In this dissertation it is argued that the concept of literary intelligence as used and developed by Frank Raymond Leavis and other members of his Scrutiny circle is a viable theoretical and educational notion and is long due a reappraisal. Their thesis that reading quality texts intelligently assists our personal and moral development is taken up and subjected to philosophical analysis. It is also argued that a theory of intellectual virtue is best suited for such a reappraisal. Literary intelligence is then found to be best interpreted as a form of Aristotelian practical intelligence. This interpretation allows us to theorize the moral salience of literary experiences. This theorization is achieved through an in-depth analysis of relevant articles written by Leavis, Harding and Bantock, assorted writings on the relationship between life and art as envisaged by a number of thinkers, as well as a sustained analysis of the theory of intellectual virtue. In particular, recourse is taken to the theory of intellectual virtue as drafted by American philosopher Linda Trinkaus Zagzebski. Consequently, a number of educational implications of the above theories are identified and commented upon. Also, it is shown that the above-mentioned theoretical insights fit in well with the consistent findings of research into reading. Finally it is argued that if the capacity to read well is best approached as a moral trait, then reading education cannot be legitimately conceptualized as one ‗competence‘ among others. On the contrary: reading education ought to form the moral kernel of the curriculum. A sustained and socially sanctioned emphasis on the fostering of reading and the creation of a culture of literacy will widely expand the social, cultural and moral horizons of children and adults alike

I began this research by identifying that poetry was sometimes a challenging subject for primary school teachers to teach. With the implementation of the National Literacy Strategy (NLS) (DfEE, 1998) came extensive coverage of poetry, and I argued the necessity for independent research to investigate how teachers, without specialist training in English, interpreted the NLS for poetry sessions, and how pupils responded. My research aim was to provide an independent and historical insight into the literary experiences of two case study groups, each consisting of a teacher and six pupils in Year Six, and the impact of the recently implemented NLS. To realise this aim I used qualitative methods of data collection: observation to examine the role of poetry in the classroom; and interview, to gain a phenomenological perspective of the relationship between poetry and the research participants. Having carried out the research process it emerged that there were three interrelated areas, which had had significant impact on the literary environment that children engaged in over the Y6 school year. These were: the NLS; the Standard Assessment Tasks (SATs); and National Curriculum (NC) English Level Descriptions attributed to students. Though poetry in the NLS was present across each term, the perceived pressure of attaining certain Level Descriptions in SATs meant that poetry was omitted so that more time could be spent on refining other literary skills. When poetry was taught key issues arose in relation to the way in which each teacher interpreted the NLS. These were: lack of subject knowledge; little discussion of the meaning of the text; and, minimal reference to children's experiences of poetry outside of the classroom. It was also noted that children engaged in ludic word play under certain conditions, and that this was generated in response to interaction with the poem, and each other. I conclude by considering the implications of a socio-constructivist approach to poetry, which I suggest works with children's predisposition for playing with language and learning and engaging with others. This study also highlights that language play in the classroom is relatively unresearched, while establishing a link between ludic play, reader-response theory and the teaching and learning theory of socio-constructivism.

This dissertation considers Philip K. Dick’s dystopian vision by discussing the dystopian elements that are present in three of his novels – Martian Time-Slip, The Penultimate Truth, and A Scanner Darkly. Dick is universally regarded as a science fiction writer, with critics giving little or no attention to the realist themes, which include dystopian elements, in his work. Through close readings of three novels, this study identifies and analyses Dick’s use of the elements typical of dystopian novels: defamiliarization, oppression, and dehumanization. Dick’s historical context – predominantly the social, political, and economic issues prevalent in 1960s California – is examined, to show his critique of contemporary society through the use of dystopian elements. A comparison is made between Dick’s work and the classical dystopian novels We by Yevgeni Zamyatin, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell. This comparison clearly shows that Dick’s novels may be considered more realist than science fictional, in that they use the elements typical of classical dystopian writing. In fact, Dick goes further than Zamyatin, Orwell, and Huxley because he presents an imminent dismal future, one that is dominated by capitalism. Rather than trying to overthrow this system or seeking escape, which he implies are impossible, Dick suggests that it is better to resist the oppressive and dehumanizing effects of capitalism by attempting to somehow preserve one’s humanity and liberty.

Lucan was one of the most widely read and studied classical authors during the Middle Ages, a reference point for teaching, historiography and literature. The essay attempts to outline Giovanni Boccaccio’s profile as a reader of Pharsalia in the different ages of his literary production and in his critical judgment, placing him in the context of fourteenth-century reception. The different ways of reading Lucan’s masterpiece, from the almost literal imitation of some scenes in the Filocolo, to the punctual references to situations, images and characters in the works of maturity, testifies the inexhaustible attention of Boccaccio towards the poet of «plus quam civilia bella».

This article examines the relationship between language, space, and movement in Ann Quin’s novel ‚Passages‘ (1969) from an affect-oriented theoretical perspective. After a brief overview of the relevant theoretical background, it analyses the literary techniques Quin uses to explore affective interrelations that defy common strategies of literary representation. By drawing attention to Quin’s engagement with the writings of Virginia Woolf, the article also reveals the underestimated importance of Woolf as a point of reference for understanding Quin’s experimental prose.

AbstractThe insistence to the value judgment is both an innate mission of Marxist literary criticism and a necessity for the social and cultural construction of contemporary China and the world. The reconstruction of value judgment is theoretically based on the social ideals of Marx and Engels on full emancipation of human beings, and the value judgment in the Chinese form is designed from three basic dimensions, namely the human, social, and aesthetic dimensions. The human dimension emphasizes that the critics should regard the respect for human life, the maintenance of human dignity, and the pursuit of justice as their bottom line. The relativity and the paradox of literary values are explored respectively from historical and practical perspectives. The construction of a dominant as well as compatible system of value judgment provides a new value judgment reference for contemporary Chinese literary criticism and the global literary world.

Before considering the work being done on Persian manuscripts and the places where they are kept, attention should first be focused upon two related topics. First, the place where the manuscripts were written. By looking at colophons where the place of origin is indicated, and in some cases, by assessing the style of the calligraphy, we discover that over a period of six or seven centuries, Persian manuscripts were written in all the lands where people either spoke Persian or were familiar With Persian literature. There are numerous Persian manuscripts which have been written in Arabic- speaking lands such as Syria, Iraq, and Egypt, and the European dominions of the Ottoman Empire, a number of which still remain in these countries. Moreover, the existence of Persian manuscripts in public libraries and private collections in India, Pakistan, and Turkey is an indication of the prevalence of the Persian language at the courts and at literary gatherings in those lands. The style of the calligraphy and illumination of these manuscripts was specific to these various regions, and one can distinguish them at a glance.

The writers’ village of Komarovo holds a significant place in poetry series of Joseph Brodsky and Victor Sosnora. Komarovo represents an integral part of the literary myth of Saint Petersburg’s role as a “cultural capital city” of Russia. Brodsky’s “Kellomäki” poem tells a story of an artistic resurrection of love with by the will of memory. Victor Sosnora’s “Anno Iva” poetry series contains a reference to Anna Akhmatova. Akhmatova was and remains an idiomatic “genius of the place”, “genius loci” of Komarovo village and the city of Saint Petersburg. Depending on the level of poetical comprehension, literary semantics of the area changes.

In literary analyses, the literary present tense is used to discuss certain events that take place in literary works. In other words, in literary analyses, writers sometimes use the present tense in reference to works of literature written in the past. Literature students for whom English is a second language can find it daunting to grasp the concept of using the simple present to discuss past events. Apart from this confusion, undergraduate students of English literature can face difficulty in distinguishing between the creative and academic writing styles, especially as they are exposed to both styles of writing and are expected to write academically about creative writing. Against this backdrop, this study analyzed errors related to the use of present tense that occurred in academic writing samples of 21 undergraduate students studying English literature at a Sri Lankan non state higher education institute. The causes of these errors too were determined. The error analysis was conducted according to the five steps suggested by S. Pit Corder (1967). A total of 32 present tense-related errors were identified. Of them, 12 were instances of when the literary present tense was not used where necessary. The remaining 20 errors were examples of students’ usage of the simple present tense instead of the simple past. These two types of errors indicate that the students lack knowledge and/ or practice in determining when (and when not) to use the literary present tense in their literary analyses. Furthermore, a reporting sentence which could be written in either the simple present or simple past tense was identified; such reporting sentences can be construed as increasing the difficulty that students would face in the selection of tenses. Therefore, it can be concluded that literature undergraduates should be introduced to the concept of the literary present tense, which is not a term that is frequently discussed in books written about the pedagogy of academic writing, according to the researcher’s knowledge.

The purpose of the article is to present, with reference to a number of his stories and plays, the part played by music in Chekhov's works, which contain many borrowings from folk songs, Russian romances and classical music. The heroes of his works sing arias from operas, playing and singing the works of Russian and foreign composers. There are many extracts from the works of Tchaikovsky, with whom the writer enjoyed a relationship marked by mutual respect and friendship. Music in Chekhov's literary works embraces the whole of human life, covering a wide variety of emotions and situa-tions described in many of the writer's works, which also include stories with purely musical titles. En el pensamiento urbanístico francés del s. XX se aprecia esa evolución. Con la particularidad de que en la cultura de ese país la campiña no solo representa un entorno de producción agraria o una referencia artístico-literaria constante, sino también una seña de identidad histórica, pues la distribución de la propiedad agraria actual se remonta al legado de la Revolución. El trabajo estudia esa evolución a tenor de las directrices emanadas para abordar las intervenciones en la aglomeración urbana de Lyon, un área con una larga historia de planeamiento, a menudo señalada como ejemplar. In Europe, concerns regarding urban planning have evolved: rural areas are now recognized as a seat of value or principles and structures that urban culture wishes to see preserved. This change is reflected in 20th century french urban planning. In France, countryside represents not only an environment of agricultural production or a recurrent artistic and literary reference, but also a sign of historical identity, as the distribution of the current landownership dates back to the legacy of the Revolution. This paper examines these developments in accordance with planning guidelines issued to tackle operations in the urban agglomeration of Lyon, often viewed as exemplary.

The Bâc river valley presents one of the most important centers of human habitat concentration since ancient times. This fact stimulated the interest towards studying this ecosystem, and a series of geographical, historical and literary descriptions appeared. They reflected the specific nature of this habitat, sometimes in a mystical form, in particular, with reference to some enigmatic elements of the valley. The morphology of the Bâc river valley is briefly characterized in the work. In particular, there are presented the opinions of scientists, researchers, historical and cultural personalities regarding one morphological phenomenon in the Bâc valley - the Bâc Gorges.

The article is dedicated to the vocal creation of Alexei Stârcea (1919-1974), a famous composer, singer and pedagogue. His early romances dating back to the years 1946-1955 are examples of love lyrics. Some of the vocal pieces signed during the reference period, such as „The Day Is Nearing Evening” („День вечереет”) on lyrics by F. Tiutchev, or „The Soul Bursts Out of the Chest” („Так и рвется душа”) on verses by A. Koltsov, entered the contemporary concert and pedagogical repertoire. The article studies two romances by A. Stârcea on poems by F. Tyutchev, which are analyzed from the point of view of form, poetic content, the interaction of music with the literary text, musical language, vocal interpretation.

From the beginning, through to Antiquity and the Middle Ages, mankind has started from a belief in the existence of a substantial soul. Belief in a spirit substance gradually receded, giving way to a spirit wholly dependent on matter and strictly material causes. The human psyche does not easily adapt to the times, and, despite humanity's breakthroughs and changing conceptions regarding life and the world, the nucleus of magical thinking has continued to exist and manifest itself incongruously relative to modern circumstances. Antiquity offers a variety of examples in representing mental illnesses (both in primary historical accounts and literary writings). Homeric texts contain multiple events and characters awash with psychopathological manifestations. This article proposes a paradigm on the exegesis of narrative myth from a double perspective: philosophical and psychological. A Greco-Roman mythological system of reference is used, centered on characters with a theriomorphic, hybrid, and/or double/mixed (human-animal) structure: satyr (Pan), centaur (Chiron, Nessus, Pholos), cyclops (Polyphemus). The concepts of dipsychism and identity dissociation are analyzed from the archetypal perspective of C.G. Jung and the philosophical and psychological perspectives of J. Radden and J.P. Dauwalder. The main claim of this thesis is an underlining of the timeliness and relevance of myth in the process of self-knowledge and of defining the complex architecture of the collective imaginary.

The article a study of the standard aspect of vocabulary usage in modern Ukrainian newspaper publications. Based on the analysis of the reference literature, the article examines the cases of conjugation of the noun quantity with the verbs to increase and to grow, as well as to decrease, to lower, to shrink, to fall in the publications of the newspaper «Den’». This newspaper is one of the most popular publications in the rating of national media. There are a lot of doubts about the proper usage of these linguistic expressions in the editorial work. The research is predetermined by the need to establish word meanings (based on the editorial practice), which is not specifically delineated in the reference literature, and to give variants of their proper usage. It is accented that the noun quantity should be used with the verbs to increase/decrease. It is noted that to indicate the amount of someone or something, the word quantity should be written, not a number. The selected examples (about 40 sentence constructions) are given the correct answers. Linguistic literacy of an individual as well as of a society in general and opinion expression depends on the selection of linguistic expressions by journalists, since linguistic mistakes in periodical newspapers, radio or TV tend to spread through the language and are required subconsciously. It is emphasized that the accuracy of word usage depends on the availability, aesthetic impact and effectiveness of newspaper publications. The purpose of this document is to describe a version of the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) computable general equilibrium (CGE) model implemented in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) that is a literal implementation of the standard General Economic Modeling Package (GEMPACK) version. It updates and supersedes the model description provided in van der Mensbrugghe (2018), which remains the main reference. The key revision of the new version is that the model is calibrated to initially normalized variables, similar to Rutherford’s GTAPinGams model (Lanz and Rutherford (2016)). One objective is to improve model scaling and hopefully numerical convergence. One advantage is that it is relatively easy to view the results in percentage change form, similar to the GEMPACK version of the model. The new version includes three additional extensions: national-level Armington preferences for domestic vs. imports, agent-level sourcing by region of origin (a variant of the multi-region input-output model (MRIO)), and rent-generating ad valorem equivalent (AVE) of non-tariff measures (NTMs).

Objectives. To evaluate the effectiveness, use, and implementation of telehealth for women’s preventive services for reproductive healthcare and interpersonal violence (IPV), and to evaluate patient preferences and engagement for telehealth, particularly in the context of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Data sources. Ovid MEDLINE®, CINAHL®, Embase®, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases (July 1, 2016, to March 4, 2022); manual review of reference lists; suggestions from stakeholders; and responses to a Federal Register Notice. Review methods. Eligible abstracts and full-text articles of telehealth interventions were independently dual reviewed for inclusion using predefined criteria. Dual review was used for data abstraction, study-level risk of bias assessment, and strength of evidence (SOE) rating using established methods. Meta-analysis was not conducted due to heterogeneity of studies and limited available data. Results. Searches identified 5,704 unique records. Eight randomized controlled trials, one nonrandomized trial, and seven observational studies, involving 10,731 participants, met inclusion criteria. Of these, nine evaluated IPV services and seven evaluated contraceptive care, the only reproductive health service studied. Risk of bias was low in one study, moderate in nine trials and five observational studies, and high in one study. Telehealth interventions were intended to replace usual care in 14 studies and supplement care in 2 studies. Delivery modes included telephone (5 studies), online modules (5 studies), and mobile applications (1 study), and was unclear or undefined in five studies. There were no differences between telehealth interventions to supplement contraceptive care and comparators for rates of contraceptive use, sexually transmitted infection, and pregnancy (low SOE); evidence was insufficient for abortion rates. There were no differences between telehealth IPV services versus comparators for outcomes measuring repeat IPV, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, fear of partner, coercive control, self-efficacy, and safety behaviors (low SOE). The COVID-19 pandemic increased telehealth utilization. Barriers to telehealth interventions included limited internet access and digital literacy among English-speaking IPV survivors, and technical challenges and confidentiality concerns for contraceptive care. Telehealth use was facilitated by strategies to ensure safety of individuals who receive IPV services. Evidence was insufficient to evaluate access, health equity, or harms outcomes. Conclusions. Limited evidence suggests that telehealth interventions for contraceptive care and IPV services result in equivalent clinical and patient-reported outcomes as in-person care. Uncertainty remains regarding the most effective approaches for delivering these services, and how to best mobilize telehealth, particularly for women facing barriers to healthcare.
