In Germany, three groups can be identified who work in all-day schools and take on pedagogical tasks in extended education: Teachers, pedagogical staff, and staff without a pedagogical qualification (lay pedagogues). While the professionalisation debate on teachers and pedagogical staff already exists, there is a lack of knowledge on lay staff. In this article we consider the group of lay pedagogues. Findings from existing studies explore in more detail the expertise that personnel bring into all-day education.

Abstract Pei Xiu 裴休 (791–864) was a literati follower of Buddhist teachers, among whom the two most eminent were Zongmi 宗密 (780–841) and Huangbo Xiyun 黃檗希運 (?–850). These two teachers had notably different spiritual orientations: one was the synthesizer of Chan and Huayan teachings, the other a member of the more radical Hongzhou 洪州 school. Rather than passively patronizing Buddhist teachers, Pei Xiu served as an active agent of his own religiosity and influenced Buddhist communities broadly. Through examining Pei Xiu’s Quanfa putixin wen 勸發菩提心文 [Essay Exhorting the Generation of Bodhicitta], Chuanxin fayao 傳心法要 [Essentials of The Transmission of Mind], which he prefaced and edited, and his various prefaces and epitaphs written for Zongmi and other monks, this study scrutinizes the transformation of early Chinese Chan communities before they were reimagined as ‘mature’ and ‘classical’ in later times.

This article presents an overview of Project ELEECT (English Learners’ Educational Excellence Capitol Teacher Training Project), a U.S. Department of Education-funded program designed to prepare teachers in Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Pedagogy (CLRP) for multilingual learners (ML). The purpose of Project ELEECT is to promote educational justice for MLs by revising a Master of Arts + ESL Licensure program for pre-service teachers and creating a professional development program for in-service teachers. It prepares pre-service and in-service teachers of MLs in CLRP through teacher research, and specifically offers a novel professional learning tool, which we call Impact on Learning Studies (IOLS). This teacher research tool represents a framework for the systematic and intentional self-study of their teaching practices. In this article, we lay the foundations for a research agenda that investigates pre-service and in-service teachers’ understanding and implementation of CLRP, documents concrete examples of CLRP in various classroom contexts, and examines the efficacy of teacher research initiatives to prepare teachers in CLRP. Project ELEECT prepares teachers to invite students’ cultural and linguistic experiences into their classrooms, create spaces for CLRP, and foster critical consciousness in learning settings, thus taking a major shift towards cultivation of anti-racist dispositions in education.

Background: Certified training must be provided for lay vision screeners prior to their conduct of a vision screening programme. However, the effectiveness of trained lay screeners does deteriorate over time. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a recertification vision screening training module using the KieVisionTM Preschool Vision Screening Kit for preschool teachers in Malaysia. Methods: This was a randomised control trial. Fifty-nine preschool teachers previously enrolled in a Knowledge Transfer Programme were divided into a Study Group (n = 31) to receive recertification training and a Control Group (n = 28) to attend briefing sessions. Subjects was then asked to perform vision screening on 15 preschool children aged 4 years old–6 years old at their respective premises, then verified by optometrists after 2 weeks from the initial screening on the same children. Results: A total of 894 children were screened, with the Study Group and Control Group screened 49.7% and 50.3%, respectively. There was higher validity in vision screening findings from the Study Group (sensitivity = 66.7%, positive predictive value (PPV) = 61.5%) compared to the Control Group (sensitivity = 36.0 %, PPV = 40.9%). Conclusion: Teachers who received recertification training were more competent in detecting children’s vision impairment using KieVisionTM Preschool Vision Screening Kit. Thus, timely recertification training should be emphasised to ensure sustainable consistency and reliability of vision screening programmes conducted by lay vision screeners.

Internationally, there has been a major output of empirical research on Catholic education over the last two decades. However, it has not been accompanied by a similar corpus of related work indicating possible new directions such research could take, including those that could be undertaken by using a diverse range of methodologies on a wide range of topics neglected to date. This paper indicates one such direction that could be taken in relation to historical research on lay teachers in Catholic schools from the 1940s to the present. First, the historiographical work that has been undertaken on the history of teachers more broadly is considered. An overview on the official status of the laity and the lay teacher historically within the Church is then considered. Finally, an argument for the use of a «life story» research approach for the generation of research questions to investigate the experience of being a lay teacher in Catholic schools. The approach is suitable for «insider research», where the focus is on investigating issues that were of concern for participants, rather than on pursuing pre-ordained questions of interest to the researcher and which usually arise primarily from a reading of the relevant background literature only.

The objective of this article is to reflect upon the professional competences that university teachers require in order to respond appropriately to the demands of contemporary society. This is a specialized documentary review that seeks to lay a thematic foundation and theoretically define analysis categories. It was found that when the issue of teaching competences is addressed, usually priority is given to disciplinary and pedagogical skills, while social competences are neglected. However, since teaching is a collective social practice, the relationships and interactions between individuals are essential; hence, it is concluded that teachers should develop social competences that will prevent the limitation of their performance during the educational process, a limitation that can severely damage the comprehensive training of their students.Regarding the methodology, the criteria for the inclusion of the bibliography were mainly based on the relevance of the reviewed sources related to the topic under study (the search found that social competences are generally not considered when referring to the professional skills of university teachers) and on the theoretical perspective shared by several cited authors. Their current validation or the language in which they were published were considered, although, some recent studies in English were included.

This article examines the use of information and communication technologies in teaching and learning geography. The realities of modern educational process in Ukraine, in particular distance learning and military events, force Ukrainian teachers to look for opportunities for remote interaction between teachers and students. Taking into account that teachers are increasingly turning to the electronic form of providing educational material to students, an example of the application of an innovative approach to the study of geography, namely the use of WEB-mapping capabilities, is given. Attention is focused on the use of a new type of a learning tool to help all participants of the educational process − an online platform for studying geography and history. In order to provide students with high-quality electronic content in a cartographic form, it is proposed to create a so-called “Teacher’s Electronic Cartographic Online Platform”. The staff of the State Research and Production Enterprise “Cartography”, on the resources of which the “Teacher’s Electronic Cartographic Online Platform” functions, managed to initiate the process of its creation and lay the foundations for the functioning of these types of electronic educational resources. The teacher’s cartographic online platform is presented as a set of modern electronic educational cartographic guides, posters and interactive maps. The presented online platform was approved, tested and received numerous subscribers in the time of the global pandemic and war. The purpose of this publication is a detailed analysis of the content and description of the principles of functioning of the teacher’s electronic cartographic online platform, a study of its advantages over traditional manuals in organizing and conducting geography education. Pedagogical possibilities and methods of studying geography based on the presented online platform are revealed. The general features of the design of electronic materials in such platform are described. This publication also visualizes the interface of the online platform being created and gives an example of designing interactive maps in it. Prospects for the development of the teacher's electronic cartographic online platform and filling it with new content are given.

Context: Visual impairment is a major healthcare burden worldwide. The vision screening program was supposed to be conducted routinely; however, the shortage of healthcare personnel posed a significant challenge. Aims: This study was conducted to compare the visual acuity examination results of elementary school students when examined by trained teachers as lay screeners and general practitioners (GPs). Settings and Design: This was a cross-sectional study involving 2056 students from 19 elementary schools under one primary healthcare center in Gianyar. Materials and Methods: All students included in the study underwent a basic visual acuity test using the Snellen’s Chart at a distance of 6 m. The test was performed two times, once by teachers and once by GPs. Statistical Analysis Used: Data analysis was performed using Cohen’s Kappa interrater reliability. Results: The total number of study participants was 2056 students. The mean age of the screened students was 9.43 ± 1.69 years, and most of them were male (52.4%). The estimated number of children needing further eye examination and referred to the ophthalmologist was 253 (12.31%). The agreement between visual acuity examinations conducted by teachers and GP was found to be almost perfect, as indicated by Kappa values of 0.859 for the right eye, 0.856 for the left eye, and 0.878 for both eyes, and these were statistically significant (P < 0.001). Conclusions: The high agreement value of visual acuity examination between teachers and GP shows the feasibility of involving teachers as lay vision screeners, which can elevate the number of children screened.

While firm in his support for the national teachers unions, PDK’s Joshua Starr argues that local unions often stand in the way of positive changes to the teaching profession. Of particular concern, right now, are chapter leaders who refuse to consider changes to rigid “last-in, first-out” rules, which — during fiscal crises — protect the jobs of veteran teachers at the expense of newer hires. In recent years, many districts have made it a priority to diversify the teaching force, Starr notes. If local unions remain inflexible, then pandemic-related layoffs will undo that progress, forcing superintendents to lay off many of the teachers of color they’ve recently hired.

I draw upon Eileen Schell’s notions of “maternal pedagogy” and an “ethic of care” to analyze archival material from the National Education Association and Educational Testing Service pilot “lay reader” programs of the 1950s and 1960s. I argue that there are striking similarities between the material and social circumstances of these postwar lay readers’ labor and that of contingent faculty in first-year composition today. I additionally contend that lay reader program narratives and policies evince a longer historical trajectory of labor problems in the teaching of writing than we typically recognize. Thistrajectory illustrates a continual need for various types of “help” in achieving effective writing instruction, yet paradoxically values labor-intensive models for teachers that emphasize the personal (and interpersonal). Such conditions create a problematic “motherly” discourse for the discipline that is magnified by the gendered imbalance already typically found in the first-year writing teacher workforce.

The paper investigated the motivation of teachers to continue teaching at the basic school level. Utilising a mixed-methods approach, basic school teachers' motivation to continue teaching at that level after obtaining degree certificate, was analysed. The study found that contrary to the findings of previous studies that teaching in basic schools is not the preference of teachers with degree certificates, many graduate teachers intend to stay in basic school teaching. However, this intention is influenced, mainly, by altruistic and intrinsic motives rather than extrinsic considerations. The desire to contribute to the development of children and society; helping to lay a solid foundation for education in Ghana; and engaging in programmes pursued at university, were stated as strong motivating factors. Implications are drawn and recommendations for attracting and retaining graduate teachers at the basic school level are made.

In a broad sense, conflict is an interactive process displayed through incompatibility, disagreement or dissension among social entities such as individuals, groups, organizations, etc. In a society in a changing, based on competitiveness, conflict is an integral part of human relationships, as it is a natural component of everyday life. New perspectives on conflict agree that its presence is natural and inherent in the human activity. The educational context is, inevitably, a space of conflicts. According to the actors involved, there has been established the following typology of conflicts: (a) conflicts among students, (b) conflicts among students and teachers, (c) conflicts among teachers and parents, and (d) conflicts among teachers. This paper aims to study the sources of conflict between students at the gymnasium and high school levels to lay emphasis on the aspects that could generate situations of risk or even educational crisis. The starting point in the research was specific literature, the observations and the experiences in the classroom. The items identified were a competitive atmosphere, intolerance, deficient communication as a result of linguistic ambiguity, inappropriate expressions of emotions, aggressiveness, lack of skills in solving conflicts, abuse of teacher’s authority, etc. A questionnaire-based survey was developed, and the respondents were instructed to answer depending on how often they met the situations described by the indicators in the questionnaire. The results obtained were processed using the SPSS analysis. Further studies on conflicts between teachers and students/parents, teachers/peers can complete the research.

Discourse on 'problematic behavior' of the young in adolescence period is often present in lay, media, professional and scientific public. In this research, we performed empirical testing of the psychological concept of 'storm and stress', which is manifested by stereotypes about adolescents as rebels. The goal was to establish whether teachers hold stereotypes about younger adolescents as a social group and what the content of the stereotype is. Research participants were 193 teachers teaching the seventh grade in ten Belgrade primary schools. Factor analysis method established the presence of several factors, which reflect the psychological content and meaning of teachers' stereotypes about younger adolescents. The results of our research point out: (a) that stereotypes of teachers about younger adolescents stand in partial correspondence with the content of a widely distributed concept of 'storm and stress'; (b) that this concept is mostly loaded with a negative perception of pupils on the part of teachers and (c) that teachers less often perceive pupils through the prism of some positive qualities. That is, teachers think that these positive qualities are not 'typical' qualities of adolescents if they are observed as a group. Interviewed teachers hold stereotypes about younger adolescents, but intensity and valence of stereotypes vary depending on the nature of obtained factors.

A sample of eighty Israeli in-service teachers filled out a questionnaire assessing their beliefs about the existence and the anthropogenic origin of climate change, their knowledge about the causes and consequences of climate change and the actions which can be taken to remediate it, as well as their level of concern about it and their readiness to act and teach in a climate-friendly way. The results show gaps in knowledge especially regarding the consequences of climate change, and misconceptions about the causes of climate change. The anthropogenic nature of climate change is well admitted. The percentage of teachers ready to take action to slow down climate change is smaller than the percentage of teachers understanding climate change. There is a significant correlation between knowledge about the consequences of climate change and concern about it and readiness to act. These results lay out the path for possible improvement of climate change instruction in teachers’ preparation programs.

The movement for school improvement based on common academic standards for all students cannot succeed, the author argues, without raising teachers to a new level of professionalism that equips them not only for effective teaching to higher standards in the classroom but for active public leadership of statewide school reform efforts. In turn, such professionalism will be possible only when six different constituencies put an end to their relative isolation and come together, to educate each other to the changes needed and to collaborate in bringing them about: teachers themselves; education school deans and faculties; chairs and members of university arts and sciences departments; local school administrators and school committee members; state departments of education; and lay members of state education and university governing boards.

The paper will look briefly at the programmatics of P4C, and its current mandated status in the education system in the state of Victoria, Australia. It will then move to exploring how the study of teachers’ perspectives, through analyses of their beliefs and values, adds significant value in education, particularly in the context of P4C. It concludes by analysing some recent P4C research that has begun to explore teachers’ perspectives, before finishing with suggesting future research directions that build on these previous studies, and which promise lay important groundwork for extending the reach of P4C into educational systems.

Programs focusing on health and nutrition help ensure children’s early development. Nutrition knowledge of families and teachers has a significant impact on children’s eating habits and dietary patterns. Recently, there is an increase in the number of daycare schools in North Cyprus, offering services between 8 AM to 6 PM and provide two main meals and two snacks during the day. This study was carried out to understand the nutrition-related knowledge of kindergarten teachers and mothers of children aged 2-5 and their attitudes towards nutrition, and find the deficiencies in the knowledge and attitude of both groups as they significantly impact dietary habits of children. The 121 participants from the Kyrenia District, Turkish Republic of North Cyprus were enrolled, 79 were educators in the kindergarten and 42 were mothers. It was observed that there is no statistically significant difference between mothers' and teacher's knowledge and attitude of the nutritional content of foods. Our study also showed that though mothers were educated and possessed knowledge of nutrients yet their attitudes did not reflect it. Our study revealed that the current knowledge status of teachers and caregivers, as well as their attitudes towards various aspects of diet, are not sufficient to lay the foundation of healthy eating.

Most teacher layoffs during the Great Recession were implemented following inverse-seniority policies. In this paper, I examine the implementation of a discretionary layoff policy in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Administrators did not uniformly lay off the most or least senior teachers but instead selected teachers who were previously retired, late-hired, unlicensed, low-performing, or nontenured. Using quasi-experimental variation within schools across grades, I then estimate the differential effects of teacher layoffs on student achievement based on teacher seniority and effectiveness. Mathematics achievement in grades that lost an effective teacher, as measured by principal evaluations or value-added scores, decreased 0.05 to 0.11 standard deviations more than in grades that lost an ineffective teacher. In contrast, teacher seniority has limited predictive power on the effects of layoffs. Simulation analyses show that the district selected teachers who were, on average, less effective than those teachers identified under an inverse-seniority policy, and also reduced job losses.

The "General High School Biology Curriculum Standards (2017 Edition, 2020 Revision)" requires teachers to learn to use real-life materials for teaching, to present the curriculum content in a situational manner, and to lay a solid foundation for students’ lifelong development. By investigating the current application of scenario creation in high school biology classroom teaching, it was found that teachers have a one-sided understanding of scenario creation and there are misconceptions in their teaching use. Students’ learning methods are not flexible enough, their autonomous learning ability is weak, and classroom learning efficiency is low. Therefore, teachers should follow the principles of objectivity, authenticity, emotion, and development when creating situations. Teachers can use pictures, videos, life phenomena, explore practice, and create scenarios through research cases. This article analyzes the current application status of scenario creation and develops a set of principles and strategies for scenario creation, which can provide reference and inspiration for biology teachers in frontline high schools.

Young teachers play a pivotal role in workforce development within vocational colleges, yet often face challenges adjusting to their new responsibilities. This study aimed to identify barriers through a questionnaire survey of 11 young teachers. Findings revealed the greatest difficulties lay in adapting instruction methods to meet the diverse needs of learners, navigating constraints on research due to insufficient laboratory facilities and funding, and uncertainty around career progression pathways. To address these issues, we proposed three countermeasure strategies. First, vocational colleges should strengthen partnerships between industry and education through joint training programs and applied research laboratories to enrich curriculum design and enhance teachers’ practical skills. Secondly, establishing formal mentorship programs pairing new educators with experienced mentors can facilitate the transition into their roles and offer careerguidance. Third, colleges should actively encourage the involvement of young teachers in skills competitions to cultivate their practical skills. This research highlights the multifaceted challenges faced by young teachers and the imperative for targeted solutions to strengthen the vocational education workforce.

Purpose: To describe teacher’s integration of activity into general education classroom time (ie, movement integration—MI). Design: Cross-sectional, observational. Setting: Eight elementary schools in a rural, low-income school district. Participants: Elementary classroom teachers (N = 48). Measure: Classroom teachers were observed using the System for Observing Student Movement in Academic Routines and Transitions (SOSMART) on random, unannounced days during the 2015-16 academic year. Analysis: Descriptive statistics were calculated for the frequency and types of MI being used. Results: Of the 9398 SOSMART scans completed, students engaged in movement in 41.3% of the scans. Student movement was observed to be teacher directed in 14.4% and nonteacher directed in 26.9% of scans. Nonteacher-directed movement consisted mostly of transitions ( M = 99.5%) in which movement occurred as a result of preestablished classroom rules, protocols, and organization. Conclusion: This is one of the first studies to provide objective information about MI. These descriptive data lay the groundwork for future correlational and experimental research that can lead to the development of effective intervention design to increase MI use in schools.

The recent refugee crisis presented a huge challenge for the Swedish mental health workforce. Hence, innovative mental health workforce solutions were needed. Unaccompanied refugee minors (URM) are a particularly vulnerable refugee group. Teaching Recovery Techniques (TRT) was introduced as a community-based intervention utilising trained lay counsellors in a stepped model of care for refugee youth experiencing trauma symptoms. Professionals (e.g., teachers, social workers) can deliver the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-based intervention after a brief training. A point of debate in this workforce solution is the readiness of trained lay counsellors to deal with potentially demanding situations like disclosure of suicidal ideation. This study aimed to explore the TRT trained lay counsellors’ experiences of procedures upon URM’s disclosure of suicidal ideation. Individual semi-structured interviews with TRT trained lay counsellors were conducted, then analysed using systemic text condensation. The analysis revealed four themes: “Importance of safety structures”, “Collaboration is key”, “Let sleeping dogs lie” and “Going the extra mile”. Dealing with suicidal ideation is challenging and feelings of helplessness occur. Adding adequate supervision and specific training on suicidal ideation using role play is recommended. Collaboration between agencies and key stakeholders is essential when targeting refugee mental health in a stepped care model.

Teacher-written editorial columns in local newspapers can challenge the broad, simplistic conceptions of the profession that have been encouraged by contemporary politics and that obscure the real work of teachers. The publication of such columns written by a diverse group of teachers in the West Texas Writing Project has proved an important tool for fostering a stronger sense of professionalism in individual teachers and for promoting their expertise to the lay public and other educators in their community. It has also afforded teachers new models and tools for teaching writing to their own students. This article argues that English education faculty and teacher educators are uniquely qualified to help teachers develop their political voices and write about education issues for the public, and it provides readers with methodologies for preparing teachers to do so. In addition, an analysis of four teacher-written columns sets out specific roles teachers can envision and assume in advocating for school reform and in taking greater ownership over their work. For teachers such as these, an enhanced professionalism that comes from writing for the public about their education objectives is an important step in developing teacher leadership skills.

This study's purpose was to establish teachers’ views towards their involvement in the choice and development of curriculum support materials and implementation of the secondary school curriculum in Kenya. The study involved 342 secondary school teachers and employed a descriptive survey research design. Data from principals and teachers was collected using an interview schedule and questionnaires, respectively. Analysis of the collected data was carried out using inferential and descriptive statistics. The study's findings showed that there existed a statically significant relationship between teachers’ views on their involvement in the choice and development of curriculum support materials for secondary school curriculum. However, teachers’ voice in the process of developing curriculum support materials was at the minimum: to a small extent (M=1.97). The study recommends that teachers who are key curriculum implementers should be engaged in planning and developing the curriculum in all stages for effective curriculum delivery in schools. KICD (Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development) should lay better strategies to involve teachers in the curriculum development process. The findings of this study will, hopefully, supplement government efforts directed towards the improvement of curriculum delivery in Kenyan secondary schools.

This paper aims to investigate student teachers' reflections on their pre-service teaching practice. The research question is: What are student teachers' perceptions of their cognitive, behavioural and affective involvement in initial teaching practice? The participants in this study were 53 student teachers of English language and literature at a Croatian university. A questionnaire was administered to the student teachers upon the accomplishment of their school-based teaching practice. The questionnaire consisted of 18 items accompanied by a five-point Likert scale. Six items in the questionnaire referred to the student teachers' perception of their cognitive involvement when observing their mentors teach, six items referred to the student teachers' perceptions of their verbal and non-verbal behaviour when teaching their own lessons, and six items addressed student teachers' attitude towards the assignments they had during their teaching practice. Findings indicate high cognitive involvement of the student teachers during their observations of mentors’ lessons. The majority of the student teachers reported they had made an effort to understand the teaching process in terms of the principles and decisions that lay behind the procedures used by the teacher and the selection of a particular teaching strategy. The results show very high student teachers' involvement in some behavioural aspects of teaching, such as paying attention to learners' participation, and student teachers' most enjoyment in teaching their own lessons.
