. This is known as social, or functional, incontinence. In many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) understanding of incontinence is still in its early stages: the term ‘incontinence’ may not be known, knowledge of the condition is rare, and the provision of support is lacking. Those who experience incontinence may face stigma due to having the condition, and this may affect their willingness or confidence to talk about it. There is a need to better understand incontinence in LMICs, and how best to support people living with the condition to improve their quality of life. This requires having conversations with individuals that experience the condition, and with individuals who care for those who do: they will have the lived experiences of what it means to live with incontinence practically, emotionally and socially for them and their families. Living with incontinence can have a range of impacts on the people living with it and their carers. These include increased stress and distress; additional needs for water and soap; and restricted ability to join in community activities, school or work. Living with incontinence can also lead to a range of protection issues. The potential challenges that people face may be quite diverse and may vary between people and households. The checklist below, and corresponding page references to ‘Incontinence: We Need to Talk About Leaks’ can be used to increase your understanding of incontinence and the options available to support people living with the condition; and provide guidance on how to have conversations to understand how best to support people living with incontinence in your area.

This brief summarizes a case study conducted to assess the gendered impacts of COVID-19 school closures on adolescent girls and boys in three districts in the province of Punjab in Pakistan. Data as well as discussions and interviews with adolescents, teachers, and parents shed light on difficulties in accessing and adjusting to remote learning, learning loss, deterioration of behaviors and health, and other effects. Based on these findings and further reflections by stakeholders on the successes and gaps of mitigation measures, the case study proposes recommendations for improved teacher training, digital access, alternative learning options, and a gendered focus in interventions.
