The purposes of the study were to test the mediating role of leisure involvement and flow on the relationship between emotional contagion and leisure benefits in sports and leisure. The participants were college student in Taiwan selected by the purposive sampling method. Sports and Leisure Emotional Contagion Scale, Sports and Leisure Involvement Scale, Sports and leisure Flow Scale, and Sports and Leisure Benefits Scale, are used as instuments after compiled by authors, and retested using PLS-CFA. The CFA results showed that four scales have a good reliability and validity. The data were analyzed using PLS-SEM. Results of the study indicate that leisure involvement and flow had full mediating effects between emotional contagion and leisure benefits. The results could be applied in both sports and leisure area of mathematics instruction, and emotional contagion could elevate leisure benefits by leisure involvement and flow.

Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to construct and test an antecedent relationship path model for the leisure involvement of Taiwan expatriate managers working in Mainland China. A leisure temporal-spatial involvement (LTSI) was developed. Design/methodology/approach Burnout, perceived freedom in leisure and leisure coping strategies were proposed in the conceptual model as antecedents of leisure involvement. A questionnaire survey gathered information on the characteristics of respondents, including demographic/socio-economic details, expatriate profile and leisure activity participation. Confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were used in this research to measure the relationships among the four scale variables (job burnout, perceived freedom in leisure, leisure coping strategies and leisure involvement). Findings The expatriate managers experienced high burnout levels, particularly in the form of exhaustion. Their leisure involvement was mainly influenced by perceived freedom in leisure. Research limitations/implications This work contributes to the research on leisure and expatriation in several ways. It is one of the first empirical studies to examine prominent leisure concepts (freedom, coping and involvement) within the milieu of expatriation. The findings provide further support to the notion of the “presumed cultural similarity paradox,” in that expatriates of Chinese ethnicity still had significant adjustment difficulties in Mainland China. The research again confirms the challenges of Mainland China as an expatriation destination. Practical implications The research results have significant practical value and may assist Taiwan-capital enterprises in improving expatriates’ leisure life management. The section on Managerial and policy implications outlines the implications for the actors involved. Social implications This work has social implications since the Taiwan expatriate managers are not effectively adjusting to their work–life environments in Guangzhou. Greater social contact between locals and these managers is recommended in the future. Originality/value A new scale for leisure involvement (LTSI), expressed in temporal and spatial dimensions, is developed to fit the particular situations faced by expatriates. This is also one of only a few empirical research studies to consider leisure involvement within an expatriation framework.

Leisure is an important way for residents to achieve well-being. As urbanization continues to accelerate and residents’ spiritual and cultural needs gradually increase, urban park leisure is becoming increasingly prominent in daily recreation, and recreational activities that meet residents’ short-term and frequent needs for leisure are becoming preferred. In this article, based on structural equation models, four representative urban parks in Beijing were selected as study areas to explore the relationships among three variables: leisure involvement, flow experience, and place attachment. The results showed that (1) leisure involvement had a significant positive effect on flow experience, (2) flow experience had a significant positive effect on place attachment, and (3) leisure involvement had both a significant direct effect on place attachment and an indirect effect mediated by flow experience. In addition, according to the empirical analysis of the influence of leisure behavior characteristics on leisure benefits, it was found that 1–3 h of leisure time in the park had the best leisure benefits. Therefore, a higher level of leisure involvement and a stronger flow experience can help to enhance residents’ place attachment; foster self-expression, identity, and self-actualization; and boost the benefits of leisure, which will eventually improve personal well-being and quality of life, construct and strengthen a sense of urban community, and fulfill people’s aspirations for a better life.

China is the only country with more than 200 million people aged 60 years and above. The Chinese government considers seniors’ universities to be an important form of leisure in which older people spend their free time. To explore the benefits of this education-oriented form of serious leisure, this study investigates the concept of successful aging and tests the effect of serious leisure involvement in seniors’ universities on the subjective well-being and successful aging of “young-old” participants in the context of China. In addition, this study examines the influence of family structure on the relationship between the above variables based on third-place theory. Although limitations to the approach are identified and discussed, the survey results show that the involvement of the aging population in education-oriented serious leisure activities is significantly associated with successful aging and that subjective well-being partially mediates the relationship between serious leisure involvement and successful aging. Furthermore, the relationship between serious leisure involvement and successful aging differs significantly among groups with different family structures.

This study aimed to investigate the leisure involvement level of individuals 40 years and over according to various variables. The study sample consisted of 106 volunteers aged 40 years and over in Hendek district of Sakarya city. As a data collection tool “leisure involvement scale” which developed by Kyle et al. (2007) and adapted to Turkish by Gürbüz et al. (2015), and personal information form were used. SPSS statistic program was used to analyze the data. The histograms, Skewness, and Kurtosis values (between -1 and +1) were checked to ensure normal distribution of the data. Therefore, parametric tests, independent sample t tests, and one-way ANOVA tests were used. To determine the significant differences between the groups, the Tukey test used. According to the findings of the study, between the gender variable and social relationship level, between the long-term accommodation place variable and attractiveness, between giving the importance and social relationship, between daily leisure time and giving importance and social relationship level, difficulty in finding free time and attractiveness, between the variables giving importance, social relationship and identification and doing sport statistically meaningful result found with the attractiveness dimension. As a result, it was found that the social relationships of females were higher in leisure time involvement than males. Also, results show that living in the same accommodation place for the long-term effects individuals’ leisure time involvement level. It was determined that the time devoted to leisure time affects the importance of leisure time and social relationships positively.

Renaissance festivals are a growing phenomenon that situates patrons in a fantasy world of rural medieval life. It offers an opportunity to escape modern realities and construct an alternate persona and identity. These activities frequently result in committed behaviors that bring about extensive travel and offer opportunities to enhance skill development, build lasting friendships, and share a unique world view. Renaissance activities are denoted as forms of leisure loyalty, such as serious leisure, based on qualitative assessments. Using the Sherwood Forest Faire held in Austin, Texas as a case study, this article attempts to test the applicability of leisure loyalty frameworks, specifically, serious leisure, obsessive/harmonious passion and memorable experiences, for involvement in Faire, explores demographic effects on involvement in Faire, and assesses the spillover effect of Faire involvement on a selected set of Renaissance-related leisure activities. The results show that a better framework for travel involvement to Faire may fall within the concepts of harmonious/obsessive passion and memorable experience.

Although the effect of leisure constraints and involvement on loyalty has drawn attention in recent years, there are a limited number of studies for bicycle users. For this purpose, we investigated a) the main constraints for enrolled university students and the level of loyalty, b) the impact of perceived constraints on bicycle use c) the relationships between variables (leisure constraints, involvement, and loyalty) in the present study. This study consisted of 498 (289 female and 209 male) university students. When the main constraints of university students’ participation were examined, the highest constraints average scores were determined as "infrastructure", "laws and legislation" and "physical and economic" constraints, respectively. The regression analysis demonstrated that bicycle constraints significantly influenced both leisure involvement and loyalty. Besides, the sub-dimension attraction and self-expression of involvement significantly affected participation loyalty. In conclusion, these results suggest that marketing strategies could be improved to strengthen leisure involvement and to minimize constraints in order to increase loyalty.

This study compares father involvement, relative to the mother, in Peruvian families with preschool age children. We also examined father’s rearing history and sociodemographic characteristics as predictors of involvement in child related activities. Two hundred and six families participated in the study. Results showed that mothers were more involved in direct and indirect care, and fathers tended to be more involved in play. Teaching/discipline and outdoor leisure activities were shared. The models tested for paternal involvement in direct, indirect care, and outdoor leisure were significant. Father´s rearing history was a main predictor of direct care and outdoor leisure. Fathers’ perceptions of their own mothers’ care were negatively associated with their involvement in direct care; and their perceptions of their own fathers’ overprotection/control were negatively associated with fathers’ involvement in outdoor leisure. Results are discussed based on stereotypical gender-based role division in childrearing, and the modeling and compensatory hypotheses.

The disablement process model has been used as a framework to investigate factors that accelerate or decelerate disablement among older adults. Although very little is known about the direct and moderating effects of involvement in leisure activities on the disablement process, research has suggested that participation in leisure activities may serve as a factor affecting the disablement pathways. Using longitudinal data from individuals aged 65 and older ( N = 535) in the Americans' Changing Lives study, we examined the influence of leisure involvement on the disablement process model. Through regression analyses, we found that involvement in informal and formal leisure activities was significantly associated with the disablement process in this sample of older adults, and that the effect of informal and formal leisure on disablement changed across time points and at different phases of the pathway. Results suggest that leisure activities may be protective of cognitive health and mitigate the effect of functional limitations, perceptions of disability, and depressive symptoms among older adults.

Purpose Individuals’ daily leisure activities undertaken close to home often appear in tourism contexts when individuals are away from home. Previous studies have suggested that such leisure-tourism connection behaviors are enhanced by leisure involvement and leisure habits. However, few studies have examined if such a connection may have variations by life stage and gender. Therefore, this study aims to examine the roles of life stage and gender in consistency between leisure and tourism, in consideration of involvement and habit. The study samples were university graduates (n = 681) who had graduated from a university in the United States and were currently working and university students (n = 706) who were enrolled and taking classes at a university in the United States. Design/methodology/approach Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, exploratory factor analysis, t-test, two-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Findings The findings revealed differences in the effects of leisure involvement and habit factors on the leisure-tourism connection behaviors by life stage and gender. More details are presented in this paper. Originality/value This study is the first study to examine the leisure-tourism connection behaviors in consideration of life stage and gender.

Psychologists have different perspectives about well-being. In the satisfaction of needs theory it is stated that well-being is achieved when an individual's needs are satisfied. In this study we explored the relationships among leisure involvement, perceived health status, and leisure benefits to construct a model of the well-being of college students. A structural model based on the descriptive statistics from a convenience sample revealed that although leisure involvement was not directly related to leisure benefits, it did have an impact on well-being. In addition, perceived health status and leisure benefits were found to have a direct effect of well-being. The results are discussed in terms of their relevance to future researchers.

Family leisure can provide opportunities for both enjoyment and family growth. However, families of children with autism spectrum disorder experience multiple barriers to engaging in satisfying family leisure activities. This study surveyed parents of children with autism spectrum disorder ( n = 112) and parents of children with typical development ( n = 123) to examine relationships among family leisure involvement, leisure satisfaction, family functioning, and satisfaction with family life. Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder reported a similar amount of leisure involvement as families of typically developing children. However, they reported lower leisure satisfaction, poorer family functioning, and less satisfaction with family life. Mediation models suggested that low leisure satisfaction was related to less effective family communication, which in turn led to poorer family functioning and less satisfaction with family life. Amount of time spent in leisure made relatively small contributions to predicting other family variables. These results suggest that leisure-focused interventions for families of children with autism spectrum disorder should focus on improving quality, rather than quantity, of family leisure time.

The stepwise multiple and ordinal regression model revealed that the individual factors of older adults were significantly associated with leisure involvement: age (younger adults), gender (men), education level (higher education), perceived economic satisfaction (higher satisfaction with their financial condition), and perceived health (higher satisfaction with their health) variables were significantly related to more frequent participation in domestic leisure travel. Additionally, gender and education level were associated with leisure-time exercise; the four variables (gender, education level, economic activity, and perceived financial satisfaction) were related to leisure-time social activities. Contrary to our expectation, older adults who are older and with lower education were more likely to participate in volunteering activities. The results suggested that older adults’ sociodemographic characteristics play an essential role in leisure behavior. The extent to which these characteristics affect leisure participation varies with different types of activities and cultural contexts.

Abstract The present study examined leisure activity and its association with caregiver involvement (i.e., residence and time spent with primary caregiver) in 62 middle-aged and older adults with Down syndrome (aged 30–53 years). Findings indicated that middle-aged and older adults with Down syndrome frequently participated in social and passive leisure activities, with low participation in physical and mentally stimulating leisure activities. Residence and time spent with primary caregiver were associated with participation in physical leisure activity. The findings suggest a need for support services aimed at increasing opportunities for participating in physical and mentally stimulating leisure activity by middle-aged and older adults with Down syndrome. These support services should partner with primary caregivers in order to best foster participation in physical leisure activity.

This paper involves an investigation of the extent to which the leisure-time activities of individuals are tied to work and occupation. Primary attention is focused on how unemployment affects involvement in sport. An analysis of data collected in a 6-month study of 2,500 West German women leads to the conclusion that sports involvement is embedded in a social evaluation of work and leisure time. Sport involvement presupposes a specific personal and social identity, and is linked with a feeling of self-confidence to a specific body concept and time consciousness. What our ideas clarify is that the variability of personality disposition is shaped by situational factors; occupation and work, among other factors, are stabilizing influences. This stability can deteriorate among the unemployed if it is not secured by alternative roles. When stability deteriorates, sport involvement tends to decline.

Streszczenie:
Previous research indicates that leisure can provide alternatives for unsatisfying or missing jobs only if it is “serious” (Stebbins, 1982). Serious leisure is characterized by commitment on the part of participants. However, the terms commitment and leisure are not easily reconciled. Commitment, which denotes obligation, duty, restriction, and routine, may seem to negate essential elements of leisure such as freedom, individuality, spontaneity, variety, and pleasure. The article offers a conceptual discussion of commitment and its implications for the leisure sphere. Two concepts of commitment are derived from the sociological and social-psychological literature: External commitment and internal commitment, and the article analyzes their relationships with continuance, motivation, satisfaction, involvement, freedom, and routine. The analysis shows that, notwithstanding important differences between committed and uncommitted leisure, the concept of commitment is potentially useful for descriptive and explanatory frameworks of leisure behavior.

The aim of the study is to investigate the leisure involvement and happiness levels of the individuals who have any fitness center membership. Screening model was used in the research. The sample group of the research was composed of a total of 599 voluntary participants, 260 being “females” and 339 being “males”, who were using fitness centers and were selected using improbable purposeful sampling method. “Oxford Happiness Scale Short Form—OHS-F”, developed by Hills and Argyle (2002) and adapted into Turkish by Doğan and Cotok (2011) along with “Leisure Involvement Scale—LIS-F”, developed by Kyle et al. (2007) and adapted into Turkish by Gurbuz et al. (2018) were used in the study in addition to “Personal Information Form”. Descriptive statistical method (frequency, arithmetic mean, standard deviation) was used for the identification of the distribution of the participants’ information. In order to determine if the data had normal distribution or not, Shapiro-Wilk test for normality was conducted and in consequence of this test, t-test, single factorial MANOVA, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation tests were administered upon determining that the data were in accordance with parametric test conditions. According to the findings, while there was no significant difference found in the happiness levels in line with the gender, marital status and education levels of the participants; a significant difference was determined in the leisure involvement levels according to education level and gender, and yet no significant difference was found between the leisure involvement level and marital status. Besides, a positively significant relationship was determined between the level of happiness and leisure involvement. The restraints as well as the evaluations for future studies were discussed in this sense.

Abstract Grandparents are playing an increasing role in the lives of their grandchildren. Participating in this role enriches grandparent’s well-being through feelings of enjoyment and satisfaction. Research also indicates participating in family leisure positively improves family communication, creates higher quality relationships, and enhances family cohesiveness and connectedness. However, the grandparent perspective, and their inclusion in family leisure, is often overlooked, rendering their voices invisible. Given the growing aging population, and the role grandparents play, their involvement in, and experience with, family leisure is becoming increasingly relevant. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to critically review and explore the available literature on grandparents (ages 65+) experiences with family leisure. This paper critically reflected on benefits of family leisure participation according to the World Health Organizations active aging and healthy aging ideologies. Participation in family leisure provides grandparents with opportunities for social participation, remaining active and engaged through generativity and contribution to family, as well as building, maintaining and enhancing relationships. More research that is inclusive of grandparent’s perspective of, and experience with, family leisure is needed. By taking a socioecological approach to understanding the experiences of grandparents’ participation in family leisure, clear suggestions can be made on how to support grandparent’s involvement in family leisure at the interpersonal, organizational, institutional, community, and policy levels. In particular, future actions and initiatives should simultaneously support family leisure across and within these domains. Promoting family leisure is one way to support active and healthy aging not only among older adults, but among all individuals.

Background: It can be thought that it is possible to define an individual's motivation and interest in a product or activity, the excitement of doing that job, as the concept of involvement. Aim: The aim of this research is to determine the involvement and life satisfaction levels for the recreational activities of individuals who are members of fitness centers. Methods: As a data collection tool in the research, Leisure Time Involvement Scale (LIS) developed by Kyle et al. (2007), whose validity and reliability for Turkish culture was made by Gürbüz et al. (2015), and Life Satisfaction Scale (LSS) developed by Diener et al., (1985) and adapted to Turkish culture by Köker (1991) were used. The population of the research consisted of private sports and fitness center users in Kastamonu, Samsun and Hatay provinces. The sample of the study consisted of 450 people (55% Female, 45% Male) who are members of private sports and fitness centers in Kastamonu, Samsun and Hatay provinces and were selected by purposive sampling method. Descriptive statistical methods (percentage, frequency, mean, standard deviation), T test, one-way analysis of variance ANOVA and pearson correlation test were used to analyze the data in the study. Results: According to the findings of the study, while there was a significant difference in the variables of age group, education level, frequency of use of the sports center, and hours spent daily in the sports center in the leisure time involvement scale, no significant difference was found in the gender variable. In the life satisfaction scale, while there was a significant difference in the variables of gender, education and weekly usage frequency, no significant difference was found in the age group and the daily hours spent in the sports center. Conclusion: In conclusion, the attractiveness factor has the strongest effect on individuals' leisure time involvement. In addition, it was determined that the participants' life satisfaction was high and there was a low and positive relationship between life satisfaction and leisure time involvement. Keywords: Fitness centers, Recreational activity, Involvement, Life satisfaction.
