Streszczenie:
Scholars have considered Italian chamber recitative laments only a transitional phenomenon between madrigal laments and laments organized on the descending tetrachord bass. However, the recitative lament is distinguished from them by its characteristic attitude toward the relationship between music and text. Composer of Italian chamber recitative laments attempted to express more subtle, refined and sometimes complicated emotion in their music. For that purpose, they intentionally created discrepancies between text and music. Sometimes they even destroy the original structure of text in order to clearly deliver the composer's own voice. The basic syntactic structure is deconstructed and reconstructed along with their reading and according to their intention. The discrepancy between text and music is, however, expectable and natural phenomena since text cannot be completely translated or transformed to music and vice versa. The composers of Italian chamber recitative laments utilized their innate heterogeneity between two materials (music and text) as a metaphor that represents the semantic essence of the genre, the conflict. In this context, Italian chamber recitative laments were a real embodiment of the so-called seconda prattica and through the study of them, finally, we more fully able to understand how the spirit of late Renaissance flourished in Italy in the first four decade of the seventeenth century.

This essay, which is at once a literary critical examination and a theological exploration of the Hebraic scriptural book of Lamentations in relation to ancient Sumerian lament, employs a mixed critical approach (e.g., form, feminist, postmodern, reader response), to address various lyrical, contextual, and thematic elements common to both the biblical Lamentations and the older Sumerian compositions. Specific focus is given to issues of gender and gender-malleability, as well as the notion of "transgression" and the various meanings that may be attached to this word in various contexts, theological or otherwise. Also addressed is the means by which the lament genre reflects/reveals the ways in which individuals and communities attempt to construct meaning, or find solace, in the face of human suffering.

The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate if the iconographic scheme of the funeral lament found in the Mahãparinirvã of Buddha Sãkyamuni scenes had a foreign origin, that is the depiction of the Greek próthesis - laying in state. This theme was developed during the 1st and 3rd centuries AD in Gandhãra, the norwest frontier of South Asian subcontinent. The Documental Corpus of this research is composed of an Indo-Buddhist and a Greco-Roman portion, systematized in a Data and Image Base. Archaelogical and textual evidence is assembled. The formal depiction of the funeral lament is a visual expression of the funeral ritual, understood as a rite of passage. Two diferent theoretical structures are combined to establish the basis for an analysis of the funerary images investigated in the research: the Archaeology of Image and the Archaeology of Death. Archaeological analysis with a long duration perspective is undertaken, permitting the inference of fundamental changes in the iconographical genesis. The funeral praxis of the societies who contributed to the development of the Gandhãran repertoire is reconstructed. Both Greek and Vedic-Brahmanic sources reveal parallel mourning rites of their dead. Schematic and thematic analysis made it possible to verify the extent of assimilation of the Greek próthesis scheme in the development of the Mahãparinirvã depiction; the adaptation of this scheme to the indo-buddhist theme; and the development of this depiction in other Indian and Asian regions. Through this theoretical approach we are able to analyse changes in the textual and iconographical discourses about Buddha Sãkyamuni obsequies and to reveal which aspects of the social persona of the founder of Buddhism were favoured after the Mahãparinirvãna. Buddhist discourse, which had a proselytizing character associated with the necessity of creating a buddhist identity, developed an idealized narrative of its founder\'s obsequies. Sramana Gautama\'s social persona was modified through the centuries and reelaborated on the basis of the heroicized figure of the Vedic-Brahmanic cakravartin. This was used to legitimize the discourse engendered by monastic communities while they became more hierarchical. Gandhãran iconography is part of this stage of development of Buddhism, in which some of these doctrinal changes were already incorporated in the discourse about the Mahãparinirvã of Buddha Sãkyamuni. From this period on high expenditure in the symbolic apparatus was observed as well as a decrease in the iconographical emphasis in death and lament in favour of transcendence

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: South Africa faces many challenges, as a country. Our communities are struggling with many issues such as poverty, inequality, rape, abuse, violence, corruption and many more. Yet, our faith community seems reluctant to lament these issues during their worship services. This research looks specifically at the practice of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa. The question that this research wrestles with is: “Given the challenging times that we live in, in what way could a re-discovery or a re-claiming of lament in liturgy, against the background of healing and hope, obtain new meaning in our congregations?” The assumption of the research is that if the church wants to be relevant in the lives of their members today, she would need to revisit and reclaim the process of lament in the liturgy. It could further be argued that a re-thinking and a re-introduction of lament in liturgy could have far-reaching and enriching implications in the life of the faith community, especially where the healing of memories is concerned. Part of the research was a literature study while another section consisted of empirical studies. Congregations from the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa, in the Western Cape, took part in the studies. The main focus of the research was descriptive empirical and the information gathered had to be interpreted. Through the normative task, theological reflections could be carried out and finally possible criteria could be deduced in terms of how lament could be re-integrated into existing liturgies of our church.

Torr, Stephen Charles. "A dramatic Pentecostal/Charismatic Anti-Theodicy : improvising on a divine performance of lament". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3681/.

Streszczenie:
By engaging with Kevin Vanhoozer’s Theo-dramatic paradigm for understanding the metanarrative of salvation history, this thesis sets up and answers the question: What does it mean to produce a fitting Pentecostal/Charismatic performance in the face of seemingly innocent, meaningless suffering when God appears to be absent? The answer offered – classified, in reference to previous and current responses to the problem of evil and suffering, as an ‘Anti-Theodicy’ – provides Biblically rooted, systematic guidance for such a performance by proposing an improvisation on the divine command performance of Jesus during the suffering experienced in the Easter event. In proposing such an improvisation, it is argued that the practice of lament, so prominent in the Old Testament, becomes a Christologically qualified and justified practice to be used in the current scenes of the drama in response to the type of suffering in question. However, rather than simply arguing for recovery of this practice alone, a pneumatological twist is offered in which the Spirit is understood to be given as an aid to help with the practice of lament, post-ascension. In addition, practical suggestions are made regarding how the use of testimony in Pentecostal/Charismatic communities could be modified in the light of this thesis.

In this work the author looks for to rescue the reading that Calvin made of the Psalms of lament. It has as intention to present an introduction to the Calvin s hermeneutics. It calls attention for the fact of that although the great contribution of Calvin, its hermeneutics still is, in many aspects, stranger in Brazil. The author makes an attempt to establish the influences on Calvin s thought that had contributed for his hermeneutics. It continues demonstrating the importance of the authority of the Bible for Calvin. After that he presents the main points of Calvin s hermeneutics and for a better understanding, he divides them in presuppositions, principles and approaches. In the last chapter the focus is in an analysis of Calvin s hermeneutics, having the modern study of Psalms as aid. Finally, it presents an attempt of dialogue between Calvin s hermeneutics and contemporary Brazilian Protestantism. This dialogue is presented in the form of some challenges.

This study explores the ways in which Israel understood Yahweh to be present by focusing on those psalms of lament which report that God is silent, absent, or hidden and which present him with memories of his presence to save. The study begins by examining the use of memory recitals of Yahweh's creation, the exodus experience of Israel, and the personal experiences of the writer as the primary resources for approaching God in the psalms of lament. Special attention is given to the tension created by the psalmist between the present experience of God's absence and memories of his presence to save. This is then followed by a survey of current writings on God's presence and absence. Next, the study explores issues in Psalms research which relate to the theme of God's presence and absence as it is expressed in the Psalms. Attention is given to the problem of speaking of God acting in human history and to the debate over whether the Psalms have their origin and use primarily in the cultic setting or in the private lives of the community. Also, various understandings of the experiences of presence and absence are considered. This is followed by an exegetical study of seven psalms, with particular attention being given to the tension between experienced absence and remembered presence, the move from lament to praise, and the response to God's salvation of offering testimony before the great assembly. The final part of the study explores the psalmist's use of experiences of reality, memory, testimony, and story as a means of approaching God in the silence in light of the preceding exegetical study.

Streszczenie:

This dissertation addresses the role and functions of silent prayers of lament and sorrow in light of individual and communal suffering of black women due to their triple oppression of sexism, racism, and classism. Silence is used theologically in two respects: (1) it refers to the rarity of articulated sentences, but not to the absence of sound; and (2) it refers to the various forms of lament from the disenfranchised that historically and contemporarily are silent within the dominant theological discourse. Silence is the intimate communication which may be quietness or the audible sounds and symbolic actions that may not follow normal rules of speech that persons use to convey their deepest thoughts and most intense feelings, including pain and anguish to God. A Pentecostal Womanist methodology utilizes pneumatological transformation of pathos as a theological framework to examine the ways marginalized people deal with oppression. The Holy Spirit effects change in the act of lamenting prayers by turning the expressions of sorrow, anguish, and afflictions toward the triune God, but also serves as the catalyst for imparting glimpses into the fellowship of Christ’s suffering and power of resurrection (Philippians 3:10). Orthopathos is a pneumatological transformation of suffering experienced by marginalized groups. Silent prayers of sorrow and lament have been foundational in empowering African American communities.

The myths were later strengthened in the 1930s cultural literary movement which placed the 'ordinary bloke', and his traditions, at the centre of importance in New Zealand society. While this literary movement diminished towards the 1970s, it continued to exert a powerful influence in New Zealand up till the 1980s when authors, such as Greg McGee, sought to challenge the relevance of this nationalism and definition of masculinity. The intention of this thesis is not only to consider the mutually reinforcing areas of masculinity and rugby in generating a distinctively New Zealand identity, but more importantly to demonstrate how perceptions towards masculinity have been reviewed and reevaluated since the late 1970s. Rugby has also had a role in challenging and undermining those myths of identity. In order to chart the shifts in these perceptions, the thesis will not only focus on Greg McGee's Foreskin's Lament and its subsequent revision in 1985,but also on Whitemen. Old Scores, Skinand Bone and the accompanying literary criticism which deals with all of these texts to destabilise the myths and suggest where masculinity now stands in New Zealand.

This paper proposes a reading of the qînh (\"elegy\") that David wrote in honor of Saul and Jonathan (2 Samuel 1: 17-27). Begins with research of this genre within the Hebrew Bible, identifying the main features of it and comparing it to related genres in an attempt to understand its social function in biblical times and find possible reasons for its reduced presence in the Hebrew Bible. Also notes how this lament becomes evident traits of the character David, which enhances understanding of the reports contained in the books of Samuel, which tell his ascension to the throne and his reign. Finally, it presents an analysis of the chosen poem and the narrative space in which it emerges.

The Psalter has formed the basis of Judeo-Christian worship since ancient times. It has served, and continues to serve, individuals and communities of faith as a foundation for communal and personal devotion. As a devotional tool it is unique in that it provides prayers which address God directly concerning the whole gamut of life experience. While the Psalms can be examined and analysed as a literary text, they must be used and experienced by people to more fully discover and recognize their power in providing a pathway for expressing life experience. The lament psalms are of particular interest in this regard. There appears to be a reluctance, in some quarters, to employ them as an expression of prayer. As a result, the lament psalms as a way of engaging with experiences of personal distress, and voicing the reflections and responses such experiences produce, have often been ignored. This study suggests that psalms of lament provide a framework for expressing personal distress in the context of prayer. The framework, identified as a matrix of lament, consists of various modes of articulation characterized as expressing, asserting, investing and imagining constellations. The study examines what happens when individuals, who have first been made aware of the matrix of lament and its constellations, use lament psalms for prayer. Praying of lament psalms in this study is embedded in a prescribed process through which participants engage with their experiences of personal distress. As a result of such a process any significant psychodynamic changes which may take place can be observed, examined and explored, thereby, highlighting the efficacy of using lament psalms as a form of prayer. The study achieves this by examining the reflections and responses of selected individuals to see whether the process does in fact facilitate changes in the individual’s levels of distress, sense of personal control over distress and the nature of relationship between the individual and God. The reflections and responses also provide some indication of how the process might ‘birth’ a fresh perspective on personal distress for those who choose to incorporate these psalms into their journey of faith.

The thesis considers the changing nature of funerals carried in England over the last twenty years and a possible response by Church of England ministers. Those changes are outlined in terms of the changes in venue of funerals, the changes in content and the changes in officials conducting funerals. As a theological basis for a response, the thesis examines the work of Hans Urs von Balthasar, and in particular his book Mysterium Paschale. Balthasar considers each of the three days of Easter in turn, finding particular power and importance in Holy Saturday. It is this weight that he gives to the day in which Jesus is actually dead that is important in forming a liturgical response in the carrying out of funerals. One commentator describes a Christian funeral as a remembrance of an individual’s death in the context of the Easter event: key to what we do as Christian ministers is remind people of the hope that we have because of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. However, whilst the proclamation of the meaning of Easter Sunday is vital in any Christian funeral, just as important is a taking seriously of Good Friday and Holy Saturday. These days remind us of the importance of grief and mourning in funerals. The thesis examines both the formal and informal content of funerals conducted by church ministers in England today to see how they give an appropriate understanding of the death and resurrection of Christ. The appropriate liturgical response to mourning is lament and, having considered how the three days of Easter are reflected in the actual content of the funeral, the final chapter considers the biblical notion of lament and how it may provide resources for funeral ministry.

Comentaristas e exegetas bíblicos analisam estas vozes sob diferentes perspectivas.

An interesting feature in the Psalter, which has been the subject of much scholarly attention for almost a hundred years now, is the sudden change of mood in the lament psalms. Unfortunately, this subject has been approached only in terms of the movement lament-praise. As the very term that has come to be associated with the subject reveals - 'Certainty of a Hearing' - lament psalms are always expected to move to praise or to some kind of resolution. Whilst not denying the presence of a movement towards praise, this dissertation seeks to offer a new approach by arguing that we do not only have a 'Certainty of a Hearing'; we also have an 'Uncertainty of a Hearing'. We do not only have a movement from lament to praise; we also have a reverse movement from praise to lament, a return to lament after praise and an alternation between lament and praise. It is important that we highlight these other movements. For focusing only on the movement towards praise actually leads to an undermining of the value of lament. Since lament is viewed as "always underway" (to use Westermann's words) towards praise, lament comes to be regarded simply as something to be done away with, praise being the goal, the more vital element. But by highlighting the other movements, the element of tension and uncertainty which forms a central part of the lament is restored. The study focuses on an analysis of the psalms containing the other movements or 'uncertainty of a hearing': Psalms 9/10,27,40,12, 28,31,35). Two related passages outside the psalms are also examined - Jer 20: 7-18 and Lamentations 3. A review of previous approaches and an analysis of representative psalms containing the movement lament-praise (Psalms 3,6,13) are provided at the beginning.

Old English literary studies is a fascinating field of research which spans many various approaches including philology and linguistics as well as literary and cultural theories. The field is characterised by a certain conservatism, what in this thesis is referred to as tradition. This thesis examines the scholarship on The Wife's Lament and Wulf and Eadwacer, projecting its cumbersome affinities with tradition as a conservative force as well as the resistance against it. The investigation focuses mainly on two aspects of scholarly research: the emergence of a professional identity among Anglo-Saxonist scholars and their choice of either a metaphoric or metonymic approach to the material. A final chapter studies the concomitant changes within Old English feminist studies. The thesis also summarises the approaches to points of ambiguity in the poems, and provides a comprehensive bibliography of scholarship on the two texts.

Streszczenie:
This thesis establishes the influence of the Jewish wisdom tradition on the shaping of the earliest christology. A concept which invests Jesus with Wisdom’s function as ‘Schöpfungsmittler’ appears already in the earliest Christian sources (1Cor 8:6; Col 1:15; Hebr 1:3; John 1:1-3), and the early patristic writers characterised the relationship between the heavenly Christ and God the Father by identifying Jesus with the pre-existent personified Wisdom of Prov 8. The object of the thesis is to explore a parallel movement, which already takes place during the formation of the gospel traditions, and which ascribes functions of the divine Wisdom, most prominently her active participation in Israel’s history, to the earthly Jesus. Especially the Q-saying often called the “Lament over Jerusalem” (or Jerusalem Word) in Luke 13:34-35 and Matt 23:37-39, summarises Jesus’ earthly ministry in terms that remind of Wisdom’s function in the Jewish tradition. I demonstrate that Wisdom had come to be seen as an agent in Israel’s history in Second Temple Judaism, and each of the four elements of the Jerusalem Word, which describe Jesus’ mission (1. sending prophets and envoys; 2. gathering the children of Jerusalem; 3. representing God’s presence in the temple and withdrawing when he is rejected; and 4. returning with, or as, the eschatological Son of Man), presents an action, which had formerly been ascribed to personified Wisdom. One important feature of the divine Wisdom, which allows her to act in the above mentioned functions that impact on historical reality, is her relationship to God: Wisdom can be nearly identified with God, but takes on features of a separate agent when she becomes manifest in the immanence. Therefore, Wisdom is a representation of God in the historical world, and as Jesus takes on the same role, he appears as a new manifestation of this very same representative. I also demonstrate that the Jewish texts relate Wisdom to another representation of God, the Angel of the Lord, famously encountered as the pillar of cloud and fire on Israel’s wilderness wanderings, acting as a manifestation and servant of God at the same time. Wisdom is associated or identified with the pillar of cloud in Sir 24:4, 10 and Wis 10:17. Thus, the role of the previously known mediator, the Angel of the Lord, is transferred to the divine Wisdom, portraying Wisdom as a new appearance of this ‘older’ divine representative. Matt 23:37-39 par. Luke 13:34-35 continues the tradition of actualising the image of the divine mediator by presenting Jesus in an analogous way as the contemporary representative of God in the world like Wisdom or the Angel of the Lord.

This thesis explores the problematic nature of theodicy (theological explanations for suffering). It questions what kind of meaning-making might occur in place of theodicy in societies which are undergoing a change in attitude to religious belief and practise. In doing so, it looks to shed light on how the Church might respond to instances of mass suffering (referred to as 'ground-zero' events) and other traumatic experiences in the current social context. Drawing on a practical theological methodology, and employing ethnographic tools of investigation, this thesis includes data collected via interviews (thirty in total) and observation with the Sunday Assembly. This burgeoning global movement is not religiously affiliated, yet it draws on the structures and practises of the Christian Church to the extent that it has been referred to as an 'atheist church' (and, laterally, a 'secular congregation.') Data gathered at communities in London and Edinburgh provides a critical basis for theological reflection on the group's responses to suffering. The key finding of this thesis concerns the Sunday Assembly's adoption of a philosophy of celebration, which, in practise, can lead to the 'passing over' of suffering on both a global and individual scale. In response, this thesis concludes with a reflection on the Church's propensity to also avoid discussion of suffering, and suggests that churches resist this by constructing a 'culture of lament' in which suffering might be acknowledged and addressed. This practise is intended to prevent Christian communities from evading traumatic events, or else reverting to potentially harmful theodicies.

In addition, I will point out these elements and explain how and why they are considered Greek. Overall, this paper will contribute to the understanding of Greek composers today and hopefully will motivate scholars and performers to do for further research into Greek music.

Streszczenie:
The scope of this research is to spark conversation among members of receiving communities concerning their attitudes toward displaced populations by using Euripides' Trojan Women as a facilitator. By many outside the Classics profession, the study of antiquity is often perceived as a discipline disconnected from current issues; however, remembering and examining the past can greatly shape the present. Ancient Greek theater is perhaps the genre that best lends itself to be scrutinized today for social purposes. In fact, it promoted introspection among the body of Athenian citizens by highlighting inequalities and imbalances in power structures between opposing parties. This study suggests that tragedies can still fulfill the same function. In particular, this essay focuses on Trojan Women, with the intent to unearth group dynamics between the Greek aggressors and the Trojan slaves, and to apply its lessons to recent humanitarian emergencies. Philological work shows that the Greeks in the play attempt to dehumanize their captives through practices of legal violence, objectification, and silencing. Nevertheless, the women find sanctuary from human annihilation through their ability to speak and to be heard. Dominant classes today employ similar techniques to disempower incoming societies and to deprive them of their political voice. Thanks to tragedy's ability to create a distancing effect through mythological narratives, public readings of Trojan Women might enable members of hosting countries to engage more readily in discussions concerning the theme of displacement that address their own biases. Therefore, this thesis argues that the analysis and reception of Trojan Women can elucidate the worldwide crisis in welcoming those seeking shelter and help groups asked to receive displaced populations make more compassionate and informed decisions.

This thesis examines how Jews of the Ottoman Empire responded to newfound opportunities that emerged across the domains of the late Ottoman Empire in the nineteenth century due to the Ottoman bureaucratic reforms (Tanzimat). It challenges the discourses that argue that Jews engaged probing issues such as nationalism in a monolithic fashion. Rather, Sephardi and Arab Jews, based on socioeconomic status and geographic location in the Empire approached questions of affiliation with the Empire or attachment to new forms of nationalism based on divergent structures that informed their lives and personal political choices. This project explores the main avenues that Jews in the Ottoman world used to approach questions that animated the public discourse not just of Jews, but of peoples across the globe who struggled to find new avenues for belonging in shifting geopolitical terrains. For Jewish communities in the Ottoman world, four dominant avenues and attitudes emerged: traditionalists who desired to maintain the status quo; those who sought an Ottoman or Turkish Republican future; Sephardi Zionists who believed they were integral to Ottoman communal history; provincial nationalists who agitated for distinct regional identities. The thesis also briefly examines the Armenian millet’s socio-political situation during the nineteenth and twentieth century in order to show the ways in which the Jewish millet was both in tandem with broader nationalist discourses but were also less cohesively politically organized than other millets in the Empire.
