Streszczenie:
Canadian intellectual Marshall McLuhan (1911--1980) left a controversial legacy. This dissertation addresses the four chief paradoxes that his work poses for contemporary commentators: the core meaning of his texts; the tradition in which his contribution now seems most intelligible; the divergent response to his work; and the enduring yet fragmentary impact of his contribution to popular and academic life. Taking a rhetoric of inquiry approach, modified by Gerald Holton's writing in the history of science, this reappraisal argues for McLuhan's significance as a theorist of communications as techno-cultural transformation or "mediamorphosis"; for his seminal role within the Toronto School of Communications; and for his inspiring relevance within the interdiscipline of communications, despite the forging of a negative academic consensus against his work in the early 1970s. McLuhan united the ancient arts of grammar and rhetoric into a techno-cultural hermeneutics that constitutes an unexhausted approach to the study of the impacts of media and technologies on sensibilities, literacies and culture.

Streszczenie:
Regular physical activity is recommended in healthy pregnancies and has been shown to mitigate adverse pregnancy outcomes. Despite the benefits, many women do not adhere to the recommendations due to concerns of exercise-induced heat stress and the dangers it could pose to the developing fetus. While the majority of the concerns raised are not grounded in evidence, currently there are no studies that directly examine the isolated influence of pregnancy on metabolic heat production resulting from physical activity. Additionally, despite the prevalent use of psycho-physical tools in clinical settings, there is a scarcity of literature exploring the relationship between the physiological and perceptual measures of exercise-induced heat strain in the pregnant population. Therefore, objective one of this thesis was to quantify the heat production resulting from light to moderate physical activity (intensities recommended during pregnancy) throughout gestation. Secondly, in objective two, physiological and perceptual measures of thermal strain were compared and assessed throughout pregnancy. In evaluating the change in heat production resulting from exercise (objective one), 10 non-pregnant control (30±1 yrs; BMI=22.3±0.8 kg/m2) and 10 pregnant (32±1 yrs; pre-pregnancy BMI=22.8±0.8 kg/m2) women performed a seven stage submaximal walking test in a thermal controlled chamber (23ºC). Testing was performed during their 1st (T1, 12-16 wks), 2nd (T2, 24-28 wks) and 3rd (T3, 34-38 wks) trimester of pregnancy while metabolic heat production was measured through indirect calorimetry. To assess the changes in thermal and perceptual strain (objective two), 16 non-pregnant control (32±1 yrs; BMI=22.7±0.7 kg/m2), and 20 pregnant (32±1; pre-pregnancy BMI=23.2±0.6 kg/m2) women underwent a graded walking exercise protocol at T2 and T3. Over the course of this test, heart rate, tympanic temperature (Ttymp), skin temperature (Tskin), rate of perceived exertion (RPE, 20-point scale) and thermal sensation (9-point scale) were assessed. Findings from this thesis show that for the same given progressive exercise test, women in T1 experienced similar metabolic heat production to their non-pregnant counterparts. However, as pregnancy progressed, women exhibited on average, a 7-8% increase in heat production per trimester of pregnancy that can be accounted for by weight gain. Further, at baseline conditions, heart rate responses increased with pregnancy, while Ttymp remained unchanged and Tskin decreased. In response to exercise, the magnitude of change in heart rate, Ttymp and Tskin did not differ between gestational conditions. Finally, a strong correlation was identified between heart rate and RPE throughout pregnancy, while thermal sensation only directly correlated with Ttymp and not Tskin. Overall, the present findings suggest that while the same progressive exercise test results in greater levels of heat production as pregnancy progresses, this is not observed in physiological or perceptual measures of heat strain. Rather, findings of this thesis support the notion of improved thermoregulatory responses to account for the increase in metabolic heat production. Moreover, the present thesis provides support for the use of the RPE and thermal sensation scales as effective psycho-physical tools in the pregnant population under conditions of light to moderate exercise in normothermic conditions.

Streszczenie:
The original objectives were: A. To determine the critical embryonic age for monochromatic green light stimulation. B. To follow the ontogeny of embryos exposed to monochromatic green light vs. darkness. C. To investigate the effects of monochromatic green light illumination on myoblast and fiber development in the embryo. D. To investigate the stimulatory effect of light combinations during embryo and post-hatch periods on growth and meat production. E. To evaluate the direct effect of monochromatic green light on cultured embryonic and adult myoblasts. The overall purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of monochromatic light stimuli during incubation period of broilers on muscle development and satellite cell myogenesis. Based on previous studies (Halevy et al., 1998; Rozenboim et al., 1999) that demonstrated the positive effects of green-light illumination on body and muscle growth, we hypothesized that monochromatic light illumination accelerates embryo and muscle development and subsequently enhances muscle growth and meat production. Thus, further decreases management costs. Under the cooperation of the laboratories at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and University of Washington we have conducted the following: 1. We have established the critical stage for exposure to green monochromatic light which has the maximal effect on body and muscle growth (Objective A). We report that embryonic day 5 is optimal for starting illumination. The optimal regime of lighting that will eliminate possible heat effects was evaluated by monitoring egg core temperature at various illumination periods. We found that intermitted lighting (15 min. on; 15 min. off) is optimal to avoid heat effects. 2. We have evaluated in detail gross changes in embryo development profile associated to green light stimuli vs. darkness. In addition, we have investigated the stimulatory effect of light combinations during embryo and post-hatch periods on body and muscle growth (Objective B,D). 3. We have studied the expression profile of muscle regulatory proteins during chicken muscle cell differentiation in cultures using newly developed antibodies. This study paved the way for analyzing the expression of these proteins in our photo stimulation experiments (Objective C). 4. We have studied the pattern ofPax7 expression during myogenesis in the posthatch chicken. Experimental chick pectoralis muscles as well adult myoblast cultures were used in this study and the results led us to propose a novel model for satellite cell differentiation and renewal. 5. The effects of monochromatic green light illumination during embryogenesis have been studied. These studies focused on fetal myoblast and satellite cell proliferation and differentiation at pre- and posthatch periods and on the effects on the expression of muscle regulatory proteins which are involved in these processes. In addition, we have analyzed the effect of photo stimulation in the embryo on myofiber development at early posthatch (Objective C). 6. In follow the reviewers' comments we have not conducted Objective E. The information gathered from these studies is of utmost importance both, for understanding the molecular basis of muscle development in the posthatch chicks and for applied approach for future broiler management. Therefore, the information could be beneficial to agriculture in the short term on the one hand and to future studies on chick muscle development in the embryo and posthatch on the other hand.

Johra, Hicham. Performance overview of caloric heat pumps: magnetocaloric, elastocaloric, electrocaloric and barocaloric systems. Department of the Built Environment, Aalborg University, styczeń 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.54337/aau467469997.

Streszczenie:
Heat pumps are an excellent solution to supply heating and cooling for indoor space conditioning and domestic hot water production. Conventional heat pumps are typically electrically driven and operate with a vapour-compression thermodynamic cycle of refrigerant fluid to transfer heat from a cold source to a warmer sink. This mature technology is cost-effective and achieves appreciable coefficients of performance (COP). The heat pump market demand is driven up by the urge to improve the energy efficiency of building heating systems coupled with the increase of global cooling needs for air-conditioning. Unfortunately, the refrigerants used in current conventional heat pumps can have a large greenhouse or ozone-depletion effect. Alternative gaseous refrigerants have been identified but they present some issues regarding toxicity, flammability, explosivity, low energy efficiency or high cost. However, several non-vapour-compression heat pump technologies have been invented and could be promising alternatives to conventional systems, with potential for higher COP and without the aforementioned refrigerant drawbacks. Among those, the systems based on the so-called “caloric effects” of solid-state refrigerants are gaining large attention. These caloric effects are characterized by a phase transition varying entropy in the material, resulting in a large adiabatic temperature change. This phase transition is induced by a variation of a specific external field applied to the solid refrigerant. Therefore, the magnetocaloric, elastocaloric, electrocaloric and barocaloric effects are adiabatic temperature changes in specific materials when varying the magnetic field, uniaxial mechanical stress, electrical field or hydrostatic pressure, respectively. Heat pump cycle can be built from these caloric effects and several heating/cooling prototypes were developed and tested over the last few decades. Although not a mature technology yet, some of these caloric systems are well suited to become new efficient and sustainable solutions for indoor space conditioning and domestic hot water production. This technical report (and the paper to which this report is supplementary materials) aims to raise awareness in the building community about these innovative caloric systems. It sheds some light on the recent progress in that field and compares the performance of caloric systems with that of conventional vapour-compression heat pumps for building applications.

Streszczenie:
Infrared laser as a heat source could induce gene expression by activating heat promoter genes in Caenorhabditis elegans, as previously reported. In this study, we innovatively used a 266-nm laser to irradiate C. elegans for only one second and observed a significant inhibition of the overall number of eggs laid (P < 0.0001) and the first day egg laying (P=0.005). This is the first study to establish how light with a wavelength of 266-nm can influence a life activity such as laying eggs in C. elegans.

Streszczenie:
The major goal of the proposed research was to study the role of a 70-kDa heat shock cognate protein from chloroplasts (ct-HSP70) in the assembly of chlorophyll-protein complexes. The latters are mostly important in allowing photosynthesis to occur. Photosynthesis is at the heart of crop productivity and the knowledge of the biogenesis of the photosynthetic apparatus is essential to manipulate the efficiency of photosynthesis. The characterization of the function of the ct-HSP70 was planned to be studied in vitro by assaying its capability to physically interact with the thylakoid proteins and to assist their assembly into thylakoid membranes. We planned to identify regions in the light-harvesting complex protein (LHCP) that interact with the ct-HSP70 and characterize the interaction between them. We also intended to isolate cDNA clones encoding ct-HSP70, sequence them, express one of them in E. coli and use the purified protein for functional assays. The research in this BARD proposal aimed at providing insights and aid in understanding the mechanism by which plants may respond to the heat stress. Since plants often experience increased temperatures.
