Streszczenie:
The extreme value theory (EVT) has been used to model and measure the distribution of extreme minima of Byco Petroleum in the Pakistan stock market over the period from 2005 to 2012. This paper covers the investigation of distributions that are mostly used in finance including the generalized extreme value (GEV), generalized logistics (GL), and generalized Pareto (GPA) distribution. L-moment ratio diagram is being used to find the appropriate distributions among the distributions. L-moment diagram depicts that GEV and GL distributions are suitable to represent the extremes of Byco Petroleum Pakistan Limited. Thereafter, the probability weighted moment (PWM) method has been used in order to estimate the parameters of probability distributions. Furthermore, Anderson–Darling (AD) goodness-of-fit test is employed to test the goodness of fit among GEV and GL distributions, and it is clear from the results that the GL distribution is more reliable and applicable for extreme minima of Byco Petroleum Company in the Pakistan stock exchange market. EVT and traditional methods are used for value-at-risk (VaR) analysis. The analysis indicates that EVT methods are more suitable for risk measurement in comparison with traditional methods.

"Population genetics and zoogeography of Australian freshwater golden perch, Macquaria ambigua (Richardson 1845) (Teleostei: Percichthyidae), and electrophoretic identification of a new species from the Lake Eyre basin". Streszczenie:
Populations of golden perch (Macquaria ambigua) were sampled from both sides of the Great Dividing Range (GDR): from the Murray-Darling drainage basin (Murray R., L. Keepit and Condamine R.), the L. Eyre internal drainage basin (Barcoo R. and Diamantina R.), and the internal drainage basin of the Bulloo R.-all to the west of the GDR-and from the Fitzroy drainage basin (Dawson R. and Nogoa R.) east of the GDR. Starch-gel and polyacrylamide electrophoresis of 12 enzyme systems plus two general muscle proteins was used to estimate the genetic variation within and between populations. Of the 18 presumed genetic loci examined, nine were either polymorphic at the P0.99 criterion level or exhibited fixed allelic differences between some of the populations. Within the Murray-Darling drainage basin, there was little indication of heterogeneity. Contingency Χ2 analyses of allelic distributions among drainage basins indicated significant levels of heterogeneity at six variable loci. The isolated L. Eyre population exhibited diagnostic alleles at four loci when compared with the Murray- Darling and Fitzroy populations. The genetic distance of the L. Eyre population (Nei's D=0.23) from these two populations indicates that the L. Eyre golden perch is most probably a previously unrecognized allopatric species. The level of divergence (0 = 0.06) between Fitzroy and Murray-Darling golden perch indicates differentiation at the subspecies level, with no fixed differences observed between these two populations. Finally, golden perch from the Bulloo R. represent either (i) an intermediate evolutionary unit between the presumed ancestral L. Eyre population and the derived Murray-Darling and Fitzroy populations or (ii) a complex hybrid between these populations. Average gene-flow statistics, FST = 0.760 and Nem=0.08, suggest that the populations in each of the four basins can be regarded as separate gene pools that have been isolated for different, and considerable, periods of time.

Streszczenie:
Salinisation in the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia, may affect aquatic flora and fauna, including the common carp, an alien species that has become the most common fish in the river system. This study describes the responses of juvenile carp (31–108 mm total length) to salinity levels that prevail in some wetlands of the lower reaches of the River Murray. Carp are moderately tolerant of salinity (direct transfer LC50: 11 715 mg L–1), particularly after slow acclimation (LC50: 13 070 mg L–1), but sub-lethal effects are evident at lower salinities. These include effects on osmoregulation (>7500 mg L–1), behaviour (7500–12 500 mg L–1) and sperm motility in mature fish (150–300 mm) (8330 mg L–1). Salinities in some Murray–Darling Basin wetlands already approach half seawater (17 500 mg L–1) and carp populations in these important nursery areas could be impacted through sub-lethal effects on adults and lethal effects on juveniles, eggs and sperm.

Although, our main focus is on estimation from frequentist point of view, yet, various mathematical and statistical properties of the Dagum distribution (such as quantiles, moments, moment generating function, hazard rate, mean residual lifetime, mean past lifetime, mean deviation about mean and median, various entropies, Bonferroni and Lorenz curves and order statistics) are derived. We briefly describe different frequentist approaches, namely, maximum likelihood estimators, moments estimators, L-moment estimators, percentile based estimators, least squares estimators, maximum product of spacings estimators, minimum distances estimators, Cram\'{e}r-von-Mises estimators, Anderson-Darling and right-tail Anderson-Darling estimators and compare them using extensive numerical simulations. Monte Carlo simulations are performed to compare the performances of the proposed methods of estimation for both small and large samples. Streszczenie:
Objective: The aim of this paper is to show the application of the Non-Parametric Sign Test in problems involving the testing of central tendency values. Theoretical framework: Non-parametric methods are widely used in the study of populations that are taken in rank order (such as a movie that receives one to four star ratings). The use of non-parametric methods may also be necessary when the data has a ranking but no clear numerical interpretation, such as when accessing preferences. In terms of scale, non-parametric methods result in data that is "in order" (Thatcher et al., 2005) Method: Data was taken from a company in the South of Rio de Janeiro and a case study was carried out using the Non-Parametric Sign Test. Final Considerations: Initially it proved unfeasible to use a Parametric Test because the Anderson-Darling Test showed that the Assumption of Normality was not confirmed and finally the Non-Parametric Sign Test showed that the hypothetical Median really is the correct measure of Central Tendency. Implications of the research: The use of Non-Parametric Tests is widespread in scientific literature and has proven to be highly effective in dealing with data where the assumptions of Normality are not confirmed. Originality/value: Despite being well-known statistical tools, Non-Parametric Tests are widely used and can bring innovations to their application, as in the case of the company in question.

Streszczenie:
We compare the usefulness of nonparametric and parametric methods of diameter distribution modeling. The nonparametric method was represented by the new tool—kernel estimator of cumulative distribution function with bandwidths of 1 cm (KE1), 2 cm (KE2), and bandwidth obtained automatically (KEA). Johnson SB (JSB) function was used for the parametric method. The data set consisted of 7867 measurements made at breast height in 360 sample plots established in 36 managed black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.) stands located in southeastern Poland. The model performance was assessed using leave-one-plot-out cross-validation and goodness-of-fit measures: mean error, root mean squared error, Kolmogorov–Smirnov, and Anderson–Darling statistics. The model based on KE1 revealed a good fit to diameters forming training sets. A poor fit was observed for KEA. Frequency of diameters forming test sets were properly fitted by KEA and poorly by KE1. KEA develops more general models that can be used for the approximation of independent data sets. Models based on KE1 adequately fit local irregularities in diameter frequency, which may be considered as an advantageous in some situations and as a drawback in other conditions due to the risk of model overfitting. The application of the JSB function to training sets resulted in the worst fit among the developed models. The performance of the parametric method used to test sets varied depending on the criterion used. Similar to KEA, the JSB function gives more general models that emphasize the rough shape of the approximated distribution. Site type and stand age do not affect the fit of nonparametric models. The JSB function show slightly better fit in older stands. The differences between the average values of Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS), Anderson–Darling (AD), and root mean squared error (RMSE) statistics calculated for models developed with test sets were statistically nonsignificant, which indicates the similar usefulness of the investigated methods for modeling diameter distribution.

This study evaluated the performance of probability distribution in various financial periods by investigating the effect of economic cycle on extreme stock return activity. Malaysian stock price KLCI data from 1994–2008 were split into three economy periods correspond to the growth, financial crisis, and the recovery. Four prevalent distributions specifically generalized lambda distribution (GLD), generalized extreme value (GEV), generalized logistic (GLO), and generalized pareto (GPA) were employed to model weekly and monthly maximum and minimum Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) share returns. The L-moment approach was used to estimate the parameter while k-sample Anderson darling (k-ad) test was applied to measure the goodness of fit estimation. In conclusion, GLD is the most appropriate distribution representing a weekly maximum minimum return for overall three economic scenarios in Malaysia.

The dependence of WACC, discount rate, WACC–g (here g is growth rate), company capitalization, V, the equity cost, ke, on leverage L at various values of g, on debt cost, kd, and on age of the company, n, is studied. It is shown, that WACC, is no longer a discount rate. This role passes to WACC–g, which decreases with g, while the company's value increases with g. The tilt of curve k(L) growths with g. It is found that at the growth rate g < g* the tilt of the curve ke(L) is negative. This changes significantly the company's dividend policy principles. WACC(L) as well as the discount rate, WACC–g, decrease with the increase of debt cost kd. V (L) at all values of kd increases with leverage L, as well V(L) increases with kd. This means that tax shield advantages the decrease of the cost of raising capital. Examining the main financial parameters of the company at the positive (g=0.2) and negative (g=–0.2) growth rates, we found a huge difference in their behavior. This allows you to explore companies with growing profits and companies with decreasing profits, as well investigate the financial state of the companies whose profits rise and fall in different periods.

Streszczenie:
Non-native common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) are the most abundant large-bodied fish in the Murray–Darling Basin. The abundance of common carp larvae and young-of-the-year appears to increase after flooding, although the relative contribution of floodplain habitats compared to riverine areas remains unresolved. Larval nets were used monthly from September 2000 to January 2001 to identify common carp spawning and recruitment areas in the regulated Murray River and floodplain around the Barmah–Millewa forest. Five non-native and five native fish species comprising 136 111 individuals were collected, with common carp constituting 88% of the overall catch. Less than 1% of common carp, however, originated from the Murray River upstream of the Barmah–Millewa floodplain. Consequently, this floodplain appears to be a major source of common carp recruitment in the mid-Murray area. Conversely, eggs from large-bodied native fish were only present in the Murray River and not the Barmah floodplain. There are opportunities for common carp control in this area, to potentially reduce populations in a wider river reach. Implementation of common carp control measures in the Barmah–Millewa floodplain should be further investigated, particularly with regard to seasonal irrigation flows, obligatory migration routes and in the timing of future large-scale environmental water allocations.

The salt tolerance of 20 lines of perennial grasses, including both native Australian and introduced species, was evaluated in 3 separate experiments over 0-180 mol Na Cl/m3 in the greenhouse, with the aim of identifying material that may be grown productively in saline areas in Australia, particularly the Murray- Darling Basin. Lolium perenne cv. Victorian, a species that is recognised as having a moderate level of salt tolerance, was included in all experiments as a reference species. In relative terms (as defined by the rate of the decline in dry matter production under saline conditions), only 5 species or cultivars (Psathyrostachys juncea cvv. Mankota, Tetracan and Vinall, Pascopyrum smithii cv. Walsh and Thinopyrum elongatum cv. Tyrell) were more salt tolerant than L. perenne cv. Victorian. However, several species including the native species Enteropogon acicularis and Themeda triandra, and the introduced species Eragrostis curvula cv. Consol and Thinopyrum elongatum, produced more dry matter than L. perenne over NaCl concentrations ranging from 0 to 180 mol/m3. The salt tolerance of Danthonia richardsonii was very similar to that of L. perenne. It was concluded that Psathyrostachys juncea, Pascopyrum smithii, Enteropogon acicularis and D. richardsonii, may offer potential as salt-tolerant germplasm, however, further field studies are recommended in order to fully assess the response of this material to saline soil conditions.

Though I admired the book, it did not prepare me for meeting the man. In 1967 I drove out to the Midwest from New York in my VW bug. To my surprise, as soon as I arrived in Madison, someone pointed him out, sitting on the Terrace of the Wisconsin Memorial Union in his short sleeve shirt, smoking his pipe, and arguing intensely with a group of students who were planning to sit in to block the Dow Chemical Company campus recruiter in the Fall (Dow was chosen because the company was manufacturing napalm).

Abstract. Rainfall frequency analysis is an essential tool for the design of water related infrastructure. It can be used to predict future flood magnitudes for a given magnitude and frequency of extreme rainfall events. This study analyses the application of rainfall partial duration series (PDS) in the vast growing urban Madinah city located in the western part of Saudi Arabia. Different statistical distributions were applied (i.e. Normal, Log Normal, Extreme Value type I, Generalized Extreme Value, Pearson Type III, Log Pearson Type III) and their distribution parameters were estimated using L-moments methods. Also, different selection criteria models are applied, e.g. Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), Corrected Akaike Information Criterion (AICc), Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC) and Anderson-Darling Criterion (ADC). The analysis indicated the advantage of Generalized Extreme Value as the best fit statistical distribution for Madinah partial duration daily rainfall series. The outcome of such an evaluation can contribute toward better design criteria for flood management, especially flood protection measures.

The idea of symmetry, which is used to describe the shape of a probability distribution, is a key concept in the theory of probability. The use of symmetric and asymmetric distributions is common in statistical inference, decision-making, and probability calculations. This article introduces a novel asymmetric model for assessing risks under a skewed claims dataset. The new distribution is also employed for both censored and uncensored validation testing. Four estimation methods, maximum likelihood, ordinary least squares, L-Moment, and Anderson Darling, were used for the risk assessment and analysis. To explain the exposure to risk within actuarial claims data, we introduced five crucial indicators, namely value-at-risk, tail-value-at-risk, tail variance, tail mean-variance, and mean excess losses. A numerical and graphical analysis is presented to assess the actuarial risk. Furthermore, the article discusses a newly developed Rao Robson Nikulin statistic for censored and uncensored validation testing. The validation testing also involved the insurance claims dataset.

The objective of the research described in this article is a repeat analysis and comparison of social media communication channels used in Czech, Slovak and Swiss product innovation‑oriented companies, where the Swiss set of companies is used as a benchmark. The research is conducted using the same methodology as previous research described in Chlebovský (2015). The use of the same methodology allows comparison of the both research results and discussion on the development of social media use in marketing communication of production innovation‑oriented companies in selected countries. The primary research was carried out by scanning the social media use of the selected companies. European company database Amadeus, provided by Bureau van Dijk, was used for company selection in all three countries under the same search criteria. The set of companies researched covers the highest turnover product innovation‑oriented companies. Each particular sample set covered 100 companies from each country. The activity of the selected companies on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn were observed and particular metrics were scaled. Microsoft Excel was used for storing, statistical processing and graphic outputs of the research. The hypotheses formulated were statistically tested and the results confirmed. In order to confirm or reject normal data distribution, the Anderson‑Darling Normality Test was performed through all three sample sets. This test rejected normal data distribution for all three data sets. The non‑parametric Mann‑Whitney U test was then used to test the hypothesis. Evaluation of the results in comparison with previous research shows an increase in use of social media in communication of Czech and Slovak companies. Hypothesis tests show that Czech product innovation‑oriented companies are statistically equal in activity and success in communication through social media compared to the Swiss benchmark. Slovak companies are still behind the Swiss benchmark.

The state of global freshwater ecosystems is increasingly parlous with water resource development degrading high-conservation wetlands. Rehabilitation is challenging because necessary increases in environmental flows have concomitant social impacts, complicated because many rivers flow between jurisdictions or countries. Australia’s Murray–Darling Basin is a large river basin with such problems encapsulated in the crisis of its Ramsar-listed terminal wetland, the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth. Prolonged drought and upstream diversion of water dropped water levels in the Lakes below sea level (2009–2010), exposing hazardous acid sulfate soils. Salinities increased dramatically (e.g. South Lagoon of Coorong >200 g L–1, cf. modelled natural 80 g L–1), reducing populations of waterbirds, fish, macroinvertebrates and littoral plants. Calcareous masses of estuarine tubeworms (Ficopomatus enigmaticus) killed freshwater turtles (Chelidae) and other fauna. Management primarily focussed on treating symptoms (e.g. acidification), rather than reduced flows, at considerable expense (>AU$2 billion). We modelled a scenario that increased annual flows during low-flow periods from current levels up to one-third of what the natural flow would have been, potentially delivering substantial environmental benefits and avoiding future crises. Realisation of this outcome depends on increasing environmental flows and implementing sophisticated river management during dry periods, both highly contentious options.

Heterotrophic organic-carbon cycling is a major source of energy to aquatic food webs, yet there are few studies into patterns of heterotrophic productivity in large lowland rivers. The Lachlan River experienced a period of extreme flow variability from September 2010 to February 2011; for example, daily discharge (ML day–1) at one site reached >22 times its 10-year average. Heterotrophic cycling of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) were assessed over this period at six sites on the Lachlan River. Concentrations of total organic carbon (TOC) ranged from 7 to 30 mg L–1, of which the majority was in dissolved form. Concentration of DOC was positively correlated with daily discharge. Biochemical oxygen demand of TOC over 5 days (BOD5) showed significant variability, ranging from 0.6 to 6.6 mg O2 L–1. BOD5 did not appear related to discharge, but instead to a range of other factors, including regulation via weirs, lateral and longitudinal factors. Partitioning of DOC and POC showed that POC had an influence on BOD5 comparable to DOC. This is relevant to environmental-flow management in the Lachlan River, the Murray–Darling Basin and rivers generally, by showing that flow variability influences a fundamental ecosystem characteristic, namely organic carbon.

In practice, profit tax payments are (1) made more frequently than annually and (2) can be made in advance. To study the influence of these two factors on the financial indicators of a company, we generalized the Brusov–Filatova–Orekhova (BFO) theory for the case of advance profit tax payments with an arbitrary frequency for the first time. Using modified BFO formulae, we showed that all financial indicators of a company, such as company value, the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) and equity cost (ke), depend on the frequency of the profit tax payments. We found that the WACC increased with the payments and the company value decreased with the payments. This meant that more infrequent payments could be beneficial for the company. The tilt angle of the equity cost (ke(L)) also increased with the payments. Depending on the age of the company, the equity cost either decreased with L for all payment frequencies or increased for some frequencies. We compared the obtained results to those that we described recently for profit tax payments at the end of the financial period and found them to be totally different. We found that in spite the fact that the WACC decreased with the payments and the company value increased with the payments, the WACC value in this case turned out to be bigger and the company value turned out to be smaller than in the case of advance profit tax payments of any frequency. This underlined the importance of advance profit tax payments. Regulator recommendations were also developed to encourage the practice of advance profit tax payments due to the understanding of the benefits of this for both parties: the companies and the state. A new effect was discovered: the decrease in equity cost with an increase in the level of leverage (L).

We investigated the cytotoxic effects of CO2 incubators manufactured by company A on the growth of three cell lines, BALB 3T3, L-929 and V79. Proliferation of BALB 3T3 and L-929 cells was markedly inhibited, although BALB 3T3 were more highly susceptible than L-929, and cell growth decreased with decreasing cell density: no colonies were formed when 100 BALB 3T3 or L-929 cells per dish were plated. The growth of V79 cells, however, was not affected. Further, a drastic reduction in colony formation was observed when BALB 3T3 cells were plated in media that had been preincubated in an incubator from company A, then cultured in a different incubator that had previously been shown to have no such cytotoxic effects. All the incubators used in this investigation were shown to be mechanically and electronically in good condition, and to be operating perfectly, being able to maintain temperature, humidity and CO2 concentration satisfactorily. This study suggests that the cytotoxic effect of company A's incubators is being caused by chemical contamination from materials used during manufacture.

Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a heterologous hematological malignancy in which the p53-mutated subset is associated with the most guarded prognosis. Induction therapy for AML with cytarabine (cytosine arabinoside, ARA-C) is routinely used in combinations with anthracyclines. Annamycin (ANN) is an antitumoral anthracycline whose anti-leukemia activity, in contrast to doxorubicin (DOX) and daunorubicin, is unaffected by P-glycoprotein (ABCB1)-related multidrug resistance (MDR1). Unlike conventional anthracyclines, ANN accumulates in multidrug resistant cell lines, inducing DNA damage and apoptosis. Additionally, in preclinical toxicology studies, ANN displayed a greatly reduced cardiotoxicity profile compared to DOX. A liposomal formulation of ANN, termed L-Annamycin (L-ANN), is being evaluated in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in two phase Ib/IIa clinical trials in both the US and Europe. The patients are stringently followed for cardiotoxicity (Shephard et al., ASH 2020, submitted). There was no decrease in ejection fractions observed in any of the 20 patients treated to date and all cardiotoxicity biomarkers including troponin remained normal. In addition, echocardiogram analyses by the Duke cardio-oncology lab, and independently by a cardio-oncologist at Cleveland Clinic, were all normal. Considering that cardiotoxicity and MDR1-limited anthracyclines like daunorubicin are routinely used in a combination with ARA-C as induction therapy in AML, we here evaluated the combination of Ara-C with L-ANN pre-clinically. Objective: The objective of the study was to assess in vivo efficacy of the combination of L-ANN with ARA-C in a pre-clinical model of AML. Methods: The efficacy of L-ANN alone or in combination with ARA-C was investigated in a highly aggressive AML mouse model characterized by the p53-/-, MLL, ENL-FLT3, ITD mutations and genetically tagged with the cyan fluorescent protein mTurquoise2 for flow cytometry and microscopic visualization. L-ANN was intravenously administered at different dosing regimens (days 1, 2, 3 or 1, 3, 5 weekly, or 1 dose of 4 mg/kg once a week). ARA-C was administered by 5 daily intraperitoneal injections at 50 mg/kg, which was repeated every other week up to 3 times. The level of leukemia cells in peripheral circulation was analyzed by flow cytometry and AML cell presence in organ tissues was imaged by thick-mount fresh tissue confocal microscopy, in various disease stages. Results: In all tested L-ANN administration regimens (days 1, 2, 3 or 1, 3, 5 weekly, or 1 dose of 4 mg/kg once a week), we observed a significant increase in the survival of ANNARAC cohorts (combination of L-ANN with ARA-C), when compared with the respective single agents. Specifically, upon intravenous infusion of 1x105 AML1-mTurq2 cells into syngeneic immunocompetent C57BL6 mice, lethal AML disease developed with median survival of 14 days. Administration of L-ANN on a weekly basis significantly delayed leukemia progression, as evaluated by flow cytometry and fluorescence microscopy, resulting in survival increase to 34 to 40 days, in multiple experiments. The mice treated with 50 mg/kg of ARA-C daily for 5 days a week every other week using intraperitoneal injections showed moderate to limited response to the therapy with median survival ranging from 17 to 30 days. In contrast, the median survival of animals treated with the L-ANN/ARA-C combination using different schedules ranged from 44 to 76 days, with a fraction of animals living more than 180 days after implantation of AML cells. Remarkably, imaged on day 36, the bone marrow, spleen and lungs of mice receiving combination of L-ANN (4 mg/kg once a week) with ARA-C (50 mg/kg five times per week) showed no residual disease. These results are consistent with the increased survival observed for this combination. Conclusion: This study demonstrated vastly higher efficacy of the L-ANN/ARA-C combination (ANNARAC) over that of the single agents in an immune-competent setting of an aggressive, p53-null AML model. Overall, these experiments indicate that L-ANN has the capacity to sensitize AML cells to the ARA-C induction regimen and support initiation of clinical development of L-ANN in combination with ARA-C in AML patients. Backgrounds: The government has the task of collecting, purifying and distributing clean water from water terminals via water channels, pipes or tank cars (in administrative management units with economic activities) to homes, industrial companies or other commercial uses. For this reason, Local water company has the responsibility to provide clean water for all groups of people in an area. Methods: This type of research is observational research with a descriptive approach to get an overview of the quality of Local water company Tirta Anoa's processed water. Water quality sampling was carried out in 9 sub-districts in West Kendari District, which is the sub-district with the largest population of 44,290 people. Results: The results of the pollution index analysis for TDS parameters show that river waters in the study study area at 7 monitoring points are still classified as meeting water quality standards, namely still below 1,000 mg/L. The highest TDS content was found at station 5 (AB.03 = 611 mg/L) and station 6 (AB.04 = 614 mg/L), while the lowest TDS value was at station 2 (AB.02 = 193 mg/L). And the concentration of TSS parameters is still below the quality standard, namely monitoring point 1 (AP.01 to 5 (AB.05) respectively 4.7 mg/L; 3.4 mg/L; 2.6 mg/L ; 3.7 mg/L; 3.9 mg/L; Conclusion: There is water quality (physics, chemistry, biology) from Local water company Tirta Anoa processed water which has been consumed by the community in West Kendari.

Streszczenie:
This paper studies the optimal solution model of manufacturer based on multivariate linear programming and analytic hierarchy process.Firstly, based on visual processing, the evaluation indexes are determined as supply quantity, full rate, stable rate and order times.Reasonably set the weight, evaluate 402suppliers and determine the 50 most important suppliers for the enterprise. Then, using the linear programming optimization method, the optimal solution of supplier selection without transportation loss is obtained. Finally, taking the full rate, loss variance and acceptance rate as the evaluation indexes, the transportation company with the lowest transportation loss is determined. Finally, the most economical material quantity actually needed by the production enterprise is calculated, and the supplier selection andtransportation company selection under the condition of loss are given.

Increases in deep drainage below the root-zone can lead to secondary salinity. Few data were available for drainage under dryland cropping and pastures in the Queensland Murray–Darling Basin (QMDB) before this study. Modelled estimates were available; however, without measured drainage these could not be validated. Soil chloride (Cl) mass-balance was used to provide an extensive survey of deep drainage. The method is ‘backward-looking’ and can detect low rates of drainage over longer times. Soil Cl and other soil properties were collated for a number of soils, mostly Vertosols and Sodosols, for paired native vegetation, cropped and sometimes pasture sites, from historical data and new soil sampling. Large amounts of salt and Cl had accumulated under native vegetation (Cl mean 25 t/ha, range 6–54, in 2.4 m depth), due to low rates of drainage. Steady-state Cl balances for native vegetation gave average drainage of 1.2 mm/year at wetter, eastern sites and 0.3 mm/year for Sodosols and Grey Vertosols in drier, western areas. Chloride profiles were mostly of a shape indicating matrix/piston flow. One site (Hermitage fallow trial) appeared to be affected by diffusion of Cl to a watertable. The Cl profiles from 14 longer term cropping sites (18–70 years), mainly used for winter cropping/summer fallow, indicate: (i) large losses of Cl since clearing (mean 50%, range 13-85% for 0–1.5 m soil); and (ii) drainage rates from transient Cl balance are a relatively low percentage of rainfall but are considerably higher than under native vegetation. Drainage averaged 8 mm/year and ranged from 2 to 18 mm/year. This variation is partly explained by rainfall (R2 = 0.63) (500–730 mm/year) and soil plant-available water capacity (R2 = 0.77) (80–300 mm). Deep drainage increases with increasing rainfall and with decreasing available water capacity. Drainage under pasture was less than under cropping but greater than under native vegetation. The deep drainage water (leachate) was of poor quality and will increase salinity if added to good quality groundwater. Leachate at nine sites was too saline to be used (undiluted) for irrigation (>2500 mg Cl/L) and was marginal at the remainder of sites (~800 mg Cl/L). Cropping areas in the QMDB have the precursors for secondary salinity development—high salt loads and an increase in drainage after clearing. The Vertosols and Sodosols studied occur in 90% of croplands in the QMDB. Salinisation will depend on the properties of the underlying regolith and groundwater systems.

Streszczenie:
Salinisation in lowland areas of the Murray–Darling Basin, Australia, has had noticeable effects on fish. The endangered endemic Murray hardyhead Craterocephalus fluviatilis is distributed patchily and confined mainly to saline waters (0.4–20 g L–1), whereas the unspecked hardyhead C. stercusmuscarum fulvus has a more continuous distribution but is absent from high salinities (>10). Osmoregulation was compared in these two congeners and an estuarine atherinid, the small-mouth hardyhead Atherinosoma microstoma, over a wide salinity range (0.03–85). All three species are euryhaline, although the osmoregulatory ability of C. s. fulvus falters above ~35 salinity. In low salinity (<1), C. fluviatilis is a better osmoregulator than A. microstoma, but both species tolerate hypersaline conditions (85). These data imply a physiological reason for the predominance of C. fluviatilis in inland saline waters, but the reasons for its absence from freshwater habitats (<0.4) remain unclear. The findings have implications for other freshwater fish, especially populations of closely related species, subjected to the effects of salinisation or other stressors.

Streszczenie:
Intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) equations have important applications in several engineering areas such as urban drainage designs, hydrological modeling, and soil conservation projects. This study analyzes the annual maximum series and fits IDF equations for 44 rainfall stations in Alagoas State, Brazil. We adjusted parameters of the Gumbel distribution (GD) and the Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. The fitting of the observed data to the probability distributions, as well as the selection of the best distribution, were based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Anderson-Darling tests at a 5% significance level. The GEV distribution with parameters obtained by the L-moments method was considered the best in 73% of rainfall stations. The estimated IDF equations showed a good fit, with determination coefficients above 0.991. The maximum rainfall intensities have spatial variation following the climatic zones of the state. The fitted equations allow estimating rainfall intensities from 5 minutes to 24 hours with a return period of 2 to 100 years, and standard error of less than 6.83 mm h-1.
