PurposeTo create a starting point for defining the processes of leading and managing in a way that enables both the separation and distinction of the concepts for study as well as the integration of the concepts for practical application.Design/methodology/approachThe paper draws on research that describes specific behaviors involved in leading and in managing; and it proposed a model that might be used to think about the integration of the two processes – leading and managing. The paper further describes the specific competencies involved in both leading and in managing.FindingsThe paper suggests that the current literature is particularly confusing as a result of the lack of agreement and specificity regarding the nature of the processes of leading and managing. The literature suffers from a proliferation of “spin off” forms of leadership – such as strategic leadership, entrepreneurial leadership, etc. – as well as from using the two terms as replacements for each other.Originality/valueThis discussion should further the research on the study of leadership competencies and leadership behaviors. It should also prove useful to those wishing to develop leadership development programs, leadership selection criteria, and more.

The enclosed literature focuses on learning about the various generations of the workforce and techniques that employers can utilize to organize collaborative teams in todays multigenerational and multicultural workplaces. Trainers and teachers can use this material to provide effective skills for managers that deal with a multi-generation of employees. Furthermore, educators can use appropriate teaching techniques with different generations of students since teachers of working adults are likely to have diverse generations of learners in their classes. There are at least four different generations in todays workforce that are categorized as traditionalists (Veterans), baby boomers, generation X, and generation Y individuals. Managers should be aware of the personality characteristics of individuals in all generations as well as their cultural backgrounds, and act accordingly. The document further discusses how decision-making, for managers of any generation, is a very critical and time-consuming procedure, and how managerial decisions do affect the companys processes dramatically. Managers should always make certain, regardless of their personal interests, likes and dislikes, that their decisions are appropriate for each generation of employees and their organizations. Organizational learning, from a systems perspective, is discussed as an effective method of understanding the processes and strategies suitable for an organization. In order to create a learning organization, managers need to emphasize teamwork and practice group activities that effectively involve people of all generations in the decision making processes. Following the eight facets of Values Driven Management can guide and focus everyones energies toward the common vision set forth by the company. Besides dealing with a multi-generation of employees, international managers face an even more complex task since they also deal with various cultures. Hence, a multi-cultural manager should acquire appropriate cultural knowledge regarding the local norms, mores and customs to effectively work with individuals of different generations throughout the world.

The prevalence of diabetes continues to increase worldwide, leading to a rising incidence of foot complications (neuropathy, angiopathy ulcus, infections). In the prevention of the diabetic foot complications the correct diagnosis of the actual conditions is essential, because the infected foot ulcers can lead to amputations of the lower extremities. Diabetic foot ulcers and infections are treated with daily wound care, antimicrobial therapy, surgical treatment, off-loading processes, hospitalization and rehabilitation. These processes are associated with high health care costs. In this paper the basic principles of prevention, classification and treatment of diabetic foot ulcers are summarized based on the publication of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF).

The method of researching the development of an innovative enterprise suggested in the paper shows two possible ways to perform it: firstly, when the Competitiveness Commission regulates the excess profits to avoid ageing of existing businesses, and secondly, when the process takes place without any interference, leading to accumulation of fictitious capital and avoidance of obsolescence. The methods allow calculating the pace of these processes. The method of researching the possible negative consequences of corporate innovative development is suggested. The following two elements are the methodological basis of the suggested method: development of the formalized economic conceptual framework and construction of generalizing model of technical change by Hicks, Harrod, and Solow. Classical technical change models were developed in the framework of production functions methodology based on the research of three main factors – capital and labor inputs, and output. The suggested conceptual framework largely eliminates these shortcomings. The use of formalized economic categories fundamentally changes the opportunities of modeling the production and financial-economic processes due to emerging opportunities to transfer from exogenous parameters and processes to consideration of their endogenous properties. One of the possible approaches to establishing the causes of fictitious capital accumulation and obsolescence of fixed assets of enterprises due to innovative activity in the singled-out conditionally closed system (industry, market, etc.) is outlined. The conditions and causes leading to the emergence of financial crises when fictitious capital grows by a significant amount are shown. The nature of the “dichotomy (duality)” of an innovative process is specified – the interests of an enterprise do not meet the public interests, so the country has to prevent the conditions of financial crisis emergence.

Meaningful stakeholder engagement is important to collaborative decision-making and to effective polycentric governance, particularly when managing cross-scale environmental issues like those involving marine migratory species. In this paper, we explore the barriers to, and opportunities for, stakeholder involvement in the governance of threats to marine migratory species in eastern Australia, using semi-structured qualitative interviews and a focus group, as an example of the generic problem of managing migratory species within a large range state with multiple jurisdictions. Respondents identified several barriers to, and opportunities for, improved stakeholder involvement in the governance of marine migratory species, corresponding to 4 main themes: decision-making processes, information sharing, institutional structures, and participation processes. Respondents indicated that the governance system protecting marine turtles, dugongs, humpback whales, and non-threatened migratory shorebirds in eastern Australia would benefit from the introduction of new information pathways, reformed institutional structures (including environmental legislation), and improved participatory pathways for non-government stakeholders. Such changes could help harmonise the process of managing these species, leading to more effective conservation management throughout their range.

Purpose – The current economic crisis increased the demand on management to improve process efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to identify and resolve inefficiencies within the car assembly system utilizing discrete simulation modeling and analysis in order to improve productivity at one of the original equipment manufacturers (OEM) body shops in North America. Design/methodology/approach – This research was driven by a manager’s recommendation from one of the Big Three (GM, Ford, Chrysler LLC) companies in order to improve operational performance. The data utilized in creating the simulation model was obtained from one of the assembly facilities that produce three different vehicles over a period of one year. All model simulation, inputs and outputs were discussed and agreed upon by facility management. Findings – The established base model was verified and validated to mimic the actual facility outputs indicating all process bottlenecks. Two model scenarios were considered: the first scenario focussed on the top bottleneck processes flexibility with a ROI of 497 percent, while the second considered changing the model mix percentage leading to a cost improvement of $1.6 million/annually. Research limitations/implications – The model only considered management decision on buffer sizes, batch size and the top bottleneck station alternatives to make improvements. Simulating improvements in labor efficiency, robots uptime, scrap root cause, and maintenance response to downtime where not considered. Practical implications – This paper indicated the importance of discrete simulation modeling in providing alternatives for improving process efficiency under certain financial limitations. Given the similarity of the automotive manufacturing processes among the various companies, the findings for this particular facility remain valid for other facilities. Originality/value – Investment cost and process improvement are currently the two biggest challenges facing operations managers in the manufacturing industry. This study allows managers to gain a broader perspective on discrete simulation ability to simulate complicated systems and present different process improvement alternatives.

The article examines the issues of managing the digital transformation of the Russian industrial sector. The author notes that a new content of the industrial development strategy is currently on the agenda a digital strategy, for the development of which there are a number of prerequisites: the availability of the Internet, the use of digital services, mobile devices, and other digital technologies. The article deals with the issues of digital transformation management and the directions of its development. The author reveals the advantages of implementing digital transformation, suggests directions for implementing the roadmap for digital transformation of the industrial sector, and identifies trends in the digital transformation of the industrial sector. It is noted that digital transformation begins with the creation of a digital platform where the interests of industry, the state and science are united. Digital platforms are proposed to be organized by type of economic activity (FEA), using digital ecosystems. Digital platforms are proposed to be created in the areas of digital transformation, such as: uber-ization, the Internet of things, neural technologies, Big Data, network interaction with partners, blockchain, crowdfunding. The article reflects that one of the types of digitalization is uber-the transformation of the economy, which represents a digital service for the provision of services, the rejection of hierarchical multi-level organizational structures, to production and management structures based on the blockchain. Uber-ization of the economy is a digital management service that includes a whole range of other digital services. In this article, the author proposes a model of digital transformation of the industrial sector of the Russian Federation based on the creation of digital doubles that allow using such advantages as reducing the time of business processes, increasing the accuracy of calculations, and improving the quality of work performed. Digital transformation forms new forms of organizational, innovation and management activities, takes a leading position in the development of domestic industrial potential, new competitive advantages by improving business processes for knowledge and information management, increasing the number of technological innovations, and filling them with professional competencies.

Purpose Consumers are inclined to join longer queues due to social interactions in service consumptions. This purchase behavior brings in operational challenges in terms of capacity planning, which affects consumers’ demand, leading to an unstable and fluctuated arrival process. This paper aims to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the arrival process of a service system with boundedly rational consumers whose purchase decisions are influenced by the queue length under social interactions. Design/methodology/approach Consumers’ bounded rationality is modeled based on the random utility theory. Due to social interactions, the equilibrium queue length and its interaction with the expected waiting time affect consumers’ value perception. The authors first analyze the optimal service capacity decision with or without considering the influence of social interactions in a static setting. They then focus on the dynamic characteristics of the arrival process by a one-dimensional dynamical model in terms of the arrival rate. Findings This paper finds that the service system can behave chaotic in terms of arrival rate dynamics under social interactions. The results highlight the dynamical complexity of a simple service system due to consumers’ behavioral factors and the influence of social interactions, which may be the critical drivers leading to fluctuated and uneven demand. Originality/value The findings demonstrate that due to consumers’ limited cognitive ability and the influence of social interactions, the demand to a service system can be stable, periodic or even chaotic in terms of the arrival process. This study provides an alternative explanation to the observed demand fluctuations in various service processes under the influence of social interactions, which is important for service providers to effectively manage service capacity to achieve a stable service process and improve operational efficiency.

Ecosystem fragmentation results in major changes in several environmental and biotic parameters that affect the ability of plant populations to persist. All stages of the plant life cycle may be influenced in either negative or positive ways by the changed biophysical settings caused by fragmentation and associated changes in the surrounding landscape. This may result in plant populations being lost or significantly reduced from patches of native vegetation, leading to the need for active management intervention. This intervention may include management of threatening processes, reversal of ecosystem degradation, or the reintroduction of plants of species that have been lost from an area. These management actions range from preventative management through to active restoration. In the present paper I explore the question of whether there is a limit to the degree of intervention that is desirable in conservation terms, beyond which we are no longer conserving but rather cultivating and gardening, i.e. creating an artificial and potentially unsustainable system. I discuss this question in relation to management of remnant vegetation in urban and agricultural settings and suggest that a careful mix of species-based and process-based management is required for us to succeed in the goal of biodiversity conservation in fragmented landscapes.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the number 1 cause of death globally. Risk factors for CVDs may trigger the development of pathological conditions to a certain degree. The cardiovascular continuum is a continuous chain of interconnected changes in the cardiovascular system from exposure to risk factors via the gradual onset and progression of CVD to the development of terminal heart damage and death. The continuous chain of interconnected changes in the structure and function of several body organs and systems at once within the continuum suggests the presence of common pathophysiological processes, mechanisms of development and progression of organ damages. The drug’s ability to affect all stages of the cardiovascular continuum defines the choice of modern pharmacotherapy for cardiological patients. Using drugs with multi-target (multi-purpose) action is one of the possibilities for optimizing pharmacotherapy. The provided results of clinical studies show that drugs meeting this requirement include ACE inhibitors (ramipril), beta-blockers (metoprolol), lipid-lowering drugs (combination drug rosuvastatin/ezetimib), allopurinol. The choice of drugs for pharmacotherapy of patients with cardiovascular diseases should be based on the presence and severity of all risk factors and associated conditions and taking into account the individual characteristics of the drugs. Patients with chronic heart disease usually need lifelong therapy, and search for the best individual treatment for each patient is crucial. Using drugs with multi-target (multi-purpose) action is one of the possibilities for optimizing treatment.

Although the literature revealed the challenges and drivers to implement Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the building design industry in general, to date, there are few established methods and processes to overcome challenges of BIM adoption in building design, especially in sustainable building design for managing the project. At the present, BIM adoption in building design at micro level, that is, the level of architects, mainly focuses on barriers with little attention to method and the process of implementing BIM. Moreover, there is lack of a robust research method, that is, mixed method, to systematically investigate the process of implementing micro-level BIM in building design, which is related to the factors, such as challenges and drivers to the challenges of BIM adoption. Furthermore, several studies have looked into micro-level BIM adoption in architecture firms, but few of them focused on sustainable design. This emphasizes a need to investigate and explore micro-level BIM implementation challenges alongside its drivers in building design and present methods and processes generated from architects’ perspectives to address the challenges during sustainable design for the project management, which is the aim of this paper. The research investigation was through a questionnaire that is followed by interviews with the leading architectural firms within the UK. The research reported in this paper is to present a clear view of challenges to micro-level BIM adoption and a framework/road-map to address the key challenges in managing sustainable building design projects, which are related to cultural resistance and culture change, top-down management support, current key challenges and drivers, and client and project managers’ interests. The methods and processes that enhanced the framework can be instantly adopted for building design and for architectural companies including small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The rapidly accelerating economic development of newly industrialised countries (NICs) has created far-reaching environmental problems. The new construction of numerous infrastructures and buildings, particularly in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry, has led to an exponential increase in the demand for raw materials and energy, which is leading to the depletion of natural resources. The approach to treating these buildings at the end of life has also raised concerns worldwide. Transforming the current linear development model into a circular economy is considered an effective solution. This paper reviews a broad range of relevant literature, extracting four key factors influencing building circularity (BC) from past studies. These factors are interpreted as four key processes dealing with building materials: pre-treatment, composition, decomposition, and post-treatment. We demonstrate how materials are treated throughout the building lifecycle to illustrate the interrelationships among these processes and to exemplify the potential of the key processes for effecting BC. Additionally, two examples are used to support the theoretical framework. This study intends to make contributions to circular economy theories and to provide references for policymakers and practitioners.

At the present stage of the development of the world economy, those agricultural companies that fully apply modern technologies have significant advantages. At the same time, today there are active processes of digitalization of all sectors of the domestic economy, specialized departments are being created, targeted programs are being developed and implemented, including in agriculture. Digitization of agribusiness is the result of the inclusion of digital technologies (including the use of local subsystems for managing technological operations) in various elements of the activities of an agricultural organization (production, processing, sale, supply and service) to create consumer value of products, starting from planning, organizing and implementing the production cycle , and ending with the satisfaction of consumer demand. At the same time, for the effective implementation of the digitalization process, it is necessary to recruit the staff of enterprises with the appropriate number of specialists. The theoretical foundations of training and employment of specialists in the field of information technology (IT), as well as methods of managing IT personnel in agriculture. The modern level of digitalization in Russia and other countries of the world is analyzed and compared. The level of employment of IT specialists in the context of various sectors of the country’s economy is considered. The analysis of the dynamics of the state of training information technology specialists in Russian universities, including indicators of admission, graduation, competition and the share of IT specialists in the total number. The situation with the training of students in leading universities is considered in detail. Regularities have been identified that reflect the annual volatility of the number of applicants with a general trend of moderate growth, a forecast has been made for maintaining the corresponding parameters of admission and release of students, the attractiveness of vacancies in the agricultural sector has been determined on the basis of a retrospective analysis of indicators characterizing the formation of human resources in the information technology sphere. A set of measures is proposed to increase the provision of the agricultural sector with highly qualified IT specialists.

Neurologic conditions such as stroke and traumatic brain injury are challenging conditions to study in humans. Animal models are necessary to uncover disease processes and develop novel therapies. When attempting to model these or other neurologic diseases, the accompanying anesthesia and analgesia create variables that are not part of the onset of the clinical disease in the human population but are critical components of the postinjury care both in humans and animals. To maximize model validity, researchers must consider whether the disease process or a novel therapy is being studied. Damage to the neurons of the brain or the spinal cord is not painful at the neural tissue itself, but alterations to nociceptive signaling along the pain pathway can induce chronic pain. In addition, trauma or surgery leading to the event is associated with damage to peripheral tissue. Inflammation is inextricably associated with tissue injury. Inflammation is known to evoke nociception in the periphery and drive long-term changes to neurons in the CNS. Analgesics and anesthetics alter these responses yet are required as part of humane animal care. Careful planning for effective drug administration consistent with the standard of care for humans and equivalent animal care is required.

Purpose Many power producers are looking for ways to develop smarter energy capabilities to tackle challenges in the sophisticated, non-linear dynamic processes due to the complicated operating conditions. One prominent strategy is to deploy advanced intelligence systems and analytics to monitor key performance indicators, capture insights about the behavior of the electricity generation processes, and identify factors affecting combustion efficiency. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to outline a way to incorporate a business intelligence framework into existing coal-fired power plant data to transform the data into insights and deliver analytical solutions to power producers. Design/methodology/approach The proposed ten-step business intelligence framework combines the architectures of database management, business analytics, business performance management, and data visualization to manage existing enterprise data in a coal-fired power plant. Findings The results of this study provide plant-wide signals of any unusual operational and coal-quality factors that impact the level of NOx and consequently explain and predict the leading causes of variation in the emission of NOx in the combustion process. Research limitations/implications Once the framework is integrated into the power generation process, it is important to ensure that the top management and the data analysts at the plants have the same perceptions of the benefits of big data and analytics in the long run and continue to provide support and awareness of the use of business intelligence technology and infrastructure in operational decision making. Practical implications The key finding of this study helps the power plant prioritize the important factors associated with the emission of NOx; closer attention to those factors can be promptly initiated in order to improve the performance of the plant. Originality/value The use of big data is not just about implementing new technologies to store and manage bigger databases but rather about extracting value and creating insights from large volumes of data. The challenge is to strategically and operationally reconsider the entire process not only to prepare, integrate, and manage big data but also to make proper decisions as to which data to select for the analysis and how to apply analytical techniques to create value from the data that is in line with the strategic direction of the enterprise. This study seeks to fill this gap by outlining how to implement the proposed business intelligence framework to provide plant-wide signals of any unusual operational and coal-quality factors that impact the level of NOx and to explain and predict the leading causes of variation in the emission of NOx in the combustion process.

At the legislative level of the Russian Federation, the concept of a banking process is not defined, there are no methods for managing such processes and calculating their cost. Consequently, banks in the Russian Federation manage the processes (their definition (concept), description, cost calculation, selection of criteria for priority optimization or redesign) according to the developed methodology. They also independently establish internal rules for the functioning of the process management system for all branches and other divisions. High-quality and systematic work with banking processes allows the process owner to choose a project approach or tools for its optimization or redesign, depending on the current state of the process, the level of its management, the place of preferential implementation of the process, the vision of its target state. Process management in the implementation of banking activities is becoming particularly relevant in the context of declining marginality of the banking business and/or focusing on the best customer experience of leading Russian banks.

The ethical regulation of social research in the UK has been steadily increasing over the last decade or so and comprises a form of audit to which all researchers in Higher Education are subject. Concerns have been raised by social researchers using visual methods that such ethical scrutiny and regulation will place severe limitations on visual research developments and practice. This paper draws on a qualitative study of social researchers using visual methods in the UK. The study explored their views, the challenges they face and the practices they adopt in relation to processes of ethical review. Researchers reflected on the variety of strategies they adopted for managing the ethical approval process in relation to visual research. For some this meant explicitly ‘making the case’ for undertaking visual research, notwithstanding the ethical challenges, while for others it involved ‘normalising’ visual methods in ways which delimited the possible ethical dilemmas of visual approaches. Researchers only rarely identified significant barriers to conducting visual research from ethical approval processes, though skilful negotiation and actively managing the system was often required. Nevertheless, the climate of increasing ethical regulation is identified as having a potential detrimental effect on visual research practice and development, in some instances leading to subtle but significant self-censorship in the dissemination of findings.

A survey of personality types using an online Jungian-based personality assessment tool was conducted, followed by an in-depth interview with selected managers.FindingsThe study provides the following evidence: the coherence between the perceived managerial practices and the theorized cognitive processes of each personality type and between the way the instrument measures personality types and the theorized cognitive processes.Research limitations/implicationsWhile the study faces an issue of data saturation, given the sample size, the study has conducted the process of triangulation by sampling managers with resembling cognitive processes as theorized (INTJ, with ENTJ; ISFJ with ESFJ). A broader implication is around the use of qualitative, phenomenological approach to the study of personality types and cognitive processes.Practical implicationsPromoting diverse ways of managing based on personality types, this paper includes implications specifically for developing managers in charge of core business processes in terms of flexibility when managing and leading a team.Originality/valueThis paper presents an account of how personality types (through their dominant cognitive functions) resonate with real-life managerial practices, connecting the descriptive nature of personality types and the normative nature of management.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the processes and relationships between school councils and school leadership teams in the local governance of 18 independent, faith-based schools in New South Wales, Australia. Design/methodology/approach A three-phase, mixed-method research design was used incorporating development of a conceptual framework for local school governance drawn from current literature, face-to face interviews with chairs of school councils and principals, and a subsequent survey of school council members and within-school leadership teams. Findings Noting a lack of research into the practices and processes of school council operations and their interface with school leadership, the study identified five key areas that were seen to be foundational to the effectiveness of local governance. Research limitations/implications The study contributes an Australian perspective to an international need to better understand local governance arrangements in school leadership and management. Practical implications At a practical level, the study provides valuable insights to principals, and to those aspiring to the role, on the nature of the relationship between the school council and school leadership teams. Social implications The study responds to a marked increase internationally in local governance arrangements for schools by way of school councils or boards. Originality/value A review of literature reveals that, somewhat surprisingly, there has been relatively little research undertaken in this key area of leading and managing schools.

We describe a successful way of presenting knowledge of soil management to Australian cotton growers. Previous soil management methods were costly, and often involved unnecessary tillage that further damaged soil structure. Other growers did not correct serious subsoil compaction. Poor control of paddock traffic was a widespread problem. We gathered available information on soil management from researchers, agronomists, and leading growers to present in a format that is easy to follow. We produced guidelines and 'rules of thumb' on best practices and published a manual called 'SOILpak, a Soil Management Package for Cotton Production on Cracking Clay Soils'. The manual was promoted at workshops on practical soil management. Assessments of yield trends and a recent survey of SOILpak clients showed that the manual had improved farming practices. By helping growers to make soil management decisions, the manual assisted the industry's trend towards adopting minimum tillage, permanent beds, and controlled traffic.

Design/methodology/approach An embedded single case study with multiple units of analysis was conducted. The main data were collected through semi-structured interviews with key respondents from seven leading chemical companies, three of which were founding members of the SA, while four were new members. Findings This paper shows that forming/joining an SA concerning sustainability-related supplier risk assessment, results in the reduction of task uncertainty and equivocality as well as the increase of information processing capacities. Based on the implemented sharing routines, a higher overall efficiency can be achieved. Moreover, the members benefit from an enhanced identification of varying stakeholder expectations, a facilitated capability building and a more comprehensive supplier risk assessment. In particular, the joint endeavors result in assessment processes of higher robustness, which provide outcomes of higher quality. Originality/value This paper is the first to investigate companies’ efforts toward improving their supplier risk management in the area of sustainability by establishing/joining an intra-industry SA. Organisations have over time adopted conservative, structured and controlled processes to manage and achieve goals set with their stakeholders. Contrary to that, an environment of disruption has emerged, that being a faster, less predictable and less certain environment than the previous fifty or more years. This environmental difference has emerged due to the interconnectivity of trade formed out of globalisation, technology, internet and social media. The historical organisational decision models and structures are perhaps too slow and conservative for a faster less certain new age. Whilst pandemic was considered but one disruption to consider for the new age, more guidance is required for those leading and managing organisations through the current specific Covid-19 pandemic, into the pending recovery and beyond. Whilst wide-scale jobs may be lost in this new future, new opportunities for entrepreneurs, creativity and skills will likely emerge. This article will research how disruption, pandemic in particular, is changing leadership and management practices. Additionally, this article recognises that many of the organisational structures and processes of today were originally designed over thirty to forty years ago, so may no longer be appropriate. The design aspects or organisations, decision models and dealing with stakeholders will likely need to change in a pandemic, so this paper will recommend new and modified ways for organisations to operate. This research will offer a theoretical solution to assist management and leaders adjust their business and decision models in a pandemic. The past operating organisational models may lack the creativity and flexibility necessary for a world that has locked down, works from home or have closed without notice at once. Leading and managing is so different in a pandemic, especially when so much has changed so quickly, so this article will contribute by recommending new organisational principles to work to.

Cost management is often viewed as a financial issue, but the leading organisations are driving cost-management cultures across their whole businesses. In the world of complex LNG and CSG capital projects, it is those companies that avoid cost escalation and will outperform their competitors. In the early stages of a project, the G&A expense line often gets disregarded as the focus is getting through FEED to FID and beyond. Experience shows that without rigorous processes and systems, G&A costs can grow significantly, often without real transparency of the activity that is driving these costs and from where they are being driven. The lack of transparency in the burdening of G&A costs can lead to an operator having to absorb tens of millions of dollars of un-budgeted expense or the non-op JV’s being burdened with higher costs. This extended abstract highlights some of the leading practices and examines some of the issues facing the LNG and CSG industry: Why do G&A costs get out of control so quickly on major capital projects? What can be done to ensure there are processes and systems in place to support a no-loss, no-gain cost-management philosophy? What are the key enablers to building a cost culture? What key performance indicators can operators use to help manage G&A costs during the major capital projects phase, to first gas and beyond?

AbstractBackground and Purpose – In this study we investigate determinants of customers’ quality perceptions in service processes which involve customer participation and customer to customer interaction (CCI). Building on existing multidimensional approaches to service quality we explore relevant quality aspects for related to the performance customer participation and CCI.Design/Methodology/Approach – The study builds on focus groups conduct with employees and customers of a leading provider of educational and science services, which offered a portfolio of service activities requiring very diverse levels of customer participation and CCI, to characterize service quality dimensions. Results – The study distinguishes three dimensions of service delivery quality: a dimension related to the providers’ direct performance; a second dimension relative to the performance of customers’ own participation in service activities, and a third dimension relative to the interaction with other customers. The work extends service quality literature by identifying new dimensions which affect service quality in service settings with active customer involvement. Conclusion – Service providers have been developing very diverse delivery processes, frequently inviting customers to have active roles in service production. Often, customers also interact with other costumers in service delivery. The paper provides a contribution to foster the debate about service quality frameworks, and aims to inform the design and the management of services where customer participation and CCI have a key role.

In contrast to theoretical work on goal pursuit within isolated teams, there is an absence of theoretical models focused on systems composed of such teams. In response, we propose a predictive model to improve understanding of the nature of motivational processes leading to performance in interdependent systems of teams. This model is grounded on goal hierarchy characteristics (goal level, priority, and degree of compatibility) and functional process interdependence (sequential, reciprocal, intensive) that differentially affect both goal setting and goal striving processes across component team and multiteam levels. The model also illustrates how goal choice and goal striving in multiteam systems (MTSs) can be viewed from multilevel and multiphasic perspectives. We discuss the implications of the model for understanding, researching, and effectively managing the motivational mechanisms underlying MTSs performance.

The objective of the Habitats project is to integrate research in the fields of ecological impacts and of environmental noise to develop management tools and processes to enable sustainable development. Rapid population expansion and economic development against the backdrop of climate and biodiversity crises presents major global challenges. Global society is dependent on ecosystem services, underpinned by biodiversity. In the UK alone, these ecosystem services are valued at £761 billion/year and human noise impacts will significantly degrade that value unless managed appropriately. We can no longer consider nature to be separate from our economy and society, it needs to be part of business, cultural and economic decision making. The Habitats project is leading the development of an international industrial and academic network to research and explore new ways and new technologies to better measure, understand and model the effects of noise on wildlife habitats. However, current noise pollution legislation is focused on humans; despite policy aspirations, there is no systematic approach to assessing, regulating, or mitigating noise impacts on wildlife. This paper will review the scientific evidence available for underpinning environmental noise legislation, regulation, and policy development for managing the ecological impacts of noise on wildlife habitats.

Background: Dyslexia is a specific learning disability affecting around 1 in 10 Australian adults. It presents unique challenges for employees in the workforce, yet community and workplace awareness of the challenges of dyslexia is limited. The aim of this preliminary research was to explore the experiences and perspectives of Australian employers and managers responsible for supervising employees with dyslexia in the workplace. Materials and Methods: Using a qualitative research design, we conducted in-depth interviews with four managers who had current or previous experience managing employees with dyslexia. We used a deductive approach to analyse the data and categorise responses to the study questions. Results: Participant responses indicated that there is a lack of awareness and understanding of dyslexia within Australian workplaces. Participants identified challenges facing employees with dyslexia in the workplace including, differing personal levels of confidence and comfort in disclosing disability; the possibility of discrimination, and a lack of inclusive organisational practices and processes. Suggestions for ways to improve workplaces for dyslexic employees included: additional support for leaders and managers to drive inclusive leadership, and additional training for leaders and managers on how to best support employees with dyslexia. Conclusions: While only a small sample size, this study indicates that further research is needed to better understand the working environment of Australian leaders and managers. It appears that leaders and mangers need skills and knowledge to better support employees with dyslexia and in doing so create more inclusive workplaces.

Background Discharge from the hospital is a high risk transition period for older adults at risk of falls. Guidelines relevant to physical therapists for managing this risk are well documented, but commonly not implemented. Purpose This project implemented an intervention to improve physical therapists' adherence to key guideline recommendations for managing risk of falls on discharge from one hospital. Data Sources A pretest-posttest study design was undertaken and was underpinned by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) to aid in the design of interventions to increase physical therapists' adherence to guideline recommendations and to identify barriers to these interventions. Data Extraction A multifaceted intervention was implemented, including the establishment of a governance committee, education sessions, development of a “pathway” to guide practice, modification of an existing standardized assessment proforma, development of standardized processes and indicators for handover, increasing availability of educational handouts, audit and feedback processes, and allocation of dedicated staffing to oversee falls prevention within the physical therapy department. Data Synthesis There were significant improvements in physical therapist behavior leading to key guideline recommendations being met, including: the proportion of patients who were identified to be at risk of falls (6.3% preintervention versus 94.8% postintervention) prior to discharge, an increase in documentation of clinical handover at discharge (68.6% preintervention versus 90.9% postintervention), and improvement in the quality of this documented clinical handover (34.9% of case notes met 5 criteria preintervention versus 92.9% postintervention). Limitations The approach was resource intensive and consequently may be difficult to replicate at other sites. Conclusions A multifaceted intervention underpinned by the TDF, designed to modify physical therapists' behavior to improve adherence to guideline recommendations for managing risk of falls on discharge from one hospital, was successful.

Abstract The liquidation of the mine is the last and natural stage of mining activity. The activities related to the revitalization and restructuring of hard coal mines are carried out by Spółka Restrukturyzacji Kopalń S.A. (SRK S.A.), as the legal successor of previous mining operations. The implementation of the mine liquidation process has not been the subject of scientific research so far aimed at rationalization and minimization of the costs incurred. Activities leading to the liquidation of the mining plants are the procedural nature, however, the mine liquidation is always a single case which has a result in diversifying the size of outlays. The support for the implementation of the process approach in the issue of mine liquidation in terms of rationalization and minimization of the costs incurred in SRK S.A. was to develop a method of managing the costs of liquidation processes with the software for evaluation of its size. The proposed method signals to the designer that the estimated cost of the process of liquidation of another mining plant deviates from the average values previously worked out by SRK S.A. The range of acceptable values results from the assumed coefficient of data variation.

Calcific tendinitis is the leading cause of shoulder pain. Among patients with calcific tendinitis, 2.7%–20% are asymptomatic, and 35%–45% of patients whose calcific deposits are inadvertently discovered develop shoulder pain. If symptoms are present, complications such as decreased range of motion of the shoulder joint should be minimized while managing pain. Patients with acute calcific tendinitis respond well to conservative treatment and rarely require surgery. In contrast, patients with chronic calcific tendinitis often do not respond to conservative treatment and do require surgery. Clinical improvement takes time, even after surgical treatment. This review article summarizes the processes related to the diagnosis and treatment of calcific tendinitis with the aim of helping clinicians choose appropriate treatment options for their patients.

Abstract This paper analyses how the profitability of public companies in the Federal Republic of Germany has been measured since the 1950s and under which conditions corporations were considered successful. For this purpose, textbooks and arguments of leading business economists, speeches and publications of managing directors and companies’ annual reports are surveyed, in order to identify trends and policy changes. The paper demonstrates that the introduction of shareholder value approaches, based on financial market data, in the 1990s led to a fundamental change in management practices, connected to innovative financial accounting techniques. Since then, companies’ profitability has been assessed in relation to benchmarks derived from financial market data. Financial markets thus became increasingly relevant for decisionmaking processes in the real economy.

The growing maturity and deployment of low-cost georeferenced sensors, navigation systems, fast wireless communication, cyberinfrastructure and the Internet of Things (IoT) is accelerating the speed of geographic data flowing from the environment and our capabilities for reacting quickly to geographic information, often automatically and in real-time. This is leading to the rise of real-time GIS and smart cities technologies. While reacting quickly to changing circumstances has value, there are potentials for unintended consequences and rebound effects resulting from our inability to build geographic knowledge quickly and the selective acceleration of societal processes. This report discusses why these unintended outcomes may occur, and suggests technical and scientific approaches for understanding and managing the potential impacts of fast geographic data.

Abstract In recent years, Medicare Advantage (MA) plan enrollment has increased, a trend that is expected to continue. Many skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) rely on MA managed care insurer referrals to maintain their census in a market with high competition for post-acute care patients. This study used semi-structured interviews to describe the relationship between MA plans and SNFs from the perspective of key decision-makers in SNFs. Twenty-three interviews were conducted with key stakeholders from 11 Denver Metropolitan area SNFs. A combined purposive-snowball sampling approach was used to identify and recruit select staff from the participating facilities. Interviews focused on the relationship between MA plans and SNFs, including mechanisms of control, power dynamics, and preferences for MA versus Fee-for-Service (FFS) Medicare patients. Key findings included: 1) challenges SNF staff had navigating MA plans’ case management processes, a key mechanism used by MA plans to influence the behavior of SNF decision-makers; 2) MA plans exercising power over beneficiaries’ length of stay, potentially leading to early discharge and heightened risk for rehospitalization; 3) SNF preference for admitting Medicare FFS over MA patients due to higher rates of Medicare FFS reimbursement and greater control over patient care. SNFs are increasingly reliant on MA plans for patient referrals and revenue. The themes suggest that this growing reliance may place SNFs at odds with MA plans on how best to manage overall patient care. It is therefore important that future research investigate how MA plans’ influence over care affects patient outcomes in SNFs and other post-acute settings.

Purpose Knowing the factors influencing the success of collaborative innovation is particularly relevant for both academics and practitioners. Nonetheless, many studies have regarded the megatrends influencing innovation imperatives, the development of co-innovation strategies, the selection of partners and the involvement of user communities, but not so much the understanding of how the co-innovation process is concretely designed and managed. Adding to extant research, the purpose of this paper is to explore how companies collaborate in co-innovation processes. Design/methodology/approach A longitudinal, single case study has been conducted on the co-innovation process between Loccioni, an Italian medium-sized, high tech family firm, and Pfizer, one of the largest companies operating in the pharmaceutical sector. Findings From the case study analysis, three main results have emerged. First, the role of medium-sized companies in leading the co-innovation process as both the initiator and orchestrator. Second, the interplay between the local and the global dimension of co-innovation and the importance of (un)formal roles in innovation. Third, the “double funnel” of co-innovation, linking both the technological and the relational dimensions. Specifically, the case highlights the relevance of the relational – beyond the technological – aspects of co-innovation, providing a relational model that links the geographical dimensions (local/distant) and the role of specific individuals. Originality/value The paper presents an example of how a medium-sized firm has implemented its co-innovation process, shedding new light on possible barriers and success factors that other smaller or similar companies may follow when dealing with large multinationals.

Today, when we observe and analyze many organizations in our immediate environment, and beyond, we can see their inability to keep up with the high pace of changes in their own environment imposed by market globalization, development of information technology and communication systems, lifestyle changes and the like. The situation with institutions and services that primarily deal with civil protection, as an indispensable element in the state administration system, is completely identical. Civil protection institutions and services are not a separate system within the social community that is immune to changes in the business environment and whose purpose is to exist for themselves. On the contrary, they are part of an integrated system of state administration that has a primary role in protecting and rescuing the population in emergencies. In order to be able to talk about advanced concepts of leading and managing a business organization as a whole in the modern age in which we live, it is necessary to keep up with the times, which means that the concept of quality should be advocated in the organization. An integral element of the quality concept is the continuous improvement of business processes, and in order for business processes to be improved, it is necessary, in the first step, to identify and select business processes that need to be improved
