Two of the largest architecture libraries in Spain are in institutions in Catalonia. One of these is the UPC (the Technical University of Catalonia), the home of the library of the ETSAB (the School of Architecture of Barcelona), which is one of the oldest architecture schools in Spain. The other is COAC (the Architects’ Association of Catalonia), which boasts one of the biggest architecture libraries in a professional association in the country. While these two libraries were built up in the 19th century, other architecture libraries have been created in Catalonia in the 20th century, both in schools of architecture and in the branches of COAC.

The Biblioteca Nacional (BN), founded in 1712 as the Royal Library, became the national library in 1836 and has since then served as the nation's bibliographic repository and a public library for Madrid. It became an autonomous body in 1991. In a major reconstruction of the existing BN building, space occupied by other bodies is being recovered. Legal deposit, established in 1716, now includes audio and visual recordings; the BN has not however had the resources needed to ensure enforcement. The Autonomous Regions have legal deposit of all material published in them. A Reproduction and Conservation Unit has been created to conserve the valuable collections of manuscripts, incunabula and rare books. A new computer system has enabled the BN to undertake several important bibliographic tasks, but not yet to fulfil its role as apex of the Spanish library system. After many years of international isolation the library is playing a substantial role in IFLA and in cooperative activities with Latin American libraries. The challenge facing the BN today is to identify and articulate its role as it relates to public libraries in the Autonomous Regions and to university and special libraries.

The first author's library was the starting point and then the catalogs of the National Library of Spain, Public Libraries of Spain, Spanish University Libraries Network, as well as the Spanish ISBN Agency Database of books published in Spain were consulted by using the keywords “lucha leonesa” and “aluche”. The annotated bibliography comprises a total of 19 monographs, published between 1977 and 2015. As a whole, they show the eminently local dimension of this traditional sport, the support it has received from several public and private institutions, as well as its double dimension as a sport and as a tradition solidly rooted in Leonese culture.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the type of content disseminated by school libraries through social media and what topics are the most commonly used, to discover if, in addition to topics concerning libraries, information with a wide social scope is also disseminated. Design/methodology/approach This paper reviews the use of social media as well as the implementation of a content analysis on the most used 2.0 platforms, to locate which content is the most relevant in the school libraries of public secondary schools in Extremadura. Findings In the Extremadura region of Spain, the results of the 752 publications posted during the period 2014-2017 by the libraries of the 86 public secondary schools on six selected social media platforms generated a total of 4 categories and 14 subcategories, and point to a predominance of topics related to encouraging and promoting reading and writing, and to the library’s support function for both the classroom and the school. However, shortcomings are detected in content related to social aspects of special interest, such as bullying or education in equality. Originality/value The originality of this paper lies in the fact that although there are some works on the analysis of the content of the social web of libraries in general, especially university libraries, the same does not apply to the evaluation of social media in school libraries, and much less about the analysis of social media content in these types of libraries.

Although librarians generally display an inclusive management style, barriers to students with disabilities remain widespread. Against this backdrop, a collaborative research project called Inclusive Library was launched in 2019 in Catalonia, Spain. This study empirically tests how involving students with disabilities in the experience design process can lead to new improvements in users’ library experience. A mix of qualitative techniques, namely focus groups, ethnographic techniques and post-experience surveys, were used to gain insights from the 20 libraries and 20 students with disabilities collaborating in the project. Based on the participants’ voices and follow-up experiences, the study makes several suggestions on how libraries can improve their accessibility. Results indicate that ensuring proper resource allocation for accessibility improves students with disabilities’ library experience. Recommendations for library managers are also provided.

The massive and unstoppable emergence of electronic books in libraries has altered their organization. This disruptive technology has led to structural changes. Currently, an e-book exists only if its metadata exists. The objective of this article is to analyse the impact that the massive incorporation of electronic books in university library systems is having in the processes of assignment of subject headings and classification codes. We carried out a survey of more than six hundred libraries, which means almost all the university libraries in Portugal, Spain, England, United States, Brazil, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Australia. From the results obtained, it is deduced that: 1) librarians expect e-books to be provided with descriptive metadata related to the subject headings and classification codes; 2) the bibliographic records provided by publishers/providers seem to be improvable; 3) the quality of the metadata provided by the providers does not seem to be taken into account when selecting publishers for the purchase; 4) the discovery tools are also clearly improvable; 5) it seems that there is no “frustration” or “stress” among librarians about the changes produced in relation to technical processes; and, 6) it does not seem that we are facing a paradigm shift motivated by these issues.

A Review of: Cigarini, A., Bonhoure, I., Vicens, J., & Perelló, J. (2021). Public libraries embrace citizen science: Strengths and challenges. Library & Information Science Research, 43(2), 101090. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.lisr.2021.101090Objective – The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of libraries supporting citizen scientist (CS) projects. Design – Mixed methods program evaluation study. Setting – 24 public libraries in Barcelona, Spain. Subjects – Public librarians and library users. Methods – It is a mixed methods and mixed population study done in several phases. The first phase involved training 30 librarians how to conduct a citizen science project. They were given a pre and post survey about their perceptions of citizen science and comfort-level in conducting a project. The second phase involved a project run by the now-trained librarians with library user participation. At this phase a questionnaire was given to the users at the start and end of the project. Finally, a focus group of librarians was asked about their project. The responses were evaluated through thematic analysis. Seven libraries participated in the focus groups. Main Results – During the first phase of the study, the survey found the librarians were pessimistic about user participation in a citizen science project, both at the beginning (75%) and at the end (79%) of the session. Though they felt confident in discussing citizen science (100%) and had high satisfaction in the training (70%), only 42% felt confident to conduct a project on their own. The second phase involved the users, 94% of whom had never participated in a CS project. At the end, 70% of users said the project positively changed their perceptions of the library and 70% were satisfied with the experiment. During the focus groups, librarians said the project brought new users into the library and had the potential to build more relationships among participants and with the community. Major challenges discussed were user commitment to the project and the workload required by librarians, however they all answered positively when asked about continuing with CS projects. Conclusion – This study showed that citizen science projects can be successfully implemented in public libraries. Public libraries are facing challenges caused by societal change, the rise of open science, and more transparent and novel democratic ways of knowledge production. Updating public library infrastructure would be needed to support these projects more fully. This may involve building partnerships and developing new guidelines. There is potential for public libraries to be leaders and innovators in citizen science.

Streszczenie:
The primary objective of this work was to study news items about libraries published in the different communications media of the Region of Extremadura (Spain) in recent years in order to see what impact and visibility libraries have had in those media. A secondary objective was to determine quantitatively whether the complex economic crisis the country has suffered was reflected in any decrease in the number of news items about libraries. For this, a total of 3206 news articles was collected. After their analysis in detail, they were reduced to the 490 which the study’s results address. This decrease by a factor of about seven in the final news items selected was because the title or the first few paragraphs of the news item did not exactly express its content. As a consequence, a qualitative analysis of the content was necessary. The conclusion reached was that the economic crisis suffered by Spain had indeed been reflected in an evolution undergone by news items about libraries in the media. Although the numbers of those items decreased in the period analysed (from 2007/2008 to 2012/2013) coinciding with the crisis, there was an upswing in 2013 compared with 2012 which may reflect the much hoped for ‘green shoots’ of recovery of the Spanish economy.

A number of significant works created by the practicing veterinarians of the XVII century and dedicated to the treatment of horses, mules and donkeys are kept in the archives of the public libraries of Portugal and Spain. These works, which are presented in the scanned form at the official websites of the libraries, describe the causes of animal diseases, disease clinical features and methods of treatment. One of the frequently mentioned pathological states in animals in medieval Spain were wounds. In the present article some of these extremely fascinating scientific sources have been analysed to determine the methods of diagnosing and treating the equine wounds, as well as to identify the historical trends of veterinary medicine development, taking into account the current state of its scientific and practical knowledge in the studied field.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the level of transparency of the libraries of Catalan universities that are members of the Consortium of University Services of Catalonia (CSUC). Design/methodology/approach The analysis involved reviewing the information available on the websites of the ten libraries belonging to CSUC. For each library’s website, the presence of 18 indicators was explored. These indicators had been defined by the Commitment and Transparency Foundation (Spain). Findings There is a notable difference between the level of transparency of Catalan universities and their libraries. Moreover, the universities’ culture of transparency is not reflected in that of the libraries. Four of the libraries can be considered transparent because they have accomplished from 12 to 18 indicators; three can be considered “translucent”, due to their indicators ranging from 11 to 7 points; and three are considered opaque as a result of obtaining from 1 to 5 indicators. Practical implications There is a need to review the volume and quality of information that can be consulted on library websites, considering that all services and entities funded with public money must inform citizens of the principles that govern their management and the results obtained. Originality/value The information regarding transparency is incomplete and should be organised with parameters that make it easier to find. Libraries that occupy the lowest positions in the ranking all belong to private universities. Their poor results are due to the lack of information justifying their management or providing information on how the service is organised. Some conclusions of this study are very similar to those of the study on Madrid’s Madroño Consortium (Pacios Lozano, 2016) which has been taken into account in this paper.

The performance took place in 26 libraries at three public universities in the Autonomous Community of Valencia (Spain), namely ten libraries at the University of Valencia (UV), five at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), and eleven libraries at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH). In 1612, a Spanish fleet captured a French ship whose stolen cargo included the entire manuscript collection of the Sultan of Morocco, Muley Zidan. Soon, the collection made its way to the royal library, El Escorial, transforming the library into an important repository of Arabic books, which, since then, Arabists from across Europe sought to visit. By focusing on the social life of the collection, from the moment of its capture up through the process of its incorporation into the Escorial, this article examines three related issues: the first regards the social trajectories of books and the elasticity of their meaning and function, which radically altered in nature. The second part of the article examines the circulation of the Moroccan manuscripts in relation to a complex economy of restrictions over the reading and possession of Arabic manuscripts in early modern Spain. Finally, the third part focuses on the political and legal debates that ensued the library’s capture, when the collection became the locus of international negotiations between Spain, Morocco, France and the Dutch United Provinces over Maritime law, captives, and banned knowledge. By placing and analyzing the journey of Zidan’s manuscripts within the context of Mediterranean history, the paper explains (1) why Spain established one of the largest collections of Arabic manuscripts exactly when it was cleansing its territories of Moriscos (Spanish forcibly converted Muslims), and (2) why the Moroccan collection was kept behind locked doors at the Escorial.

This allows us to reflect on the transformation of the very nature and aims of libraries during the first 15 years of the 21st century. We examine the main official statistical source of information on cultural participation, the Survey on Cultural Habits and Practices in Spain, and track the impact of social change and digitization on library services. By analysing the 2002–2003, 2006–2007, 2010–2011 and 2014–2015 surveys, we monitor changes in the questionnaires and in the derived indicators, and relate the findings to general trends and challenges for public libraries in contemporary societies.

Streszczenie:
Purpose – Knowledge Management (KM) in libraries refers to the systematic management and control of knowledge as an important resource when producing high-quality library and information services. If one wishes to make the optimal use and dissemination of organizational and other work life related knowledge, then one needs to acquire appropriate KM tools and to adopt a systematic procedure for KM throughout the organization. This can exert an energizing effect on the lifelong learning of the libraries’ staff which is essential in today’s rapidly changing scientific information environment. The purpose of this paper is to analyze KM practices is selected higher education libraries. Design/methodology/approach – This qualitative research conducted in three academic libraries – IZUS/Universitätsbibliothek Stuttgart, Germany; Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) Library Barcelona, Spain; and University of Eastern Finland (UEF) Library, Finland – makes a comparison of the KM processes being implemented in each of the institutions to ensure the continuous learning of the libraries’ staff. Findings – This comparative study revealed several key reasons and best practices for implementing KM procedures in the selected university libraries. They are collected under three main issues: KM advantages; KM technological opportunities; and KM organizational culture. Research limitations/implications – Based on three cases and thus are mainly examples of the KM implementation. Practical implications – Paper gives tools for libraries and their management on the KM system implementation. Social implications – Based on the paper’s findings the KM implementation in all the selected libraries led to better management and better staff inclusion into the library service development. Originality/value – KM implementation studies are still rare among the libraries.

The main purpose of this study is to highlight the way in which Spain has functioned since its accession to the European Union in 1986 in the field of culture. After completing the process of transition to democracy, and having fully recognized the importance of culture, Spain began to be active and to participate with success in most European cultural programs. The interest between Spain and the European Union has been mutual from the beginning. Spain was interested in promoting Spanish culture in Europe and the European Union in highlighting the cultural diversity that characterized Spain. New resources were arriving at the country and Spain tried to use them in the best possible way to promote the sector of culture. Spain has been actively involved in almost all cultural initiatives developed by the European Union. In this study we aim to present an analysis about Spain’s activity in the context of European cultural initiatives in order to enter a new era. More particular, we aim to identify the activity of Spain in the institution of the European Capital of Culture, the European Heritage Label, the European Days of Cultural Heritage and the Digital Libraries Initiative. We address and analyze how Spain eventually created a new image of the country both at a European and at an international level. Moreover, is presented an analysis on the cultural policy pursued by Spain after its accession to the European Union.

Mexican art, dating back to 2500 BC, is enormously rich and stylistically varied, the product of the country’s indigenous, ‘mestizo’ [mixed race] and Mexican cultures, which range from Olmec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec and Mixtec, to Mayan and Aztec. During the colonial period, the influence of European art was added, brought via Spain, and at the same time Catholicism prevailed over pre-Hispanic polytheism. Mexican culture as it is known today emerged at the end of the Spanish colonial period and its wealth is amply demonstrated in the content of the writings and other documents found in Mexican libraries today.

Institutional repositories are a strategy to promote scientific production and Open Educational Resources (OER) in universities. They offer a service that facilitates educational innovation, but also generate great concern about the lack of respect for copyright. This study analyses information on the open access and antiplagiarism policy established by 62 repositories from 75 Spanish universities that are already using this service. The stratified sample involves 20 libraries from every Faculty of Education in Spain (38.5%). The study used a mixed methodological approach, three different information collection instruments were used: repository analysis questionnaire, analysis of the libraries' web pages and in-depth interviews with those responsible for these services. The results obtained allow us to know the type of information existing in the repositories, the institutional policy of free access to scientific production, as well as the way in which information is informed, acts and prevents plagiarism in them. The conclusion is that university repositories enjoy a high degree of open access to information, but there is not much information about plagiarism. However, libraries report antiplagiarism tools and offer training initiatives.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe the quantitative and qualitative methods to assess the sustainability of cooperation models within research libraries networks in the humanities. Design/methodology/approach – Changing research environment and budget constraints currently are the main challenges of research libraries networks: to cope with this pressure libraries need to build collective capacity through a strong model of collaboration and partnership and foster closer interaction between actors both from the library and the external world. In order to build effective and efficient cooperation models research libraries networks will first need to share a common vision and a well-focused organisation. Nevertheless, a multi-level approach should help them to identify their core functional requirements, the specialised needs of their users and a flexible cooperation structure able to maintain the financial sustainability of the system. Findings – After illustrating the current challenges in the research libraries world, and how cooperation and collaboration issues have been connoting library management and activities, this work presents the methodology and the preliminary results of a research project which surveyed the URBS network, an international consortium of 12 libraries from academic and research institutions of several nations (Austria, Denmark, Finland, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the USA) based in Rome, Italy. Originality/value – This paper will be of interest and value to other research library networks or consortia with an interest in the development of new organisational models, and in the evaluation and assessment of their sustainability.

One of a number of events which marked the reopening of the José Maria Lafragua Library, an important 19th century Mexican public library, was a dialogue between a librarian, Elsa Barberena, and an art historian, Marco Diaz. José Maria Lafragua was a historian, politician, writer, and supporter of the arts in the city of Puebla; the dialogue deals not only with his Library, but also with other libraries founded with the intention of disseminating European culture in the ‘New Spain’, the collections of which contain many rare and fine books. Access to books and the experience of handling them has tended to be a privilege of the few in spite of Lafragua’s purpose in founding a public library; the reopening of his Library, which belongs to the Universidad Autonoma de Puebla, is a signal contribution to implementation of the principle that books are for all.

Purpose This paper aims to describe how linked data technologies can change the digital library collections, what are the benefits of linked data applications in digital libraries and what are the challenges of digital libraries in linked data environment. Design/methodology/approach The present study is based on substantial literature review on the applications of linked data technologies in digital libraries. The search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Google Scholar were used to find the relevant literature for the study. Online databases such as Pro Quest, Science Direct, Emerald and JSTORE were also used to find the relevant literature of the study. Databases of Library Sciences Library and Information Science and Technology Abstracts and Library Information Science Abstracts were also used to find the relevant literature of the study. Library, linked data technologies, Semantic Web, digital library and digital collections were the main keywords which were used to find the relevant literature for the study. Findings The evolution of linked data technologies and Semantic Web has changed the traditional role of the libraries. Traditional libraries are converting into digital libraries and digital libraries are in a struggle to publish their resources on the Web using XML-based metadata standards. It has made capable the digital collections to be viewed by machines on the Web just like human. On the emergence of linked data applications in digital libraries, Web visibility of the libraries has been enhanced to provide the opportunities for the users to find their required quality information of libraries round-the-clock on the Web. National Library of France, National Library of Spain, Europeana, Digital Public Library of Americana, Library of Congress and The British Library have taken the initiatives to publish their resources on the Web using linked data technologies. Originality/value This study present several key issues for policy makers, software developers, decision makers and library administrators about linked data technologies and its implementations in digital libraries. The present study may play its role to facilitate the users of the Web who are enthusiastically interested to exploit the quality and authentic library resources on the Web round-the-clock. Search engines will also achieve their longstanding goal to exploit the quality resources of the libraries for their Web users to make their Web appearance more credible and trustworthy.

In Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Catalonia, Spain) there is a network of four public libraries. They belong to the City, with technical assistance, strategic orientation and financial support from the provincial government, Diputació de Barcelona. These four libraries have been built in different historical periods and located in neighbourhoods with very unequal social backgrounds. They have been working on adapting their services to their neighbourhoods and as a network they have been moving on along the differences. Even so, the current information society challenges require a city library project in order to guarantee social cohesion and equal opportunities. This article tries to explain the strategy to achieve those goals, based on knowledge management and networking, transversal workshops and a shared communication circuit that so far has allowed this urban library network to extend and to renew services as well as to empower vulnerable sectors in accordance with the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

Streszczenie:
The k-nearest neighbors (KNN) algorithm is a non-parametric supervised machine learning classifier; which uses proximity and similarity to make classifications or predictions about the grouping of an individual data point. This ability makes the KNN algorithm ideal for classifying datasets of geological variables and parameters prior to 3D visualization. This paper introduces a machine learning KNN algorithm and Python libraries for visualizing the 3D stratigraphic architecture of sedimentary porous media in the Quaternary onshore Llobregat River Delta (LRD) in northeastern Spain. A first HTML model showed a consecutive 5 m-equispaced set of horizontal sections of the granulometry classes created with the KNN algorithm from 0 to 120 m below sea level in the onshore LRD. A second HTML model showed the 3D mapping of the main Quaternary gravel and coarse sand sedimentary bodies (lithosomes) and the basement (Pliocene and older rocks) top surface created with Python libraries. These results reproduce well the complex sedimentary structure of the LRD reported in recent scientific publications and proves the suitability of the KNN algorithm and Python libraries for visualizing the 3D stratigraphic structure of sedimentary porous media, which is a crucial stage in making decisions in different environmental and economic geology disciplines.

Purpose – This paper aims to show the progress made by 37 universities in Spain in adopting the “Information Commons” model, a strategy planed 10 years ago by the Spanish University Library Network (hereafter referred to as REBIUN) to meet the demands of the European Higher Education Area. Design/methodology/approach – A Web survey was sent to 70 supervisors or directors of Spanish university libraries. Findings – This paper reveals current approaches toward the goal of convergence and provides an idea of the extent to which universities have thus far managed to integrate services and resources in the Information Commons. Not all libraries have initiated this path or it is still in its early stages and the transformation is taking place at different “speeds” or degrees of implementation. Originality/value – The paper shows, for the first time, that the incomplete, scant or absent integration of university services and resources in an Information Commons has to do with multiple factors in each library. The human factor is the key element in this type of change process. Commitment, network building and synergies are thus necessary factors in the success of this process.

Spatial data repositories specialised in geographic information systems (GIS) are an extension of map libraries and archives where much of the increase in use and citation for its geo-spatial data comes from making them available through Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) web services. In this paper, resource needs and teaching perspectives of these open standards will be described and explained as they have become a domain of application in spatial data repositories and, marine data literacy. The research is based on checking ocean research data rules and contexts in Spain within the European obligations as defined by the EU directive INSPIRE. On that premise, Spanish spatial data infrastructures (SDI) are shown integrating OGC Web Services (OWS) with repositories for ocean observation data, a typical kind of big data. The study revealed that the broad European support to the big data open standards (OGC) implementation in the oceanographic community, is conducted with a model suitable for library management systems. However, Spanish participation in European ocean data spaces is limited and a likely explanation is that this question has not been discussed for about a decade. These findings strengthen the links between spatial data repositories and OGC standards, to identify requirements for interoperability work.
