Legendre’s equation is key in various branches of physics. Its general solution is a linear function space, spanned by the Legendre functions of the first and second kind. In physics, however, commonly the only acceptable members of this set are Legendre polynomials. The quantization of the eigenvalues of Legendre’s operator is a consequence of this. We present and explain a stand-alone and in-depth argument for rejecting all solutions of Legendre’s equation in physics apart from the polynomial ones. We show that the combination of the linearity, the mirror symmetry and the signature of the regular singular points of Legendre’s equation are quintessential to the argument. We demonstrate that the evenness or oddness of Legendre polynomials is a consequence of the same premises.

Narrative Structure, Function, and Cultural Values in Legends of CentralKalimantan. Research entitled is motivated by the interest of researcher topreserve the legend of the area that is now almost extinct and forgotten by thecommunity. This study aims to describe (1) the structure of narrative in legends ofcentral kalimantan, (2) the function of legend in legendsof central kalimantan, (3)cultural values in legends of central kalimantan. This research used a descriptivemethod. the data source can be from fifteen legends in central kalimantan creationby Prof. Drs. Kumpiady Widen, MA, Ph. D then collected through severaltechniques, classified, analyzed, and concluded. Based on the results of dataanalysis, it can be concluded that of the fifteen legends that have been analyzed,there are ten local legends and five individual legends. Based on analysis of thenarrative structure, the five narrative stages are found from the fifteen legends.Based on analysis of legend’s function, the six functions of legend used as theory inthis study, only found four functions of legend, the function of legend to help theeducation of young people, increase feelings of solidarity of group, socialsanctions for people who behave well or punish, and last as a means of socialcriticism. based on analysis of the cultural values contained in these fifteen legendsfound five cultural values, namely: the cultural values of human life, the culturalvalues of human works, the cultural values of human perceptions of time, thecultural values of the human view of nature and the latter are cultural valueshuman relationships with others. Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan (1) Strukturnarasi dalam kumpulan legenda di Kalimantan Tengah (2) Fungsi legenda dalamkumpulan legenda di Kalimantan Tengah (3) Nilai Budaya dalam kumpulanlegenda di Kalimantan Tengah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif. Sumber data didapat dari lima belas legenda yang ada di Kalimantan Tengahkarya Prof. Drs. Kumpiady Widen, MA, Ph. D. Berdasarkan analisis mengenaistruktur narasi, kelima tahap narasi ditemukan dari lima belas legenda tersebut.Berdasarkan analisis mengenai fungsi legenda, dari enam fungsi legenda yang dijadikan teori dalam penelitian ini hanya ditemukan empat fungsi legenda.Berdasarkan analisis mengenai nilai budaya yang terkandung dalam kelima belaslegenda tersebut ditemukan lima nilai budaya, yaitu nilai budaya tentang hidupmanusia, nilai budaya tentang karya manusia, nilai budaya persepsi manusiatentang waktu, nilai budaya pandangan manusia terhadap alam dan yang terakhirnilai budaya hubungan manusia dengan sesama. Sardinian contemporary literature and films have recently recovered an extensive heritage of folk myths and legends taken from the oral tradition. Legendary figures, such as accabadoras (female figure who was enabled with the task of easing the sufferings of the dying people), and fantasy creatures, such as cogas, surbiles (‘vampire witches’), janas (‘fairies, pixies’), and panas (‘the ghosts of women who died in childbirth’) are being revived by writers and film directors with the purpose to bring their memory back to life and share it with a wide audience of readers and spectators. The analysis of imaginary and legendary creatures in Sardinian contemporary literature cannot overlook orality and its central role in shaping popular imagination over the centuries. Writing has replaced orality, whilst mass media and digital media are getting the upper hand over storytelling as a practice of community and family aggregation, meant to mark the long working hours and scare the children, amongst the most common functions of Sardinian oral storytelling. The literary corpus includes fairy tales, novels, tales and legends dealing with the Sardinian oral tradition, whilst on the cinematic side I will examine short films, feature films and documentaries made in Sardinia over the last fifteen years.

In this paper, block pulse functions and hybrid Legendre polynomials are introduced. The estimators of a function $f$ having first and second derivative belonging to $Lip_\alpha[a,b]$ class, $0 < \alpha \leq 1$, and $a$, $b$ are finite real numbers, by block pulse functions and hybrid Legendre polynomials have been calculated. These calculated estimators are new, sharp and best possible in wavelet analysis. An example has been given to explain the validity of approximation of functions by using the hybrid Legendre polynomials approximation method. A real-world problem of radioactive decay is solved using this hybrid Legendre polynomials approximation method. Moreover, the Hermite differential equation of order zero is solved by using hybrid Legendre polynomials approximation method to explain the importance and the application of the technique of this method.

Efforts to preserve the legendary cultural heritage and in the framework of seeking the identity of the nation as well as the diversity of ethnic groups in Indonesia, one way to do is to collect and care for folklore. This research as a means to treat foklor legend of Lake Ranu and Ngebel legend Telaga. Both legends have almost the same story, both the character and the story. The purpose of this study is to determine the similarities and differences in the two legends, through its structure, function and cultural values. Such long-term goal in this study is, to provide knowledge about oral literature research on literature students who can be used as a reference for the future. In addition, this research can also provide new knowledge for the general public about the storyline of the legend of Lake Ngebel and the legend of Lake Ranu. Based on the results of research that has been done then can be drawn a conclusion, namely: the structure there are four equations and has three differences. Something contained in the two legends have three functions, namely; as entertainment, as a means of legitimizing institutions and cultural institutions, as child educators. For the cultural values contained in these two legends are the value of Diktatik, Ethical, and Religious values

Two sets of the Heun functions are introduced via integrals. Theorems about expanding functions with respect to these sets are proven. A number of integral and series representations as well as integral equations and asymptotic formulas are obtained for these functions. Some of the coefficients of the series are orthogonal (J-orthogonal) functions of discrete variables and may be interpreted as orthogonal polynomials. Other sets of the coefficients are biorthonormal. Expanding infinite vectors to series with respect to the coefficients is discussed. Certain Legendre functions of complex degree are limiting cases of the studied functions. This leads to new relations for Legendre functions and associated integral transforms. The treated Heun functions find a use for solving dual Fourier series equations which are reduced to the Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. Explicit solutions are obtained in a special case.

Associated Legendre functions of fractional degree appear in the solution of boundary value problems on wedges or in toroidal geometries, and elsewhere in applied mathematics. In the classical case when the degree is half an odd integer, they can be expressed using complete elliptic integrals. In this study, many transformations are derived, which reduce the case when the degree differs from an integer by one-third, one-fourth or one-sixth to the classical case. These transformations or identities facilitate the symbolic manipulation and evaluation of Legendre and Ferrers functions. They generalize both Ramanujan's transformations of elliptic integrals and Whipple's formula, which relates Legendre functions of the first and second kinds. The proofs employ algebraic coordinate transformations, specified by algebraic curves.

Spherical cap harmonic (SCH) theory has been widely used to format regional model of fields that can be expressed as the gradient of a scalar potential. The functions of this method consist of trigonometric functions and associated Legendre functions with integral-order but non-integral degree. Evidently, the constructing and computing of Legendre functions are the core content of the spherical cap functions. In this paper,the approximated calculation method of the normalized association Legendre functions with non-integral degree is introduced and an analysis of the entire order of associated non-Legendre function calculation is presented. Besides, we use the Muller method to search out for all intrinsic values. The results showed that the highest order of spherical harmonic function for constructing regional model of fields is limited, thus high-resolution spherical harmonic structure of local gravity field need to be improved.

Abstract The known standard recursion methods of computing the full normalized associated Legendre functions do not give the necessary precision due to application of IEEE754-2008 standard, that creates a problems of underflow and overflow. The analysis of the problems of the calculation of the Legendre functions shows that the problem underflow is not dangerous by itself. The main problem that generates the gross errors in its calculations is the problem named the effect of “absolute zero”. Once appeared in a forward column recursion, “absolute zero” converts to zero all values which are multiplied by it, regardless of whether a zero result of multiplication is real or not. Three methods of calculating of the Legendre functions, that removed the effect of “absolute zero” from the calculations are discussed here. These methods are also of interest because they almost have no limit for the maximum degree of Legendre functions. It is shown that the numerical accuracy of these three methods is the same. But, the CPU calculation time of the Legendre functions with Fukushima method is minimal. Therefore, the Fukushima method is the best. Its main advantage is computational speed which is an important factor in calculation of such large amount of the Legendre functions as 2 401 336 for EGM2008.

Pada penelitian ini dikembangkan visualisasi Associated Legendre Functions atau disebut juga dengan Spherical Harmonic Functions dalam tampilan 1D, 2D, 3D dengan menggunakan pemrograman MATLAB. Telah berhasil dikembang visualisasi dalam koordinat bola untuk fungsi r + Pnm(x) dengan r = 5 dan Pnm(x) yaitu Associated Legendre Functions untuk derajat n = dari 1 sampai 7 dan dengan orde m ≤ n.

Abstract. Hough functions are the eigenfunctions of the Laplace tidal equation governing fluid motion on a rotating sphere with a resting basic state. Several numerical methods have been used in the past. In this paper, we compare two of those methods: normalized associated Legendre polynomial expansion and Chebyshev collocation. Both methods are not widely used, but both have some advantages over the commonly used unnormalized associated Legendre polynomial expansion method. Comparable results are obtained using both methods. For the first method we note some details on numerical implementation. The Chebyshev collocation method was first used for the Laplace tidal problem by Boyd (1976) and is relatively easy to use. A compact MATLAB code is provided for this method. We also illustrate the importance and effect of including a parity factor in Chebyshev polynomial expansions for modes with odd zonal wave numbers.

The Legendre numbers of the second kind, an infinite set of rational numbers, are defined from the associated Legendre functions. An explicit formula and a partial table for these numbers are given and many elementary properties are presented. A connection is shown between Legendre numbers of the first and second kinds. Extended Legendre numbers of the first and second kind are defined in a natural way and these are expressed in terms of those of the second and first kind, respectively. Two other sets of rational numbers are defined from the associated Legendre functions by taking derivatives and evaluating these atx=0. One of these sets is connected to Legendre numbers of the first find while the other is connected to Legendre numbers of the second kind. Some series are also discussed.

Methods: The properties of the generalized Mittag-Leffler function are used in conjunction with different kinds of polynomials such as Jacobi, Legendre, and Hermite in order to evaluate their integrals. Results: Some integral formulae involving the Legendre function, the Bessel Maitland function and the generalized hypergeometric functions are derived. Conclusions: The results obtained here are general in nature and could be useful to establish further integral formulae involving other kinds of polynomials.

Abstract The article is devoted to coarse uses of language as a subject of dispute in confessional controversies over legendary narration. Such metainvective forms of communication are systematized, and questioned with regard to their functions: in the Protestant Lügenden (word combination of “legend” and “lie,” lying legends) and their Catholic replies, the “true” faith and its defense are connected with communicative behavior. Whereas Lutherans are above all effective at adopting coarse speech and the metainvective reproach of lying, the Counter-Reformation argumentation develops the strategic potential of metainvective communication in very different ways. Metainvective statements become a weapon particularly when they are absorbed into figures of meta-metainvective, which not only display the coarse speech but reveal and then criticize the strategy behind it. The tension between polemical prefaces and annotated miracle narratives in the Lügenden as well as the thematic proliferation of the legend discussion in the Catholic reports and sermons are ultimately shown to be genre-dynamic effects of the use of metainvectives.

AbstractWe propose amixed spectral method for heat transfer in unbounded domains, using generalised Hermite functions and Legendre polynomials. Some basic results on the mixed generalised Hermite-Legendre orthogonal approximation are established, which plays important roles in spectral methods for various problems defined on unbounded domains. As an example, the mixed generalised Hermite-Legendre spectral scheme is constructed for anisotropic heat transfer. Its convergence is proven, and some numerical results demonstrate the spectral accuracy of this approach.

This research describes the realizations of social conflicts, the function of social conflict, the similarities and differences of Dayang Merindu and Naya Sentika legends, and the implications on literature learning. The research applied a descriptive comparative method supported by an objective approach. Then, the researchers analyzed the data by collecting, reducing, presenting, and concluding the data. The data sources were the legends of Dayang Merindu and Naya Sentika. The research data were social conflict realizations and functions of the legends in the form of text excerpts. The results showed differences in the legends. The legend of Dayang Merindu had three types of conflicts: interpersonal, interest, and inter-social conflicts. The legend of Naya Sentika had four types of conflicts: interpersonal, interest, inter-group, and international conflicts. The similarities of the legends were the social functions of the conflicts. They were two functions: solidarity and communicative functions. The current research results are applicable for literature learning and further reading sources as the realization of literature appreciation.
