Streszczenie:
In recent years, Reliance Jio’s offer of 4G services, guaranteeing free voice calls and ‘unlimited’ data streaming, lead to disruption in the Indian telecom market with other cellular operators losing their revenue and customer base. To comprehensively analyze this churn in the Indian telecom industry and its impact on mobile phone customers, the article argues for observing the entanglement of infrastructural and platform-related discourses at three levels of operation: Jio’s strategies to capture the Indian telecom market and the responses by the leading incumbent service provider (Airtel), ordinary citizens’ phone use practices and infrastructural encounters, and the government’s vision for India’s digital future. Connecting pipes to platforms, Jio made infrastructural investments (in spectrum, cell towers, and fiber optics networks) to promote its suite of apps (JioTV, JioChat, and JioMoney). Ordinary citizens relate their access/proximity to telecom infrastructure (cell antennas) to their ability to effectively use apps on their phones. ‘Digital India’ vision purportedly facilitated infrastructural growth to create platforms that would support demonetization and facilitate transparent governance. Through such a three-pronged analysis, I conceptualize ‘infrastructural imaginaries’ that are coproduced by states and citizens, and lie at the intersection of structured state policy/corporate initiatives and lived experiences/affective encounters of ordinary citizens.

Subject area Marketing, Pricing, Strategic marketing. Study level/applicability The case is developed for an MBA-level program. Case overview In May 2017, the telecom industry in India witnessed an intense price war over 4G (fourth generation) data prices. Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti Airtel was exploring various options on how best to respond to the situation. He had to take a final call regarding Bharti Airtel’s marketing team’s counter move to tackle this price war by Jio – should Bharti Airtel ignore it, accommodate it or retaliate with even lower prices? Bharti Airtel strongly believed that Jio pricing structure had violated “fair pricing” norms, and its pricing was anti-competitive. It had filed a case with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to restrain Jio from further giving “free” promotional offers and penalize it for it. Could the legal recourse by Bharti Airtel dampen Jio’s consistent subscriber growth rate? Expected learning outcomes The case provides the students with an insight into how the competition focused on pricing happens in the telecom industry. The pricing war affects the profit margin of all competing companies. It changes the customer reference point for evaluating the competing products and services. The students would also learn practical applications of positive-sum pricing, pricing war, fair pricing and legal aspects of pricing. This case provides the students with an opportunity to understand the pricing war and how to respond to it in a particular situation; understand positive-sum pricing and negative-sum pricing in telecom industry context; understand legal aspects of pricing; and how to leverage data for gaining newer customer insights. Streszczenie:
Along with the global telecom sector, the Indian telecom market has evolved over the past three decades. From the first generation technology in the 1990s, the telecom industry in India offered 4G services in 2012. From microwave technology it has moved into underground fibre optic cables, enhancing the quality and variety of telecom services. Ahead of several emerging markets, subscriber demand in India shifted to data from voice telephony. Subscriber base grew substantially, but average revenue per user (ARPU) has fallen significantly. Intense competition has led to consolidation in the industry. The mobile services faced market disruption from Reliance Jio (R-Jio). The latter launched a strategy of predatory pricing resulting in data wars. R-Jio’s network was based on 4G technology, while other competitors were still offering 2G- and 3G-based services. In comparison to competitors, R-Jio laid more fibre optic cables. Therefore, it could effortlessly upgrade the services offerings to 5G and other future technologies, which competitors could not match so they experienced fall in profits or outright losses. R-Jio also moved into providing fibre-to-the-home technology accompanied with ultra-high-speed internet that could provide a host of entertainment features. As a virtual knee-jerk reaction to the severity of the competitive challenge facing it, Vodafone initiated merger talks with Idea Cellular and soon achieved its culmination. This merger resulted in the largest telecom service company in India. However, Vodafone Idea Ltd.’s balance sheet was over leveraged, rendering it incapable of playing the price cutting game. Besides, it was unclear if it would be able to build the formidable infrastructure required to invest in 5G spectrum, offer superior content as well as smart devices. It soon became obvious that the merger could catapult Vodafone to the pole position in the industry but staying and flourishing there would require it to be more resourceful, imaginative and aggressive. Balesh Sharma, the CEO of Vodafone-Idea Ltd., and his top management team had to respond to the challenges the company was facing and emerge successful.

ABSTRACT: This case introduces the alternatives that companies must consider when deciding how to comply with the SEC’s (U.S. Security and Exchange Commission) 2009 mandate to include financial statements in XBRL format when submitting quarterly and annual reports. Jim’s Sporting Goods, an SEC-accelerated filer, is facing compliance with this mandate in about a year and they are investigating their alternatives. Working with Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement for 2010, students become actively engaged in each of three alternatives. Students first take on the role of an external tagging agent who must map Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement line items to elements in the U.S. GAAP XBRL taxonomy. Students make decisions between competing potential XBRL elements, document their decisions in a spreadsheet, and identify issues to be resolved by Jim’s Sporting Goods’ CFO. Second, students take on the role of an internal accountant who must learn to use an Excel-based software package, Rivet Dragon Tag, to tag Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement line items. Third, students register with and become familiar with an online tagging service to tag Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement line items. Finally, students evaluate the three alternatives, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each, and make a recommendation for how to proceed. The case is based on an actual publicly traded company facing the compliance issues presented.

Ma, Hui-juan. "Exploring the differences between Jin Di’s translation theory and Eugene A. Nida’s translation theory". Babel. Revue internationale de la traduction / International Journal of Translation 53, nr 2 (29.11.2007): 98–111. http://dx.doi.org/10.1075/babel.53.2.02ma.

Streszczenie:
Some translation scholars hold that Jin Di’s theory of equivalent effect and Nida’s theory of dynamic equivalence are essentially same because Jin has basically adopted the definition of Nida’s dynamic equivalence in formulating his own translation theory. However, this paper reveals that there are some fundamental differences between the two theories in three aspects: (1) Nida’s theory is reader-oriented while Jin’s is text-oriented; (2) Nida’s theory is flexible while Jin’s tends to be inflexible; and (3) Jin’s theory is an ideal one in the sense that it cannot be realized in translation practice whereas Nida’s theory is a realistic one. Examples from Jin’s Chinese version of James Joyce’s Ulysses and Bible translations are given to illustrate these differences between Nida’s theory and Jin’s theory. This paper further explores the two major reasons that lead to such discrepancies: (1) the deficiency of Nida’s theory in dealing with transference of aesthetic elements for literary translation; (2) the influence of traditional Chinese translation theories upon Jin’s translation principle. Although Nida’s theory is not restricted to Bible translation, it has some limitations in guiding literary translation because it fails to address the transference of aesthetic elements for literary translation. When Jin translated Joyce’s Ulysses, he had to face the problem of aesthetic transference of literary works. This is the reason why Jin eventually turns to traditional Chinese translation theory and classic literary criticism to seek for support for his translation theory of equivalent effect.

There are few resources amongst contemporary Chinese literary criticism that manage to weave such insightful literary readings and incisive historical research as Kristin Stapleton’s Fact in Fiction: 1920s China and Ba Jin’s Family. The book accomplishes three feats, as set out by Stapleton in her introductory chapter, simultaneously incorporating a history of twentieth-century Chengdu (and its relevance to the developments in China during this period, more broadly) alongside the author’s biography of Ba Jin’s formative years in the city and the historiographical context of his novel Family. Such an undertaking by a less skilled author would have, perhaps, produced a work which simplifies the rich historical underpinnings of Ba Jin’s Family to supplementary readings of the novel, coupled with incidental evidence of the political and social machinations of the city in which its author grew up. Not so under Stapleton’s careful guidance. By reading the social and economic development of early twentieth-century Chengdu as much as its fictional counterpart in Ba Jin’s Turbulent Stream trilogy, Stapleton provides a perceptive reading of Family which invites the reader to consider how fiction can enrich and enliven our understanding of history.

Streszczenie:
Postcolonial re-writings of Joseph Conrad’s works rarely make use of Lord Jim, Ngugi wa Thiongo’s A Grain of Wheat being one of the few exceptions. It is also a rare example of a re-writing in which evident intertextual connections ( in this case to Under Western Eyes and Heart of Darkness, as well as The Tempest) conceal other, more deeply embedded ones (Lord Jim). Ngugi’s version of Lord Jim has at its center John Thompson, the British antagonist of all the Gikuyu characters in the novel, and a parodic embodiment of Lord Jim’s dreams of power and glory. The most salient difference between Thompson and Jim lies in the way in which they perceive their own status within the British colonial enterprise. The Oxonian Thompson is fully conscious of the ideological implications of his occupation, while uneducated Jim can barely see the surface of his. Thompson’s state-sanctioned escape from Kenya on the day of its regaining independence, read as a parody of Jim’s escape from the Patna, opens the fi eld for an incisive ideological critique of the colonial contexts of Jim’s tragedy. Ralph Ellison’s rewriting of Lord Jim is limited to the Trueblood episode of Invisible Man and focuses on the main character’s breaking of the incest taboo, which may be compared to Jim’s abandoning ship. Trueblood’s attempt to „move without moving” echoes Jim’s account of his purportedly unconscious jump from the Patna. While Jim, as well as Marlow, present these events and those that occur later, in Patusan, as versions of the Greek tragic paradigm of human transgression and divine retribution, Ellison brings Trueblood’s transgression down to a more quotidian level, substituting a family tragedy in which the gods do not intervene for the pathos with which Conrad endows Jim. Norton in this version of Conrad’s novel serves a similar purpose – he is the parodic, downsized equivalent of Brierly, the captain who commits suicide after realizing that if he had found himself in Jim’s position on the Patna he would have done the same thing. Compared with the reality of a black sharecropper’s life in Alabama, Jim’s obsession with valor and honor, as well as his lust for adventure, are simply infantile, and the imperialist underpinnings of his transgression make it a parody of taboo-breaking. Ellison’s „signifying” on Lord Jim, as far as I know, has not been hitherto noticed by critics.

Ba Jin’s translated works have a relatively important place in the history of Chinese translation. However, Ba Jin’s translations of She and The Story of Suvarin have remained unnoticed by the scholarly community for a long time. A comparison of the 1929 edition of She and the 1939 edition of The Story of Suvarin reveals slight differences between the two versions. Chen Yuan’s pioneering approach to the study of historical sources is a valuable resource for dealing with literary historical materials. The study of historical sources, also known as “Heuistik”, originally means “finden” and “Fofindungskunst”. The main purpose is to find out “what is historical material”, “what are the sources of historical material”, and “there are several types of historical sources”. This study employs a historical source research approach to examine two of Ba Jin’s translation works in the 1920s and the 1930s. Rereading these two translations helps clarify the pseudonym Mara, trace the historical origins of the changes in different versions, and discover the meaning of Anna’s name.

This paper examines how Ha Jin’s Waiting challenges the Maoist communist regime by depicting the protagonist, Lin, as struggling to fight for his rights to live freely. The Maoist regime successfully establishes “normalizing power” in a society to lead the protagonist to believe that the goal of his life is mainly for working hard for the military institution and the regime, instead of establishing his freedom. As a result, Lin loses his senses of humans, such as love and empathy, and lives with selfishness and ignorance as to the way the Maoist discourse teaches him through Mao’s red book. By engaging with cultural studies, this paper investigates how Jin’s Waiting challenges Maoist ideology by both celebrating and critiquing the idea of capitalism, which likely perpetuates communism. Thus, this paper discovers how Ha Jin’s novel challenges communist ideologies and totalitarian rules by illuminating social disorder and loses of sense of humanity. Indeed, individuals live under oppression and they are like a prisoner who is suffering from being judged and punished by totalitarian regimes and dominant society. Hence, the significance of this research is to help to reduce any forms of oppression experienced by many ethnic-Americans who have suffered from the totalitarian rulers that have ruled society, especially in the era of communism, colonialism, and global capital transnationalism.

Ki Jeong-jin is the one of the most famous Neo-Confucian theorists of the late Joseon Dynasty, and he is well known as a proposer of the theory of statements that there is only one Principle although the phenomena vary. He particularly emphasizes the role and authority of Principle. His arguments related to the theory were mainly raised in the work of Napryangsaeui. He, in this work, explicitly reveals the intention to resolve the issues of the nature of humans and things in the Ho-hak debate. But he has never directly participated in the debate. Instead, after his death, some debates over Napryangsaeui arose between his students and Jeon Woo. This paper aims to analyze Ki Jeong-jin’s theory by comparison with the view of Han Wonjin who represents the theory of nature of humans and things in the Ho-hak school, and with the issues of debate between Ki Jeong-jin’s students and Jeon Woo. Particularly, we focused on the matter of relation between ‘completeness and incompleteness’ and ‘original nature’. Through this analysis, we could expand the understanding of the aspects discussed in the theory on the similarities and differences in nature of humans and things, and the significance of Ki Jeong-jin’s theory. Furthermore, in the history of Neo-Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty, we could shed light on the reconstruction process of the philosophical statements that there is only one Principle but the phenomena vary.

Jio's affordable data plans and extensive network coverage played a vi-tal role in bridging the digital divide in India. Examining the impact of Jio on internet usage helps evaluate the extent to which previously underserved populations gained access to digital resources and the resulting socio-economic implications. The study of Jio's impact on internet usage provides in-sights into changes in user behavior, including internet penetration rates, usage frequency, and types of online activities. Understanding these shifts helps businesses and policymakers adapt their strate-gies to cater to evolving consumer preferences. Streszczenie:
Women’s issues are a significant subject of study in the realm of Chinese literature. In many works, it can be seen to oppose stereotypes or norms imposed on the female gender and to take measures leading to the emancipation of the individual. Such literature is symptomatic of a desire for change in society, that is, the overthrow of the patriarchal system and the introduction of equal rights between the sexes. An example of such prose is the works of China’s first feminist, Qiu Jin, who decided to fight for women’s rights. She was sentenced to death for her revolutionary activities. However, her texts introduced a completely new image of women into the public sphere - different from the one that had been reproduced for hundreds of years in ancient China. The poet chose to endow her heroines with charisma, courage, intelligence and the will to fight for a better life. Her aim was to make women aware of their situation in life, their social role, and to encourage them to leave the male-dominated world. Michalina Koniuk, in the chapter “Feminist Deconstruction of the Traditional Image of Woman in Qiu Jin’s Works”, proposes to analyse Qiu Jin’s works and present that the characters created by the writer oppose and destroy the image of the obedient and uneducated woman that existed in ancient China. First, the social role imposed on women in Chinese society has been described, namely that of obedient daughter, wife and daughter-in-law. The requirements and rules expected of Chinese women have been presented, and how Confucian norms contributed to the belittling of women’s role and position in Chinese society. As the poet was inspired by her own life experiences, Qiu Jin’s life were briefly introduced. Her childhood, during which the first signs of dissatisfaction with the obligations and social norms imposed on girls could be observed. An unsuccessful marriage mobilised the feminist to fight for women’s rights, to oppose the doctrines of Confucius and to leave home and go abroad. This was a great act of courage and at the same time a struggle for freedom and independence in the life of a feminist. That part was followed by an analysis of Qiu Jin’s works, whose female characters exemplify the kind of norms and behaviours that Qiu Jin rebelled against. At the same time, these characters deconstruct the traditional image of a woman and introduce a new one of a strong and independent individual. In this chapter, all poems and quotations have been translated by the author from Chinese into Polish.

Abstract Jim Vincent was truly a modern-day Renaissance man. An accomplished jazz and classical pianist and composer, who performed with some of Europe's top improvisers, making appearances at major jazz festivals and in BBC broadcast concerts. However, his legacy lies elsewhere. He graduated in physics at the University of Durham with first-class honours in 1962, proceeding to a PhD in 1966. After jobs in academia and industry, in 1979 he became Head of Physics at the Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) in Edinburgh. He took over a research team that had been working on sampling of dusts for studies of the risks of lung disease in coal miners and other workers. Jim’s team defined the sampling criteria for the aerosol that can be inhaled into the nose or mouth, in collaboration with other European scientists and, in 1986, published the description and experimental characterisation of the IOM Inhalable Dust sampler. This sampler has been recommended for measuring dust exposure in workplaces around the world. Its design, which the IOM patented, has remained essentially unchanged for almost 40 years. Jim’s academic and professional achievements spanned an enormous breadth, but his legacy is his contribution to the way we sample hazardous aerosols.

The literature of Maharishi ji Vedic Science is vast, and the theme of peace runs consistently through it from its beginnings, as has been demonstrated elsewhere in this Issue. There is therefore no intention here of presenting all of its richness, variety, and depth. Fortunately, not only is the teaching of Maharishi ji Vedic Science perfectly consistent across five decades but it seems at every point to contain the main elements of the theme, albeit with different emphases and at different levels of detail. Streszczenie:
Abstract The present article discusses the possibility of regarding the Japan Islamic Congress (JIC), a religious organization that claimed a membership of over 50,000 in the 1980s, as a new religion. It examines major factors in the expansion of the JIC through highlighting five characteristics it shares with new religions, namely, 1) it had a charismatic leader, attributed with the power to ‘heal’; 2) it attracted members through the curing of illnesses, with many joining as nominal members; 3) it focused on making practice easy and organizing large-scale events where the group’s identity is emphasized; 4) its teachings display a syncretic nature, combining Islamic and Buddhist ideas; and 5) it was actively engaged with society, especially the fields of medicine and politics. Critiquing the view taken by existing scholarship that attributes the JIC’s decline to its teachings not representing “genuine Islam,” the article further argues that, in addition to the lack of a capable successor, three other factors can be highlighted as possible reasons for the JIC’s inability to survive: 1) its primary channel of contact with potential members was limited to medical service; 2) apart from this medical service, it did not develop teachings or practices that would lead directly to the improvement of life; and 3) it did not meet the needs of contemporary Japanese society, where the interest in more personal spirituality had started to grow.

AbstractIn this response paper, I trace the origins of semiosic translation and explain why Jia’s interpretations are theoretically problematic. I also demonstrate that the view of translation endorsed by Jia is untenable from a cognitive perspective, since both perception and action are affordances of the living organisms and hence are not restricted to the “thinking mind” within a Lotmanian semiosphere. Finally, since translation is not a special case of semiosis, I show that semiosic processes, and not individual signs, are the source of all types of translations.

Through hermeneutical and bibliographical study of several publications and works of JIL, the article concludes that JIL’s interpretations of these issues are very contextual. This can be seen from their use of the historical and rational approach to the Qur’an and its interpratation, as well as from the tendency of subjective and ideological agenda in their support of gender equality, human rights and liberalism.
