London has been the home of the journal throughout its existence and, as the world's leading scholarly journal on modern China, The China Quarterly has long been a distinguishing feature of British sinology. Since its inception The China Quarterly has been recognized world-wide as the journal of record on 20th-century Chinese affairs, publishing timely, reflective, informed and new research on a wide range of subjects. The journal's Quarterly Chronicle and Documentation (so ably compiled by Robert F. Ash since 1982) is a venerable history of all but the first decade of the People's Republic. The extensive list of books received and books reviewed (195 in 1994) are also histories of the China field in themselves.

This study investigated how keeping a journal related to issues and concepts in science influences sixth grade students’ affective characteristics, including cognition, interest, and attitude towards science. The development of these characteristics is related to students’ attitudes and interests in learning. Previous studies have primarily focused on the affective characteristics of gifted students, while only a few have focused on elementary students in public schools. We asked 34 grade six students in Korean public schools to keep a journal related to science and technology three times a week for 12 weeks (September–November 2018). The results show students’ perspectives on writing science journals from data, including questionnaires, interviews, and surveys. The results also suggest that keeping a science journal develops students’ affective characteristics related to science. Our findings will contribute to the development of better pedagogies for sustainability and resources for teaching science among elementary students.

The present study aims to investigate the effect of English learning journal on strategy building. Learning strategiesare proved and claimed by many researchers that it has a close association with good language learners. However,there is little research on building learning strategies through keeping a weekly journal. The participants, in the study,were 33 EFL Taiwan college students, taking English for Socializing as an optional course for one semester. Duringthe semester, they were required to keep a weekly learning journal related to their English learning (in-class and afterclass) and to send it to the instructor-researcher via the Moodle. The Moodle, in the study, serves as the function ofdiaries, providing an instant and convenient way of sending and saving information. The study’s instrument,Oxford’s Strategy Inventory of Language Learning (SILL), is applied to examine whether or not there is anysignificant difference of the learners’ strategy use before and after the study. For the purpose of finding out whetheror not there are significant differences in the numbers of employing language learning strategies, a series ofquantitative tests are carried out. Besides the quantitative results of SILL, a semi-structured post-interview is alsoadministered to unfold more about the English learning journal and strategy use from the perspectives of the learners.The findings of the study could shed light on language learning, especially on strategy building.

Keeping into consideration importance of citation analysis as a method of journal evaluation criteria study is initiated to highlight impact of journals which were removed by UGC presuming that journals are receiving citation attention as they are published by reputed publishers. The study aims to raise the awareness of increasing prevalence of citations to the journal articles considered as low quality by UGC. It demonstrated that many articles from the removed journals are deeply interwoven in the scientific literature and are cited by authors which later on publish in reputed publication outlet. Thus, the decision considering journal as low quality is not sufficient rather a proper mechanism should framed regarding citing low quality literature. Furthermore, declaring a journal as low quality or removing it from a country listing of white journals cannot change the entire landscape of scientific communication unless a collective effort at international level is initiated to curb the problem of low quality research and duplicated efforts.

This paper estimated marginal effects on dependent variable against independent variables on the management of procurement records in the Tanzania procuring entities (PEs). The study was a survey of selected PEs. Data were collected through structured questionnaires. Sample was arbitrarily set at 200 PEs whereby questionnaires were randomly administered to 200 respondents within 200 PEs found in Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Morogoro, Pwani, and Tanga. At the end of questionnaires administration the response rates were 83.1% PEs and 75% respondents respectively. Based on the results and findings, marginal effects were identified, established and estimated. The study was concluded that: PEs having no equipment and facilities for keeping records are 2.7% less likely to have proper management of procurement records, PEs with limited equipment and facilities for keeping records are 4.1% less likely to have proper management of procurement records, and PEs with no security and safety measures in managing records are 1.4% less likely to have proper management of procurement records, ceteris paribus. On the contrary, procurement records managed by personnel who are knowledgeable and skilled are 1.3% more likely to be properly managed, procurement records that are managed by competent personnel and who have the on-the-job training on records management are 1.0% more likely to be properly managed, PEs with available storage space for keeping records, improves management of procurement records by 4.8%, PEs with adequate storage space for keeping all kinds of procurement records, improves management of procurement records by 6.5%, and PEs that have sufficient security and safety measures in managing procurement records, improves management of procurement records by 4.3% ceteris paribus.

As a senior (read older) practising respirologist, I have come to appreciate my position as editor, which keeps me current with present practice standards. Everyone talks about the volume and flow of new knowledge, and not a week goes by in which I feel that I know enough to treat my patients optimally. This is particularly the case when it comes to antibiotic usage: the number of antibiotics and the confident way that junior colleagues bandy them about leaves me distinctly depressed because most of the names mean little to me; even the families and generations of antibiotics seem beyond my grasp. That is why I welcomed the request from Dr Lionel Mandell to publish a summary statement on the use of antibiotics in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), which appears on pages 371-382 of the current issue of theCanadian Respiratory Journal.

These contributions are not always in keeping with the harsh requirements of the impact factor, but we judge that this makes for a better all-round journal that advances psychiatry in all its manifold aspects and is anything but dull.

The field of nuclear receptor and coregulator signaling has grown into one of the most active and interdisciplinary in eukaryotic biology. Papers in this field are spread widely across a vast number of journals, which complicates the task of investigators in keeping current with the literature in the field. In 2003, we launched Nuclear Receptor Signaling as an Open Access reviews, perspectives and methods journal for the nuclear receptor signaling field. Building on its success and impact on the community, we have added primary research and dataset articles to this list of article categories, and we now announce the re-launch of the journal this month. Here we will summarize the rationale that informed the creation and expansion of the journal, and discuss the possibilities for its future development.

The current study explored whether critical thinking skills can be cultivated among Iranian EFL learners through keeping dialogue journals written through paper-and-pen (traditional) and through email (modern). Moreover, the study compared Traditional Dialogue Journal Writing with Modern Dialogue Journal Writing to see which one has probably a greater potentiality for improving critical thinking in an ELT context. To this end, it adopted a quantitative design and selected 85 participants non-randomly from among intermediate EFL learners in Iran. To collect the data, a Preliminary English Test as a homogeneity test and Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal Form were utilized. Statistical analysis of the finding revealed that dialogue journaling, both traditional and modern, was a fruitful experience for developing critical thinking. Moreover, contrary to the researchers' assumption, traditional Dialogue journal proved to have a greater potentiality for the development of critical thinking. The study provides implications for ELT contexts.

This study examines the extent to which information sharing, records keeping and partner relations influence firm performance via the creation of an efficient procurement system. A survey of 142 firms in the Ashanti region of Ghana, selected using the convenience sampling technique is used in the study. The study adopted a quantitative approach, with a structured questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. An examination of the relationship among the variables reveal that procurement efficiency partially mediates the relationship between each of the three procurement related practices and firm performance. The implication of these findings for practice is that a focus on collaboration, not competition must be the aim of procurement. In modern times, firms must move beyond adversarial relations and focus on creative collaborative, long term relationship with selected suppliers. The study proposes that records keeping and audit of the process must be accorded as much importance as tender evaluation and contract management. The findings further imply that Suppliers are an extension of the focal firm and must be viewed as such. Excessive use of power leaves the weaker party aggrieved and willing to resort to unethical practices, which may include supply of low quality materials or creation of artificial shortages.

Although keeping some type of journal is a common requirement in many education courses, little research has been conducted on how journals are actually used to promote student learning. This study investigated the use of dialogue journals as a tool for promoting the learning of prospective teachers in a multicultural teacher education course. In this article I define dialogue journals and briefly discuss the events leading to my decision to introduce them into a course on diversity. Next, I provide a rationale for the use of dialogue journals. I then explain how I used dialogue journals as a tool for promoting student learning in the course. Finally, I discuss limitations of this study and present implications for future research.

Children Australia is a friendly journal. It is accessible, readable, contemporary, and straight forward. It has always been intended as a forum for practitioners and external commentators alike. The editorial policy has been relatively relaxed, with assistance provided to ensure a good spread of contributors. A quick scan of papers published over the last four years shows a predominance of papers from academics, primarily within schools of social work. These are enriched by contributions from writers from community development, youth services, child development, psychology, policy studies and history, often giving an extra critical slant or a sharp specialist focus that might otherwise be conspicuously missing. Personally, I really appreciate this interdisciplinary conversation and hope it will be preserved and developed.

As a general medical journal, The BMJ contains a wide range of subject matter, and many types of information need to be incorporated in its semi-annual index. Index Medicus vocabulary can be used for clinical articles, but non-clinical matter presents problems of ‘soft’ language. A weekly publication, the BMJ runs to about 1600 pages a volume, so succinct indexing is important, as is keeping to schedule. The number of authors and the vagueness of journal users present particular problems that can be ameliorated by the design of the index. Medline is a useful adjunct for subject access. Both the journal and the index have changed during a decade in which social and political aspects of medicine have assumed greater importance.

Our journal in 2019 celebrates a double anniversary: the publication of 50th volume and the centenary of the beginning of its predecessor — the series “Notulae systematicae ex Herbario Horti botanici Petrololitani” (= “Botanicheskiye materialy Gerbariya Glavnogo Botanicheskogo Sada RSFSR”). “Notulae systematicae…” was founded in 1919 and was published (intermittently) until 1963. Outstanding Russian botanists B. A. Fedtschenko, V. L. Komarov, B. K. Schischkin were its editors. 22 volumes containing 756 articles and notes (plus reference volume) were published. “Novitates systematicae plantarum vascularium” (= “Novosti sistematiki vysshikh rastenii”) became a natural continuation of the “Notulae systematicae…”, the series was edited by I. A. Linczevsky, V. I. Grubov, T. V. Egorova, N. N. Tzvelev. Nowadays, the editorial board seeks to find the place of the journal in the Russian and world system of botanical periodicals, to ensure its inclusion in authoritative international citation systems. Keeping traditions, we strive to more correspond to the modern style of international publications on the vascular plants taxonomy.

Students enrolled in Social Psychology kept application journals, in which they applied course concepts to their daily social experiences. A content analysis of the entries revealed evidence of the acquisition of 12 possible farms of self-knowledge, defined by applying each of 4 cognitive operations (labeling, explaining, educing consequences, and self-assessing) to each of 3 different aspects of the self (thoughts, feelings, and actions). This analysis provides instructors with a framework for assessing various dimensions of an important component of student psychosocial development: understanding the self.

This study aims to test whether using the technique named keeping-journals during the TOEFL preparation class is beneficial for the listening section part A of the test. The quantitative pretest-posttest method used in this study involves single-group design consisting of 36 fifth semester college students at Syiah Kuala University, Aceh, Indonesia. The result is considered essential since, practically, TOEFL tutors need to bring TOEFL learners to keep track on their learning rate on their own; hopefully, the result can best suit the theoretical gap since there have been only few experimental studies conducted on Listening Section of TOEFL through journal-keeping. The findings approved that the Ha is accepted for the tvalue is 1.90 (df 34, α=0.05, -2.02 ≤ t ≥ 2.02 ). It is also significant for the sigvalue is 0.7 (sigvalue ≥ α=0.05). In conclusion, the technique does help the learners in tackling problems they face in Listening section on TOEFL part A as it enhances their listening performance, attitude, and motivation.

Vocabulary learning is one of the most difficult components of foreign language education. Therefore, students are in need of some strategies to cope with it and keeping vocabulary journals is one of these particular strategies. This study examined the vocabulary journals kept by the preparatory school students of a private university to determine the effects of them on learner success and learner autonomy as well as the attitudes of students and instructors towards them. A mixed method approach in which qualitative data was supported by quantitative data was applied to totally 346 participants. The findings of the study provide relevant information and insight for the instructors and administrators who aim to enhance vocabulary learning and plan to implement vocabulary journals into their own educational systems. We trace the origins and development of the management learning movement that has come to be closely associated with the journal Management Learning and explain how ideas that shaped the creation of business schools influenced the inception of this field. We then examine themes and trends that have been prevalent in the field in the second half of the journal’s 50-year history, through an analysis of its coverage over a 24-year period from 1994 to 2018. During this time, there has been a marked shift away from an applied focus on manager and management development towards a more theoretical perspective of the field, in keeping with trends in academic journals more generally. We focus on the journal’s contribution to the scholarship of management and organisational learning through an analysis of both strong and weak themes and its most cited papers. Finally, we propose ways in which our analysis of the past might offer new ways of thinking about our scholarship and we propose a future direction for the field and the journal that connects to the original intentions to shape organisational practice in order to address broader issues of social and economic exchange.

Abstract: Introduction: After getting indexed by scientific databases – Web of Science, Journal Citation Reports – the obtained scientific performance of the journal needs to be kept up. Aim: The aim of this article is to analyse citation numbers based on different bibliometric indicators between 2012 and 2016 comparing data with an article published in 2012. Method: Authors evaluated issues of Orvosi Hetilap published in 2013–2015 and searched data in various international databases. Number of citations, quality of citing journals were analysed based on the official 2015–2016 impact factor of Orvosi Hetilap. Scientific performance of the journal was evaluated according to data of SCImago webpage and Scopus database as well. Results: The official 2016 impact factor of Orvosi Hetilap is 0,349 which is the highest value compared with the previous factors. The articles of Orvosi Hetilap are cited by international authors and high impact factor journals, too. Further, more than half of the publications cited are open access. The most frequently cited categories are original and review articles, and case reports. Scientific performance of Orvosi Hetilap is promising according to indicators of SCImago webpage and Scopus database. Mean self-citation rate of the journal is about 30%. Its h-index is 7 in Web of Science Core Collection, and 19 in Scopus database. Conclusions: Citation analysis of this article shows that citation numbers and various bibliometric indicators can increase in a short period, but drastic changes can only happen in a long period with keeping and pushing the obtained values, and focusing on the further development of the journal. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the use patterns of scholarly e-journals by academics for teaching, research and keeping themselves up-to-date. The study also looks at differences in the use patterns across 12 disciplines. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted to explore academics’ use patterns of scholarly e-journals in 12 disciplines. The University of the Punjab was used for the sample population. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all regular and contractual academics of Lahore campuses of the University. After follow up, 457 questionnaires were received with a response rate of 54 per cent. Descriptive statistics and non-parametric statistics were used to analyse data. Findings The results showed that the academics made more frequent use of e-journals, online reference sources and discussion with colleagues for scholarly activities. E-journals were used predominantly for research-related activities rather than for teaching and instruction. Academics obtained e-journal articles primarily from open access sources, i.e. general search engines and Google Scholar as compared to subscribed and other sources of e-journal articles. Disciplinary differences were also found in academics’ use patterns of e-journals. However, academics showed just satisfactory skills regarding use of advanced searching techniques and evaluation of the quality of e-journals. Practical implications Findings will be helpful for information professionals to review their policies and practices in relation to e-journal services for academic community. The needs for e-literacy skills to use e-journals will also be identified and findings will be significant for information professionals in arranging information literacy instruction programmes for targeted disciplines. Originality/value Most of e-journals use studies focused on specific disciplines – Sciences, Life Sciences, Engineering and Technology and Social Sciences. This research study is valuable that investigated use patterns of e-journals across 12 different disciplines at the University of the Punjab.
