Streszczenie:
We consider the neuromorphic dynamics of a filter-free phase locked loop with a phase modulation of a reference oscillator. The transition from pulsed single-spike dynamics to the bursting dynamics can be easily controlled by changing the depth and frequency of phase modulation, as well as the gain factor along the ring of the phase locked loop. The possibility of implementing neuromorphic calculations of the "OR" type in the scheme of three phase locked loops mutually coupled through a common loop filter (control circuit) is shown. The presented results can be used in designing hardware-implementable neuromorphic networks with increased frequency stability, resistant to noise effects. Keywords: neuromorphic dynamics, phase locked loop, logical operations.

Streszczenie:
External cavity semiconductor mode-locked lasers can produce pulses of a few picoseconds. The pulses from these lasers are inherently chirped with a predominant linear chirp component that can be compensated resulting in sub-picosecond pulses. External cavity semiconductor mode-locked lasers can be configured as multiwavelength pulse sources and are good candidates for time and wavelength division multiplexing applications. The gain medium in external cavity semiconductor mode-locked lasers is a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA), and passive and hybrid mode-locked operation are achieved by the introduction of a saturable absorber (SA) in the laser cavity. Pump-probe techniques were used to measure the intracavity absorption dynamics of a SA in an external cavity semiconductor mode-locked laser and the gain dynamics of a SOA for the amplification of diverse pulses. The SOA gain dynamics measurements include the amplification of 750 fs pulses, 6.5 ps pulses, multiwavelength pulses and the intracavity gain dynamics of an external cavity multiwavelength semiconductor mode-locked laser. The experimental results show how the inherent chirp on pulses from external cavity semiconductor mode-locked lasers results in a slow gain depletion without significant fast gain dynamics. In the multiwavelength operation regime of these lasers, the chirp broadens the temporal pulse profile and decreases the temporal beating resulting from the phase correlation among wavelength channels. This results in a slow gain depletion mitigating nonlinearities and gain competition among wavelength channels in the SOA supporting the multiwavelength operation of the laser. Numerical simulations support the experimental results.

Streszczenie:
As a type of nonlinear system with complexity, mode-locked fiber lasers are known for their complex behaviour. It is a challenging task to understand the fundamental physics behind such complex behaviour, and a unified description for the nonlinear behaviour and the systematic and quantitative analysis of the underlying mechanisms of these lasers have not been developed. Here, we present a complexity science-based theoretical framework for understanding the behaviour of mode-locked fiber lasers by going beyond reductionism. This hierarchically structured framework provides a model with variable dimensionality, resulting in a simple view that can be used to systematically describe complex states. Moreover, research into the attractors' basins reveals the origin of stochasticity, hysteresis and multistability in these systems and presents a new method for quantitative analysis of these nonlinear phenomena. These findings pave the way for dynamics analysis and system designs of mode-locked fiber lasers. We expect that this paradigm will also enable potential applications in diverse research fields related to complex nonlinear phenomena.

Mode-locked lasers that produce short optical pulses in the mid-infrared wavelength region have been sought out for a wide range of applications such as free space communication, molecular spectroscopy, medical diagnostics, and remote sensing. Here, a thulium and holmium (Tm/Ho) co-doped fiber laser that mode-locks in both the solitonic and stretched-pulse regimes is used to produce ultra-short pulses in the 2 [mu]m region. Nonlinear polarization rotation technique is used where fiber nonlinearity is responsible to mode-lock the laser. The anomalous group velocity dispersion of both the single mode and gain fibers used limit the laser operation in the solitonic regime where spectral bandwidth is 10 nm and hence the pulse duration is limited to 996 fs. In order to increase the spectral bandwidth and hence get the shorter pulses the anomalous dispersion of these fibers has to compensate using normal group velocity dispersion fiber in the laser cavity. High numerical aperture fibers, which have normal group velocity dispersion around 2 [mu]m due to its large and positive waveguide dispersion, can be used to compensate the anomalous dispersion of the gain and single mode fibers. We used a high numerical aperture fiber called UHNA4 in the laser cavity in order to compensate the anomalous dispersion of other fibers and mode-locked the laser in stretched pulse regime. The spectral bandwidth of the laser increased to 31 nm with corresponding pulse duration of 450 fs measured from the interferometric autocorrelation. The laser dynamics of the Tm/Ho co-doped fiber laser is also studied while going from the stretched-pulse to solitonic regime by fiber cut-back measurements of normal dispersion fiber. It was clearly observed that both the spectral bandwidth and the pulse duration changed significantly going from one region to the other.

Streszczenie:
Vertical external-cavity surface-emitting lasers are ideal testbeds for studying the influence of the non-equilibrium many-body dynamics on mode locking. As we will show in this thesis, ultra short pulse generation involves a marked departure from Fermi carrier distributions assumed in prior theoretical studies. A quantitative model of the mode locking dynamics is presented, where the semiconductor Bloch equations with Maxwell’s equation are coupled, in order to study the influences of quantum well carrier scattering on mode locking dynamics. This is the first work where the full model is solved without adiabatically eliminating the microscopic polarizations. In many instances we find that higher order correlation contributions (e.g. polarization dephasing, carrier scattering, and screening) can be represented by rate models, with the effective rates extracted at the level of second Born-Markov approximations. In other circumstances, such as continuous wave multi-wavelength lasing, we are forced to fully include these higher correlation terms. In this thesis we identify the key contributors that control mode locking dynamics, the stability of single pulse mode-locking, and the influence of higher order correlation in sustaining multi-wavelength continuous wave operation.

This PhD thesis mainly addresses the dynamics and the robustness of a novel concept of mode locking in ultracompact semiconductor nanolasers. Such a nanolaser exhibits Hermite-Gaussian modes created by a harmonic photonic cavity to confine light. This maps the optical cavity into quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator, with evenly spaced eigenfrequencies, an essential requirement for mode locking. The possible nonlinear regimes are described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a parabolic potential and nonlinear terms describing gain and absorption. To investigate these dynamical behaviors, direct numerical simulations are mainly implemented. Continuation calculations are also performed using pde2path.First, the mode competition for gain among Hermite-Gaussian modes in the absence of saturable absorption is investigated and shown to be very different from usual resonators.Second, mode locking is predicted to occur with instantaneous saturation of gain and absorption over a broad range of parameters, corresponding to the emergence of dissipative soliton and multisoliton solutions. The mode locking period is controlled by the design of the photonic potential, and not by the cavity length. The dissipative soliton is well described by the coherent state of a quantum mechanical oscillator, namely a Gaussian envelope oscillating without deformation.Third, in the regime of noninstantaneous gain and absorption saturation, different dynamical behaviors of the nanolaser are obtained by varying the gain and the absorption. These different regimes, including Q-switching, Q-switched mode locking, and CW mode locking, are described in detail, illustrating the rich physics of this nonlinear system. The influence of the Henry factor on the mode locking is also discussed. Moreover, similar dynamical behaviors using spatially separated gain and absorber sections inside the cavity are obtained.Fourth, the robustness of mode locking of the Hermite-Gaussian modes to the disorder of the harmonic cavity is investigated in details. It includes the effect of non-parabolicity of the potential and the random errors in the shape of the potential

Streszczenie:

It is relatively straightforward to establish equilibrium inmagnetically confined plasmas, but the plasma is frequentlysucceptible to a variety of instabilities that are driven bythe free energy in the magnetic field or in the pressuregradient. These unstable modes exhibit effects that affect theparticle, momentum and heat confinement properties of theconfiguration. Studies of the dynamics of several of the mostimportant modes are the subject of this thesis. The studies arecarried out on plasmas in the reversed field pinch (RFP)configuration.

One phenomenon commonly observed in RFPs is mode walllocking. The localized nature of these phase- and wall lockedstructures results in localized power loads on the wall whichare detrimental for confinement. A detailed study of the walllocked mode phenomenon is performed based on magneticmeasurements from three RFP devices. The two possiblemechanisms for wall locking are investigated. Locking as aresult of tearing modes interacting with a static field errorand locking due to the presence of a non-ideal boundary. Thecharacteristics of the wall locked mode are qualitativelysimilar in a device with a conducting shell system (TPE-RX)compared to a device with a resistive shell (Extrap T2). Atheoretical model is used for evaluating the threshold valuesfor wall locking due to eddy currents in the vacuum vessel inthese devices. A good correlation with experiment is observedfor the conducting shell device.

The possibility of succesfully sustaining discharges in aresistive shell RFP is introduced in the recently rebuiltdevice Extrap T2R. Fast spontaneous mode rotation is observed, resulting in low magnetic fluctuations, low loop voltage andimproved confinement. Wall locking is rarely observed. The lowtearingmode amplitudes allow for the theoretically predictedinternal nonresonant on-axis resistive wall modes to beobserved. These modes have not previously been distinguisheddue to the formation of wall locked modes. The internal andexternal nonresonant resistive wall modes grow on the timescale of the shell penetration time. These growth rates dependon the RFP equilibrium. The internal nonresonant resistive wallmodes dominate in Extrap T2R, especially for shallow reverseddischarges. The external nonresonant modes grow solely in deepreversal discharges.

Streszczenie:
The distinction between deterministic and stochastic instabilities in actively mode-locked lasers is investigated theoretically and experimentally. A linear stability analysis performed on the gaussian iterative model predicts deterministic instabilities. Experiments made with a Nd:YAG laser have revealed the appearance of periodic instabilities as the modulation frequency is detuned from optimum. Spontaneous emission can trigger periodic Q-switching with an apparently deterministic character.

Streszczenie:
Although a sizable number of studies have been exploring the migration development nexus in international settings, there is still a reduced number on internal contexts in recent years. This research aims to estimate the causal effect of origin economic conditions on internal population migration using a time series of the Colombian states between 2012 and 2019. This analysis provides a macro perspective of associations and causation between population dynamics and development in the current changes observed using spatial interaction models. Likewise, it analyses the current portray of internal migration in Colombia (defined by five-years and one-year flows). The evidence shows that the migration hump depends on the scale at which it is analyzed. At an aggregated scale, initial economic conditions are negatively associated with migration until a threshold where this relationship is reversed. The opposite is observed in the rural migrants subsample.

Streszczenie:
Rural economic transformations in Africa are generating new opportunities to engage with agricultural value chains. However, many young people are said to be locked out of such opportunities because of limited access to farmland, which pushes them out of agriculture and rural areas, and/or hinders their autonomy. This framing of the ‘land problem’ imperfectly reflects rural young people’s livelihoods in much of sub-Saharan Africa, and therefore does not provide a solid basis for policy. Policy-relevant discussions must consider the diversity of rural contexts, broader land dynamics and more nuanced depictions of youth engagement with the rural economy.

Streszczenie:
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) completed a total of 25 high friction surface treatment (HFST) projects across the state in 2018. This research study attempted to investigate the durability and performance of HFST in terms of its HFST-pavement system integrity and surface friction performance. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the physical and mechanical properties of epoxy-bauxite mortar. Field inspections were carried out to identify site conditions and common early HFST distresses. Cyclic loading test and finite element method (FEM) analysis were performed to evaluate the bonding strength between HFST and existing pavement, in particular chip seal with different pretreatments such as vacuum sweeping, shotblasting, and scarification milling. Both surface friction and texture tests were undertaken periodically (generally once every 6 months) to evaluate the surface friction performance of HFST. Crash records over a 5-year period, i.e., 3 years before installation and 2 years after installation, were examined to determine the safety performance of HFST, crash modification factor (CMF) in particular. It was found that HFST epoxy-bauxite mortar has a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) significantly higher than those of hot mix asphalt (HMA) mixtures and Portland cement concrete (PCC), and good cracking resistance. The most common early HFST distresses in Indiana are reflective cracking, surface wrinkling, aggregate loss, and delamination. Vacuum sweeping is the optimal method for pretreating existing pavements, chip seal in particular. Chip seal in good condition is structurally capable of providing a sound base for HFST. On two-lane highway curves, HFST is capable of reducing the total vehicle crash by 30%, injury crash by 50%, and wet weather crash by 44%, and providing a CMF of 0.584 in Indiana. Great variability may arise in the results of friction tests on horizontal curves by the use of locked wheel skid tester (LWST) due both to the nature of vehicle dynamics and to the operation of test vehicle. Texture testing, however, is capable of providing continuous texture measurements that can be used to calculate a texture height parameter, i.e., mean profile depth (MPD), not only for evaluating friction performance but also implementing quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) plans for HFST.

Vas, Dragos, Elizabeth Corriveau, Lindsay Gaimaro i Robyn Barbato. Challenges and limitations of using autonomous instrumentation for measuring in situ soil respiration in a subarctic boreal forest in Alaska, USA. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), grudzień 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/48018.

Streszczenie:
Subarctic and Arctic environments are sensitive to warming temperatures due to climate change. As soils warm, soil microorganisms break down carbon and release greenhouse gases such as methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂). Recent studies examining CO₂ efflux note heterogeneity of microbial activity across the landscape. To better understand carbon dynamics, our team developed a predictive model, Dynamic Representation of Terrestrial Soil Predictions of Organisms’ Response to the Environment (DRTSPORE), to estimate CO₂ efflux based on soil temperature and moisture estimates. The goal of this work was to acquire respiration rates from a boreal forest located near the town of Fairbanks, Alaska, and to provide in situ measurements for the future validation effort of the DRTSPORE model estimates of CO₂ efflux in cold climates. Results show that soil temperature and seasonal soil thaw depth had the greatest impact on soil respiration. However, the instrumentation deployed significantly altered the soil temperature, moisture, and seasonal thaw depth at the survey site and very likely the soil respiration rates. These findings are important to better understand the challenges and limitations associated with the in situ data collection used for carbon efflux modeling and for estimating soil microbial activity in cold environments.

Streszczenie:
This paper describes private actors' involvement in Colombia's policymaking process. While more transparent and formal channels are used to discuss horizontal policies, they are also less effective. The adoption of targeted policies, however, follows a faster track and depends more on political power than on those policies¿ potential as engines for productivity growth. Data on policies and political characteristics across sector-region units are used to further characterize the different groups¿ weight in policymaking, and the effect of the implied unbalance on aggregate productivity. Electoral weight and being represented by business groups and associations are found to be important determinants of the policy benefits received by a sector in a region, especially when activities are located in regions affected by armed conflict. It is also found that the resulting imbalance of policies damages aggregate productivity.

Streszczenie:
Mechanical damage is one of the most prevalent causes of pipeline failure in North America and Europe. Gouged dents are much more likely to produce a failure than "plain" dents (i.e., a dent with no coincident metal loss or crack features), however the residual stresses around gouged dents are more difficult to model and predict. The Pipeline Aggression Rig (PAR) located in the St. Denis facility of GdF Suez was used to introduce backhoe-type gouging into pipe samples, which were nine pressurized pipe sections of varying grades. Five (5) samples were created using high-impact dynamic aggression (termed High Dynamic) and the other four (4) samples were created using lower impact energy and an axial-dragging mechanism (termed Low Dynamic). This project involved using neutron diffraction to measure the residual stresses in and around these gouged dents. Key findings are as follows: - In the undamaged regions of all samples, residual stresses were low (typically medium gouges were localized and residual stresses were largely bending-related: mild tensile at the outer wall/gouge base and compressive at the inner wall. - Residual stresses in and around one (1) High Dynamic severe gouge were tensile and critically high. - Residual stresses in and around Low Dynamic gouges had inconsistent and unpredictable residual stress magnitudes and distributions. PRCI members will find value in this information for understanding the severity of gouges in pipelines, for use in stress modelling verification, and, finally, for understanding characterizing MFL signals from ILI tools.

Baron, Lisa, William Vervaeke i M. Gregory. Monitoring coastal wetland elevation in Southeast Coast Network parks: Protocol implementation plan. National Park Service, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2301244.

Streszczenie:
The National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring Division has initiated coastal wetland elevation monitoring at or in the vicinity of Cape Hatteras National Seashore (CAHA), Cape Lookout National Seashore (CALO), Fort Pulaski National Monument (FOPU), Fort Frederica National Monument (FOFR), Cumberland Island National Seashore (CUIS), Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve (TIMU), Fort Matanzas National Monument (FOMA), and Canaveral National Seashore (CANA). This protocol implementation plan is based on the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network protocol, The Surface Elevation Table and Marker Horizon Technique: A Protocol for Monitoring Wetland Elevation Dynamics (Lynch et al. 2015) with the goal of ensuring NPS data are comparable with existing, contemporary, and future data sets collected by NPS monitoring networks and other monitoring programs. The Southeast Coast Network?s (SECN) coastal wetland monitoring effort collects surface elevation and marker horizon data at permanent monitoring stations in park salt marsh and mangrove wetlands to provide data to park resource managers on the status of, and trends in, coastal wetland conditions and abilities to adapt to sea level rise within the park and surrounding areas. In addition to sites located with park managed areas, multiple sites located within the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTMNERR) are being monitored in a partnership with their system-wide wetland elevation monitoring program. The sites monitored through the GTMNERR partnership are near Fort Matanzas National Monument and Castillo de San Marcos National Monument (CASA), geographically located between Canaveral National Seashore and Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve. Similarly, other partnerships will be perused around other parks to better understand wetland elevation dynamics around those areas. The purpose of this protocol implementation plan is twofold: to provide a monitoring framework for collecting scientifically sound data and to supply information to help evaluate the current status and trends in coastal wetland conditions. Understanding trends in coastal wetland condition and how stressors such as coastal storms and sea level rise affect them is important for managing these important ecosystems. Surface elevation and marker horizon data can be leveraged to determine if current management practices or environmental conditions are sustaining the desired functions and uses of the parks. Data collected under this protocol implementation plan are stored in the NPS Surface Elevation Table (SET) Monitoring Database (NPS I&M 2017). In addition to utilizing customized data handling and reporting procedures, this plan and its accompanying standard operating procedures (SOPs) set guidelines for data to be made available internally to park resource managers and employees along with publication to larger audiences via peer-reviewed reports and briefing statements.

Streszczenie:
Coastal topography was ranked as one of the most important variables for monitoring following a review of potential vital signs in the coastal parks of the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network (NCBN). Changes in coastal topography, whether caused by erosion or accretion, vary both spatially and temporally. Understanding these variations is key to early recognition of potential problems affecting natural and cultural resources in coastal parks. For managers, understanding spatial and temporal patterns of geomorphologic change is basic to optimal management of any coastal park because the interface of marine and land systems 1) is highly dynamic and driven by multiple forcing mechanisms, 2) results in alterations to resource patterns and dynamics at habitat and ecosystem levels, and 3) can eventually result in the loss of static resources. The establishment of local, long-term monitoring programs help us to understand the processes that are driving coastal change of beaches, dunes, and bluffs within the parks. This Coastal Topography Monitoring Protocol has been developed for use in the Northeast Coastal and Barrier Network parks. Monitoring is accomplished with survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS)/Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) equipment that collects topographic data along pre-established transects spaced at regular intervals, augmented by more intense data-collection in areas of special concern to the parks. A network of high-quality survey control monuments (often referred to as benchmarks), used as accuracy assessment reference is located within each of the NCBN parks, providing a robust basis for long-term monitoring. Spring and/or fall surveys conducted in accordance with standard operating procedures generate coastal topography datasets that are organized and assembled by the NCBN data manager into a database for analysis and archival purposes. Dimensional parameters are measured to describe the beach-dune-bluff system, and attributes are compared and analyzed in a cross-shore and alongshore perspective, providing information about the temporal and spatial changes on beach-dune-bluff morphologies in the parks. The overall goal is to create a replicable means of data gathering that is efficient, adheres to scientific principles, and meets the management needs of the coastal parks.

Streszczenie:
This study seeks to determine whether the Fruta del Norte project affected the main economic and social indicators of the Yantzaza canton, where the large-scale mining project is located. To do so, the analysis centers on key economic variables (such as business productivity and employment) and development variables (such as health and school enrollment). The specific methodology used is a synthetic control model, which enables the generation of a counterfactual for the treated canton. The findings suggest that Fruta del Norte had a positive impact on local economic activity in Yantzaza. The local economic dynamism spurred by Fruta del Norte had positive effects on local formal employment; however, increases in the rates of school dropout and adolescent pregnancy were observed.
