Streszczenie:
The article analyzes the conceptual paradigm of religious style as a kind of literary language in terms of the concept of an encyclopedic publication on Ukrainian stylistics. Particular attention is paid to the establishment of its differential features, functions, varieties (the language of Scripture, liturgical language, the language of preaching), categories (sacredness); coverage of the historiography of style in Ukrainian linguistics. The concept of religious style is systematized in the context of the typology of linguistic thinking, the establishment of a view of the history of literary language and its styles as phenomena closely related to the philosophy of culture, the development of national consciousness. The conceptual paradigm of religious style is based on hypero-hyponymic connections and provides substantiation of the status of concepts, establishment of their differential features and coverage of historiography of style in Ukrainian linguistics. The fundamental publication “Ukrainian Stylistics: Encyclopedia” should systematize the linguistic-stylistic terminological apparatus in the modern scientific paradigm, trace the connection of linguistic-stylistics with the theory and history of literary language. This work involves the interpretation of the category of style in the context of the typology of language thinking, the definition of its subordinate concepts, the establishment of a view of the history of literary language and its styles as phenomena closely related to philosophy of culture, development of national consciousness. The conceptual paradigm of religious style is based on hypero-hyponymic connections and provides substantiation of the status of concepts, establishment of their differential features and coverage of historiography of style in Ukrainian linguistics, which language our people refuse their daily prayers. Religious style is fully developed in all spheres of church life and unites various genres: Scripture, liturgical; Holy Father’s, life, preaching, scientific-theological, ecclesiasticallegal, educational-religious, pilgrimage, polemical, enriching the literary language with new sacred and valuable linguistic means.

Content has historically been the primary lens used to study language in online communities. This paper instead focuses on the linguistic style of communities. While we know that individuals have distinguishable styles, here we ask whether communities have distinguishable styles. Additionally, while prior work has relied on a narrow definition of style, we employ a broad definition involving 262 features to analyze the linguistic style of 9 online communities from 3 social media platforms discussing politics, television and travel. We find that communities indeed have distinct styles. Also, style is an excellent predictor of group membership (F-score 0.952 and Accuracy 96.09%). While on average it is statistically equivalent to predictions using content alone, it is more resilient to reductions in training data.

The article attempts to evaluate Farley Mowat's People of the Deer in terms of style and stylistic perspectives. Mowat (1921- 2014) is a well-known Canadian author. In the usage of the language resource, he has exhibited an excellent degree of competency. His styles of writing were an autobiographical fashion. With regard to linguistic and literary styles, the study examined style and stylistic trends. The researcher suggests that the study would be helpful for the students of linguistics and literature in the future. This study will not provide a detailed description of all stylistic devices; rather, it will provide a picture of the traditional flouted as well as variations that Mowat has introduced. Style, Stylistics, Alliteration, Repetition, Collocation, and so on are all examples of major literary and linguistic stylistics.

This research demonstrates that linguistic similarity predicts network-tie formation and that friends exhibit linguistic convergence over time. In Study 1, we analyzed the linguistic styles and the emerging social network of a complete cohort of 285 students. In Study 2, we analyzed a large-scale data set of online reviews. In both studies, we collected data in two waves to examine changes in both social networks and linguistic styles. Using the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC) framework, we analyzed the text of students’ essays and of 1.7 million reviews by 159,651 Yelp reviewers. Consistent with our theory, results showed that similarity in linguistic style corresponded to a higher likelihood of friendship formation and persistence and that friendship ties, in turn, corresponded to a convergence in linguistic style. We discuss the implications of the coevolution of linguistic styles and social networks, which contribute to the formation of relational echo chambers.

Streszczenie:
The article offers an updated interpretation of the term “epistolary style”. Attention to the conceptual meaning of this term is due to the fact that in the Ukrainian functional style it is customary to distinguish between six or seven-component systems. Taking into account or not taking into account epistolary communication in this division of spheres of communication also affects the structure of the style system. It is emphasized that during the twentieth century several paradigms of epistolary style research have changed. Different approaches to outlining its conceptual content – functional, textual, discursive and cognitive – are analyzed. Ways to resolve the discussion of the functional VS genealogical nature of the epistolary style are suggested. An overview of works that testify to the change in the characteristics of the essential features of this functional or genre-style variety of the Ukrainian literary language is presented. It is noted that from the linguistic point of view it is worth considering the correlation of the concept of “epistolary style” with the concept of MEMORY, with the categories of formality / informality, privacy, etc. Among the conclusions it is noted that the Ukrainian linguistic and stylistic terminology is dynamic. The variability of definitions reflects the dynamic stability of the relationship between the phenomenon and scientific concepts. The integrative mutual influence of linguistic stylistics, cognitive linguistics, linguocultural studies, linguistic genealogy is traced on the example of the conceptual meaning of the term “epistolary style”. The article briefly describes the main stable and dynamic features of the epistolary style. It is emphasized that with the constancy of the term “epistolary style” its internal form is changeable. Prospects for the study of the terminology of linguistic stylistics are associated with expanding the basis for the development of historical terminology, as well as deepening the linguistic aspect, ie the study of the associative structure of scientific categories, one fragment of which is knowledge of stylistic features of literary language practice. One of such stimuli in modern linguistics is the actualization of linguistics and cognitive terminology, which affect the interpretation of the conceptual content of linguistic terms.

Streszczenie:
In linguistics terms, we generally describe style as something that is used for the choice of grammatical structures and vocabulary. But, seen from the historical point of view, it has different historical and traditional connotations. The diction employed by the Augustan writers like Alexander Pope is generally regarded as cultivate, elegant and refined which is in a sharp contrast with the notion of diction used by romantics who wrote their poetry in the language of common men. The style used by Romantics is simpler, less ornate and written in colloquial language. Stylistics, on the other hand, is the branch of applied linguistic which determines the study of style used by an author in texts, particularly in literary texts. Stylistics is also known as literary linguistics that studies the figures of speech, images, metaphors, rhetorical devices and syntactical patterns which add variety and a distinctness to someone's writing and produce ‘expressive’ or ‘literary’ style. We have a number of styles in use since the origin of literature. Style has also been used as a means of decoration as well as to beautify one’s thoughts as we find in case of Aristotle, Cicero and Demetrius.

Live-stream shopping is developing rapidly, but the sales levels of live streaming products vary by different hosts. How to increase the sales volume of live streaming products has become a problem. Consumers’ purchase behavior in live streaming is determined by some subjective factors, and the persuasiveness of linguistic style affects this subjective judgment to a certain extent. Therefore, the persuasiveness of the hosts’ linguistic style will lead to changes in consumers’ purchase intentions, which will affect the sales volume of products sold in the live streaming. Based on Hovland’s persuasion model, Aristotle’s rhetoric skills, text analysis, Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic extraction model and grounded theory, this study divides the host’s linguistic persuasive style in the social e-commerce environment into five types: appealing to personality, appealing to logic, appealing to emotion, appealing to reward, and appealing to exaggeration. Combined with the sales volume of the product, we establish a regression model, and obtain the influence results of the host’s various linguistic persuasive styles on the sales of live streaming products. The results show that: the linguistic persuasive style of appealing to personality has the greatest positive impact on the sales volume of live broadcast products, but the linguistic style of appealing to logic has a negative impact. Interestingly, the same linguistic style has different effects for different types of products: the linguistic style of appealing to exaggeration has a negative effect on the sales volume of apparel products, but it has a positive influence on the sales volume of digital electrical products. Therefore, different linguistic styles should be used for different product types.

This paper is an attempt to shed light on linguistic deviation in literary style. Literary language, with its three main genres; poetry, drama and prose, is a situational variety of English that has specific features which belong to the literary and elevated language of the past. Literary language has been assigned a special status since antiquity, and is still used nowadays by some speakers and writers in certain situations and contexts. It has been considered as sublime and distinctive from all other types of language; one which is deviant from ordinary use of language in that it breaks the common norms or standards of language. A basic characteristic of literary style is linguistic deviation which occurs at different levels; lexical, semantic, syntactic, phonological, morphological, graphological, historical, dialectal and register. All these types of deviations are thoroughly investigated and stylistically analyzed in this paper so as to acquaint readers, students of English, researchers, and those interested in the field, with this type of linguistic phenomenon whose data is based on selected samples from major classical works in English literature

The article aims to substantiate the expediency of using the term Theolinguistics for the nomination of a new linguistic discipline aimed at studying the interaction of language and religion. Critical analysis of theoretical literature has shown great terminological differences in linguistic works devoted to the study of language and religion such as: religious language, sacred language, the faith language, liturgical language, religious-preaching style, religious style, church-religious style, biblical style, ; confessional style, spiritual speech, religious communication, orthodox linguistics, religiolect, and Theolinguistics. This is conditioned by the following reasons: 1) the complex and multidimensional character of research, which should take into account the data of two spheres of knowledge: linguistics and theology; 2) blurring boundaries between object and subject of language units under study within the discipline investigating the problems language and religion interaction; 3) the uncertainty of the status and nomination of the discipline, aimed to study the relationships between language and religion; 4) inconsistency in the terminological apparatus and metalanguage of the discipline aimed to study the correlations between language and religion. The scientific novelty of the study is conditioned by critical analysis of a number of linguistic terms used in the theoretical research and scientific literature done in the framework of studying the relationships between language and religion. The results of the analysis of the linguistic literature on this issue show that in linguistic science the followings can be observed: 1) the usage of diverse terms in the researches aimed at studying the interaction of language and religion; 2) the ambiguity in the interpretation of a particular linguistic term used to indicate scientific problem related to language and religion interaction; 3) the need to develop a unified terminology in the field of research aimed to investigate the relationships between language and religion.

Streszczenie:
Dorothy Richardson's Pilgrimage is increasingly being recognized as a significant work of fiction - historically, thematically and technically. Its subject matter (the life of a woman), the perspective (focalization through a female consciousness), and the frequent direct and free indirect representation of thought, all mean that Pilgrimage is a text often referred to as steam of consciousness writing or feminine writing. However, despite frequent allusions to the form of Pilgrimage, there has so far been no detailed analysis of the language of the text. In this thesis many aspects of linguistic form that have previously gone unconsidered, or been ill-defined or mis-interpreted in criticism of Pilgrimage, are discussed in terms of their functions and effects, in developing an argument about the importance of linguistic form in Pilgrimage. A variety of linguistic approaches demonstrate various ways in which the text of Pilgrimage is innovative and highly complex. This thesis explores in detail, and with extensive reference to the text, three central factors in the language of Pilgrimage - narrative structure, metaphor, and rhythm. Through textual analysis, the thesis demonstrates that the narrative is not simply a stream of the undiluted thoughts of Miriam Henderson, the protagonist, but a highly complex narrated, indirect and direct representation of Miriam's consciousness. The perspective of the narrative fluctuates as the relationship between Miriam and the narrator varies with alternating pronominal representation of Miriam (in the first- second- and third-person) and as Miriam matures and becomes less distanced from the narrator. Meanings are expressed metaphorically as Miriam's perspective cannot be recorded without radical linguistic innovation. Analysis of the processes of metaphor and metonymy reveals how Miriam's perspective is continually present (although there can be other points of view as well).

This study investigates four women’s use of typically male linguistic features in casual same-sex conversation. The aim of the study is to see whether and how this group of women use the linguistic features; swearing, interrupting, disagreeing and ignoring, questions and monologues (‘playing the expert’) which are all more common in male conversation and often part of a competitive communication style. I will also attempt to answer if these women’s linguistic behavior is typically female or male. The four women were tape recorded during a planned conversation in a casual setting and the recording was transcribed. The transcription was analyzed by using definitions of the linguistic features above made by, for example, Jennifer Coates (2004). The results show that these four women were neither typically female nor male, but a mix of the two; a hybrid.

This study assesses the relationship between the diffusion of free indirect discourse and the decline of the British epistolary novel in the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. Studying the works of a single stylist, Jane Austen, and her engagement with the mobility of the letter genre at the turn of the century, it synthesizes literary-historical, linguistic, and narratological perspectives on discourse representation in order to evaluate claims that Austen was the “pioneer” of this free indirect style, and to comment on how her simultaneous shift in genre from the first-person epistolary mode to third-person classical realism informs that style’s development.

This study examined the effect of tag questions, hesitations, and hedges on participants' attitudes toward an advocacy, perceptions of the speaker, message, and cognitive responses regarding the message. Results from 351 participants showed that although linguistic power markers affected attitudes when participants were motivated to process the message, the markers did so through different processes. The use of hesitations in an advocacy affected influenced attitudes by affecting participants' perceptions of the speaker, whereas the use of hedges influenced attitudes by affecting participants' perceptions of the message. The use of tag questions in a message influenced attitudes, but this study failed to find the mechanism this effect. The overall finding suggest a more complex relation among linguistic power components and aspects of a persuasive appeal than once thought and researchers should consider the different aspects underlying the effects of linguistic power components on persuasion.

I will then show how I use these narrative techniques in my collection Happiness and other stories.

Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The present work consists of an investigation into the form and function(s) of the so-called 'Left Dislocation' construction in Biblical Hebrew. As such, this inquiry is part of a larger domain of research that explores the nature and function of word order variation in Biblical Hebrew. As a result of a pilot study conducted by the present author in 2010, as well as recent advances within the feilds of cognitive linguistics, psycholinguistics, and discoursepragmatics— particularly with its sub-discipline known as information structure—a fresh examination of Left Dislocation in Biblical Hebrew is called for. Drawing on research from the aforementioned feilds of study, we propose a cognitive-functional theoretical model that provides a framework for a more comprehensive explanation of Left Dislocation in Biblical Hebrew. Furthermore, this work situates Left Dislocation in Biblical Hebrew against a broader profile of Left Dislocation across langauges. This is accomplished by examining the findings of a range of cross-linguistic studies—with respect to a variety of related and unrelated languages—that are concerned with both the syntactico-semantic and discourse-functional attributes of Left Dislocation. Typological generalizations drawn from these studies are then applied to the identification, classification, and explanation of a data set comprised of over 650 tokens taken from Genesis to 2 Kings. The result of this analysis is twofold. First, a thorough description is provided in terms of the external (i.e. global) and internal syntactico-semantic attributes of tokens comprising the data set. Consistent with typological findings, the data set reflects a taxonomic network of constructional schemas that are classified according to an exemplar model of conceptual categorization. Second, utilizing a cognitive-theoretical model, as well as insights garnered from crosslinguistic studies, the aforementioned syntactico-semantic description is explained in terms of the cognitive-pragmatic motivation for the use of Left Dislocation in BH narrative discourse, as well as the prototypical and non-prototypical discourse function(s) accomplished by the construction therein. Lastly, a developmental framework is proposed that accounts for the form-function variation exhibited by the tokens in our data set. This framework consists of broader developmental processes involving usage-based patterns of language change, as well as a 'panchronic' view of grammar, where synchrony and diachrony are viewed as an integrated whole, and where grammars are always emergent and never completely established.

Chung, Kai Li. "The dark triad : examining judgement accuracy, the role of vulnerability, and linguistic style in interpersonal perception". Thesis, Edinburgh Napier University, 2017. http://researchrepository.napier.ac.uk/Output/1031400.

Streszczenie:
The Dark Triad constructs – Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism – are typically associated with socially aversive behaviours, including insensitivity and exploitation. Despite this, individuals high in Dark Triad traits can be successful and popular outside of clinical and forensic contexts. Research suggests that individuals susceptible to exploitation possess traits signalling vulnerability, and Dark Triad individuals are adept at identifying these when choosing victims. Language is also known to reveal traces of Dark Triad characteristics. This project examined patterns of interpersonal perception among Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and narcissism, with the aim to highlight similarities and differences across the three traits. Three studies explored these traits and the ways they manifest in social contexts. Study 1 investigated the extent to which perceptions of individuals high in Dark Triad traits accurately correspond to personality, emotional attributes, and vulnerability within their targets for manipulation. The cues they use for their judgements were considered. Participants who completed Dark Triad measures watched four video clips of dyadic interactions. Results indicated that Dark Triad individuals demonstrated a negative–other bias, whereby they generally perceived all targets as being vulnerable. Study 2 examined the characteristics of individuals who seemingly condone and abet Dark Triad individuals. Results showed that predictors of vulnerability included low extraversion, low conscientiousness, high neuroticism, and high agreeableness. The vignette method was used to elicit perceptions towards Dark Triad behaviours. Response styles on Likert-type statements and open-ended questions between high and low vulnerability groups differed significantly; the less vulnerable were more derogatory whereas the more vulnerable were less harsh. Study 3 qualitatively assessed language as a marker of Dark Triad traits using text analysis. Case studies of individuals high on the Dark Triad scales revealed that their linguistic patterns were consistent with their respective theoretical conceptions. This mixed methods research established that the Dark Triad traits do not uniformly entail the same behavioural outcomes. It also highlighted the importance of the interactive context between the destructive and the susceptible, through which researchers can devise strategies to help organisations better manage such individuals.

Streszczenie:
This thesis develops a theory of free indirect style (FIS) in the context of consciousness presentation in narrative fiction and applies this theory to stylistic analyses of passages from three modernist novels: Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse, D.H. Lawrence's The Rainbow and James Joyce's Ulyssses. A central premise is that FIS is not merely a discourse presentation technique: it also applies to non-linguistic aspects of characters' consciousness, which it enables authors to mimetically represent with language. Because FIS and other consciousness presentation techniques are not limited to discourse, they can be accommodated within a paradigm of consciousness presentation categories that extends beyond the traditional discourse category approach. I propose a linguistic characterisation of FIS based on the unsubordinated expression of third-person subjectivity, which allows it to be treated as a broad category in terms of both its linguistic dimensions and its potential application. The theoretical framework and the analyses in this thesis also consider the potential involvement of a narrator in FIS, and they demonstrate how linguistic features can either implicate or obfuscate such a persona as a subjective voice behind the discourse. The stylistic analyses explore diverse linguistic strategies that serve to conceptualise consciousness and express subjectivity; and they establish links between linguistic features within FIS discourse and narratological and literary critical understandings of the texts, especially in relation to the generic expectations for modernist fiction. This thesis also takes issue with ideas from cognitive narratology that have diminished the importance of FIS and other stylistic categories for the analysis of fictional minds. It aims to justify, expand and improve a stylistic approach to literary interpretation that is concerned with the relationship between language and fictional consciousness.

Streszczenie:
Language and law are phenomena that have emerged in the course of human social evolution and are "fundamental to human existence". The nature of their relationship within society has long been of concern to both linguists and legal scholars in terms of rhetoric, oratory, style, and terminology. This article examines the emerging socially significant problems that can only be solved in close interaction between linguistics and law. Thus, in the 20th century, it became necessary to create new language versions of existing legislation. It was possible to solve legal problems in close cooperation with linguists, which helped to strengthen ties between the two branches of science.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of the study is to identify the figurative means in the formal diplomatic texts of speeches of chief delegates of the Ukrainian SSR to exert influence at the sessions of the UN General Assembly. Based on the interpretive method of speech analysis and the method of generalisation of the data obtained, an attempt was made to identify the main figurative means and expressiveness of speech, which help to achieve the effect of influence on the reader (listener). In order to identify hidden meanings, a hermeneutic approach to understanding texts was used. According to the results of the study, the most actively used linguistic means of figurativeness in the considered texts are epithets, metaphors, phraseologies. There are many more negative epithets used in the texts of speeches than positive ones, which aim to make people aware of the idea of self-preservation, to arouse emotions of anxiety, fear, vigilance. Metaphors of positive and negative evaluation are used to verbalise mental states, social states and thought processes. Most of the epithets, metaphors, idioms represented in the text are used to denote a negative evaluation, which is perceived as a deviation from the norm and is motivated by the following factors: the reluctance of people to take positive action, irresponsible attitude of some people towards others, socially unacceptable flaws and shortcomings. A logical continuation of this study is the analysis of linguistic means of figurativeness and evaluativity of other types of texts of the official style, including statements and conventions.

Гарлицька, Т. С. Substandard Vocabulary in the System of Urban Communication. Криворізький державний педагогічний університет, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.31812/123456789/3912.

Streszczenie:
The article is devoted to substandard elements which are considered as one of the components in the system of urban forms of communication. The Object of our research is substandard vocabulary, the Subject is structural characteristics of the modern city language, the Purpose of the study is to define the main types of substandard vocabulary and their role in the system of urban communication. The theoretical base of our research includes the scientific works of native and foreign linguists, which are devoted to urban linguistics (B. Larin, M. Makovskyi, V. Labov, T. Yerofeieva, L. Pederson, R. McDavid, O. Horbach, L. Stavytska, Y. Stepanov, S. Martos). Different lexical and phraseological units, taken from the Ukrainian, Russian and American Dictionaries of slang and jargon, serve as the material of our research. The main components of the city language include literary language, territorial dialects, different intermediate transitional types, which are used in the colloquial everyday communication but do not have territorial limited character, and social dialects. The structural characteristics, proposed in the article, demonstrate the variety and correlation of different subsystems of the city language. Today peripheral elements play the main role in the city communication. They are also called substandard, non-codified, marginal, non-literary elements or the jargon styles of communication. Among substandard elements of the city language the most important are social dialects, which include such subsystems as argot, jargon and slang. The origin, functioning and characteristics of each subsystem are studied on the material of linguistic literature of different countries. It is also ascertained that argot is the oldest form of sociolects, jargon divides into corporative and professional ones, in the structure of slangy words there are common and special slang. Besides, we can speak about sociolectosentrism of the native linguistics and linguemosentrism of the English tradition of slang nomination. Except social dialects, the important structural elements of the city language are also intermediate transitional types, which include koine, colloquialisms, interdialect, surzhyk, pidgin and creole. Surzhyk can be attributed to the same type of language formations as pidgin and creole because these types of oral speech were created mostly by means of the units mixing of the obtruded language of the parent state with the elements of the native languages.
