Streszczenie:
Case reports demonstrate that embedded lead projectiles (bullets, pellets) have the potential to cause lead poisoning. They also show that the relationship between blood lead concentration and lead poisoning is the same as in lead poisonings of occupational origin and that latent periods between lodgement and the onset of lead poisoning varies from less than a half year to several decades. Nevertheless neither the quantitative relationships between projectiles and blood concentrations nor the number at risk and the number affected are known. The aim of this review is to show the limitations of case studies through the analysis of negative and positive case reports, diagnostic and monitoring methods, differences between bullets and pellets, and factors affecting the disintegration of projectiles and the distribution of released lead.

Rasheed, Tajudeen Olusegun. "Safety Practices on Lead Poisoning Among Battery Technicians in Lagos Nigeria". ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4018.

Streszczenie:
Maintaining due diligence on safety practices at the workplace of battery technicians is the most cost-effective intervention against lead-related hazards. The safety practice on lead poisoning in Nigeria is below average, and the compliance level is far from the expected target of 90%. Using Dejoy's workplace self-protective behavior theory, this study investigated multilevel factors that influence safety practices on lead poisoning and compared the rate of utilization of personal protective equipment by battery technicians in the organized and roadside settings. The study was a quantitative, cross-sectional survey design, and a multistage and systematic sampling technique was used to select 293 adult battery technicians aged 18 years and above. Hypotheses were tested with chi-square and multivariate logistic regressions at the significant level of p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval. The outcome of the safety practice status of battery technicians is 20%, and the rate of utilization of personal protective equipment is 18% in Lagos, Nigeria. Findings revealed that workplace conditions, blood lead levels, knowledge, education, and the rate of utilization of personal protective equipment are predictors of the safety practice status of battery technicians. There was no significant difference between battery technicians in the organized and roadside setting considering the perceived risk of lead poisoning and utilization of personal protective equipment. The positive social change implications of this study include recommendations for battery technicians to use the evolved alternative safety approaches to reduce lead-related hazards. Public health professional and policymakers should invest resources towards reducing the impact of lead poisoning on battery technicians at the workplace.

Streszczenie:
This brief calls for better safety standards on how automotive batteries are recycled in Asia’s developing countries to reduce harmful lead pollution and its associated health impacts. With developing Asia home to over 400 million children with potentially harmful blood lead levels, it explains how the open-air recycling of used lead-acid batteries (ULAB) contaminates air, soil, and water. Using Viet Nam and the United Kingdom as comparative case studies, the brief demonstrates why countries in the region should educate workers on ULAB recycling risks and look to remediate contaminated sites. It also emphasizes the need to hold manufacturers responsible for the entire life cycle of batteries, including the recycling process.

Streszczenie:
This project is driven by concerns over excessive cylinder lubrication in large bore two-stroke cycle natural gas engines. Excessive cylinder lubrication can lead to: (1) Increased operating costs due to high lubricating oil consumption, (2) Poisoning of catalytic converters, and (3) Increased pollutant emissions. These concerns can be addressed by reexamining lubrication rates and exploring advanced lubrication techniques. Catalyst poisoning and increased pollutant emissions occur when a portion of the cylinder lubricating oil in some form is passed through the cylinder and into the exhaust system. The lubricating oil may carry over into the exhaust system unchanged, or it may react to form other compounds. In this work the focus is on identifying the scope of the problem associated with cylinder lubricating oil carryover into the exhaust system.

This project is driven by concerns over excessive cylinder lubrication in large bore two-stroke natural gas engines (LBNGE). Excessive cylinder lubrication can lead to: - Increased operating costs due to high lubricating oil consumption. - Poisoning of catalytic converters. - Increased pollutant emissions. Development of an electronically-controlled, power-cylinder lubricator (ECPCL) is a likely solution that could decrease excessive cylinder lubrication. This lubricator would optimize cylinder lubrication by controlling both the injection rate and injection timing, relative to piston position.

Streszczenie:
The widespread use in modern medicine of hypnotics, sedatives, tricyclic antidepressants, antihypertensive drugs and antipyretics, even in therapeutic dosages, sometimes leads to adverse consequences for the patient. Accidental or intentional excess of therapeutic dosages leads to severe poisoning. This fact indicates the high relevance of doctors’ knowledge of any clinical specialty and the treatment of poisoning by these groups of drugs. This electronic educational resourse consists of six theoretical educational modules: poisoning with barbituric acid derivatives, acute poisoning with tricyclic antidepressants, acute poisoning with beta-blockers, poisoning with clonidine, acute poisoning with anti-tuberculosis drugs, acute poisoning with paracetamol. The theoretical block of modules is presented by presentations, the text of lectures with illustrations. Control classes in the form of test control accompany each theoretical module. After studying all modules, the student passes the final test control. Mastering the electronic educational resourse will ensure a high level of readiness to provide specialized toxicological care by doctors of various specialties.

Streszczenie:
The significant variety of properties and wide distribution of opiates and opioids in the modern pharmaceutical industry entail not only positive, but also negative consequences in people's lives. The constant search for new drugs entails the emergence of new substances with psychotropic effects. The widespread use of vinegar essence in the food industry, nitrogen oxides in agriculture, and the frequent appearance of carbon disulfide in everyday life create an increased risk to public health. Positional compression syndrome very often accompanies poisoning with psychotropic substances, which leads to a high risk of disability for victims or even death. This electronic educational resourse consists of seven theoretical educational modules: opioid poisoning, acute psychostimulant poisoning, vinegar essence poisoning, acute carbon monoxide poisoning, acute nitrogen oxide poisoning, acute hydrogen sulfide and carbon disulfide poisoning, positional compression syndrome.

Assessing the impact of heat treatment on antimicrobial resistant (AMR) genes and their potential uptake by other ‘live’ bacteria. Food Standards Agency, sierpień 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46756/sci.fsa.oxk434.

Streszczenie:
Addressing the public health threat posed by AMR is a national strategic priority for the UK, which has led to both a 20-year vision of AMR and a 5-year (2019 to 2024) AMR National Action Plan (NAP). The latter sets out actions to slow the development and spread of AMR with a focus on antimicrobials. The NAP used an integrated ‘One-Health’ approach which spanned people, animals, agriculture and the environment, and calls for activities to “identify and assess the sources, pathways, and exposure risks” of AMR. The FSA continues to contribute to delivery of the NAP in a number of ways, including through furthering our understanding of the role of the food chain and AMR.Thorough cooking of food kills vegetative bacterial cells including pathogens and is therefore a crucial step in reducing the risk of most forms of food poisoning. Currently, there is uncertainty around whether cooking food is sufficient to denature AMR genes and mobile genetic elements from these ‘dead’ bacteria to prevent uptake by ‘live’ bacteria in the human gut and other food environments - therefore potentially contributing to the overall transmission of AMR to humans. This work was carried out to assess these evidence gaps.
