Streszczenie:
Article 25 on individual criminal responsibility has generated more conflicting interpretations than any other provision in the Rome Statute. Part of the problem is that it is impossible to construct a coherent and nonredundant interpretation of Article 25(3)(d) on group complicity. Because of unfortunate drafting, both the required contribution and the required mental element are impossible to discern from the inscrutable language. As a result, it is nearly impossible to devise a holistic interpretation of Article 25(3)(d) that fits together with the rest of Article 25 and Article 30 on mental elements. One possible solution is to repair Article 25 with an amendment that replaces Article 25(3)(d) with a clear provision specifically incorporating some joint liability doctrine, albeit a version that excludes the worst excesses of the doctrine known as joint criminal enterprise.

Abstract The joint interpretation mechanism is gaining increasing attention in the recent practice and study of international investment law. In the past, the NAFTA Free Trade Commission exercised this interpretative authority by issuing the controversial Notes of Interpretation which limit the scope of fair and equitable treatment (FET) to customary international law. While much has been debated about the legitimacy of the Notes in the context of NAFTA arbitration, this article examines its influence on tribunals not bound by it (i.e. non-NAFTA tribunals). An extensive review of cases shows that non-NAFTA tribunals are generally cautious about directly applying the Notes to their own interpretation, while some followed NAFTA precedents shaped by the Notes. Considering the possible proliferation of the joint interpretation mechanism in the future, this article further examines the role of third states’ joint interpretations in treaty interpretation through the lens of Articles 31 and 32 of the VCLT.

This article deals with problems of interpretation of political discourse in joint press conference. Novelty of research is identified by the lack of domestic publications in the field of Translation studies on press conferences in the context of Kazakhstan’s foreign policy. Article examines characteristic features of consecutive interpretation of political media discourse. The need of effective strategies that help to provide adequate interpretation is identified and justified. On the basis of the study the authors suggest that backgroundknowledge on communicative situation enables interpreter to solve tasks caused by time deficiency and different semantic structures. It is proved that use of compression, decompression and re-ordering string in consecutive interpretation is key to reach communicative equivalence in target text. Results show that juxtaposition of strategies in one discursive segment illustrates that inherent cognitive feature of interpretation process. Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely regarded as the gold standard for diagnosing internal derangement; however, its accuracy in detecting disc perforations varies. Objectives: 1) identify MRI features correlating with disc perforation, 2) identify preoperative variables correlating with disc perforation, and 3) develop a predictive model to ascertain the presence of disc perforation. Materials and Methods This cohort study involved 92 patients who underwent arthroscopic surgery to identify associated variables. Arthroscopically verified disc perforation was considered the primary predictor variable, while MRI interpretation of disc perforation served as the primary outcome variable. Demographic data, patient signs, and symptoms were treated as covariates. Statistical analyses were conducted at a significance level of 5%. Logistic regression models were employed to predict disc perforation, and diagnostic accuracy was assessed using ROC curves. Results Among the 155 joints analyzed (92 patients: 135 females, 20 males), MRI interpretations did not significantly correlate with verified disc perforation (p < 0.218), demonstrating 14.3% sensitivity and 92.5% specificity. Age, symptomatic onset, joint noise type, osteoarthritis diagnosis, altered disc shape, and Wilkes classification exhibited significant associations (p < 0.05). A logistic regression model utilized associated variables for predicting disc perforation. Risk factors included symptom onset time, joint crepitus, osteoarthrosis diagnosis by MRI; joint click was considered protective. Conclusion The model demonstrated high diagnostic accuracy (AUC of 0.836, 95% CI 0.76–0.91). While MRI interpretation was unreliable, our model accurately predicted disc perforation. Identification of these factors could inform surgical decisions

An inverse dynamic analysis and subsequent calculation of joint kinetic and energetic measures is widely used to study the mechanics of the lower extremity. Filtering the kinematic and kinetic data input to the inverse dynamics equations affects the calculated joint moment of force (JMF). Our purpose was to compare selected integral values of sagittal plane ankle, knee, and hip joint kinetics and energetics when filtered and unfiltered GRF data are input to inverse dynamics calculations. Six healthy, active, injury-free university student (5 female, 1 male) volunteers performed 10 two-legged landings. JMFs were calculated after two methods of data filtering. Unfiltered: marker data were filtered at 10 Hz, GRF data unfiltered. Filtered: both GRF and marker data filtered at 10 Hz. The filtering of the GRF data affected the shape of the knee and hip joint moment-time curves, and the ankle, knee and hip joint mechanical power-time curves. We concluded that although the contributions of individual joints to the support moment and to total energy absorption were not affected, the attenuation of high-frequency oscillations in both JMF and JMP time curves will influence interpretation of CNS strategies during landing.

Evaluating and exploiting unconventional complex oil and gas reservoirs such as the Marcellus Shale gas reservoirs within the Appalachian Basin in Pennsylvania, USA, have gained considerable interest in recent years. Technologies such as conventional 3D seismic, horizontal drilling, and hydraulic fracturing have been at the forefront of the effort to exploit these resources. Recently, multicomponent seismic technologies have been integrated into some resource evaluation and reservoir characterization activities of low-permeability rock systems. We evaluated how multicomponent seismic technology provides value to reservoir characterization in shale gas exploration. We improved fault interpretations and natural fracture identifications by means of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] integrated interpretation. In addition, using P-P-/P-SV-joint inversion, we extracted key parameters, such as [Formula: see text] ratio and density, that improve stratigraphic interpretation and rock-property descriptions of shale gas reservoirs.

Abstract Objective To ascertain effects of x-ray beam centering and limb position on apparent congruity of a normal cubital joint (elbow). Animals 6 skeletally mature male Treeing Walker Coonhounds without physical, radiographic, or gross evidence of elbow abnormalities. Procedure Relative movement among humerus, radius, and ulna and measured joint space width on mediolateral and craniocaudal radiographic views was compared, using various x-ray beam centering and limb positions. Results Highest agreement and greatest certainty on subjective determination of congruity was for the flexed 90° mediolateral radiographic view with the x-ray beam centered on the elbow. Distortion artifact of the proximal ulnar measurements was significant when the x-ray beam was centered on the midpoint of the radius. On the mediolateral view, the humeroradial joint space became significantly wide when the elbow was flexed. On the craniocaudal view, maximal humeroradial joint space width was obtained when the x-ray beam bisected the angle of the joint or was angled +30° toward the humerus. Conclusions Artifact distortion of joint width affected objective and subjective assessment of elbow congruity when the limb was placed in extreme flexion or extension or when the x-ray beam was not centered over the area of interest. Optimal visualization of the humeroradial joint space on the craniocaudal view was achieved when the x-ray beam bisected the angle of the elbow or was slightly angled toward the humerus. Clinical Relevance Elbow congruity was best assessed on the flexed 90° lateral radiographic view with the x-ray beam centered on the joint. (Am J Vet Res 1998;59:1351–1357)

Failure of joints can lead to structural collapse. It is vital to monitor joint stiffness during operation to prevent such failures. This paper proposes a novel method for the quality assessment of structural joints using coaxial correlation in 6D space. Coaxially placed 6D sensors on either side of the joint implemented by 3D accelerometers and 3D gyroscopes with wide frequency range, automatic synchronisation between the input signal and receivers and response signal averaging are presented. The root mean square (RMS) value from the obtained signals convolution is proposed as a measure of the similarity between two signals for monitoring joint degradation. The method’s effectiveness was tested on steel beam splice connection, where it was found that the RMS of convolution signals in 6D space showed a direct correlation between the calculated RMS value in X, Y, GX, and GY axes directions and the stiffness grades of the joint. The paper concludes that the nature of the RMS during the degradation of the joint may change in different axes, and wrongly chosen axes may lead to wrong conclusions regarding the state of the investigated joint, especially in the case of complex joints, so that the measurements in 6D provide higher reliability of the result interpretation.

The objective of this study was to use high-resolution cone-beam computed images (hr- CBCT) to diagnose degenerative joint disease in asymptomatic and symptomatic subjects using the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders DC/TMD imaging criteria. This observational study comprised of 92 subjects age-sex matched and divided into two groups: clinical degenerative joint disease (c-DJD, n = 46) and asymptomatic control group (n = 46). Clinical assessment of the DJD and high-resolution CBCT images (isotropic voxel size of 0.08mm) of the temporomandibular joints were performed for each participant. An American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology certified radiologist and a maxillofacial radiologist used the DC/TMD imaging criteria to evaluate the radiographic findings, followed by a consensus of the radiographic evaluation. The two radiologists presented a high agreement (Cohen’s Kappa ranging from 0.80 to 0.87) for all radiographic findings (osteophyte, erosion, cysts, flattening, and sclerosis). Five patients from the c- DJD group did not present radiographic findings, being then classified as arthralgia. In the asymptomatic control group, 82.6% of the patients presented radiographic findings determinant of DJD and were then classified as osteoarthrosis or overdiagnosis. In conclusion, our results showed a high number of radiographic findings in the asymptomatic control group, and for this reason, we suggest that there is a need for additional imaging criteria to classify DJD properly in hr-CBCT images.

Quantitatively assessing fluid saturation in reservoir rocks has been the ultimate goal of hydrocarbon geophysical investigations. Joint interpretation of acoustic and electromagnetic survey data indicates a promise to improve the fluid quantification ability. However, the saturation effects on the cross-property relationship between the elastic and electrical rock properties (i.e., the joint elastic-electrical properties) that form the key to the successful joint interpretation remain poorly understood. We have developed an effective medium modeling scheme for the joint elastic-electrical properties of sandstones with partial water saturation and studied theoretically the effects of porosity and grain and pore geometries on the saturation-dependent joint elastic-electrical properties of sandstones. Comparison between the modeling results and an available laboratory data set confirms the applicability of the approach for modeling the joint elastic-electrical properties of partially saturated sandstones. P-wave velocity is found to decrease with increasing electrical conductivity as water saturation increases in rocks with low porosity, low grain aspect ratio, and high pore aspect ratio. The water saturation effects on the joint properties are amplified in rocks with higher porosity, greater grain aspect ratio, and lower pore aspect ratio, in which P-wave velocity indicates an asymmetric V-shaped relationship with electrical conductivity as an implicit function of increasing water saturation. It also is found that the increasing porosity affects the joint properties in a gradually increasing manner, whereas the increasing grain and pore aspect ratios impose a decreasing impact on the joint elastic-electrical correlations. The results have strengthened our understanding of the joint elastic-electrical properties of partially saturated sandstones and will facilitate the joint interpretation of acoustic and electromagnetic survey data for improved fluid quantification.

We recently introduced new petrophysical and compositional methods for joint interpretation of multiple conventional well logs. These inversion-based methods are suited for petrophysical interpretation of rock formations that exhibit complex solid composition, include thin beds, and are subject to mud-filtrate invasion. They combine nuclear and resistivity logs to assess porosity and volumetric/weight concentrations of mineral and fluid constituents, and are ideal for the quantitative interpretation of carbonate formations. We document the successful application of the newly introduced inversion-based interpretation methods to three carbonate formations. Interpretation results are compared to those obtained with commercial software and core/X-ray diffraction (XRD) data whenever available. For two of the carbonate field examples where XRD data are available, nonlinear joint inversion of well logs improves the assessment of porosity by more than 30% and up to 100% in the presence of thin beds when compared to conventional interpretation methods.

Streszczenie:
BackgroundJuvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) often has a relapsing/remitting disease course, but it is not known whether recurrence of inflammation tends to be local.ObjectivesTo assess whether JIA joint inflammation recurs locally in the same joints.MethodsJoints of 91 patients of the BeSt for Kids study, a treat-to-target trial for children with recent-onset oligoarticular (n=11), rheumatoid factor negative polyarticular (n=72) and juvenile psoriatic JIA (n=8), were clinically assessed during two years (10 study visits). The association between joint inflammation at baseline and later inflammation in the same joint was assessed using a multilevel mixed-effects logistic regression model at joint level, adjusted for joint location and time point. With a Poisson model, the association between baseline joint inflammation and the number of study visits at which the same joint was recurrently inflamed (after inactivity of the joint) was tested. To assess whether an association between baseline and later clinical joint inflammation was a specific within-joint association, a permutation test was performed. A statistically significant result (p<0.05) indicates that the association between baseline and later joint inflammation is stronger in the observed data than in permutations with comparisons across random joints, suggesting an effect at joint level. To assess whether joint inflammation (ever during follow-up) was associated with radiographic damage (Poznanski Z-score) in the same (wrist) joint, a generalized linear mixed model was used.ResultsOf the 6,097 joints studied, 15% (897) was clinically inflamed at baseline. In 42% (377/897) of those joints, inflammation recurred during follow-up. Joint inflammation at baseline and recurrence of inflammation during follow-up within the three included JIA categories is depicted in Figure 1. Of the joints that became inflamed after the patient had a period of inactive disease, 93% (1,195/1,280) had been previously inflamed. Joint inflammation at baseline was statistically significantly associated with joint inflammation in the same joint during follow-up (OR 3.9, 95% CI 3.5 to 4.4). The association was found in all included JIA categories, although to a different extent (Table 1). Baseline inflammation of a joint was also positively associated with the number of episodes of recurrent joint inflammation in that same joint (IRR 1.6, 95% CI 1.2 to 2.1). The permutation test showed that inflammation during follow-up in a certain joint was better predicted by baseline inflammation of the same joint, than by baseline inflammation of randomly selected other joints (p<0.001), confirming a local effect. No statistically significant association was found between joint inflammation in the wrist and local radiographic damage (β 0.17, 95% CI -0.06 to 0.41).Figure 1.Joint inflammation patterns (joint activity at baseline and local recurrence of joint activity following baseline joint activity) in the three JIA types (oligoarticular, n=11; RF negative polyarticular, n=65, psoriatic, n=25) included in the BeSt for Kids study.MCP: metacarpophalangeal, PIP: proximal interphalangeal, DIP: distal interphalangeal, MTP: metatarsophalangealConclusionIn JIA, joint inflammation has the tendency to recur multiple times in joints that are clinically inflamed at disease onset. This indicates that local factors might play a role in the processes contributing to JIA flares. These local factors might be a target for new therapies.REFERENCES:NIL.Acknowledgements:NIL.Disclosure of InterestsSascha L Heckert: None declared, Petra C E Hissink Muller Grant/research support from: The original BeSt for Kids study received financial support from Pfizer. Streszczenie:
AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to present a paradigm, or guide, to the analysis of preloaded bolted joints made using multiple bolts. Classical analysis methods are applied to the interaction of the joint elements subjected to combinations of both in-plane and out-of-plane loads and moments. The distribution of the external loads and moments within the preloaded joint is determined in relationship to individual bolts. An analysis of loads and stresses in individual bolts and dowels along with flange bending and thread shear in tapped or threaded holes is developed. The article brings together a number of concepts and links them into a practical design analysis process that is applicable for many cases of preloaded bolted joints and are adequate to demonstrate the structural integrity of each element of the joint. Interpretation of results, within the context of design standards, is provided. In some cases finite element methods may be more appropriate, and the methods discussed can be used in the validation process.

The responsibility of the Coordinating Committee in the management of wildlife, including caribou, in northern Quebec is self-evident. Since its establishment in 1975 the committee has attempted to fulfil this responsibility. Initially the committee was hampered in its efforts largely due to a different interpretation of this responsibility among the parties. However, a three stage process for reviewing and discussing management initiatives has evolved over the years which has been shown to be effective. Through trial and error over the years, the committee has come to fulfil its intended role - that of "coordinating" wildlife management in northern Quebec in conjunction with the responsible governments.

The ultimate goal of this study is to develop autonomous mobile home healthcare robots which closely monitor and evaluate the patients' motor function, and their at-home training therapy process, providing automatically calling for medical personnel in emergency situations. The robots to be developed will bring about cost-effective, safe and easier at-home rehabilitation to most motor-function impaired patients (MIPs), and meanwhile, relieve therapists from great burden in canonical rehabilitation. In order to achieve this goal, we have developed the following programs/algorithms for monitoring human activities and recognizing human behaviors: (1) control programs for a mobile robot to track and follow a human subject by three different viewpoints; (2) algorithms for analyzing lower limb joint angles from RGB-D images from a Kinect sensor setup at a mobile robot; and (3) algorithms for recognizing human gait behavior. In (1), side viewpoint, front/back viewpoint and a middle angle viewpoint (between two former viewpoints) tracking were developed. In (2), depth image compensation with colored markers was implemented to deal with the skeleton point extraction error caused by mixing-up and frame flying of depth image during tracking and following human subjects by the mobile robot. In (3), we have proposed a hidden Markov model (HMM) based human behavior recognition using lower limb joint angles and trunk angle. Experimental results showed that joint trajectory could be measured and analyzed with high accuracy compared to a motion tracking system, and human behavior could be recognized from the joint trajectory.

Glass Fibre Reinforcement Polymer (GFRP) reinforcements are currently used as internal reinforcements for all flexural members due to their resistance to corrosion, high strength to weight ratios, the ability to handle easily and better fatigue performance under repeated loading conditions. Further, these GFRP reinforcements prove to be the better alternative to conventional reinforcements. The design methodology for flexural components has already come in the form of codal specifications. But the design code has not been specified for beam-column joints reinforced internally with GFRP reinforcements. The present study is aimed to assess the behaviour of exterior beam-column joint reinforced internally with GFRP reinforcements numerically using the ABAQUS software for different properties of materials, loading and support conditions. The mechanical properties of these reinforcements are well documented and are utilized for modelling analysis. Although plenty of literature is available for predicting the joint shear strength of beam-column joints reinforced with conventional reinforcements numerically, but no such study is carried for GFRP reinforced beam-columns joints. As an attempt, modelling of beam-column joint with steel and with GFRP rebars is carried out using ABAQUS software. The behaviour of joints under monotonically increasing static and cyclic load conditions. Interpretation of all analytical findings with results obtained from experiments. The analysis and design of beam-column joints reinforced with GFRP reinforcements are carried out by strut and tie model. Strut and Tie models are based on the models for the steel reinforced beam-column joints. The resulting strut and tie model developed for the GFRP reinforced beam-column joints predicts joint shear strength. Joint shear strength values obtained from the experiments are compared with the analytical results for both the beam-column joints reinforced with steel and GFRP reinforcements. The joint shear strength predicted by the analytical tool ABAQUS is also validated with experimental results.

At the present time, a lot of problems in a sphere of fundamental sciences as well as technical and applied tasks can be solved only with the use of satellite images, since their usage reduces material, financial and time costs significantly in comparison with traditional methods. One of the modern integrated approach remote sensing processing is to join the measurements obtained from the various sources, such as optical and radar sensors, allowing to achieve a gain in comparison with independent processing due to the extension of the information volume and the opportunities of data acquisition (weather conditions, spectral ranges, etc.). However, methods of digital processing and interpretation of radar data, as well as qualitative and proven methods and algorithms for joint processing of optical and radar satellite images, has not sufficiently been well developed yet. Therefore, the development of new methods and information technology of joint analysis and interpretation of optical and radar data which are a major issue of the current paper, are certainly relevant. The paper presents an information technology for joint processing of optical and radar satellite imagery, based on training the processing procedure based on the reference values of data from sensors of the one type (optical data), followed by applying to both data types: optical and SAR data.

We introduce pleiotropic association test (PAT) for joint analysis of multiple traits using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. The method utilizes the decomposition of phenotypic covariation into genetic and environmental components to create a likelihood ratio test statistic for each genetic variant. Though PAT does not directly interpret which trait(s) drive the association, a per trait interpretation of the omnibus p-value is provided through an extension to the meta-analysis framework, m-values. In simulations, we show PAT controls the false positive rate, increases statistical power, and is robust to model misspecifications of genetic effect. Additionally, simulations comparing PAT to three multi-trait methods, HIPO, MTAG, and ASSET, show PAT identified 15.3% more omnibus associations over the next best method. When these associations were interpreted on a per trait level using m-values, PAT had 37.5% more true per trait interpretations with a 0.92% false positive assignment rate. When analyzing four traits from the UK Biobank, PAT discovered 22,095 novel variants. Through the m-values interpretation framework, the number of per trait associations for two traits were almost tripled and were nearly doubled for another trait relative to the original single trait GWAS.

BACKGROUND: The dependence of fascicle length on complex interactions with joint angle and force challenges the interpretation of in vivo joint mechanics, muscle mechanical properties, contractile behavior, and muscle function. AIM: The purpose of this study was to determine the complex interaction between muscle activation, joint angle, and fascicle length for isometric contractions of the human vastus lateralis muscle (VL). METHOD: Knee extensor torques, joint angles, EMG activation, and fascicle lengths were determined in nine healthy subjects during maximal and submaximal isometric contractions. RESULTS: Fascicle shortening during isometric contractions depended on muscle-tendon unit length/joint angle and activation, reaching a maximum between angles where VL had its maximum force potential and minimum resistance to fascicle shortening. Maximal fascicle shortening shifted to shorter muscle-tendon unit lengths with decreasing activation. CONCLUSION: Fascicle shortening upon activation depends crucially on the force generating potential and stiffness of the muscle and can reach 30% of the resting fascicle length. Not accounting for the complex interactions between muscle length, force potential, muscle structure, and muscle stiffness has led to erroneous interpretations of the function and properties of healthy and diseased muscles.

Streszczenie:
For almost three decades, Margaret Gilbert has introduced a new account of social facts taking “joint commitments”, not only explicit but also implicit, as the cement of sociality properly understood. Gilbert has used this original account of collective phenomena to clarify a variety of issues, both in the philosophy of rights and in the philosophy of the social sciences. This paper focuses on the latter domain; it argues that although Durkheim and Mauss are central references in her pioneering work, On Social Facts, Gilbert’s model has been underestimated in the fields of sociology and anthropology. This may come from the fact that Gilbert provides the reader with only imaginary examples. To overcome this difficulty, Bouvier investigates several historical examples in two related domains:, the political and the religious. Another reason for this relative lack of interest may come from Gilbert’s very unconventional interpretation of the Durkheimian explanation of social beliefs. Although, on the one hand, her “contractualist” (or Rousseauist) interpretation permits a sharp illumination of certain social facts, it may, on the other hand, impede the recognition of the specificity of other kinds of beliefs, which sociologists and anthropologists—including Durkheim—usually consider as collective beliefs. Bouvier, by contrast, introduces alternative models, illustrating them with similar, although ultimately distinct from previous, historical examples.

The paper explores the referential interpretation of narratives through a case study of computer-mediated narrative discourse, a thread of Hungarian stories on an online discussion site. In particular, we are looking to find out what directs the addressee’s attention and how as she attempts to interpret such stories. Adopting the perspective of social cognitive linguistics, we interpret narrative discourses as joint attentional scenes whose interacting participants contribute to the intersubjective construal of referential scenes (including narrative ones) by directing and following each other’s attention. The main results of the investigation are as follows. 1) In the construal of the physical and social worlds of these stories, a key role is played by the deictic relation based on spatial and temporal contiguity which connects the world of the story to the world of the narrative discourse, interpreted as a joint attentional scene. 2) These narrative discourses frequently objectivize, in the form of metapragmatic reflections, both the situatedness of the referential centre (which lies with the storyteller), and the narrator’s subjective attitude to the narrated events.

SUMMARY Joint inversion for the same or different geophysical parameters is proved to be an effective technique for obtaining high-resolution solutions. Thus, comprehensive geophysical interpretation based on joint inversion has been widely concerned and applied in recent years. To realize joint inversion conveniently and efficiently, we proposed a new inversion strategy based on the alternating direction method of multipliers. In this regard, three optimization algorithms were presented respectively to attain the joint inversion of body wave traveltime and surface wave dispersion data, to obtain the joint inversion of magnetotelluric and seismic data with cross-gradient constraints, and to acquire gravity constrained inversion. A complex model with inconsistent structures in terms of resistivity, velocity and density was designed to evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the multiparameter joint inversion algorithms. In our joint inversion processes, each method was optimized independently and the jointly inverted results were significantly more accurate than those of separate inversions. Finally, we applied the algorithms to the field data involving gravity anomaly data, magnetotelluric data and Rayleigh wave dispersion data. The reliable underground structure was achieved by the joint interpretation of density, resistivity and velocity profiles, which verified the practicality of the inversion strategy in the actual data.

The paper considers an example of applying a joint 2D numerical inversion to the resistivity logs measured at complex sediments intervals of the Imilorskoye field. Complex structure of the sediments makes it difficult to use the traditional interpretation techniques for processing resistivity logs. This leads to the need to find new interpretation approaches, such as joint 2D inversion of resistivity logs obtained by different geophysical methods, which makes it possible to retrieve more reliable estimates of complex sediments electrophysical properties. Due to the lack of measurements taken by modern equipment in old wells, the proposed approach for improving the accuracy of the retrieved electrophysical parameters in this work is a joint 2D inversion of unfocused lateral logging sounding data, focused lateral and low-frequency induction logs.

Interpretation of hydrocarbon-bearing shale is subject to great uncertainty because of pervasive heterogeneity, thin beds, and incomplete and uncertain knowledge of saturation-porosity-resistivity models. We developed a stochastic joint-inversion method specifically developed to address the quantitative petrophysical interpretation of hydrocarbon-bearing shale. The method was based on the rapid and interactive numerical simulation of resistivity and nuclear logs. Instead of property values themselves, the estimation method delivered the a posteriori probability of each property. The Markov-chain Monte Carlo algorithm was used to sample the model space to quantify the a posteriori distribution of formation properties. Additionally, the new interpretation method allows the use of fit-for-purpose statistical correlations between water saturation, salt concentration, porosity, and electrical resistivity to implement uncertain, non-Archie resistivity models derived from core data, including those affected by total organic carbon (TOC). In the case of underdetermined estimation problems, i.e., when the number of measurements was lower than the number of unknowns, the use of a priori information enabled plausible results within prespecified petrophysical and compositional bounds. The developed stochastic interpretation technique was successfully verified with data acquired in the Barnett and Haynesville Shales. Core data (including X-ray diffraction data) were combined into a priori information for interpretation of nuclear and resistivity logs. Results consisted of mineral concentrations, TOC, and porosity together with their uncertainty. Eighty percent of the core data was located within the 95% credible interval of estimated mineral/fluid concentrations.

Efficiently judging where someone else is looking is important for social interactions, allowing us a window into their mental state by establishing joint attention. Previous work has shown that judging the gaze direction of a non-foveally presented face is facilitated when the eyes of that face are directed towards the centre of the scene. This finding has been interpreted as an example of the human bias for misattributing observed ambiguous gaze signals as self-directed eye-contact. To test this interpretation against an alternative hypothesis that the facilitation is instead driven by the establishment of joint attention, we conducted two experiments in which we varied the participants’ fixation location. In both experiments, we replicated the previous finding of facilitated gaze discrimination when the participants fixated centrally. However, this facilitation was abolished when participants fixated peripheral fixation crosses (Experiment 1) and reversed when participants fixated peripheral images of real-world objects (Experiment 2). Based on these data, we propose that the facilitation effect is consistent with the interpretation that gaze discrimination is facilitated when joint attention is established. This finding therefore extends previous work showing that engaging in joint attention facilitates a range of social cognitive processes.
