Streszczenie:
Linseed oil is very important in industry but its use is limited due to noxious vapors produced by oxidation on exposure to air. Since some of the products are toxic, release of linseed oil vapors to the environment is normally prohibited. In order to remove the odorous compounds, a biofilter system based on bacterial metabolism was designed and the major premises of bioremediation were studied. A total of five bacterial strains capable of using linseed oil vapors as their sources of carbon and energy were isolated from soil. The individual organisms were also mixed to form a bacterial consortium. The mixed population was able to degrade linseed oil vapors with more than 99 per cent efficiency. According to this research, a successful biodegradation system was designed and, theoretically, this system could be applied to the removal of linseed oil vapors in any industrial plant air stream.

Supanchaiyamat, Nontipa. "Bio-based thermoset composites from epoxidised linseed oil". Thesis, University of York, 2012. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3265/.

Streszczenie:
Bio-based thermoset composites were prepared from epoxidised linseed oil (ELO) using bio-derived crosslinkers. The use of Pripol 1009 (a dimerised fatty acid derived from natural oils and fats) as a crosslinker yielded homogenous transparent films. The inclusion of catalysts, in particular, 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP), demonstrated a significant improvement in the mechanical properties of the resins. An infrared spectroscopic study coupled with modulated differential scanning calorimetry revealed the epoxide ring opening, followed by etherification occurred during the curing process. The optimum DMAP catalyst loading was 0.5-1 % with respect to the total resin weight. The optimised formulation consisting of ELO, Pripol and DMAP were subsequently combined with starch or modified starch in order to improve the resin properties. Normal corn starch, high amylose corn starch and their acid hydrolysed derivatives were included in the formulation. The addition of starch improved the mechanical properties of the films with high amylose starch yielding a film with the most desirable properties. Expansion of high amylose corn starch (gelatinisation and retrogradation) yielded a high surface area material. The formulation with 20% wt. of gelatinised starch yielded a film with 227% improvement in tensile strength and 166% enhancement in Young’s modulus, compared to those with no added starch. Moreover, expanded starch granules uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix, resulting in a complete disappearance of phase separation. This was attributed to better interfacial adhesion of porous expanded starch and the polymer matrix. Thermal analysis revealed retardation in the cure process in the presence of starch, however the hydroxyl groups of starch were likely to enhance the extent of curing, as indicated by the higher total enthalpy of reaction. Furthermore, these bio-based composites demonstrated excellent thermal stability. Esterification of expanded starch dramatically decreased the water uptake of the resins however, the mechanical properties were compromised, owing to low thermal stability of the esterified starch.

Streszczenie:
Linseed oil has been and is used for vast number of applications, such as in food and paint industry, and wood preservation. It is a good environmental choice, as it originates from renewable sources. Linseed oil is mainly a mixture of triglyceride of fatty acids, both saturated and mono- or polyunsaturated, which allows the oil to oxidize. The oxidation occurs via an auto-oxidation mechanism with the carbon-carbon double bonds and oxygen from the air, reacts to form a polymer. Herein, four different linseed oils (three commercial ones and one industrially available) were analyzed to obtain a better understanding of why different oils provide different protection of wooden materials. This was done by a study of the unoxidized oil, followed by an oxidation time-resolved study of oxidized oil films. The analysis was done by nuclear magnetic resonance, gas chromatography - mass spectrometry and/or inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. This study provided the fatty acid profile of the oils, which were similar for all oils. The unoxidized oils contained some metals ions which probably originate from additives. Aluminum, cobalt, iron, manganese, and zinc was detected in some of the oils at concentrations up to 135 mg/L, but only manganese was detected in all oils and its concentration was much higher than all other metals together. The time-resolved oxidation study had some problems with the solubility of the formed polymers. Several solvents were examined, such as dimethylsulfoxide, alkaline alcohol solutions and toluene, before chloroform-d was chosen as solvent. Though, chloroform-d was not a perfect solvent; it was capable to solve a fraction of the sample, but the fraction decreased with oxidation time. After fifteen days of oxidation, only a few percent of the sample could be dissolved, but for short oxidation times (<48 h) the majority of the samples were dissolved. The oils were analyzed after thirteen different oxidation times. Some structural changes appeared, for example loss of unsaturated protons and some oxidation products arose, such as peroxides and aldyhydes. The diffusion coefficient decreased over the first 3-4 days of oxidation, as expected when the polymerization progressed. After a week of oxidation, the diffusion coefficient increased again, this could possibly be explained by the solubility problem for the large polymer formed. Contrary, at shorter oxidation times this method probably could still be used, as the majority of the sample was dissolved. However, the solubility problem made it impossible to conclude anything about the oxidation rate at longer oxidation times and thus prevented any ranking of the oils.
Alla dessa prover analyserades med nuclear magnetic resonance, gas chromatography - mass spectrometry and/or inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy.

Drying oils, and in particular linseed oil, were the most common binding media employed in painting between XVI and XIX centuries. Artists usually operated some pre-treatments on the oils to obtain binders with modified properties, such as different handling qualities or colour. Oil processing has a key role on the subsequent ageing of and degradation of linseed oil paints. In this thesis a multi-analytical approach was adopted to investigate the drying, polymerization and oxidative degradation of the linseed oil paints. In particular, thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), yielding information on the macromolecular scale, were compared with gas-chromatography mass-spectrometry (GC-MS) and direct exposure mass spectrometry (DEMS) providing information on the molecular scale. The study was performed on linseed oils and paint reconstructions prepared according to an accurate historical description of the painting techniques of the 19th century. TGA revealed that during ageing the molecular weight of the oils changes and that higher molecular weight fractions formed. TGA proved to be an excellent tool to compare the oils and paint reconstructions. This technique is able to highlight the different physical behaviour of oils that were processed using different methods and of paint layers on the basis of the different processed oil and /or the pigment used. GC/MS and DE-MS were used to characterise the soluble and non-polymeric fraction of the oils and paint reconstructions. GC/MS allowed us to calculate the ratios of palmitic to stearic acid (P/S), and azelaic to palmitic acid (A/P) and to evaluate effects produced by oil pre-treatments and the presence of different pigments. This helps to understand the role of the pre-treatments and of the pigments on the oxidative degradation undergone by siccative oils during ageing. DE-MS enabled the various molecular weight fractions of the samples to be simultaneously studied, and thus helped to highlight the presence of oxidation and hydrolysis reactions, and the formation of carboxylates that occur during ageing and with the changing of the oil pre-treatments and the pigments. The combination of thermal analysis with molecular techniques such as GC-MS, DEMS and FTIR enabled a model to be developed, for unravelling some crucial issues: 1) how oil pre-treatments produce binders with different physical-chemical qualities, and how this can influence the ageing of an oil paint film; 2) which is the role of the interaction between oil and pigments in the ageing and degradation process.

Streszczenie:
This thesis describes the synthesis of a novel anhydride that could theoretically be used to strengthen cellulose fibres in terms of their water resistance for potential use as a potential green replacement for fibreglass. The first chapter, the introduction, is split into 3 parts which are the 3 constituent parts to the novel anhydride molecule, the PEG, the cellulose and the linseed oil. The first part of the introduction highlights the uses of PEGs in industry now, with its flexibility and hydrophilicity resulting in its use in a wide range of products varying from cosmetics to hydraulic fluid. The second part of the introduction describes the cellulose fibres and its vast potential usefulness due to its abundance. Furthermore, its current uses are explored, with uses in the Pharmaceutical industry among other things. The third part to the introduction deals with the synthesis of the linoleic (and other unsaturated long-chain hydrocarbons) alcohol and how its unsaturated bonds can cross-link to form hydrogen bonds between individual hydrocarbons. Crosslinking between inter-molecular bonds is theorized to occur between the cellulose and the unsaturated hydrocarbon as well. The second chapter is the results and discussion which describes the results of the experimental procedures of this thesis. Due to the difficulties of collecting the pure ether during the Williamson ether synthesis stage, the practical side of the thesis was stalled at the formation the ether step. However, spectroscopically pure Linoleyl Bromides, Tosylates and Mesylates were all produced as was the pure monoprotected trityl PEGs. The third and final chapter contains the experimental data for the compounds produced in the previous chapter.

This work has investigated the possibilities of increasing wood durability using environmentally friendly chemicals. The chemical used in this study was linseed oil. The study also investigated flow paths during impregnation in pine and spruce. The first order voids of wood samples were impregnated with a low viscosity epoxi which was subsequently thermally cured. By observing the solid epoxi with a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), it was possible to determine the critical features which limit the flow in the selected species. The take up of linseed oil was measured using an X-ray microdensitometry technique. Quantification of the impregnant (within annual rings) was made by comparing densitometric curves from the impregnated samples with curves from the same specimens after the impregnated oil had been removed. Observations of fracture surfaces in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed evidence of microstructural damage caused by the impregnation process.

Streszczenie:
Lipase-catalyzed esterification and transesterification reactions of selected phenolic acids with lipids were investigated in organic solvent media. The esterification of linoleyl alcohol with dihydrocaffeic acid (DHA) in neat hexane medium resulted in highest esterification yield (EY) of 17% when a Candida antarctica lipase (Novozym 435) was used to catalyze the reaction. The use of co-solvents t-butanol and 2-butanone with hexane resulted in a dramatic increase in EY. The highest EY of 83% was obtained in hexane:2-butanone mixture of 85:15 (v/v) using Novozym 435; however lower EY (40%) was obtained when a lipase from Rhizomucor meihei (Lipozyme IM 20) was used. Increasing the amount of the co-solvent 2-butanone in the hexane:2-butanone mixture to 75:25 (v/v) resulted in a lower EY of 75% with Novozym 435; using the same enzyme, the esterification of a more unsaturated alcohol, linolenyl alcohol, with DHCA in the hexane:2-butanone mixture of 75:25 (v/v) resulted in EY of 76% which was similar to that obtained with linoleyl alcohol as lipid substrate. The esterification of DHCA and ferulic acid with linolenyl alcohol in the hexane:2-butanone mixture of 65:35 (v/v) resulted in an EY of 58 and 16%, respectively. Both linoleyl and linolenyl alcohols demonstrated mass action effects with EY of 99% in DHCA: fatty alcohol ratio of 1:8. Using a molar ratio of 1:2, the transesterification reactions of DHCA with trilinolein (TLA) and trilinolenin (TLNA) in hexane:2-butanone mixture of 75:25 (v/v) resulted in total transesterification yields (TYs) of phenolic lipids of 66 and 62%, respectively. The TYs of phenolic monoacylglycerols was higher than that of phenolic diacylglycerols for both TLA and TLNA transesterification reactions. A lower molar ratio of DHCA to TLA of 1:4 resulted in a lower TY of 53%. Using a molar ratio of 1:2, the TY of TLA and TLNA with ferulic acid in hexane:2-butanone mixture of 65:35 (v/v) was 16 and 14%, respectively. An equal molar transesterification reaction of DHCA with flaxseed oil, in a hexane:2-butanone mixture of 75:25 (v/v), resulted in the production of only phenolic monoacylglycerols (19%); however, decreasing the molar ratio resulted in the production of both phenolic mono and diacylglycerols. A molar ratio of DHCA to flaxseed oil (1:8) resulted in a TY of 76%, with 43 and 33% phenolic mono and diacylglycerols, respectively. Changing the solvent mixture of hexane:2-butanone from 65:35 to 85:15 (v/v) resulted in an increased in the TY of phenolic diacylglycerols from 24 to 55% with no significant effect on the TY of phenolic monoacylglycerols. The transesterification reaction resulted in a change in the composition of the C18:3 FA from 53% in the unmodified oil to 60 and 65% in the phenolic mono and diacylglycerols. Transesterification reaction of DHCA with fish liver oil in the solvent mixtures of hexane:2-butanone of 75:25 and 85:15 (v/v) resulted in TY of 56 and 65%, respectively. Transesterification in solvent: mixture of 75:25 resulted in a 40 and 16% TY of phenolic mono and diacylglycerols, respectively, whereas that in the solvent mixture of 85:15 (v/v) resulted in a 38 and 37% TY of phenolic mono and diacylglycerols, respectively. The structures of phenolic lipids of linoleyl and linolenyl alcohols with DHCA were confirmed by LC/MS analysis likewise for the phenolic mono and diacylglycerols from transesterification of DHCA with TLA and TLNA as well as flaxseed and fish liver oils. The phenolic esters of the fatty alcohols demonstrated radical scavenging properties similar to that of alpha-tocopherol but less than for DHCA; however, the phenolic lipids obtained with the use of TLA and TLNA as substrate as well as flaxseed and fish liver oil, demonstrated significant radical scavenging effects but less than that of alpha-tocopherol and DHCA.

Streszczenie:
This work investigated the consequences of vegetable oils spills in salt marsh sediments. The role of autochthonous bacteria in the oils degradation and degradative pathways were also studied 'in situ' and 'in vitro'. Simulated spills of sunflower and linseed oils revealed that both oils penetrated the sediments at a rate of 10-7 CM2 s-1. However, whereas 60% of the linseed oil had disappeared from the sediments after 2 months most of the sunflower oil remained after 6 months. Differences were noted in the adsorption of the oils to sediment particles and the depth at which they accumulate and these factors most likely influenced the route of the oil degradation and the sediments properties such as permeability. The contamination of the sediments with vegetable oils lead to a noticeable reduction in the abundance of plant roots and infauna. The abundance of aerobic, anaerobic and sulphate reducing bacteria in the sediments was increased by the addition of both oils, with linseed oil supporting greater bacterial density than sunflower oil. During the course of the experiment the relative abundance of oil degrading bacteria also increased. As a consequence of the increased bacterial activity, the sediments pH and Eh decreased and anoxic conditions were established, earlier in the case of linseed than that of sunflower oils. The degradation of the oils appeared to be a sequential process, initiated by the aerobic and/or anaerobic bacteria and continued by the sulphate reducing bacteria which themselves where unable to utilise the raw oils. The original composition of both oils underwent alterations mostly associated with their main fatty acid: the concentration of 18: 3(o3 and 18: 2o)6 in linseed and sunflower oil, respectively, decreased whereas that of the remaining fatty acids increased. As a result of the bacterial degradation of the vegetable oils 'new' fatty acids were detected and their identification was attempted using GC-MS analysis of their picolinyl and methyl esters. Various degradative pathways of linseed and sunflower oils involving the formation of the 'new' fatty acids are suggested with isomerisation, hydrogenation and P-oxidation as the primary routes for the degradation.

Besides these constituents it may also contain additives aiming to modify fresh mortar´s properties and/or to improve hardened mortar´s strength and durability. Already in the first civilizations various additives were used to enhance mortar´s quality, among the organic additives, linseed oil was one of the most common. From literature we know that it was used already in Roman period to reduce water permeability of a mortar, but the mechanism and the technology, e.g. effects of different dosages, are not clearly explained. There are only few works studying the effect of oil experimentally. Knowing the function of oil in historical mortars is important for designing a new compatible repair mortar. Moreover, linseed oil addition could increase the sometimes insufficient durability of lime-based mortars used for reparation and it could be a natural alternative to synthetic additives. In the present study, the effect of linseed oil on the properties of six various lime-based mortars has been studied. Mortars´ compositions have been selected with respect to composition of historical mortars, but also mortars used in a modern restoration practise have been tested. Oil was added in two different concentrations – 1% and 3% by the weight of binder. The addition of 1% of linseed oil has proved to have positive effect on mortars´ properties. It improves mechanical characteristics and limits water absorption into mortar without affecting significantly the total open porosity or decreasing the degree of carbonation. On the other hand, the 3% addition of linseed oil is making mortar to be almost hydrophobic, but it markedly decreases mortars´ strength. However, all types of tested lime-based mortars with the oil addition showed significantly decreased water and salt solution absorption by capillary rise. Addition of oil into mortars is also decreasing the proportion of pores which are easily accessible to water. Furthermore, mortars with linseed oil showed significantly improved resistance to salt crystallization and freeze-thaw cycles. On the base of the obtained results, the addition of 1% of linseed oil can be taken into consideration in the design of mortars meant to repair or replace historic mortars.

Streszczenie:
The physicochemical characteristics of seven cold-pressed flaxseed oils sold in New Zealand were investigated for their fatty acid composition, tocopherol composition, moisture and volatile matter, free fatty acids, chlorophyll pigments, unsaponifiable matter, total phenolic acids and flavanoids, and colour. The seven cold-pressed flaxseed oils exhibited significant variations in their physicochemical characteristics. Quality of the oils in terms of oxidative stability was also investigated. Four oils were found to be within the limit of good stability oil indices, measured in terms of peroxide value, p-anisidine value, conjugated dienoic acids, specific extinction in ultraviolet spectrum, acid value and food oil sensor readings (to indicate total polar compounds). The role of minor constituents in the oxidative stability of two selected oils with different levels of fatty acid composition and minor constituents was investigated. Pan heating at 150C caused loss of tocopherols, plastochromanol-8, phenolic acids, chlorophyll pigments, β-carotene and lutein and changes in the fatty acid composition. The pan-heated oils exceeded the limit of good stability oil indices using the measurement mentioned above except for acid value. The addition of α-tocopherol to the oils did not provide enhanced protection to the oils in accelerated aging of oil tests at 60C. It was most likely that phenolic acids present in the oils played a dominant role in the oxidative stability of the oils. Lipase-catalyzed transesterification of triolein with cinnamic and ferulic acids using a commercially available immobilized lipase B from Candida antarctica (Novozym 435) was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the lipophilized products as model systems for enhanced protection of unsaturated oil. The lipophilized products were identified using Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectroscopy (ESI-MS). Separation and isolation of two classes of lipophilized products was also achieved using a solid phase extraction method developed in this study for further investigation into the structure-free radical scavenging activity. Free radical scavenging activity was determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) method. The polarity of the solvents proved important in determining the free radical scavenging activity of the substrates. Ferulic acid showed much higher free radical scavenging activity than cinnamic acid, which had limited activity. The esterification of cinnamic acid and ferulic acid with triolein resulted in significant increase and decrease in the free radical scavenging activity, respectively. These opposite effects were due to the effect of addition of electron-donating alkyl groups on the predominant mechanism of reaction (hydrogen atom transfer or electron transfer) of a species with DPPH. The effect of esterification of cinnamic acid was confirmed using ethyl cinnamate which greatly enhances the free radical scavenging activity. Although, compared with the lipophilized cinnamic acid product, the activity was lower. The free radical scavenging activity of the main component isolated from lipophilized cinnamic acid product using solid phase extraction, monocinnamoyldioleoylglycerol, was as good as the unseparated mixture of lipophilized product. Based on the ratio of a substrate to DPPH concentration, lipophilized ferulic acid was a much more efficient free radical scavenger than lipophilized cinnamic acid. Lipase-catalyzed transesterification of flaxseed oil with cinnamic and ferulic acids using Novozym 435 was conducted to evaluate whether the lipophilized products provided enhanced antioxidant activity in the oil. The lipophilized products were identified using ESI-MS and were examined for their free radical scavenging activity toward DPPH in ethanol and ethyl acetate. Ferulic acid showed the highest free radical scavenging activity among all substrates tested while cinnamic acid had negligible activity. The effect of esterification of cinnamic acid and ferulic acid with flaxseed oil was similar to that with triolein. Lipophilized ferulic acid was a better free radical scavenger as compared with lipophilized cinnamic acid and extended the naturally-occuring antioxidant capacity of the flaxseed oil. Lipophilized cinnamic acid did not provide much enhanced radical scavenging activity in the flaxseed oil as the presence of natural hydrophilic antioxidants in the oil had much greater radical scavenging activity. It may still be useful for unsaturated oils with a small amount of natural antioxidants in them. Lipophilized cinnamic and ferulic acids showed higher free radical scavenging activity when tested in a less polar solvent (ethyl acetate) whereas ferulic acid showed better activity in a more polar solvent (ethanol). These results indicate that the choice of solvent for the DPPH assay is critical in evaluating the free radical scavenging activity of substrates of differing polarity, and support previous observations by other authors that the solubility of an antioxidant in relation to the site of oxidation is an important factor for consideration in the use of antioxidants.

Oxygen scavengers (OS) are one of the most important technology of active packaging, because prevents oxidative degradation related with off-flavours, off-odours and microbial growth in food. Although active packaging has been proposed since 1970s, in developing countries with a large agricultural base, active packaging still remains unexplored both in terms of application and research, there is a lack of technical criteria on O2 scavenging films, labels, sheets, and trays. This PhD thesis is a contribution in the study of linseed oil as active ingredient for OS providing a kinetic characterization of its thermo-oxidation between 40°C and 110°C in atmospheres with different oxygen concentration. In the experimental approach, innovative application of TGA was proposed to study oxygen uptake capacity complemented by headspace and peroxide value measurements. The kinetic model, derived from a classic mechanistic scheme where initiation of thermo-oxidation results from decomposition of hydroperoxides, was capable to simulated linseed oil oxidation, and also oxygen absorptions of polypropylene films, of different thickness, containing 1% of linseed oil, with hypotheses of well dispersion of linseed oil in PP matrix, and oxygen diffusion governed by the PP matrix

Streszczenie:
Radiata pine is a major plantation grown wood in the Southern hemisphere, but has inferior dimensional stability and low durability compared to other commercial species and the improvement of these features is the focus of this thesis. Specifically this thesis examines the dimensional stability, durability and mechanical properties of radiata pine after heat-treatment (160-210°C) in linseed oil. Changes in colour, micro-structure and chemistry with heat-treatment were studied. To optimise the treatment results, oil heat-treatment of wood was also carried out after thermo-mechanical compression of wood and the effect of the prior thermo-mechanical compression on stability, durability and mechanical properties were examined. The oil heat-treated wood turned uniformly darker in colour. The hydrophobicity (Water Repellence Efficiency-WRE up to 30%), dimensional stability (Ant-Swelling Efficiency-ASE up to 60%) and fungal resistance (up to 36%) were improved with the extent of the changes mainly depending on treatment temperature. However, the mechanical properties of oil heat-treated wood were reduced compared to the untreated control group. Accelerated UV weathering tests have shown that the oil heat-treated wood retained its colour and dimensional stability better than the untreated wood (the control group). The cell wall of treated wood was intact and no distinct structural changes were observed even at the most severe treatment (210°C for 6 hrs). The treatment resulted in changes to the wood chemical constituents, mainly the degradation of hemicelluloses which is believed to be principal reason for alterations in wood properties. A study of the effect of prolong heating on the linseed oil showed an increase in viscosity with heating time which in turn reduced the oil uptake and water repellency of treated wood. However, no significant difference in the colour and dimensional stability of the treated wood was noticed with oil of different heating ages. Oil absorbed by the wood during heat treatment was removed by organic solvent extraction and its contribution to the weight percentage change and moisture related properties were evaluated. The oil uptake percentage, determined by organic solvent extraction, was greater than the weight percentage loss that was deduced to occur during the heat treatment phase, which was attributed to mass losses or thermal degradation of wood constituents. Moisture excluding efficiency decreased after removal of the oil from treated wood, which suggested that the hydrophobicity of treated wood is affected by oil absorbtion. The influence of the post-treatment cooling period on properties of treated wood was studied separately. Oil uptake increased substantially with the post-treatment cooling time which in turn affected the hydrophobicity of treated wood although this effect was less important to dimensional stability. The loss of mechanical properties due to heat-treatment was successfully countered by thermo-mechanical compression of wood prior to the oil heat-treatment. The wood was compressed to 39% of its original thickness without any visible surface checks and cracks. Spring back and compression set recovery in densified wood decreased after oil heat-treatment. This combination treatment also resulted in improved fungal resistance compared to untreated wood. From this research, it is concluded that oil heat-treatment of radiata pine wood can improve its dimensional stability and durability obviating the need to introduce any persistent toxic chemicals. Thermo-mechanical densification of wood prior to oil heat-treatment can countered the loss of mechanical properties due to heat-treatment. The heating oil can be re-used in subsequent treatments and oil uptake can be minimised by limiting the post-treatment cooling time without any significant effect on the dimensional stability of treated wood.

In this research hyperbranched resins containing fatty acid residues like alkyds were synthesized. Dipentaerythritol which has six hydroxyl groups was used as the core molecule, and it was transesterified with (i) castor oil, and (ii) a mixture of castor oil and linseed oil at 240°
C in the presence of sodium hydroxide as catalyst. The resulting molecule, in either case, was then esterified with dimethylol propionic acid at 140°
C in the presence of p-toluene sulfonic acid as catalyst. Melamine-formaldehyde resin was synthesized to be used with the synthesized hyperbranched resins, and it was successfully modified by all hyperbranched resins at a ratio of 3:1. FTIR spectroscopy was used to characterize the hyperbranched resins and the thermal properties were determined by DSC. DSC showed that the hyperbranched resins decomposed between 315-345°
C. The viscosity of the resin that was synthesized by using only castor oil was 3.0 Pa.s and by using 50% linseed oil it was 1.0 Pa.s. When reacted with dimethylol propionic acid, the former&rsquo
s viscosity increased to 7.0 Pa.s, and the second&rsquo
s viscosity increased to 3.7 Pa.s. The hyperbranched resins showed excellent adhesion, gloss, flexibility, and formability. The mixture of hyperbranched resin plus melamine-formaldehyde resin samples had higher hardness values but lower gloss, adhesion and bending resistance values than the hyperbranched resins, and they had good impact and abrasion resistances.

Fatty acids are bioactive molecules, but their effects on cutaneous wound healing are not well elucidated. Our aim was to investigate effects of supplementation with different edible oils on cutaneous wound healing. Thirty days before wounding, male Wistar rats started to receive daily (g.o.), 1.5 ml/kg of linseed, fish (n-3) or sunflower (n-6) oils and continued supplementation until euthanasia. In d0 an excional wound (1cm) was performed in the back of each animal. Wound contraction and re-epithelialization were measured d0, d7 and d14, when animals were sacrificed the wound and adjacent normal skin were collected. Wound closure was significantly higher in the control group (wound area 582%) in d7 when compared to other groups (wound area of sunflower group 682%; linseed 772% and fish 732%; with p<0.05, respectivelly) Fourteen days after wounding, wound closure was significantly higher in control group (wound area of control group 211%) when compared to linseed and fish groups (wound area of linseed 271% and fish 271%), with p<0.05 for both. There was no difference in wound closure between control (wound area of control group 211%) and sunflower groups (wound area of 251%). Inflammatory cells were abundant in control, linseed and fish groups, while in the sunflower group were scarce. Large amount of myofibroblasts was observed in control and sunflower groups in the superficial region of granulation tissue (p<0.01, respectivelly). Linseed and fish groups presented high density of dilated blood vessels. Control and sunflower groups presented blood vessels occluded and concentrated in the deep region of granulation tissue. Control and sunflower groups showed moderate density of collagen fibers in deep region of granulation tissue; however, in linseed and fish groups showed high density of collagen fibers. These observations were confirmed through determination of collagen concentration using hydroxyproline assay. The hidroxyproline levels were smaller in the control and sunflower groups than in linseed and fish. The supplementation with different types of edible oils delayed wound closure and affected inflammatory infiltrate and collagen deposition

There has been a considerable effort in the last years to decrease the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in organic coatings. The risks to human health and environmental hazards associated with VOCs, governmental directives, and economic factors are the main driving forces behind this effort. One way of achieving less or no VOC containing coating systems is to produce low viscosity resins. Hyperbranched resins owing to their globular structure have low viscosities and are promising materials for decreasing the VOCs. In this research hyperbranched resins having properties close to alkyds were synthesized. Dipentaerythritol, which was used as the core was esterified with dimethylol propionic acid. The hyperbranched polyester was then esterified with the castor oil fatty acids (Castor FA). The hydroxyl group of the ricinoleic acid present in the castor FA was modified with different amounts of linseed oil fatty acids (Linseed FA) and benzoic acid. The chemical characterization of the resins was achieved by FTIR spectroscopy and the thermal properties were determined by DSC. Then, the physical and the mechanical tests were carried out. The resins containing the Castor FA only and 32.5 % Linseed FA in addition to the Castor FA had 24 and 68 Persoz hardness, respectively. The viscosity of the resins decreased from 17.3 Pa&

Dissertation presented to Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, Universidade Nova de Lisboa for obtaining the master degree in Membrane Engineering
Food emulsions play an important role in product development and formulation, as well as to encapsulation of food additives. Conventional methods for emulsion production may present some drawbacks, such as the use of high shear stress, high energy demanding and polydisperse droplet size distribution. In this sense, membrane emulsification emerges as an alternative method to overcome all this issues and to produce fine and stable emulsions. Linseed oil has been widely studied in the last years, due to its nutritional composition, being the richest ω-3 vegetable source and for that reason it was used as the raw material for emulsion production. Premix and direct (cross flow) membrane emulsification were carried out using three different membrane materials: polissulphone, cellulose ester and α-alumina membrane. For premix membrane emulsification (PME) the variables transmembrane pressure, membrane material, surfactant type and membrane mean pore size were evaluated. The membrane mean pore size was the crucial factor to achieve emulsions by PME, once it was not possible to achieve stable emulsion with mean pore sizes lower than 0.8 μm. For direct membrane emulsification, transmembrane pressure, surfactant concentration and cross flow velocity were evaluated by means of a experimental design. The evaluated responses were stability, droplet size and distribution and dispersed phase flux. For all the variables studied, only dispersed phase flux showed to have significant influence of pressure. Comparing both methods of membrane emulsification, premix showed to be more suitable in terms of emulsion production throughput and droplet size correlation with membrane pore size, however, in terms of stability, direct membrane emulsification showed much better results. Encapsulation of linseed oil by spray drying was promoted using the optimum point of the performed experimental design and the droplets size distribution has considerably changed with the addition of the wall material to the emulsion.

Abstract: The aim of this work was to evaluate the incorporation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in broilers meat using soy and linseed oil enriched rations and different levels of vitamin E. The inclusion of different percentages of linseed oil instead of soy oil and vitamin E until 400 mg/kg in the diets did not interfere in overall performance or composition characteristics of Cobb broilers carcasses. On the other hand, broilers' sexes influenced these characteristics. Male broilers consumed more ration, had higher weight gains and better feed conversions than female broilers. Female broilers had higher breast percentages and lower leg percentages than male broilers. Sex, source of polyunsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E level did not influence total fat content of meat, texture and loose of weight after cooking. The inclusion of linseed oil in the diet did not cause any modification on meat fatty acids composition or total cholesterol content. Male broilers breast and leg samples had higher PUFA content than female broilers. Male broilers had higher cholesterol contents than female broilers in breast cuts. Vitamin E at 200 mg/kg was enough to prevent oxidative rancidity in leg samples frozen at -25ºC for 45 days.

The corrosion of metallic materials causes serious financial losses and environmental impacts. Although efficient, organic coatings may generate cracks over time, generating potential sites for corrosion. Hence, the self-healing concept on coatings has been studied in order to minimize this type of damage, without requiring human intervention. The encapsulation method of film formers in polymeric microcapsules is widely used in self-healing systems. In this study, the emulsification process of linseed oil was investigated, since it is a determining step to obtain the microcapsules that will later be doped in a water based epoxy primer. Initially, it was necessary to improve the emulsion preparation, by analyzing three types of surfactants with different properties and compositions. A statistical planning adopting the full factorial design model was conducted for each of the surfactants, in which the factors considered were the variation of the weight fraction of surfactant, and the use or not of ultrasound, Ultra-Turrax® disperser and sodium chloride. The small number of trials involved and the simplicity to analyze and interpret the data justify the choice of this statistical model. The response variables were the determination of the droplet volumetric mean diameter and the measurement of the zeta potential of the emulsions to assess its stability. Moreover, the shape and characteristics of the droplets were observed with the aid of an optical microscope. The emulsion stability was also evaluated by observation and photographic register of phase separation after some rest time in a test tube. After determining the best surfactant and conditions for the emulsification to obtain the microcapsules, they were produced and added to the primer, which was applied on carbon steel specimens. The self-healing effect provided by the rupture of the microcapsules after an intentional defect was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and accelerated corrosion tests in a salt spray chamber (SSC). The microcapsules were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopes (SEM).

The aim of this work was the preparation of a smart coating with epoxy resin which is able to repair itself (self-healing effect) after suffering a mechanical defect. Self-healing is possible due to the presence of microcapsules, dispersed in the resin (clear type epoxy coating) and contain in their core the self-healing agent, the linseed oil. These capsules were prepared in an emulsion of linseed oil in water to form micelles and an outer skin or wall of poly(urea-formaldehyde) was formed. For the corrosion resistance and the self-healing effect evaluation of the coating, carbon steel plates were coated and tested by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique (EIS) in 0.1molL-1 NaCl solution and by accelerated corrosion test in salt spray chamber (SSC). After curing of the capsules additivated epoxy based clear coating applied on carbon steel plates, electrochemical impedance measurements were performed on plates with a controlled and reproducible mechanical defect. A three-electrode electrochemical cell was used. These measurements were performed after 0h, 24h and 48h of making the incision or mechanical defect. For comparison, the same measurements were performed with the plates painted with a non- capsules additivated clear coating of the same total thickness of 120 m. The results showed that the capsules were broken and released the linseed oil, which indeed have repaired the incision area after at least 24 hours of natural air aging. It was found that for the plates coated without a defect, the values of impedance modulus, |Z|, remained high. However, the coating without the capsules after 24 hours, showed a considerable decrease in |Z|. So, using EIS it was possible to quantitatively assess the mechanism of self-healing of the additivated coating using microcapsules containing linseed oil. The SSC accelerated corrosion tests showed results in close agreement with those obtained by EIS.

This study aimed to compare the efficacy of tacrolimus 0.03% eye drops diluted in two types of vehicle, flaxseed oil and olive oil in the treatment of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (CCS) in dogs. 60 dogs were used, twenty healthy dogs as a negative control group and 40 dogs diagnosed with bilateral CCS that were randomly divided into two groups, tacrolimus in olive oil (TO) and tacrolimus in flaxseed oil (TL). The dogs were evaluated monthly with ophthalmologic exams, Tear Test Schirmer (TLS), Break Test Tear Film (TRFL), Fluorescein test (TF), Test of Rose Bengal (TRB) and conjunctival cytology and at the beginning and end of the study with histopathological examination of the conjunctiva .In both groups, clinical signs, TLS, TRFL, TF and TRB showed significant improvement with one month of treatment. At study end in cytological and histopathologic evaluation, both groups showed a decrease of neutrophils, it is more significant in the TL group, and both groups showed an increase of goblet cells. Thus we can conclude that the drops of tacrolimus 0.03% diluted in olive oil and flaxseed oil was effective in the treatment of CCS and the TL group performed better as the decrease in neutrophils. Thus, the linseed oil may be a new alternative as the tacrolimus diluent.

It has grown in recent year’s concerns about the environment preservation and extension use of renewable products and its low toxicity. Thus, it is necessary to replace the use of petroleum and its derivatives by bioproduct. The petroleum derivatives can pollute soil and water further the air. As an example, only a quarter of fossil lubricants manufactured in the world are recycled, causing a huge range of toxic waste to the environment. So the aim of this work is to synthesize a biolubricant less aggressive to the environment, certainly do not contain synthetic additives, viscosity modifiers, corrosion inhibitors and high concentration of heavy metals, as well as increasing the rate of manufacture process then they cause irreparable damage for the diverse ecosystems. The biolubricant was synthetized via alkylation, etherification and esterification reactions of linseed oil. The biolubricant obtained showed excellent physicochemical properties such as high flash point, viscosity, lubricity and thermal stability, it also showed low acid value, volatility, pour point and cloud point, not being corrosive to copper, with good oxidative stability, and compete in the global lubricants market.

This study aimed to evaluate the supplementation effects of flaxseed oil and Brazil nuts oil on lipid parameters, liver enzymes, weight, and body fat deposit of male and female rats with obesity induced by cafeteria diet. Were studied 64 rats divided into 4 groups (8 males and 8 females): Control group: fed with commercial feed; Group DPH: cafeteria or palatable hyperlipidic diet (PHD), Group DPH+Li: PHD and supplemented with flaxseed oil; Group DPH+ Ca: PHD and supplemented with Brazil nut oil. The animals were weighed weekly, and in weeks 5 and 12 were assessed measures of body length and girth. After 12 weeks blood was collected for determination of total cholesterol and fractions (HDL and LDL), triglycerides, enzymes lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), collection and weighing the retroperitoneal fat. It was noted that different effects were observed in males and females supplemented with oils. The Brazil nut oil supplementation in males promoted higher levels of total cholesterol, LDL and HDL, while in female LDL values were lower than those of PHD and DPH+Li groups and similar to the control, with an increase in HDL males and females. In addition, this oil delayed weight gain and abdominal fat deposition, only in males. Supplementation with flaxseed oil in males promoted lower levels of LDL, while LDL in females was greater than the control and PHD+Ca groups. Delay in weight gain in males and females was observed, as well as less abdominal fat accumulation in females. It is concluded that in the supplementation with flaxseed oil and Brazil nut oil, in rats submitted to PHD, it is important to consider the genre. The Brazil nut oil improves the lipid profile but provides gain weight faster and higher accumulation of abdominal fat in females, while worsening the lipid profile and reduces weight gain and abdominal fat accumulation in males. In both genders, the nut-Para was favorable on HDL. In contrast, the linseed oil produced opposite effects, with improved lipid profile in males and worsens in females, retardation of weight gain in both genders, and increased accumulation of abdominal fat than the Brazil nut oil in males. It should be consider the benefits and possible effects that these supplements produce in males and females, before starting supplementation with oils rich in PUFA

Amphiphilic copolymers have attracted a large interest as they find numerous applications in catalyst support, bio-separation devices and drug delivery systems. Their auto-association in aqueous media forming micelles are well-studied, particularly by the use of smart polymers which display a significant physicochemical change in response to modification of their environment. In this work, pH and temperature responsive polymers have been studied for the elaboration of micellar systems composed of a hydrophobic core from linseed oil and hydrophilic stimuli-sensitive coronna. However the common approach is to design one specific macromolecule for one given application, with sometimes complex composition and/or architecture. We aim to investigate a straight-forward pathway towards micellar systems with finely tuned sensitivities by the cooperative self-assembly of two different copolymers to manipulate the physico-chemical behavior of the final mixed system

The linseed oil, obtained from the flax´s seed (Linum usitatissimum L.) contains high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids as oleic, linoleic and linolenic acid, which makes it susceptible to oxidation. As oxidation is a critical factor inherent to vegetable oils, this study intends to contribute with data from thermal and oxidative stability of linseed oil, with and without the antioxidant quercetin subject photo-oxidation for a period of 15 days. The oxidative process was evaluated by chemical parameters acidity index (AI), peroxide índex (IP) and spectroscopic UV-Vis, IR and 1H NMR. The results showed that the methodology adopted for the photo-oxidation in light box (at room temperature; 115.2 Lux and 15 days) was effective because there was oil degradation. The statistical analyzes confirmed that the greater the exposure time, and this coupled with the presence of light, the more easily occurs the degradation process. Was also evaluated the effect of adding quercetin and TBHQ antioxidant in the oil during photo-oxidation. The results showed that they did not prevent the formation of free fatty acid, peroxides and conjugated dienes, but prevented the formation of secondary oxidation compounds as volatile generating the rancidity, and the polymerization characterized by crosslinking.

Abstract: The development of food products with healthier properties is one of the more relevant current, favored by new nutritional guidelines for nutrition and changing habits of consumers. The reformulation of lipid meat products implemented by the use of substitute components to saturated fat in this context has been the subject of many investigations. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of addition of linseed oil as a partial replacement of pork fat in bologna sausage on its characteristics physical-chemical and sensory. Initially, was realized a factorial central composite design to determine the effects of fat content (5-20%) and linseed oil (2.5 to 12.5%) on the emulsion stability, texture profile, color and acceptance sensory. The fat content influenced the attributes firmness and chewiness at concentrations above 15% in the samples. The values of L * and b * were significantly higher (p<0.05) for formulations containing linseed oil in majority of the level evaluated. The addition of linseed oil pre-emulsified with sodium caseinate contributed to the improved stability of the meat batter. With respect to sensory properties, the addition of linseed oil influenced mainly attributes aroma, color and flavor, resulting in lower scores in the formulations with oil when compared with the control formulation. Later, was studied different herbs and spices as antioxidant compounds for use in the formulation with better results of the previous phase. The herbs with the highest antioxidant effect are coriander, sage and white pepper, referring the best answers to the test of accelerated lipid oxidation. It was observed a pro-oxidant effect in parsley. In the last stage of the study, a formulation previously selected in the first phase with 60% substitution of pork fat in linseed oil, plus blends of herbs and spices with the best results antioxidants, was evaluated by analysis of fatty acid profiles, color, texture profile, emulsion stability, TBARS and sensory acceptance. The samples generally showed lower values for firmness and chewiness than the standard formulation. The blends influenced in the objective color with higher values of b * and lower L * compared with standard formulations with oil and without herbs. The blends of herbs and spices conferred antioxidant protection to the products until the 30th day of refrigerated storage. There was a considerable increase of PUFAs and a decrease in the ratio ?-6/?-3 formulation studied when compared to the control formulation, besides good sensorial acceptance without noticeable differences in texture and notes similar to the standard for flavor and aroma. The physico-chemical and sensory characteristics demonstrated that it is possible to produce a healthier bologna sausage with a favorable lipid profile in the nutritional aspect, with up to 60% substitution of pork fat in linseed oil, rich in polyunsatured fatty acids

Two types of coatings constituted about 80 wt% of vegetable oil were prepared by photoinitiated thiol-X chemistry. The first one has been prepared by crosslinking of native and stand linseed oil triglycerides in the presence of 0.5 equivalent of various thiols (SH/ene) under air and UV radiation, without photoinitiator or solvent. The oxidation of fatty acids has shown a beneficial effect on the thiol-ene addition as well as on the final properties of coatings. This process is thus an interesting alternative for the drying of oils. The second type of coating has been obtained by photocrosslinking triglycerides of epoxidized cottonseed oil in the presence of 0.25 equivalent (SH/epoxy) of 7-mercapto-4-methyl coumarine and a photobase generator under air. This latter initiated both thiol-epoxy addition and homopolymerization of epoxy functions. This coating could be auto-healable under UV exposure

Streszczenie:
The goal of this work was to develop mortadellas replacing porcine fat with canola, linseed soy and olive oils, using two different substitution levels (50% and 100%) and its evaluation based on fatty acids profile, nutritional quality, cholesterol amount, quality characteristics, oxidative stability and microstructure profiles. In the first experiment it was determined the fatty acid composition, the proportion between PUFA (poliunsaturated fatty acids)/SFA (saturated fatty acids) and also cholesterol content of the treatments control (P), linseed 50% (L1), linseed 100% (L2), canola 50% (C1), canola 100% (C2), olive 50 %(O1), olive 100% (O2), soy 50% (S1) e soy 100% (S2). The PUFA content had increased in all treatments with vegetable oils. For SFA, the control (P) had shown higher amounts and the treatments with canola oil had shown lower amounts. The treatments with vegetable oils also had shown higher ratio PUFA/SFA in comparison to control, and its cholesterol content were comparatively lower comparing to the control. About the second experiment, it was evaluated the substitution effect the oils of canola, linseed, olive and soy using two different substitution levels (50% and 100%) replacing porcine fat. This evaluation was based on quality characteristics, oxidation stability (TBARS value), and microstructure. All treatments had shown appropriated values regarding chemical and physicals parameters, in agreement with the Brazilian food legislation, good sensory scores, good texture and color profiles measured by devices, microbiological counting similar between control and other treatments and good stability against oxidation during shelf life. About the microstructure profile, any change in the emulsion had not been found. It is possible to find a correlation between the amount of fat seen in the pictures and the value obtained by the analytic method.
