Streszczenie:
AbstractIn western North America, the milliped order Callipodida is represented by the Colactidini, Tynommatini stat. n., and Diactidini tribus n., in the subfamily Tynommatinae, family Schizopetalidae; a coordinate tribe, the Texophonini, occurs on the Gulf Coast of south Texas. The Tynommatini consists of two genera and four species: Tynomma mutans (Chamberlin), T. magnum Buckett & Gardner, and T. gardneri sp. n., occurring around Monterey and San Pablo/San Francisco Bays, California, and Idrionaria dineh gen. n. & sp. n., in Washington County, Utah. The Colactidini ranges from Durango, Mexico, to central Utah and California east of the Sierra Nevada, with disjunct areas in southern California and Baja California, the latter extending northward to metropolitan San Diego. It is represented by two genera and 6 species: Colactis Loomis: C. tiburona (Chamberlin), utorum (Chamberlin), and protenta and quadrata, both by Loomis; and Heptium Loomis: H. carinellum and scamillatum, both by Loomis. The Diactidini, occupying coastal southern California and the adjacent fringe of Baja California, is comprised of three genera and 10 species: Diactis Loomis: D. soleata, triangula, and frondifera, all by Loomis, and amniscela, cupola, jacinto, procera, and strumella, all spp. n.; Florea sinuata gen. n. & sp. n.; and Caliactis bistolata gen. n. & sp. n. The following new synonymies are proposed: C. yuma Chamberlin, sideralis Loomis, and loomisi Hoffman under C. tiburona; C. briggsi Shear and saxetana and baboquivari, both by Loomis, under C. utorum; H. canum Chamberlin under H. carinellum; and Etiron paroicum and pearcei, both by Chamberlin, under D. triangula and T. mutans, respectively. The eastern Nearctic callipodid fauna is summarized and significant new localities are reported; Tetracion antraeum Hoffman, stat. n., is elevated from a subspecies of T. jonesi Hoffman.

Streszczenie:
Mitocybe auriportae Cook and Loomis, 1928, is a thread-like, densely pubescent andrognathid milliped that lacks exoskeletal ornamentations and is equivalent in size to the veins in decaying leaves. Its anterior gonopods are dominated by a broad, subtriangular sternum; the falcate ultimate podomere arises subterminally and is directed ventrolaterad. The species is known from a single collection 91 years ago in Marin County, California; I report a new locality in Santa Cruz County and redescribe and illustrate somatic and gonopodal features. Mitocybe Cook and Loomis, 1928, is monotypic; a new species from Guerrero, Mexico, reported 30 years ago, is still undescribed and, from geographical proximity, probably referrable to Andrognathus Cope, 1869. Somatic features of these genera are contrasted. The taxonomy of Platydesmida is uncertain because it is based on somatic, rather than gonopodal, features and because Brachycybe Wood, 1864, bridges the anatomical gap between the two component families. The family-group name, Mitocybeini Hoffman, 1980, is available to accommodate Mitocybe. In situ SEM examinations of colobognath gonopods do not show details of the anterior gonopod sternum, and studies on dissected gonopods are recommended.

New specimens of Gabelia pedunculus Rigby and Murphy, 1983, and of the new species Gabelia giganta and Gabelia fascicula are described from the Siluro-Devonian(?) Roberts Mountains Formation from Loomis Creek Canyon in the Snake Mountains, northeastern Elko County, Nevada. Stalk fragments of G. pedunculus are similar to the holotype from the northern Roberts Mountains, Eureka County, Nevada. Gabelia giganta n. sp. is a large species with skeletal elements in the stalk twice the size of elements in G. pedunculus. Gabelia fascicula n. sp. is based on thick-walled, cup-like upper parts where a gastral layer of coarse, diagonally oriented spicules contrasts to a dermal layer of regular vertical and horizontal bundles of hexactine-based spicules of at least two orders around parietal gaps. The specimens are all part of a probably transported seafloor assemblage.

Arvechamboides ocala, n. gen., n. sp., is proposed for a male aniulinine milliped in Marion County, Florida; no females are available. The genus is the fourth in the Parajulidae recorded from Florida, all representatives of the Aniulini, and the second known only from the state, the other being Gyniulus Loomis, 1963. The posterior gonopods of Arvechamboides possess both true and accessory prefemoral processes, the former being a feature of Pseudojulus Bollman, 1887, and the latter, a trait of Arvechambus Causey, 1963. The 8th sternum expands laterally into broad lobes as in Arvechambus, and the generic name reflects the shared anatomical features with this genus. "Sphaerotrichomes" are observed on the tibiae & tarsi of the 1st legs and are reported in retrospect for previously studied aniulinine genera.

Abstract: The rise of capitalism and democracy in the Early Republic transformed how Americans engaged county officers who served as important middlemen who shaped how communities understood value and property ownership through their processes of seizing and redistributing property. Court officers represented the legal system and governments’ right to rule, and they drew on that authority to maintain their own legitimacy. This article explores the ways that members of the Suffolk County, Massachusetts Sheriff’s Office—Deputy Sheriff Luke Baldwin and Sheriff Charles P. Sumner—did their work and how contemporaries attempted to limit their authority through the legal system, democracy, and mobocracy. As courts and creditors increasingly deferred to a private individual’s judgement than that of a public officer, sheriffs such as Sumner and Baldwin emerged in debates over who ultimately held the responsibility for maintaining law and order.

At risk of committing entomological heresy, we question the identity of a dung-burying beetle species that originates from Africa and has been introduced first into Hawaii and subsequently to Australasia, North America, and South America (Fincher 1986; Edwards 2007; Noriega et al. 2010) for pasture improvement and biological control of dung-breeding flies (Waterhouse 1974; Bornemissza 1979). Under the name Onthophagus gazella (Fabricius 1787), it was the first species selected for introduction into Australia by the CSIRO Dung Beetle Project (Bornemissza 1976; Edwards 2007). Firstly, in 1968, a "tropical strain" was introduced from Hawaii where it had become established after introduction from Zimbabwe in 1957 (Markin & Yoshioka 1998). Later, after establishment of the CSIRO Dung Beetle Research Unit in Pretoria in 1970, a "cold" or "even rainfall strain" was introduced into Australia directly from South Africa (Bornemissza 1976) (even rainfall region = south coast of Eastern Cape). The species was subsequently introduced into the southern continental United States of America (Victoria County, Texas) from Hawaii (Montes de Oca & Halffter 1998) then elsewhere into southeastern and southwestern states from Hawaii and breeding colonies from Australia (Anderson & Loomis 1978). It has since expanded its range through Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean to coastal Colombia (Kohlmann 1994; Noriega 2002; Noriega et al. 2006, 2011). Expansion of its range within central southern South America (Noriega et al. 2010) has been assisted by introductions into Brazil from the United States of America since the 1980s (Bianchin et al. 1998), and others into Venezuela and Chile (Vidaurre et al. 2008). More recently, it has been introduced into quarantine and field trials in New Zealand (Forgie et al. 2013) using individuals originating from the south coast of the Eastern Cape and Northwest Province of South Africa (S. Forgie, personal communication).

In northwestern North America, the milliped family Nearctodesmidae is comprised of four genera, Nearctodesmus Silvestri, Kepolydesmus Chamberlin, Ergodesmus Chamberlin, and Bistolodesmus, new genus, and six species, N. insulans (Chamberlin), N. cerasinus (Wood), N. salix Chamberlin, K. anderisus Chamberlin, E. compactus Chamberlin, and B. bonikus (Chamberlin). These species occur along the Pacific coast from San Francisco Bay to Prince Rupert, British Columbia, including all offshore island groups, with an eastward extension into Lewis and Clark County, Montana, east of the Continental Divide. An allopatric population of N. insulanus occurs in the Shuswap Highlands of British Columbia, and an allopatric species, E. remingtoni (Hoffman), inhabits caves in western and southern Illinois. The principal taxonomic characters are the number of secondary projections from the gonopodal telopodite, the configuration of the longer of these, and the length and configuration of the distal zone of the acropodite. Polydesmus bonikus is a nearctodesmid and is assigned to the new genus, Bistolodesmus. The following new synonymies are proposed: Jaliscodesmus Hoffman under Sakophallus Chamberlin; J. alticola Hoffman under S. simplex Chamberlin; N. brunnior, N. campicolens, and N. malkini, all by Chamberlin, under N. cerasinus; N. amissus, N. pseustes, N. renigens, N. carli, and N. boydi, all by Chamberlin, and N. olympus and N. cochlearius, both by Causey, under N. insulanus; K. mimus, K. hesperus, and K. pungo, all by Chamberlin, under K. anderisus; and Ectopodesmus cristatus and E. c. dentatus, both by Loomis and Schmitt, under Ergodesmus compactus. Modern diagnoses and illustrations are presented for the family and all northwestern taxa, along with keys to the genera and species of Nearctodesmus. Accounts and gonopod drawings are also presented of Sakophallus and S. simplex Chamberlin in Michoacan and Jalisco, Mexico.

Nesoressa crawfordi, n. gen., n. sp., is proposed for a slender parajulid milliped inhabiting high elevation boreal forests on five inselberg mountains in Cibola and Socorro counties, New Mexico; it is anatomically incompatible with established tribes, so Nesoressini, n. tribe, is erected to accommodate it. A sixth population existed 27 years ago in "caves near ice caves," Cibola County, but its presence today awaits confirmation. In addition to nemasomatid-like body dimensions, N. crawfordi is characterized by an elevated pleurotergal "shield" on the caudal margin of the gonopodal aperture, simple anterior gonopods possessing a sternum, telopodites, & large coxal lobes, and posterior gonopod (pg) telopodites comprising three closely appressed projections— long, parallel, nearly identically configured prefemoral processes & solenomeres and shorter, spiniform branches "C." The disjunct populations of N. crawfordi appear to be relicts from a continuous Pleistocene population in central New Mexico that fragmented into localized vicariants as the climate warmed and dried in the post-Pleistocene era. As the pgs are joined by a sclerotized sternum, Nesoressa/Nesoressini appears to be the sister-group to a clade consisting of tribes lacking this structure. A clade "Aniulina" is postulated comprising Nesoressini + (Parajulini + (Aniulini + Gosiulini)) that originated in the Rio Grande border region of the US and Mexico, its present center of diversity. Apacheiulus Loomis, 1968, a potential synonym of Gosiulus Chamberlin, 1940, is assigned to the Gosiulini, and the tribes Bollmaniulini & Karteroiulini, both established by Causey, 1974, are tentatively regarded as synonymous.

Streszczenie:
Welcome to the 2019 Journal of Jungian Scholarly Studies. This volume marks an important milestone in the history of journal, the first year in which it is being hosted by the University of Alberta to enable wider accessibility and influence in the community of scholars interested in Jungian ideas. Great thanks go to Dr. Alexandra Fidyk and Professor Luke Hockley, as well as the fine staff of the University of Alberta’s Library Publishing Team, for making this partnership possible. Essays in the 2019 volume reflect the theory of emergence, the theme of the 16th annual conference, in June 2018, of the Jungian Society for Scholarly Studies held in Portland, Oregon. Emergence is a feature of complex and adaptive living systems, from the microscopic to the macroscopic, studied by scholars in the natural and human sciences. Jung’s 1916 theory of the transcendent function anticipated emergent phenomena: the tension of the opposites, he said, creates “third thing . . . a living birth that leads to a new level of being, a new situation” (CW 8, par. 189). Thus it is no surprise that contemporary Jungians have turned their attention to the exploration of emergence articulated by our sister disciplines in much the same way Jung himself was fascinated by the scientific discoveries of his time. In keeping with the theme of the 2019 volume, and thanks to the artful suggestion of Matthew Fike, the six scholarly essays are arranged in three pairs suggesting an emergent order. The first pair begins with Susan Courtney’s exploration of the medieval symbol of the salt-point and its component elements—circle, square, and point. The salt-point is an image of the Self that emerges, over time, to produce coherence of body, soul, and spirit. Courtney explores five kinds of time that shape human experience, from our standing in earth-bound time to our interconnectivity with eternal, archetypal forces. The themes of time, timelessness, and the journey toward the Self are the subtext of the second essay, in which Lisa Pounders uses the lens of alchemy to analyze the vivid, unprecedented bone paintings of Georgia O’Keeffe that were produced when the artist discovered her soul’s home in northern New Mexico. Pounders demonstrates how creating visionary works rooted in a specific landscape reflects as well as fosters the emergence of symbolic material that transcends time and space. The second pair of essays turns from personal and artistic themes of emergence to the presence of emergent phenomena in political life. Inez Martinez examines the cultural and religious roots of toxic patriarchy in the U.S. through literary analysis of Charles Brockden Brown’s 1798 novel Wieland or the Transformation, An American Tale. She argues that President Donald Trump’s followers, socialized to worship a Judeo-Christian almighty father that divinizes narcissistic traits, easily embrace his claims to unlimited power, obedience, and adoration. Elizabeth Nelson’s essay on toxic masculinity describes what may be called the devouring father in the western tradition. She argues that the puer-senex dyad reveals this wound through the omission of pater (Latin, father). The essay explores the impact of generative fathering on communal life expressed in a male developmental triad puer-pater-senex that is parallel to the female developmental pattern maiden-mother-crone. The final pair of essays returns from the chaotic nigredo of communal strife to the promise of fresh, restorative emergent processes. How can human participation with the continuously creative psyche fuel the transformative practices we need to bring about a more healthful future? Bianca Reynolds offers one possibility: the utility of a Jungian theoretical framework for the creation of play texts. As a case study, she explores the contemporary family homecoming drama in Tracy Letts’s August: Osage County and Reynold’s own original play, Eventide. The second essay in this pair, by Douglas Thomas, explores Dream Tending, a method of working with dreams that treats the images as living entities from the timeless archetypal world of the mundus imaginalis. Thomas points out that the vital dimension of a dream-centered life is play, which offers significant psychological value after the exodus from childhood. Play opens the potential space of new meaning—for individuals, communities, and cultures. The six scholarly essays individually explore the theory of emergence and, in their sequencing, enact emergence. We continue the practice of including poetry and art, paired with the essays and poems, since they too offer images of emergence. A separate section includes all of the art selected for this year’s volume, accompanied by the artist’s statements about the work. On behalf of the members of the editorial team who have worked so tirelessly to create this volume, I welcome you to Volume 14 of the Journal of Jungian Scholarly Studies. This chapter examines Turner's affinity for biblical scripture. It first surveys Turner's account of himself and of what inspired him, with particular attention to his account's pattern of scriptural citation, in order to substantiate the claim that Turner indeed blended invocation of Revelation with a fondness for Luke. The chapter argues that, in fact, Turner based much of his understanding of himself and of the significance of his actions on Luke's account of the life and ministry of Christ. It also examines other possible influences on Turner's narrative of what inspired him. The chapter concludes by indicating how this examination of Turner's biblical exegesis might influence our perception of his narrative of the events leading up to August 1831.

This chapter describes how Luke and Freeman were arrested on charges of “contribution to the delinquency of minors.” For the “crime” of helping teens test the Civil Rights Act, which was, after all, the law of the land, Luke and Freeman were charged with several different offenses. The police just could not make up their minds, it seemed, until they finally settled on the crime of contributing to the delinquency of minors. Luke and Freeman were placed together in a tiny holding cell at the police station. To buoy their spirits, they sang freedom songs. At five o'clock in the morning, Freeman and Luke were awakened abruptly and transferred to the Meridian City Jail. Later that morning, they were transferred yet again, this time to the county jail for the preliminary arraignment. At the preliminary arraignment, Judge Harwell gave them a continuance, and they were placed in a new cell at the county jail.

This chapter focuses on the arrest of the men who murdered Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney. Based on two confessions of Klan members, on December 4, 1964, federal prosecutors from the US Justice Department arrested the nineteen men identified by the FBI as the murderers, plus two men accused of withholding knowledge of the felony—twenty-one men in all. The men who were residents of Meridian were now being held at the county jail. Luke and Freeman feared that they would be locked in jail with the murderers. However, the US Justice Department could not actually charge the accused with the crime of murder. Murder is rarely a federal crime and only if it occurs on federal property. Otherwise, the crime of murder is covered by state laws. Instead of murder, nineteen men were charged with “conspiring to violate the civil rights of Schwerner, Chaney, and Goodman,” and the remaining two, with “refusing to provide information about the murders.” The accused murderers were eventually freed under bond. With their bail paid, Luke and Freeman were also released from jail.

This chapter details the experiences of Luke and other civil rights workers as they were rotating in and out of jail in Meridian. Sandy Watts was charged with burglary. Her bond was set at twenty-five hundred dollars. Meanwhile, Joe Morse was charged with receiving stolen property, and his bond was fifteen hundred dollars. Unable to pay bond, Sandy immediately went on a hunger strike. Sandy Watts and Joe Morse were now being held in the county jail since they were awaiting trial. Gail Falk was serving out her sentence for a traffic violation in a holding cell at the police station. Because white women were rarely jailed in Meridian, there was no cell assigned to them at the city jail. Instead, they were kept at the nearby police station. From behind bars, Gail explained to her students why she was in jail, and in this way, Freedom School continued.

This chapter illustrates how, through the month of July 1964, while Luke and his fellow activists were busy teaching at the Freedom School, registering voters, attending evening meetings, and singing, they were also staying attuned to any news they could find about Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman, and James Chaney. The local paper, the Meridian Star, carried news articles about searches in the area being conducted by the FBI, despite the fact that state and local officials still claimed the disappearance was all a hoax. The day after their disappearance, when their still smoldering car was discovered in a swamp, supporters around the country mounted protests and held sit-ins at federal buildings. However, even as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover increased the number of agents in Mississippi tenfold, he reassured white Mississippians that the FBI would not give “protection” to civil rights workers. It was early on the day of August 4 that FBI agents had ordered and supervised the excavation of a fairly recent earthen dam in Neshoba County. Buried deep in the ground, the bodies of the missing men were uncovered.

Neapolis, modern Kavala, still shows clearly why it was an obvious place for a port in ancient Greece. Nestled snugly about a half-moon bay, the city looks down upon a natural harbor that became the principal location in northern Macedonia for travel to and from Asia Minor. Kavala is the site of ancient Neapolis, the principal port of Philippi. Founded in the 7th century B.C.E. as a colony of Thasos, it was significant both for its port and for its commanding location along the coastal route from Thessalonica to Asia Minor. The fleet of Brutus was stationed at Neapolis at the time of the battle of Philippi. The Apostle Paul first set foot in Europe at Neapolis on his first missionary voyage. In later centuries the town was renamed Christoupolis, and it was burned by the Normans on their way to Constantinople in 1185. The city was under Ottoman rule until 1912, and on three separate occasions it has been under Bulgarian occupation, including more than two years during World War II. Virtually nothing remains of the ancient city. The impressive aqueduct on the hills above the city dates from the 16th century, when it was built by Sulëyman the Magnificent. In 1769 Mehmet Ali, pasha of Egypt, was born in Kavala. In Troas Paul had a vision in which he saw a man of Macedonia asking him to come to his country: “During the night Paul had a vision: there stood a man of Macedonia pleading with him and saying, ‘Come over to Macedonia and help us.’ When he had seen the vision, we immediately tried to cross over to Macedonia, being convinced that God had called us to proclaim the good news to them” (Acts 16:9–10). The rapid expansion of Christianity to the west largely was due to Paul’s decision to follow the prompting of this vision. This biblical statement is significant also because it is the first use of the first-person plural, we, in the Acts narrative, possibly indicating that the writer of Acts, traditionally regarded as Luke, now accompanies Paul on this portion of his travels.
