Streszczenie:
Carrying, lifting, and turning chairs improve learning activities in schools, which leads to higher quality education. However, it has been shown that elementary school chairs in Indonesia are too heavy for children aged 6 to 9 to easily lift and carry. The present study aimed to investigate children’s methods of carrying chairs as well as lifting and turning them onto desks. Forty-two children (aged 6-9), including 17 Indonesians (6 boys, 11 girls) and 25 Japanese (12 boys, 13 girls), participated in the study. The experiment used three elementary school chairs (one Indonesian, two Japanese) and two desk types (standard and tall). The most popular method for carrying a chair was to carry it in front of the body with the chair in a lateral position (75%). In all carrying methods, participants showed a preference for grasping two particular points to hold the chair. Children lifted and turned chairs most successfully when they used this popular grasping pattern. The carrying method and the popular grasping pattern for carrying, lifting, and turning chairs need to be considered when redesigning heavy Indonesian elementary school chairs to improve the ease of transport without decreasing the weight.

Over the past ten years, there has been extensive work performed on the development of guidelines for manual material handling tasks both within individual companies and within governmental agencies. However, these guidelines address only individual, one-person lifting tasks. In both manufacturing and service industries, there are many team lifting tasks, such as furniture moving and at loading docks. This paper presents the results of a study that used psychophysical methods to investigate lifting tasks that require two workers. In addition to simple lifting tasks, the study also compared one and two-person carrying tasks. The results of the study indicate that subjects' judgments of their lifting capability are significantly greater for the two-person lifts than for the individual lifts. The same relationship was observed for the carrying tasks. These results and conclusions are important to consider when it is necessary to extrapolate from the conditions used in the development of manual material handling guidelines to other situations such as team lift carrying tasks.

There are main activities of the worker in UD Askan such as splitting the fish, carrying, and lifting the tubs. Work activities are done manually and the production process continually undergoes. The frequency of activity (15 cycles) in a day causes the risk of fatigue, injury, and Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). Evaluation of the work posture of four workers by Ovako Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) and Job Strain Index (JSI) methods showed high risk in the process of lifting and carrying a tank. The previous posture caused the worker to bend forward, both legs standing or squatting with both knees, and walk by carrying a tub. The results recommend solving soonest due to the danger to the musculoskeletal. The recommendation shows that lifting methods are required and the design of lifting and transporting equipment is needed. The evaluation posture by OWAS show that the process of carrying a tank is 3 level (immediate repair because it is harmful to the musculoskeletal), and after improvement, it is 1 level (not harmful to the musculoskeletal). Then, JSI indicates any improvement from the 3 levels (posing a hazard) to level 1 (safe work).

Transporting patients down stairs by carrying is associated with a particularly high fall risk for patients and the occurrence of back pain among emergency medical technicians. The present study aimed to verify the effectiveness of the Airstretcher device, which was developed to reduce rescuers’ physical burden when transporting patients by dragging along the floor and down stairs. Forty-one paramedical students used three devices to transport a 65-kg manikin down stairs from the 3rd to the 1st floor. To verify the physical burden while carrying the stretchers, ratings of perceived exertion were measured using the Borg CR10 scale immediately after the task. Mean Borg CR10 scores (standard deviation) were 3.6 (1.7), 4.1 (1.8), 5.6 (2.4), and 4.2 (1.8) for the Airstretcher with dragging, Airstretcher with lifting, backboard with lifting, and tarpaulin with lifting conditions, respectively (p < 0.01). Multiple comparisons revealed that the Airstretcher with dragging condition was associated with significantly lower Borg CR10 scores compared with the backboard with lifting condition (p < 0.01). When the analysis was divided by handling position, estimated Borg CR10 values (standard error) for head position were 4.4 (1.3), 2.9 (0.9), 3.2 (0.8), and 4.0 (1.1) for the Airstretcher with dragging, Airstretcher with lifting, backboard with lifting, and tarpaulin with lifting conditions, respectively, after adjusting for participant and duration time (F = 1.4, p < 0.25). The estimated Borg CR10 value (standard error) for toe position in the Airstretcher with dragging condition was 2.0 (0.8), and the scores for the side position were 4.9 (0.4), 6.1 (0.3), and 4.7 (0.4) for the Airstretcher with lifting, backboard with lifting, and tarpaulin with lifting conditions, respectively, after adjusting for participant and duration time (F = 3.6, p = 0.02). Transferring a patient down stairs inside a house by dragging using the Airstretcher may reduce the physical burden for rescuers.

Background:Heavy carrying and lifting (HCL) is a common activity among farmers that may be related to health. The aim of this study was to examine HCL as a proxy for occupational physical activity (PA) among farm residents. The secondary objective was to evaluate PA based on HCL.Methods:Data from 21,296 farmers and 30,951 spouses in the Agricultural Health Study examined the relationship between HCL and farm activities and individual/farm characteristics. HCL was categorized as ≥ 1 or < 1 hours per day. The association between HCL and farm activities (15 for farmers; 16 for spouses) and individual/farm characteristics was examined using adjusted logistic regression. To evaluate PA, we created a PA activity index using metabolic equivalents for HCL, and compared PA weekly averages with national guidelines. Results:In adjusted results, most farm activities were significantly associated with HCL. Based on HCL, farmers had a median of 1.5 hours and spouses 0.5 hours of vigorous or muscle-strengthening PA per day. Most farmers (94%) and about 60% of spouses meet or exceed 2008 national guidelines for vigorous or muscle-strengthening PA.Conclusion:Findings suggest the HCL measure may be useful as a PA metric in future studies of occupational PA among farm residents.

Gloves are used at workplaces to protect hands and fingers from potential hazards. Three types of work gloves were assessed in terms of the strength of grip, carrying, and lifting. Thirty adults (14 males and 16 females) joined as human participants. The strength data were measured under bare hand and three gloved conditions. The grip spans in the grip strength measurements included 45 mm, 55 mm, 65 mm, and 75 mm. The carrying strength was measured for both dominant and non-dominant hands under leg straight and semi-squat postural conditions. The lifting strength was measured at a semi-squat posture. The results showed that glove (p < 0.0001), grip span (p = 0.001), gender (p < 0.0001), and handedness (p < 0.0001) all affected grip strength significantly. Wearing the gloves tested in this study led to a decrease of grip strength up to 22.9%, on average, depending on gender, grip span, and hand tested. Wearing the cotton gloves led to a decrease of one-handed carrying strength ranged from 3.5% to 9.7% for female participants. All the participants took advantages in carrying strength when wearing the cut-resistant gloves. The leg lifting strength data indicated that the effects of the gloves were insignificant. The information of this study is beneficial for practitioners in the design of manual materials handling tasks concerning the use of work gloves.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are major contributors to work-related disability and time lost caused by illness. As manual material handlers, mechanics are frequently exposed to the physical risk factors for MSDs. The objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between manual materials handling and snook mital table among mechanics at tyre service center. This study was conducted in Taiping, Perak. There were 239 of mechanics from various workshops participated in these study with mainly lifting/lowering, pushing/pulling, and carrying tasks. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and interview session which are Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) and Snook Table. NMQ was used to evaluate the exposure of the activities and related physical risk factors that had correlated to one of the region's bodies within a 12-month period while Snook is required for evaluation of the maximum acceptable weight for lifting/lowering, pushing/pulling and carrying. In this research, most mechanics have suffered musculoskeletal symptoms in low back, shoulder, and neck pain. According to Snook analysis, most mechanics are at a medium risk of developing musculoskeletal symptoms as a result of their lifting, lowering, and carrying activity. Several definitions of pain showed a strong correlation between Snook assessment and musculoskeletal disorders. Various possible risk factors of manual materials handling activity, notably the lifting floor to knuckle and lowering floor to knuckle, each had a significant impact on the low back while shoulder and neck showed a significant relation between with lifting above shoulder. Therefore, ergonomic awareness between mechanics should be increased in order to reduce the prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms and control the manual materials handling activity. The study will be useful to ergonomists, researchers, consultants, workshop managers, maintenance workers and others concerned with identifying ergonomic risk factor on the workplace.

Abstract Objectives This study compares estimates and determinants of within-individual changes in mobility across surveys of older U.S. adults. Methods Data come from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) study. Measures of mobility comprise self-reported level of difficulty with walking several blocks, going up several flights of stairs, lifting and carrying 10 pounds, and stooping. Predictors include sociodemographic characteristics and indicators of health and health behaviors. We pool the datasets and estimate weighted lagged dependent variable logistic regression models for each activity, assessing cross-study differences using interaction terms between a survey indicator and relevant variables. Results Estimates of declines in mobility differ substantially across surveys for walking, lifting and carrying, and stooping, but there are no between-survey differences in the probability of (not) recovering from a limitation. With the exception of age, determinants of change are similar between studies. For lifting/carrying and stooping, the age-related increase in developing limitations is less steep at younger ages for HRS respondents than MIDUS respondents, but steeper at older ages. Discussion To compare estimates of mobility change across surveys, mobility measures would need to be harmonized. Determinants of mobility change, however, are more comparable.

Streszczenie:
In view of the prominent problem that nonlinear vibration of a belt conveyor can easily occur during the vertical grain-conveyance process due to the coupling effect of airflow clamping and traction of the conveyor belt, which seriously affects the efficiency and stability of conveying materials by the belt conveyor, a method of solving the vibration analysis of the vertical lifting section of the bulk grain belt unloader by using nonlinear vibration is proposed. Firstly, based on the laminated plate theory, the vertical lifting belt and the grain material clamped by the belt are laminated. The nonlinear vibration differential equation of the vertical lifting section of the bulk grain-carrying ship unloader is established by elastic–plastic mechanics, and solved by perturbation theory and Galerkin discrete analysis. The vibration response curve and structural natural frequency of the vertical lifting section of the bulk grain-carrying machine are obtained by numerical solution, and the influence of the volume content of the clamped material on the vibration response and structural natural frequency of the lifting section is analyzed. This study provides theoretical support for the design of pressure-supply parameters, overall structure and operation parameters of the subsequent entrainment ship unloader, promotes the rapid development of the entrainment ship unloader, provides theoretical support for the design, manufacture, later operation, and maintenance of the entrainment ship unloader, and thus provides equipment and technical support for building an efficient and intelligent port.

The purpose of this study was to determine and verify the maximum acceptable load for lifting and carrying (MALL&C) in single- and mixed-gender two-person teams. Participants lifted and carried a box 7.2 meters and placed it on a 132 cm high shelf, at rates of 1 x/min and 4 x/min. All male teams lifted and carried significantly (p<.05) more weight than all female teams or mixed-gender teams, and mixed-gender teams carried more than all female teams (p>.05). Our findings demonstrate that 1) individuals working alone or in teams can accurately estimate their ability to lift and carry loads for an hour, and that 2) when working in pairs, team MAL-L&C are approximately equal to the sum of their individual MAL-L&C. Percentile norms for MAL-L&Cs are provided for male, female, and mixed gender teams.

Since most marine engines are generally very huge and heavy, it is required to keep safety from accidents in dealing them. Several types of lifting lugs have been used to assemble hundred ton–large steel structures and carry the assembled engines. Although the stability evaluation of the lifting lug has therefore been very important for safety, systematic design procedure of the lugs, which includes the structural analysis considering stability, has few reported. This paper describes the three dimensional finite element structural modeling for a lifting lug, the studies for determining the reasonable loading and boundary conditions, and the stability evaluation with the results of structural analyses. Applying integral electromyography (IEMG), we show the results of quantitative suit performance and posture-preserving efficiency. However, for practical use, lifting seems to be one of the most important tasks for users. We improve the forearm so that the muscle suit assists the user in vertical lifting. Sawmill workers in Bangladesh are increasingly at risk of emerging work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs). Their jobs involve awkward manual handling tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling. These are identified as risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders. The aims of this study are to find out the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and assessing the postural risk level among sawmills workers. This cross-sectional study was conducted with 254 workers from 60 sawmills at the southern part of Bangladesh. The overall 70.1% of sawmills workers were suffering musculoskeletal disorders in at least one body part for the last one year. The average Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) score of four main tasks (Pushing, Pulling, Lifting, and Carrying the timber) was 9.25, which is high risk for MSDs symptoms. The main reasons behind these MSDs are lack of knowledge about workplace safety, working postures and the settings of the workplace. We have recommended to the management to apply the NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) lifting and Manual Material handling techniques; arrange OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) ergonomic training to the workers. Also, suggested designing the working table and workplaces in ergonomically to mitigate the musculoskeletal disorders.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the musculoskeletal problems faced by the workers carrying out head lifting at the construction sites and to present a solution for the identified problems. Design/methodology/approach The methodology of the paper is framed in two phases. First, the identification of the problems faced by workers through interviews/questionnaire and second, designing and fabricating a mechanical system to safe guard workers against musculoskeletal disorders. Findings Based upon the interviews and questionnaires, it was ascertained that majority of the workers were subjected to neck pain and low back pain. This was mainly attributed to the lifting of heavy loads on head, sudden and jerky movements and bad postures. Research limitations/implications The developed frame has been appreciated by the Physiotherapists also; however, it still has certain limitations which can be taken as a future scope for the further modification of the frame. The limitations are as follows: the weight of the frame is a limitation, as the worker has to bear this load in addition to the load which is to be lifted. However, this can be dealt with by replacing the material of the frame with lightweight materials such as aluminium alloys, carbon fibres, etc. The continuous wearing of the frame may result in discomfort, as the worker cannot freely roam around. Sweating and etching due to wearing of belt. Worker cannot place the load him/herself on the frame. Stability issues in lifting liquids overhead. Practical implications Findings revealed the bleak possibility of replacing head loading. However, there is an urgent need of developing a cost-effective system which could help workers while carrying out head lifting of loads. Originality/value This work presents an ergonomically designed mechanical frame which will help workers in carrying out head loading without effecting their skull, spine, etc. The system was tested on workers and the results were alarming and the working capacity of the workers was observed to increase with the fabricated frame.

When performing lifting tasks at work, the Lifting Index (LI) is widely used to prevent work-related low-back disorders, but it presents criticalities pertaining to measurement accuracy and precision. Wearable sensor networks, such as sensorized insoles and inertial measurement units, could improve biomechanical risk assessment by enabling the computation of an adaptive LI (aLI) that changes over time in relation to the actual method of carrying out lifting. This study aims to illustrate the concepts and mathematics underlying aLI computation and compare aLI calculations in real-time using wearable sensors and force platforms with the LI estimated with the standard method used by ergonomists and occupational health and safety technicians. To reach this aim, 10 participants performed six lifting tasks under two risk conditions. The results show us that the aLI value rapidly converges towards the reference value in all tasks, suggesting a promising use of adaptive algorithms and instrumental tools for biomechanical risk assessment.

Introduction: Manual lifting and load transfer processes that are not carried out properly will result in over exertion-lifting and carrying, i.e. body tissue damage caused by excessive lifting. One of the work-related diseases caused by this activity is Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), a disorder that occurs in the muscles, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilages, or the intervertebral discs. The study aims to find out the picture of ergonomic risk in manual material handling activity and musculoskeletal complaints. Methods: Data was obtained from two respondents through accidental sampling. The measurement of the lifting index is done with meters and calculated using the formula of the calculation of the lifting index. The instrument for measuring musculoskeletal disorders was the GOTRAK SNI 9011:2021 Questionnaire. Results: Lifting activities performed by the Hand Add section (LI: 3.054-3.228) and Bagging Off (LI: 3.073-3.470) have a Lifting Index value that is in category > 3 so the interpreted activity has a high risk of causing musculoskeletal complaints. Workers who perform manual material handling activities have high complaints of skeletal and muscle disorders in the upper limbs. Conclusion: Manual handling activities performed in the industry have a high risk of causing injury. Workers who perform manual material handling activities are known to have high complaints of muscle and muscle disorders in the upper limbs.

For gas drilling, hole cleaning is a particularly critical problem. When the spiral centralizer is used in the down hole assembly of gas drilling, it will produce a powerful rotational flow which will be bond to have the influence of different level on the hole cleaning. For this matter, this paper has established a three-dimensional fluid dynamics model in the basis of gas-solid two-phase turbulent theory and got its numerical solution by using the finite volume method, therefore making a quantitative evaluation about the ability of cutting-carrying and lifting of the spiral centralizer. The results have shown that the spiral centralizer has the function of cutting-carrying and lifting; part of the rock debris pellet concentrates in the bottom of the blade, above less instead. The numerical calculation method has some guiding significance for spiral centralizer design in gas drilling.

Abstract The frame is an important component for the off-way wide-body mining dump truck. The carrying capacity of the truck is greatly affected by the strength of the frame. The finite element analysis was used to simulate the strength of the frame under the work condition of full load and lifting. The maximum stress of the frame is 214MPa under the full load condition, and the maximum stress of the frame is 459MPa under lifting condition. The upper surface of the frame near the rear axle is the more dangerous section for the frame under the two working conditions. The stiffness of the front leaf spring has very impact to the maximum stress of the frame for both full load condition and lifting condition, but has some impact to the maximum stress near the support of the front leaf spring.

Abstract Thermal effects have been investigated in a porous inclined slider bearing together with the slip boundary conditions. Using Jenkins model, the governing system of equations pertaining to the flow is solved analytically to yield the various bearing characteristics. The expressions for mean temperature, pressure and the lifting force (load carrying capacity) have been derived as a function of slip, magnetic, permeability, material and thermal parameters. Furthermore, the term pertaining to the co-rotational derivative of magnetization is expected to influence the lifting force significantly. Therefore its effect on the bearing characteristics is also considered. The lubricant is assumed to be incompressible, and its viscosity varies exponentially with the temperature. The behavior of mean temperature with other bearing characteristics across the fluid film thickness has also been investigated. The variations in the lifting force and mean temperature w.r.t. various bearing parameters have been analyzed graphically.

Box delivery is a complicated manual material handling task which needs to consider the box weight, delivering speed, stability, and location. This paper presents a subtask-based inverse dynamic optimization formulation for determining the two-dimensional (2D) symmetric optimal box delivery motion. For the subtask-based formulation, the delivery task is divided into five subtasks: lifting, the first transition step, carrying, the second transition step, and unloading. To render a complete delivering task, each subtask is formulated as a separate optimization problem with appropriate boundary conditions. For carrying and lifting subtasks, the cost function is the sum of joint torque squared. In contrast, for transition subtasks, the cost function is the combination of joint discomfort and joint torque squared. Joint angle profiles are validated through experimental results using Pearson’s correlation coefficient (r) and root-mean-square-error (RMSE). Results show that the subtask-based approach is computationally efficient for complex box delivery motion simulation. This research outcome provides a practical guidance to prevent injury risks in joint torque space for workers who deliver heavy objects in their daily jobs.

ObjectiveClinicians need to know whether lumbosacral radiculopathy syndrome (LRS) can be attributed to work. This review describes what work-related risk factors are associated with LRS.MethodsA systematic review was performed in PubMed and Embase. Inclusion criteria were that LRS was diagnosed by a clinician and workers exposed to work-related risk factors were compared to workers less or not exposed. A quality assessment and a meta-analysis were performed, including a dose-response analysis.ResultsThe search resulted in 7,350 references and 24 studies that fulfilled the inclusion criteria: 19 studies were rated as having a high risk of bias and 5 as having a low risk of bias. The median number of LRS patients per study were 209 (interquartile range 124–504) and the total number of participants was 10,142. The meta-analysis revealed significant associations with heavy physically demanding work (odds ratio [OR] 2.03, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.48–2.79), bending or twisting of the trunk (OR 2.43, 95% CI 1.67–3.55), and lifting and carrying in combination with bending or twisting of the trunk (OR 2.84, 95% CI 2.18–3.69). No significant associations were found for professional driving (OR 1.46, 95% CI 0.90–2.35) or sitting (OR 1.08, 95% CI 0.49–2.38). A dose-response relation was present per 5 years of exposure for bending (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.04–1.20), lifting (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.02–1.14) and the combination of bending and lifting (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.01–1.29).ConclusionsModerate to high-quality evidence is available that LRS can be classified as a work-related disease depending on the level of exposure to bending of the trunk or lifting and carrying. Professional driving and sitting were not significantly associated with LRS.

Exoskeletons potentially reduce physical strain on workers. However, studies investigating the long-term effects of exoskeletons in the workplace are rare, not least because demonstrating physical long-term impacts faces several challenges, including the collection of reliable biomechanical data with the exoskeleton. By examining the potential impact of using an exoskeleton on inter-day measurements, we can provide valuable insights into the suitability of long-term studies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the inter-day variation in muscle activity (MA) and kinematics of the trunk and legs during lifting, carrying, walking, and static bending with and without a passive back exoskeleton. The majority of results show no significant differences in inter-day variation. However, we found minor significant unilateral variation in knee and ankle kinematics when using the BSE during the lifting, carrying, and walking tasks, as well as in MA of M. biceps femoris when measuring without the BSE during the lifting tasks. Cohen’s d showed small effect sizes, ranging from -0.0045 ≤ d ≤ 0.384 for all significant p-values. While we classify the observed significant differences as minor, it is still crucial to consider day-to-day variations in long-term studies. However, by implementing high levels of standardization in study designs, including precise exoskeleton fitting, consistent assistance level, familiarization with measurement systems, and standardized working tasks, the impact of the exoskeleton on inter-day measurements can be minimized. Additional field studies are necessary to validate our findings in real work conditions.

Summary Implementing efficient fluid-carrying capacity of drilled cuttings is an essential process for a good drilling program, either for a better rate of penetration (ROP) or a safer drilling operation. In this paper, I present a methodology that is based on the transfer function representation, which can be used to analyze the consumed fluid energy used in lifting the drilled cuttings in vertical wells to estimate the maximum carrying capacity index (CCI), which leads to performance at the desired ROP. The consumed hydrodynamic energy equation has been formulated using a second-order differential equation as a function of the drilling fluid, cuttings properties, and drilling operating parameters. Therefore, it allows an accurate quantitative monitoring of the fluid's CCI, which is the best alternative method to the currently empirical model. Moreover, it determines the perfect hydrodynamic energy required for any designed ROP to prevent excessive or poor hole-cleaning performance.

(1) Background: In the case of quick picking and heavy lifting, the carrying action results in a much more active myoelectric signal in the lower back than in an upright stationary one, and there is a high risk of back muscle injury without proper handling skills and equipment. (2) Methods: To reduce the risk of LBP during manual handing tasks, a hip active exoskeleton is designed to assist human manual lifting. A power control method is introduced into the control loop in the process of assisting human transportation. The power curve imitates the semi-squat movement of the human body as the output power of the hip joint. (3) Results: According to the test, the torque can be output according to the wearer’s movement. During the semi-squat lifting process, the EMG (electromyogram) signal of the vertical spine at L5/S1 was reduced by 30–48% and the metabolic cost of energy was reduced by 18% compared the situation of without EXO. (4) Conclusion: The exoskeleton joint output torque can change in an adaptive manner according to the angular velocity of the wearer’s joint. The exoskeleton can assist the waist muscles and the hip joint in the case of the reciprocating semi-squat lifting movement.

BACKGROUND: Municipal solid waste handlers perform various work activities which may contribute to the onset of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs). This study conducted a postural analysis of these workers and a reference group of hospital general hands in order to identify unsafe working postures requiring correction. METHODS: The Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) methodology was used for postural analysis to 30 municipal solid waste handlers (MSWHs) and a reference group of 30 hospital general hands (HGHs) involved in similar work activities. Field observations and photography were used to collect data. Collected data was analysed using STATA version 13.RESULTS: The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare the two groups. Results showed significant differences (p < 0.05) for lifting, carrying and emptying activities. For both groups, the mean postural scores for pushing, pulling and standing activities were mainly in the low risk category and not statistically significant (p > 0.05).CONCLUSION: Results of the present study show unsafe RULA postural scores to MSWHs with regard to lifting, carrying and emptying of refuse bins. Such scores are suggestive of an elevated risk to developing WRMDs in these workers compared to the reference group.

The results indicate that workers engaged in such highly repetitive and physically demanding tasks operate at work loads that may clearly be considered physically fatiguing and unacceptable by the current physiological design criteria. The workers, however, perceived these exertions to be generally acceptable. The physiological responses of the workers are also compared with previous and recommended physiological design criteria.

Epimeletic behavior toward dead calves has been frequently reported in cetaceans, mostly with females (presumed mothers) showing supportive behaviors such as carrying, lifting, or sinking, often assisted by “escort” individuals. However, information on acoustic production in such contexts is scarce. This report describes two observations of epimeletic behavior toward dead newborns in bottlenose dolphins and associated acoustic production. Data were collected at the Tiber River estuary (Rome, Mediterranean Sea, Italy) with one hydrophone for passive acoustic monitoring and two digital cameras. In both cases, an individual (presumed mother) acting as the main supporter and directly interacting with the carcass by lifting it (case 1) or sinking it (case 2) was observed. Another adult individual (escort) was present in both encounters showing standing-by and excitement behaviors (case 1) and supportive behavior (case 2). In both encounters, whistles, pulsed sounds, and bray-call elements were recorded. The consistent vocal activity observed likely conveyed context-specific information. A signature whistle in the first encounter was also recorded, likely emitted by the putative mother as a distress call. This report confirms the occurrence of epimeletic behavior in bottlenose dolphins and reports a preliminary description of the acoustic production when a dead calf is involved, providing additional information on this largely unknown topic.

In the task of carrying heavy objects, it is easy to cause back injuries and other musculoskeletal diseases. Although wearable robots are designed to reduce this danger, most existing exoskeletons use high-stiffness mechanisms, which are beneficial to load-bearing conduction, but this restricts the natural movement of the human body, thereby causing ergonomic risks. This article proposes a back exoskeleton composed of multiple elastic spherical hinges inspired by the biological spine. This spine exoskeleton can assist in the process of bending the body and ensure flexibility. We deduced the kinematics model of this mechanism and established an analytical biomechanical model of human–robot interaction. The mechanism of joint assistance of the spine exoskeleton was discussed, and experiments were conducted to verify the flexibility of the spine exoskeleton and the effectiveness of the assistance during bending.

To study the decompression effects of shaft explosion-proof door at different lifting heights, this paper designed the gas explosion testing system. Based on the test results, this paper made a numeric analysis of the change regularities of the shock wave overpressure when the shaft explosion-proof door was lifted at different heights. Finally, this paper determined the proper lifting height of the shaft explosion-proof door and put forward the active decompression concept. The research showed that (1) the shock wave overpressure at the explosion-proof door decreased in a power exponential relationship as the lifting height increased. When the lifting height increased from 0 cm to 5 cm, the peak overpressure at the explosion-proof door decreased from 36.06 kPa to 22.47 kPa, dropping by 37.7%. When it was lifted at a height of 40 cm, the overpressure dropped to 11.20 kPa and the decompression reached 68.9%. (2) The overpressure at the ventilator decreased in a power exponential relationship as the lifting height increased. When the lifting height of the explosion-proof door increased from 0 cm to 5 cm, the decompression ratio reached the maximum 18.4%. After that, the decompression effect became worse and worse. (3) The explosion-proof door could depressurize and protect the ventilator at gas explosion but with limited effects. To protect the ventilator and the explosion-proof door to the maximum, it was suggested that the pressure sensor was set up somewhere in the mine where the gas explosion is likely to occur. In this way, the explosion was sensed in time and the explosion-proof door could be actively lifted for decompression. This paper was of great guiding significance in optimizing the design of the explosion-proof door equipment, reducing the loss of gas explosion accidents as well as carrying out the emergency rescue.

In this 4.0 industrial era, some material handlings are still conducted manually by human. One example is in the warehouse area of CV Cita Nasional, a milk processing factory in Kopeng, Central Java. Workers are repetitively unloading a 25 kg sack of sweet whey powder from truck to warehouse area. Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the musculoskeletal disorders risks on that workers manual handling activity. The OVAKO Working Posture Analysis System (OWAS) was chosen to be applied in the evaluation steps. For each activity in the unloading process, OWAS score category of 3 (improvements are necessary as soon as possible) were resulted on lifting, 2 (improvements are necessary in the long-term future) on carrying, and 3 on lowering the load. Consequently, a trolley was then designed to minimize the risks. The trolley was designed based on Indonesian anthropometry dimensions. Applying this proposed tool, lifting and lowering activities were then categorized in OWAS score of 2, whilst carrying was resulted in OWAS score of 1 (improvements are not necessary). This applied study was valuable in order to minimize the musculoskeletal disorders risks on such manual material handling activity, not only in the current workplace, but also in similar situation of industries.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Since the last decade, the non-contact finger seal (NCFS) has attracted an increasing number of researchers due to its inherent flexibility and non-contact features, which can significantly improve the service life and reduce the leakage rate of the finger seals. In this paper, to enhance the NCFS sealing performance, lifting pads with twenty (20) different herringbone groove surface topographies are proposed based on the uniform design method. Numerical analysis is carried out based on the two-way fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method to better mimic the actual working conditions. The analysis of results using statistical tools reveals that the herringbone groove topographies placed on the bottom surface of low-pressure lifting pads can significantly improve the load-carrying capacity and sealing performance. In addition, the correlation analysis of the sealing performance and geometric parameters of the herringbone groove demonstrate that reducing the groove width or increasing the groove internal angle can improve the lifting and leakage capacities. Finally, the optimal herringbone groove and general structure (no groove) are comparatively analysed under variable working conditions, and the results show that the former has much better sealing performance.

Streszczenie:
The article presents the experimental investigation of low-lifting capacity hydraulic scissor lift energy consumption. The analysis is based on experimental tests of two individual drives of the scissor lift: the conventional one and the variable-speed electro-hydraulic one. The investigation focuses on the study of the total energy consumption for lifting and lowering the scissor lift with different masses of transported cargo and also power consumptions of each element supplying these systems. Particular attention was paid to the significant impact of power supply on each control component as the main factor of reduction in the energetic efficiency of the low-lifting capacity scissor lift. A comparison of both drives indicated that the mass of transported cargo has a significant influence on the choice of the drive used. Results of the research show that significant energetic savings are obtained, as the modernized propulsion system consumes 67% energy of the standard one. A decrease in the percentage of energy losses with the increase in the mass handled led to the conclusion that the enhancement of propulsion systems in scissor lifts should be especially considered in machines carrying big loads.

Lifting and transporting equipment is one of the keys to carrying out work in the manufacturing and construction industries. Due to limited access, various obstacles must be overcome in some working areas. A ganrty crane is an alternative lifting equipment that has high flexibility. This article reports the research results on the girder’s main components. This component gets direct contact with loading when lifting and rigging work is carried out. This research method was conducted by comparing manual calculation models and CAE using the Solidworkss Simulation software. From these two methods, this study yielded 23.091 and 25.54MPa for manual calculations and the finite element method, respectively. Furthermore, in the finite element method with direct contact loading, a stress of 40.52MPa is obtained. From the three stress calculations, it can be concluded that the safety factor has exceeded the requirements set out in the standard. Furthermore, utilizing the Goodman model, mitigating the possibility of fatigue failure also indicates a safe condition. Based on recent research reports, a potential self-healing is not yet possible to be recognized well especially for metals having a grain size of micron.
