Most work on modal indefinites has focused on a small sample of languages, and has therefore provided only a limited picture of the cross-linguistic empirical landscape within this domain. Although much progress has been made in trying to determine the properties along which modal indefinites can vary, the development of a semantically based typology of modal indefinites (and of modal expressions more generally) will benefit from the consideration of data from a broader sample of languages. This chapter situates the properties of a Japanese existential construction (the so-called wh-ka indeterminates) in the broader typology of modal indefinites by taking into consideration some of the parameters of variation that have been discussed in the literature.

This chapter draws up the abiotic frame for organisms set by the physical and chemical properties of a specific ecosystem. The abiotic frame is a combination of several features, including wind, turbulence, temperature and light, but also by nutrient status, pH and oxygen supply. Based on this abiotic frame, large-scale movements, as well as stratification phenomena of lakes are discussed. The importance of the surrounding land, that is, the catchment area, is stressed; specifically, how the catchment area may strongly affect the physical and chemical features of the lake or pond. In addition, this chapter explains how lakes and ponds have been, and still are, formed in the landscape and how organisms handle the abiotic frame.

This chapter examines the depiction of the fifth-century tragic poet Aeschylus in Aristophanes’ Frogs by paying particular attention to the play’s engagement with space, especially the space of the earth below, from which the poet is welcomed back to Athens in the finale. It offers new arguments for connecting Frogs to the cult of Aeschylus’ tomb in Sicily, including the play’s engagement with the volcanic properties of the Sicilian landscape and with the knowledge that volcanic soil harbours productive and beneficial, as well as destructive and deadly, forces. It argues that understanding hero worship in terms of fertility, prosperity, well-being, health, and their opposites is particularly revealing in Aeschylus’ case, because these concepts played a key role in Aeschylean dramaturgy, especially in connection to the Aeschylean images of nature and the earth. This leads to a new interpretation of the relationship between Aeschylus’ biography, his literary reception, and his cult.

Widely credited for the revival of feature-length animated filmmaking within contemporary Hollywood, computer-animated films are today produced within a variety of national contexts and traditions. Covering thirty years of computer-animated film history, and analysing over 200 different examples, The Computer-Animated Film: Industry, Style and Genre argues that this international body of work constitutes a unique genre of mainstream cinema. It applies, for the very first time, genre theory to the landscape of contemporary digital animation, and identifies how computer-animated films can be distinguished in generic terms. Such stars eventually found cinema to be a useful space to extend their creative practices, and the motion picture and recording industries increasingly saw cinematic rock stardom as a profitable means to connect multiple media properties. This book examines how casting rock stars for film provided a tool for bridging new relationships across media industries and practices. Rock Star/Movie Star offers a new perspective on the role of stardom within the convergence of media industries. While hardly the first popular music culture to see its stars making the transition to screen, the timing of rock’s emergence and its staying power within popular culture proved fortuitous for a motion picture business searching for its place in the face of continuous technological and cultural change. At the same time, a post-star-system film industry provided a welcoming context for rock stars who have valued authenticity, creative autonomy, and personal expression. This volume synthesizes current understanding of the ecology of Alaska's boreal forests and describes their unique features in the context of circumpolar and global patterns. It tells how fire and climate contributed to the biome's current dynamics. As climate warms and permafrost (permanently frozen ground) thaws, the boreal forest may be on the cusp of a major change in state. The editors have gathered a remarkable set of contributors to discuss this swift environmental and biotic transformation. Their chapters cover the properties of the forest, the changes it is undergoing, and the challenges these alterations present to boreal forest managers.
