Purpose: The study is focused on the question of how principals in Swiss compulsory schools evaluate civic and parental participation in education governance. Public management reforms in Switzerland have led to the implementation of semiautonomous school administration and the encouragement of professional leadership. Thus, the traditional role of school boards has come under scrutiny. Research Methods/Approach: Using the theoretical framework of actor-centered institutionalism, the study compares patterns of education policies in Swiss cantons and analyzes data of a principals’ survey by structural equation modelling. Findings: The views of principals concerning lay participation in school governance reveal a multifaceted picture. Principals affirm lay participation on the levels of the right to be informed, the right to be heard, and the right to volunteer; they regard with skepticism the authority of lay participants to make decisions. Implications for Research and Practice: Principals tend to insist on professional discretion and opt against the blurring of boundaries between schools and their social environment. This implies the self-justification of professional leadership. That such self-justification does not derive from a neutral perspective, but is an expression of stakeholder interests, has to be taken into account.

Currently, many districts and states are pursuing reforms that focus on holding principals accountable for school performance. While effective schools research has established that strong principal leadership affects school academic achievement at least indirectly, this relationship is more complex than originally thought. Personnel decisions about principal effectiveness made by educational policymakers or lay-controlled school site councils should be made only after careful consideration of research on the relationship between principal instructional leadership and school outcomes. This article presents data from a study to determine whether principal instructional leadership is predictive of school outcomes and discusses the implications of the research for developing school improvement strategies.

PurposeThis article explores Jamaican secondary school principals' use of mindfulness meditation as a spiritual well-being strategy to manage their work-related stress and anxiety.Design/methodology/approachThe author used qualitative semi-structured interviews to collect the data from 12 Jamaican secondary school principals working in schools supporting rural, urban and inner-city school communities. Thematic coding of the analyzed data was used to understand how principals deal with their work-related stress and anxiety.FindingsThe findings indicate that Jamaican school principals are experiencing work-related stress and anxiety as a result of work intensification, and use mindfulness meditation/prayer as a spiritual coping strategy. The data indicate that principals' primary source of support is their spiritual belief – faith in God and mindfulness meditation/prayer – when dealing with issues related to well-being.Originality/valueThis article explores the use of mindfulness meditation as a non-secular coping strategy, and focuses on an understudied area of educational administration research: Jamaican school principals' well-being. The findings can help inform future education and health policy around occupational health and well-being for professionals, and lay the foundation for greater studies on principal well-being in Jamaican and the Caribbean more generally.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to use the Objective Knowledge Growth Framework (OKGF) in the development and maintenance of the Canadian Principal Learning Network (CPLN) to advance principals’ knowledge and skills in the area of decision making. First, the paper presents the inception of the CPLN, to assist principals in making decisions and resolving common problems. Second, the evolution of the CPLN web site is presented and recount the challenges faced and collaborative solved by principals. Finally, the paper describes the OKGF based on the critical rationalism of Karl Popper and how principals, engaging and interacting in an online learning community (CPLN) informed their decision-making process. Design/methodology/approach – The paper mindfully assembled an international team of researchers with administration experience, curriculum knowledge and pedagogy, and whose research interests lay in educational leadership, education administration, change theory, educational policy and professional learning. Also in addition, principals who were current graduate students, and new researchers also joined the research team. Findings – The CPLN web site using OKGF, is a step forward in providing principals with a structure and a venue to be reflective and collaborative. However, getting them to interact with each other in a collaborative, reflective online learning community was not an easy feat at the beginning (Lieberman and Miller, 2008; Louis and Kruse, 1995; Schmoker, 2006; Wagner and Kegan, 2006; Bryk et al., 2010; McLaughlin and Talbert, 2002; Stoll and Louis, 2007). The study shows principals find the need for a place to reflect, discuss, experiment, practice and learn and, for this group of principals, that place is the CPLN. Originality/value – This study provides a model for principals’ learning in an online learning community using the OKGF. As well, it shows that powerful leadership does not just take place during preparation programmes, but that principals need to continue to learn as they lead in their respective schools (Mitgang and Maeroff, 2008). Sharing of the challenges faced and the learning that occurred principals are capable of addressing not only the challenges posed in their schools but also, as numerous researchers note (Fry et al., 2006; Levine, 2005; Mitgang and Maeroff, 2008), of surviving the job themselves.

This paper reports on an investigation of the attitudes of 225 principals employed in Queensland state schools, toward inclusion of students with disabilities. The justification for the study lay in the important role of school principals in implementing social justice strategies, together with the need to focus on attitudes toward inclusion, as opposed to mainstreaming or integration. The approach to inclusion taken in this study was the placement of students with disabilities and special needs in classrooms with children who do not have such disabilities or needs, together with the provision of support for the included student. A 30‐item scale measuring attitudes toward inclusion was developed and administered. In an attempt to identify the influence of factors which might be seen to influence inclusion attitudes, the following demographic variables were used for analysis: principals’ age and gender; type and size of school; previous and present experience with students with disabilities; and special education qualifications. The results showed the large majority of school principals were positive about inclusion. It was found that the demographics age, gender, and school size had no impact on attitudes toward inclusion. Using a two‐factor solution and a clustering of types of disability, significant differences emerged on the basis of type of school (secondary vs primary), type of disability (a combination of sensory, learning, intellectual, speech) vs aggressive behaviour, and previous teaching experience with students with disabilities. In terms of the implementation of inclusion, all respondents were equally cautious, pointing to the need for further training of teachers, aides and principals, and additional resources to ensure effective inclusion.

Why do people work? Economic theory generally, and the principal–agent model specifically, emphasize the role of material incentives. But many academics, for example, work diligently year after year for a nearly fixed real salary, continuing to work hard as they approach retirement, although financial incentives are usually absent. We will argue that while economists have been right to focus on incentives, they have been wrong to focus so exclusively on material incentives. While workers appreciate monetary rewards, they also get utility from what (they believe that) others think about them. We lay out a body of evidence that, taken as a whole, makes a strong case that respect matters in the workplace, above and beyond material rewards. We discuss evidence that workers respond to attention, symbolic rewards, and trust—and even that material incentives in some cases lead to less effort. Finally, we argue that many of these observations can be captured in a standard principal–agent model, once the principals and the agents are assumed to care about respect or esteem as well as money.

AbstractThis study attempts to broaden the usual understanding of the Chinese and Japanese Pure Land traditions by delineating two orientations toward Pure Land devotionalism: A lay orientation which is usually considered the whole of Pure Land devotionalism, and a monastic orientation which is often excluded from the history of Pure Land piety. This distinction makes clear not only the greater breadth of the Pure Land movement, but the way in which its growth was influenced by cross-currents between its two wings. In part one of the paper, the two orientations are typologically differentiated by considerations of (1) their views of history and of the human condition, (2) the types of buddha-reflection (nienjolnembutsu) they taught, and (3) their soteriologies. In part two we then sketch the history of these two forms of Pure Land devotionalism in China and Japan down to the twelfth century. We propose four stages of development: (1) A stage of initial formulation of the principals and styles of the monastic and the lay oriented traditions by Lu-shan Hui-yuan [334-416] and T'an-luan [c. 488-554], respectively; (2) a stage of clear differentiation of the two traditions represented by Chih-i [538-97] on the one hand, and by Shan-tao [613-81] on the other; (3) a stage of integration of the two forms, in China by Tz'u-min hui-jih [680-748], and in Japan by Genshin [942-1017]; and (4) a stage of radical re-differentiation of these by Hônen [1133-1212] in Japan.

This article uses edvertising as a vehicle through which to examine autonomy and control for key agents in education when market-like reforms are combined with privately led management of schools. We begin by outlining the philosophical foundations of school choice from the perspective of autonomy and control, and then lay out the case of edvertising. Guided by Cribb and Gewirtz’s theoretical discussion of autonomy and control, we explore degrees and types of autonomy and control for various agents in schools. We then examine the differences between levels of autonomy for key agents—schools, principals, teachers, parents, and the State—as idealized in the philosophical underpinning of market-based policies with the actual autonomy exhibited with the introduction of edvertising.

This study's purpose was to establish teachers’ views towards their involvement in the choice and development of curriculum support materials and implementation of the secondary school curriculum in Kenya. The study involved 342 secondary school teachers and employed a descriptive survey research design. Data from principals and teachers was collected using an interview schedule and questionnaires, respectively. Analysis of the collected data was carried out using inferential and descriptive statistics. The study's findings showed that there existed a statically significant relationship between teachers’ views on their involvement in the choice and development of curriculum support materials for secondary school curriculum. However, teachers’ voice in the process of developing curriculum support materials was at the minimum: to a small extent (M=1.97). The study recommends that teachers who are key curriculum implementers should be engaged in planning and developing the curriculum in all stages for effective curriculum delivery in schools. KICD (Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development) should lay better strategies to involve teachers in the curriculum development process. The findings of this study will, hopefully, supplement government efforts directed towards the improvement of curriculum delivery in Kenyan secondary schools.

Abstract This paper reports an experiment designed to assess the influence of workplace arrangements on the reactions to (the absence of) control. We compare behavior in an Internet and a laboratory principal-agent game where the principal can control the agent by implementing a minimum effort requirement. Then the agent chooses an effort costly to her but beneficial to the principal. Our design captures meaningful differences between working from home and working at the office arrangements. Online subjects enjoy greater anonymity than lab subjects, they interact in a less constrained environment than the laboratory, and there is a larger physically-oriented social distance between them. Control is significantly more effective online than in the laboratory. Positive reactions to the principal’s choice not to control are observed in both treatments, but they are significantly weaker online than in the laboratory. Principals often choose the highest control level, which maximizes their earnings.

This work has conducted an analysis of Spanish Communication journals in terms of their level of internationalization and the collaborative models used by their authors, by assessing 1,182 articles published between 2007 and 2011 in the seven toprated Communication journals according to a set of six quality indicators. The ultimate goal has been to perform a data processing in order to detect the degree of inclination of international authors to publish their works in Spanish journals in the years covered by this study. Secondly, the study draws a profile of coauthorship patterns focused on geographical and institutional alliances. The results show there is no clear and convincing signs of evolution towards a desired level of internationality. Concerning coauthorship, although the results indicate a willingness on the part of authors to chart a path of wider geographical and institutional collaboration, unique authorship continues to be the preferred form of publication. Finally, the work shows that investigative alliances are confined to Spain and when they go international collaborations are almost exclusively with Latin American authors. En este estudio se ha llevado a cabo un análisis de las revistas científicas de Comunicación españolas en términos de su grado de internacionalización y de los modelos colaborativos utilizados por sus autores. Para ello se han analizado un total de 1.182 artículos publicados entre 2007 y 2011 por las siete revistas españolas mejor valoradas en términos de calidad. El objetivo principal ha sido realizar un tratamiento de los datos con el fin de observar si en los años comprendidos en el estudio se ha producido un incremento del interés de autores internacionales por publicar en las revistas españolas. En segundo lugar, se ha dibujado un perfil de los patrones que rigen las coautorías en términos geográficos y de alianzas institucionales. Los resultados no han permitido apreciar síntomas de evolución hacia los grados de internacionalidad deseados. Por lo que se refiere a las coautorías, aunque se percibe una voluntad por parte de los autores de trazar un camino de mayor colaboración institucional y geográfica, se observa que sigue predominando la autoría única y que las alianzas se concentran dentro del territorio español y se opta casi exclusivamente por Latinoamérica cuando se trata de llevar a cabo colaboraciones internacionales.

El objetivo de este artículo fue realizar un diagnóstico para conocer de qué manera se están financiando las empresas dirigidas por mujeres y cuáles son los principales obstáculos para acceder a fuentes de financiamiento. Se recolectaron los datos aplicando un cuestionario a una muestra de 272 empresarias voluntarias de la Ciudad de México. Los principales hallazgos muestran que predomina el tamaño micro, en sectores servicios y comercio, y no cuentan con personalidad jurídica. Las empresarias no acceden a las ayudas gubernamentales y privadas como consecuencia de la falta de participación en redes empresariales, por lo que prefieren financiarse con recursos propios y con familiares y amigos. Por esta razón, solo una tercera parte han accedido a fuentes de financiamiento externo, y el principal obstáculo para obtenerlo es el exceso de requisitos, entre ellos, ser propietarias de bienes inmuebles y contar con garantías. Estos hallazgos ponen en evidencia la falta de apoyo para las mujeres empresarias, las cuales requieren tanto capacitación como financiamiento para hacer competitivas a sus empresas.

Summary An interactive computer programme, based on linear-elastic laminated plate theory, is used to study the effect of lay-up geometry on first ply failure loads. A maximum allowable strain failure criterion is used and a number of design problems are considered where searches are made for optimum lay-up configurations for typical carbon fibre reinforced plastic properties. The relative weakness of this material in tension across the fibres, is found to have a significant effect on first ply failure loads. An optimisation technique based on principal load directions is introduced and compared with the familiar 0/90/±45 lay-up configuration.

Il existe plusieurs données relatives à la région du Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean dans le domaine de la santé et sécurité au travail (SST). Cependant, elles sont éparses et parfois incomplètes. Elles ne permettent pas de poser un regard global et exhaustif sur l’état de la situation ni de renseigner, avec précision, sur l’ampleur des principales problématiques et leurs interactions. L’objectif principal du présent article est de dresser un portrait de la région dans le domaine de la SST. La recherche réalisée est de nature exploratoire et descriptive. Elle a donné lieu à l’analyse secondaire de données publiées par des institutions nationales et des organismes régionaux.

<p>This study aimed to develop a competitive strategy development model based on the new 7S's in Satya Wacana Christian High School (SMA Lab) Salatiga. Tthis study is research and development, where the study was performed only at the fifth stage, the potential and problems, data collection, product design, design validation, and revision of the design. This research was conducted in Satya Wacana Christian High School (SMA Lab) Salatiga. Interviews were conducted with principal, vice principals curriculum, student section, public relations, teachers, administration of the employees, students and parents to know the framework of the new strategy 7-S's on Satya Wacana Christian High School. While study documentation was conducted to determine the profile of the school, student profile, the work program of principals, vice-principals work program of curriculum, student affairs, and public relations. After the data collected, then the data was reduced, summarized, categorized, synthesized and presented in narrative form and tables. Model-based development of competitive strategy the new 7-S's on Satya Wacana Christian High School consists of four rare developments, the formation of the team, defining the vision and mission, the analysis of the new 7-S's, and strategy development. Formulation of a strategy based on the analysis of the new 7-S's on Satya Wacana Christian High School consisted of three frameworks, namely Superior Stakeholder Satisfaction which includes the satisfaction of customers and workers, positioning program, and strategic cooperative.</p>

O Limiar Anaeróbio (Lan) pode ser determinado por protocolos que utilizam concentrações fixas de lactato sanguíneo como o OBLA (Onset of Blood Lactate Accumulation) e os que utilizam procedimentos mais individualizados, como o Lactato Mínimo (Lacmin). Independente do método, a mensuração da capacidade aeróbia através do Lan nesses casos exige a utilização de equipamentos sofisticados, além do elevado custo por atleta, o que torna sua aplicação limitada. Como alternativa, um dos testes não invasivos mais empregados no meio esportivo é o de 12 minutos proposto por Cooper. O objetivo principal do presente estudo foi comparar a intensidade de exercício obtida pelo teste de 12min com as intensidades correspondentes ao Lan obtido pelo protocolo adaptado ao de Tegtbur et al. (1993) (Lac minat) e pelo OBLA em futebolistas profissionais. Para tanto participaram 16 atletas pertencentes a uma equipe profissional filiada à série A3 do futebol paulista. Cada atleta foi avaliado nos três protocolos, com intervalo mínimo de 48 e máximo de 72 horas. Os resultados mostraram diferença (p < 0,05) entre as velocidades (km.h-1) obtidas pelo teste de Cooper (15,09 ± 0,94) e OBLA (14,28 ± 1,02); entretanto, esses testes apresentaram correlação significativa. Cooper e OBLA não apresentaram correlação com o Lac minat, mas as velocidades foram similares com esse protocolo. Dessa maneira, a partir da análise de regressão entre os valores de Cooper e OBLA foi possível determinar uma equação de correção que permita, através do teste de Cooper, a obtenção da intensidade correspondente ao Lan determinado pelo OBLA em futebolistas profissionais.

The potential of nondestructive prediction of egg freshness based on near-infrared (NIR) spectra fingerprints would be beneficial to quality control officers and consumers alike. In this study, handheld NIR spectrometer in the range of 740 nm to 1070 nm and chemometrics were used to simultaneously determine egg freshness based on marked date of lay for eggs stored under cold and ambient conditions. The spectra acquired from the eggs were preprocessed using multiplicative scatter correction and principal component analysis (MSC-PCA). Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) was used to build identification model to predict the category of freshness, while partial least square regression (PLS-R) was used to determine the marked date of lay. The performance of LDA model was above 95% identification rate in both calibration and prediction set for the eggs stored under ambient and cold storage. For eggs stored in ambient storage, LDA had 95.54% identification rate at 5 principal components, while at cold storage LDA has 100% identification rate at 5 principal components for determining the marked date of lay, and partial least square regression (PLS-R) gave R = 0.87 and RMSEI = 2.57 for ambient storage and R = 0.88 and RMSEI = 2.66 for cold storage in independent set, respectively. The results show that handheld spectrometer and multivariate analysis could be used for rapid and nondestructive measurement of egg freshness. This provides a novel solution for egg integrity prediction along the value chain.

We develop a theoretical framework to investigate the effect of information asymmetry between the two principals on the common agent’s incentives to provide an effort. We find that the agent’s effort to the poorly-informed (PI) principal is optimal, while his effort to the well-informed (WI) principal is not. Given that the valuable resource, i.e., the agent’s effort, should flow into the person who has higher ability, our results imply that the asymmetric information between two principals generates an efficiency loss within the organization. In addition, we examine whether this inefficiency is attenuated by changes of the relative weight of the agent’s profit set to each principal. The result shows that unless the WI principal solely determines the agent’s profit, the efficiency loss within the organization does not disappear. This finding corroborates that as long as the PI principal exists within the organization, the inefficiency might be inevitable. Our research not only provides new insights to the agency literatures but also offers useful information regarding the efficiency of organizational structure.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo examinar si resulta viable el proceso ejecutivo arbitral en Colombia y estudiar los principales cuestionamientos que surgen en torno a esta posibilidad, a través de un método deductivo y de análisis crítico. Esto incluye explorar su verdadera utilidad, los requisitos que se predicarían del pacto arbitral ejecutivo y las pautas principales en caso de una eventual regulación normativa respecto del tema. Como principal conclusión se arribó a que no existen impedimentos normativos ni de la naturaleza jurídica misma del arbitraje nacional en Colombia que vayan en contravía de la viabilidad de un proceso ejecutivo arbitral. No obstante, deberá existir una regulación al respecto de forma previa.

The purpose of this article is to examine when a right to set off independent cross demands may be available in a case in which an agent acting on behalf of a principal has contracted with a third party. Three particular situations are considered. The first involves the series of cases dealing with undisclosed principals, in which the third party was not aware at the time of the contract that the person with whom he was dealing was merely acting as an agent on behalf of another. The principal subsequently sues the third party on the contract, and the question is whether the third party may bring into account a debt owing to him by the agent on a separate and independent transaction. The second situation arises when the agent, rather than the principal, is the person in whose name the action against the third party is being prosecuted. The third party may wish to set off in that action a debt owing to him by either the principal or the agent on another transaction. Finally, the question of a right to set off independent cross demands may arise in an action brought by the third party against the agent.

This article reports the findings of a qualitative study that examined what it means to be a principal in the context of rurality. We argue that principals in the 21st century encounter complex work situations that make it hard for them to manoeuvre. Furthermore, for principals in the context of rurality, such complexities pose multiple dilemmas, given that rurality exposes principals to multiple challenges. Using a case study within an interpretive paradigm, we interviewed and observed five principals from rural schools in the Limpopo province. The study found that principals’ leadership focuses dominantly on administrative tasks. It further identified social and institutional complexities that principals encounter and argues that these complexities compel to treat rural schools as systems. While we hail this view of schools, it emerged that some units of the system appear to be thwarting the progress of principals in leading rural schools. We conclude that, at times, principals’ leadership in the context of rurality can be defined as a leadership that shuns policies and issues of social justice for the purpose of finding what works in their contexts.
