Abstract. This research focused on eco-religion of indigenous Sundanese local community of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar at Southern Halimun Mountain on how to manage sustainable environment. The Kampong Cengkuk is one of several kampongs that still follow the tradition of indigenous local community of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar for hundred years. This descriptive qualitative research aims to reveal the internal and external factors led to deforestation of natural forests with average around 6-8% per year. The research shows that the kampong is still practicing eco-religion tradition by protecting forestland (leuweung tutupan) only for their subsistence. The hypothesis is that the social-culture changes had been occurred in the community not only to restrict outer island agriculture in the forest, but also, in wet rice cultivation activities, to manage sustainable environment. The reduction in process and ceremonial activities also happened, which was originally eight ceremonies of outer island agriculture rituals into five ceremonies of wet rice cultivation. The more profane activities were developing economic crops in home garden. Keywords: Ecoreligion, Kampong, Environment, Forest, Tradition Abstrak.

Poverty and poor settlement problems seem inseparable from the urban living space including in Semarang City. One of the Semarang City Government policy innovations to tackle the poverty problems along with urban settlement improvement has been introduced in “GERBANG HEBAT” Program through the formation of kampung tematik (thematic kampong). In line with city development acceleration, thematic kampong needs a comprehensive planning for ensuring its sustainability. Representing a thematic kampong, Hydroponics Kampung in Tanjung Mas Subdistrict is dealing with high poverty level issue. The chosen hydroponics theme has in fact brought forward development complexity in nature against the existing coastal area characteristics. This study aims to examine the implementation of thematic kampong concept as well as the affecting factors towards its ineffectiveness. The research method applies qualitative descriptive data analysis. The results indicate the implementation process of kampong thematic concept in Hydroponics Kampung failed to encourage community empowerment. Hydroponic cultivation to which community welfare improvement sought for has no longer attractive and sustainable. The failure is caused by several factors such as poor kampong improvement planning, poor technical implementation process, the chosen thematic mismatch to the kampong potentials, and the lack of community knowledge and awareness.

Millennials have been touted as the generation that will do something about global warming. Conversely, some social scientists studying generational differences have found evidence that younger generations are less likely to engage in civic matters like environmental activism. Lack of civic engagement among Millennials may reduce their likelihood of engaging in collective action on global warming. On the other hand, the world is drastically changing. Within the recent years, climate change has become a growing concern worldwide. The various modes of destruction imposed on the environment are targeted to be the catalyst to these changes. According to climate scientists, sea level rise is one of the most important impacts of global climate change. Fishermen as one of the professions that depend their life on the sea, is affected so much by this condition. This condition might destroy their houses on the coastal area. Urban Kampong in Jakarta as the most dense human settlements in urban area has become one of the main economic generator for a city. With all the contradict characteristics and forms, urban kampongs are the part of the city that cannot be separated from one to another. The existence of kampong has become the main embryo of the development of Jakarta. Jakarta is one of the biggest coastal city in the world. The coastline of this city has become the main economic generator for the coty and the nations. The existence of fishermen’s kampong in Jakarta has also become an essential program for the city, in order to fullfill the needs of fresh catch of sea products. Therefore, The project is aimed to create a sustainable and adaptive coastal kampong community, that has the resilience to the rising sea level. By concerning on the kampong’s behaviour, and doing research of the typological transformation of the kampong, the design is also expected to serve as an archetype fot the future development of endagered coastal settlements all across the country. several sustainable approach and behaviourial approach are also injected in this project to create a contextual design that would help the kampong to grow, and adapt to all the conditions, and situation in the future.

Then from these data are associated with theories about the concept of affordance and character of the village community. The results achieved stated that the riverside communal space and the middle communal space of the village had different roles to accommodate the social behavior of the community. Central village communal space tends to act as physical affordances through existing facilities. While riverfront communal spaces tend to act as sensory affordances through the thermal comfort that was formed.

This thesis is a study of women, warung (small shops) and Cicadas kampung community of Bandung, West Java. Data on warung, women, and the Cicadas kampung is based on 12 months fieldwork in 2002. To collect the data, a combination of in-depth interviews, observation and participant observation were adopted. In this research I explore the warung issue from the perspective of warung owners and other members of the kampung. ¶ From the owners’ point of view the main reason to establish warung is to extend the limited income produced by their family members to make ends meet. Other reasons are the possibility to combine income earning activities with domestic chores and social prestige. Having a warung gives more social prestige to a woman warung owner than being a domestic helper. On the other hand, having a job in the formal sector is considered better than conducting a warung business. ¶ From the kampung residents’ point of view, the reasons to shop at warung are mainly related to certain services offered by warung which are not available in other trading sectors. Warung offer small quantities of goods and credit. These services match the socioeconomic condition of the people, who are mostly low income. For the poor, warung indeed ‘support’ them by providing these affordable services which are in accord with their purchasing power. Moreover shopping at warung enables the people to save, especially when buying cooked food. For kampung people, cooking may lead to a higher cost. Proximity is another reason people shop at warung—which could be as close as next door—and this saves them transportation costs. ¶ Warung are also a social centre where people interact and discuss community affairs. Buying snacks (jajan) and credit (nganjuk) are important practices which mark the relationship between warung owners and their customers. These practices are less likely to characterize other trading sectors. ¶ More women than men run warung because having a warung enables women to combine reproductive and productive work, though this leads to the women working extremely long hours—up to 16 hours a day—to perform both tasks. Warung can also be seen as an extension of women’s domestic responsibilities, by reinvesting money and providing meals for their family.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is about the everyday cultural practices of communal television viewing by urban kampung people. It challenges the institutional frameworks and constructs about the television audience. To achieve this, the thesis looks at the cultural context of the television set and its uses in urban kampung households and the neighbourhood system. Studies on urban kampung community in Indonesia so far have focused on the socio-economic and cultural practices of the people in relation to state ideological matters (e.g. Guinness, 1989; Sullivan, 1994; Brenner, 1998). This thesis is an attempt to extend the investigation about the cultural practices of the kampung community in relation to media use in the era of competitive private television in the early 2000s. As those kampung people have existentially engaged in fashioning their own lives neither as rural subjects nor urban/ity subjects, their narratives in responding to televised images and representations (of women in particular) shape the particularity of the cultural scene of these marginalized subjects. Taking up their social economic background and the particularities of socio-cultural circumstances of the kampung, this present study takes a close look into the day-to-day communal viewing practice of the kampung female viewers of the most-watched local program on Indonesian television, that is sinetron (television drama).
Extending the argument of Ien Ang and others into the Indonesian context, the thesis concludes that the national television audience as a unified, atomistic and controllable entity, as is institutionally imagined, does not exist. Rather, watching television, particularly among the urban middle to lower class community, is a discursive practice overwhelmingly showing the diverse, particular, and unpredictable attitudes, which challenge the account of 'the audience' that characterises the industry, the state and, ironically, also the intellectual critical knowledge producers.

Streszczenie:
Urbanism in the discipline of architecture has largely been confined to the analysis of physical appearance of cities. Such an analysis may overlook the crucial issue, which is political, on the spatial formation of a city like Jakarta This formation results from the structuration process of a society where the production and reproduction of society assumes domination from one another. In a dual society, such as in the city of Jakarta, such a process has an implication of the urban form, that is, the dual quality of urbanism. This study examines this dual image of Jakarta, with a particular concern for the transformation of the inner dynamic of its social life. It concerns the triad of knowledge-power-space in which the society is produced and reproduced in the timespace dimension. The kampung is investigated as a locale of social practices, especially in regard to the low-income urban population. The idea and term tropotopia is introduced to describe urban form or spatiality that is in a continuous process of formation and transformation. The study looks particularly the history of the reproduction of society in Indonesia, where dominant social systems control allocative and authoritative resources. Such practices primarily govern the spatial formation of Jakarta. In these systems, planners and designers acting as agents have played crucial roles in the structuration of society, and of the space. Planners and designers are seen to be part of the episteme that develops and informs the poor relation of society. The dissertation concludes with a reflection on the ways in which the dual quality of Jakarta is revealed in the interplay in social practices within a triadic knowledge-power- space.

Streszczenie:
Recently, "sustainable development" has become the key concept in the integration of environmental and economic policy. However, little literature considers the links between sustainable development and urban development. This research focuses on these concepts and attempts to develop the term sustainable urban development through an investigation of the "Kampung Improvement Programme (KIP)", and particularly, a case study of Jakarta - Indonesia. The main objectives of the research are to examine the sustainability of KIPMIlT in Jakarta, specifically to analyse the physical, economic, social and environmental characteristics that positively affect urban systems and should be considered as a component of sustainable urban development as a means of improving quality of life and standards of living. The analysis is based on the data collected from two types of kampung areas: improved kampungs and unimproved kampungs. Moreover, each of these have two types of surveys: the household survey which examines the extent of movement of the people to the urban kampungs and their physical, social and economic living conditions; and the leadership survey which examines the extent to which kampungs settlers have participation, opinions, perception and satisfaction in the KIP. The study concludes that the impact of KIP of the kampung study areas in Jakarta has been to improve not only the physical and environment conditions but also the social and economic conditions of the people as a means of increasing the standards of living and improving the quality of life. In considering the implications of these findings on sustainable urban development in Jakarta, it is shown that the KIP has been concerned with the creation of balanced urban development which does not jeopardise future generations. It is based on social, economic, physical and environment activities, and integrated approach among the government, community participation and international agencies.

Abstract This chapter presents an empirical analysis of the tourist destination of Bandung in Indonesia to discuss some of the theoretical constructs of commoditization in community-based tourism and to explore how local resources are made available as an alternative to the dominant doctrines of 'economism'. To identify whether tourism development has exacerbated the existing forms of social and spatial equality or has provided alternative capital opportunities for the study area the author has collected data from three sources: (a) the internet (newspaper articles, photos and videos about the village of Kampong Rajut); (b) observations of the activities of Kampung Rajut inhabitants; and (c) interviews with eight village leaders.

Streszczenie:
For almost a decade, there has been a grassroots movement in the country that adopts placemaking in kampungs (Indonesian urban informal settlements) through cultural and contemporary art festivals. The common issues that have been faced by almost every kampung are to maintain their existence in the city where they tend to be excluded, marginalized, and demolished. Placemaking has been held with the hopes of improving the aesthetic appeal of the kampungs, creating new opportunities for the residents to develop creative output relevant to their neighborhood and communities’ specialties, and strengthening the local identity to protect kampungs from the demolishment threat (Kustiawan et al. 2015; Lieshout 2014; Prasetyo and Iverson 2013). Although many pieces of research from a different part of the world have shown that "temporal" place-making through cultural and art festivals provides many social benefits to the individual and their communities, it seems to be unclear from the global South context. Consequently, uncertainties exist whether place-making brings positive impacts on social aspects of residents in the context of developing countries, particularly those who live in problematic areas such as urban informal settlement dwellers. It is indeed an area that has been little explored in the place-making literature (Lew 2017). Therefore, this study will contribute to understanding the implications of place-making towards the public life of informal settlers, particularly in Indonesia. The main purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of place-making on the local capacity in Indonesian kampung. The research was carried out using a sequential mixedmethods in Bustaman, Semarang. Results from multiple regression analysis showed that placemaking through regular "everyday life" and temporal "festivals" have significantly influenced local empowerment. While the qualitative findings further explained that place-making can promote local empowerment by encouraging youth's participation, increasing the organizational and mobilizational capacity of the local community, providing knowledge exchange, and broadening local community’s perspectives about their place and community. This study also demonstrated that different types of place-making bring a different kind of impact towards particular socio-economic groups. Therefore, to achieve a better quality of place-making, the enhancement of relational resources between different age group is necessary. Finally, these findings raise important questions and suggestions for incorporating place-making into neighborhood planning efforts.

Streszczenie:
Housing and transportation has become a pair of factors when it comes to decision of buying a house for the middle-income. This particular group of society is unique as they are aspired to luxury yet with limited affordability, particularly in the developing countries such as Indonesia. In many cases, housing estates are built in the form similar to gated community. Built in the suburban when usually the new housing estates are located quite in far distance to facilities, the residents are forced to own private vehicle(s) to conduct their daily activities. This situation shows the tendency of automobile dependence (Newman & Kenworthy, 1996; 1999). It has also been reflected in the vehicle ownership statistics figures and the notorious traffic congestion of Indonesian cities. The middle-income housing and their gated community has not only impacted their own travel pattern but also the residents living in kampung adjacent to their housing estate. Kampung dwellers have also reflected the middle-income characteristics with their lifestyle and automobile dependence. It has become eminent in suburban Bandung where pockets of kampung are found to be hidden amidst the housing estates whilst cars are parked on the roadsides. This is problematic in terms of affordability where they cannot really afford to own a car or motorbike as well as to rent a parking space since they usually live in small houses at kampung. To understand the above phenomenon, this paper tries to explore the extent of automobile dependency of the residents living at housing estate and its adjacent kampung at three locations. Data collected from questionnaires and group interviews are descriptively analysed. Results have shown that most residents travel in far distance to reach their job location but do not travel in far distance to conduct their shopping, studying, and exercise activities though some of them own a motorbike. The latter is due to the presence of mobile green grocers, warung, traditional markets, good quality schools, sport facilities and open spaces within walking distance to their houses. However, these nearby facilities are regularly visited mostly because the residents can travel within shorter distance through access points made available for public use. These access points help to create a network of alleys and streets connecting kampung and these facilities through the housing estates. When these access points are restricted or non-existed, the travel pattern would differ as has been uttered by the kampung dwellers. In one of the cases, the following disconnections between the kampung alleys and streets of housing estates have made the kampung dwellers altered either the location or the transportation mode of their activities. There are lessons to be learned from these travel patterns. Housing estate development shall always have access to the kampung that have existed and vice versa. Such spatial connections may contribute to a change of travel behaviour from automobile dependence to active travel. However, it should be kept in mind that these results may not be generally applicable to other places with different socio-economic and spatial characters. Further work in the field may be benefited from more cases and larger population sample.
