Streszczenie:
Eutrophication is a global environmental problem, which in Sweden is predominantly in the south of Sweden where there are large agricultural areas. Skellefteå is a small town on the northern coast which has eleven water bodies classified as “poor ecological status” of which Uttersjöträsket is one of them according to the water authorities. Uttersjöträsket has a requirement to achieve good ecological status by 2021. Uttersjöträsket’s agriculture land is from at least 1716 according to historical maps. To be able to restore a eutrophic lake the source of the phosphorus load must be identified. To determine the natural state for Uttersjöträsket the sediment record could be studied. For example, earlier studies have been made in Kassjön in Umeå were they conclude that the beginning of the agriculture area started in the 12th century, which means that Uttersjöträsket could have had agriculture land since before 1716. The municipality of Skellefteå made contact with residents in the area who formed a water group to work towards achieving the goal by 2021. This report will form the basis for the water group to take appropriate measures to reduce the bloom of cyanobacteria and to achieve good ecological status. The conclusions of this report are based on analysis of data and results from previous studies of eutrophic lakes. Many different methods must be done to have a long-lasting impact and to achieve good ecological status in Uttersjöträsket. The focus of the actions should be on the ditch between Yttersjön and Uttersjöträsket as the highest phosphorus load is in that catchment.

Hopkins, Aareka. "The potential for Charophyte re-establishment in large, shallow, eutrophic lakes with special reference to Lake Waikare, New Zealand". The University of Waikato, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10289/2419.

Streszczenie:
Lake Waikare is a large, shallow eutrophic lake devoid of submerged macrophytes. I investigated potential methods for re-establishing submerged macrophytes in the lake. Specifically, I subjected charophyte (Chara corallina) plantlets to two treatments of exposure in the lake (in areas exposed and sheltered from wind) to test for survival and growth under these conditions, and inside and outside fish exclosures to test for growth and survival in the presence of fish. While plantlets grew outside the exclosures in winter, their accumulated biomass over 21 days was less than protected plantlets. In winter, the accumulated biomass was lower outside than inside exclosures (by ~40%) at the sheltered site and was lower outside than inside exclosures (by 43%) at the exposed site. Overall, growth rates in winter were higher at the sheltered site (compared to the exposed site) by ~7%. In summer, charophyte accumulated biomass inside the exclosures increased by 85%, while at the sheltered site accumulated biomass increased by 58%. Outside the exclosures in summer the plantlets were completely removed at both sites. Overall, growth rates where higher at the exposed site than the sheltered site by 31%. Fish were responsible for the partial removal of plantlets in winter and total removal of plantlets in summer, and therefore affect the survival and growth of charophytes in Lake Waikare. The embayment at the sheltered site provides the best location in winter for re-establishment of charophytes from oospores because better growth rates were obtained there, and its sheltered location provides protection from severe wave action found at the exposed site. Oospores did not germinate after being submersed in the lake for 90 days due to heavy sedimentation. To induce an improvement in the present light climate, Alum was tested to determine its effectiveness and longevity for settling lake sediments to allow charophytes to establish and grow. Examining the settling rates of Lake Waikare sediments and water treated with Alum over a range of suspended sediment concentrations and time intervals, sediments settled faster with Alum than without for at least 15 days (at 200 g l^1 suspended sediment concentration) and it remained active to 60 days but at reduced effectiveness. At the other concentrations tested (100 g l^1 and 300 g l^1 suspended sediment concentration), Alum responses were insignificant. An improved light climate achieved by fish removal or Alum treatment will likely not be sufficient to permit the re-establishment of submerged macrophytes due to the turbid, algal-dominated state of the lake. The present nutrient and sediment levels, wave climate and fish influence must be mitigated so charophyte plantlets can be established.

Streszczenie:
The Lakes of the Four Seasons, a community in Lake and Porter Counties in northwestern Indiana, contains highly eutrophic lakes. A diagnostic feasibility study of the lakes was initiated in December 1981, and continued through November 1982. Morphometric, limnological and hydrologic characteristics of the lakes were defined in order to permit the development of nutrient and hydrologic budgets for the lakes. In addition to the development of these budgets, preliminary testing of a lake restoration technique, phosphorus precipitation, was performed. These studies and the resultant budgets provided necessary information for the formulation of feasible restoration methods for the lakes. The recommended restoration methods, if implemented, could enhance and maintain water quality conducive to recreational use and aesthetic enjoyment. The Lakes of the Four Seasons system has a mass water loading of 3.596 x 106 m3 Y-1and a hydraulic residence time of 0.71 y. Mass external phosphorus loading to the lakes is 537.34 kg –1 . Mass nitrogen loading to the system is 13,457 kg y -l.Big Bass Lake has a mass water loading of 2.316 x 106 m3 y-1 and a hydraulic residence time of 0.16 y. Mass external phosphorus loading to the lake is 356.76 kg y -l. Mass nitrogen loading to Big Bass Lake is 12,260 kg y -l.Lake Holiday/Lake on the Green has a mass water loading of 3.423 x 106 m3 y 1 and a hydraulic residence time of 0.65 y. Mass external phosphorus loading to the lakes is 330.52 kg y-1. Mass nitrogen loading to the Lake Holiday/Lake on the Green is 11,980 kg y1.Both loading and in-lake nitrogen:phosphorus ratios indicated phosphorus limitation in these lakes. The eutrophic condition of the lakes was also indicated by in-lake nutrient concentrations as well as excessive algal and macrophyte growth. Rapid 02 depletion, which occurs in water overlying the sediments even though the lakes are fairly well mixed, also testifies to the extreme productivity of the lakes.Restoration options for these lakes include short term cosmetic methods, longer term options for the disruption of internal phosphorus cycling, and abatement of phosphorus loading from the watershed. The cosmetic options involve the use of herbicides and algicides to give immediate relief from excessive primary productivity. Dredging and drawdown/sediment consolidation are aired at reducing internal phosphorus loading, while methods directed at the abatement of phosphorus loading from the watershed attack the cause of the lake system's problems. The longer term options necessitate further studies before implementation.

Streszczenie:
The charophytes comprise a group of green algae that is now recognised both for its evolutionary and ecological significance. Ecologically, the larger charophytes (charales) are important colonizers of the bottom sediments of lakes and slowly flowing rivers, where they can form dense monocultures or communities with a variety of submerged angiosperm species ('macrophytes'),but population changes in these plants are often difficult to predict High sediment shear strengths are associated with greater abundance of charophytes. Distribution of 00 spores through water movement is unlikely. Charophyte oospores will sink below the depth at which they are capable of emergence in sediments with very low shear strengths. Oospores will not germination in anoxic conditions, but oospores of Chara vulgaris will achieve germination in most other conditions. A method of showing viability in charophyte oospores, which eliminates the need for extensive germination trials is developed. Chara intermedia grows better at low light flux densities, but will not outcompete other macrophytes Re-growth from small fragments of charophyte stem is possible in sediments with low shear strength. These fragments respond to a range of planting methods, but this achievement is difficult to duplicate under field conditions. Charophyte growth rates are particularly sensitive to water temperature, and the process of gametangia formation depends on raised water temperatures. A model suggesting the charophyte population response to water temperatures, and length of growing season is presented. The actual response of charophyte populations to temperature fluctuations over a period of 18 years is examined. Antifouling paints contain substances that cause stress to charophytes. They also contain high concentrations of copper, enabling the use of sediment total copper content as an indicator of their past presence. Low biocide concentrations are shown to effect charophyte growth rates at typical spring temperatures, a time when competition with other macrophytes is particularly important.

Streszczenie:
The general goals of this study were to evaluate transplant methods for Lake Pontchartrain submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) restoration, and to compare survival and expansion of transplanted SAV among four sites. Two experiments were conducted from summer 2000 through spring 2001 at two north shore and two south shore sites in Lake Pontchartrain. Experiment 1 involved testing the effects of transplanting with matting, staples, exclosures, and interspecific interaction on survival and expansion of Ruppia maritima and Vallisneria americana transplants in Lake Pontchartrain. Experiment 2 involved testing the effects of transplanting with matting, staples, and plugs on Ruppia survival and expansion. After transplanting, areal coverage was monitored in fall 2000 and spring 2001. Unusually high salinities and high wave energy caused Vallisneria numbers to rapidly decrease after transplanting. Matting always had equal or greater Ruppia coverage than staples. Exclosure treatments had no effect on Ruppia coverage. No significant biological interaction was detected between species. Matting provided a stable substrate for Ruppia while staple and plug treatments succumbed to the high-energy environment of Lake Pontchartrain. High wave energy and eutrophication were responsible for the loss of all south shore transplants.

Morrison, Edward Howard James. "Ecological restoration of papyrus wetlands at Lake Naivasha, Kenya : social and ecological considerations". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/28183.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Papyrus swamps form ecological buffer zones at the land-water interface, protecting lake shallows from sedimentation and reducing the risk of eutrophication in open water. Many communities living near papyrus swamps, particularly in East Africa, derive socioeconomic benefits from these highly productive ecosystems. Loss of the buffering capacity of papyrus at Lake Naivasha, Kenya, explains much of the observed increase in the lake’s trophic state. Multiple authors have called for Naivasha’s wetlands to be restored; however, the social and ecological factors that would need to be considered before doing so have received insufficient attention. Case studies of recent restoration programmes at Lake Victoria illustrate the means by which degraded wetlands can be rehabilitated. Analysis of attitudes towards papyrus at Lake Naivasha reveals a general lack of awareness surrounding the benefits of local wetlands, forming a potential barrier to successful restoration there. An assessment of the lake’s riparian zone demonstrates that both anthropogenic and natural pressures present significant challenges for the survival of lake-fringing wetlands, highlighting changes that have occurred within the ecosystem over the last few decades. Potential means of addressing both the social and ecological limitations to papyrus restoration are offered, with explicit linkages to the benefits of doing so made clear. Floating islands are shown to be the most appropriate reference for ecological restoration at Lake Naivasha, which can be replicated through artificial technology. The establishment of a consumptive use value for harvested papyrus at Naivasha would help to raise stakeholders’ awareness of wetlands; a novel means of producing biomass briquettes was met with positive responses from local residents and may be used to encourage community participation in restoration. A vision for wise use of this internationally renowned Ramsar site is set out, with recommendations made as to how papyrus wetlands could be managed sustainably over the long term.

A pesquisa bibliom?trica foi conduzida com o banco de dados "Web of Science" atrav?s da fun??o de busca ?TS = ((cyanobacteri* or blue green algae or cyanoprokariote or cyanophyceae) and (mass accumulation or bloom or domina*))?, de 1969 a junho de 2016.
Artificial eutrophication has been considered a problem of major concern in aquatic ecosystems around the world. Since 1960, scientific advances have been made in order to develop techniques that mitigate the effects of eutrophication. Several physical, chemical and biological procedures can be used and combined to recover lakes from cyanobacterial blooms, such as the application of a flocculant combined with natural or modified clay. However, the efficacy of local dryland soils in mitigating blooms is unknown for Brazilian manmade lakes. In this paper, we present a bibliometric analysis of the evolution of publications about cyanobacterial blooms and identify records that directly aim to overcome the occurrence of these blooms. Also, we evaluate, through laboratory experiments, the effect of the combined use of flocculent polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and a local soil from the lake catchment (LS), as ballast, in controlling cyanobacterial bloom in a shallow lake of the semiarid region of Brazil. The bibliometric research was conducted with the ?Web of Science? database through the search function ?TS = ((cyanobacteri* or blue green algae or cyanoprokariote or cyanophyceae) and (mass accumulation or bloom or domina*))?, from 1969 to June 2016. We performed a keyword frequency analysis and quantified the number of records with a restoration approach. Besides, three sets of experiments were performed in three sampling occasions with different bloom compositions and biomass in Armando Ribeiro Gon?alves Reservoir. Our study revealed that studies about cyanobacterial blooms increased exponentially and their quantitative impact on the aquatic sciences increased significantly along the years (F = 97.52; p < 0.0001). The USA stands out as the most productive nation, followed by China and European countries. China has impressively increased its contribution to this area, surpassing the USA in the last five years. Studies about Microcystis and toxins, such as microcystins, are trends in research, due to their ubiquitousness and historical negative consequences. We also emphasize the need for more studies aiming at developing techniques to solve and/or mitigate the issue of blooms. In view of this, our experiments revealed that the use of PAC and LS had a remarkable effect on cyanobacterial biomass in the water column in all samplings, reducing up to 90% top chlorophyll-a concentration. The use of LS alone was inefficient to settle blue-green-algal biomass. In two samplings, the combination of flocculant and ballast exhibited the same efficacy as the use of solely PAC. Even so, the use of LS is important to ensure sedimentation. Combined with PAC, LS was as efficient a ballast to remove cyanobacteria as a commercially available modified clay (Phoslock?). Althugh LS in natura released considerable amounts of phosphorus and did not present P adsorption capacity, it managed to adsorb some dissolved phosphorus after organic matter was removed through muffling. This study shows that LS is a cheap, feasible and environment-friendly alternative to be used as a management action in reservoirs undergoing blooms in the semiarid region of Brazil.

Streszczenie:
Loktak Lake is an internationally important wetland in northeast India that provides valuable goods and services to local communities as well as supporting high biodiversity. Over the last three decades ecological modifications have occurred, most notably due to the construction and operation of the Ithai Barrage. The focus on maximising hydropower generation increased mean lake water levels and reduced their annual variability. This thesis synthesises hydrometeorological and related data for the lake and its catchment. Data are employed in coupled hydrological / hydraulic catchment models (MIKE SHE / MIKE 11) of three gauged sub-catchments, which are calibrated / validated using observed discharges. Results are used to estimate ungauged sub-catchment flows. Catchment model results are combined with meteorological data and current abstractions within a water balance model which successfully simulates observed lake water levels. A series of barrage operation options are developed using the water balance model which prioritise the requirements of major stakeholders (hydropower, agriculture, and the lake ecosystem). A final option is developed, which shows that it is possible to balance the demands of these stakeholders. The implications of climate change are assessed by forcing meteorological inputs to the catchment and water balance models based upon a number of climate scenarios. In the majority of these scenarios, river inflows increase resulting in higher lake water levels that could further exacerbate ecological degradation of the lake as well as enhancing flooding of lakeside communities. The elevated water levels may permit additional irrigation abstractions however existing infrastructure limits increases in hydropower generation. The sustainability of the barrage operation options in the face of climate change is assessed. Results suggest that climate change is likely to limit the ability of barrage management to satisfy hydropower and agricultural demands whilst at the same time establishing a more ecologically appropriate lake water level regime.

Streszczenie:
Abstract There are many methods for the restorating a eutrophicated lake. This study has concentrated on chemical treatment of the sediment and the restoration measurements. This study is divided into three parts: studies of the chemical restoration of study lakes, the optimization of the sediment chemical restoration method, and the evaluation of the method effectiveness of the lake restoration. According to the results, it is possible to adsorb phosphorus to the sediment and keep it adsorbed, but chemical treatment will not improve the long term phosphorus adsorption capacity of the sediments. Therefore, the internal phosphorus load from sediments is only temporarily decreased. Contrary to the claims of earlier studies, the chemical treatment should be executed with small doses successively over many years. In this case, the phosphorus from the hypolimnion and the interstitial water is engaged and stored in the sediment. The phosphorus will remain stored unless the acidity of the sediment changes so that the phosphorus-aluminum bond is broke. The most important factors in the sediment chemical restoration are the pH-reaction of the chemical and sediment-water mixture. Also, available phosphorus that can be engaged is important. In addition, the natural variety of the pH-value of the lake must be considered. A laboratory test was made that compared the suitability of five different chemicals for the restoration of lakes. The tested chemicals were chemicals that are commonly used in the production of drinking water and in waste water treatment. The most suitable chemical for lake restoration was Kemira’s CFH0818 which had the best ability to engage phosphorus and the best pH-reaction. The successfulness of the lake restoration can be determined from the phosphate in the interstitial water of the sediment as a primary source of internal phosphorus load. This diffusion calculation can be made in every restoration object before and after the restoration measures. Also, oxygen conditions, pH-value and the process environment of the breakdown of the organic material are determined as tools for the restoration measures. The use of the evaluation methods is mostly limited by the dynamic nature of the process environment over different seasons of the year. So for reliable restoration measurement one must know why, when and where the measurements are made
Näiden mittausten perusteella voidaan kunnostustoimien tuloksellisuutta arvioida varsin luotettavasti. Tulosten käyttöä rajoittavat lähinnä muuttuvat prosessiolosuhteet eri vuodenaikoina ja toistaiseksi riittävän vertailuaineiston puute. Järvikunnostuksen tuloksellisuuden arvioimiseksi on tiedettävä kohdekohtaisesti miksi, milloin ja mistä mitataan, jotta arvio on luotettava

The Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) is a wildlife management area with tallgrass prairie, an endangered ecosystem. Essential ecosystem processes, especially fire, are part of restoration. To support fire management efforts at LLELA and surrounding areas, this project evaluated and developed tools for fire restoration. The four primary prairie grasses respond favorably to burning. Fuel loads and fuel models vary by scale and survey method. One- and 10-hour fuel moisture can be predicted using a statistical model; 100- and 1,000-hour fuel moisture cannot. Historic weather data suggests that burning can occur when it is most effective. The production of ozone precursors produced by burning is comparable to those emitted every six minutes by regional automobiles.

Streszczenie:
Human activities such as urban settlement, farming, forestry and recreation, have caused deterioration of water quality in many freshwater lakes worldwide. Apart from anthropogenic impacts, it is also recognized that climate has a direct influence on lake water temperature, nutrient loads, phytoplankton abundance and chemistry. However, little is known about the potential effects of future climate change on lake water quality. Understanding the dynamics, abundance and availability of nutrient pools in lake bottom sediments is fundamentally important for predicting how, and over what time-scales, lake ecosystems will respond to future scenarios such as climate change, in-lake restoration or altered external nutrient loading. Through a sediment field study on 14 different lakes, and applications of complex lake ecosystem models to three New Zealand lakes, this study examined the spatial and temporal dynamics of sediment nutrient concentrations, and made considerations of the effects of restoration measures and future climate change on lake water quality. To gain insight into processes influencing the dynamics of horizontal and vertical gradients of sediment nutrient concentrations, intact sediment cores were collected from twelve lakes within the Bay of Plenty province, North Island of New Zealand. In addition, intact sediment cores were collected from shallow Lake Te Waihora (Ellesmere) in the Canterbury province, South Island of New Zealand and shallow Lake Taihu in the Jaingsu province, China. The observed vertical concentration profiles of total phosphorus (TP) in the sediments revealed that the shape of these profiles can be similar across gradients of widely differing trophic status. Empirical and mechanistic steady state profile models were derived to describe the vertical distribution of total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN) and TP concentrations in the sediments. These models revealed that density-driven burial and biodiffusive mixing, which in the models also includes effects of redox-driven gradients, are strongly correlated with vertical gradients of sediment TC, TN and TP content, whereas lake trophic status was not. Despite enhancing knowledge of the processes influencing vertical gradients of sediment nutrient concentrations, little is known about the rates at which sediment nutrient concentrations may change as a response to changes in external loading or climate. Studies into the composition of bottom sediments have been undertaken intermittently over the past three decades for the 12 lakes in the Bay of Plenty. These studies, together with the data collected in this study, were used to quantify temporal changes in sediment chemistry across the lakes. Comparison of the data collected in this study with results from a survey in 1995 showed that surficial sediment (0-2 cm) TP concentrations have increased in three of the 12 lakes, at rates ranging from 27.5 to 114.4 mg P kg-1 dry wt yr-1. TN concentrations in surficial sediments have increased in nine of the 12 lakes at rates ranging from 51.8 to 869.2 mg N kg-1 dry wt yr-1. A correlation analysis revealed that temporal changes in sediment TP and TN concentrations were not significantly linearly related (pgt0.05) to catchment area or temporal changes of different water column indices considered to reflect lake trophic state, including annual mean water column concentrations of TP, TN or chlorophyll a (Chl a). While vertical profiles of sediment nutrient concentrations can be used to provide information about historical changes of trophic status in lakes, little is known about horizontal variability of sediment nutrient concentrations, including possibly relationships with horizontal variations in water column variables. In the large, shallow and eutrophic Lake Taihu, China, there are distinct horizontal water column concentration gradients of nutrients and Chl a. Concentrations are generally high in the north, where some of the major polluted tributaries enter the lake, and relatively low in the south, where macrophytes generally are abundant. To test whether these water column concentration gradients are similarly reflected in spatial heterogeneity of nutrient concentrations within the bottom sediments of Lake Taihu, I examined correlations between concentrations of TP and TN in surficial sediments (0-2 cm) and TP, TN and Chl a concentrations in water column samples determined for 32 sites in 2005. Linear correlation analysis revealed that surficial sediment TP concentrations across the 32 stations were related significantly, though weakly, to annual mean water column concentrations of TP and TN as well as Chl a. Correlations of surficial sediment TN with water column variables were, however, not significant (p gt 0.05). To better understand the effects of future climate change on lakes of different trophic status, I applied the one-dimensional lake ecosystem model, DYRESM-CAEDYM, to oligo-mesotrophic Lake Okareka, eutrophic Lake Rotoehu and highly eutrophic Lake Te Waihora. All three models were calibrated based on a three-year period (July 2002 - June 2005) and validated on a separate two-year period (July 2005 - June 2007). The model simulations generally showed good agreement with observed data for temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and total nutrient and Chl a concentrations. To represent a possible future climate of 2100, temperature predictions were derived from the regional climate model, DARLAM, based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) A2 scenario, which suggests that air temperatures by the year 2100 will increase by an average of 2.5 'C and 2.7 'C for the Bay of Plenty and the Canterbury province, respectively, relative to the base scenario (years 2002-2007). Model simulations of the future climate scenarios indicate that climatic changes generally will lead to a degradation of lake water quality in all three lakes, especially during summer months, and further suggest that the effects on annual mean surface concentrations of TP, TN and Chl a will be equivalent to an increase in external TN and TP loading by 25-50%. Simulations for Lake Rotoehu, where diatoms and cyanophytes were represented in the conceptual model, further suggest that cyanophytes will be more abundant in the future, increasing by gt15% in annual mean biomass. Although the effects of climate change may be delayed or slightly mediated by the chemical resilience of the sediment nutrient pools, the effects of climate change on lake water quality in the New Zealand lakes will be of a magnitude that should be considered as management strategies are planned and implemented, thus increasing the probability of successful preservation or improvement in water quality in future decades.

Collings, Sandy Lyn. "Economic consequences of ecological change: restoration options for the Mfolozi floodplain and implications for Lake St. Lucia, South Africa". Thesis, Rhodes University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006950.

Streszczenie:
Lake St Lucia in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, experiences severe ecological stress during dry periods largely as a result of diminishing freshwater supplies and conditions of hypersalinity. Possible intervention involves diverting the Mfolozi River to the St Lucia Lake system. However, due to high sediment loading, water from the Mfolozi river requires considerable filtration before a link can be established. A suggested option considered in this study is to restore the existing sugarcane farmlands on the Mfolozi Floodplain (~20 800 ha) to previous wetland conditions to reinstate a sediment removal function amongst other benefits. Proposed restoration will have a direct impact on the industries currently supported by the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the Mfolozi Floodplain (tourism, sugar, conservation). to understand a measure of such impacts, ecosystem services for both Lake St Lucia and the Mfolozi Floodplain were analysed (flood alleviation, water provision, water purification, sediment regulation, tourism, fisheries, vegetation for harvest, existence, cultural and research). Annual economic values for each ecosystem service were determined by means of valuation methods that included benefit transfer and replacement cost. Results showed a current annual minimum value of the Mfolozi Floodplain and Lake St Lucia as greater than R21 million and R1.1 billion respectively. Partial restoration of the floodplain (~6 000 ha) is expected to increase the sum of all ecosystem services values by approximately 26% for the Mfolozi Floodplain and by 23% for the St Lucia System. Full restoration (~20 800 ha) increases the total ecosystem services value by 88% and 50% for the Mfolozi Floodplain and St Lucia System respectively. Results showed that economic values for existence, fisheries, tourism and water provision increase by the greatest percentage for the St Lucia System under both restoration scenarios. Partial and full restoration of the floodplain will result in the greatest increases in economic value for the services existence, tourism, fisheries and the harvesting of vegetation on the Mfolozi Floodplain.

Zaloumis, Nicholas Paul. "How successful is grassland restoration after removal of pine plantations on the eastern shores of Lake St Lucia?" Bachelor's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26044.

Streszczenie:
The coastal grasslands that occur along the Eastern Shores of Lake St. Lucia are rich in plant species, including endemics. These grasslands in North KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, are remnants of a severely threatened vegetation type. Large portions of the Eastern Shores have been utilized for commercial pine plantations over the last 50 years; however these have been removed over the last 17 years. It is therefore important that efforts to restore grasslands that have been previously afforested stands of pines are successful. These grassland systems are fire driven and therefore many plants have adapted to these conditions by having massive storage organs below the ground. Using several response variables I was able to assess the effects of plantations on alpha- and beta-diversity and functional traits of forb and other grassland species and attempted to determine whether these disturbed grassland were returning to their original state. A high level of community heterogeneity was found at both scales for natural vegetation, while more homogenous, species low patterns were seen in post-plantation sites. Most notable was the large number of missing resprouting species in pine sites and that, in contrast to forest rehabilitation studies, no evidence for succession was found. The implication of this is massive as grassland rehabilitation may be a lot harder than was previously thought. It is likely that the fire adapted forb species are bad colonizers and have struggled to return to disturbed sites. These grasslands are therefore susceptible to activities that remove or eliminate the considerable amount of below ground biomass from the soil, and these sorts of disturbances should be avoided. Active rehabilitation methods will be required if any progress is going to be made and until such methods are effective considerable effort should be made in conserving the remaining grasslands that we have left and promoting its pharmaceutical, horticultural and societal value.

Streszczenie:
Phragmites australis (hereafter Phragmites) often forms dense monocultures, which displace native plant communities and alter ecosystem functions and services. Managers tasked with controlling this plant need science-backed guidance on how to control Phragmites and restore native plant communities. This study took a large-scale approach - to better match the scale of actual restoration efforts - to compare two herbicides (glyphosate vs. imazapyr) and application timings (summer vs. fall). Five treatments were applied to 1.2 ha plots for three consecutive years: 1) summer glyphosate; 2) summer imazapyr; 3) fall glyphosate; 4) fall imazapyr; and 5) untreated control. Dead Phragmites following herbicide treatments was mowed in the first two years. Efficacy of treatments and the response of native plant communities were monitored for three years. We report that fall herbicide applications were superior to summer applications. No difference was found between the two herbicides in their ability to reduce Phragmites cover. Plant communities switched from emergent to open water communities and were limited by Phragmites litter and water depth. Although, some plant communities showed a slow trajectory towards one of the reference sites, cover of important native emergent plants did not increase until year three and remained below 10%. These results suggest that fall is the best time to apply herbicides for effective large-scale control of Phragmites. Active restoration (e.g. seeding) may be needed to gain back important native plant communities. Methods to reduce Phragmites litter after herbicide applications should be considered.

Streszczenie:
Eutrophication has proven to be a fundamental ecological problem for lakes and other bodies of water all around the world. The process of eutrophication can be defined as a lake containing increasing concentrations of nutrients from external and/or internal input over time. The increase of nutrients in the lake has several consequences for the lake ecosystem, such as the increase in algal blooms (sometimes containing toxic and harmful cyanobacteria) and the decrease of macrophytes. One nutrient that plays a key role in the eutrophication process is phosphorus. To restore eutrophic waters, the external and internal input of phosphorus needs to be reduced. External input can be decreased by reducing the run-off from industrial areas or agriculture. Internal input can be reduced by disrupting the in-lake phosphorus loading processes, which are connected heavily to the lake sediment. The internal phosphorus loading processes can be caused by several different processes. One is the mineralization of organic biomass on the sediment which releases phosphorus into the water, another is the release of previously iron-bound phosphorus from the sediment. Different treatments can be implemented in a lake system to disrupt these internal processes of phosphorus loading and consequently restore the water quality of the lake. Such treatments also influence the biota of the lake and the ecosystem services, because of their effect on water quality. Biomanipulation treatments and aluminum treatments were implemented in lake Växjösjön in Sweden to restore the lake to a more natural and balanced state. Both treatments were effective in reducing the eutrophic conditions of the lake, improving water quality, biota, and the ecosystem services. Local human populations benefit from these improvements, for example by receiving increased revenue from lake recreation. More research is however needed to discern the long-term effects of the treatments in the Växjö municipality, thereby aiding local government and policy makers in their future decisions regarding restoration.

Although hydromechanical lake remediation projects have been carried out over several decades, there still is a lack of evidence about the changes in environmental status after such projects, while scientific literature regarding redistribution of metals and metalloids caused by hydromechanical bottom sediment removal is especially scarce both in Lithuania and in other countries. Research of the dissertation consisted not only of extensive geochemical field work and laboratory analysis, but also methods of mathematical statistics and spatial interpolation. Results of the research and their analysis allowed to conclude that hydromechanical lake remediation results in changes of the contents of metals and metalloids of interest and their spatial redistribution in lake bottom sediments, which are specific to each metal and metalloid, thus cumulative indicators should be used to assess overall changes in sediment quality of remediated lakes. Calculation and statistical analysis of on of such indicators - total sediment contamination index (Zd) and surface interpolation of its values allowed to evaluate statistical significance of changes in contamination degree of the newly formed surface sediment layer and to assess cumulative spatial redistribution of metals and metalloids caused by hydromechanical lake remediation. Data provided in the dissertation is especially significant in preparation and design of future sediment removal projects and in determining their feasibility.

Streszczenie:
A primary goal of ecological restoration is to establish desirable plant species. This goal is particularly important following the removal of invasive plants. Understanding biological traits of plant species important to revegetation is crucial to plant establishment. In the globally important Great Salt Lake (GSL) wetlands, native habitat-forming bulrushes Bolboschoenus maritimus, Schoenoplectus acutus, and S. americanus are frequently displaced by the invasive grass Phragmites australis. Successful revegetation of bulrushes relies on improving our understanding of seed dormancy break, seed germination requirements, and the environmental factors affecting rhizome emergence and growth. We used a series of germination chamber and greenhouse experiments to examine effective seed dormancy break treatments and germination conditions for multiple collection sites of bulrushes B. maritimus, S. acutus, and S. americanus. We also performed a greenhouse experiment to investigate how water depth, nutrient, and salinity levels affect B. maritimus and S. acutus emergence and growth from rhizomes. Cold, moist stratification and bleach scarification were effective dormancy break treatments for all species, though magnitude of effect varied by species and source site. Soaking the seeds after application of dormancy break treatments improved germination for all species. Rhizome emergence of S. acutus was negatively affected by high water depth, likely due to oxygen limitation. Bolboschoenus maritimus was salinity tolerant relative to S. acutus. GSL wetland managers can use these findings to improve revegetation projects via seeding and planting.

Lake Monger (3204'S 115°20'E) was sampled intensively (18 occasions) between October 1988 and October 1989. Ordination and classification of the water chemistry, plankton and macroinvertebrates revealed three seasonal groups, spring/summer, summer/autumn and winter. In terms of the water chemistry these groups corresponded to periods of hypertrophy, eutrophy and mesotrophy respectively. The lake was found to be shallow (1-1.5 m deep) and polymictic. Internal release from the sediments was believed to be responsible for the high levels of P (> 700 jig L1) recorded during summer. In summer, the limiting nutrient for algal growth appeared to be N. Two species alternated in dominance of the zooplankton, the cladoceran Daphnia carinata King in winter and the copepod Mesocyclops sp in summer groups. These species accounted for >80% of the abundance and biomass of the zooplankton when they were dominant. Changes in the edibility of summer algal populations, rather than the effects of zooplanktivorous fish (Gambusia holbrooki (Girard)), invertebrate predators (e.g. hemipterans) or temperature was believed responsible for the summer declines in D. carinata. 70 macroinvertebrate taxa were recorded, substantially higher than found in other studies at the lake. Mean species richness was highest from areas of emergent reeds. Compilation of available data revealed a decline in water quality in the lake since European settlement, resulting from nutrient enrichment, introductions of exotic biota, removal of native vegetation, physical modification (landfill and dredging) and changes in hydrology (artificial maintenance of water levels). The study year (1988/89) appeared to be similar to other years in the late 1980's. Changes in fertilizer usage around the lake at the start of the 1990's appeared to have been responsible for subsequent significant improvements in the water quality. Twelve in-lake enclosures (1.5 m3) were used to assess the influence of predation by G. holbrooki, N limitation and gilvin (brown colour), on zooplankton and water chemistry. Increased levels of primary productivity were recorded in untreated control enclosures. Only low levels of gilvin were produced and these resulted in a slight increase in chlorophyll a rather than the anticipated decrease. Gambusia holbrooki was not found to be responsible for any changes in the zooplankton structure. Variability between replicate enclosures and P limitation in the lake meant that N limitation could not be established. The presence of large numbers of D. carinata was found to significantly improve water quality through grazing and removal of seston. There appeared to be a nutrient threshold of 150 fig T1 of P in the water column, above which algal composition or size was inedible for D. carinata. Biomanipulation, involving fish manipulations, appeared unlikely to be successful in improving water quality as the link between fish predation and summer declines in D. carinata appeared to be tenuous. Reductions in fertilizers used on lawns around the lake appeared to have had a significant effect on improving the water quality of the lake.

Lake restoration and management strategies focus on reducing the negative impacts of enriched or polluted inflows. These strategies become of paramount importance when lakes are used for recreational and/or drinking water purposes. Long term control of eutrophication and turbidity problems associated with large inflow loads is usually oriented to catchment management. Although it has been suggested that this is the correct long term approach, public concerns usually require a short term solution. In addition, due to political and economic costs related to changes in catchment management, in-lake restoration technologies have been emerging as a viable pretreatment option, complementary to water treatment plants, both reducing the operational costs of the water treatment plant and ameliorating the water residing in the lakes. This research investigates the effects of two in-lake technologies on the dynamics of inflowing rivers, where basin shape plays a significant role. The three lakes in this study suffer from eutrophication combined with a distinctive water quality problem: from turbidity in Silvan Reservoir (Australia), to heavy metal loads in Coeur d'Alene Lake (USA) and industrial wastes in Lake Como (Italy). Firstly, the influence of basin morphology, wind speed, and wind direction on the fate and transport of two rivers flowing into the L-shaped Coeur d'Alene Lake was examined, and it was shown that transport and mixing patterns in a lake can be greatly influenced by the shape of the lake, leading to important consequences for the plankton ecology in the lake. Secondly, in Silvan Reservoir we investigated the potential to modify the basin shape using vertical barriers, increasing the retention time and hence the barrier capacity to microbial pollution. A final in-lake technology was tested for Lake Como, using a downward pointing impeller to remove polluted water from the coastal margin. Lessons from these three examples indicate that there is significant potential for in-lake remediation at relatively low cost, over relatively short timescales.

Invasive plants can outcompete native plants, replacing diverse plant communities with monocultures, which can negatively impact the whole ecosystem. One invasive plant, Phragmites australis, has invaded wetlands across North America. In Utah’s Great Salt Lake, it has greatly reduced the area of native plants that are important habitat for migratory birds. Here we describe experiments that assess multiple treatments for Phragmites removal and evaluate the return of native plants after Phragmites management. The treatments were applied to Phragmites patches at two scales (small 1/4-acre plots and large 3-acre plots) and across multiple sites to evaluate how patch size and environmental differences can influence the plants that return after Phragmites removal. The treatments (applied over 3 years and monitored two more) compared two different herbicides (glyphosate and imazapyr) and different herbicide and mowing timings. The treatments evaluated in the large patch study were 1.) untreated control 2.) fall glyphosate, winter mow, 3.) summer imazapyr, winter mow, 4.) summer glyphosate, winter mow. The treatments evaluated in the small patch study included treatments 1-4 above plus 5.) summer mow, fall glyphosate, 6.) summer mow, then black plastic solarization. In the small patches, we also monitored the seeds in the soil to assess how Phragmites management treatments can change the densities of Phragmites and native seeds. Fall glyphosate treatments were superior for Phragmites cover reduction. After the initial treatment, summer herbicide and mow treatments reduced Phragmites seed production, while fall glyphosate did not. Phragmites seeds were plentiful in the soil but were reduced following three years of all herbicide treatments. Native plant recovery following Phragmites management was extremely variable across sites. Sites with high soil moisture had better Phragmites removal and more native plants. But when flooding was deep, native plants were rare. Native seed density in the soil did not change due to Phragmites management, but soil seed densities were different across sites, which influenced native plant recruitment. Phragmites was removed more effectively and native plants returned in greater numbers in small patches compared with large. This was because small patches were typically near established native plant communities, which likely provided more native plant seeds and had hydrology that was less disturbed by human activity. In sites where native plants do not return after Phragmites management, practitioners may need to try revegetation with native plant seeds to restore important native plant communities.

The study was conducted in the lake of the Mariano Procópio Museum, located in Juiz de Fora - MG and divided into four phases. The first two phases comprised a systemic analysis of the lake. The first one sought to know the dynamics of the phytoplankton community and to understand the causes of the cyanobacteria dominance in this system. In the second one, the main contributions of phosphorus to the system and the general balance of P were evaluated. In the third phase, laboratory experiments were carried out to evaluate the efficacy of different coagulants and ballasts for the removal of cyanobacteria. Last, in the fourth phase experiments were carried out in mesocosmos in the lake to test the control of eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms. The systemic analysis showed the dominance of different species of cyanobacteria and that the high concentrations of nutrients present in the system come mainly from external contribution. The combined use of coagulants and ballasts was efficient for the removal of cyanobacteria biomass, but it is dependent on the species pool. In the experiments with mesocosms, a strong reductions of chloropyll a (Chl a) 85% and total phosphorus (TP) 78% (p < 0.001) were observed in all treatments, however these reductions were not lasting. To mitigate the cyanobacterial blooms of this system, it will be necessary to control the external sources of nutrients and also an adjustment in the coagulant-ballast technique to keep Chl a l and TP in reduced concentrations for longer time.

The aim of this Thesis was to evaluate the role of the submerged macrophytes with respect to water quality and, interactions with phytoplankton and nutrient cycling in the large shallow subtropical Lake Mangueira, southern Brazil. To achieve these goals, this work counts with approaches in situ, in laboratory and aplication of ecological modelling to verifify the influence of the submerged vegetation over the dynamics of the ecosystem, whose water is intensively explored to irrigate rice crops around its surrounding area. Over the 200km of the lake littoral perimeter, several submerged macrophyte beds are established. The analysis of water quality and phytoplankton structure along a macrophyte-pelagic gradient revealed lower concentration of orto-phosphate (PO4) and chlorophyll-a (Chlo-a) in the vegetated area. At the pelagic zone, the higher Chlo-a values were corroborated by the higher biomass of phytoplankton, which was mostly composed by cyanobacteria species. Such evidences suggest the antagonistic relantionship between macrophytes and phytoplankton as nutrient competition and allelopathy. Experiments of coexistance, in microcosms, with 4 native submerged macrophytes and a toxic strain of the cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa proved the occurrence of these mechanisms. The experiments included different levels of light intensity and orto-phosphate concentration (PO4) in the medium aiming to identify thresholds in which allelopathy is likely to occur. The macrophytes Cabomba caroliniana and Myriophyllum spicatum showed allelopathic potential while the species Ceratophyllum demersum and Egeria densa showed a high capacity for PO4 absorption (±0.35 mg.g-1d-1), being able to reduce this nutrient to lower levels than 0.05 mg.L-1. Another experimental approach was carried out to parameterize the leaching of nutrients and carbon from 5 macrophytes under decaying process. Moreover, ecological modelling was utilized to simulate the growth of submerged macrophytes in subtropical and temperate lakes. This was done aiming to evaluate the possibility of resilience enhancement of the clear water state in lakes of low latitude because the plants can grow continuously, in contrast with temperate lakes, where they die seasonally due to rigorous winter. In addition, simulation of scenarios considering the collapse of the vegetation in Lake Mangueira because of water uptake for rice crops were carried out in oder to provide elements for the ecosystem management. Through this approach, it was possible to forecast possible eutrophication thresholds for phytoplankton blomming. In conclusion, the results proved the the postive feed-back mechanisms exerted by the submerged macrophytes on the water quality and the importance of their ecological functions to the trophic state of Lake Mangueira. In addition, such information serve as theoretical and practical basis for the management, restoration and conservation of subtropical and tropical shallow lakes.

Streszczenie:
Lewisville Lake Environmental Learning Area (LLELA) is an 809-hectare property in Denton County, TX. A study of the vegetation community identified 466 species in 104 families, with 25% of the species from only two families, Asteraceae and Poaceae. The property demonstrates the characteristics of an early successional community, dominated by weedy species. Prairie communities are dominated by Johnson grass and ragweed, with climax tall grass prairie communities only in areas that have been planted with native grass seed. Forest communities are similarly in an early successional stage, dominated by the hackberry-elm-ash alliance, with small remnants of native Cross Timbers found in isolated patches. Species richness and diversity were highest in the forests and lowest in the wetlands; evenness, though not different across ecosystems, demonstrated a strong seasonal component. The species list was compared with previously reported lists for Denton County, and 256 species identified had not been previously reported for the county. A wetland restoration study was conducted to determine if there was a difference in survival and growth between potted transplants with intact root systems and bare-root transplants. Two different mesh sizes were used for protection, and the success of the different caging was evaluated. Of eight species, only four survived through the second growing season. There was no significant difference in the success of the propagule types for Sagittaria latifolia. The treatments planted with intact root systems showed significantly higher growth and reproduction than the bare-root treatments for Eleocharis quadrangulata, Heteranthera dubia, and Vallisneria americana. There was no survival recorded in the coarse mesh cages, likely due to the presence of crayfish that are able to get through the coarser mesh and feed on the transplants.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the politics, plots and strategies of the militant presbyterian radicals of the United Societies, or later Covenanters, in their confrontation with the Restoration regime of Charles II and James VII in Scotland, and with the presbyterian movement between 1679 and 1688. Chapter one analyses the correlation between the Societies’ lay network and the pattern of militant presbyterian dissent. It outlines their core platform defined by their declarations and strict adherence to the Covenants. It discusses the formation of the United Societies out of the fragmentation of the presbyterian movement from the Bothwell debates to the creation of a coherent Cameronian platform and militant network in 1681. Chapter two analyses the Societies’ schisms, persecution and martyrdoms between 1682 and 1684 and argues that the origins of their apocalyptic war against their persecutors lay in their political isolation and persecution from both the regime and their former moderate brethren. Chapter three looks at the Societies’ embassies to England and Friesland which redefined their relationships with other presbyterians factions. It examines their role in the Rye House Plots with English Whigs and argues that they were a turning point which isolated them from the British radical underground. It also explores their contacts with the Nadere Reformatorie in the United Provinces which led to the ordination of James Renwick who hardened the Societies’ platform, and how the handling of the embassy led to the collapse of their European network. Chapter four examines the targeted persecution of the Societies in the Killing Times and the Societies’ role in the Argyll Rising of 1685 that led to further schisms over their separation from the moderate presbyterian ministry which undermined Renwick’s leadership. Chapter five traces the revival in the Societies’ fortunes to 1688. It examines the internal struggles over the Societies’ platform and the broadening of their ministerial cadre to include Alexander Shields and others; their relations with Irish presbyterian militants; their confrontation with moderate presbyterians caused by James VII’s toleration scheme; the context and impact of Renwick’s martyrdom and the reunification of the militant factions. Chapter six surveys the Societies’ world view and their attempts to construct a Calvinist international through their attitudes towards other Calvinists in the Friesland, Bremen and Switzerland, Lutheran Prussia and Sweden, Catholic France under Louis XIV and the Holy Roman Empire, and the Muslim Turks. It also compares their views of the Huguenots, Waldenses of Piedmont and Kurucs of Hungary, and the experiences of those banished to Barbados and the North American Colonies. It concludes that the Societies played a more significant and distinct role in the conflict between the presbyterian movement and the Stuart monarchy than previously thought; that their struggle and militancy were shaped by different political contexts, as demonstrated in their response to the Revolution in Scotland of 1688 to 1689, rather than simply religious conviction; and that the legacy of their martyrs, quickly subsumed into presbyterian tradition, became a justification for the Revolution settlement and a source of contention between radical and reactionary traditions.
