The article is a publication of the Grave 1 excavated in the necropolis of Luchistoe-2, which is so far the only known archaeological site in Southern Crimea with burial structures of the Early Roman period. The article includes suggestions regarding the scale and date of the necropolis, as well as the funerary rite, costume and cultural connections of the society using the burial-ground. It was established that the published grave contained the burial of a woman of high social status (probably a priestess) dated from the late-1st or early-2nd century ad. Analysis of the archaeological material in conjunction with information about the location of the necropolis and data from epigraphic documents and ancient litterary tradition, leads to the conclusion that the burial-ground was located in ‘Taurica’ – the territory between the Greek polis of Chersonesos and the Bosporan kingdom. It was used by the population, which was designated in the written sources as Scytho-Taurians (Plin. nh., iv, 85-86; Arr. ppe. 30). These peoples were bearers of the so-called Late Scythian archaeological culture and belonged to the sphere of the Bosporan state’s cultural influence. This information can be used in further reconstructions of the ethno-political situation in the Crimea in Roman times.

Abstract This study reviews Nicasius Ellebodius’s Pozsony (today: Bratislava) period (1571–77) from a biographical and intellectual historical perspective. Ellebodius (1535–1577) was a Flemish philologist of vast erudition, one of the finest Graecists of his day. His biography and character are much less discussed in scholarship than his works, although his letters provide us with invaluable information about his life, as well as about the participation of the academic elite of 16th-century Hungary in the international res publica litteraria. The article will revisit the problem of how far he could realize the otium litterarum that he yearned for so much, and what challenges he had to face in his everyday life in Pozsony.

U radu se donose rezultati istraživanja latinskih povijesnojezičnih izvora koji otkrivaju što su o jeziku i pismu Hrvata znali europski renesansni humanisti prije nego što su prvi pokušaji kodifikacije hrvatskoga jezika u povijesnome i ideološkome kontekstu katoličke obnove osigurali njegovo službeno uključivanje u jezični zemljovid Europe. Šesnaestostoljetna je res publica litteraria, zahvaljujući intenzivnim humanističkim kontaktima i vezama, između ostalih tema omogućila i širenje ideje humanističkoga ilirizma koji je uključivao i pitanje jezika slavenskih naroda, pa tako i hrvatskoga. Sudionici te ranonovovjekovne zajednice intelektualaca razmjenjivali su, i u svojim raspravama diljem Europe objavljivali, podatke o hrvatskome jeziku i pismu. Takve su bilješke potvrđene u djelima francuskoga lingvista Guillauma Postela (Linguarum duodecim characteribus differentium alphabetum, 1538., Pariz) te švicarskih filologa Theodora Bibliandera (De ratione communi omnium linguarum et litterarum commentarius, 1548., Zürich) i Conrada Gesnera (Mithridates sive de differentiis linguarum tum veterum tum quae hodie apud diversas nationes in toto orbe terrarum in usu sunt, 1555., Zürich). U humanističkim je početcima kontrastivne lingvistike sudjelovao i jedan hrvatski latinist. Riječ je o Bartolu Đurđeviću i njegovu djelu o nevoljama kršćanskih zarobljenika pod turskom vlašću (De afflictione tam captivorum quam etiam sub Turcae tributo viventium Christianorum, 1544., Antverpen). Đurđević je prikazao razlike između hrvatskoga i turskoga jezika, objavio mali hrvatsko-latinski rječnik i tekst Očenaša, koji je kao ogledni tekst ilirskoga jezika citiran u spomenutome Biblianderovu i Gesnerovu repertoriju svjetskih jezika.

The review does not make the case that the recent republication of George Littera’s work is relevant for todays film criticism. On the contrary, it suggests that contemporary film criticism might not stand very well in the light of Littera’s work. In particular, it shows how his writing is concerned with the idea of value and contradictions, which is less investigated in new work concerned with subjects of history such as the working class. First, it details Littera’s assessment of Soviet avant-garde cinema. Second, it compares his book with the work of one of his UNATC collegues such as Florian Potra. Finally, it briefly investigates a mode of production and essay writing which has disappeared as technique.

In his Res Gestae, the historian Ammianus Marcellinus describes the Egyptian city of Thebes and the obelisks that can be found there. There is an unusual passage in which he describes hieroglyphic writings. He goes on to show, through two examples, how hieroglyphs might seem bizarre, but in fact contain their own logic which can be explained (Amm. The famous eastern tour of inspection undertaken by Scipio Aemilianus, L. Metellus Calvus and Sp. Mummius is now generally dated 140/39 b.c., where Diodorus seems to put it. The accepted view, however, involves discounting an explicit statement by Cicero. It also presents historical difficulties. In 140 b.c. there was no need for such a high-powered Roman initiative, and scholars can discover only very minor political results. Sherwin-White indeed criticised the envoys severely, especially Scipio; they were culpably blind to the new menace of Parthia, which was steadily dismembering the Seleucid Empire east of the Euphrates. This is fair criticism only on the 140/39 b.c. dating. Did Scipio and his colleagues fail to see what is patent to us today? It is time to reexamine rigorously the underlying assumption.In Acad. prior. 2.5 Cicero defends a Roman noble's love of Greek learning in the following terms:ego autem cum Graecas litteras M. Catonem in senectute didicisse acceperim, P. autem Africani historiae loquantur in legatione illa nobili, quam ante censuram obiit, Panaetium unum omnino comitem fuisse, nec litterarum Graecarum nee philosophiae iam ullum auctorem requiro.The date of the embassy must be 144/3 b.c., if we follow the logic of this passage. Scipio was censor with L. Mummius in 142/1 b.c. and their public quarrel was hardly less notable than the embassy, in which L. Mummius' brother shared. Another Ciceronian passage – written some six years earlier – seems to contradict the dating offered in 45 b.c. This article examines the functions of feminism in the critical reception of Kristina Sandberg’s Maj-Trilogy, published 2010-2014. Detailing the evaluative patterns of reviews, it is shown that critics’ increased attention to feminist politics and women’s history in the novels was tied to a de-aestheticizing rhetoric, exemplifying gender hierarchies on the literary field. However, the trilogy’s critical and commercial success is also shown to be based on conception of the women’s cause and feminist writing traditions. Connecting these points, the article argues that a principal function of feminism on the contemporary Swedish book market is to make varying evaluative principles visible, and to bridge the boundaries of cultural, political and social fields.

Uppsatsen undersöker kannibalen som en kolonial gestalt inom litteratur från tidigmodern tid till senmodern tid och vad dess gestaltning berättar om samtida idéströmningar och värderingar. Undersökningen baseras på tre skönlitterära verk. Dessa verk är: Robinson Crusoe (1719), Moby Dick (1851) och The Silence of The Lambs (1988). Verken har gemensamt att de samtliga har gjort ett stort avtryck på litteraturhistorien och gestaltar kannibalkaraktärer på olika sätt. Genom att undersöka dessa gestalter i förhållande till deras kontext har olika värderingar kunnat synliggöras. I en tidigmodern kontext präglades gestaltningen av kannibalen av samtida upplysningsideal där kolonialism och slaveri sågs som en nödvändig process i samband med att civilisera befolkningarna boende på öar i Karibien och Stilla havet. Skapandet av kannibalgestalten blev i denna kontext viktig som motpol för den vita europeiska människan som genom definierandet av kannibalen, även definierade sig själv som en rättmätig kolonisatör. I ett senare skede under 1800-talet finns kannibalen som litterär gestalt kvar och beskrevs med liknande attribut såsom vilde och kannibal. Skillnaden är att kannibalen nu befinner sig inom den västerländska civilisationen och sjöfarten vilket visar på kolonialiseringens effekter samt en alltmer globaliserad värld. Koloniala värderingar finns dock kvar och präglar gestaltningen av kannibalen. I en senmodern kontext har kannibalgestaltningen frigjorts från den så kallade vilden med utomeuropeisk bakgrund. Istället används den nu som ett attribut för att göra seriemördare och psykopater ännu läskigare. Undersökningen visar här att kannibalgestalten står som representant för ett 1900-tal starkt präglat av krig och konflikter där fascinationen gentemot våld och terror har ökat. Kannibalen är i denna kontext återkommande och visar på den moraliska människans förfall och gestaltar den rädsla som vi människor numera känner inför oss själva och andra. I ett vidare skede landar undersökningen i att kannibalen som kulturfenomen och monsterskapelse fortfarande säger något om dess samtid, då den fortfarande återkommer inom olika kulturuttryck där den gestaltar ett samhälle stort präglat av våld och konflikter samt en stor fascination gentemot dessa intryck. Uppsatsen avslutas med en didaktisk reflektion kring hur kannibalen kan fylla ett syfte i en utbildningssituation, då i samband med arbete kring olika typer av kulturuttryck som kan visa på olika historiska kontexter och idéströmningar.

La premiere partie inclut l'etude du cadre theorique de reference et examine : - la notion de litterature renvoyant essentiellement a deux points specifiques : son caractere d'instance legitimante et son caractere de mecanisme restrictif pour l'etude des diverses pro- ductions culturelles centre-americaines. - la notion d'histoire vue a travers des criteres historico-cul- turels determines. La deuxieme partie est construite autour la notion de structuration destructuration d'une tradition d'ecriture et d'une tradition historico-culturelle a travers deux categories de systematisation : les genres et les ecoles ou mouvements litteraires. The analysis made in this thesis is organized in three parts. Each one of these parts studies specific aspects that relate to the construction procedures of one particular significant practice : the literary history in central america and the legitimization procedures of a notion of national identity exposed in the chosen texts. The first part includes the study of the theoritical frame-work of reference and examines : - the notion of literature, essentially on two points : its caracter of legitimate instance and restrictive mecanism for the study of various central america cultural productions. - the notion of history seen through certain historical-cul- tural criterion. Durant les dernières décennies du XIXe siècle, Jean Richepin s’est illustré à la fois en tant qu’écrivain et en tant que journaliste. Sa notoriété a rapidement dépassé les seules bornes de la littérature. Entourée d’une légende qui s’est épaissie autour de lui au cours de sa vie, la figure de l’écrivain a bien souvent servi de faire-valoir à son œuvre. Aujourd’hui, cette même légende rend difficilement intelligible l’itinéraire de l’écrivain au sein du champ littéraire. La présente thèse a souhaité analyser la trajectoire de Jean Richepin au sein du champ littéraire pendant sa période d’activité (1865-1926) en proposant un regard critique sur les représentations médiatiques du personnage de l’écrivain. Par ailleurs, ce travail entend retracer l’itinéraire de Jean Richepin afin d’en cerner les étapes-clés et d’interroger les points aveugles de sa production littéraire
In the last decades of the 19th century, Jean Richepin was both a writer and a journalist. His fame quickly spread beyond the literary world. Surrounded by a legend that grew around him during his lifetime, the figure of the writer has often served as a foil for his work. Today, this same legend makes it difficult to understand the writer's trajectory within the literary field. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the trajectory of Jean Richepin within the literary field during his period of activity (1865-1926), by taking a critical look at the media representations of the writer's character. Furthermore, this work aims to retrace Jean Richepin's journey in order to identify the key stages and question the blind spots in his literary production

Le but de ce travail est d’étudier les apparitions de l’Histoire dans la littérature argentine contemporaine. La littérature crée des univers autonomes dont l’impossibilité est le corps, et partant l’action. Elle s’inspire néanmoins du réel ; il est sa seule limite. Dans le réagencement que la littérature opère sur le réel, on peut donc trouver des traces de l’Histoire. L’historiographie, quant à elle, peut sembler être un récit partiel, découlant des nombreuses sélections des documents de l’historien influencé par son temps et par le pouvoir qui le régit : l’histoire officielle, à de nombreux égards, est une construction artificielle. En Argentine, dans la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle, les régimes militaires interrompent l’écriture de l’Histoire. Le roman argentin contemporain préserve la mémoire collective en évoquant des faits que le pouvoir militaire fait disparaître de l’Histoire. En outre, la littérature nationale ayant émergé dans les années 50, elle devient l’espace de préservation d’une identité nationale, face à l’instrumentalisation de l’Histoire par le pouvoir et à l’écriture conquérante de l’Histoire par l’Europe
The purpose of this work is to study the manifestations of History in contemporary Argentinean literature. Literature creates autonomous universes whose impossibility is the body, and therefore the action. However it draws its inspiration from the reality that is its only limit. Then in the reconstruction operated by literature upon real, traces of history may be found. As regards historiography it may appear as a partial account, following from many selections of documents by the historian, himself under influence of his time, and the power he is governed by: the official history, in many respects is an artificial construction. In Argentina, during the second half of the XXth century, the military governments suspended the writing of History. Argentinean contemporary novels preserve collective memory evoking facts that military power gets disappear from History. Moreover, as national literature has emerged in the 50’s, its becomes a mean of preservation for the national identity, that stood up to the misuse and distorting of History by the power, and Europe’s conquering writing of History

Eugène Fromentin was an accomplished man of art. A cultured writer, painter, and critic, he dedicated his life to conveying through the use of the pen and the brush his passion for travelling in faraway countries. His literary works include two travel books (Un été dans le Sahara and Une année dans le Sahel), a psychological and autobiographic novel (Dominique), and a critical analysis of the 16th century Flemish school of painting ( Les Maîtres d'autrefois). As a painter, he was best known for his orientalist artwork and the visual translation of his travel experiences in Algeria on canvas. This thesis examines the correspondence between the narrative and the plastic domains of Fromentin within the orientalist artistic context of painters and writers of themid-19th century. This includes the influence of the Romantic and Realist schools on Fromentin's literary work and the placement of his work within the framework of his contemporaries, such as François-René de Chateaubriand and Gustave Flaubert. George Sand also played a significant role in Fromentin's literary life. As a painter, Fromentin's primary influences were the painter Louis-Nicolas Cabat, the Romantic painter Eugène Delacroix, and the Dutch School. Subsequently, Fromentin's literary works and paintings reflect the intersection of these influences and the expression of visual and literary links unique to this master.

Le chap. 1 est consacre aux recueils des freres grimm, d'asbjornsen et moe, de hylten-cavalius et et stephens, et montre le passage d'un recit oral au texte ecrit et son entree dans la litterature. Le chap. 2 etudie les remaniements du modele traditionnel par h. -c. Andersen; le chap. 3, l'assimilation des contes anderseniens par les suedois et le developpement du genre chez w. A. Backman e z. Topelius. Le chap. 4 decrit la periode la plus feconde de l'histoire du conte litteraire en suede, celle de la fin du 19-eme - debut du 20-eme s. Et etudie ses mecanismes narratifs. The present study deals with the transformation of the fairy-tale generic models in the swedish hildrens' literature during the period of the 19th - 20th cent. , and the relationship betwee tthe li- terary fairy-tale and its' "ancestor", the folktale. The first chapter considers the collections of folktales by the brothers grimm, asbjornsen and moe, hylten-cavalius et stephens, and shows the transformation of an oral folktale into a written text which means the folktales' integration into literature. The second chapter describes how the traditional model was used by h. -c. Ander- sen in his fairy-tales; the third chapter relates how the type of fairy-tale created by h. -c. Andersen was assimilated in sweden and developed by authors like w. A. Backman and z. Topelius. The forth chapter describes the most prolific period in the history of the li- terary fairy-tale in sweden (end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th cent. ) and examines some of the recurrent narrative mechanisms. Ce travail de recherches se propose de faire connaitre l'oeuvre d'erwin strittmatter. Cet auteur, qui a connu un succes considerable en allemagne de l'est, demeure grandement meconnu en france et en allemagne de l'ouest. Notre demarche a consiste a etudier l'ensemble de l'oeuvre epique de strittmatter (1912-1994) sous l'angle de son lien aux lecteurs, afin de rendre compte de cette reception contrastee. Le constat etabli au depart a partir des jugements parus dans les journaux a l'ouest et a l'est est confronte par la suite a une nouvelle lecture de l'oeuvre. L'ensemble des ecrits s'inscrit dans un + horizon d'attente ; caracteristique de la rda, ils depeignent un temps, un espace et un milieu humain propres a la vision qu'a strittmatter de ce pays. Il apparait toutefois que le lien au lecteur s'etablit essentiellement a partir des fondements de l'oeuvre, fortement orientee vers la communication et l'instauration d'une communaute. Les bases de cette communaute sont la perception de la nature, le jeu avec le narrateur (aspect autobiographique de l'oeuvre) et le patrimoine commun aux lecteurs de rda, dont strittmatter use a des fins propres. This research sets out to present the work of erwin strittmatter. This author remains little known in france and west germany in spite of his significant success in east germany. My purpose consists in studying the whole of the epic work of erwin strittmatter (1912-1994) through his relationship with readers, in order to give an account of this difference in success. A first observation established according to the judgments found in the press is then confronted with a new reading of the work. The writings are related to a + horizon of expectation ; characteristic of the german democratic republic : they describe temporal, spatial and human spheres that are specific to strittmatter's vision of this country. It appears all the same that the link with the reader is first of all established on the foundations of the work, which is strongly orientated towards communication and community. The bases of this community are the perception of nature, play with the narrator (autobiography), and a heritage which is shared by east german readers and which strittmatter uses to his own ends. This literature of a precise spatial area nevertheless has an open perspective as can be seen from the intertextual relations between the thought and the themes of related authors

Elsa Fougt (1744–1826), a woman entrepreneur, was one of the leading figures in the late eighteenth-century Swedish book trade. Her main enterprise was the printing house Kongl. Tryckeriet (the Royal Printing House), which was responsible for printing and publishing the official documents of the Swedish realm. Besides her office as Royal Printer, she also ran a publishing house, two bookshops and a type foundry, as well as being the editor of the Swedish newspaper Stockholms Weckoblad. The dissertation analyzes Fougt's different enterprises and her position in the book trade between 1780 and 1810, from the perspectives of sociology of literature and gender history. It consists of five independent articles, preceded by an introductory chapter which summarizes the articles and discusses their main findings. The first two articles explore the office of the Royal Printer during the whole eighteenth century, while the third article concerns Elsa Fougt’s position as Royal Printer. The fourth article is a study of Fougt's publishing house, and the fifth and final article focuses on her international bookshop, where, among other things, she sold clandestine books imported from the STN in Switzerland. Fougt's successful career was made possible by a number of favourable circumstances, the most important being her family background and network. Her father Peter Momma held the office of Royal Printer, and Elsa Fougt and her husband Henric inherited his position when he died. When Henric passed away in 1782, Elsa – as a widow – was legally allowed to take up the office of Royal Printer independently. The fact that Elsa Fougt was a woman does not seem to have particularly affected her role as Royal Printer. In comparison with her predecessors, her position as Royal Printer appears to have been rather strong. She was a shrewd businesswoman who successfully negotiated with the authorities for higher financial compensation. Her office was obviously of greater importance than her gender. Being both a publisher, a printer, and a bookseller, Fougt handled most of the functions of the book trade, although she distinguished between these different functions. Furthermore, rather than just being an intermediary of books, she also took part in the creation of them, for example by initiating texts and editing manuscripts. In the book trade of her time, Fougt can be seen as both a traditionalist – holding the inherited office of Royal Printer – and an innovator, representing a more modern literary system with increased specialization.

There is no real difference between the records of the biggest rural Lords and those of the Principalities in late medieval Italy. Both ones had a more or less organised chancery and produced documents in chancery form. Their archival history too is similar. The paper proposes and discusses the documentary typology of the documents made by and for the Lords. The Empire, the Holy See, the Kingdoms may have influenced the form of seigneurial litterae patentes and clausae, although there were individual nuances. The other documents, as registers and other chancery books were influenced by different regional traditions.

In common with the other works just mentioned, it explores central themes of Augustine’s thought. This chapter briefly relates City to other writings of Augustine. Abstract The name of the Genevan critic Jean Starobinski will most likely evoke masterful readings of Rousseau and Montaigne or insightful reconstructions of the world of the Enlightenment. With the possible exception of the history of melancholy, much more rarely will it be associated with the history of psychiatry, or more generally with that of the human sciences. A small number of the critic’s contributions to these fields have appeared in some of his books. Most of them, however, remain scattered, and nothing suggests that they are known as widely as they deserve. Yet Starobinski’s historical work is exemplary in its perspective on the problematic relations between psychological concepts and experiences, and between medical thought and the larger culture. He is one of those rare scholars who successfully straddle the “two cultures,” combining literary elegance with medical training, and a truly cosmopolitan erudition with an uncommon openness to the various humanistic disciplines.1 Starobinski’s oeuvre has won him a wide reputation and several prestigious awards. Whole issues of such different reviews as the Centre Pompidou’s refined Cahiers pour un temps and the more popular Magazine litteraire have been devoted to his work. These honors acknowledge his insights into the fabric of European culture from the Enlightenment to the present, as well as his outstanding literary qualities. Nevertheless, although Starobinski is a major figure of the European intellectual landscape, the reason that the writings to be presented here remain less known and influential than those of other authors included in this volume is perfectly simple. Starobinski is not primarily a historian of psychiatry; his approach and style are not typical of the profession, do not correspond to its major specialized interests, and do not follow prevailing academic currents. Nor are they likely to inaugurate methodologies, lead to crucial empirical findings, or dispense definite interpretive frameworks. The history of science, including that of psychiatry, is inherently porous; its boundaries are, and must, remain open; it is riddled with questions of definition and delimitation; most of its subject matter calls for transdisciplinary research and for extended connections with social and cultural history.
