Lombok Island is famous for its Thousand Islands mosque. This is because on the island of Lombok there are very many mosques, almost every neighborhood (RW) has a mosque and it is not uncommon to find 2 large mosques facing or next to each other. Of the many mosques on the island of Lombok, there are several mosque buildings facing west, and there are also facing west leading north. This shows the difference in Qibla direction, so the need for calculations and re-measurements.

Lombok island is a small area located on the border between the large Asian plate and the Autralian plate so that the islan of Lombok is verry vulnerable to the earthquake disasters. The level of damage caused by an earthquake depends on the strength and quality of the building, geological, and geotechtonic conditions and the maximum ground vibration acceleration of the area. This study aims to analyze the acceleration of ground vibrations to map earthquake vulnerability using the Fukushima Tanaka, Esteva, and Euclidean Distance methods on the island of Lombok. The data used is secondary data for earthquakes on the island of Lombok in Juli-September 2018. The calculation result show that the maximum ground vibration acceleration value is the highest of 100.810 gal located in the districts of EastbLombok and North Lombok. While the smallestmaximum ground vibrations acceleration value occurs in the Mataram and surrounding areas with a value of 0,3603 gal. From the three formulations, it can be seen that the value of ground vibration acceleration calculated in the area of the island of Lombok using the Fukushima Tanaka method is the most appropriate formula for calculating the value of ground accelaration on the Lombok island. That is because the value of the ground vibration acceleration from Fukushima Tanaka is almost the same as the ground vibration acceleration value from the accelerograph

Indonesia is exposed to earthquakes, volcanic activities, and associated tsunamis. This is particularly the case for Lombok and Sumbawa Islands in West Nusa Tenggara, where evidence of tsunamis is frequently observed in its coastal sedimentary record. If the 1815 CE Tambora eruption on Sumbawa Island generated a tsunami with well-identified traces on the surrounding islands, little is known about the consequences of the 1257 CE tremendous eruption of Samalas on the neighboring islands, and especially about the possible tsunamis generated in reason of a paucity of research on coastal sedimentary records in this area. However, on Lombok Island, the eruption of the Samalas volcano produced significant volumes of pyroclastic flows that entered the sea in the North and East of the island. These phenomena must have produced a tsunami that left their traces, especially on Sumbawa Island, whose western coastline is only 14 km away from Lombok’s eastern shore. Therefore, the main goal of this study is to investigate, find evidence, and determine the age of marine-origin sediments along the shore of the Alas Strait, Indonesia. We collected and analyzed samples of coral and seashells from marine deposits identified along the west coast of Sumbawa, i.e., in Belang Island and abandoned fishponds in Kiantar Village, in order to identify the sources and the occurrence period of these deposits events. Based on the radiocarbon dating of coral and seashell samples, we concluded that none of the identified marine deposits along the western coast of Sumbawa could be related chronologically to the 1257 CE eruption of Samalas. However, possible tsunami deposits located in Belang Island and abandoned fishponds in Kiantar Village yielded 4th century CE, 9th century CE, and 17th century CE. We also conclude that past large earthquakes triggered these tsunamis since no known volcanic eruption occurred near the Alas Strait at that time that may have triggered a tsunami.

This research is a qualitative research. Where the purpose of this research is to find out how the shifts of the earth’s plates around Lombok Island can increase the frequency of potential earthquakes on Lombok Island. This study uses a qualitative approach by paying attention to the theory of earth’s plates and the movements of the earh’s plates that have been described previously. The results of this study indicate a link between earth plate shifts and the frequency of earthquakes on Lombok Island. The world’s active tectonic plates in which the movements of two of them (the Indo-Australian Plate and the Eurasian Plate) greatly affect the frequency of earthquakes due to passing through Lombok Island. In addition to the two active tectonics plates of the world, there is also one Fault namely the Flores Up Fault which stretches from Flores to Lombok Island which forms a trough amd is very active.

This study qualitatively elaborates fault characteristics causing earthquakes in Lombok Island. Historically, Lombok Island has been 12 destructive and significant earthquakes in period of 1979 – 2018. Therefore, the island is in an earthquake-prone region. The hazard factor is one of the key factors in assessing risk. This study become important as their potential to have a big impact. A source of activity that has not been fully investigated in detail was the location of the recent major and devastating earthquake (East Lombok earthquake 2019). Consequently, there is a chance that the level of risk on the Island of Lombok will rise. According to the study’s results, a thorough investigation is required to identify and pinpoint the cause of the 2019 Lombok earthquake in order to improve the earthquake risk index and help the local government to reduce losses due to earthquakes.

A series of earthquakes occurred at the northern part of Lombok Island during July–September 2018 with the highest Mw7.0 5th August 2018 that caused the death of hundreds of people and ruined thousands of buildings. The earthquakes were triggered on the Flores Thrust located at the back arc zone and at only 50 km distance from the island, leading to multiple seismic hazards to Lombok and surrounding islands. The thrust could possibly be the dominant current seismic sources; however, the megathrust sources also contributed to the hazards due to the subduction between the Indo-Australia and Eurasia tectonic plates in the Nusa Tenggara region. An updated probabilistic seismic hazard analysis was, therefore, conducted on recent seismicity, detailed tectonic background, and suitable ground motion prediction equations, to determine higher seismic parameter values than the 2017 models. This means that Lombok and surrounding islands exposed to higher seismic hazards than those predicted before the earthquake events in 2018.

SUMMARY The Flores thrust forms the west segment (∼450 km) of a very active, ∼E–W striking, ∼800-km-long backarc thrust along the east Sunda Arc. In 2018, a deadly earthquake sequence composed of ~110 M4+ events rattled the Indonesian island of Lombok near the Flores thrust and caused tremendous damage on the island, however what is the nature of rupturing during this earthquake sequence remains unknown. Here, using a total of 2120 km of high-resolution seismic profiles covering ∼300 km of the Flores thrust off Bali, Lombok and Sumbawa, in addition to earthquake data and InSAR measurements, we investigated the active thrusting during this earthquake sequence. Our seismic interpretation and structural mapping show that offshore north of Lombok and Bali, the remarkable Flores thrust is essentially blind, deforming the seabed by folds, not faults. The Lombok earthquakes were all shallow thrust events with depth <40 km and occurred within ∼35 km north of the Rinjani volcano beneath the Lombok Island and its northern extremity. The InSAR measurements suggested that the most of the crustal deformation caused by these earthquakes occurred the north the and northeast of the island. The maximum vertical deformation was ∼36 cm near the northwest margin of the island, caused by the 5th August Mw 6.9 event. These observations combined with the presence of blind thrusts off Lombok suggest that the offshore portion of Flores thrust did not rupture during the 2018 Lombok earthquake sequence; the most coseismic slip must have occurred along a deep-rooted, north-verging basal fault and a range of imbricate thrusts beneath the north of the island, not along the buried thrusts offshore. Despite being blind off Lombok and Bali, the Flores thrust can still pose tsunami threats to the adjacent population centres by rupturing the seafloor during future large earthquakes (M > 7) that occur directly on the offshore blind thrusts, not beneath the island like the Lombok sequence. The proximity of the Rinjani volcano and thrust earthquakes suggests a possible role of volcanic activity (e.g. magmatic fluids and gas migration, stress change induced by pressurized magma chamber) in inducing the Lombok earthquakes.

Abstract The Lombok earthquake in 2018 was unique, the shocks occurred sequentially. Several major earthquakes were followed by thousands of aftershocks. The earthquake caused a devastating disaster which destroyed many homes, buildings including wells as the main fresh water supply in the Lombok Island. The focal mechanism of main earthquake shows a thrust fault mechanism. Lombok Island is originally a volcano Island which is still growing actively. Therefore surface of Island is dominated by volcanic materials, such as: volcanic rock, volcanic ash, pumice. This paper describes the phenomenon of sanding wells in Lombok, including the physical mechanisms among rock’s grains when vibrating earthquake waves. These earthquake waves can eliminate static friction between grains and reduce cohesion between grains of rock. Some subsurface images shows a strong correlation between damage grade and the existence of loose sand and hard rock.

Serenting Beach is one of the beaches in the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (MSEZ), Central Lombok Regency. The MSEZ is located in the southern part of Lombok Island and faces the Indian Ocean. The Mandalika Special Economic Zone is prospected to expedite the sector of tourism at Province of West Nusa Tenggara which is very potential. A few hundred kilometers to the south part of Lombok Island is one of the large tectonic plates meeting zones which is a major source of potential tsunami earthquakes. With the geological conditions of Lombok Island which is prone to tsunamis and the existence of environmental degradation in Serenting Beach, MSEZ, it is necessary to conduct research about study of tsunami mitigation based on vegetation in Serenting Beach, MSEZ, Lombok Island. Based on the research, there are several types of plants that need to be planted as a tsunami disaster mitigation effort in Serenting Beach, MSEZ, namely: Casuarina equisetifolia, Pandanus odoratissimus, Cocos nucifera, Hibiscus tiliaceus, and Terminalia catappa. The government and various related parties need to provide education to the public, tourism managers, and tourists to take an active role in protecting vegetation and not through illegal logging.

Lombok Island is located in the Nusatenggara region, which is considered as one of the most active seismic parts of Indonesia. The determination of seismicity is crucial to the island, since Lombok Island is a relatively dense populated small island. Earthquakes that occurred around the island were generated by southern subduction mega-thrust and northern back-arc thrust. Mostly, distributions are concentrated on the north-west and south-east parts of Lombok Island. Probabilistic data analysis of 309 earthquake events during the period of 1973 - 2017 results in the Gutenberg-Richter parameters (a and b) of 3.62 and-0.53 indicating medium to high seismic activities. The Joyner-Boore attenuation relation seems to be suitable for seismic characteristics of the island. The reconstruction of tectonic setting indicates that the Benioff zone may develop at the depths of 150 km beneath the island causing horizontal tectonic forces working within the direction of N 171 °E - N 351 °E. This could create a strike-slip fault on the crustal basement within the NE - SW direction.

The island of Lombok with the majority of its original inhabitants, namely the Sasak tribe, has known and used a number of plants as typical food or vegetables to complement the main menu. Typical vegetables are vegetables that are only found in an area, at a certain season and processed in a special way. Currently, the existence of vegetables typical of the island of Lombok is rarely found and some of them are starting to become extinct. This study aims to obtain data related to the diversity of species, economic value and distribution of typical vegetables on the island of Lombok. The information obtained is very much needed in building a data base that can be used as important information in the process of plant conservation and domestication. The research method used was an exploratory survey with a qualitative approach through a structured interview technique using a questionnaire that was presented orally. The research locations were all districts on the island of Lombok. The results showed that there were 53 types of vegetables typical of the island of Lombok. Trees are the most common types of habitus (17 species), then shrubs (16 species), herbaceous species (14) and 10 creeping types. Young leaves are part of the plant that is most widely used as a vegetable. Most of these vegetables are not traded and grow wild in forests or cultivated areas. The districts of East Lombok and Central Lombok are the areas where the most of these types of vegetables are found, while the city of Mataram is the area with the least. The small area and the lack of green open space are suspected to be the cause of the reduction in the typical vegetables found in the city of Mataram.

One approach to suppress malaria spread is to eliminate anopheline larvae in their habitat and the environmentally safe agent is bacteria, that is,Bacillus sphaericus. However, there is no information regarding local isolate ofB. sphaericusthat is toxic to mosquito larvae from Lombok. The aims of the study were to isolateB. sphaericusfrom soil in areas close to beach surrounding Lombok Island and to test their toxicity against 3rd instarAnopheles aconituslarvae. Soil samples were collected from 20 different sampling locations from Lombok Island and homogenized with sterile physiological salt solution. Suspension was heat-shocked at 80°C for 30 minutes and then spread onto antibiotic-supplemented NYSM solid medium. Colonies grown were characterized and subjected to initial toxicity test against anopheline larvae. Isolates with more than 50% killing percentage were subjected to bioassay testing against anopheline larvae. From 20 locations, 1 isolate showed mild toxicity (namely, isolate MNT) and 2 isolates showed high toxicity (namely, isolates SLG and TJL2) againstAn. aconitus. Those 3 isolates were potentially useful isolates, as they killed almost all larvae in 24 hours. The discovery of toxic indigenous isolates ofB. sphaericusfrom Lombok Island opens opportunity to develop a biopesticide from local resources.

A great number of classical intellectual treatises, usually called manuscripts, can be found in Lombok, an island in West Nusa Tenggara province. All the manuscripts indicate that writing tradition has been growing in this island since a long time ago. Of many factors influenced the growing of that tradition is trade relationship between Lombok traders and those from other islands. Some significant contributions can be traced through languages ever used in oral communication and in works produced in the community i.e. Sasak, Java, Bali, and Malay, Sanskrit, Arabics. The relationship also contributed to rising intellectual activity and enriching contents of the manuscripts. This article observes historical sides of the writing tradition by providing historical data, epigraphs and other supporting resources that made the writing tradition exist. The article tradition in Sasak community is predicted to have been started since the Sasak people recognized writing system, and have developed hundreds of years ago, producing thousands of manuscripts in some different languages, titles and forms. The writing systems used were varied such as old Javanese, Arab, Bali and Bugis. And the languages used were old Java, Java, Bali, Arabic and Malay. This indicates that, long time ago, Sasak people had made contact with people from many parts of this archipelago like Bali, Java, Malay and even Celebes (Bugis).

Abstract Islam reached Lombok Island in the sixteenth century, approximately in 1545, which was brought by SunanGiri, the son of SunanPrapen, one of the prominent Islamic preachers known as Wali Songo, through an expedition from Java. Prior to its arrival in the Island, according to some historians, the indigenous Sasak (the indigenous people of Lombok) embraced a traditional belief known as Boda. Historically, since its establishment, Islam has perpetually been expanding despite facing some distinct and contradictory values of local tradition and culture, which leads to a kind of dialectical process and turns in what is known as local Islam such as Islam WetuTelu in Bayan, West Lombok. This article is aimed at revealing the historical root of religious identity of Sasak community. The historical sketch of its religious identity produces a combination of traditional, cultural and religious values of the comers with those of the indigenous people in the past, WetuTelu religion. Present Muslims in Lombok assume that the existence of traditional Islam is due to an incomplete process of Islamization in the Island.

This study aims to describe the molecular characteristics of DNA barcodes in chocolate hind grouper (Cephalopholis boenak) in Indonesian waters with new sequence records from Madura Island waters. Partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase 1 (CO1) gene were successfully obtained from two samples of C. boenak in Madura Island waters. In contrast, the other sequences were obtained from the BOLD system database, covering the Islands of Bali, Lombok, and Ambon waters. The overall molecular analysis involved 10 C. boenak sequences with a length of 625 bp. The results indicated that the population of C. boenak in Indonesia waters has high genetic diversity, as evidenced by the value of haplotype diversity (Hd) = 0.956 and nucleotide sequence diversity (Pi) = 0.01746, in which the population is distributed into eight haplotypes. Results of phylogenetic tree reconstruction of neighbor-joining and maximum-likelihood indicate similar topology. The branching of NJ and ML phylogenetic trees of C. boenak in Indonesia waters is grouped into two geographical clades. Clade 1 with the subpopulations of the waters from Madura, Bali, and Lombok Islands. Clade 2 with the subpopulations of the waters from Ambon Island. The results of the median-joining network reconstruction depicted a similar topology with both phylogenetic trees.

Although Lombok of West Nusa Tenggara has gained an excellent international reputation for its halal tourism (2015-2018), tourism in the region is not without obstacles. Several elements of the Sasak-Lombok community, for instance, still refuse the concept of halal tourism because it is likely to cause harm to conventional tourism. This article will examine potentials, challenges, and the role of Islamic education in halal tourism in Lombok. It employs a descriptive-qualitative approach, where data collection is obtained from focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, document analysis, and media reporting. Meanwhile, data validity testing is carried out with the triangulation technique. After a profound analysis, this research found that: (1) the potentials for halal tourism in Lombok are made of its natural beauty, cultural distinctiveness, and tradition of the local community predominated by Muslims; (2) the challenges of halal tourism in Lombok include two things: a) conceptual challenges that deal with the absence of terms representing the desires of all parties, and b) practical problems that deal with economic, environmental, social, and cultural matters; (3) Islamic education—as a value, activity, or institution—plays a vital role in disseminating representative concepts for halal tourism acceptable to all parties, i.e. the local community, tourism actors, and government. This acceptance is one of the keys to the successful development of halal tourism in Lombok.

Tea tree is an essential oil-producing plant from Australia which is also found growing in several parts of Indonesia, including the island of Lombok. So far, tea tree essential oil producers on the island of Lombok do not utilize by-products in the form of hydrosol (distilled water) produced in the process of making essential oils. In this study, the characterization and analysis of the chemical composition of the hydrosol of tea tree leaves growing on the island of Lombok was carried out. The characteristic aroma of hydrosol is similar to that of tea tree essential oil. The results of the GC-MS analysis also showed that the hydrosol of tea tree leaves also had similarities with the essential oil, composed of major compounds in the form of trans-caryophyllene (28.58%), limonene (13.98%) and terpinen-4-ol (16.27%). Other compounds detected were -pinene (4.14%), -pinene (6.50%), -myrcene (8.09%), -terpineol (10.10%) and -terpinene (5.77%).

Background: The success of implementing a sustainable event in a tourist destination cannot be separated from the influence of the quality of human resources (human capital) and planning strategies. However, studies of the interdependence between human capital and planning strategies in achieving successful implementation of sustainable events, especially on the island of Lombok, are still limited Methodology: This study aims to examine and analyze the extent to which aspects of human capital and strategic planning play a role in optimizing the implementation of events on the island of Lombok. The method used is a literature review from journals and trusted sources, as well as problem analysis through in-depth interviews with resource persons involved in the implementation of the event. The focus of this study is to compare tourism events, namely the Bali Arts Festival (PKB) in Bali and the Bau Nyale Festival in Lombok Findings: The results of in-depth interviews with several sources show that the PKB held on the island of Bali is still superior in the number of enthusiasts and concepts than the implementation of the Bau Nyale Festival on the island of Lombok. This is shown by the length of the PKB implementation and the age of the PKB which has been going on in the past 4 decades ago. In addition, the main factor that affects the sustainability of PKB is the quality of human resources in the tourism sector on the island of Bali, which is superior to the island of Lombok, so as to be able to formulate effective and creative planning in packaging the event. To achieve the sustainability of the event in Lombok, it is necessary to increase human capital and appropriate planning strategies through counselling, training, and the availability of Meeting study programs. Conclusion: Human capital and strategic planning play important roles for achieving sustainable event to support the development of tourist destination. The result of comparison study between Bali Arts Festival and Bau Nyale Festival shows that Bali Arts Festival was greater than Bau Nyale festival in terms of numbers of visitors and implementation concepts. This was proved by the length of festival and number of tourists visiting. Bali Arts Festival has been run for about 40 years, while Bau Nyale Festival has been currently occurred in Lombok. In addition, human capital in Bali Arts Festival was greater showing in how well management applied during the event, so that, it is able to plan with a precise strategy in achieving sustainable event.
