This book is a beginners' guide to science journalism, explaining the 21st century journalistic process, from generating story ideas to creating multimedia content when the story's written, taking in research and writing structures along the way. While many of the chapters are introductory, the book also covers topics also likely to be of interest to more experienced writers, such as storytelling techniques and investigative journalism. Readers are introduced to important debates in the field, including the role that science journalism plays; whether it is a form of `infotainment', or whether its primary role is to hold scientists and the science industry to account. Taken as a whole, what the book does particularly well is to introduce prospective science writers to the judgements they need to make as reflective practitioners.

This monograph begins a rethinking of the idea of professional journalism ethics and examines how ethics is being employed as a key differentiator between amateurs (audience members, citizen journalists, and the like) and professionals, while other once-distinguishing features of journalism have become more widely dispersed and available to the public. How do the ethics of nonprofessionals practicing journalism differ, if at all, from everyday morality? Is journalism ethics—should journalism ethics be—the exclusive domain of professionals? This monograph considers the role of ethics in defining what it means to be a professional journalist; challenges to professional journalism’s autonomy from “amateurs” and how ethics is used to maintain boundaries between them; and objectivity as a tenet of professional journalism ethics. An analysis of 2016 U.S. presidential election campaign coverage is used to explore how and why a professional journalism centered on an ethic of objectivity can fail to perform ethically.

This paper shows changes in the normative expectations of journalism through‎ an analysis of articles published in Croatian scientific journals about journalism‎ in three time periods: socialism, the transition period, and the period of‎ democratic consolidation. Using qualitative content analysis we identify a‎ total of fifteen themes related to journalism (journalistic norms, regulation,‎ sensationalism, investigative journalism, journalism and PR, organizational‎ aspects, war reporting, technological aspects, gender and journalism, media‎ freedom, democratic aspects, economic aspects, journalism education, the‎ function of journalism in a political system, and the history of journalism) and‎ nine normative roles for journalists ( gatekeeper, social-political worker, public‎ sphere promoter, watchdog, commercial role, emancipatory role, neutral‎ disseminator, advocacy role, defender of democracy). We used quantitative‎ content analysis to analyze the distribution of themes and roles. The results‎ show no unambiguous perception of journalism in academic papers during the‎ different time periods as is generally assumed in the literature on ‎media democratization and the media in transitional countries in general.

The world of journalism is complex, multifaceted, and intricate. No consensus exists on the definition of journalism or its characteristics, skill set, and career choices. Differing perceptions stem from journalism’s shifts to new forms, practices, and ways of thought. The digital revolution has drastically transformed the understanding and definition of journalism. Journalists, journalism educators, and even social critics have all offered varying notions on the field. However, the students, a key element, are often neglected in this equation. This paper explores how students view journalism. The current generation is arguably highly equipped with digital media through regular practice, consumption, and exposure to digitization. Journalists-to-be are considered to be the future shareholders and may be the directors of the profession. The study focused on how journalism and digital media students specifically classified journalism characteristics, the educational background they found necessary for journalists, as well as their work aspirations. As journalism is evolving and, in particular, digital journalism is a key factor in the study, the student sample was limited to those registered in the Journalism and Digital Media department at Al Maaref University. Al Maaref University has been categorized as one of the first universities in Lebanon to include the term “digital media” in their journalism degree in hopes of reflecting the fast-changing industry. This study used a quantitative approach based on a survey questionnaire administered online to all students enrolled in the above-mentioned department. Findings showed that the majority of students considered the top characteristics of a journalist to include traditional journalism skills before any digital journalism skills. Students also expressed areas of study at times consistent with those skills and other times consistent with their career choices. Moreover, a majority of current journalism students aspire to work in front of the camera.

In the event of breaking news, a wealth of crowd-sourced data, in the form of text, video and image, becomesavailable on the Social Web. In order to incorporate this data into a news story, the journalist mustprocess, compile and verify content within a very short timespan. Currently this is done manually andis a time-consuming and labour-intensive process for media organisations. This paper proposes SocialSemantic Journalism as a solution to help those journalists and editors. Semantic metadata, natural languageprocessing (NLP) and other technologies will provide the framework for Social Semantic Journalismto help journalists navigate the overwhelming amount of UGC for detecting known and unknown newsevents, verifying information and its sources, identifying eyewitnesses and contextualising the event andnews coverage journalists will be able to bring their professional expertise to this increasingly overwhelminginformation environment. Campus journalism is a place for students to develop their potential in the journalism field. Students who are agents of change not only provide quality news but also provide moral value in the news production process. Quality news can be raised through the role of a journalist in writing news (information). Prophetic journalism is a journalistic concept taken from the nature of the prophets. In this paper, we examine the application of the concept of prophetic journalism –journalism that imitates the prophetic characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad– among campus journalists. Prophet Muhammad is known for his four characteristics: siddiq (delivering accurate information), amanah (trustworthy as a source of information), tabligh (delivering information in its entirety), fathanah (a journalist is required to be smart in revealing the truth of the news). The data from this study is the result of observations from the daily life of the researcher when carrying out the news production process with other campus journalists ranging from electronic media (radio & television), print, and online. The results of this study indicate that campus journalists at UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya apply prophetic journalism well. By implementing the prophetic characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad when carrying out journalistic activities, journalists can maintain the professionalism of journalists. By using ethnographic research methods or commonly referred to as field research, researchers make observations as the main data and are equipped with in-depth interviews with several campus journalists. We also propose the nature of Prophet Ibrahim to be incorporated into the concept of prophetic journalism as well. Prophet Ibrahim is known for the story of his courage to seek the truth and reveal it when everyone was against it. This courage is important in supporting journalistic activities among students and professionals.

This study, which conceptualizes the “exo journalism” on the basis of the impact of AI on the journalism industry, is part of a research project of the Observatory for Information Innovation in the Digital Society (OI2). The results, derived from documentary research supported by case studies and in-depth interviews, propose that AI is a source of innovation and personalization of journalistic content and that it can contribute to the improvement of professional practice, allowing the emergence of a kind of "exo journalist", a conceptual proposal that connects the possibilities of AI with the needs of journalism’s own productive routines. The end result is the enhancement of the journalist’s skills and the improvement of the news product. The research focuses on conceptualizing a kind of support and complement for journalists in the performance of their tasks based on the possibilities of AI in the automatic generation of content and data verification.

Although narrative journalism has a long history in the Netherlands, it is in recent years being promoted as a ‘new’ genre. This study examines the motives underlying this promotional tactic. To that end, we analyze how narrative journalism is framed in (1) public expressions of the initiatives aimed at professionalization of the genre and (2) interviews with journalists and lecturers in journalism programs. Results indicate that in public discourse on narrative journalism, the genre is framed as moving, essential, and as high quality journalism. These frames indicate that the current promotion of narrative journalism as ‘new’ can be seen as a strategy that journalists apply to withstand the pressures they are facing in the competition with new media. These frames are deepened in the interviews with lecturers and practitioners, who frame narrative journalism as a dangerous game, a paradigm shift, and as the Holy Grail. These frames indicate that narrative journalism is regarded as the highest achievable goal for journalists, but that its practice comes with dangers and risks: it tempts journalists to abandon the traditional principles of objectivity and factuality, which can ultimately cause journalism to lose its credibility and authority. We discuss these findings in terms of boundary work and reflect on implications for narrative journalism’s societal function.

The combined set of skills needed for producing data journalism (e.g., investigative journalism methods, programming, knowledge in statistics, data management, statistical reporting, and design) challenges the understanding of what competences a journalist needs and the boundaries for the tasks journalists perform. Scholars denote external actors with these types of knowledge as interlopers or actors at the periphery of journalism. In this study, we follow two Swedish digital native data journalism start-ups operating in the Nordics from when they were founded in 2012 to 2019. Although the start-ups have been successful in news journalism over the years and acted as drivers for change in Nordic news innovation, they also have a presence in sectors other than journalism. This qualitative case study, which is based on interviews over time with the start-up founders and a qualitative analysis of blog posts written by the employees at the two start-ups, tells a story of journalists working at the periphery of legacy media, at least temporarily forced to leave journalism behind yet successfully using journalistic thinking outside of journalistic contexts.

The widespread adoption of networked information and communications technologies (i.e. ICTs) blurs traditional boundaries between journalist and citizen. The role of the journalist is adapting to structural changes in the news industry and dynamic audience expectations. For researchers who seek to understand what, if any, distinct role journalists play in the production and propagation of breaking news, it is vital to be able to identify journalists in social media spaces. In many cases, this can be challenging due to the limited information and metadata about social media users. In this work, we use a supervised machine learning model to automatically distinguish journalists from non-journalists in social media spaces. Leveraging Twitter data collected from three crisis events of different types, we examine how profile information, social network structure, posting behavior and language distinguish journalists from others. Additionally, we evaluate how the performance of the journalist classification model varies by context (i.e. types of crisis events) and by journalism outlets (i.e. print versus broadcast journalism), and discuss challenges in automatic journalist detection. Implications of this work are discussed; in particular we argue for the value of such methods for scaling analysis in journalism studies beyond the capacity of human coders. Employing classification methods in this context allows for systematic, large-scale studies of the role of journalists online.

‘Journalism under siege’ proclaimed the cover of The Walkley Magazine, an Australian publication dedicated to promoting journalism excellence in its March 2017 issue. This headline reflects the severe disruption journalism is experiencing globally. Facts used to be facts and news was news but now we have ‘alternative facts’ and ‘fake news’ (Media Watch, 2017). Against this backdrop, a persistent dilemma for journalism has been the impact of the law on journalists relying on confidential sources who play a critical part in providing access to information. The journalism profession’s apparent source protection gains have been undermined by legislative and other assaults, and it has had a chilling effect on journalists’ contacts with confidential sources. The Australian journalists’ union, the Media Alliance, has warned that ‘it is only a matter of time’ before a journalist is convicted for refusing to disclose a confidential source (Murphy, 2017, p. 3). This article builds on earlier work examining how Australian journalists are coping in their dealings with confidential sources. This article (a) reports on the findings from an Australian study into journalists’ confidential sources and (b) identifies lessons and reform potentials arising from these findings.

But while students can play a part, academic journalist involvement is crucial. Although it looks like a mainly peacetime, journalism seems to be on the front lines of a war, struggling to survive in the new communication environment. Journalists work in a strongly polarized political and media scene, which obscures the basic principles of the profession. While losing its ideological concept, the profession is on a socio-economic seesaw: for journalists it is precarious profession, and for editors and top menagement it strives to be an elite comfort zone. There are frequent calls on journalists to get out of the grip of media conglomerates and start doing business as entrepreneurs, although such an attitude often seems utopian. The aim of the paper is to critically analyse the role of the journalist in the new environment. The author will try to define how the role of the journalists has been redefined in the new media, social and political environment, trying to determine how these changes have affected the basic principles of the journalist's profession. The article is based on conceptual analysis of the role of journalists and principles of journalism, following these three issues/segments: in the first part, the paper will discuss on the role of the journalist through the concept of a new social stratification; in the following segment, the author will try to analyze new shape of journalism through the business model of entrepreneur journalism. In the last part, the analysis will be based on the discussion of the conceptual framework of the occupational ideology of journalism, from watchdog to opiniondog role.

ABSTRACT This research examines the principles of Nine Elements of Journalism by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel at AJI Denpasar. Seeing the current situation and the work of journalists that are racing with speed, need to be precise and other problems. Technological developments provide support for the work climate. However, can the verification process still be carried out when speed is demanded? That is one of the questions that the author wants to examine in this thesis with the formulation of the problem, namely: How is Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel's Nine Elements of Journalism Understanding of Press Workers at the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Denpasar? What are the obstacles to implementing Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel's Nine Elements of Journalism for Press Workers at the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Denpasar? What is the strategy to overcome the problem of implementing Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel's Nine Elements of Journalism for Press Workers at the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Denpasar? The theory used in this study uses S-O-R (Stimulus Organism Response) Theory, New Media Theory and SWOT Theory. This type of data collection is qualitative from primary and secondary data sources. Data collection techniques used are observation, interviews, documentation. The research findings are: 1) Most of the press workers or journalists at the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Denpasar understand the principles of Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel's Nine Elements of Journalism which were obtained in various ways such as reading books, reading information on websites or during on-the-job training or at the AJI Denpasar organization. 2) There are several points or elements of Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel's Nine Elements of Journalism which became obstacles when applied by press workers at AJI Denpasar. The most dominant is element number four, namely independence, element number five, namely journalists being monitors of power. The third element of journalism is the discipline of verification and element number seven, namely the journalist must try to make things important, interesting and relevant. The strategy to overcome these obstacles is carried out in several ways, namely strengthening newsrooms, forming media companies with donation or subscription patterns to generate income and increasing the ability of journalists. Second, the success factors of science journalism have a normative, legal, and practical basis. Third, scientific journalism has a combined function of connecting the scientific community and public. The promotion of scientific achievements is jointly carried out by professional journalists and the scientific community. Therefore, the elaboration of scientific information is important for a good perception of the content by a wide audience. The cognitive level of the scientific journalist helps him to freely use scientific theories along with other sources. The author considers that such activities should not end with the publication of scientific results by a journalist. For a journalist, high-quality publication of research results is an integral part of the success of scientific communication. The study concludes that the degree of success in scientific communication depends on several factors, including the cognitive and professional level of a journalist.

This article examines recent efforts to bring ‘solutions journalism’ – an approach to news coverage developed in the United States that encourages journalists to propose potential solutions to social problems – to the French regional press. Drawing on interviews and company documents from news organizations, we show that solutions journalism has found support among both management and journalists, though for different reasons. Whereas management see solutions journalism as a way to bolster shrinking audiences, journalists perceive an opportunity to regain relevance in diversified media companies whose emphasis on news has declined over time. Though solutions journalism changes little in terms of journalist’s everyday practices, its presence legitimates and valorizes marketing discourses, as journalists use it to describe efforts to grow audiences, boost sales and monetize content. As a result, we suggest that solutions journalism’s primary effect on the French regional press may be its operation as a ‘Trojan horse’ for marketing.

This phenomenon is also happened in islamic online media, which the subject of this communication could be an institution, or either individuals. These subjects are often violating journalism rule and ethics on the internet. The ideology of this writer and institution could be expressed on a discriminative and unfair journalism product. On the other hand, religious sentiment could also be a factor when a journalism products tend to accused a person before the law. This condition has to be evaluated, it is due to the islamic media on the internet could be an image of Islamic world as a whole. Moreover as a moslem, we are not only pay attention to the journalism code but also on Islamic value. There are many Islamic rule which stated that journalism activities linked with taqwa concept. Each of journalism activites on the media has to be based on the fairness, carefulness and critique-constructive concept. This article explores how educational qualifications, age, gender and regional context affect journalism educators’ perceptions of journalism’s normative roles and the future needs of journalism students. It draws on Australian and New Zealand/Aotearoan responses to the 2021 World Journalism Education Council (WJEC) Survey Journalistic Roles, Values and Qualifications in the 21st Century: How Journalism Educators Across the Globe View the Future of a Profession in Transition. It shows that holding a Ph.D. diminishes support for traditional observer and disseminator roles and predicts support for the mobilizer role. Age also predicts role perception; it diminishes support for the disseminator and mobilizer roles for both the current position of journalists and journalists in the next ten years. These age and education effects are independent of each other. The findings point to the need for more detailed research on the effects of further education on journalism teachers’ professional conceptions and teaching strategy.

In Germany, the study of journalism has a long tradition. Löff elholz (2004b) identifi ed the work of the writer and literary historian Robert Eduard Prutz (1816-1872) as being the ancestor of journalism theory. In 1845, long before the establishment of newspaper studies (“Zeitungskunde”) as a fi eld of research, Prutz published “The History of German Journalism.” In later years the theoretical study of journalism was dominated by normative approaches, which continued for many decades. The belief that journalistic talent, similar to artistic talent, lies in the personality of the journalist (see Dovifat 1962) endured well into the 1970’s. At this time the scholarly discussion was mainly centered on the journalist as an individual who could barley live up to the normative expectations placed on news people. The result was a long-lasting (into the 1990s) array of often romantic demands on journalists which they could hardly fulfi ll.

Live journalism is a new journalistic genre in which journalists present news stories to a live audience. This article investigates the journalistic manuscripts of live journalism performances. With the focus on texts, the article reaches beyond the live performance to explore the wider implications and potentials pioneered by live journalists. The data were gathered from <em>Musta laatikko</em> (‘Black Box’) manuscripts, a live journalism production by the Finnish newspaper <em>Helsingin Sanomat</em>. The manuscripts were analysed as <em>eudaimonic journalism</em> through four conceptual dimensions: self-transcendence, autonomy, competence, and relatedness. The results show how eudaimonic journalism can contemplate history, the future, and the meaning of finite human life. Moreover, by describing self-determinant individuals and communal social relationships, eudaimonic news stories can foster a sense of meaning and agency in audience members. By employing eudaimonia, journalists at large can reflect on the meaning and purpose of contemporary life and offer a more comprehensive understanding of the world. Such understanding includes not only facts and analysis, but also values, affects, and collective meanings mediated through the subjectivity of a journalist.

Long-running debates over the value of university-based journalism education have suffered from a lack of empirical foundation, leading to a wide range of assertions from both those who see journalism education playing a crucial role in moulding future journalists and those who do not. Based on a survey of 320 Australian journalism students from six universities across the country, this study provides an account of the professional views held by these future journalists. Findings show that students hold broadly similar priorities in their role perceptions – albeit to different intensities from working journalists. The results point to a relationship between journalism education and the way in which students' views of journalism's watchdog role and its market orientation change over the course of their degree – to the extent that, once they are near completion, students have been moulded in the image of industry professionals.

The possibilities offered by digital technology cause significant changes and transformations in the media sector. The circulations and revenues of legacy print media are falling rapidly, newspapers are closing, and journalists are losing their jobs. People follow the news online, especially on mobile devices rather than on print media. This upheaval process also reflects in the definitions of journalism and journalist. Today, there is an ongoing debate about which activity can be described as journalism and who can be described as a journalist. In this study, after pointing out the origins of the differences in the definitions of journalism and journalist, the approaches of various professional organizations are examined, and some suggestions thought to contribute to the healthy conduct of the discussions are also included. As a result, taking into account the possibilities of digital technology, which forces change and transformatüion in the field of communication as in the other fields, it is argued that the discussions should be based on whether the journalistic activity is carried out in accordance with its functionality and universal journalistic standards. This article is anchored in the theory of reflective practice. Responses of students produced a Bridge of Traits of Graduate Journalism Education that illustrates these roles and purposes of graduate studies. This Bridge of Traits also entered into the theory-and-practice discussions, not to mention that this bridge represents respondents’ efforts to connect their personal, academic and professional milieus and aspirations as journalists. Making these connections is done within the realm of journalism’s theory-practice continuum, which, as respondents surprisingly articulated, is important, complementary and applicable. Respondents’ views offer hope that university-based journalism programmes can run viable graduate journalism programmes implementing several elements in pedagogy and substance that espouse a spirit of critical reflective practice in journalists. The article describes the basic prerequisites for functioning of a phenomenon of the Ukrainian book journalism as a kind of cultural journalism. At present an increased attention to the cultural journalism from scholars and media experts is caused by the activation in sphere of the Ukrainian cultural management supported by long-term EUEastern Partnership Programme Culture and Creativity (2010―2018s). The subject of the study are both actual infrastructure of media (web portal, TV and broadcast media, blogs and vlogs) generating relevant content, as well as media workers (critics, bloggers, experts) working in this field. The generalized semantics of the terms «book journalism» and its derivatives ― «book mass media», «book journalist», have been justified. The main attention is paid to communicative efficiency of media specializing in topics related to the events and facts of the cultural life of society, especially literature and publishing (LitAzkent, Bukvoyid, Chytomo, BaraBuka, Space of Ukrainian Children’s Literature, UA: Ukrainske Radio, UA:Pershyi, UA: Kultura, Culturoprostir.ua, and so on). The most «painful points» of the Ukrainian cultural journalism, specifically those of the book journalism, have been outlined. Those are a lack of creative human resources, unwillingness/inability of journalists to communicate meaningfully and accessibly to a wide audience, as well as unpopularity of this type of journalism among media professionals. The specific criteria for assessing the professionalism of a book journalist are described, among them deep knowledge in the field of literature, book business, media; involvement in cultural processes, developed literary and art taste, rhetorical skills in popularizing special knowledge, ability to stable and regular work and so on. Prospects for the development of book journalism depend on the changing attitudes of society to culture, as well as a growth of popularity of book topics in non-mainstream media Keywords: сultural journalism, book media, book topic, literary criticism, book journalist.

Do journalism subjects invariably feel betrayed and misrepresented by journalists, as Janet Malcolm claims in her seminal 1990 book The Journalist and the Murderer? If not, what explains the ongoing appeal of her now famous conclusion? Based on interviews with 83 people who were named in newspapers in the New York City–area and a southwestern city, this article takes up these questions by putting journalism subjects’ own descriptions of their experiences with the journalistic process in dialogue with Malcolm’s central argument. I conclude that Malcolm’s conman–victim model for the journalist–subject relationship fails, in some key ways, to describe journalism subjects’ experiences; and yet, Malcolm does capture important emotional truths at the heart of the journalist–subject encounter. In the end, the hyperbolic versions of the journalist and subject she portrays may continue to resonate not because they are strictly accurate, but because they play a role in journalistic boundary work, simultaneously probing and reinforcing the boundaries of acceptable journalistic practice.

When Digital technology brought online journalism and new practices into newsrooms that made a huge impact on Indian newsrooms articles that lead to different perspective stories which gave a lot of space for creativity, this allowed every citizen to become online journalist that was a great milestone in digital evolution. But, when the news credibility in online journalism gradually fell, many journalist and publishers worried that admired principles of news reporting, experience and intuition might decline or even disappear. On the other hand, they fail to realise that this will empower journalists to use numbers to tell stories with fewer anecdotes, more reliability and to cover challenging invisible stories. Journalism has always involved numbers and data analysis was also a part of it. Then a new practice, “Data journalism” sparked in the newsroom that involves data to find a story and create visualizations which are not a very easy process in the newsroom. Howard (2014) in his study mentioned that 21st century was a change for mobile computing that lead to increases in online connectivity, access, speed and an explosion in data creation that completely changed the landscape for computer-assisted reporting. Another study by Parasie and Dagiral (2012) argued that data journalism comes into light because of hacker culture, initially, the hackers deal with the open-source and open government with some political values, which injects a new culture into the newsrooms. When we look at the national context there are many challenges to adapt in India newsrooms and confusion about its role and importance in the field of journalism. The major focus of this research is to find the complications faced by journalists while incorporating data into their news organization. According to Galtung’s articles ‘On the role of the media in worldwide security and peace’ (1986) and ‘High road, low road: Charting the course for peace journalism’ (1998), war journalism and peace journalism are two competing frames when reporting news on war and conflict. War journalists reactively report on conflict in a way that propagates violence, victory, and an elitist orientation. On the contrary, peace journalists proactively report on the causes of and solutions to a conflict, giving voice to all parties through responsible, empathetic journalism. By searching databases for multiple examples of qualitative and quantitative literature on peace and war journalism, new paths to best practices of how scholars articulate and measure the concepts of peace and war using content analysis methods can be found. This article reports on studies published in peer-reviewed journals that investigate the attributes of peace and war as they are conceptualized by scholars analyzing newspaper articles, television broadcasts, and radio reports within the context of peace journalism. Results suggest the majority of peace journalism studies examine media surrounding direct violence as it is occurring, and assess it most often by using the war/peace indicator of elite-oriented versus people-oriented.

The assault on the editor of a publication at a South African arts festival by an artist who disliked a review of his concert again highlighted an age-old rift between artists and critics. However, the response that this incident elicited among readers of this and other publications, showed surprising support for the artist rather than for the journalist. If this is read as an indication of a disillusionment among readers with regard to the standards of arts journalism in South Africa, the relationship between arts journalists and society should be re-examined. Ethical journalism rests upon a relationship between journalist and audience, and a sensitivity for the context in which journalism is practised. This article examines arts journalism within changing societal contexts, with a specific focus on the South African situation, where artistic production still bears witness to cultural and ethnic divisions of the past. Against the background of the changes that have occurred in society on a local and global level, it is argued that a re-evaluation of the roles and responsibilities of arts journalists is needed – especially in the light of the formation of new cultural identities after apartheid. In conclusion, an ongoing and indepth debate about the ethical responsibility of arts journalism is suggested in order to ensure its continued relevance within an increasingly commercialised cultural context on the one hand, and within a changing South African society on the other.

“Citizen journalism” is a term used to refer to ordinary individuals who act as journalists during some part of the process of creating content for mainstream journalism coverage. In China, besides ordinary citizen journalists, some professional journalists have been regarded as citizen journalists if they write stories online that would otherwise not be publishable in traditional media. Unfortunately, since the real name registration system was launched on the Internet in 2012, the activities of both professionals and average citizens in China are frequently limited. So, is citizen journalism a role that can only be practiced in very limited ways in China? This article adopts a broader definition of citizen journalism, in which, through the use of social media to discuss and comment on news and social issues, ordinary citizens in China act as collective citizen journalists, which insulates them against individually targeted criticism for their opinions. We applied agenda-setting theory to explain citizen journalist contributions to the content of traditional media and the policymaking process in China. Using several forms of Chinese media and rank-order cross-lagged correlations, we found that online public opinions in social media influenced the agenda of traditional commercially oriented media, but not the agenda of traditional government-sponsored media. The policy agenda was partially influenced by the online public. The online public acted collectively to influence and contribute to the content of the traditional media and policies the government considers, thus changing the nature of journalism and public sphere.

Journalism researchers have tended to study journalistic roles from within a Western framework oriented toward the media’s contribution to democracy and citizenship. In so doing, journalism scholarship often failed to account for the realities in non-democratic and non-Western contexts, as well as for forms of journalism beyond political news. Based on the framework of discursive institutionalism, we conceptualize journalistic roles as discursive constructions of journalism’s identity and place in society. These roles have sedimented in journalism’s institutional norms and practices and are subject to discursive (re)creation, (re)interpretation, appropriation, and contestation. We argue that journalists exercise important roles in two domains: political life and everyday life. For the domain of political life, we identify 18 roles addressing six essential needs of political life: informational-instructive, analytical-deliberative, critical-monitorial, advocative-radical, developmental-educative, and collaborative-facilitative. In the domain of everyday life, journalists carry out roles that map onto three areas: consumption, identity, and emotion.

While we have long acknowledged journalism’s place online, as digital-peripheral journalists interlopers face challenges when it comes to appreciating their work as news and their contributions as journalism. This article argues their contributions warrant further evaluation as the journalistic field continues to confront change and engage new approaches to journalism, and as interlopers continue to produce news. Using Deadspin’s coverage of the Sinclair Broadcast Group as an exemplar of such contributions, this article details an approach which accounts for interlopers’ unique approaches to news, locating in broader news discourse measures of “journalistic realization” as a legitimating discourse. Its findings tentatively suggest a weakening of historically hardened boundaries between journalism’s core and its periphery, and argue for continued, nuanced exploration of the nature of the journalistic field.

The development of information technology and the internet has significantly transformed the landscape of media and journalism. Traditional journalism, which relied on print and electronic broadcasting, has evolved into digital journalism supported by online platforms. This change has had a profound impact on the professionalism and credibility of journalists. This research aims to analyze the paradigm shift from traditional journalism to digital journalism and explore its impact on journalistic professionalism and credibility. The methods used in this study are literature review and comparative analysis. In the literature review, we examine the relevant literature on the paradigm shift in journalism and its impact on journalistic professionalism and credibility. Comparative analysis is carried out by comparing the characteristics of traditional journalism and digital journalism and analyzing the changes that have occurred. The results of the study indicate that the paradigm shift from traditional journalism to digital journalism has changed the role of journalists in gathering, editing and delivering news. Digital journalism provides greater freedom and flexibility for journalists in creating content, but it also brings new challenges related to the validity and credibility of information. Journalists today are faced with demands to adapt to new technologies, master algorithms, and build a strong online presence. On completion of his studies in Modern History at Keble College, Oxford University (1967-70), he started a career in journalism, first as sub editor at the Nottingham Guardian Journal/Evening Post (1970-73) and then at the Cambridge Evening News (1973-77). They include Ethics for Journalists and The Newspapers Handbook,2 respectively on their second and fifth editions, as well as several volumes on George Orwell, investigative journalism, and the British media. It was an honour and privilege to talk to Prof. Keeble in a phone interview on March 25, 2021. The conversation was transcribed while some passages were edited for clarity. I hereby express my immense gratitude for his time, generosity, expertise, and humour. It is such a thrill to start our series of interviews in a way that only makes us want more such conversations.

Citizen journalism in television in Indonesia has flourished in the past decade, with two national commercial companies broadcasting citizen programme on occasion and three stations engaging in ongoing citizen journalism initiatives. This article uses a case study of Indonesia’s NET Citizen Journalist (NET CJ) programme to study perspectives of citizen journalists about the impact of citizen journalism in television on themselves and their society. Surveys and interviews with active CJ members indicated that collaboration between citizen journalists and television networks democratizes information by allowing a wider range of people to share information and perspectives, and drives positive changes in citizen’s surroundings and self-development in terms of knowledge and skills in news video production. However, potential negative side-effects are the high risk of being sued by injured parties and dissatisfaction about limited opportunities to have community videos broadcast on television.

Integration and efforts to include women journalists are increasing as a result of advocating for a more inclusive media, including in sports desk. However sports journalist broadcasters are limited, as seen from the way women athletes are covered at various levels, the representation of athletes who get the spotlight as well as the focus on sports industry issues that get coverage priority. This literature review uses the scoping literature review method - a literature discussion on women sports journalists - and Bourdieu's framework to understand sports journalism as doxa and its influence on women journalists and other women workers in sports journalism. Experiences and decision making of women journalists were analyzed with the perspective of Gender Psychology based on previous researches from Journalism, Communication, Sports and Media Studies. The literature analysis resulted in a mapping of the various issues faced by women sports journalists, as well as describing the dynamics and identity negotiations that were experienced. The existence of women sports journalists influences the way sports desk works, the issues and focus of their work, their writing styles, and their strategies in the workplace and sports media as institutions. Women sports journalists create a space to work through their daily lives.

Journalists and Confidential Sources: Colliding Public Interests in the Age of the Leak, by Joseph M Fernandez. Routledge Research on Journalism Series. Abingdon, UK: Routledge, 2021. 287 pages. ISBN 9780367474126 IN 2015, media law professor Joseph M. Fernandez co-authored a comprehensive article for Pacific Journalism Review (Fernandez & Pearson, 2015) about the status of Australia’s shield law regime, drawing on his research to see whether it met journalists’ expectations and whistleblower needs in an era of unprecedented official capabilities. It didn’t, as can be seen from growing concerns over court cases that, according to the peak journalists’ organisation Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA), ‘clearly demonstrate Australia’s patchy and desperate journalist shields fail to do their job’.
