Abstract As a pioneer of Chinese translation, Lin Shu groped for a way out of the dichotomy to achieve a balance between foreignization and domestication. His domesticating strategies have enjoyed considerable attention from critics, whereas his foreignization has so far been largely ignored. Mainly concentrating on his collaborative translation, Yinbian yanyu, this essay opens a window to see Lin’s translation strategy as an inevitable mixture of domestication and foreignization, and throws light on the contradictory nature of Lin, identifying him as both a defender and an opponent of Confucian ideology, and as both an inheritor and an innovator of Chinese literary and linguistic traditions.

Este artículo describe la labor de un traductor con objeto de explorar las cuestiones teóricas que plantean las funciones sociales y políticas de la traducción. Los traductores chinos de finales del siglo diecinueve, como Lin Shu, fueron importantes introductores de formas e ideas occidentales. No obstante, las intenciones de Lin eran combatir el imperialismo occidental y fortalecer el debilitado imperio, por lo que sus estrategias discursivas pretendían adecuar los textos occidentales a la cultura imperial. Con su obra se demuestra, sin embargo, que la domesticación no pudo borrar lo extranjero de los materiales que decidieron traducir. Lin Shu y otros traductores introdujeron tendencias culturales que cambiaron decisivamente la cultura china y que finalmente contribuyeron a la caída del emperador.

Nell, the protagonist in The Old Curiosity Shop, is an angle but was translated into a filial daughter adhering to the Confucian doctrines by Lin Shu in late Qing China. The translator, Lin Shu reshaped Nell’s appearance, mental activities and behaviors to construct a role model of filial piety. Lin’s translation is actually rewriting. Such rewriting is necessary to fulfill his translation purposes: to defuse the national crisis by introducing beneficial elements from Western culture; to re-glorify the Confucian doctrines by proving that the Westerners upheld the same morality as those in traditional China. This paper thus argues that translation, the means of introducing foreign images, is a vehicle for Lin Shu to construct and imagine self-image.

Abstract An important feature in the translation history of China in the early 20th century was the collaboration between a Chinese monolingual and a Chinese bilingual in a large-scale translation of Western fiction. Such a collaboration pattern lasted for almost two decades before more Chinese bilinguals were trained in the 1920s. The partnership of Lin Shu (1852-1924) (a prominent written translator) and Wei Yi (1880-1933) (one of Lin Shu’s oral translators) lasted for 10 years, during which they translated over 40 English novels into Chinese. Through textual analyses of their co-translation of Charles Dickens’s David Copperfield in 1908, this article unravels the long-neglected contribution of Wei Yi in the work, and points to the importance of “orality” in their translation process in shaping Lin Shu’s translations. The article is structured into two parts: first, the background of Lin Shu and Wei Yi, and their collaboration; second, evidence of Wei Yi’s visibility in the translation in terms of textual changes from indirect speech to direct speech, the use of annotations, and the characteristics of the translation.

The study of stability of the stellar disks of flat galaxies is the first step towards an understanding of the phenomena of spiral structure. To explain the spiral pattern, Lin and Shu (1964) further developed the Lindblad's idea of density waves by considering the spiral structure as the collective effect in a self-gravitating system. As an extension to the original Lin-Shu theory, unstable spiral modes have been obtained from an asymptotic analysis (e.g., Bertin [1980]). In such “modal theory”, the Jeans-type instability (even weak) is important to the maintenance of spiral structure.

Hasta hoy en día, la mayoría de los estudios cervantistas sostienen la idea de que Lin Shu (1852-1924) es el primer traductor de Don Quijote al chino (1922). Sin embargo, durante mucho tiempo, se ha ignorado a otro traductor chino, Ma Yifu (1883-1967), que tradujo Don Quijote mucho antes que Lin Shu, en 1905. De hecho, en 2008, el estudioso japonés Tarumoto Teruo ya había descubierto su traducción, publicada en el Semanario de la independencia, en 1913. Pero la idea errónea es tan popular y arraigada que continúa en muchos estudios hasta la actualidad. Por otro lado, Ma Yifu es mucho menos conocido que Lin Shu, incluso para los chinos, lo que hace más difícil corregir esta idea equivocada. ABSTRACT We revisit the topic of shape evolution during the spherical collapse of an N-body system. Our main objective is to investigate the critical particle number below which, during a gravitational collapse, the amplification of triaxiality from initial fluctuations is effective, and above which it is ineffective. To this aim, we develop the Lin–Mestel–Shu theory for a system of particles initially with isotropic velocity dispersion and with a simple power-law density profile. We first determine, for an unstable cloud, two radii corresponding to the balance of two opposing forces and their fluctuations: such radii fix the sizes of the non-collapsing region and the triaxial seed from density fluctuations. We hypothesize that the triaxial degree of the final state depends on which radius is dominant prior to the collapse phase leading to a different scheme of the self-consistent shape evolution of the core and the rest of the system. The condition where the two radii are equal therefore identifies the critical particle number, which can be expressed as the function of the parameters of initial state. In numerical work, we can pinpoint such a critical number by comparing the virialized flattening with the initial flattening. The difference between these two quantities agrees with the theoretical predictions only for the power-law density profiles with an exponent in the range [0, 0.25]. For higher exponents, results suggest that the critical number is above the range of simulated N. We speculate that there is an additional mechanism, related to strong density gradients that increases further the flattening, requiring higher N to further weaken the initial fluctuations.

Lin Shu brought the style of elegance and succinctness of the ancient Chinese prose into his translation, but he also tried his best to convey the style of the original to readers. When rendering various original styles, he naturally brought the “inelegant” and “insuccinct” elements into the translation, thus weakening elegance and succinctness to some extent. Nevertheless, the “elegant and succinct” elements in his translation was maintained at a relatively high proportion as a whole, so his translation style could still be categorized as that of “elegance and succinctness”. In terms of its dynamic formation, it was closely related to the translator, target readers and translation cultural strategy. To be specific, Lin Shu’s good command of classical Chinese prose, the stylistic preference of traditional literati and scholar bureaucrats, as well as the translation cultural strategy of assimilating the foreign languages with Chinese style, all contributed to the formation of Lin’s translation style.

When Christian values fall into the hands of translators, how are these Christian values represented in a non-religious or areligious target culture? How do the translations reflect the conflicting ideologies of the time and of the individual translators? This article will examine Lin Shu's major translations of The Merchant of Venice in early twentieth-century China, an important period when reform of Confucianism encountered imported Western ideals. Close textual analysis of the translation produced by Lin Shu, a Confucian literatus and a reformist, reveals that religious content in English literary works was manipulated, Christian references often being omitted or adapted. This study illustrates the translator's strategies, picking and choosing what to domesticate in the translated work to suit his ideology, and how a society's expectations and ideologies shape the translation product. The analysis offers some perspectives for understanding how the translator's linguistic and religious roles and ideologies shaped the Chinese Shakespeare, and how the religious values were re-presented in early twentieth-century China.

Abstract Lin Shu (1852-1924), one of the most important forerunners in China's history of modern literary translation, rendered some 170 works of European and American literature into Chinese during the late-Qing and early-Republican period from 1890 to 1919. In so doing, he not only heralded the advent of Western literature in China, but also introduced Chinese writers and readers to many new literary techniques. However, important as they are, Lin's translations are not translations in the true sense of the word, because, unable to read a single foreign language himself, he had to depend on his collaborators, who orally relayed the meaning of the original to him. During the process of translation, he freely resorted to such techniques as addition, omission, abridging, etc., giving his work a strong personal stamp. This article is an attempt to shed light on Lin's mode of translation and to evaluate his role as a translator by closely examining his version of La Dame aux camélias, the first Chinese translation of a work of Western literature, against the French original. Résumé Lin Shu (1852-1924), l'un des pionniers de l'histoire moderne de la traduction littéraire en Chine, a adapté en chinois quelque 170 oeuvres des littératures européenne et américaine au cours de la fin de la période Qing et au début de la pétiode républicaine s'étendant de 1890 à 1919. Son travail a été l'instrument de l'avènement de la littérature occidentale en Chine et a permis aux écrivains et lecteurs chinois de découvrir plusieurs nouvelles techniques littéraires. Néanmoins, malgré l'importance incontestable des traductions de Lin, celles-ci ne sont pas des traductions au sens littéral du mot, car étant lui-même totalement incapable de lire des langues étrangères. Lin dépendait de ses collaborateurs qui lui transmettaient oralement la signification des oeuvres originales. Au cours du processus de traduction, il faisait librement appel à différentes techniques, telles que l'addition, l'omission, les raccourcis, etc., de sorte qu'il imposait aux oeuvres traduites un cachet très personnel. ABSTRACT Distances and transverse along the Galactic longitude velocities vl of 2640 Gaia EDR3 O–B2 stars of Xu et al. within 2.5 kpc from the Sun and 250 pc from the Galactic plane with relative distance and velocity accuracies of <10 and <50 per cent are selected. Under the assumption of spiral density waves, both Galactic differential rotation parameters and parameters of the wave structure in this solar neighbourhood are derived from observed vl. In contrast to all preceding studies, we take into account the effect of small but finite thickness of the disc of the Galaxy on even parity (‘sausage’) gravity perturbations of the kind investigated by Lin and Shu. As previously predicted by the modified theory of 3D density waves, two scales of periodic rarefaction–compression irregularity of the vl velocity field with the radial λ0 ≈ 1.5 kpc and vertical ξ0 ≈ 1.0 kpc wavelengths in the form of a spiral wave propagating in the disc are revealed. The Gaia’s DR2 line-of-sight and EDR3 longitudinal velocities analyses performed in the last papers of a series exhibit consistent findings, thus providing a further evidence to support the Lin–Shu density-wave proposal.

Large interstellar distances imply that protostars are dynamically decoupled from gas ram pressure (see, e.g., Aarseth, Lin & Papaloizou 1988) and are effectively isolated self-gravitating objects. With this in mind we apply Newtonian gravity to collapsing cold spheroids of point masses to model the Lin-Mestel-Shu (1965) solution for dust. Incomplete violent relaxation (e.g., van Albada 1982) means that traces of the initial orbit distribution in energy remain. We show here that furthermore the degree of orbit mixing achieved correlates well with initial morphology, by collapsing two-mass component uniform spheroids of different aspect ratio. We setup a test problem to seek out a relation between orbit survival and initial morphology which we then solve numerically.

This paper reviews the research on the systematics and biology of the superfamily Bdelloidea in China, with an updated checklist of 48 species belonging to 16 genera in the family Cunaxidae and 26 species belonging to nine genera in the family Bdellidae. Important contributions to the Chinese fauna of the Bdellidae were made by Tseng Yi-Hsiung (Taiwan), Hong Mei (former with Fudan University in Shanghai) and Lin Jian-Zhen (and colleagues in Fujian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Fuzhou), and those to the Cunaxidae by Tseng Yi-Hsiung, Li Long-Shu (and colleagues in Southwest University, Chongqing) and Lin Jian-Zhen (and colleagues). There have been relatively few studies on the biology and use in biological control of the Bdelloidea in China, and these are briefly reviewed.

This essay uses a case study of Lin Shu (1852-1924) and(1876-1924) to argue for an approach to world literature called “reading distance.” Through a close reading of Lin Shu's andtranslations of Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre'sPaul et Virginie (Paul and Virginia)into Chinese and Arabic and a consideration of their work as translators and intellectuals, the essay reads between peripheries—places like Cairo and Beijing—to understand how intellectuals in those places grappled with difficult questions concerning translation, language reform, and changes in reading publics. By thinking with models of distant reading but also engaging with materials that are usually excluded from those models, the essay examines an important point of overlap in the intellectual and cultural histories of the Arab and Chinese enlightenments of the early twentieth century.

Lin Shu, who does not comprehend English, translated roughly 170 foreign novels. His second translation Hei Nu Yu Tian Lu (Uncle Tom’s Cabin), has influenced Chinese translation history and modern writers. Many Chinese Scholars has studied Hei Nu Yu Tian Lu before, but no works are studying the variation of the black image in Hei Nu Yu Tian Lu. This paper explains how the black image varies from the black slave to the Chinese literary slave after translation based on skopos theory.

A fad of cultivating Chinese women’s martial spirit was witnessed in late Qing China as a result of Chinese male elites’ effort to mobilize women in nation rejuvenation. Role models of female martial spirit were thus urgently needed. A prototypical woman of martial spirit was constructed by Lin Shu through translating The Thane’s Daughter, an imaginary history of lady Macbeth. Lin reframed the original from a tale about parenting to a biography of a self-constituting gallant woman. Also, the evil attributes of the heroine was deliberately covered, including her sinister appearance, her unfilial thoughts to her father and her ruthlessness to people surrounding her. Finally, features indicating her martial spirit were foregrounded, like masculinity, resoluteness and courage. To further highlight martial spirit, the translator established a contrast between martial spirit and gentleness. This paper therefore argues that translation, the media of introducing otherness may turn out to be a vehicle of self-imaging, especially when a certain image is desperately needed in the target culture.

ABSTRACTIn spiral galaxies, the pitch angle, α, of the spiral arms is often proposed as a discriminator between theories for the formation of the spiral structure. In Lin–Shu density wave theory, α stays constant in time, being simply a property of the underlying galaxy. In other theories (e.g. tidal interaction, and self-gravity), it is expected that the arms wind up in time, so that to a first approximation $\cot \alpha \propto t$. For these theories, it would be expected that a sample of galaxies observed at random times should show a uniform distribution of $\cot \alpha$. We show that a recent set of measurements of spiral pitch angles (Yu & Ho) is broadly consistent with this expectation.

ABSTRACT Distances and line-of-sight velocities of 964 Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) OB stars of Xu et al. within 3 kpc from the Sun and 500 pc from the Galactic mid-plane with accuracies of <50 per cent are selected. The data are used to find small systematic departures of velocities from the mean circular motion for the stars in the solar neighborhood due to the spiral compression-type (Lin–Shu-type) waves, or spiral density waves, e.g. those produced by real instabilities of spontaneous gravity disturbances, a central bar or a companion system. A key point of the study is that our results are consistent with the ones extracted from the asymptotic density-wave theory. Revised parameters of density waves in the solar vicinity of the Galaxy are also provided.

ABSTRACT Following Lin and Shu, the spiral structure in the Milky Way disc is considered as an oscillating density-wave pattern. As such, regular enhancements in density are relatedly linked to systematic variations in velocity of young stars and stellar clusters, and interstellar gas. We explain measured line-of-sight velocities of 252 open clusters with ages <100 Myr of Tarricq et al. in the 3-kpc-scale solar neighbourhood in terms of a density wave. New estimates of the parameters of solar peculiar motion and Galactic differential rotation corrected for the effects of small-amplitude density waves, the radial and tangential components of systematic motion of clusters due to the spiral arms as well as the geometrical and dynamical parameters of the waves are suggested.

This study examined how Taiwanese philosophy has been received and researched in South Korea since its start to the present day. It takes the form of a survey, classifying the articles about Taiwanese philosophy which were published in South Korea over the years from 1994 to 2018 by the theme. It selected nine philosophers whose influence was profound in Taiwanese philosophy and observed the currents in the scholarship on each philosopher. The names of the selected philosophers are: Fang Thomé H., Hu Shi, Huang Chun-chieh, Lin Yutang, Liu Shuxian (Liu Shu-hsien), Mou Zongsan, Tang Junyi (Tang Chun-I), Xu Fuguan, Yu Yingshi (Yu Ying-shih). Sixty-one related papers were summarized and reviewed, and each of them was classified by the publication date, author, language, publisher and keywords. The survey revealed the limitations in Asian philosophy scholarship with regard to Taiwanese philosophy in South Korea, in terms of both quantity and quality. The survey also suggested a possible solution to these limitations and directions for scholars in the future. The study thus serves as a foundation that can boost discussion and the balanced development of South Korean philosophy studies, as well as of Asian philosophy in general.

??? Yehang Chuan ‘Night Ferry’ is an encyclopaedic masterpiece and the chef-d’oeuvre of ?? Zhang Dai (circa 1597-1689), an illustrious historian, poet, dramatist, essayist, aesthete, musician and gastronomist in late Ming and early Qing China. Night Ferry cumulates more than four thousand entries and encompasses a veritable cornucopia of topics in an elephantine range. In this research, I investigate Chapter Twenty ?? Fang Shu ‘Alchemy and Sorcery’ of Night Ferry, which comprises Section ?? Fu Zhou ‘Amulets and Incantations’ and Section ?? Fang Fa ‘Prescriptions and Practices’. Both sections abound with depictions pertaining to occult acts and paranormal forces, the vast majority of which embody cultural allusions concerning religion, divination and patriarchy. Furthermore, Chapter ‘Alchemy and Sorcery’ is featured by humorousness, though Night Ferry is not a dedicated jestbook. The humorous effect in Night Ferry is not attained via sarcasm or homo-/hetero-erotism, as manifested by derisive and prurient jokes compiled in a renowned pre-modern jestbook entitled ????Xiao Lin Guang Ji ‘A Collection of Classic Chinese Jokes’.

The spectral radius of a graph is the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the graph. Let $T^*(n,\Delta ,l)$ be the tree which minimizes the spectral radius of all trees of order $n$ with exactly $l$ vertices of maximum degree $\Delta $. In this paper, $T^*(n,\Delta ,l)$ is determined for $\Delta =3$, and for $l\le 3$ and $n$ large enough. It is proven that for sufficiently large $n$, $T^*(n,3,l)$ is a caterpillar with (almost) uniformly distributed legs, $T^*(n,\Delta ,2)$ is a dumbbell, and $T^*(n,\Delta ,3)$ is a tree consisting of three distinct stars of order $\Delta $ connected by three disjoint paths of (almost) equal length from their centers to a common vertex. The unique tree with the largest spectral radius among all such trees is also determined. These extend earlier results of Lov\' asz and Pelik\'an, Simi\' c and To\u si\' c, Wu, Yuan and Xiao, and Xu, Lin and Shu.
