The Cretaceous formations of the Mons Basin, of the Méhaigne-Petite Gette Basin area and of the Liège-Limburg Basin area are described and discussed following recent literature. Of the 22 Cretaceous formations of the Mons Basin 8 are of Early Cretaceous age and 14 of Late Cretaceous age. In the Méhaigne-Petit Gette Basin area no formations have been named, but the different levels found have been considered as members; their age varies from? Coniacian to Late Maastrichtian. In the Liège-Limburg Basin area four Cretaceous formations have been recognised, divided in very detailed members based on lithostratigraphical characteristics (flints) by Felder; these formations vary in age from? Coniacian to uppermost Maastrichtian.

Real men: an exploratory research into masculinity among Belgian-Limburg miners In this article we want to initiate a gender approach in the study of the labour market for miners in Limburg, in particular by looking at the ways in which miners defined and expressed their masculinity. Interviews, testimonies and a number of contemporary sources show that miners in the Belgian Limburg mines defined and expressed their masculinity by working hard, being competitive, having lots of after-work activities, not showing fear and minimizing risks. The gender identity among miners in the Campine area arose partly as a result of broader socio-economic evolutions: underground women’s work was banned in Belgium since 1911, which made the underground the exclusive terrain of men. Another decisive factor was the drastically new labour organization that was introduced by the Limburg mining companies. The traditional miners’ occupation lost much of its charm through mechanization and stricter supervision. Professional knowledge and autonomy were (partly) replaced by physical strength and competitiveness. This analysis shows that employers also used a certain form of hegemonic masculinity strategically.

Hasselt is the capital of the Belgian province of Limburg, with a population of some 68,000. The town is situated in the northern part of Belgium, about 35 km west of the national border between Belgium and the Netherlands, and 20 km north of the Dutch-French language border, which separates Belgium into a northern part (Flanders) and a southern part (Wallonia). The dialect of Hasselt belongs to the West-Limburgian dialect group (Goossens 1965). The number of dialect speakers is steadily diminishing, and the remaining ones are all bilingual with Standard Belgian Dutch (cf. Verhoeven 2005). An early comprehensive description of this dialect is given by Grootaers & Grauls (1930). The only available dictionary is Staelens (1989).

Abstract. The article focuses on dialect change in the western and eastern periphery of the southern Dutch language area, i.e. in the province of West-Flanders and the province of Limburg. Both by a general survey of the dialect situation in these regions and by the analysis of two instances of phonological change, it is demonstrated that the actual state and dynamics of these areas is essentially different in terms of dialect loss and dialect vitality. The West-Flemish data reveal an intertwining of interdialectal and standard language influence, whereas the changes registered in the Limburg data unambiguously point to standard language influence.

Streszczenie:
Abstract In between ‘vandalism’ and ‘la manie de tout conserver’. Limburg’s archives in revolutionary timesThe history of the Dutch province of Limburg during the French period from approximately 1795 to 1815 is more like that of Belgium and the Rhineland than the north of the Netherlands. The province itself, in a border region of the Netherlands, is a creation of the nineteenth century with a very complex geopolitical history going back to the Middle Ages. So Limburg, located at the edge of several countries, is a region which has never received much attention at a national level. The same is true for the Limburg archives of the Ancien Régime. This is of particular note because the Limburg archives contain the oldest original sources in the Netherlands. Despite this, consulting the archives of the Ancien Régime was not attractive to historians until well into the twentieth century. In the past many records of institutions dating to the Middle Ages were deliberately destroyed or lost as a result of war, or taken abroad, or they were accidentally ‘forgotten’ and ended up in the attic. Not unjustly the revolutionary government during the French period has been regarded as bearing directly or indirectly a great responsibility for this loss. But this is not the whole picture, and the account must be more nuanced. Owing to secularization, records from religious orders were lost in the decades leading up to the French period; and after 1815 there was little interest in archives, except perhaps for financial reasons. Documents previously sent for safe-keeping abroad disappeared from circulation. However, sometimes by coincidence, sometimes by the concerted actions of lovers of old documents, a number of extremely important historical documents have been preserved. The largest part of these has over time been acquired by the State Public Record Office of Limburg. As a result of this collecting of archives from abroad, Limburg has a richer collection from this period than is found in the rest of the Netherlands.

Maastricht (Mosae Trajectum in Roman times) is the capital of the Dutch province of Limburg and one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. Situated in the extreme south, close to the Belgian border, the city is fairly small, with a population of just over 120,000. Maastricht enjoys a world-wide reputation as the place where the Maastricht Treaty was signed in 1992. The dialect of Maastricht belongs to the south-eastern dialect group (Weijnen 1966: §§ 166, 173), which shares a number of properties with dialects in Belgium and Germany. A more recent classification (Belemans, Kruijsen & van Keymeulen 1998) assigns the dialect to Central Limburgian, which comprises seven subgroups in the Netherlands and Belgium, more particularly to Trichterlands. Two earlier descriptions are Houben (1905), which is historically oriented, and van Buuren (1991).

The prevalence of hepatitis C and related risk factors in drug users were compared in two geographic regions in Belgium, the city of Antwerp and the mixed urban–rural area of Limburg. All 310 participants were surveyed and screened for hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Prevalence rates of anti-HCV, anti-HBc and anti-HIV were 71, 62 and 4% in Antwerp and 46, 21 and 0% in Limburg respectively. Injecting drug use, duration of injecting drug use, work as a commercial sex-worker, originating from Turkey or Northern Africa, marginalization and anti-HBc positivity were identified as independent predictors for hepatitis C infection. In this study an important difference in HCV seroprevalence among drug users in a methadone maintenance programme across two geographic regions in Belgium was demonstrated. This was explained not only by variations in drug-related risk behaviour, but also by differences in sexual risk behaviour and socio-economic status.

During and immediately after the First World War the Belgian government developed plans to annex parts of the Netherlands after the war, such as the province of Limburg. How did industrialists in the capital Maastricht respond to these Belgium goals? In this article, I explore the perspectives of an industrialist, a state detective and an economist in this matter. The industrialist was a fierce opponent of annexation, while the state detective was convinced that annexionists, those who were in favour of annexation, should mainly be found among major industrialists. The economist, on the other hand, did not rule out the possibility that some of Maastricht’s traders and industrialists would prefer a connection with Belgium. How did they come to these conclusions and to what extent did their considerations and other sources provide an answer to the research question of this article? Taking both gossip and facts into account, we may conclude that indeed there could have been traders and industrialists who supported the Belgian aspirations and preferred to join Belgium. However, the general claim that, in Maastricht especially, major industrialists were in favour of annexation lacks any factual evidence

Cabrio aims to prevent homelessness with a cross-sector, multidisciplinary and autonomous team that establishes contact with homeless people in their living environment in an outreach manner, offers customized support and connects to social facilities. The team aims to help homeless people in finding sustainable housing. In the Belgian province of Limburg there are 3 Cabrio teams that serve 5 local authorities. The welfare organisation CAW Limburg coordinates the 3 Cabrio teams. Cabrio is active within the framework that is offered by the Flemish Action Plan to combat homelessness 2020-2024. https://www.departementwvg.be/welzijn-en-samenleving/welzijnswerk/dak-en-thuisloosheid Objectives: •Making contact in the social environment of homeless people and building a close relationship with homeless people. •Offer support in various life domains and realize a connection with services (network). Guarantee continuity in care. •Strengthening the personal network of clients. •Working on sustainable housing with social and other housing services. •Working on connection through small-scale projects with a high level of participation of the target group. This is part of the socialization of care. •Signalling structural barriers to local policy makers. Methodical framework: Cabrio works in an outreaching and multidisciplinary way and uses methods from addiction care, counselling for people with psychological vulnerability and welfare work. Cabrio works from a shared vision of homelessness. Outreach work: Counsellors contact clients in the public space, at their home or in the semi-public space (e.g. institution, facility) with a participative basic attitude. They focus on making a connection with 'distrustful' clients Multidisciplinary work: To aim for care continuity the Cabrio team brings together different disciplines: general social work (CAW Limburg), addiction care (ZorGGroepZin), psychiatric home care (Beschut Wonen, Mobiel Herstelteam Psychiatrie), special youth care (CANO Pieter Simenon), outreach work (straathoekwerk). •Expertise of supervisors is shared in the Cabrio team. •Different perspectives and different expertise provides customized guidance. •The collaboration and sharing of expertise strengthens the communication and trust between the client and the team and improves the follow-up of specific cases. •Supervisors acquire new insights and methods in guiding homeless people to their own work setting. Special methods: Harm reduction (or harm-limiting work), motivational interviewing, circle of behaviour change Prochaska and Diclemente, making quarters, guideline for dealing with ethical dilemmas, Housing First. 1.4.Registration by the Local Homeless Consultation The local authorities organize a Local Homeless Consultation (LDO) in which various welfare organizations participate that have contacts with homeless people through their daily practice. The LDO has 3 tasks: •Making an inventory of homeless people in the work area. •Coordinating which service/counsellor takes care of the specific client. •Tackling signals or structural barriers. The LDO refers to the Cabrio team if the client: •Does not have stable housing (see Ethos). •Scores bad on several life domains and struggles with special problems (e.g. addiction, psychological vulnerability, medical problems, ...) •Has a disrupted personal network or does not have or has a few contacts with care services (also called care avoiders).

AbstractIn the extended type area of the Maastrichtian Stage (southern Limburg, the Netherlands; provinces of Limburg and Liège, Belgium; Aachen area, Germany), the pachydiscid Pachydiscus (P.) neubergicus (von Hauer, 1858) ranks amongst the rarer species of Campanian-Maastrichtian ammonites. To date, just four specimens are known, which show P. (P.) neubergicus in this area to have been confined to the Vijlen Member (Intervals 0–6, Gulpen Formation). This would correspond to the basal sumensis Zone to the lower cimbrica Zone, or tegulatus/junior Zone, depending on placement of the Lower/Upper Maastrichtian boundary. Material available has been collected in recent years at the CBR-Lixhe (Liège, Belgium) and ENCI-Maastricht bv (Maastricht) quarries as well as from outcrop 62D-26 at Vijlenerbosch (Vijlen, the Netherlands). Records of P. (P.) neubergicus, the proposed index for the base of the Maastrichtian Stage, from elsewhere in Europe (northern Spain, SW France, Austria, Denmark, Bulgaria), suggest it to have been fairly long-ranging and show local first occurrences to have been diachronous.

Recently published and/or ongoing work on coleoid and ammonoid cephalopods in these areas allows tie points between NW Europe and the United States (Western Interior, Gulf Coast, Atlantic Seaboard) to be established. Future studies need to refine the resultant, rather crude, scheme. The ultimate aim is a more robust picture of mosasaur taxonomy, biostratigraphy and palaeobiogeography, and a detailed evaluation of migratory patterns across the Atlantic.

One of the rising challenges for architects is to rethink the future of suburban territories built through the repetition of the detached single-family house. If until the 90’s the suburbs offered an attractive way of life, today many suburban territories arein demographic and economic decline. The province of Limburg in Flanders (Belgium) is a clear example of such condition. The article illustrates a design-research project that aimed at rethinking this suburban territory as a place where new generations could live and work. By reflecting on the historical circumstances that led to the construction of this suburban region, on the recent transformations of domestic space, and on the potential of landscape resources to restructure sprawling territories, the proposal becomes a wider case through which to start rethinking the condition of living and working in the contemporary city.

ABSTRACT We performed multilocus sequence typing on 203 invasive disease isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae to assess the clonal compositions of isolates from two provinces in Belgium and to determine the relationship between clones and antibiotic nonsusceptibility, particularly nonsusceptibility to two or more classes of antibiotics. The frequency of multiclass nonsusceptibility (MCNS) was higher in the province of West Flanders (38%) than in Limburg (21%). This difference was largely attributable to five clonal complexes (CC156, CC81, CC143, CC193, and CC1848), which contained high proportions of isolates with MCNS (>47%) and which were circulating at higher frequencies in West Flanders. The S. pneumoniae population changed over time, as CC156 and CC81 declined in frequency from 1997 to 1999 to 2001 to 2004. Over the same time period, the frequency of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine 7 (PCV7) serotypes dropped from 69% to 41%. In contrast, the nonvaccine serotype 19A increased in frequency from 2.1% to 6.6%. None of these changes can be attributed to PCV7 vaccine, as it was not in use in Belgium during the time period studied. There was evidence that MCNS clones flowed from West Flanders to Limburg.

Tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) is the most important tick-borne zoonotic virus in Europe. In Belgium, antibodies to TBEV have already been detected in wildlife and domestic animals, but up-to-date prevalence data for TBEV are lacking, and no studies have assessed its seroprevalence in sheep. Serum samples of 480 sheep from all over Belgium and 831 wild boar hunted in Flanders (northern Belgium) were therefore screened for TBEV antibodies by ELISA and plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT), respectively. The specificity of positive samples was assessed by PRNTs for TBEV and the Louping Ill, West Nile, and Usutu viruses. TBEV seroprevalence was 0.42% (2/480, CI 95%: 0.11–1.51) in sheep and 9.27% (77/831, CI 95%: 7.48–11.43) in wild boar. TBEV seroprevalence in wild boar from the province of Flemish Brabant was significantly higher (22.38%, 15/67) compared to Limburg (7.74%, 34/439) and Antwerp (8.61%, 28/325). Oud-Heverlee was the hunting area harboring the highest TBEV seroprevalence (33.33%, 11/33). In an attempt to obtain a Belgian TBEV isolate, 1983 ticks collected in areas showing the highest TBEV seroprevalence in wild boars were tested by real-time qPCR. No TBEV-RNA-positive tick was detected. The results of this study suggest an increase in TBEV prevalence over the last decade and highlight the need for One-Health surveillance in Belgium.

AbstractUphill and drainage line environments reveal many hiatuses or discordances, because of truncation by erosion. In downslope position accumulation often prevailed outside the drainage lines and prevented erosion, even during unstable periods. Consequently, downslope sections yield the most detailed environmental data, but often lack contact with uphill series. However, for stratigraphical correlation the contact between downslope and uphill series is essential. In the Veldwezelt loess sequence this contact is intact, which provides additional data on transitional processes. In view of these special palaeoenvironmental conditions, exhibiting a transition between downslope and uphill areas and a south-east trending stream, an extraordinarily detailed Late Saalian, Eemian and Weichselian loess sequence could be reconstructed. The Veldwezelt series furnished important pedological, sedimentological, faunal, tephrochronological and cryogenic data, on the basis of which palaeoenvironmental conclusions could be drawn and six types of pedo-sedimentological cycles distinguished. A stratigraphical overview was obtained by correlating the Veldwezelt section with other west European loess frameworks and tephra sequences; the sedimentary series at Harmignies (Mons Basin, southern Belgium) and the Greenland GRIP ice core.

Abstract. In the coal mining districts of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, we identified 662 previously unidentified depressions at the land surface using LIDAR data. Their density decreases westwards along with deepening of the Carboniferous coal layers, while not changing in dimensions. The timing of their formation based on historical maps and landowner reports, suggests that they mostly formed during the period 1920–1970, the peak of mining activity. Based on their position, density and age, we link the formation of depressions to the coal-mining activities in South Limburg, Germany and Belgium. Our working hypothesis tentatively explains the origin, mechanism of formation and timing of these local subsidence features.

Introduction: The primary care system in Flanders (Belgium) was substantially reoriented and restructured. At local level Primary Care Zones (PCZs) were installed to support better coordination and connect care and welfare organizations with local authorities. The province of Limburg counts 8 active PCZs and is one of the five provinces of Flanders. The province boasts an interesting mining history, forests and historic towns. Collaboration and exchange between primary care actors and knowledge institutions (universities of applied sciences and universities) offers opportunities to translate and implement evidence-based concepts and innovations in the sector. Vice versa, the sector's practical knowledge feeds scientific research and education in the knowledge institutions. Description: Limburg has a well-established tradition of collaboration between the healthcare and welfare sector and the knowledge institutions (Hasselt University and University Colleges PXL and UCLL). The PCZs and knowledge institutions aim to further strengthen this existing collaboration and embed it in the Health Campus Limburg (as a tangible meeting ground for primary care in Limburg). This creates a unique partnership between practice (healthcare & welfare), knowledge (research and education) and campus development (innovation ecosystem). The initiative - called 'CELL' was launched on October 5th of 2022 in Hasselt. A charter was signed by 17 Limburg organizations. In addition to 6 PCZs, the 3 knowledge institutions and Health Campus Limburg, the 2 Limburg hospital networks (South-West and North-East Limburg), the 3 mental healthcare networks (Reling, Noolim, Ligant), the palliative care network (Pallion) and the Logo Limburg (prevention network) also joined. The 3 knowledge institutes will collaborate intensively within the CELL initiative in the coming years to strengthen primary care in Limburg. CELL aims to facilitate integrated care at a regional level through innovation processes and projects. Limburg can act as a testing ground (Living Lab) for Flanders to test, monitor and implement innovations in the fields of population management, digitization, community-oriented care, etc. Discussion: The CELL initiative is embedded in the Hasselt University Fund and together with the partner organizations the first 2 years of funding is insured. At this point the governance structure is realized and the PCZs performed a needs assessment to establish their annual action plan. CELL will identify the main common denominators in order to accomplish joint initiatives. CELL will not operate parallel to the PZCs, but act as a supportive and academic umbrella. CELL is open to work with all organizations in- and outside the region, that share the same goals. It strives towards a good cooperation and exchange with the Flemish government and its organizations (including the Flemish Institute for Primary Care, VIVEL). Conclusion: The interaction between the PCZs themselves and the collaboration with knowledge institutions thus contribute to the further development of high-quality integrated care and welfare and offers opportunities to translate and implement new concepts and (digital) innovations in the sector. This directly benefits citizens and patients in the province of Limburg.

Belgium is a geographically small country bordered by The Netherlands, France, Germany, and Luxembourg, with intense transborder mobility, defined as mobility in the border regions with neighboring countries. It is therefore of interest to examine how the 14-day COVID-19 confirmed case incidence in the border regions is influenced by that of the adjacent regions in the neighboring countries and thus, whether and how it differs from that in the adjacent non-border regions within Belgium. To this end, the 14-day COVID-19 confirmed case incidence is studied at the level of Belgian provinces, well-defined border areas within Belgium, and adjacent regions in the neighboring countries. Auxiliary information encompasses work-related border traffic, travel rates, the proportion of people with a different nationality, the stringency index of the non-pharmaceutical interventions, and the degree of urbanization at the level of the municipality. Especially in transnational urbanized areas such as between the Belgian and Dutch provinces of Limburg and between the Belgian province of Antwerp and the Dutch province of North Brabant, the impact on incidence is visible, at least at some points in time, especially when the national incidences differ between neighboring countries. In contrast, the intra-Belgian language border regions show very little transborder impact on the incidence curves, except around the Brussels capital region, leading to various periods where the incidences are very different in the Dutch-speaking north and the French-speaking south of Belgium. Our findings suggest that while travel restrictions may be needed at some points during a pandemic, a more fine-grained approach than merely closing national borders may be considered. At the same time, in border regions with considerable transborder mobility, it is recommended to coordinate the non-pharmaceutical interventions between the authorities of the various countries overlapping with the border region. While this seems logical, there are clear counterexamples, e.g., where non-essential shops, restaurants, and bars are closed in one country but not in the neighboring country.

Abstract. In recent decades, large wildfires have inflicted considerable damage on valuable Natura 2000 regions in Belgium. Despite these events and the general perception that global change will exacerbate wildfire prevalence, this has not been studied yet in the Belgian context. Therefore, the national government initiated the national action plan on wildfires in order to evaluate the wildfire risk, on the one hand, and the materials, procedures, and training of fire services, on the other hand. This study focuses on the spatial distribution of the ignition probability, a component of the wildfire risk framework. In a first stage, we compile a historical wildfire database using (i) newspaper articles between 1994 and 2016 and (ii) a list of wildfire interventions between 2010 and 2013, provided by the government. In a second stage, we use a straightforward method relying on Bayes' rule and a limited number of covariates to calculate the ignition probability. It appears that most wildfire-prone areas in Belgium are located in heathland where military exercises are held. The provinces that have the largest relative areas with a high or very high wildfire risk are Limburg and Antwerp. Our study also revealed that most wildfire ignitions in Belgium are caused by humans (both arson and negligence) and that natural causes such as lightning are rather scarce. Wildfire prevention can be improved by (i) excluding military activity in fire-prone areas during the fire season, (ii) improving collaboration with foreign emergency services, (iii) concentrating the dedicated resources in the areas that display the highest ignition probabilities, (iv) improving fire detection methods, and (v) raising more awareness among the public.

Both partially articulated specimens and dissociated marginal ossicles form the basis for erection of two new species of Late Cretaceous goniasterids from the Mons and Liège-Limburg basins (Belgium) and the Hannover area (Germany). Chomataster breizh sp. nov., which recalls the type species, Chomataster acules Spencer, 1913, but differs in several respects, is based on a partial external mould of the marginal frame of disc and arms in flint (upper Campanian Spiennes Chalk Formation; Mons Basin), as well as on a more or less complete individual, preserving small, spherical spines and granules and encased in a flint nodule from the upper Maastrichtian Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation; Liège-Limburg Basin). In Ch. breizh sp. nov., supero- and inferomarginals bear close-set granule pits, of varying sizes, as well as bivalved alveolar scars of pedicellariae; median superomarginals and all inferomarginals lack large, crater-shaped spine pits – such are found only in the disc/arm transition and along the arms. Dissociated supero- and inferomarginal ossicles from the lower and upper Campanian of the Hannover area and the upper Campanian of northeast Belgium, previously recorded either as indeterminate astropectinids or as Nymphaster obtusus (Forbes, 1848) var. nov. and as Nymphaster sp., respectively, here are assigned to Nymphaster mudzborgh sp. nov. This species is characterised by a row of 3–5 large spine pits on the aboral and lateral surfaces of superomarginals; inferomarginals have an angular profile and a close cover of granule pits. Nymphaster tethysiensis Villier, 2001, from the upper Campanian of Landes (southwest France; Villier and Odin, 2001) appears best accommodated in Chomataster as well, because in the arm superomarginals alternate rather than meet over the mid-radial line.

AbstractThe origin of a peculiar type of silicified limestone with nodular flints used in parish churches at Sluizen and Vreren, south of Tongeren (province of Limburg, Belgium), has now been elucidated by the discovery of the same rock type in its natural setting, namely the silicified top of the Cretaceous which underlies Clay-with-flints (‘flint eluvium’) and Oligocene sands in a disused quarry at Elst, municipality of Riemst (Limburg, Belgium). Co-operation between professional geologists and amateur palaeontologists has allowed to characterise this rock type, here referred to as ‘Elst tauw’, both petrographically and palaeontologically. The rich echinoid fauna has also been assessed, on the basis of a comparison with assemblages from the Clay-with-flints at Halembaye (Haccourt/Lixhe, province of Liège, Belgium) and at Zichen-Eben Emael in the Hesbaye region. P.J. Felder's ecozones, based on bioclast assemblages, substantiated by analyses of petrographical biofacies features of the original calcarenite, has allowed lithostratigraphic correlation of the ‘Elst tauw’ with the ‘Roosburg block’, which is a variety of ‘Maastricht stone’. Both methods indicate that the ‘Elst tauw’ developed in beds that can be assigned to the condensed Valkenburg-Schiepersberg interval of the lower Maastricht Formation. Petrographical analysis has shown the ‘Elst tauw’ to be quite distinctive; in addition, its natural occurrence at the Elst quarry matches the building stone records in rock type. The latter stem from the same small area, situated southwest of Maastricht. The major steps in its diagenetic history could be reconstructed, starting with pervasive pyritisation of the calcareous allochems, followed by silicification of the grains and pore spaces (different silica cements that became partially recrystallised), completed by oxidation of pyrite with transformation into limonite and, finally, dissolution of the non-pyritised or partially pyritised skeletal allochems creating a mouldic porosity. Silicification probably was achieved prior to the Oligocene. This particular mode of formation has generated a discussion on the proper use of the vernacular term ‘tauw’, a term used in a different sense by the industry, stratigraphers and students of building stones.

The Hoge Kempen rural industrial transition landscape: a layered landscape of Outstanding Universal Value? Up until the beginning of the 20th century, the eastern part of the Belgian province of Limburg was a sparsely populated and not very productive part of the country. The dominating heathland was maintained with sheep, which were an essential part of a small-scale extensive farming system. This all changed when coal was discovered in 1901. Seven large coalmines were established in a few decades, each one employing thousands of coal-miners. This also meant that entire new garden cities were built, to house the coal-miners and their families. The confrontation between the small-scale traditional land-use and the new large-scale industrial developments defines the landscape up to today. The scale and the force of the turnover are considered unprecedented for Western Europe, which is why it is being presented by Belgium for inclusion in the World Heritage List.

Motivation is of two types: intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic motivation involves someone being interested in what he/she performs and in the practice process itself. Extrinsic motivation is related to individuals who engage in practice because it is a means to an end, relatively separated from the content and subject of practice. Aim of article – to compare practice and motivation for physical activity among Finnish, Portuguese, Lithuanian and Belgian students. The comparative analysis was performed while participating and doing a research in a EU project „Villages on the Move Network“ (2018 – 2651 / 001 – 001). Five institutions from four European countries were involved in the project: South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (Xamk) and Southern Savo Sports Federation (ESLi) from Finland, University College Limburg – Leuven from Belgium, Kaunas University of Applied Sciences/Kauno kolegija from Lithuania and School of Technology and Management and School of Education and Social Sciences – Polytechnic of Leiria from Portugal. Methods of the research: for the study a structured questionnaire was composed and circulated by using online survey. 843 students from four EU countries (Finland, Portugal, Lithuania and Belgium) participated in the study. Results. Most students walk 5.001 to 10.000 steps a day. Finnish and Belgian students take the most steps per day, Portuguese and Lithuanian students take the least steps per day. The most popular form of physical activity among students are walking, cycling or running. Finnish students, more than students from other countries, practice the following forms of physical activity: bicycle, gym, gymnastics, yoga / Pilates, Nordic walking, ultimate sport. Dancing is more popular among Lithuanian students, swimming – among Belgian and tennis – among Portuguese students. Attitudes towards physical activity motivation were found to be most expressed by Portuguese students. It was found that the greater the motivation for physical activity, the more physically active students are in choosing different forms of physical activity.

AbstractIn the type area of the Maastrichtian Stage (northeast Belgium, southeast Netherlands), two species of the rare hemiasterid echinoid genus Leymeriaster were known to date. Here we describe a third, L. campestris sp. nov., from the so-called ‘Laagje van Müller’ (Gemmenich Member, Vaals Formation) at Vaals-Eschberg, southern Limburg (the Netherlands), which is of early Campanian age. It differs from its late Maastrichtian congeners in the area, L. maestrichtensis and L. eluvialis, in that the pore pairs in the frontal groove of ambulacrum III are not in small depressions and the adjacent interambulacral margins are not thickened, raised and/or overhanging. It differs from L. maestrichtensis by the lack of a clear notch in the ambitus in ambulacrum III, and from L. eluvialis in the presence of a distinctly longer groove in ambulacrum III. Leymeriaster campestris sp. nov. is the first undoubted species of Campanian Leymeriaster known from northwest Europe.

AbstractThe Rupel Clay member in the Netherlands largely corresponds to the Boom Formation in Belgium, and this marine, clay-rich deposit is a potential candidate to host radioactive waste disposal facilities. Prediction of the speciation of radionuclides in Rupel Clay pore water and their retardation by interactions with Rupel Clay components requires knowledge about the composition of Rupel Clay pore water, the inventory of reactive solids and understanding of interactions between Rupel Clay and pore water. Here, we studied Rupel Clay material which was obtained from cores collected in the province of Zeeland, the Netherlands, and from drilling cuttings retrieved from a drilling in the province of Limburg, the Netherlands. Pore water was obtained by mechanical squeezing of Rupel Clay material from Zeeland. Additionally, anaerobic dilution experiments were performed in which the clay material was suspended with demineralised water or a 0.1M NaHCO3solution. Solid-phase characterisation included determination of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur contents, measurement of cation exchange capacity (CEC) and sequential extraction of iron phases. In contrast to the pore water in Belgian Boom Clay, pore water collected from the location in Zeeland has a higher salinity, with chloride concentrations corresponding to 70–96% of those in seawater. The high chloride concentrations most likely result from the intrusion of ions from saline waters above the Rupel Clay in Zeeland. Cation exchange during salinisation might account for the observed deficit of marine cations (Na, K, Mg) and excess of Ca concentrations, in comparison with seawater. The measured CEC values at both locations in the Netherlands vary between 7 and 35 meq(100g)−1and are, for most samples, in the range reported for Boom Clay in Belgium (7–30meq(100g)−1).Pore water and solid-phase composition indicate that Rupel Clay from Zeeland has been affected by oxidation of pyrite or other Fe(II)-containing solids. When coupled to the dissolution of calcium carbonates, oxidation of pyrite can account for the elevated sulphate and calcium concentrations measured in some of the pore waters. The relatively low concentrations of pyrite, organic carbon and calcite in the Rupel Clay in Zeeland, in comparison to Limburg, might be an indicator for an oxidation event. Higher contents of dithionite-extractable Fe in Rupel Clay in Zeeland (0.7–2.6mg Fe / g clay) than in Limburg (0.4–0.5mg Fe / g clay) might also be a consequence of the oxidation of Fe(II) minerals. Oxidation in the past could have accompanied partial erosion of Rupel Clay in Zeeland before deposition of the Breda Formation. However, indications are given that oxidation occurred in some of the pore waters after sampling and that partial oxidation of the cores during storage cannot be excluded. Results from dilution experiments substantiate the influence of equilibration with calcium carbonates on pore water composition. Furthermore, removal of dissolved sulphate upon interaction with Rupel Clay has been observed in some dilution experiments, possibly involving microbial sulphate reduction.

Each society has myths about the successful adaptation of former migrants. Historians need to deconstruct these myths by dealing with the imagined boundaries between “indigenous” and “foreign” people that give way to them. This essay does so by comparing how children of Polish interwar immigrants and children of Italian postwar immigrants came to be seen as insiders in the Belgian Limburg mining region. Oral testimonies, associational records, and population data reveal that Poles achieved the status of industrious, adapted people around 1960, due to the equal promotion of Polish and indigenous miners' sons in the mines and to the labour migration regime which constructed Italians as unskilled outsiders. Around 1980, the industrial recession caused unemployment among young Italians. However, migration politics has, since the recession, primarily focused on culture. Moreover, European legislation constructed foreignness as non-European. Consequently, it is not class, but European culture which has turned Italians into “integrated” people.

Included are specimens of Gastrochaenolites dijugus Kelly & Bromley, showing different modes of formation of the figure-of-eight aperture, either as part of the lining, incorporating the substrate or both. Gastrochaenolites lapidicus Kelly & Bromley was produced by the gastrochaenid bivalve Gastrochaena, whereas G. orbicularis Kelly & Bromley is the trace of Jouannetia supracretacea (De Ryckholt). Bioglyph-like infills of G. orbicularis and G. torpedo Kelly & Bromley rather represent external moulds of the producing bivalves; they are termed pseudobioglyphs herein. Teredolites longissimus is preserved as clusters of in situ, parallel to sub-parallel tubes, although the woody substrate has decayed, and disarticulated fragments of calcareous tubes have been released from rotten wood. The latter include some specimens filled by flint and show good three-dimensional preservation. Some notes on the taxonomy of the producing bivalve taxa are added.

Abstract Dialect Death in the Low Countries The death of Dutch dialects has been anticipated on various occasions in the past, a prediction that had not been borne out until the end of the twentieth century. Reliable figures about the state of autochthonous language diversity are surprisingly scarce. Lumping together and harmonizing figures from long term studies on dialect competences of students and schoolchildren from Belgium and the Netherlands, one can observe a gradual decline in the Netherlands over the 20th century and a more rapid decline in Flanders since the sixties, both ultimately heading towards (nearly) ‘zero’ for children born in 2020. Drastic reduction of linguistic diversity turns out not to be a privilege of the Amazonas or Papua New Guinea. The linguistic map of the Dutch speaking areas is filled with Randstad-oriented speech in the Netherlands, an emerging Tussentaal (‘In-between-language’) in Flanders and pockets of resistance of traditional vernaculars in Fryslân and Dutch Limburg, as well as some incidental communities in a few villages around the country.

Podichnus cf. centrifugalis Bromley & Surlyk occurs both on echinocorythid echinoid tests and guards of belemnitellid coleoids; two out of seven specimens display radial discontinuous channels, indicative of the extreme penetration of filaments from the attached brachiopod's pedicle. Burrows packed with bioclastic debris, particularly primary spines and a few test plates of phymosomatid echinoids, present a systematic conundrum, although appearing comparable to the ichnogenera Nummipera Hölder and Baronichnus Breton in several respects.

Streszczenie:
Isolated valves of proverrucid cirripedes (Thoracica, Verrucomorpha) from upper lower Campanian strata exposed at Jeżówka, near Wolbrom (southern Poland), are shown to be conspecific with the type (and sole) species of the genus Eoverruca, E. hewitti Withers, 1935. This species was first recorded from the upper Santonian (Marsupites testudinarius Zone, Uintacrinus Band in Withers’s terminology) at East Harling, Norfolk and at Wattisfield, Suffolk (eastern England). To our knowledge, there have been no subsequent records of this taxon. In general, proverrucids are rare fossils, with but a handful of species known to date from the upper Turonian to upper Maastrichtian (and possibly lower Paleocene) of northwest Europe (Rügen, Germany; eastern England; the Liège-Limburg Basin in northeast Belgium and southeast Netherlands; present record from southern Poland). In part, this undoubtedly reflects collection failure; because of diminutive size, valves of E. hewitti have probably been frequently overlooked. In addition, the species may have had special ecological requirements, and thus be restricted to particular facies types. The present material originates almost exclusively from glauconite-rich levels just below a hardground, with none or very few other cirripede species associated.

Streszczenie:
This article presents a new relative chronology for the Linearbandkeramik (LBK) of the Meuse basin. Divided into six main phases, the sequence is based on analysis of decorated ceramics from sixteen sites in Belgium and two sites in Holland. Eleven of the Belgian sites are located in Hesbaye, the province with the densest LBK settlement. The other five sites form an outlying group in Hainaut, a little over 100 km to the west. The two Dutch sites are located in southern Limburg, about 50 km north-east of Hesbaye. Fine-ware ceramics were coded for rim, main and intermediate decoration motifs, employing a classification system previously developed in work on the LBK in Lorraine, with particular attention paid to the various techniques used for impressed decoration. The new Meuse basin sequence was established using 165 assemblages containing at least eight decoration motifs, representing a total of 5 101 coded motifs. In a majority of cases, these assemblages were formed by grouping ceramics from lateral pits of houses. Correspondence analysis and hierarchical clustering were used to seriate the assemblages and to define phases and sub-phases. By comparing quantitative trends in decoration motifs, the new Meuse chronology can be synchronized with the Langweiler (Aldenhoven plateau), Lorraine and Seine basin LBK sequences, not only enabling a finer characterization of each regional style but also enhancing the view of interactions between the different groups in the study zone. During the early LBK, the period that sees the first settlements in Hesbaye and north Lorraine, the Flomborn style prevails throughout the Rhine basin. When this cultural entity breaks down, decoration evolves in each region in a different manner. In the middle LBK, the Langweiler area, Dutch Limburg and Belgium form a coherent complex, termed the Rhine-Meuse style, characterized by bands delimited by incised lines and filled with rows of point impressions, which is the majority decoration. In the Moselle basin, as in southern Hessia, the Main style prevails, predominately with bands filled with transverse, crossed or longitudinal incised lines, while in the Seine basin the Champagne region is closely linked in stylistic terms to southern Alsace. The late LBK sees further regional differences, notably with the appearance of the Leihgestern style on the upper course of the Lahn, in central Hessia, and the emergence of the Cologne style in the lower Rhine. The Belgian LBK remains relatively unaffected by these processes and maintains its originality by developing the excessively broad curvilinear motifs, composed of bands filled with incised lines or with multiple-tooth (three or more teeth) comb impressions. These motifs characterize the Omalian style. In north Lorraine, the Main style remains important but the region is now split into two, with on the right bank of the Moselle a strong presence of the Oberrhein-Pfalz style, whose epicentre lies in the Palatinate, and on the left bank a predominance of Omalian influences. These favoured stylistic relations are also reflected by the circulation of lithic raw materials : on the middle and lower course of the Moselle, most of the flint tool-kit is made from blades in Maastrichtian and Campanian flint, imported from the Meuse basin as semi-finished products. In return, one finds in Hainaut, on the site of Blicquy “ Petite Rosière”, Moselle-type motifs in noticeably higher numbers than attested elsewhere in Belgium. In the same period, on the upper course of the Moselle, the LBK of south Lorraine is linked to northern Alsace, while the Champagne LBK maintains its preferential relations with southern Alsace. Throughout the late LBK, there is only limited interaction and exchange between these two groups and the Meuse, lower Rhine and middle Moselle. In the final LBK, the situation is more difficult to assess because the documentation varies in quality from one region to another. At this time, the Langweiler area is apparently abandoned by the LBK, while the Omalian-style LBK still flourishes in Hesbaye and to a lesser extent in Hainaut. On the middle course of the Rhine, new cultural entities appear, with the emergence of the Hinkelstein group on the Neckar and in the northern Palatinate, and the development of the Plaidt style on the lower course of the Moselle, from the Rhine confluence up to Luxembourg. A particular style appears in north Lorraine, derived from the Oberrhein-Pfalz style, while in south Lorraine another original style develops, combining elements from southern and northern Alsace as well as from north Lorraine. In the Seine basin, the LBK spreads northwards and westwards out of Champagne, settling the middle and lower courses of the Aisne and Yonne. Here again, one sees the formation of an original style, characterized by T motifs and predominant use of two-or threetoothed combs, at a time when combs with four or more teeth are more frequently used on the Meuse. At this stage, there is virtually no exchange between the Meuse and the Seine, while the middle Moselle distances itself stylistically from the Omalian but still imports large numbers of blades in Campanian flint from Hesbaye. The preferential relations maintained between Belgium and north Lorraine during the LBK apparently cease in the terminal LBK stage. At this time, the Blicquy-Villeneuve-Saint-Germain (BVSG) culture appears in the Seine basin and in Belgium, possibly slightly earlier in Hainaut than in Hesbaye. The emergence and subsequent development of this new stylistic entity represents a significant change, because there is relatively little evidence for contacts between Belgium and the Seine basin during the previous LBK phases. In the terminal LBK, the Moselle basin finds a new supply of raw material in the Secondary and Tertiary flint of Champagne. The early BVSG site of Reims-Tinqueux shows that this “ economic” exchange is also accompanied by some stylistic interaction.
