Streszczenie:
The historiography of Judaism in the rabbinic period (together with its implications for the history of Christianity) had been, until quite recently, founded on the assumption that the kind of historical information that rabbinic legends could yield was somehow directly related to the narrative contents that they displayed, which were understood as more or less reliable depending on the critical sensibility of the scholar. This scholarship was not, of course, generally naïve or pious in its aims or methods. A recurring question within such research had to do with the question of the credibility of a given text or passage of rabbinic literature or the recovery of its “historical kernel.” For the method or approach that I take up, all texts are by definition equally credible, for the object of research is the motives of the construction of the narrative itself, that is taken to attest to the political context of its telling or retellingrather than to the context of the narrative's content. All texts inscribe the social practices within which they originate, and many also seek to locate the genealogy of those social practices in a narrative of origins, producing a reversal of cause and effect. This reversal is a mode of narration that is particularly germane to the project of replacing traditional patterns of belief and behavior (“We have always done it this way”) with new ones that wish nevertheless to claim the authority, necessarily, of hoary antiquity—in short, to the invention of orthodoxies.

On this essay, we will present to the reader Justin Martyr, a IIcentury Christian philosopher and theologian. To accomplish this task,we will give a brief summary of the use of the term διδάσκαλος in theGreek poetic and philosophical literature, in Flavius Josephus and theNew Testament. Onwards, we will reconstruct the essential elements ofJustin’s philosophical school at Rome. Aditionally, we will present Justin’sbiographical data and a critical analysis of his legal procedure andconviction, as transmited by the Acta Iustini, Rescencion A. Finally, we willdo a stylistic analysis of Justin’s Apology.

AbstractAmong the polyphonic theology of the »church fathers« of the first centuries, Justin, who lived from about 100-165, who led a Christian school in Rome and died there as a martyr, contributes an important voice. He is concerned with the conversation between Christianity and pagan philosophy as well as Judaism, and in this seeks to prove the supremacy of Christianity. To accomplish this, he also emphasizes the proximity between Christianity and Platonism. His theology can be analyzed and structured in terms of ethics, anthropology, the doctrine of God and the Logos, demonology, and eschatology. The Christian tradition received and discussed Justin and his ideas up until the fourth century, while the pagan world opposed him, most strongly through the critical response of the philosopher Celsus.

Streszczenie:
This article focuses on Justin Martyr’s apologetical intent in his use of the term ‘logos’, recognizing ambiguity and word-play. The lengthy, complex discussions of Justin’s use of ‘logos’ (from early Christian debates on subordinationism, to more recent claims of A. Harnack regarding Justin’s ‘Hellenization’), have neglected the apologetical aspect. The author highlights the epistemological character of Justin’s central part/whole argument. Accordingly, both the position which understands Justin affirming a general revelation that gives more than partial access to truth outside of Christ (H. Chadwick), as well as one which affirms an unbridgeable chasm in knowledge of truth between Christians and unbelievers (R. Holte) is rejected. While only Christ, as ‘logos’, gives the complete revelation of God, Justin denies that this truth was totally veiled to unbelievers; they are without excuse in unjustly persecuting Christians.”

Abstract Ethics have Iong been a neglected matter in schalarship on early Christian apologetics. However, a closer Iook at the composition of the texts of Justin Martyr teaches us how important the references to Christi an ethics actually are in the run of his argument. The external reason forthat lies in the fact that Justin wants to prove the legal proceedings against the Christians in the Roman empire to be unjust and absurd. The inner reason is that he interprets Christianity as »true philosophy«: in view of the understanding of »philosophy~< in his pagan environment, this brings about fundamental ethical implications. Both his apologies and the dialogue with Trypho show how Justin employs ethical convictions as a criterio for Christian identity and as a trait of difference between Christianity and Paganism on the one hand, and between Christianity and Judaism on the other.

Streszczenie:
AIM The purpose of this study is to assess the appropriateness of Justin Martyr‘s apologetical arguments as contained in his genuine works, namely First and Second Apologies and Dialogue with Trypho the Jew, in response to the so-called “five-fold attack” against Christianity in the second century AD. Methodologically, by ‘appropriate‘ in this study is meant ‘suitable‘ or ‘proper,‘ taking into account the rhetorical and literary conventions of second-century Graeco-Roman culture, the contemporary social situation, Justin‘s rhetorical and/or intended audience and his purpose. Would Justin‘s arguments from the point of view of second-century standards have been reasonable, possessing at least a potential for effectiveness, or would they have been either ignored, dismissed without serious consideration, or even worsened the plight for Christians? I believe this work fills a significant gap in our knowledge of Justin, being the first time a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness, or otherwise, of Justin‘s arguments has been made in one single study. SCOPE This Thesis is divided into six major chapters, plus a Conclusion: (i) In Chapter One I provide a brief introduction discussing how and why the Apologists emerged during the second century AD to meet the challenges of the day, as well as outlining the aim and scope of this study. (ii) In Chapter Two I discuss the nature of Christian Apology, its relationship to petitions to the Roman emperors, and how it compares to other (non-Christian) apologetic, protreptic, educational and missionary discourses. I also examine the rhetorical and literary conventions of the second century Graeco-Roman world and outline how Justin employed rhetoric in his three known works. (iii) In Chapter Three I outline in detail the particular attacks experienced by the Christians in Justin‘s time. (iv) In Chapter Four I examine the questions of intended destination, structure and purposes of Justin‘s apologetical works. (v) In Chapter Five I analyse the appropriateness of Justin‘s apologetical arguments in 1 and 2 Apologies. (vi) In Chapter Six I analyse the appropriateness of Justin‘s apologetical arguments in Dialogue. In all, eight distinct arguments from the Apologies (Behaviour, Beliefs, Due Process, Threat, Similitude, Dependence/Source, Antiquity/Prophecy, Miracles) and four distinct arguments from Dialogue (Superiority, Fulfilled Prophecy, Miracles, True Israel) are outlined in detail and then analysed giving the reasons for and against their appropriateness. CONCLUSIONS In my Conclusion, I argue that all of Justin‘s arguments were appropriate for one or more reasons, with only the argument of Threat in the Apologies being largely inappropriate. At the same time, all his arguments contained notable weaknesses, except for the argument of Similitude. The following table is provided, listing each of Justin‘s apologetical arguments and the number of reasons I give for their respective appropriateness/inappropriateness, together with a yes/no/mixed conclusion in the final column: [Table not shown].This table is simplistic, nevertheless it does illustrate that the question of appropriateness is rarely a simple one, as more often than not there exist simultaneous reasons for and against the appropriateness of any particular argument. How has this study furthered our knowledge and understanding of Justin and his apologetical works? What can we conclude about Justin and his works based on the appropriateness or inappropriateness of his arguments? It is clear that for both the Apologies and Dialogue the strengths of Justin‘s arguments outweigh their weaknesses. The strengths generally pertain to philosophical, religious, or ethical aspects of the works that are presented logically and cogently while the weaknesses, by and large, result from Justin‘s tendency towards arrogance and abuse. Justin wrote very much the way he lived. As a philosopher and skilled debater Justin was not above offending and demeaning those with whom he did not agree if he thought this would increase the reception of his message. His brilliance and arrogance proved to be a lethal combination and led to his ultimate silencing. It perhaps also curtailed the effectiveness of his writings for no change of policy was ever effected during his lifetime, or at least universally implemented.

This research aims to identify the guidelines that are opposed to Judaism in the body of the work Dialogue with Trypho of Justin Martyr, using the methodology engendered by Norbert Elias and John L. Scotson in their work, The Established and the Outsiders. As a result, our research intends to contribute to unveil another aspect of Justin’s work, considered by many scholars as a proselytistic tool; by taking it as a document builder of the Christian identity trough its dissociation from Judaism. For this reason, this thesis investigates and reviews the socio-cultural and political environment that gave rise to Roman Christianity, taking into consideration Christian internal conflicts and the resulting dichotomies within the Roman Christian community, as a result of its departure from its Jewish matrix.

The intention of this study is to analyze the proposal of the making of Christian identity from the work entitled First Apology, by Justin Martyr. We believe that in the formation of Christianity, some authors such as Justin, promoted the project of creating a Christian identity, from the rules and practices that should equalize / standardize the fact of being a Christian in the first and second centuries A.D. Justin, in his First Apology, indicates what should be done and what should be avoided to be considered Christian, and such discourse allows the production of identity characteristics. To achieve this goal, we investigated the relationships of interculturality in the first and second centuries A.D, we researched and presented specific aspects of author and his work, such as: its dating, the extant manuscripts, the genre, the historical context, etc. Finally, in the last chapter, we presented closely at particular aspects of the First Apology: its internal structure, his idea about Jesus, the Jewish prophecies, the Christians as a race, those who were not Christians and the groups considered heretical, the relationship of the author with the stoicism and the Platonism, the author s intention in drawing up his speech and, finally, about the Christian identity proposed by him seen from the data above.

Ehorn, Seth. "Citation of Psalm 68(67).19 in Ephesians 4.8 within the context of early Christian uses of the Psalms". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/17946.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the citation of Ps 68(67).19 in Eph 4.8. Following an introduction that introduces the problem of the altered wording in the citation in Eph 4.8, chapter 2 comprises a History of Research that is organised around the possible sources for the author’s citation in Eph 4.8. One of several conclusions made is that the proclivity of NT scholars to attribute the source text to particular Jewish traditions has contributed to overlooking the import of Ps 68(67).19 within a normal pattern of christological reading of the Psalms in early Christianity. Following these opening chapters, the thesis is divided broadly into Part One and Part Two. The first is deconstructive in nature; the second is constructive. Part One examines textual traditions of Ps 68(67).19 within Justin Martyr, the Peshitta Psalter, and Targum Psalms. Each of these sources share the reading ‘give’ rather than ‘receive’, raising the question of the relationship between these traditions and Eph 4.8. Chapter 3 examines Justin’s Dialogue with Trypho, which contains two citations of Ps 68(67).19 that strongly resemble Ephesians. Nevertheless, as nearly all interpreters acknowledge, Justin never refers directly to ‘Paul’ or ‘Pauline’ letters in any of his writings. Is the parallel wording of Justin’s citations evidence for an early Christian tradition that was also available to Ephesians? I argue that although unmentioned by name, a reasonable case can be made that Justin is familiar with the Pauline corpus, including Eph 4.8. Chapter 4 considers the evidence of Peshitta Psalms, which agrees with the reading of Eph 4.8 in a strand of its copyist tradition. After examining scholarly construals of the Peshitta MS tradition, I consider direct evidence for the influence of Eph 4.8 upon some Peshitta MSS as intimated by Theodore of Mopsuestia. Chapter 5 examines Targum Psalms, focusing on translation techniques and the targumist’s tendency to add, alter, or modify his source in various ways. I argue that when the targumist’s techniques and tendencies are taken into consideration, the targum’s reading ‘give’ is better understood as a typical targumic insertion. The proclivity of many scholars to link Targum Psalms to Eph 4.8 is a classic example of ‘parallelomania’. Part Two turns to make a constructive case for the citation found in Eph 4.8. Chapter 6 is a close examination of the author of Ephesians’ approach to literary borrowing. I consider both his citations from the Jewish scriptures and his use of Colossians as evidence. Chapter 7 examines how early Christians read the biblical Psalms as prophecies. Following a survey of Jewish readings of the Psalms, this chapter surveys how early Christians read the Psalms in light of the death and resurrection- exaltation of Christ. Drawing insights from this, chapter 8 turns to consider the phrases ‘he ascended . . . he gave gifts’ in Eph 4.8. I argue that an ambiguity of the addressee in the text of Ps 68(67).19 allowed for the application of this text to Christ. Moreover, the ‘ascent’ language could easily be applied to the resurrection- exaltation and this association naturally led to the language of gift-giving in Eph 4.8. Chapter 9 considers how the citation of Ps 68(67).19 fits into the context of Ephesians 4, focusing on several important factors such as the language of descent in Eph 4.9–10. Part One and Part Two are followed by a short conclusion that summarises the thesis and draws out several conclusions and implications based upon this study.

The application of integrated survey techniques and 3D modelling methodologies for Cultural Heritage analysis is now considered a consolidated process, while preserving and suggesting continuous research lines related from one side to the evolution of acquisition and restitution instruments, from the other to the problems linked to the specific case study and the goal of the research. This article describes the analysis of one of the largest and best-preserved gates of Rome, located within the Aurelian walls: Porta San Sebastiano. The original name of this gate was Porta Appia, transformed in the Middle Ages into San Sebastiano from the name of the Christian martyr buried in the Basilica on the Via Appia, located just outside the walls. The current gate aspect is the result of many architectural changes over the centuries, as well as a transformation happened in the twentieth century which has led it to a residential use, a unique example of its kind. Through the integration of different survey techniques, a geometric analysis of the complex building is completed, highlighting the construction complexity and the spatial articulation. A parametric model of a portion of the building is then suggested, aimed at understanding the logic underlying the definition of a HBIM model related to an existing complex artefact. Through an integrated analysis, the aim of the article is to provide an advancement in the knowledge of the specific Cultural Heritage through the integration of complementary methods of analysis and representation.

Methane and ethane are the two main components of natural gas and typically constitute more than 95% of it. In this study, a mixture of 90% CH4 /10% C2H6 diluted in 99% Ar was studied at fuel lean (ϕ = 0.5) conditions, for pressures around 1, 4, and 10 atm. Using laser absorption diagnostics, the time histories of CO and H2O were recorded between 1400 and 1800 K. Water is a final product from hydrocarbon combustion, and following its formation is a good marker of the completion of the combustion process. Carbon monoxide is an intermediate combustion species, a good marker of incomplete/inefficient combustion, as well as a regulated pollutant for the gas turbine industry. Measurements such as these species time histories are important for validating and assessing chemical kinetics models beyond just ignition delay times and laminar flame speeds. Time-history profiles for these two molecules measured herein were compared to a modern, state-of-the-art detailed kinetics mechanism as well as to the well-established GRI 3.0 mechanism. Results show that the H2O profile is accurately reproduced by both models. However, discrepancies are observed for the CO profiles. Under the conditions of this study, the measured CO profiles typically increase rapidly after an induction time, reach a maximum and then decrease. This maximum CO mole fraction is often largely over-predicted by the models, whereas the depletion rate of CO past this peak is often over-estimated by the models for pressures above 1 atm. This study demonstrates the need to improve on the accuracy of the HCCO reactions involved in CO formation for pressures of practical interest for the gas turbine industry.

Streszczenie:
Patients frequently experience knee injuries, with the ACL being one of the most commonly injured structures requiring surgery [1]. ACL tears typically lead to osteoarthritis in the long term, even after surgical treatment [2]. This chronic joint degeneration has been attributed to the failure of current ACL reconstructions to restore the native biomechanics of the knee joint [3]. To design more effective treatments, investigators must first understand normal knee function for multiple activities of daily living (ADLs). The 3D in vivo forces and moments of the normal intact knee, as well as those for just the ACL have not yet been determined for any ADL. These in vivo forces and moments can potentially be measured for multiple ADLs in an animal model. A biomechanical surrogate allows for 1) sensors or marker systems to be rigidly fixed to the knee joint to accurately measure the 6 degree of freedom (DOF) kinematics, and for 2) the kinematics to be simulated and applied to the harvested limb to measure the corresponding joint forces and moments.

The roll motion of ships operating in a seaway is often limiting operations. These limits could be due to, e.g. maximum acceleration, green water, capsize risk or just comfort. Therefore additional roll damping is desired to prevent uncontrolled roll motion. Different means are available to decrease the roll motion of a ship, amongst other these include bilge keels, active fin stabilizers (either for forward or zero speed) and U-shape or free surface anti-roll tanks (ART). The amplitude and phase of the roll opposing moment resulting from the water that moves inside the ART are a function of the geometry of the tank and especially its internal damping. Due to the complex and non-linear nature of this flow, the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was chosen to analyse the details of the flow inside the tank and its anti-roll performance. The present paper focuses on the sensitivity and validation of the anti-roll performances of passive U-type ART using CFD. For this, the incompressible Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) code ReFRESCO was used. The sensitivity on the results for the U-tank is analysed by varying the grid resolution and the numerical time step. The two-dimensional (2D) full-scale and Froude based model-scale ReFRESCO results are compared to 2D and 3D full-scale CFD results of Delaunay (2012) [1] and Thanyamanta and Molyneux (2012) [2] and validated with model-scale experimental results of Field and Martin (1975) [3] and MARIN experimental results by Gunsing et al. (2014) [4]. This paper shows the influence of the convective scheme for capturing the free-surface interface and provides recommendations for a time step and grid resolution to effectively calculate the roll damping of an ART.

Streszczenie:
Human blood has been shown to contain two different kinin precursors, i.e0 the high and the low molecular mass kininogen0 These two kininogens release the same kinins, with the starting sequences Met-Lys-Arg-Pro-, Lys-Arg-Pro- or just Arg-Pro-depending on the releasing enzyme. The kinin starting with Arg-Pro- is denoted as bradykinin. In rats a different kininogen, called T-kininogen, is also present, especially as the major acute-phase protein in this species. The corresponding kinin, T-kinin, has the starting sequence Ile-Ser-Arg-Pro-. This type of kininogen or kinin has previously never been detected in human tissues. However, during the course of the present study evidence for existance of a third human kininogen, giving rise to human T-kinin, was obtained.Ascites from patients with metastatic ovarian carcinoma has been shown to contain high amounts of vascular permeability-increasing activity as determined by a rat skin-Evans blue test. When the ascites was fractionated by gel filtration followed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) a component could be isolated which by its total sequence and amino acid composition was identified as Ile-Ser-bradykinin. Several degradation products of this kinin were also detected as separate components in the chromatographies. The human Ile-Ser-bradykinin appeared on reversed-phase HPLC in the same position as synthetic T-kinin. It could be differentiated in this chromatography system from Met-Lys-bradykinin, Lys-bradykinin and bradykinin. It may be assumed that human Ile-Ser-bradykinin is released_ from a third, so far unidentified human kininogen which is only or predominantly expressed under certain pathophysiological conditions, and that therefore this new kinin might be employed as a tumor marker.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Sit-to-stand-walk (STW) is a complex task that sequentially transitions an individual from sitting through standing to walking. In this study we evaluate the unrestricted, natural pattern of movement of the STW task from a hospital bed of 21 (5 Female, 16 Male) frail (MFS > 55) adults (68.0±11.2 years) with a total of 144 unique trials. Bed height (low, medium, high) and bed rail condition (no rails, Hill-Rom®, Stryker®), were varied, generating 9 potential trial types per participant. A new STW phase, Stand Preparation, is defined specifically for the frail that occurs just prior to the Flexion Momentum Phase, also named here as the Stand Initiation Phase. In conjunction with the newly defined Stand Preparation Phase, movements used by the frail to maintain or regain balance during STW task are newly defined as corrective behaviors (CBs). These include hand, foot, leg and torso CBs. In 144 unique STW trials, 678 hand and foot CBs were observed and recorded. The most frequent CB type was the hand CB (335), followed by the foot CB (316). A coding system for use in the kinematic analysis of the natural STW task was developed that identifies CBs through visual observation. In addition, a 3D biomechanical model was generated from collected marker position data and will be used in future biomechanical analyses with the visually observed CB data. The Stand Initiation Phase contained the most CBs. Significant factors included bed height and phase, as well as their interaction (all with p-values ≤ 0.006). This is the first study to establish a more accurate and complete STW of the frail elderly, as well as to define CBs employed during their natural STW. The dataset from this coding system, along with the newly established STW phases of the frail, are currently being used for further analyses to determine the exact timing and position of fall initiations during STW of the frail.
