Like other forms of art, fiction reflects the mental state and thoughts of the people in it. Life always consists of people’s lives, work activities, struggles, emotions, experiences. The descriptive theme of literature is, first and foremost, man. There is no image of man, and there is no fiction where it is not intended. Accordingly, the concept that occupies a central place in the science of literature is also the concept of the image hero. The concept of image has a wide and narrow meaning. While the concept of emblem in the broadest sense represents a landscape of life in which the thoughts and feelings of the creator are embodied, in the narrowest sense it represents the image of a human being reflected in a work of art. This article looks into the imagery in modern Uzbek literature and poetry.

Literature is divided into two parts, namely fiction and non-fiction. Literature is not only studied within the scope of school, but there are those who study it outside the school class. One of them is extracurricular activities. The literature referred to in this extracurricular activity is fictional literature such as choirs, songs and plays. The results of previous studies state that literature such as music and poetry can improve the quality of a person's language, and not only improve language, literature can also provide space for us to express. The purpose and reason for the researcher to raise and examine this title is to provide an overview of how literature is applied in the extracurricular student conversation club and to find out what problems hinder the application of literature in the extracurricular. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The objects of this research are coaches and extracurricular members of the 2022-2023 student conversation club with details of 1 coach and 3 members. The results of the study stated that the students' conversation club extracurricular activities had a good impact on improving students' language skills, especially in English.

This article reflects on the contacts and dialogues between literature and scientific thought in the works of Austrian writer Hermann Broch in the first half of the 20th century. His first novel, The Sleepwalkers [Die Schlafwandler] (1931-1932), points to certain interpretations, allusions and similarities in connection with thinkers such as Max Weber, Walter Benjamin and Hannah Arendt, which suggest the incorporation of literature to scientific and philosophical knowledge. Conversely, in his last fiction work, The Death of Virgil [Der Tod des Vergil] (1945), Broch seems to question and even to doubt the importance of literature as a way of reflecting on contemporary life. While prioritizing Broch’s early works, this article follows his trajectory as he incorporates philosophical, scientific, and religious considerations to fiction, while reflecting on the times in which he lived.

Since the Korean Society for Teaching English Literature (KSTEL) was founded in 1992, it has grown into an academic organization representing English literature-related research and education in Korea through various active academic activities, including biannual academic conferences and the publication of the Journal of Teaching English Literature (JTEL) three times a year. JTEL is a vital source of information on children’s and young adult literature and literature education by featuring analyses of poetry, fiction, drama, film, and non-fictional materials and providing ideas for teaching children’s and young adult literature in the classroom. To celebrate KSTEL’s 30th anniversary, this paper reviews and draws the trajectory of the kinds of writers, literary works, and research topics that scholars have been interested in. In this paper, I comprehensively examine and analyze the changes in goals, methodology, topics, themes, perspectives, and contents of research papers related to children’s and young adult literature criticism and literature education over the past three decades. I also make some suggestions regarding the journal’s direction for the future based on personal opinions and beliefs.

The paper aims to analyse, through multiple intertextual references, the reception of classical and me-dieval theory about relationship between veritas, fictio and poesis through Boccaccio’sand Petrarca’s examples. Starting from etymological and interpretative dissociation between the concepts of poetry and fiction, allowed by the rediscovery of Cicero’s Pro Archia, Petrarca and Boccaccio reaffirm the moral truth as center of poetic discourse, in defense of poetry against medieval accusations of defectum veritatis. A particular case of study is offered by the dialogicity of the elements of veritas and fictio in the new perspective of humanistic reworking of dream-vision’s literary theory in Boccaccio’s Amorosa Visione, and Petrarca’s Triumphi. This study highlights specifically the ways in which each author not only drew upon previous theoretical models (such as Macrobius Commentarium in Somnium Scipionis) and interacted with the genre of religious prophetic visions (like the Visio Alberici, Vision de Tondale)and the allegorism of Divine Comedy in the composition of his own oneiric texts, but also how, through their literary criticisms, they influenced the analysis of the symbols in subsequent literature.

An artistic interpretation of historical facts is quite relevant in the literature and non-fiction of a post-totalitarian society. Prose works on historical themes are valuable and interesting in that they create an illusion for readers to be present in a certain period of historical time, and it is the artistic modeling of events that makes priceless facts of history completely disappear. The historical past is an inexhaustible material that word artists have been referring to for centuries, creating the best examples of fiction. Prose texts of historical subjects are perceived by each next generation in a new way, historical events and phenomena are interpreted from different angles, the activities of famous figures of the past are widely covered. Non-fiction literature is a kind of literature that is on the verge of artistry and documentary. The main non-fiction genres are a diary, autobiography, biography, memoirs, confession, letters, etc. On the one hand, non-fiction literature claims to recognize the author’s subjective truth about him in her texts; on the other hand, only the reader can either, demonstrating full confidence in the author, call this text documentary, or admit the presence of poetry and aesthetics in the work and tilt the scales in the direction of artistry. The material for observation and research of the phenomenon of artistic modeling are works that allow us to trace the most common, in our opinion, models of correlation of historical and artistic consciousness in postmodern literature and non-fiction of a post-totalitarian society.

Do we need the modish term “eco-georgics” to help us discover the unsentimental, holistic, healing qualities in the best georgic writing of the Anthropocene? When were georgics not “eco”? Is there a “post-georgic” in some forms of contemporary literature that seem to reject husbandry altogether, such as rewilding texts? Do such categories serve any purpose to readers and critics in the Anthropocene? This essay argues that such careful distinctions do, indeed, matter more than ever now as we reconsider our sustainable options in husbandry, land-management and what sustainability might look like, as it is represented and explored in our poetry, fiction and non-fiction georgic literature in Britain at the present. One might expect contemporary georgic writing to exemplify the environmental engagement implied in the term “eco-georgic”. In fact, contemporary georgic can be environmentally radical or apparently indirect in its implications for sustainability. It remains as diverse, hybrid and composted in the past as Virgil’s original text. This essay begins by considering definitions, with reference to Virgil’s founding Latin text, begun in the third decade BCE, the Georgics. It recognises Laura Sayre’s complaint that ecocriticism has neglected georgic writing, and argues that this is certainly true for contemporary British georgic texts. Briefly, attention is drawn to five volumes of georgic poetry before the essay focuses on contemporary georgic fiction and non-fiction. The novels of Cynan Jones, Tom Bullough, Marie-Elsa Bragg and Tim Pears are discussed and contrasted with one by Melissa Harrison that might mistakenly be thought of as georgic. Three categories of non-fiction are identified and discussed with examples: instructional georgic, personal memoir and future-oriented georgic. Consideration of the latter leads to conclusions about their inevitable overlaps and a final call for a radical twenty-first century animism to embed enchantment into contemporary georgic writing

The article provides an innovative model of poetics (or isms, styles, etc.) in Czech prose in the latter half of the long 19th century. It gives an overview of seven individualized and mutually distinct poetics, including ideal, analytical, and psychological realisms, Parnassism, naturalism, impressionism, and decadence. The individual poetics do not represent periods, but exist in parallel, allowing confrontations and intersections either within the author's work or in a specific text, as in the model of Czech literature developed by Dalibor Tureček in the past decade. They are always set in the context of European literature and supported by many illustrative examples. The model is not only typological, but also assumes a diachronic perspective, which can be developed in future scholarly work on the history of Czech literature. The aim is to create a system that can potentially be applied not only to Czech fiction, but possibly also to poetry or drama, in other periods and literatures. Part One of the article concentrates on a general overview and on ideal and analytical realisms.

Abstract: This essay represents the first scholarly assessment of the complete works of the Elizabethan poet and translator Richard Linche (fl. 1596–1601). Linche was interested in classical mythology, sonnet writing, and prose translation. He was also concerned with the burning literary questions of the 1590s and early seventeenth century. This article analyzes Linche’s sonnet sequence Diella (1596) and his love poem The Love of Dom Diego and Gynevra (1596), highlighting Linche’s use of ancient mythology as an ideal vehicle for exploring personal passion in contemporary poetry. It then turns to Linche’s English translation of the Italian mythographer Vincenzo Cartari, The Fountaine of Ancient Fiction (1599) , to illustrate how Linche deals with mythology as an inspiration for literature. Linche identifies myth as an appealing source for contemporary writing while displaying discomfort with some of its sexual content. Finally, this article discusses Linche’s An Historical Treatise of the Travels of Noah into Europe (1601), placing the work in the larger picture of his literary career and suggesting that it was a euhemeristic response to his earlier explorations of myth. In contrast to Linche’s earlier works, The Travels offers a de-personalized and desexualized approach to myth. By providing the first detailed critical assessment of Richard Linche’s oeuvre, this essay reveals an Elizabethan writer who was interested in what inspires fiction, particularly in the complicated moral issues surrounding the sensuality of classical mythology and the role of eroticism in contemporary poetry.

“Literature is the art of discovering something extraordinary about ordinary people and saying with ordinary words something extraordinary.” says -Boris Pasternak. Several literary works engage readers deeply by the narratives they tell or the messages they convey. Readers are consistently motivated by biographies of notable people as well as true tales of bravery, selflessness, and other admirable traits. Such books act as both a bible of values and a window into the life of notable people for the general public. The main types of literature: Drama, Fable, Autobiography, Biography, Poetry, Prose, Science Fiction, and Journalistic Literature. Poetry is a great motivator when we try to learn it. It is rich in tradition, culture and language and gives a great opportunity to learn a language. The main function of poetry is to interpret life. There are poets who have pictured death as both a friend and an enemy. Some claim that passing away can provide relief from troubles and anguish, while others claim that it is cruel and robs a person of the fun and pleasure the world has to offer. In this paper, an attempt has been made to present Christina Rossetti’s longingness to be remembered even after death that separates her from her lover in the poem “Remember”.

This study determined the effectiveness of the Digital Storytelling (DST) in teaching literature to grade 11 students of Cantapoy National High School, Malimono, Surigao del Norte. Specifically, the level of literary competence of students during the pre-test and posttest in terms of literary comprehension and literary appreciation of three (3) different genres was assessed to determine the educational value of DST. Furthermore, it also determined the significant difference of students’ literary competence between the pretest and posttest and the significant difference in the mean gains of students’ literary competence among three (3) genres - poetry, fiction, and drama. A quasi-experimental research design in One-Shot mode was used in this study. The study utilized a researcher-made questionnaire and an adopted evaluation rubric in gathering the data. The findings of the study revealed that the literary competence of the students raised from “Low” to “High” after the intervention was implemented. DST was rated “Valuable”. Based on the general results, considering the variation of genres, the literary competence of the students of all genres significantly differs between the pre-test and the post-test, and there exists no significant difference in the mean gains of students’ literary competence in three genres. Concluded that the improvement in students’ literary competence stemmed from the integration of digital storytelling; the felt educational value of digital story telling becomes manifest and tangible through the production of students’ literary output; Poetry needs deeper analysis; and across genres, the students’ literary competence using digital storytelling manifest same evidence of improvement.

Serial killers have been a popular topic in literature for centuries, appearing in works of fiction, non-fiction, and even poetry. In literature, serial killers often represent the dark side of human nature, and their stories often explore the depths of depravity and the psychological motivations behind their heinous acts. Examples of serial killers can be found throughout history and mythology. With all that the public’s attention is usually focused on the serial murders of the latest decades, with the historical cases still generally remaining in the obscure. The reason for that lack of publicity is that serial killers in antiquity are difficult to identify, because the concept of serial killing is a relatively modern one. One of the pleasant exceptions is a book by Debbie Felton “Monsters and Monarchs: Serial Killers in Classical Myths and History” published by University of Texas Press, 2021, 235 pp., ISBN: 978-1-4773-2357-1 (paperback edition). The emerging poetry of Xavier Guillén represents an interesting case in the perpetuation of a poetic school that, particularly at an institutional level, has generally been hegemonic in the Spanish literary field from the eighties to nowadays. This article attempts a brief stylistic analysis of the texts from his second book, Amo de casa (2021), revealing his reproduction of the main formal characteristics and his reformulation of the aesthetic-ideological postulates of the tradition of the so called poetry of experience in the Spanish literary field. It particularly emphasizes what Xavier Guillén’s literary work has both of continuity and individuation against that trend. To achieve that, the reader is provided with an introductory presentation about the origins of this school, as well as its main ideas about literary creation: model of poem, method of writing by taking emotional distance, the objectification of the poetic subject, and its concept of poetry as a genre of fiction. Among other things, this paper discusses the internal structure of poetry books, the issue of literature as a professional activity (the idealistic versus the mundane notions of poetry), and the prominence of familial relationships in the second book of this –now not so young– emerging poet.

Diasporic literature is a pivotal term in literature that includes the literary works of the authors who are the outsiders for their native country but their work is deeply rooted in homeland by reflecting native culture, background, displacement and so on. Indian women’s literary work is at the forefront of diasporic literature. The advent of Indian women novelists on the literary horizon is an important development in the Indian English literature. These women writers have also contributed to other genres, such as drama, poetry and short stories, not only in English but also in regional languages like Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Kannada and so on. Some modern women writers flourish their writing in the form of fables as a literary genre in an impressive way to focus on the specific themes. In last two decades, Indian women’s writing in English is blossomed, both published in India and abroad. The present paper is the review of diasporic consciousness in select works of contemporary Indian women novelists. It focuses on the attempt to highlight the quest for identity of those women who played a crucial role in defining themselves through their literary work in diasporic background.

Creative online communities have appeared, centred on reading and writing poetry, prose, flash fiction, short stories, as well as fan fiction. We can see how the relationship between readers and writers have become all the more interactive through the online environment. Previously, we were talking about the relationship of communication between writers and readers, which was recognized by the reader-response approach to any text, as it was being interpreted by the readers function of their background and function of what they could make out of the allusions put before them by the writer. Direct communication among writers and readers regarding various new writers’ fresh book publications and launchings can take place on online social media. Nowadays, everyone has access to the online medium, and can start pursuing various activities with people from all over the world. This is what has happened in the case of the haiku communities, poetry writing sites such as, in Romania, agonia.ro, Wattpad, which allows young writers to imagine and share their novels, as well as their personal concerns.

This article describes the uses of literature in The Labor Advocate: A Weekly Labor Reform Newspaper (Toronto, 1890-91). As editor of the Advocate, Thomas Phillips Thompson aimed to increase awareness of the means and consequences of industrial capitalism, and thus enhance the possibility of social justice for the working class. He did so in a mixed format periodical that included poetry, short fiction, and serialized novels as well as editorials, biographies, obituaries, reports, letters, and columns. Over forty-four issues, Thompson experimented with literary expression to attract readers and foster the democratic reform of social organization. Analysis of the Advocate points to the importance of communication strategies in both the early history of the Canadian labour press and the longer history of labour in transnational contexts.

That history may be read as literature is an aesthetic judgment, which does not deflect from the essential difference between the two modes. To paraphrase Gibbon, who above all in this context knew what he was talking about, “the end of history is truth … the end of poetry is pleasure”. History, by definition, must fail to attain its ultimate goal of recreating the past “exactly as it happened”: that such is the case, whether because of the fallibility of the human intellect, or the difficulty (but not impossibility) of constructing history in a non-linear mode, or even – that stock excuse of historians – the doubtful, maybe putatively “fictional” quality of “the sources” – does not mean, as is from time to time suggested, that the attempt should not be made, or that history and fiction are indistinguishable. Intent, in this context, is all, nor should one forget that earlier proponents of fictionalised history may on occasion prove to be somewhat uncomfortable intellectual bedfellows.

The present paper “The Phenomenon of Erotic Fiction in Latvian and World Literature” is devoted to the fiction genre acquiring immense popularity in Western literature while having attracted only fragmentary attention in Latvian literary scholarship, namely the erotic fiction, which is currently among those genres of literature most widely read among Latvian readers and therefore titled as somewhat phenomenal. The first part of the paper provides insight into the history of the erotic world literature and the most common division of the genre into the three basic categories; this part also provides a short overview of the erotic aspects in the Latvian original fiction during the 20th century. It has been possible to decide that the erotic prose has had only a limited representation in Latvian literature, mainly due to historical and socio-political factors, because the common tendency was to euphemise the said aspects, which were often met with an open reproach of the more Puritan part of the society. Erotic aspects in poetry and prose somewhat flourished during the epoch of Decadence (the first decade of the 20th century) and after that, only during the turn of the 20th/21st centuries when the prohibitions invoked by the Soviet censorship were lifted. Nevertheless, even during these periods, the more free approach resulted in only a few prose works of this kind or else episodes in works of other genres. The conclusive part of the paper is devoted to four novels by currently the most popular author of erotic romance in Latvian literature, Karīna Račko, inviting at the same time the discussion about the reasons for the popularity of these novels which might proceed from their common structural characteristics. It is possible to observe that the novel’s structures are notably similar to the basic plotlines of fairy-tales that the readers recognise on an archetypal level. Consequently, this makes it possible to view these novels as a sort of fairy-tales for modern grown-ups whose attraction is multiplied by the fact that the texts include specific aspects of visualisation that make it possible for the readers to identify closely with the characters.

In John Campton's World War I Paris, where the fashionable portrait painter wields his paintings in a behind the lines battle to gain, as he says, “possession” of his grown son, Wharton probes the sexual politics underlying the development of modernist aesthetics by writing a new kind of war novel. The novel invokes and then questions a central trope of the fiction and poetry that, until recently, has been identified as The Literature of the Great War.

Literature as representation has not only been able to capture the people’s imagination of a given epoch but has in itself constituted a historical account that goes deeper than mere representation of historical fact. As such, literature is a good tool for historical representation and examination, which complements historical records. Whereas history deals with hard historical facts, literature deals with fictionalised history inspired by historical events or imagination but in either case shaped by the society it represents. Thus, one can read a historical novel as both a fictional and factual representation of the historical fact. In this regard, the paper argues that the intersection between literature and history is inevitable because fiction uses the creative industry to represent historical events with both history and literature being products of society. Using a historical approach, this paper uses Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Hussein’s Kinjeketile and Rubadili’s “Stanley Meets Mutesa,” which represents the three key genres—novel, drama and poetry, respectively, to interrogate how history and literature are connected. Achebe’s Things Fall Apart depicts the historical encounter during the advent of colonialism. Hussein’s Kinjeketile portrays the struggle between the colonised and the coloniser in the fictionalised Tanganyika. Rubadili’s “Stanley Meets Mutesa” depicts a cruel encounter between the colonised and the coloniser with the colonised seemingly blind to the machinations of the coloniser. The three literary texts are used to illustrate the historical connection between history and literature.

The authors of this article focus on poetics of “triptych about the Black death”, which is included in the play “Summer’s Last Will and Testament” (1592) written by the Elizabethan writer Thomas Nashe. As this writer is well-known to modern literary scholars mostly as a talented satirist, the author of a novel and numerous pamphlets, the attention to his poetic heritage is nowadays surprisingly relevant from the view point of their thematic vector and from the viewpoint of the author’s contribution into the development of the Elizabethan poetic tradition. The three poems about the London plague of 1592-1594 forced T. Nashe to change both his lifestyle and concepts of his fiction. Faced with inevitable illness and death, the writer demonstrated his imagination about plague in poems that enrich the fictional structure of drama. Being united by the ideas of the life transience and the fear of death, the author’s psycho-emotional state and his contemporaries’ universal vision of the medical disaster are manifested in different ways. In this article, there is also an attempt to find out the ideological and fictional specificity of the poems and their correlation with the structural and compositional organization of the play, as well as to define so-called theatricality as an artistic feature of drama. Some unfamiliar facts from the author’s life and socio-cultural context are also placed in the given article. Having analyzed the poems, the authors of the research came to conclusion that their uniqueness lies in the following: in his first drama Nashe represented his first poems, moreover, for the first time in the Late Renaissance literature, they were devoted to the Black death. This artistic achievement differs Th. Nashe from contemporary men-of-letter. Thanks to these poems, Nashe can be henceworth considered not only a great satirist, but also as a talented poet of the Elizabethan age.

Abstract From a cultural fad of Confederate flags to a spate of schools named after Confederate generals, the 1954 Brown v. Board decision revived the memory of the US Civil War. In their collective effort of “massive resistance,” white southerners considered themselves carrying on the legacy of their Confederate ancestors, rebelling against the federal government and insisting upon states’ rights. In response to this revival, many mid-century writers revised Civil War memory. Ralph Ellison, for example, considered the Brown decision as yet another battle in an ongoing Civil War. The works of Black writers such as James Baldwin, Langston Hughes, Pauli Murray, and Margaret Walker, as well as white writers such as Robert Lowell, Carson McCullers, Flannery O’Connor, and Robert Penn Warren, revise Lost Cause cultural narratives as they reconstruct four sites of Civil War memory: monuments, schools, textbooks, and grandparents. Writers in the twenty-first century have extended the interest in Civil War memory, from the essays of Ta-Nehisi Coates to the plays of Suzan-Lori Parks, to the fiction of George Saunders to the poetry of Natasha Trethewey and Kevin Young. The return of Civil War memory in twenty-first-century literature anticipates and represents the resurgence of civil rights protest against ongoing, state-sanctioned racial violence.

The article focuses on the study of one of the identifiers of regional literature – the use of local language. The goal of the article is to establish and interpret the nuances and meaning of the use of the Livonian dialect in the poetry of two popular authors of modern Latvian children’s literature – Uldis Auseklis (1941) and Arnolds Auziņš (1931). The analysis of literary texts is based on the work (opinions on idioms, dialects and the use of their features in fiction) of several researchers of regional culture – Keith David Malcolm Snell, Anna Mlekodaj –, and Latvian scholars – Kārlis Mīlenbahs, Marta Rudzīte, Ieva Ozola, Alberts Sarkanis, Dace Strelēvica-Ošiņa and others. The examples of Auseklis’s and Auziņš’s poetry analyzed in the study reveal that in modern Latvian children’s literature, specificially in poetry, dialects are one of the sources of language enrichment and that poets use them consciously and skillfully. Both poets demonstrate a convincing sense of the peculiarities of the Livonian dialect, however, the use of the dialect is influenced by the knowledge of the authors: if the dialect is the language of the author’s native region, then the texts written in it are more numerous and reveal the distinctiveness of the dialect in a more nuanced way. The lexicon characteristic of Livonian dialect – regional words, ethnographic names, also individual expressions, various phonetic peculiarities (loss of sounds, insertions, rearrangements, etc.) and word forms different from the literary language (use of the masculine gender instead of the feminine gender, verb form invariance regardless of person and number, etc.) – is used in modern Latvian children’s poetry most often. In the poems by Auziņš and Auseklis, the use of dialect is dominated by a respectful attitude. Humour in the analyzed texts does not mock the dialect or its speakers, the analyzed texts demonstrate the recognition that the regional language can be perceived as an important part of the national language, not as its opposition. The study shows that the use of the regional language in modern Latvian children's books simultaneously preserves the peculiarities of the dialect and gives them a new life because the unusual expressiveness makes them attractive to the reader and can promote the use of the dialect. Also, the texts written in such idioms can become an important source for the research of linguists, literature and culture scholars, and educational scientists.

Following his Columbia Anthology of Traditional Chinese Literature (1994) and the Shorter Columbia Anthology of Traditional Chinese Literature (2000), the Columbia History of Chinese Literature intends to complement these two widely used readers. Edited by Victor H. Mair, the 55 chapters of this single-volume history of Chinese literature are chronologically arranged with thematic chapters interspersed. Indeed, a closer look at the chapters reveals that the book at hand follows the traditional dictum of wen shi zhe bu fenjia, i.e. that literature, history and philosophy should not be separated but regarded as one field of studies. Hence the scope of this history goes far beyond the scope of what is traditionally subsumed under the heading of literature. In addition to the topics (all genres and periods of poetry, prose, fiction, and drama) that one expects in a book of this sort, wit and humour, proverbs and rhetoric, historical and philosophical writings, classical exegesis, literary theory and criticism, traditional fiction commentary, as well as popular culture, the impact of religion upon literature, the role of women, and the relationship with non-Chinese languages and peoples (ethnic minorities, Korea, Japan, Vietnam) feature as topics of individual chapters. Most of the chapters are written by leading specialists in those areas and are highly informative as well as concisely presented. Moreover, a number of chapters are thought-provoking enough to inspire questions that may lead towards a more focused research on hitherto neglected or less well-documented topics. In this sense, The Columbia History of Chinese Literature may also be perceived as a potential major impetus for further developments in the study of pre-modern and modern Chinese literature and related fields. Since the volume aims at bringing the riches of China's literary tradition into focus for a general readership, the majority of chapters can probably be best described as outlines of specific developments that should encourage readers to consult more specialized publications.

The article dedicated to the works of the Lithuanian literature written in the second half of the 20th century depicting the writer Žemaitė (pen name of Julija Beniuševičiūtė-Žymantienė, 1845–1921). This writer was not rejected by the Soviet authorities because of her realistic outline and her democratic political views, the social criticism expressed in her work towards greed, selfishness and clericalism. Lithuanian writers dedicated to her their poetry, fiction, and drama works. However, Soviet writers were also impressed by Žemaitė’s personality traits, which mentioned less frequently in public: independence, perseverance, wit, the courage to stand out from her surroundings and to disregard the societal norms that stifled older women in traditional society. The article analyses the features of Žemaitė’s personality in works of Lithuanian literature created by poets Salomėja Nėris, Judita Vaičiūnaitė, and others. The author reveals how different aspects of Žemaitė’s work and personality were emphasised depending on the time of writing. This change partly reflects the shift of literature from socialist realism to more modern literature. Among the works of prose, the author singles out Bitė Vilimaitė’s cycle of short stories “Apsakymai apie Žemaitę” (Short Stories about Žemaitė) from her collection Papartynų saulė (Fernery Sun, 2002). The stories reveal both the character of Žemaitė, her environment and people close to her, and the most important features of Vilimaitė’s own work: attention to a woman’s fate, subtle psychological insight, attention to detail, and a specific model of a short novella. Since the protagonists of the cycle are usually real people, Vilimaitė’s talent for using documentary material and combining it with fiction is also evident here. The article concludes that Soviet-era authors portraying Žemaitė’s character raised aspects relevant to the time of writing, such as the promotion of national culture, problems of women’s emancipation and, also the fact that for female writers, Žemaitė was a role model.

AbstractEthical thought typically aims to provide a general account of the good. This essay explores a form of localized ethical attention through British Romantic writing that eschews that aspiration, privileging individual cases in all their detail and particularity. This form, which I term “microethics,” is small in two senses, permitting extremely close observation of individual cases and limiting itself to equally small conclusions. It is most recognizable in poetry but recurs across fiction, drama, and philosophical prose. Considering such thinking allows us to assess and extend recent arguments for the value of Romanticism's small and marginal forms. While Romantic microethics develops in opposition to emerging utilitarian thought and the politically repressive conditions of the 1790s, it anticipates a range of later forms, from Adorno's ethical fragments to deconstruction to anthropological method. At once literary and philosophical, it binds both writing and reading practices to acts of singular attention.

The article highlights a complex of problems addressed by linguopoetics, the science that concerns itself with the language of fiction and poetry. Linguopoetis as the study of imagery, its rules and means aims at revealing the potential power of tropes in literary texts; more importantly, it provides understanding of the principles that govern text organization in terms of the philosophy of knowledge, the unity of language and thought, the linguistic picture of the world. The system of ideas and images presented in literary discourse requires a holistic approach rather than the discussion of separate text fragments, i.e. the analysis of ‘vertical context’. Comprehension of metaphoricity presupposes generalizations at the level of the semantic structure of the whole text with its colloquialisms and metaphorical imagery, transformations of figurative and non-figurative meanings, stylistically neutral and marked elements, connotative layers and additional new meanings. A distinctive feature of modern literary texts is deviations from codified literary norms; such divergences create ‘freshness’, originality of expression; they create unique images providing deep psychological insight and eloquence. The study of modern literary discourse involves investigation into the general characteristics of national idiolect, its specificity, authors’ ideostylistic features. The analysis of individual styles of writing, on the material of modernist prose and poetry in particular, makes it possible to establish current literary trends and innovative tendencies in modern Ukrainian literature.

The goal of this research is to determine how the Qazaq prose language emerged early in the 20th century, and what characteristics of its evolution occurred. In the years of 1920 to 1930 the prose genres such as stories and novels developed quickly. These works incorporated a great deal of folklore in addition to covering a wide range of subjects. Prose language formation and evolution are closely related to other facets of narrative. Because analyzing the degree of development on fictional elements such as the language of characters, the author, portrait, landscape, and descriptive elements is intended to detect the formation of the prose language in general, we concentrate on the traits of their development and factors indicating the formation of the language. The outcomes of the investigation revealed that the Qazaq prose literature of the time provided new meanings to local words and acted as a main source for their growth. Grammar and fiction language were greatly influenced by the language of prose works found in textbooks, newspapers, journals, and various folk literary works. The argument is that prose has its roots in the shared heritage and that historical and genealogical narratives have a certain prose style. Prose works' language was the main factor that greatly enhanced the vocabulary and grammatical features of literary language which from short stories to novels developed simultaneously in all genres. This study took a comprehensive approach, taking into account the aspects of novels and short stories, their relationship to styles, poetry passages, elements of colloquial language, new phenomena, oral literature, fairy tales, and legendary occurrences.

The article depicts the main processes of literary urbanism in the 1960s in the Bulgarian prose, which witness the permeability of the socialist realist canon and the expansion of its thematic and structural boundaries. Three new models of negatively connoted city space that came into being in the context of the “Thaw” are outlined. The differences between the presented models and the Soviet urbanism of the 1960s, which often presents city as a territory of poetry, trust and connection with the revolutionary past, are taken into account. The present article traces the presence of the topos of the “sinful city” in Pavel Vezhinov’s Smell of Almonds, Bogomil Rainov’s Roads to Nowhere and Vassil Popov’s The Time of the Hero. The author reconstructs the genesis of the given topos in the tradition of Bulgarian urban literary fiction from the 1920s to the 1940s and analyzes the influence of mass literature. A group of semantic features typical for the poetics of this topos in the considered works is presented, such as: — destruction and fragmentation; — incompleteness and deformation of the interior; — semiotization of sounds and aromas; — provincialism and cosmopolitanism. The confrontation of the topos with the basic postulates of the socialist realism as well as the productivity of the given model in the Bulgarian literary fiction of the 1970s is outlined.

Zozulia, Dmytro. "Digital poetics of contemporary Ukrainian literature: specifics of the QR code". Synopsis: Text Context Media 29, nr 4 (2023): 248–55. http://dx.doi.org/10.28925/2311-259x.2023.4.2.

In recent years, due to the constant need for quick access to virtual reality, the QR code has become one of the most important digital technologies. Today, it is actively used in various spheres of human activity, for example, the distribution of advertising or the creation of artistic works, including fiction books by Ukrainian authors. As a result, we can observe changes in the structure of classical literary genres and in the text itself. Thus, the relevance of the study lies in the need to comprehend the QR code as a new phenomenon in contemporary Ukrainian literature in the context of digimodernist poetics. This study aims to analyze the possibilities of using QR codes in contemporary Ukrainian literature and determine what materials they are used to access in prose and poetry. The object of the study is the collection of poems “Artery” by Dmytro Lazutkin, the novels “Radio Night” by Yuri Andrukhovych, “Footprints on the Road” by Valerii Markus (Ananiev), and “Mozart 2.0” by Dorje Batuu. The subject of the study is QR codes placed in these works. The study uses comparative, intermedial, and structuralist methods of analysis. The results of the study show that the validity of using a QR code depends on its location in the printed text, as well as on what information can be obtained by scanning it. A QR code can be printed on the front cover of a book (“Mozart 2.0” by D. Batuu), on the back cover of a book (“Radio Night” by Yu. Andrukhovych) or inside the book next to the text fragment to which it refers (“Mozart 2.0” by D. Batuu), on a page with an illustration next to a poem (“Artery” by D. Lazutkin), or as a link at the bottom of the page (“Footprints on the Road” by V. Markus). Usually, the information encoded in a QR code contains a link to a page on the Internet with additional visual, audio, or textual materials posted on it. The novelty of the research results lies in the identification of the main functions of additional materials that can be accessed after scanning a QR code in a literary work: interactive, illustrative, informative and plot-forming. Further research prospects may be related, in particular, to the analysis of the QR code as a new phenomenon in printed dramatic works, since this article has considered only prose and poetry.

Lee Juhong(1906-1987) was a writer, educator, and artist, born in Hapcheon, Gyeongsangnam-do, and worked in Busan. This paper is a study of his calligraphy, poetry, and painting. He experienced various hardships during his life of 80 years, including Japanese rule and the Korean War. Therefore, he expressed human agony and the fundamental essence of his difficult life through various genres of art, including literature. He led students to culture and art during his entire life as a professor of the Department of Korean Language and Literature at the National Fisheries University of Busan, integrated by Pukyong National University in Busan afterward. In addition, he was a comprehensive artist who engaged in artistic activities in a variety of genres, including poetry, novels, essays, plays, and criticism, as well as children's poems, fairy tales, juvenile fiction, calligraphy and painting, folk paintings, comics, book designing and binding, and theater directing. He also wrote collections of literary works and translations that amount to about 300 volumes. I analyzed and examined Hyangpa Lee Juhong’s calligraphy and painting by classifying them into literary communication aesthetics of calligraphy and painting and authentic East Asian aesthetics of calligraphy. The simple beauty, humorous beauty, and natural beauty abstracted from the literary communication aesthetics of calligraphy and painting help the aesthetic emotions organically linked in Hyangpa’s poetry, painting, and calligraphy to communicate through the integrated empathy of creation and appreciation. Therefore, I confirmed that simple, humorous, and nature-friendly works become communication aesthetics that heals complex minds. I summarized the authentic East Asian aesthetics of calligraphy into five beauties.: The first is the simple and gentle beauty that looks smiling. The second is the beauty that to have and to lack generate each other, and the third is the beauty that expresses a neat yet majestic aura with flowing strokes. The next is the beauty that is plain but not sick of, and the last is the magnanimous beauty while remaining faithful to nature without restraint. He used diverse genres of literature and various fields of art. He attempted many experimental things in calligraphy, so we could evaluate that he created a new style and method of calligraphy. In addition, the humanistic, literary, and aesthetic sentiments accompanying Confucius's humanism and Zhuangzi's vital freedom at the bottom of Hyangpa art formed his view of literature, art, and life. Thus, they elaborately emerged in Hyangpa’s calligraphy and painting.

In this article the author examines the features of the poetry of the classic of contemporary Mongolian poetry of the 20th century D. Natsagdorzh. The main purpose of this article is to point out the innovations in the poet’s work. The author tried to characterize his poetry on the basis of an analysis of some poems that will allow to determine such moments of his poetic work as the composition of the basic concepts of rhythm, verse and prosody, which are the main units of the study of poetic works. In the works of D. Natsagdorzh, especially in his poems, there are no fixed ideas, traditional writing and stylistic influence of ancient written works, which had little impact on the literature of the beginning of the revolution time. It can be seen that he wrote his poems in the literary language, style and image of the modern Mongolian language, and this is very different from the written style, way of thinking and the influence of the style of the classical and oral Mongolian language of current writers and poets. There are practically no scholars who would study D. Natsagdorzh’s poems in the form of speech, there are few researchers who would determine whether this is a work or not. Dialogue is an important part of the system of fiction and is of great importance in solving new problems arising in the course of the narrative, increasing the intensity of the conflict, softening, uniting, correctly identifying the evolution of character, disclosing the mood and characteristics of the character’s behavior. Another key feature of the poet’s skill is that he uses dialogue primarily in the poem, expressing the general features of the composition in the verse in a unique way and creates sensual poems associated with certain events.
